3 out of 5 stars alright.......2006-11-16

THIS WAS ALRIGHT. THE GRAMMER WASN'T SO GOOD, SO IT KIND OF MADE THE BOOK NOT WORTH READING. I'M WONDERING IF THIS WAS THE SUTHOR'S FIRST BOOK. MODESTY IS YOUR TYPICAL YOUNG GIRL, WANTING NOTHING OUT OF LIFE, BUT THE THUGGEST DUDE WITH THE MOST MONEY. SHE GETS A FEW, AS WELL AS HATERS AND INTO A COUPLE OF FIGHTS, ALL BECAUSE SHE IS WITH SOMEONE ELSE'S MAN, BUT SHE DOESN'T STARTS THE FIGHTS.

EVENTUALLY SHE GRADUATES FROM HIGH SCHOOL, APPLY'S TO COLLEGE AND FROM THEN ON SHE GOES THTROUGH MORE DRAMA, MORE FIGHTS AND BETRYAL OF FRIENDSHIPS, ALL THIS WHILE STOMPING IN HER STILETTO'S.

I WOULDN'T BUY THIS BOOK, JUST BORROW IT.

Stiletto 101 by Meyeil
This is the hottest, most entertaining and educational book on the market right now. It is erotic also, it has erotism in it. Of course b.g. it is purely 'fictional' of course, couldn't have all dat excitement in 'real life' No real names called of course.
This story is sold and told. 100% summer, winter, fall, and srping reading, a must read for everyone, from jumior high to high school to college/university, and graduate school, and d various schools of life, street life included.
Wait 'till later on in d year, when d other 2 arrives.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - A Survivor .......2006-06-02

Affectionately known as Motley, Modesty Blair was raised by her father and paternal grandmother after her mother relocated to Milwaukee from Chicago, leaving her behind. She was raised in the hood and has had her share of fights. Women envy her and men want her, but Modesty has an agenda all her own. She dreams of making something of herself despite where she comes from. She dresses in designer clothes, always has her hair and nails done, and wears a nice pair of stilettos. She describes herself as addicted to retail and to feed her addiction she shoplifts or boosts as she calls it, and is never without the best of everything.

During her teen years in an effort to start life anew, she relocates to Milwaukee where her mother lives but isn't there long before she is back in the same situations: stealing and fighting. In spite of her looks she has a hard time finding a love interest that wants to get to know her for who she is. She is involved in an on again off again romance with a guy who continuously treats her bad. In addition to being mistreated in a relationship she is also backstabbed and talked about amongst those she calls "friends". Modesty is fed up and is determined to get her life together.

She decides to apply to college and to her surprise is accepted. Although in college, old habits die hard and she is still doing a bit of hustling. She still hasn't quite got her life on track. Modesty begins hanging with a crowd totally different from the usual people she hangs with. These are girls who have goals and dreams, they know what they want out of life and they go after it. They don't partake in any stealing or any of the things Modesty is accustomed to. Can these friends be the determining factor in Modesty getting her life on track? Or will the streets call her name so strongly that she has to answer?

STILETTO 101 is a fast-paced, coming of age story that grabs the reader from the first page. The characters were well-developed and the writing has a nice flow. What I enjoyed most was I felt like I knew Modesty and when she would repeatedly make the same mistakes, I got mad and wanted tell her to straighten up and fly right. I also enjoyed the fact that the storyline was a real one. So often people become a victim of circumstance but have no desire to turn things around. Modesty was a woman on the move, who sought change and put forth the effort no matter how difficult it was.

Stilleto 101 was a very interesting book! I finished it in a day and a half, a definite page turner. All though at certain points I couldnt really relate to Modesty, I felt she had a great story to tell. I felt like someone was sitting in front of me and telling me the story of there lives! The story captivates you, keeps you tied to each page full of drama after drama. I can say this book is a must read!

4 out of 5 stars Dangerous Ride.......2006-08-09

This was a good book. It didn't waist any time getting to the good parts, the author just jumped right in. I enjoyed reading it and will read it again in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Limited plot but some nice erotic moments........2005-11-15

I give this 3 stars as its better than average for the genre. The plot is pretty light, Maita is a serious control freak and bare back rider in the rodeo. She meets Kade, a rodeo livestock contractor with a side of training women as subs. The owner of the ranch that Maita works on starts pressuring her when Kade shows interest and she quits. Both Kade (his mother was a prostitute and a prospers one) and Maita (she was set up by an "uncle" as a kiddy port star) are somewhat gratuitous to the plot which is pretty thin. Good erotic scenes though.

Soon Ashleigh and Stardust are jumping and showing all the time, and winning, too! But no matter how good she gets, Ashleigh still wants to be a jockey. Doesn't she?

