Book Description
Based on a real-life character, More Joy in Heaven is a gripping account of the tragic plight of young Kip Caley, a notorious bank-robber released early from prison and feted by society as a returning prodigal son.
Earnest, optimistic, and fired by reformist zeal, Kip eventually comes to realize that the welcome of his supporters is superficial and that their charity is driven by self-interest.
More Joy in Heaven was first published in 1937.
Customer Reviews:
A frustrating and moving book........2003-08-12
I read "More Joy in Heaven" by Morley Callaghan in a few short hours. I don't think I have ever been so frustrated and moved by a book. It lays the most horrible and beautiful aspects of human nature out along side one another, and I can't understand how a man (Callaghan) can have such clear vision.
The main character (Kip) is a convicted bank robber who believed that he was above everyone else. It was this sense of detachment that allowed him to commit his crimes without guilt, and which eventually got him stuck in prison. But once in prison Kip began to realize that there was more to life than being a headline. He began to slowly reform himself. He wanted to be like other people, to be with them, as friends and as equals. He wanted to lead a normal life.
The novel starts as he is being released on parole. His release was organized by a chairitable senator, inspired by the completeness of Kip's reform. Once free, Kip had intended to work as a garbage man, or as a street cleaner, but he finds himself a sudden celebrity. I don't want to ruin the novel, so I won't describe any more, but I will say that Callaghan does not write one dimensional characters. This book is captivating and has a ring of truth that makes the mistakes of the main character all the more harrowing.
I strongly reccomend this book.
Plays on real life.......2000-01-27
I found this book hard to get into at first but as it progressed I got a better understanding of the character's and situations they were faced with. This book displays such motives as once a bankrobber always a bankrobber. Kip Caley let his goals defeat him. When he relized his dream couldn't come true he felt as if his world was falling around him and all he could do was sit and watch.
Great book about the life and times of an ex-con.......1999-11-18
Morley Callghan portrays Kip Caley as a man who is released from prison due to his good behaviour. As a result of his good behaviour he is praised amongst the town. Things turn bad when Kip loses his job and the town gets tired of his image.
Startling revelation into the mind of a criminal.......1998-01-09
A well written novel based on the life of a born again criminal who's life goes from bad to good to worse, very dramatic, quick read.

Book Description
Deep in rural Idaho, a brigade of militant white supremacists calling themselves the Soldiers of Jordan is preparing to launch a desperate struggle that threatens to forever alter the nation's balance of power.
When the country's ultrasecret Unit One goes on high alert, operative Melody Beecham is ordered to infiltrate the Soldiers of Jordan. Her instructions: to exploit their leader's penchant for attractive Aryan-featured blondes.
Fellow operative Nikolai Anwar is working from another angle: he must win the trust of a high-powered senator's wife in order to uncover a trail of corruption tied to the government--through whatever means necessary. But Nikolai's dedication to Unit One is in direct opposition to his growing feelings for Melody.
Working undercover, Nikolai and Melody are both ordered to pursue relationships with other people for the sake of the mission. But can they survive in a world of hidden agendas, where one false move could be their last?
Customer Reviews:
La Femme Nikita (Series) Ripoff or Homage? (Spoilers).......2007-09-13
If you haven't read the book and are familiar with the series, the next paragraph will be indirectly revealing of one of the novel details.
Unit One/Section One. Melody & Nikolai/Michael & Nikita. Lady Rozlyn/Roberta. Johnston Yates/Mr. Jones. Now these are a little trickier: Mac/Madeline? Sam/Seymour(Birkoff)?
Now don't get me wrong, aside from the almost identical names of the agencies and exceedingly similar two main characters, the supporting characters in the story aren't really like their counterparts in the series except in terms of initials/names and job/position. However, that said, the first 150 pages of the book were so full of LFN allusions, that I was, quite frankly, annoyed. FULL PURSUIT just isn't as good as LFN was (on bad day), and the allusions really just constantly reminded me of that.
The thing that really put it over the top for me was Melody's obsession with her father reminiscent of Nikita's search for her own in the last couple of seasons of the series. And in one internal monologue, Nikolai describes Unit One (in paraphrase) as an malevolent organization that accomplishes its ends no matter what (a al Section One). My immediate reaction was that the author was trying too hard to recreate Section. By the end of the book, I realized I was right. Mac was nowhere near as ruthless as Ops and Madeline. Sam not as clever as Birkoff. Section One took the tact of "it's better to apologize than ask permission." It was no holds barred. Unit One seemed trapped by redtape and at the mercy of politicians.
