Book Description
From the author of the massive New York Times best-selling series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency comes a collection of short stories that have us visiting in on romantic encounters in exotic locales around the globe.
In these hilarious stories of perverse meetings, casual dates, and romantic encounters, we are enthralled, saddened, inspired, and surprised by the encounters we're made privy to. Alexander McCall Smith, a master of the unexpected and a seamless storyteller, revels in offering us the quirky complications inherent in entanglements that human beings engineer for themselves-entanglements that can be shocking, edifying, compulsive, complicated, and, sometimes, completely disastrous.
This is an exceptional collection of stories from an author whose wide audience delights in his extraordinary imagination and delicious insights into the endlessly fascinating peculiarities of the human condition.

From the gutter to Heaven..........2007-09-08
...thoughtful stories on the theme of dating. These are artfully written, with wonderfully full quick character sketches. I borrowed the book from the library. Since I find myself thinking about the stories often, I will buy it from Amazon someday. There is always more hidden in the words of McCall Smith.
I'm so apprehensive about violence in literature, that I was on edge during the first story, waiting for something horrible to happen. Now that I know the author better, I know I can trust him to write for the mind and soul, not for cheap thrills. The first story's gentle, good-natured, intelligent daters are often on my mind somehow.
The most controversial story (A Nice Little Date?) does not, as a reviewer here has perplexingly declared, glorify child prostitution. It is a touching, complex story, which shows that everyone concerned is human.
I accepted the mystical story as readily as I accepted the others. In fact it is very welcome to read a tale where an act of faith, however unbelievable, is taken seriously by the author.
Some of the stories were pretty funny. I laughed out loud at the psychologist's tales.
I also like the Ladies Detective series. Simply a different animal. Also I am enjoying the 44 Scotland series by the same author.
"terrible things can happen on dates...".......2007-06-07
All these stories are written with the perceptive understatement that McCall Smith readers have come to expect. But as other reviewers have pointed out, don't expect the sweet comfort of a Precious Ramotswe mystery.
Locales define some of the stories - Rhodesia (Bulawayo), Australia (Calwarra and Far North) - but the events described rise out of the surrounding landscape to become universal. Some are about dates, some about marriages, some about "relationships." Some are hilarious, some are tragic, but even the tragedies have their flashes of comedy (Doris Lessing situations as told by David Lodge). If you like black humor, quirky characters, and zany situations, there are several gems here you will enjoy. My favorite is Calwarra...
So Different, and That May Be Why We Are Not Accepting This Book.......2006-09-11
McCall Smith is one thing in "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series -- Amusing. He is the same in the "44 Scotland Street" series as well as the "Isabel Dalhousie" series. Each is humorous, lovely to read, and full of smiling anecdotes.
It appears, that like most writers, McCall Smith wanted to do something different -- much like a type-cast actor wants to play a role the opposite of his/her type. And, this book is different -- much darker and full of irony which does well resemble Roald Dahl [as so stated on the book cover's review -- so, yes, do judge a book by a cover this time].
Is it good? Yes. Is it like the other books you have read? Definately not. Should you commence reading this with expectations that it will resemble the others? No. And if you do, you will be disappointed as shown by other reviews herein which contrast this to his other successful series.
So, Dahl fans and other readers of dark irony, embrace this book. McCall Smith readers who want to laugh and giggle, you may be well advised to avoid this book.
A different kind of book.......2005-11-17
If you're an Alexander McCall Smith fan, you will enjoy this book because no one writes quite like he does. His prose is easy to follow, understandable and fluid. His insights are profound and his storytelling techniques unsurpassed. However, if you think this book is a collection of romantic tales, you will be very disappointed. The stories in this book are on the strange side, some bizarre and dark.
There are nine stories:
Wonderful Date is about a German gentleman of means, Herr Brugli, and his equally financially endowed lady friend, Madame Verloren van Thermaat. The story surrounds events that take place on one of their afternoon dates.
Nice Little Date could've been left out of the book for my money. You can decide for yourself.
Bulawayo is the longest of the stories (about 60 pages) and takes place in Rhodesia. It's the story of a shy young girl who marries an emotionally damaged young man and what happens to them as a result.
