Book Description
“Coomer writes so well, with such freshness and authenticity, that we hate to put the book down.” —The Boston Globe
The first thing Hannah said to the dog: “I don’t know if there’s enough room for you on this island. I’m already here.”
Inhabiting an island off the coast of Maine left to her by her great-uncle Arno, Hannah finds her life as a dedicated and solitary artist rudely interrupted one summer when a dog, matted with feathers and seaweed, arrives with the tide. The dog quickly endears himself and easily adapts to Hannah’s habits, but he is only the first in a series of unexpected visitors. He is soon followed by a teenager running from an abusive father, a half sister in trouble, a mainland family in need, and a trapped whale. Now in the midst of a community that depends on her for support and love, Hannah faces new emotional challenges as family secrets are uncovered, each one more alarming than the next.
In his latest novel, Joe Coomer offers the rugged yet stunning beauty of Maine and the lobstermen and their families who are tethered to the sea for survival. Pocketful of Names is a deeply human tale about the unpredictability of nature, art, family, and whatever else washes up on the shore.

My first Coomer read..........2007-07-30
Pocketful of Names is a great story! It does a great job of describing life on Deer Isle, ME, with respect for those who live there as well as insightful humor I doubt any in the area would find offensive.
Thank you, Joe! Waiting for your next story...
Wonderful complex story.......2007-07-26
Joe Coomer tells a great tale and I loved this book. One of those that you hate to have end. It might be a bit more of a woman's book but the characters are complex and there are many twists and turns. I recommend it highly.
Pocket Full of Names.......2006-08-28
I've read nearly all Coomer's books, and this one lived up to my expectations. I particularly enjoy the characters and their rough edges. In this one it was the elderly man with a memory problem, which we related to alzheimers. Coomer makes you laugh in a John Irving type way. Another winner. Definitely a quiet tone, but page turner. Loved it.
Great and authentic local color.......2006-08-07
I was skeptical of this book because it purported to be about the coast of Maine and was written by a guy not from here. (I'm not from here either, however.) But he pretty much nails the local character--or at least an authentic piece of it--and gets the feeling of the place perfectly.
While the plot seemed a bit strained at times, I found it very involving with characters--especially the main character--that really came alive for me.
And it's a novel with some real depth of ideas, not just a local color story.
Full disclosure--a picture I took is on the back dustjacket--that's why I got a copy. When I heard my local bookseller had it on his favorite booklist, I decided I better read it and was stunned at how good it was.
You won't be disappointed in this book.
Pocketful of Names.......2006-07-12
This is one of the best books ever! I have read all of the authors' (who deserves much more recognition than he has so far received) books and this latest is his top read so far. A gifted word master and storyteller, the author spins a tale that you absolutely want to believe is true. Set on a harsh island in the northeast Atlantic, the novels characters become people you know and root for. It is a tale of the human spirit(and of the dog spirit). Dog lovers-this is a must read! You will fall on the floor howling with laughter, you will pump your fist at the ceiling and shout "yes", and you will weep tears of happiness. I am eagerly waiting his next novel.

In an 18th century of wit, womanizing and powdered wigs, provincial Philip Jettan runs the risk of irreproachability.

Early Heyer (1st romance?) like a Sheridan play.......2007-09-08
When I initially read this book many years ago...I think I did not care for it because I don't remember rereading and it is much briefer and less polished than her later Regency romances.
Recently, I reread this novel for the 1st time. Despite being a short novel, it start out very slow and the plot does not move along until about one quarter of the way though the novel. In the beginning Philip is happy to be just a country farmer, running his father's estate Tom's Pride. He has been born a gentleman but he does not have the manners of a gentleman. He has always been in love with Cleone Charteris, a neighbor's daughter but he does not woo her. He really takes his relationship with her for granted. Cleone is beautiful but childish and shallow, perhaps because this is a very early effort by Ms. Heyer who has not yet learned to create more complex and interesting heroines.