Anyhow, outside of those first 150 pages and the last 10 or so, the story isn't bad. It had some good pacing and there were moments where I couldn't put it down. But in spite of all that buildup, the payoff was pretty lousy. The ending was anticlimatic, seemed rushed, and came across as a secondary thought.
All in all, the novel reads like a thriller with the romance secondary. Unfortunately, the ending forces the reader to see the whole thriller/action story as an excuse for the romantic story. The author needed a reason to tear these two people apart and then put them back together again. Once they were back together, it was like the author said, "oh, yeah, I gotta end this mystery/conspiracy thing."
I never read the first novel, so this was my introduction to these characters. I have to admit, I didn't like them all that much especially Melody. She came across as santimonious and self righteous, particularly where her father was concerned. Nikolai was more interesting and I was left with wanting to know more about him. Mostly before he met Melody to be honest.
Overall, it's an okay story. The romance seems lukewarm at best. It's more "told" than "shown" which is why if feels secondary. But that could be the function of this being the second novel in a series. The conspiracy angle seems a "stretch". The cult plot point is perhaps the most interesting and perhaps deserved more focus. One aspect that truly annoyed me was the cult leader said his last name was anglicized from the Arabic. I'm familiar with Arabic and for the life of me, I can't figure out what the Arabic would have been. The author never specifies. Given the importance of the leader's background, I think it's a detail that should have been included. On the other hand, I got the feeling the author included the line because it sounded good rather than it being based in reality.
Anyhoo...tactically, Unit One seems a mess. Near the end of the novel, they could rush out a private jet with false Secret Service papers, but no communication units. Not even two cell phones?
LFN fans will probably either love FULL PURSUIT or hate it. Me? I certainly didn't love it. But I didn't completely hate it either. If I had to choose, I'd say I'm indifferent about it.
Full Pursuit.......2005-03-31
Unit One, the highly classified group of operatives who defend the US from things the more public agencies can't combat, may have finally asked too much of Melody Beecham. Her latest assignment involves going undercover at a religious cult and seducing a man she does not know. Moreover, she is involved with Nikolai Anwar, and his assignment involves seducing a powerful senator's wife whose daughter belongs to the same cult Melody has infiltrated. While Nik is quite matter of fact about the necessities, Melody can't believe they are expected to do this. Nonetheless, they go their separate ways into the tinderbox of race, religion, and fanaticism.
*** Tension runs at warp speed from beginning to end. This is a book that may well be a cross over novel, bringing in readers who are more suspense fans than romance fans. ***
Five stars is not enough.......2005-01-19
Since the first word of the book till the last one you will be hooked to this book, although I didn't read the first book (and I will read it) while reading it you won't have any doubt of why Melody hated or loved her team persons.
I don't know how real is life within bigot organizations, but everything I've read is like what is written in this book so I think that Melody's experience in that camp could be true.
Another interesting thing in this reading is that JC puts all government people as they really are, sometimes human, sometimes selfish and most of the time ruthless but she does that without pushing too much the trait of every character.
Definitely I'll look forward to reading more of JC's books and I'll recommend her as a very good writer.
So for me this book deserves six stars.
Jasmine Creswell Does it Again.......2004-11-16
This second trilogy Full Pursuit it is a nice second finish. Once again Melody finds herself thrust into another situation. Where Unit One wants to recruit for a job. She wants no part until they promise to tell her who her father is. Then she is off to save the world again. Then the excitement really begins. This is a must read.
exhilarating romantic suspense thriller .......2004-10-27
Though she enjoys her assignments working for the top secret Unit One, Melody Beecham has not forgotten that she is a "blackmailed" participant. Her latest project reminds her of the negative side of her work. She is to join the Soldiers of Jordan and, if necessary, seduce the leader Zachary Wharton, in order to spy on their activities; this white supremacist group has plans that will shake the nation if they succeed.
Melody travels to White Falls, Idaho to the campus of the church of the Soldiers of Jordan and gets inside, but her relationship with fellow Unit One operative Nikolai Anwar implodes. Still he remains her solo hope to stay alive in this dangerous undertaking. She knows that a reporter for the Idaho Chronicle died while investigating this sect and two FBI agents were identified and tossed off campus. Someone inside the Feds is feeding Zachary in his "Onward Christian Soldier" war of hate against Islam and Christian moderates; no telling what he would do if he learns Melody's identity.
FULL PURSUIT is an exhilarating romantic suspense thriller that emphasizes the action and tension over the romance though readers will understand how the undercover work has damaged the under cover relationship between the heroic duo. Once the story line resets the key players and moves to Idaho, the pace goes into hyperspeed and never slows down until the final confrontation. The return of Nick and Melody, stars of DECOY, will please fans, but the tale belongs to the villain; a charismatic, brilliant individual who can see beyond the adulation of his followers to know when "serpents" are in his Eden.

