Book Description
Jamesland, the buoyant second novel by Michelle Huneven, critically acclaimed author of
Round
Rock, is a witty, sophisticated, and deeply humane comedy of unlikely redemption.
When thirty-three-year-old Alice Black discovers a deer in her dining room after fighting with her boyfriend, she wonders if she’s going crazy. Pete Ross, forty-six, knows he’s crazy. He’s wrecked his marriage, slashed his wrists, and done time in a psychiatric institution, and now he's being cared for by his mother, who’s a nun. Forty-five-year-old Helen Harland, a spirited Unitarian Universalist minister, is being driven crazy by her hostile church administration. Living in Los Feliz, California, the three meet at Helen’s Wednesday midweek services. Though initially
incompatible, the sheer force of Helen’s idiosyncratic ministering (her “variety show of religious experience”)–paired with Alice’s illustrious ancestor William James–proves to be a catalyst for friendship and a kind of transcendence. Generous and compassionate, Michelle Huneven delivers a joyful new novel about love, faith, and a few wayward souls waiting for life to begin.

Thoughtful and charming.......2007-09-11
Although slightly uneven writing. Best if you like philosophy mixed in with the story, which the author does well.
she dreams of deer.......2007-07-14
A strong thread of spirit runs through this book in the form of religions, visions, seances and psychic flashes, but in truth, the reader is completely free to dismiss it as "pure hokum." The book takes some time to get going. It seems like it would be difficult to love these troubled, hurting characters; a haunted bartender with no taste for joy and a hunger for married men, a brilliant and suicidal man with muliple restraining orders, a perky pastor who absolutely hates her church. But when the author loves her characters as much as Huneven does, we have no choice. We have to love them. This is a thoughtful, sweetnatured read, full of small details and tolerant affection. I never laughed out loud, but I smiled plenty. It's that kind of book.
not enough story .......2006-12-01
The writing kept me going through half the book but it was not enough to get me to the end. I gave up. The book does not have a story. I will look for the author again but next time I hope she has something to write about.
One of the Best.......2006-10-19
Quite frankly, this is one of the best books I've read this year. A total joy from beginning to end.
"Name It The Mystical Region" (William James).......2006-04-14
My copy had the sticker "Signed Copy" in bright orange on the jacket of the book, obscuring the "H" in the author's surname so it looked like "Uneven." That isn't fair, but I'll tell you what's really unfair, celebrity photographer Marion Ettlinger's misbegotten portrait of Huneven on the inside back jacket. Ettlinger makes a beautiful woman look like a silvery wraith of a wreck, like the last days of Gloria Grahame. Oh, the inhumanity! I kept looking at the portrait the way you would any other miscarriage of justice, like "J'Accuse."
The book itself is rather good, and a loving portrait of some areas of LA that are often overlooked. Helen's church is in Los Feliz, it's sort of funky, sort of celebrity chic, in the flatlands between the observatory and the freeway down Vermont. Helen is a good Kathy Bates part, or Erma Bombeck, a woman who's always outspoken like Dolores Claiborne, says what's on her mind, and yet takes the pulpit from an honest desire to help people. I love the part when Helen goes on a cruise and, when asked what she doesm refuses to say, allowing that once people find out her occupation, they get a certain wrong impression of the kind of person she is. This kills all conversation until another kindred soul suggests that none of the cruise passengers tell any of the others what they do in regular life, let them all be going incognito like celebrities, then guess on the last day! A handy solution to another one of Helen Harland's "I'd rather not" ethical dilemmas. She's sometimes fun to be around, but most of the time you'd rather read about her than know her or have to sit through her humorous sermons.
Alice and her aunt, Kate, are blood kin to the American philosopher William James, and a lot of James' speculations on the afterlife and its northern lights get filtered into Huneven's workable prose. The plot of the book is reslly more like a Henry James who never went to Europe but loved crossing the 405 back and forth, occasionally escaping through the mountain passes to Glendale and its delights. If you've read the late Henry James novel, THE OUTCRY, many of Huneven's set-ups will be familiar to you; I wonder if anyone's ever put together a mini-anthology of Henry James on food. One of Huneven's characters is a professional chef (a crazy one, but that's redundant) and her pictures of food are mouth-watering, just like in THE OUTCRY. I look forward to Huneven's next book. Maybe it could have been a little shorter.
Book Description
The devastatingly handsome manager of the Hotel Mount Jefferson, Gabe Trask, was all too eager to offer a wide array of amenities to Hadley Stone when he thought she was just a holiday guest. But once he learned that she was really there as a representative of the cost-cutting management company that had just acquired his hotel, Hadley expected Gabe to really be on her case. And he was -- just not in the way she'd imagined....
For Gabe knew that despite all her down-to-business, cost-cutting talk, Hadley was a romantic at heart-one whom he was inexplicably finding hard to resist. And he could see in her eyes that the feeling was becoming mutual. Now all he had to do was convince her to check her business instincts at the door -- and focus on the personal....