After a humiliating short sword fight over Cleone with Henry Bancroft, another neighbor's foppish and disagreeable son (Henry is rusticating from London), rejection from Cleone, and pressure from his father Sir Maurice, Philip is determined to become the height of the fashionable 18th century gentleman to prove to Cleone and his father that he was more worthy as a country gentleman than as a shallow painted puppy. Philip disappears with his uncle to Paris to be trained by the uncle's aristocratic French friends. Philip is a very fast learner and rapidly becomes the delight of Paris for his exquisite taste in clothing and his sweet, humorous, refreshingly energetic personality. The ladies and gentlemen of Paris are enchanted with le petit Philippe; no party is dull when Philippe attends. Though other reviewers seem to prefer the pre-Paris Philip, I most definitely prefer the light-hearted Paris transformed Philip over the too serious country gentleman farmer. As Philip's uncle in London tells Sir Maurice (before Sir Maurice has met his transformed son), the new Philip is pure joy. Underneath his powder and patch, the old Philip is still there, but now he has acquired creative ways to express himself and no longer takes himself too seriously. Philip really is much more fun. I think a sense of humor is a very attractive trait in a man and Philip's sense humor is definitely improved by his stay in Paris.
This novel reads more like a comedic play by Sheridan than a later Heyer Regency romance (which resemble Jane Austen novels).
One of my favorites of Heyer.......2006-04-07
In reading the reviews of this book, I found I felt a little different than some. I've read a number of Heyer's books and there are very few I can't put down. But this was not one of them. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters. It's not quite as good as my favorite, Devil's Cub, but I'd give it a solid 4 1/2 stars and recommend it to anyone that likes Heyer's.
One of the few disappointing Heyer romances.......2006-01-21
I am a really big fan of Georgette Heyer's work, but this book was a disappointment. Originally entitled "The Transformation of Phillip Jettan" the story is about a young man who is in love with his neighbour Cleone Charteris but she wants someone a little more exciting. When a newcomer arrives in their locality and shows Cleone all the areas in which Phillip is wanting she rejects Phillip.
And then the book became disappointing. Phillip went to France to learn to be a painted dandy - and thus to become the opposite of what he was before. There are various interesting events like him fighting a duel and then his reacquaintance with Cleone but overall this didn't work for me. The misunderstandings between the young couple were irritating.
Probably part of the reason I didn't like this book is that Phillip turned himself from a traditional Heyer hero into a painted fop, the traditional Heyer butt of jokes. I found myself disliking Phillip and finding Cleone stupid, shallow and annoying.
The book receives 3 stars from me as it's written with the usual Heyer excellence but there are a score of better books by this author.
It's ok.......2004-09-12
Dissatisfied with Philip's easygoing, country manners, Cleone Charteris rejects Philip Jettan's marriage proposal, in the hopes that he'll acquire town polish and social graces. Of course, Philip immediately leaves town for just such a purpose. He returns duly, painted, powdered, with all the affected mannerisms of a fop in order to teach Cleone a lesson; does she in fact want a painted puppet or the genuine Philip?
"Powder and Patch" was one of Georgette Heyer's earlier works and, in my opinion, doesn't possess the same degree of charm, wit and fluidity of her later works (It was written when she was 21). I admired the honesty and intelligence of the hero, Philip Jettan, who consistently remained true to himself and to his love. Cleone Charteris, Philip's love interest, however, was a bit irritating. Although it's clear that she loves Philip at the start of the book, she's unhappy that he's "a country bumpkin." When he returns to her a refined gentleman, she's even more dissatisfied. Cleone was just too finicky and scatterbrained a heroine for my tastes. She had absolutely no idea what she wanted through 99% of the book. As a reader, it was too frustrating trying to understand or tolerate her. In addition, the advice from Cleone's aunt to Philip that he should treat her with a firm hand and "master her" was a bit grating, but perhaps that's just because I'm reading it too much from a 21st century perspective. That phrase just didn't sit too well with me; I think that that took away from my enjoyment of the book, especially since it was repeated several times in "Powder and Patch." In addition, as the title implies, this is a Georgian era book, not a Regency. (Men of fashion wore face powder and face patches during the French-styled Georgian period) I personally prefer Regencies to Georgian novels. Furthermore, there's a fair sprinkling of French in this book, a language that I unfortunately never studied. I know Spanish and Italian, so I had a basic understanding of the dialogue but I felt that I missed out on some subtle nuance or some cleverly inserted Heyer wit. Overall, I think the book is fair but definitely not one of Heyer's best novels. It's certainly not on par with "Frederica" or the "The Grand Sophy," which I think are her greatest works.