From the author: This work examines the integral nexus of teacher and student, suggesting that efforts, resources, and human resource functions can and should intentionally focus on the relationship as paramount. Other aspects of learning potential are de minimus if teacher-student interaction is not efficient and affective. School leadership, learning paradigms, and hiring should focus on student-centered approaches that require collective efficacy, teachers becoming significant others in their student's lives, and development of resiliency in student intellectual attitudes. Reframing of the human resource function to recruit and retain life-enhancing educators who initiate rigorous and relevant learning, facilitate mastery, and incite intellectual curiosity for its own sake within students is called for. A suggested administrative interview and training examples are provided.

One Star.......2007-08-06
This was not a good start to a new trilogy and the other two books that followed were sub-par compared to the previous Young Jedi Knight books. Something felt off I don't know if it was the writing, the plot, or even the charactors but it just didn't flow as well as the previous books.
An excellent start to the final trilogy of the series.......2001-01-10
Part of what fascinated me about this book right from the beginning was that all the kids, while still in character, seemed way older, and supposedly only a few months had passed between The Emperor's Plague and this book. It was an extremly well written book, with a well defined, understandable plot. In it, Jacen and Jaina and Anakin all go on a short vacation with their Dad (Han of course) to go and check out a really cool race on Ord Mantell. Once they get there they meet Anja Gallandro, a girl who hates Han because she believes he murdered her father. She plays on his guilt, and somehow convinces him to go try to right a bloody civil war on her home planet. Through an interesting chain of events they meet back up with there other friends (big surpise), as well as Anja who by the way is not only working for some evil smuggler guy, but also is addicted to some kind of drug. I also find it very interesting that all through this whole series Jacen is hung up on Tenel Ka, and now the instant some other pretty girl comes into the picture, he instantly forgets she ever even existed, and I sense the same thing beginning to happen to Zekk and Jaina too. This only serves even more to convince me that these budding relationships were silly to begin with, though I must admit I always enjoyed Jacen and Tenel Ka. As for Anja herself, well, she was cool and all but I found myself not really liking her much, and I just couldn't really care about her like I could the other characters. She just seemed more like a glorified and somewhat twisted version of an early Mara Jade to me. Another thing that bothered me was that even though Anakin was with them throughout the whole book, he was practicly ignored and it seemed as if they somehow forgot about him at some points. This was somewhat irritating because Anakin has always been my favorite of the Solo children. Besides those minor details though, this was an exellent book. I also think it is cool that a Star Wars book can deal with serious issues such as drug adiction. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Star Wars, though it will probably make more sense if you have read the previous 11 first.
An adequate beginning of the end.......2000-08-19
This is the first book in a new YJK trilogy, Under Black Sun, which will conclude (and had already done so) the Young Jedi Knights books. Ah yes, all good things must come to an end. But if this is any indication, it's goin' out with bang. It starts with Han and his kids going to Ord Mantell (where Han and Leia where almost captured by a pair of bounty hunters over twenty year before.) Han is there to judge a Blockade Runner race, and on the pace lap, the Falcon is nearly blown to space dust by a minefield planted by Black Sun. Anakin takes a piece of the mines to analyze it. Enter Anja Gallandro, however, and things get hot. She takes the piece of the mine, and faces down Han, who supposedly killed her father during his adventures twenty-five years before. Zekk, Tenel Ka, and Lowie enter the Lightning Rod in the race, and the YJK are reunited. Anja challenges Han to go to her war-torn planet, Anobis, where the farmers and miners are constantly at war, blaming each other for the conflict. The kids get split between the mining camps and the farming village, but are reunited and are able to sow the seeds of peace between the warring groups. Anja returns with the YJK to Yavin 4 to see if she had any Force potential, and the book concludes. The authors leave some interesting loose ends to tie up, which are drawn into neat little bow-ties at the end, except for a couple ;-) See my Crisis on Crystal Reef if you *really* don't get it.
Could Be Better.......1999-08-23
The rest of the series is really awesome but since the lately its been more about Jaina/Zekk and Jason/Tenel Ka's infatuations with each other. It'd be better if they just had more of the action than the mushy falling in love stuff. It is science fiction after all.
Pretty good, but not Anderson's best..........1999-03-29
YJK RULE!!!!!!! RtOM was pretty good, but not the best of the series. The Jaina/Zekk and Jacen/Tenal Ka things were ignored which didn't help the book any.
