Ruby Capote, the narrator of Girls' Poker Night, is your quintessential New York cynic. This persona serves her just fine in her job as a humor columnist; she's unafraid to write the most humiliating details about herself or her friends, because she truly doesn't care. But over the course of a year or so of Wednesday night poker parties with her pals, Ruby is forced to face her past--especially her sorrow over her father, who committed suicide after he left Ruby's mother. Meanwhile, Ruby comes to terms with her budding feelings for Michael, the editor of her newspaper, who, in a neat twist, turns out to be estranged from his only child (shades of Ruby's lost father). Davis, a former writer for The Late Show, does a fine job of maintaining Ruby's sharp humor while leading her through a minefield of emotional discovery. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
Dissatisfied both with writing a “Single Girl on the Edge/ Ledge/Verge” lifestyle column and with her boyfriend (who has a name for his car and compulsively collects plastic bread ties), Ruby Capote sends her best columns and a six-pack of beer to the editor of The New York News and lands herself a new job in a new city.
In New York, Ruby undertakes the venerable tradition of Poker Night—a way (as men have always known) to eat, drink, smoke, analyze, interrupt one another, share stories, and, most of all, raise the stakes. There’s Skorka, model by profession, homewrecker by vocation; Jenn, willing to cross county lines for true love; Danielle, recently divorced, seducer of at least one father/son combo in her quest to make up for perceived “missed opportunities.”
When Ruby falls for her boss, Michael, all bets are off. He’s a challenge. He’s her editor. And he wants her to stop being quippy and clever and become the writer—and the woman—he knows she can be. Adding to Ruby’s uncertainty is his amazing yet ambiguous kiss in the elevator, and the enjoyably torturous impasse of he-loves-me, he-loves-me-not.
What happens when you realize that Mr. Right has his own unresolved past? Where does that leave the future you envisioned? Ruby knows that happy endings aren’t for cowards, and she hasn’t lost hope that there are risks worth taking. As smart as it is laugh-out-loud funny,
Girls’ Poker Night is a twenty-first-century His Girl Friday and a re-freshingly upbeat look at friendship, work, and love.

"Jill Davis's Girls' Poker Night is every man's worst nightmare -- a candid look at how the other half thinks and feels. Ruby Capote is a smart, neurotic, maddening heroine against whom very few male poker players would stand a chance. I certainly hope this is fiction."
JAY McINERNEY, AUTHOR OF BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY AND MODEL BEHAVIOR

If I could give this less than one star, I would do it........2007-09-17
This book was HORRIBLE! 227 pages of a whining, disturbed, whining, misguided, whining, unsympathetic complainer for a main character, who subsequently is the ONLY character in the book who's given any "depth" at all. And did I mention that she whines?
What a waste of space!
OK, I get it - You have issues that stem from childhood and you run from relationships. Well kids, I just summed up the ONLY thread of what could be conceived as "plotline" in the entire novel. It was just awful! So awful, that I have absolutely no plotline to really pick apart in this review because the whole novel is bits and pieces thrown together in a hodge-podge that's MEANT to be a story.
It's ONLY saving grace is that it was a fairly quick read. So it's only 1 day of my life that I won't get back instead of more... Honestly, I'm SO ANGRY with myself for actually letting myself finish this thing, thinking, "Well, it's gotta get better, right?"
Take my word for it, kids - STAY AWAY! It's TRASH!!!
Disjointed Attempt at Chick Lit.......2006-10-22
Ruby lands a job in New York to escape a blah relationship in Boston. Her relationships and insecurities provide fodder for her column, "Single Girl on the Edge/Ledge/Verge." Her attraction to the editor and her poker nights with her girlfriends set up some funny scenes.
The book reads like a series of columns scotch taped together. Maybe that's the intent, but it just feels choppy. The women friends are mere caricatures and Ruby is frustratingly inept in pursuing her romantic interest.
Boring.......2006-09-05
Boring, meandering story line and under developed characters. I did not find this book funny but instead just found it tedious. There were too many characters for the story line and none of them were interesting or had any depth. I found myself losing tack of who was who among the supporting characters, and I never get a real sense of who the main character was.
Definately a Royal Flush!.......2006-07-19
I loved this book. It is a laugh out loud you have to share with the girls book. I have passed it around to any friend that enjoys a good read. It is an easy quick read! You will want to read it over and over
Sharp Wit and Believable Characters.......2006-04-18
In Girl's Poker Night, heroine Ruby Capote is a single girl who just can't be serious about anything... her job, her boyfriend, her past. She writes for a gossip column in which she dishes unselfconciously about herself and her friends, and yet when asked a direct question about herself she can't seem to find an answer. Author Jill Davis did a good job of making Capote like you and me, a girl just trying to get ahead in the world. She does this with a unique quick witted writing style in short little chapters that will lure you into reading more.