Entertaining,.......2004-07-20
I recently rediscovered this book and was happy to have found it again. I enjoyed it much better the second time around.

Book Description
In 1975, Robert A. Heinlein was sixty-six, at the height of his literary career; J. Neil Schulman was twenty and hadn't yet started his first novel. Because he was looking for a way to meet his idol, Schulman wangled an assignment from the New York Daily News--at the time the largest circulation newspaper in the U.S.--to interview Heinlein for its Sunday Book Supplement. The resulting taped interview lasted three-and-a-half hours. This turned out to be the longest interview Heinlein ever granted, and the only one in which he talked freely and extensively about his personal philosophy and ideology.
"The Robert Heinlein Interview" contains Heinlein you won't find anywhere else--even in Heinlein's own "Expanded Universe." If you wnat to know what Heinlein had to say about UFO's, life after death, epistemology, or libertarianism, this interview is the only source available.
Also included in this collection are articles, reviews, and letters that J. Neil Schulman wrote about Heinlein, including the original article written for The Daily News, about which the Heinleins wrote Schulman that it was, "The best article--in style, content, and accuracy--of the many, many written about him over the years."
This book is must-reading for any serious student of Heinlein, or any reader seeking to know him better.
Customer Reviews:
Trying to Find the Real Heinlein.......2006-04-07
Any Heinlein fanatic is always on the lookout for anything either by or about the man. This book has some 20,000 words from him, mainly about his political beliefs, but also with a few insights into some of his novels, methods of writing, and his characters, though I think someone versed in Heinlein's works can gain more of this latter from the interstitial material in Expanded Universe.
Schulman did this as a phone interview in 1973, when Schulman was in his early twenties, and like most young men, he was obviously sure that he had the answers to the riddles of the universe. This attitude comes through very strongly, and it is quite interesting to see how Heinlein carefully sidestepped any endorsement of the agenda Schulman was pushing without being either condescending or confrontational, even if Schulman's agenda was close to Heinlein's own ideas about government. Heinlein comes across here as a man who is comfortable with his own value set that he had built up from continual queries and observations over his life span, and dealing with such an upstart was old hat. But it is also clear from this that Heinlein's core beliefs in regards to the role of government is very definitely Libertarian in nature. Those who have read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress will recognize the portrait of Professor de la Paz in his comments here - I was strongly reminded of Prof's comments about various types of anarchists and how he could get along with most of them, even though none of them matched his own beliefs. More than anything else, though, this interview brings out very clearly that much of the philosophy and opinions about the state of the world that permeate his novels (especially his later ones) were things that Heinlein himself believed in, and were not just ideas he threw into his books to stir up debate.
Besides the interview itself, the rest of this book is filled with other items Schulman has written about Heinlein or his books. As these items were written over a span of many years and for multiple different markets, you will find certain things repeated: the basic biographical sketch of Heinlein, certain repeated (memorable) quotes from Heinlein, etc. His reviews of various Heinlein novels, however, I thought were very shallow, regardless of the fact that someone thought they were good enough to not only print, but pay him for. There are probably far better reviews of these novels here on this site, even though they're written by `amateurs'. Schulman should also have done a better job of proofreading this material - at one point he misspells Samuel R. Delany's last name, and there are quite a few typos riddling this material.
Thus, other than the interview itself, this book has little to offer. And the interview is not as informative as it could have been, given Schulman's obvious agenda, though it does provide another view into just what kind of man Heinlein was. Recommended for dyed-in-the-wool Heinlein fans only.

A Must For Heinlein Fans.......2004-01-05
A superb interview plus fine reviews. Mrs. Heinlein is right. This interview is done with intelligence and intellectuality combined with a deep knowledge of and love for the subject (RAH's oeuvre and by implication RAH). It is an interview worthy of Heinlein, whose depth of thought is underappreciated. It was a great pleasure to read.
Spend your money on RAH's works instead.......2003-12-31
I consider Robert Heinlein one of the great moral and intellectual guides in my life. His science fiction and essays were guideposts as I grew up. However, I can't recommend J. Neil Schulman's compilation of his interactions with RAH.