A Special Holiday Romance.......2005-12-12
Kristin Hardy delivers a heartfelt story in Under The Mistletoe.
Gabe Trask loves his job as the manager of The Hotel Mt. Jefferson. He is entranced by Hadley Stone. He doesn't realize at first that Hadley isn't a guest, she is part of the new owners cost cutting management. Gabe tries to keep things all business but something keeps pulling him to Hadley the woman.
Hadley Stone has spent her entire life trying to please her perfectionist father. She comes to the hotel determined to trim the fat from the operation. But the hotel and its manager work their way into her heart. Can Hadley fight for this new relationship and also stand up to her father?
Under The Mistletoe is an emotional, moving story. Gabe and Hadley relationship is a slow dance of desire. Kristin Hardy writes a story that will stay with you long after you have finished the book. Looking forward the next book in this series.
A Wonderful Holiday Romance!.......2005-12-06
Crisp writing, quick pacing and a winter wonderland of enchantment bring to life a great holiday romance just in time for Christmas!
Kristin Hardy continues her "Holiday Hearts" series with a story set in a place made for romance. The Hotel Mount Jefferson, located in the heart of northern New Hampshire's beautiful ski country, is beloved by its sexy and hard working Manager Gabe Trask. When Hadley Stone, the representative of the company who now owns it, arrives with ideas how to cut costs, Gabe must turn on both his charms and the hotel's to appeal to Hadley's romantic side.
The heroine's history with her authoritative father, who is also her boss, plays well in her indecisiveness between doing what her heart tells her vs. what her business mind knows has to happen in order to please her father. The hero's family is just as strong a presence (including a great moment between the couple from the first book in the series WHERE THERE'S SMOKE ~ the hero is Gabe's brother.) But its Gabe and Hadley themselves, and the business plan they come up to save the hotel, that ultimately forces them to come to terms with their relationship that drive this story to a rewarding happily ever after.
Great secondary characters (like Jacob, the third Trask brother whose book VERMONT VALENTINE, comes out in February 2006), and the Hotel Mount Jefferson itself, makes this a fantastic read!

Book Description
It was this novel, together with Koji Suzuki's Ring series, that begun the J-Horror boom. A pageturner about the rebellion of mitochondria, it became the Japan Horror Novel Award's first winner and the inspiration for a videogame that was a stateside hit.