Book Description
Award-winning author Geralyn Dawson whips her winning blend of humor and spice into laugh-out-loud love stories her readers adore. Now she follows her delightful Simmer All Night with a tale that heats up the Scottish Highlands.
SHE NEEDS A GHOST, NOT A GROOM...
Of all the castles in all of Scotland, it's Gillian Ross' bad luck to live in one that isn't haunted. The ancestral home must be sold, but the single interested buyer requires a wraith in the rafters. With her family in danger, Gillian will do anything to protect them, so she dons a disguise and sets out to haunt her home herself. Her plan might have worked, had her first tantalizing target not revealed more than she bargained for.?
HE'D RATHER BE DEAD THAN WED.
Handsome as the devil but with a scoundrel's heart, Jake Delaney has come to Rowanclere Castle to locate a missing historical treasure, not find a wife. When a gorgeous "ghost" visits his bedchamber, his curiosity -- among other things -- is aroused. Unaware that his probing might lead to both mayhem and marriage, he vows to discover her secrets before leaving the Highlands. His plan might have worked, too, had he not been haunted by visions of a seductive Scottish sprite and the dream that a man's castle could somehow become his home.

A Fun Romp from the Mistress of Romantic Humor.......2001-07-22
As a fan of the romance mass market industry one the reasons it is so popular is the vast variety in sub-genres; there is something for everyone and almost every month. As both reader and reviewer I enjoy mostly Historicals set in Scotland or with a Scottish hero/heroine. However, not a great fan of Americana historical books, I especially shy away from any book with a Texas setting or hero; over the top seems to be the accepted norm. Well you can imagine my delight/dismay to find both in Geralyn Dawson's exceptional new romp, SIZZLE ALL DAY. Never one to back away from a challenge I plunged into this sequel to SIMMER ALL NIGHT and I am so very glad I did.
Jake Delaney wants his own life. His sister is married to his best friend and when he has found one of the few remaining copies of the Texas Declaration of Independence, his life will at last be his own. He wants to travel and experience all the world has to offer a carefree single man. His mother's trip to England, her place of birth, has afforded him the opportunity to do just this when it is rumored a copy of this document is to be found in Scotland. Escaping to Scotland has an added benefit: a chance to escape his mother's constant attempt at matchmaking. His only companion in the wilds of Scotland is the wee pup affectionately named, Scooter, who has lost the use of it's hind legs.
Gillian Ross and her family at Rowanclere Castle in Scotland are struggling to find a way out of their financial woes. It is Gillian's responsibility now that her one love affair has gone sour, her twin sister is married and very pregnant, a younger sister and an aging uncle depend on her for care. Much to her regret it seems only sensible to sell the castle, the only stable home since her parents death. The problem is the only one perspective buyer desires the castle but only if comes with it's own resident ghost. Much to her dismay it seems theirs is surely the only one in Scotland that doesn't have one. So what is lass to do: create one with results sure to have the reader in stitches.
Jake arrives at Rowanclere Castle under the false pretense of doing research. Through this research he plans to get the document and be on his way. However, his arrival seems the perfect opportunity for Gillian to set her ghostly plan into motion. As luck would have it, certainly the special kind of luck brilliantly created by Ms Dawson, both Jake and Gillian have the tables turned on them with delightfully humorous and intensely sensual results. But all these antics take on a curious twist when Jake's mother turns up at the castle as the special friend of the expected buyer. Each is disturbed by the outcome of this arrival with results that will test them to the limit much to the delight of the reader.
There will be much laughter for the reader in this tale but even more poignant scenes sure to bring on the reader's tears, so have the tissues ready. What works so well for this delightful romp is the strong sense of duty both Jake and Gillian have to others at the risk of their own desires. This is made possible by the excellent care with which Ms Dawson has researched and developed the plot: she blends the brashness of a Texan with the age old steadfast stubbornness of a Scottish lass effortlessly. Add this to the incredibly sensual stirrings each feels for the other as they struggle to find a way to have what is their heart's desire. One can only wonder what their offspring might be like.
As this very special journey moves toward its climax one gets a strong yet unexpected sense of a "Gift of the Magi" scenario unfolding as Gillian and Jake each tries to give the other their heart's desire even when it means their own will be devastated by the loss. Ms Dawson, a seasoned storyteller, knows readers expect a "happily ever after", but she makes both her couple and ultimately the reader work for it. Being in touch with reader's expectations is what sets a Geralyn Dawson romance apart. Ultimately because of these unique talents, she is able to provide a tale so overwhelmingly special it will be found on many of this year's "best of " lists.
SIZZLE ALL DAY is sure to charm readers as the mists of the Scotland are bewitchingly pierced by the twang of a most seductive Texan. However, run don't walk to your book seller because SIZZLE ALL DAY along with SIMMER ALL NIGHT are sure to fly off the shelves and you don't want to be left without your copy when the dust clears.