Far North takes place in the Cairns area of Australian and is about a young woman who accepts a date with a young man named Bill Jameson. She doesn't know him personally, but is aware of him through work associations. Their date turns out, well, interesting. This one's a bit bizarre, but has its own kind of humor.
Intimate Accounts is just that. It's a psychiatrist telling tawdry tales about some of his patients.
Calwarra is about a young Alice, raised in rural Australia by her father after her mother dies shortly after she turns twelve. Alice turns out very well and, it seems, is artistically talented. A teacher in her school wants her to go to Paris to art school, but Daddy has other ideas. Enter young John Page, number three son of a neighboring farmer.
Fat Date is about the adventures (or misadventures) of two rotund people who are matched through a dating service for fat people.
Maternal Influence. If you have, know of, or can imagine a totally overbearing, self-indulgent mother, you can imagine what life is like for twenty-seven-year-old George who is still under her considerably powerful thumb.
Heavenly Date is a good story with which to end this collection. It certainly has its heavenly elements.

Heavely Date and Other Flirtations.......2005-09-10
It was pure, wise, uplifting McCall Smith until The Nice Little Date[the second chapter] then it turned dark, lustful, upsetting, disturbing because you don't expect it. Stick to Precious and Isabel.

The French talent for boredom in the bedroom.......2004-06-14
Women want to be needed; men want conquest.
Once they achieve their goals, they need to repeat. Some need physical touch to prove their worth; for others, flirting reinforces those original goals. Always, always, always, the human condition is to want more, more, more . . . . This would tend to get complicated, except jealousy also exists to cleanse our passions of spent passions.
Early in the book Luc explains to Dominique " . . . to love and to be loved were essential to being happy." She's bored with her life as a university student, which has become an endless routine of study and exams; she's bored with her lover, a fellow student and their endless routine of bed and banter. Then, like a bolt of lightning, her ability to interest a successful handsome well-married businessman proves intoxicating, alluring, and seductive.
It's a masterful story by Sagan. There are so many women who can sympathize with her description of her student lover, " . . . it was quite natural that I should have the weight of Bertrand's body on mine . . . and that we should be happy together." Somehow, she expected more than the equivalent of lying under a rumbled sack of restless potatoes.
It was a dream romance for her, running away to Cannes in Luc's convertible, tender and gentle and new and exciting, until he ordered her to "come along to bed." They shared two weeks of bedtime; and, for this poor girl from the countryside, it was a wonderful rich vacation that could never be repeated.
It was a love affair, with typical French panache and vacant meaning; she sought meaning in her life, and found only emptiness and futility. Her legs were open, her heart was closed. The music of jazz, she discovers, ". . . is a form of accelerated unconcern." As she idly drifts into an affair with Luc, being very careful not to upset his wife of whom she is very fond, she realizes she was "trapped, that was it!"
Her only calming thought was the feeling ". . . I was going to have a baby, and the certainty was actually claming." No such fear. There's no baby, no abortion. This one thought that she might have a baby -- a baby who would need her -- passes briefly and she returns to the futile search for a grown man who would want her with the same need as a baby.
By the end, with her life empty of everyone who had been present at the beginning of the story, Dominique realizes "I was a woman who had loved a man. It was a simple story." It was over. For the French, fun in a bedroom is boring.
It's definitely not a "romance" novel. Those are an American idea, the idea one can find soul-filling happiness in glorious, sweeping and wildly passionate love. The French idea is that life is a tragedy, and Sagan expresses this pessimism with skill.
Beautiful.......2001-12-05
Francoise Sagan's sublime second outing captures the essence of love. It is the tale of Dominique, a young French woman, who's honest assessment of her life leads to the realisation that feelings for her current boyfriend are only that of fondness, not love. An encounter with her boyfriend's uncle unfolds into new love, friendships and understanding.
A beautiful, somewhat sad piece, with the flowing charm of Sagan's previous work, Bonjour Tristesse. Perceptive and enchanting, Mlle Sagan has produced a book that has captured, as well as anyone ever has, love through the eyes of youth.