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars So Fake!!.......2003-07-05

I tottaly agree with a reader from usa. In this book, Ashleigh made out that jumping is soooo easy. Is that ever WRONG!!! Jumping is really hard and takes a lot of work. No one can "just do it" like the authour made out in this book. It took me months to perfect a two foot jump, and Ashleigh can do it in a few minutes? I don't think so. It's not like running a horse fast is any harder, that's for sure!!

5 out of 5 stars Will Ashleigh forget about being a jockey?.......2003-05-21

When Ashleigh Griffen's best friend Mona tells her how much fun show jumping is, she gives it a try. She and her mare Stardusts win a few ribbons, but Ashleigh is starting to forget her dream about being a jockey. It was cool that she rode like a jockey to catch Frisky, but will the chase make her realize that she still has her dream?

4 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC! THOROUGHBRED RULES!.......2003-03-20

This was so exciting and awesome. I felt like I was jumping with Ashleigh. There is a lot of info about showjumpers and eventing! It is very fast-paced and realistic. It is great for anyone who does or admires showjumping, like me! A warning, though--if you pick it up and start reading, your eyes will be glued to the page! The only thing I didn't like was the way Ashleigh's parents acted when Ashleigh said she wanted to jump, but overall it is such an exciting book.
COVER ANALYISIS: A pretty good rendition of Asleigh but not a very good version of Starlight. Starlight looks like a liver chestnut on this cover. Oh, well--I can't complain. I guess some people don't care about detailing drawings of horses as much as I do :)

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and always Horse Based.......2000-12-28

I just love this book ! I can't say it was my favourite but it came close. The Ashleigh series is so realistic.I liked having Rhoda come to stay she seemed nice and friendly. Ashleigh and her were bothed faced with normal every day fears. I think the reasons I like this series so much is because 1. I love both horses and racing, 2. Ashleigh and her family deal with regular issues and 3.I can relate to the characters the author makes it feel like you right there with the characters! This series is great I wish it could last ! Keep up the good Work!

5 out of 5 stars Ashleigh is a Great rider ! I really liked this book !.......2000-09-26

I thought that this book was really great! Ashleigh was a great character and I liked Stardust. I have read alot of the THOROUGHBRED Books and I have to say that I would like to see more about Ashleigh ,not just Christina. It was a great book and I would recomend it to anyone.

        Book Description

Talia Norin, an equine veterinarian working in the vast foothill plains of Colorado, is still reeling from the untimely death of her fiance. Her veterinary practise is thriving even if her broken heart is not... and she certainly wasn't looking for love the day a mysterious stranger dropped literally into her life!
This man, grievously wounded and wearing the evidence of torture on his ravaged body, has no choice but to trust Tally with his safety... and his life! Using all her medical expertise, Tally is able to heal his wounds, but when he wakes up with absolutely no recollection of who he is or what happened to him, Tally has serious doubts as to whether or not she can heal his soul. That, she feels, is up to Jesse Rodriguez, the hired man she employs to manage her ranch, Wild Horse Mesa.
Jesse Rodriguez is a man with a gift. Claiming to see into animal minds, Jesse finds himself somewhat of an enigma, embraced by some, completely shunned by the scientific community... and even Tally has a hard time believing in the meta-physical world Jesse appears connected with. Still, when the handsome stranger Tally has named Mack begins to remember hints of a violent, dangerous past, she is forced to abandon conventional science and put her trust in Jesse's gift.
With Jesse Rodriguez's help, Mack remembers more and more... and what he remembers casts serious doubt on his innocence. Tally begins to question her own emotions, believing Mack to be the victim of a violent assault... and when new information begins to surface out of Mack's fractured mind, things may not be what they seem at all. Was she falling in love with a man... or a murderer?
And as if things weren't bad enough, someone is going around the countryside, shooting horses for kicks....
A Dangerous Ride, is a fast-paced gallop into the oft-times spiritual world of horses; where violence and intrigue intrude on a peaceful Colorado mesa. Where one woman's quest to do the right thing could very well end in tragedy!

The tenth anniversary edition of Julie Czerneda's debut science fiction novel, the story of a woman on the run, from the law, her own people, and an unknown pursuer. Her memory taken from her by a stasis block, Sira must stay free long enough to regain her identity and the full use of her telepathic powers-for failure may cost not only her own future but that of her entire race.

Book I of The Trade Pact Universe Author's Note: This was my first novel, both in terms of the first piece of fiction I ever finished and the first I sold. It started as just one of many stories I was playing with as a hobby, never thinking to see copies in the hands of readers, certainly never planning to send it out to a publisher. I'm very happy I did, but I do confess my first thought after the fateful phone call was "Oh no! What have I done!?" because by then, I knew I could do better. I harboured dark suspicions readers would take one look and say "She thinks she can write?" Fortunately, my editor had the confidence I lacked and readers kindly took a chance on an unknown. I'm proud to be able to say this book has been a bestseller, was recommended by Locus, made Editor's Choice for the Science Fiction Book Club, spawned a series, started my partnership with the talented Luis Royo, and has been reprinted several times. It was also responsible for my nomination for the John Campbell Award for Best New Writer of 1999. I expected none of this -- and I still pinch myself every time I look at it. Who knew? But I'll always have a special place in my heart for the first story of Sira and Morgan.