Worth sticking with.......2007-06-27
Most of the action in this book takes place over the last few chapters. Sena spends a very long time explaining quite a bit of biology so at times it reads almost like a textbook or maybe lecture notes. Stick with it though because it gets very interesting once the plot starts moving.
Slow at first but quite Interesting.......2006-12-16
That's the main reason I did not give this a 5/5 rating is due to it's slow start. However, once it gets going, it is a good book. If you aren't much of a romantic though, it's not really for you because it is somewhat of a romance/sci-fi novel. Quite a well thought out story if our Mitochondria could actually do that...
Top-notch SF/Horror .......2006-02-22
Having played the two "Parasite Eve" videogames, I was very happy to finally read the original novel upon which the games were based (the games are actually sequels to the book, taking place in the US and involving new characters). Hideaki Sena's debut novel is a strong science-fiction horror story, but it might not be for everyone.
This is one horror novel that really gets under your skin, and the final third of the novel is filled with many graphic, scary moments. To put it one way, imagine if Dean Koontz and Michael Crichton decided to team up and write a book together.
Sena's background in Pharmacology is evident here--the scientific jargon is at times overwhelming (even to me, and I have a biology degree!). This fact will turn off some readers. As to the complaint that the book is too gruesome--come on! Are we forgetting about Clive Barker's early stories/novels and the splatterpunk craze?
If anything, PARASITE EVE's release in English is a welcome step into bringing over more Japanese literature to America, whether it is horror, science-fiction, or contemporary. It just seems appropriate since many American writers are translated into Japanese, but not vice-versa.
I enjoyed PARASITE EVE. It's a different kind of horror story, and kudos to Vertical for bringing it to these shores.
Bien........2005-12-30
I preordered this book a number of weeks ago and finally received it and I wasn't disappointed. I know nothing about the video game and to be honest am not particularly interested in the video game, but the novel's wonderfully inventive and incredibly entertaining.
What the hell is up the the first reviewer, "K. Jasmin "Catjazz",??! What an irritating, useless review. It's riddled with gramatical errors and I have no idea what the hell it's talking about.
You love it or hate it.......2005-12-23
To be frank, if you don't like romance, you probably won't enjoy this book, despite it's science fiction overtones. Fans of the movie know what to expect from the typical Japanese horror, however, for the open minded: a good read.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good guide.......2003-02-12
Well, its hard to rate a good guide these days. I liked it. It helped me get through the game and gave me some good strategies. It was a bit thin and I thought some parts could have used some better hints, but all and all, a good book to help you out.
A Very Good Manual for the Game.......2002-05-05
This book gives all the information about the game and who all the charachters, weapons and villians are. It has an introductory section so that you know who the charachters are and what they mean. It also has a detailed section on the weapons that you can use. It then gives details on each one of the villians (NMC's) and the best weapons against each of them. It also explains how to use the parasite energy's and what you have to attain to upgrade each one. The last section of the book is a walk through, play by play, on getting through each section of the game. Some of this is a bit sketchy but it is enough information should you get stuck in a section of the game. The author recommends that you not use the play by play section unless you are really "stuck" because it will take the mystery and excitement out of the game. I have used it several times, especially when having to decode riddles. It is an excellent resource if you are the kind of person who gets really frustrated when "stuck" at certain sections of a video game. There are many different pathways to get to the ending of the game which I don't think I would have even realized had I not used the guide. I recommend it, especially if you are new to this kind of game or if you are not familiar with the first Parasite Eve or other Brady games. (Which I was not, so I think that may be another reason why this guide was so helpful and informative.)
One of the best guides I've used.......2001-07-13
This guide is very helpful, giving clear and detailed maps, lists of items, weapons, armor, etc. It was extremely informative and easy to follow. Some people complain that the guide doesn't tell you how to beat the final two bosses, but I didn't mind. I guess even writers of a strategy guide don't want to spoil ALL the fun. The only problem I had is that the section that talks about replay, bounty, scavenger, and nightmare mode seems a bit rushed. Overall, though, it's worth the $$
Best but .... ?.......2001-05-15
Yeah, its a best book for this game. But the writer hasn`t finish the game twice. Coz` I want to know if something happen if you finish the NIGHTMARE chapter. Well, what can I say I haven`t finish that chapter too.
Where can i buy the book?.......2001-03-20