Though Miranda Graham is a savvy, successful fashion designer, she's never set foot outside the U.S. As a widow and a mom, she has cleaved to the familiarity of her Boulder, Colorado, home. So when business sends her to China, Miranda reels from profound culture shock. Luckily, kind Yuan Li takes the frightened visitor under his wing and offers to be her tour guide.
As Miranda adapts to chopsticks and crowded streets, she finds Li has appealing qualities beyond his perfect English and natural hospitality. A Renaissance man as well as a businessman, Li opens Miranda's heart to the countless treasures of China. With newfound courage, Miranda finds herself falling into deep, passionate love with this man whom she hardly knows. The looming deadline for her return and the threatening disapproval of a fading communist state force these lovers to make the most of their glorious time together.
Bestselling author Judith Michael has situated this familiar midlife coming of age tale in a truly unique location. Colorful descriptions of Chinese culture and atmosphere will certainly infect some readers with the travel bug. But while Miranda's character is well-developed and likable, Li's borders on stereotypical, and at times the threats to their relationship seem artificial. However, in the context of a "perfect love, imperfect world" story, these faults are entirely forgivable, and the overall story line is very entertaining.--Nancy R.E. O'Brien
Book Description
Bestselling author Judith Michael brings together the magic of East and West in a tale of heartwrenching love as vivid and breathless as the pounding energy of exotic Beijing. In a story replete with passion and enduring desire, A CERTAIN SMILE affirms that love has no borders. . . .
An American clothing designer and widowed mother of two teenagers, Miranda Graham arrives in China and is immediately overwhelmed by life in this faraway place. Then she meets Yuan Li, son of an American soldier and Chinese mother--and suddenly two worlds, two cultures, and two hearts collide. As Miranda bravely explores vistas beyond the safe, ordered limits of her own life, she is inexorably drawn to Yuan, a man who embodies all the hardship, dignity, and mystery of China. Their love is an unexpected awakening of body, mind, and spirit--even as the intrusive government and Yuan's ambitious son threaten their newfound joy, propelling them toward the most shattering choice two lovers can make.

This review is for the abridged audiobook, which I adored!.......2005-08-15
When I first noticed that this audiobook "fit" on just 2 cassettes and the entire story was told in 3 hours, I figured that it must have been heavily abridged. I didn't mind at all b/c this wasn't a book I was likely to read in its entirety, so I was glad for the opportunity to experience a shortened version of it on audio. However, the reader speaks at a much quicker pace than any other audiobook I've ever listened to, so this might have extended onto another tape had it been read by someone else - a positive thing because although I had to be extra attentive so I wouldn't miss anything, it was nice to lightly breeze right through the story in very little time.
It should be noted that the back cover mentions realities of China which test their love. None of these were developed in the plot on audio, in fact, Li's son was never introduced, so I suspect this abrigded version did cut a lot out and isn't as involved as the book. However, the cultural differences and family bonds that tested their love, and the inability to give up their homes and what was familiar to them to permenantly live in the other's world, was certainly satisfying enough for me. I honestly didn't miss what wasn't included.
I found the cultural immersion to be fascinating! I admired Miranda's character immensely and I especially appreciated how her confidence in herself, and the manner in which she projected herself, blossomed under Li's influence in her life. It's amazing how being in love has a trickle down effect into other areas of daily life! Although it was a bit odd the way Li initially approached Miranda in the airport, I also found him to be very likable (I might have fallen for him myself! lol) Their love seemed so strong, like soulmates who were meant to be together, and their relationship had such potential. As a sucker for happy endings, I would have liked to see them work out a way to stay together forever, so the end was quite disappointing and sad to me even though it was presented in a tragically beautiful way.
A Certain Smile.......2002-11-25
I was fascinated with this book! It was an interesting story with interesting characters who may not have always been predictible, but that was OK. If it weren't for the tragedy of the ending, I would probably have given this story 5 stars. I do prefer a happy ending, but occasionally life doesn't come out the way we hope or expect. Whether or not we agree with the decision the authors made for the lovers to go their separate ways without further contact, maybe it was looked at as the only way the couple could handle the absence of one another and get on with their lives.