              Customer Reviews:

              3 out of 5 stars It Took A While.......2007-10-08

It took some ten times trying to get past the first 200 pages or so before the I hit my stride in reading Czerneda's debut novel. The only reason I stuck with the book was because I didn't have another novel in the wing waiting for me. It was difficult figuring out what the hell was going on those first 200 pages and why I should care.

I prefer fantasy over sci fi which probably explains why I kept putting STRANGER down at the beginning. Too much technical gibberish got in the way of the story line unfolding there at the beginning. Too many species. Too much sci fi stuff got in the way of my connecting with the characters. Too much telepathic stuff. Too many people with stealth motives for me to follow and keep up with.

Sira was just another amnesiac overly attached to her rescuer, Morgan, there at the beginning. It wasn't until Barac paired up with Rael in search of Sira that things got interesting for me. It was then that Sira's powers started peeping out, and she ceased being a victim. I started to care about what happened to her and started wondering what all the fuss was about. The novel's pacing got better and things became interesting.

Yitzor's death could have been the end of the novel. But Czerneda really showed her skills when she managed to make what happened next, the novel's final resolution where Sira confronts with her true self and how she came to be "lost" in the first place, an interesting and complex tale in itself.

4 out of 5 stars Great beginning to a series.......2007-02-18

I love this whole series, but the first book is my favorite. I've reread it multiple times. Czerneda creates a fantastic world that, at least to me, seemed very realistic as to what the future could possibly be. The emotions and struggles of the characters are also very real and pulled me into the story. I thought the concepts she created were original and inventive.

Sira di Sarc is from a race of telepaths and telekinetics who appear human but are not. The Clan of the Mir'hay, or clan as they call themselves for short are highly xenophobic and think all races besides themselves are inferior; especiallly humans who ape them in appearance but lack their advanced telepathy (although there are exceptions as we find out later). The clan are dying out because they selectively breed amongst themselves and this is limiting their gene pool and causing a whole host of problems. Determined to find a way to solve this problem Sira undertakes an experiment. She erases her memory (implanting suggestions to seek out the human telepath known as Jason Morgan) in order to see if cross-breeding with humans is possible. But with her memories erased Sira develops a new personality that is similar yet different from her previous self. She falls in love with Morgan and vice versa. Their feelings are recognized when Sira is kidnapped by a fellow Clan intent on making her his wife because she is the most powerful clan to have ever been born. Morgan and her relatives rescue her. Then they decide to return her memories but Sira is frightened because she doesn't want to lose her new self. The two identities merge, though Sira struggles with accepting both of her selves, though she still loves Morgan. At the end of the story they begin a new life together although several loose ends are left that will be tied up in the next novels. Overall this is a great story set in a fascinating world that I highly recommend to anyone.

              2 out of 5 stars For a book that's 9 years old.......2006-04-03

I'll keep in mind that this book is 9 years old. There probably weren't that many Mary Sues running around and characters torn straight out of anime back then.

It is interesting the first chapter (not the prologue) opens with the first person narration of an amnesiac heroine (cliché convention). But I'm disappointed that Czerneda switches back and forth between first and third person narration. Instead of giving the reader different perspectives, I personally think it says "the author can't handle the story from a limited perspective" to me. Maybe I'm more traditional in that sense, but I don't like it how some writers "want everything" in their narrative, want both the intimate first person account and the all-knowing power of the omnipotent narrator. In this case, it does deliver the scenario and the crisis to the reader quickly, but I think it breaks up the lyrical quality of the work. I'd rather it be narrated entirely in third person, then the transitions would be less awkward.

That aside, there are many clichés in the book, instances that says déjà vu, a certain character that scream Mary Sue. But that our heroine Sira (who has a broken nail, literally) offers herself to Morgan like five pages after they meet and she gets on his ship? Cheap romance cliché!! He's very gentlemanly (though he mind-rapes her later and she's totally ok about that), of course, to refuse her; and then he gets poisoned and faints during their narrow escape from thugs and she needs to drag him back on the ship and angst over losing him...ugh!! Not to mention, he's human and she's not, and her race is Montague v. Capulet about interracial relationships. No matter how connected Sira and Morgan feel, they just can't be together without her being banished or something.

And then of course, they are both telepaths with power way off the chart and hold the key to defeating a certain bad guy who is in some mysterious and forgotten ways (that's when amnesia comes in) connected to Sira's past.