The book is rife with typos and is printed in a typeface big enough to qualify for a "Large Print Edition," stamp. ... I should have realized the amateur quality of the publication from the cover photo: a snapshot taken in dim light without a flash. The publisher couldn't even make the effort to color-correct the picture.
Most of the content is Schulman name-dropping and pushing a Libertarian agenda. Not that Libertarianism is a bad thing, it's just Schulman harps on it relentlessly. The foreword by Brad Linaweaver, another flaming Libertarian, intimates that Schulman is a master author, only reined in by Organized Media because of his hard-hitting, challenging, Libertarian-based efforts. If the work in this book is any indication of Schulman's other writing, it isn't a Libertarian stance that's holding him back, it's talent.
The Q&A interview between Schulman and RAH show, to an embarrassingly degree, how shallow Schulman's questions were. Many read like something Comic Book Guy from "The Simpson's" would ask. Granted, Schulman was in his early 20s when he conducted the interview, but most of the interview devolves down to political discussions with a tolerant old man showing a vertically-educated young turk how to think beyond his narrow outlook.
Sadly, you won't get much insight into RAH's thoughts on writing or his creative process; Schulman's too busy asking RAH what he thinks life will be like in a 24th Century inhabited by Lazarus Long.
Spend your money on RAH's own works and you'll get a much better idea of what the man was like and what he thought.
Essential for Heinlein Fans.......2003-07-21
Obviously any Heinlein fanatic like myself should own this book. The interview is very interesting and adds some insight to what Heinlein was really like. The draw back is, in both the filler material and to some extent the interview, Schulman has a political axe to grind. This detracted from the interview and other material in the book.
Not much insight on Heinlein.......2003-06-18
Not recommended unless you are interested in hearing Schulman expound on the virtues of libertarianism. You'll learn more about Heinlein from Expanded Universe and Grumbles from the Grave.

The Message for Today!.......2007-05-19
I first read this book in the early '80s, and remeber how I was reassured of God's great Love for me. I passed it on to someone else, and lost track of it. Recently I rediscovered it, and I have been giving it to family and friends as gifts. Seems that everyone who reads it is amazed at the message of God's Love for us. Pastor Buck writes as if he were speaking directly to the reader. I am still amazed at the simplicity and yet great depth of this message.
Angels On Assignment.......2007-05-15
One of the most thrilling books I have ever read on Angels. Pastor Buck had to be a great pastor.
Inspirational.......2007-03-27
I was fortunate enough to hear Pastor Roland Buck in preson just weeks before he went to glory. He was just an ordinary man living his life for the Glory of God. He was used by God to reveal an extraordinary message.
Angels Look Out For the Worthy........2006-12-03
Angels are on the earth today. Roland Buck met the Angel Gabriel one early morning at 2 a.m. while out with his devoted Great Dane Queenie. My guardian angel seems to be on vacation. I sent her to Hawaii on the 9th to watch over Chuck, but she was missing in the early hour of 4:30 when a devil tried to strangle me in the laundry room. He's been here almost a year now and is allowed to carry a weapon (a walking stick with a saber hid) and has threatened others with it. Thank God, he did not bring it to the laundry when he assaulted me. My angel may have fallen in love with Chuck and adopted him to care for since I can't, but Lady Mercy was with me. I have three serious contusions and the police told me to buy a gun. But now we have mental people among us who would get off scott free if they killed an innocent person.
Angels come in many forms. I too met Gabriel named Glenn after the near-death who said he had been in the military (but looks to be a con man par excellence). The convict Caldwell put J. R. up to this attack and was asking people here if they had seen him as he needed to take care of some business. I'm just wondering how much he paid him to nearly kill me and was wanting his money back when he saw me standing there. He was worse than a bear or a wild Indian; he kept saying I will kill you. God was watching over me, that's for sure, but why didn't he send one of his male angels to deal with Boldwin. I fell on the bus and was injured badly, and now this. I need an angel to hover over me until I can get moved from this horrid place. "Heavenly Father, as a tired bird is lifted by an unexpected gust of wind and is raised to a higher altitude (Jonathan Livingstone Seagull) and soars on with new strength and energy to come and lift me in the same way. But not death! May your blessed strength surge through feelings that will energize and excite me this day. Thank You!"