Blah ze ending to a somewhat interesting story.......2000-10-16
Yes, I am hooked on the writing talents of Judith Barnard and Michael Fain. Yet as I make my way through their books I find Certain Smile to have left me hanging. I rather enjoyed becoming aquainted with the main characters, Li and Miranda. Theirs is a romance that springboards from a reality close to home: they are of seasoned ages, he a professional, she a budding professional, both having children, both at a point in thier lives where taking chances on the unusual (dating strangers in a foreign land) is not all too ridiculous. Mostly, I enjoy the pictures the authors drew for me of a land I've not had the privilage of visiting. It inspired me to be more inquisitive of the culture. However, beyond these few basics which kept me reading, I was disappointed in the outcome of the relationship. Miranda's character, in the end, showed lack of maturaty inconsistent with the tenor of the relationship as it was developed throughout the story. Additionally, a bit of the storyline was next to unbelievable... the wheelings and underhanded dealings of Li's son... but that along with the romance is what makes this all fanasy. And fantasy is the escape I enjoy in my free time reading!
AWFUL STORY.......2000-09-22
I could not finish this book, let alone get past page 25. The story was too slow to develop, quite boring. I found it very disturbing that a Chinese man would befriend/stalk a stranger at the airport. Neither character was very interesting. It doesn't make sense that he would show so much interest in Miranda, to show her around the country. The fact that Li was being followed didn't add anything for me. I wish I could give it NO stars but I am forced to give it ONE star.
The ending destroyed the book.......2000-09-19
I read all those pages about a person who was supposedly coming to be her own person, developing self-confidence and courage. I read about this great love that was so special. Then the ending. You won't come to America and live in my house, in my town, with my children, and my parents who won't like you. Then I don't want us to call, or write, or ever contact each other again. So much for that special relationship. My memory went back to the section where she'd had short relationships with men that she kept seeing and sleeping with even though she felt nothing. I guess this ten day fling really fits that pattern and wasn't love at all on Miranda's part. I liked Li's character far more than Miranda's. His character stayed more consistent throughout the book. I have yet to read a book with two authors that had a consistent character flow throughout the book. There are always scenes when the character does something totally different than what you've been led to expect from the previous material. I doubt that I will invest more in a Judith Michaels' book. I felt so cheated after the last chapter. Miranda had made friends and professional contacts and could have had a good life in China. Li did not have that support if he had chosen to go to America. I read a lot, and anyone who thinks life if perfect in America, and terrible elsewhere is wearing blinders. There is good and bad in every political situation where people have any freedom whatsoever.

It is the year 2057, and the last freelance private detective, partnered with an experimental A.I. named Harv, has a new case to solve involving androids, future tech wizards, out-of-control artificial intelligences, and futuristic mayhem.

Sci-Fi Pulp Detective story.......2007-08-23
If you like pulp detective fiction from the 1940's or so and science fiction you may like this story (set in 2060). Otherwise you probably think it is too foolish to read. I like science fiction and pulp detective stories but I won't rave on this book.
Shows once again that redheads are nothing but trouble.......2007-08-02
It's the not-too-distant future, but the world is a very different place. Reality TV is the preferred entertainment of the masses. Entertainment moguls will go to whatever lengths necessary to procure their next "big" star. Teen pop sensations rise to meteoric heights on their looks and dancing ability - singing talent need not apply. Teen slang is impenetrable to adults . . . wait, that's not so very different, is it?
Well, they have hover-cars. Blasters. Laser knives. How cool is that? Not to mention maid-bots, Kabuki androids and interactive computers that are intelligent enough to be your personal assistant.