Plot-wise, this book is really not that strong, and Sira is Mary Sue on too many levels!! It's difficult to connect to a heroine who is amnesiac, disconnected (you can't tell when she makes up her mind about some things cuz it's embedded into her subconscious--just accept that!), powerful, and never makes an embarrassing mistake (which is too essential to portraying a true-to-life character!!). But the first person writing, especially at the beginning when Sira is negotiating with herself about who she is and what she must do, is well-written. Not outstanding, but decently good. There are aesthetic moments too. The title, for instance, really stuck with me when a certain character says it in the story.

Don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, but what keeps me reading, though, is that I was sure I'll be right about the ending--and really, there wasn't much to throw me off.

5 out of 5 stars Great Science Fiction.......2005-09-11

I had not read anything by this author until I picked up a copy of Beholders Eye, from the Web Shifters series. I was hooked from that point on. A Thousand Words for Stranger is a great lead in novel for the Trade Pact Universe series. I have read all three books in the series and would love to see more novels set in the same space/timeframe.

5 out of 5 stars Suspence, Romance, and Telepaths (My Favourite Combination).......2005-07-06

This was a very good book, especially if you like the above. The author really creates that feel of amnesia giving you no introduction to anything other than as the main character is figuring it out, and there is no way you can possibly put everything together until the end. I found I was driven to continue by curiosity and my analytical trying to figure out how everything fit together. From a suspence angle, it kept your mind busy and you were ever guessing what might happen next. If you want a light read, this isn't it, but if your like me and enjoy something that makes you think this is good.

There is nothing I love more than telepaths, and the psi-interactions in this book were excellent. It captured the feel of mind speech in such a way that it seemed entirely natural and not a sci-fi creation. It also did well to define it's particular telepathy in a way that didn't overpower the story and the society it developed was most intriguing.

Nothing in this book about the society and such was ever explained in great detail, but this worked extremely well to identify you with the main character who also really didn't understand everything because they couldn't remember their past. It gave you just enough information to give you a basic idea of the structure, and keep you seeking connections, but not enough that anything was predictible or that the character interactions were simple.

The Romance in this book was simple and subtle. Not the overpowers flights of lusts of passion you see in most "romance" books today but more of a sincere and careful relationship that built up throughout the story. In someways a sideline to the plot and in other ways not, but overall very tasteful and well done and very pure. It wasn't physical romance as much as it telepathic romance (mind speech, shared emotions, pair bonds, etc . . . the best kind) which was well portrayed.

Overall this is a great book for any who likes telepaths, mystery, a bit of suspence, and a twinge of romance, all in a distant and uniquely structured world. I can't wait to read the following books.

                  5 out of 5 stars Authoritative!.......2005-03-02

NICE. It's an intimidatingly weighty textbook, unillustrated. When it says "from around the world," it really does mean from around the world. Everything is sorted according to area and culture of origin. The myths are presented more or less as they originally were, not paraphrased or censored, although they usually have a limited amount of commentary preceding each story, explaining a few words and what you need to know about that culture to understand the story. There are the usual creation myths you've probably already encountered, such as the Enuma Elish and some Judeo-Christian things. There are also lots and lots of legends (and even some peoples) who you may not have heard of before, or at least, you heard some parts and not others.

There were a couple stories that took my interest. One of them was an Eskimo genesis about how Raven created the world, discovered humans, and started teaching the first people how to live... I'd heard a few variants, but this one has Raven introducing various animals to the first men, and explaining how to hunt them. Most of the animals are deer, but there are a few fantastic creatures in there, presented with just the same solemnity and depth of detail. One of these was a six-legged, horned animal that I had to make a drawing of; I've never heard of them before, its name was not mentioned, and I've never seen any pictures of them, traditional or otherwise.

Another story that caught my eye was the Hopi genesis, which I've heard of before, with the successive worlds being created, destroyed by a different catastrophes each time, and survived by a select few who later migrated to the next world. What interested me was the elaborate description of "vibratory centers" aligned down the spine, and how the ancient people used them to heal... I mean, they're identical in location, description, and function to the chakras described in India, although the Hopi system doesn't mention the lower two chakras.

5 out of 5 stars Deja vu all over again.......2003-01-31

Forget Joseph Campbell. This is the ultimate myth book, hundreds of creation myths from all over the globe. Sproul shows that our socalled modern ideas--from the big bang to the steady state universe--repeat myths formed thousands of years ago, from the inhabitants of Mesopotamia to the South Sea islanders. Who needs a big bang when you have a "great cosmic copulation?"

4 out of 5 stars How the World was Created -- According to the World.......2001-03-22

This is an incredibly thorough book that lists, in short story form, the creation myths from all over the world. It is incredibly thorough, covering even Inuit and Siberian legends. A great way to learn about the world's peoples by learning their folk tales of how the world was created. And what a great price for such an invaluable Cultural Anthropology book!