There have been other accounts of angels coming to earth to save a person from his own destruction and from evil people, Ephesians 1:4-5 and Leviticus 16:6, 11-12. God has given us his word and his holy spirit because he wants the world to see us in the same way he sees us, which is looking like Jesus. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son.
Best Pro-Bible Angel "Expose" 2Date...........2005-12-27
I found nothing in Sr. Pastor Buck's accounts of angelic encounters to be in conflict with Scripture; and give his exciting look into God's military OP forces the highest recommendation; this revealing account of Michael and God's fighting forces; Gabriel and other "chief of staff" communicators, is indeed awesome and delightful; packed full of insights and life-enriching points and pointers. Pastor Buck also delves into God's throne room system including preplanning all details of all persons' lives; God's record-keeping system, etc., etc. No other book has as much inside info on angel activities; nor as wide a scope. God obviously set it all up so we eventually would pick up and use what Rev. Buck experienced to enrich our understanding of how much God loves people and recognize some of the depth of His love by peeking in on how much activity goes on behind the scenes to demonstrate his love and support for His highest level of creation: people. I believe an even far-larger audience is yet to be exposed to Rev. Buck's account; somehow this storyline is going to be multiplied exponentially in the near future to reach huge masses of people and encourage them to study and read God's ultimate message in the Holy Bible.
Like others I read the book years ago, and loaned and lost it; then when online www.shopping became possible, located another used copy here at Amazon and got back what I had lost; hanging on much tighter this time to a real keepsake item.
Get a copy if you haven't and check it out for yourself; a rare book indeed: a fascinating, exciting inside look at such things as the size, features, personality, and dress style of Michael, God's Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman of Military Operations; even including his own comments on how General Michael looks forward to arresting and "jailing" rebel Prince Lucifer at the takeover of the world system by CEO Jesus; Gabriel's communication operations to carry God's messages and instructions to people such as Daniel, Mary, Elizabeth, Paul, etc. There is so much good stuff between the covers that you never heard of before on the mechanics and details of angelic activity, that you won't want to put down the book until you learn everything Rev. Buck has to share on this most-interesting topic.

Angels On Assignment is the story of a visit to a resort where all of the guests, except the narrator, are angels on vacation. It is filled with episodes of fun and frivolity; intermixed with profound lessons, exploring the nature of our reality and our existence in the universe.
Customer Reviews:
Divinely Inspired .......2005-02-16
I read very few novels these days, and Angels on Assignment was a refreshing break that renewed my spirit. A botched room reservation forces the main character, Michael, to look for other lodging on vacation. Remembering something that the woman in the airport gift shop told him, he manages to find his way to the secluded resort she mentioned. He is initially refused a room. The desk clerks change their minds when they notice the lapel pin he is wearing, a gift from the woman in the gift shop. He soon finds out that all of the other guests are angels on vacation. What follows is quite a journey as the angels work toward teaching him what he already knows but has forgotten. Michael Howard has placed some of the thought-provoking passages in the book in bold print, but I have found many more. To those who have been on their journey for a long time, these words will have deep meaning. They will cause the unenlightened to question life and their own thoughts, and will no doubt change at least one belief. Changes in our thoughts and beliefs change our lives, and I know that mine will change for the better. I found many of these thoughts and statements to be profound, reminding me of what I already know and have also forgotten. This work was, without a doubt, divinely inspired. I intend to read it more than once. At just 150 pages, it is easy reading with an incredibly powerful message. I couldn't put it down and read the entire book in three evenings. Don't miss this one!

this is a book, which you will not put down. It opens your heart to God's Word and draws you closer to Him. This is a Book for keeping. Hopefully the Author will publish more books.
A Sobering Literary Experience.......1999-01-30
Pastor Buck's experiences as told in this book have truly opened my heart even more to Christ! The most prevalent message throughout is just how much Jesus loves us all. We don't have to be Ministers, TV Evangelists, or even the Pope to receive the love of Christ or his graces. It is ours for the asking, but we must ask! Having personally felt the presence of an Angel before, Pastor Buck's accounts of his visitations are clear and exciting. I kept on reading and reading, I could not put this book down. This book is about the two way street of love, faith, and commitment. Read it now and have it change your life forever!