Zachary Nixon Johnson is the last practicing private eye in the world and he loves his job - most days. Today, he's not so sure. He accepted an anonymous meet at a Kabuki theatre, only to be attacked upon arrival by the entire Kabuki android cast. In the process, he stops to save a luscious redhead, who we learn is named Sexy Sprockets, a teen pop super star. The next day she contacts him and announces that she needs a bodyguard, that she has received death threats. He agrees to take the case. To make matters worse, HARV - his computerized personal assistant, the most powerful computer in the world - has decided that he wants to "experience" life as a woman. As a long, lean, gorgeous red-head woman who calls herself HARA. Throw in Sexy's three back-up dancers - Missy, Sissy and Lusty, all themselves redheads - and Zach's niece Carol and he is surrounded by redheads. To make matters worse, the Faux network has decided that their new reality TV show will be called "Let's Kill Zach!" and they keep sending assassins after him. Between protecting his client and himself and trying to make peace with his increasingly wrathful girlfriend, Electra Gevada, Zach can't seem to win for losing.
Zakour and Ganem are geniuses with the English language and playfully flex and pull at it as much as possible to create some truly awe-inspiring puns and word by-play. This is definitely a book for those who love pulp sci-fi, detective noir or just a fun, well-written novel.
Ultra-lightweight SF-private eye farce.......2007-06-19
This book is Mike Hammer Jonesing on helium.
It's fast. It's sometimes funny. It's literary junk food, full of empty intellectual calories, but oh, so tasty.
The gimmick of the series, of which this is the third outing, is that a private eye straight out of a 1948 pulp magazine is operating in the California of 2060 (which oddly enough, just happens to have a foreign-born, ex-athlete, ex-star with a strong accent as governor.) The PI has a curvy female (sort of) as his assistant/secretary, a curvy, hot-tempered fiancee (sort of) and a curvy, musical (sort of) superstar client.
The plot is concerned with the machinations of the entertainment industry at its darkest and with pop-superstar angst. How can it be less than funny?
This is really more a satire of present goings-on than a traditional SF projection of the future. As such, its roots not only go back to Mickey Spillane but to Pohl and Kornbluth who were producing such things, albeit with a grimmer tone, for Galaxy Magazine back in the 1950s (and, of course, to Jonathan Swift, long before that.)
We've come a long way from "I, the Jury" and "Gladiator-at-Law," Baby.
Zakour and Ganem do it again.......2006-12-30
A fun bit of fiction. I've read their previous two Zach books and they were also good, but this one tops the previous stories. Lots of great ideas in here, but it's sadly over too soon. I see there's another newer book out by Zakour and I'm very much looking forward to reading it. If the new one is anything like this book, then I'll be very satisfied.
A great combonation of genres.......2006-06-17
Again, at the suggestion of a co-worker, I picked these up to pass some time at work. I have enjoyed the ups and downs of these crazy characters, and look forward to the next installment. If you like pulp fiction, mysteries, humor, and science fiction, you will enjoy these three books.

Cherie L. Arnold.......2007-04-09
read this book years ago and then gave back to the friend who loaned it to me. I recently have been thinking about the story and wanted to purchase it for me and to share with others. It was a very strong, inspiring story of a woman and the power of God. I recommend it to everyone
I couldn't put this book down until I finished it.......2006-08-25
Of all the "Angel" and "Out of Body Experiences" books I have read, "Murdered Heiress, Living Witness" is one of the best. (Only a few are better, and you may look at all my reviews to see these.)
I read Dr. Wagner's book many years ago, and it was one of those books you just have to read all in one setting!
I have also read the Bible from cover-to-cover, and I am not easily fooled when it comes to theological claims, so when Dr. Wagner makes the claim that God told her of the three baptisms, I was impressed. She said (on page 172) that God told her that a person is baptized once for salvation, once in water baptism and then "the baptism in the Holy Spirit, conducted by Jesus Himself as the Baptizer."
As a student of the Bible, I knew the water baptism was an outward witness to our marriage to the lamb, much as a ring is a witness to a marriage to a person, and I knew of the baptism of the Holy Spirit, but I had never considered a "baptism into salvation," yet this rings true.
One thing that comes to mind is: How did this woman escape from the hospital where they were holding her if she were lying about getting some help from God? No one to date has put forth evidence that she was lying about how tight the security was at the Texas mental hospital.
Yes, Dr. Petti Wagner, herself a psychiatrist, is being held in a mental facility, but after reading this book , I do not think she was crazy at all. (She included photos, documents, and many details. One photo is of her with the former President, George H.W. Bush, Sr., back in 1971 and before he served as VP under Reagan. Both Bush and Dr. Wagner are from Texas.)