The Best Strategy Guide Avaialable for any Game!.......2003-12-15
I bought this strategy guide a year or so ago when I was stuck on Parasite Eve. I just needed to get past where I was, but the strategy guide gave me more than just a hint. It gave me a whole guide for this tough game, and it was very detailed and helpful! It is also just fun to look at for some Parasite Eve junkies out there. It includes boss battles, an enemy bestiary, and a guide to the EX Game and weapon enhancements. Let me say that I would have never beaten the EX Game if it wasn't for this guide! The Ex Game is also the toughest part of the game, and I don't think that it's worth fighting through. It will take weeks to complete and for only a convoluted boss battle where Aya fights Maya. But whatever the case is, this guide is great for any PE lovers out there!
Great Source of Information.......2001-12-12
If you are stuck, this guide tell you everything!!! It has all the secrets and a few extra notes to make the game easier. It even makes the story easier to understand. You won't miss any item with this book.
A MUST have for Parasite Eve Players.......2001-11-21
Even though the game is designed so that you don't have to use a strategy guide, it is impossible to get all the items that you'll need to survive. Use this as a reference book for any items you want, and as a help when you get stuck.
MUST HAVE.......2001-10-11
If you buy the game and plan on playing the 'crud' out of it, you MUST GET THIS GUIDE!!!! It has helped me so much in the regular game and the EX version! I couldn't have defeated the final boss or even the first 10 floors of the Chrysler building without it!
Parasite Eve: A good read if you need to know everything........2001-07-01
This guide is pretty decent. There are a few errors in it and that is why I gave it only four stars. The strategies are very good however. There is a complete EX game strategy section included with maps. No longer will you feel like a rat in a maze. It also has the lyrics to the ending song (in Spanish though. Why didn't they translate into English?) I think that it is a good guide and if you feel you need it then get it. Bradygames does a very good job putting it's guides together and we should appreciate their hard work.

Now this is good!.......2000-09-27
WOW! when I first got this I thought it was just a nother lame book but boy was I wrong this Book is godlike.
Book Description
In this second book of his popular lexical trilogy, Frederick Buechner profiles more than 125 of the Bible's most holy and profane people -- and one whale. In his lively and witty prose, Buechner brings to life such moments from scripture as:
- Adam's pangs of regret for a remembered Eden
- Delilah's last glimpse of Samson as they dragged him away
- Lazarus's first impressions upon rising from the dead
To read Peculiar Treasures is to realize that many of these legendary figures are not who we thought they were. But they are -- in their human dreams, ambitions, and imperfections -- very much like us.

Peculiar Treasure: A Biblical Whose Who.......2005-09-05
Good book for anyone, I use it in my classroom to give my students more information on certain Biblical characters.
An nice sequel to "Wishful Thinking".......2002-07-26
"Peculiar Treasures" is Buechner's second in a trilogy of lexicon-style expositions, this time focusing on Biblical characters. Including some virtual unknowns alongside the "heavyweights", Buechner examines each person and tries to discover what makes them unique. Since the Biblical characters might not always be immediately familiar to the reader, there is necessarily increased length to the entries, and thus fewer entries, relative to Buechner's other two books in this series. While not quite as good as "Wishful Thinking", this book is still excellent and thought-provoking.
Thoughts to Ponder.......2001-12-07
Having enjoyed Mr. Buechner's biblical fiction, I also picked up this volume of his musings on the people of the Bible. I wasn't disappointed.
I don't know if I would recommend it as a who's who to non Christians who want a quick reference - some of the entries don't make sense if you don't know your Bible - but for those who do, it's an often amusing reflection on our faith. It's also sometimes profound. Some of my favorites - Why do discussions of David and Jonathan anymore seem to revolve around whether or not they were gay and miss the point of their wonderful friendship? What would Uriah have to say about his murder if he could chat with us now? Was Gabriel as scared as Mary during the Annunciation? What happened if, as is likely, Jesus and Judas met again when Jesus descended into hell?
This is one to keep next to your Bible. Mr. Buechner's worldview is comforting and compassionate, and this volume speaks as a little gospel light.
See these Characters brought to life.......2001-06-21
Buechner brings out the insightful traits of many Bible Characters. Each sketch prompts thought and creates a desire to meet these people and ask them questions.
After reading these sketches you will never read another name in the Bible without thinking who this person was in real life.
The Human Element of the Bible.......1999-09-19
In Peculiar Treasures, vastly underappreciated theologian and novelist Frederick Buechner blows the dust off of well-known, as well as some quite obscure, people from the Bible. In doing this, Buechner breathes life into these voices from the past, such as I have never seen or read before. He has the enviable knack for seeing far beneath the surface of the Bible, and taking the reader with him to show you what he has found there. As with most of Buechner's works, Peculiar Treasures is best taken in bite-size morsels, with a great deal of meditation in-between on what he has brought to the table. It may not turn out to be Buechner's best work, but I personally found it to be a wonderful place to start.