Besides being a successful, well-educated business woman, she is a believable witness.
Dr. Wagner claims that God the Father, Jesus, and The Holy Spirit all three appear to her to help her deal with her illegal imprisonment.
I have been reluctant to even write an Amazon books review on this book, because I did not feel I could do justice to this great book, like I did on the other (better) reviews I wrote, but I feel an obligation to testify to others who might buy this book: It is only one of three books of this nature I consider a "classic": The other two are "Angels on Assignment" by Roland H. Buck, as told to Charles and Frances Hunter -and "The Beautiful Side of Evil" by Johanna Michaelson and forwarded by Hal Lindsay.
Before anyone gets turned off by any negative name recognition by Hal Lindsay, let me point out that Michaelson's book, like Wagner's and Buck's, has solid Biblical support. (Michaelson, who was visited by demons, posing as holy angels, gives five Biblical methods to "try the spirits" to see an angel (or a so-called "prophet") really is from God: 1. Does the angel's specific testimony acknowledge Jesus as Lord? 2. If it's a person, is the general testimony of their life one of righteousness? 3. Did the specific prophecy come to pass? 4. Is the general prophecy a method permitted by God, that is, did the "prophet" use a forbidden witchcraft method to call up the spirit, or did it appear in one of the permitted ways, such as a vision? 5. Is there a testimony of the Holy Spirit, a gut feeling, so to speak? And, Rev. Buck, who claims he was visited by angels of God, makes two predictions that come true: Right before he died in 1979, Buck predicted the pope just elected would be very influential, and this has come true; He also rightly predicted concerning the message he himself was given about the angels being made worldwide.)
Wagner tells (on page 83) that God asked her to forgive a man who had just died and was on his way to Hell. She asked God what good that would do him, where he was going. God told her that it was necessary for her to prevent bitterness from taking root in her heart. That hearkens to Mark 11:25, which says to simply forgive, when praying, not merely as you want to be forgiven, but simply forgive -probably one of the hardest scriptures to follow, but one that brings healing and peace.
Well, I can't do justice to this book, but I do highly recommend it.
After all these yeares.......2003-10-01
Many years ago - probably around 15 or so, I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Wagner tell her story in person. I was only a young teenager or so at the time. I don't even remember if I read the book before or after seeing her, but I do remember that ever since then, I have never forgotten this magnificient woman's story.
I wouldn't hesitate getting this book for friends or family members as a gift - some might consider it unusual or inappropriate, but it might just change someone's life!
God is amazing!.......2001-05-15
I just read the Chinese version, and I just spent about 3 and a half hours to finish this book in the midnight. I just don't want to go to sleep before finish it, it is such a great testimoney!
Why Doesn't This Book Have More Exposure.......2001-05-04
Okay. This book by Petti Wagner is what the hottest fiction is made of. The intrigue, action and wacko plot is just what people clamor for.
After all, I have yet to read a fiction or sci fi story about a very wealthy woman who is an heiress to a fortune of a company that is a household name.
A story about this heiress arising to greatness and accomplishment that most of us only dream of.
A story about this heiress with numerous inventions and successful businesses to her credit with everything going her way.
Until some of her employees decide to take it for themselves.
So they torture and murder her.
But what they did not expect is that she comes back from the dead to bring restitution on them!!!!!
Have YOU ever read a fiction book like that?
Well, if you read this one, you still will not have. You see, this book is TRUE!!!!!
We have friends that know the pastor that wrote the forward of this book in Texas. He has since passed away- John Osteen- but if he endorsed this book, it is genuine and true.
I first heard Petti's story in a radio interview and was laughing so hard at the wacky details that I just HAD to get the book. Such a crazy story HAD to be true. Not even the greatest fiction writers have created such a fascinating and interesting story.
Get this book and read it. You will want to read it again. It is just too amazing to put down. It is an easy book to read. Lots of action and keeps your attention. ....
This book should be on the best sellers list. A story like this DESERVES recognition.