High Spirited.......2001-03-16
Sizzle All Day, the continuation of characters introduced in Simmer All Night, is a laugh-out-loud romance that combines the heart of Texas with the magic of Scotland.
Jake Delaney is continuing the hunt for the missing copies of the Texas Declaration of Independence. When the search leads the Texan into a cold Scottish summer, Jake is only too happy to escape the heat of his mother's insistence he find a bride. Now that his sister has married and his mother is safely tucked away into English society, Jake is determined to avoid the alter and travel the world. What the Texas lawyer didn't plan on was the interference of brownies, faeries, and goblins.
Gillian Ross is determined to care for her mischievous little sister and her bristling great uncle now that her twin is happily married and very pregnant. To sell the castle and help her loved ones, Gillian sets out to practice haunting the castle. She believes the visiting Texan could provide an excellent, albeit unknowing, audience for her dress rehearsal until her celestial debut exposes a little more than the castle's ample history.
Geralyn Dawson creates a light, charming banter between the characters. The dialogue is a musical combination of a melodious brogue and a slow, southern drawl. The refreshing presence of characters who are willing to laugh at themselves ease the reader into laughter and enjoyment of the creative passion shared between them.
Although Sizzle All Day lacks the suspense and intrigue used throughout Simmer All Night, its originality helps to better express the difference between the siblings, and compliments Dawson's ability to refrain from using formulas. I'd love to read another book explaining what happened to Gillian's brother. I'd also adore meeting the matches Dawson could create for Robbie and for Gillian's great uncle.
Sizzle All Day is a must read for anyone looking for a high spirited read and a memorable culture clash.
The characers are fun and they stay with you..........2000-12-10
This clever story had a really appealing hero and heroin -- the hero being especially charming. It had the kind of characters who linger in your mind for a few days after you finish the book. There were plenty of witty moments, I did laugh out loud once or twice, and although it wasn't the steamiest romance that I've read, it did have some sexy scenes that were well done. The 'Texas meets Scotland' thing kept the story really playful. Mostly, I loved the 'love story' in this book.
Laughing out loud!.......2000-09-16
I love a good book where you laugh out loud as you read it. If you do too, I can definitely recommend Sizzle all Day. Ms. Dawson has a sense of humor and it is apparent in all of her works. Jake is all male and it is interesting to read a book with insight into the male character. Despite my enjoyment of the book I'll only give it 4 stars because of the amount of convincing these two lovers had to do before the inevitable happy ending.
Love the author, but this book not for me.......2000-09-12
If you have read any of my other book reviews, you will know what I expect in a book. I have purchased every book that Geralyn Dawson has written , and have enjoyed her writing and have kept all of her books in my collection for future reading. Four books arrived today from Amazon and Sizzle All Day was my first choice to read. I got through 151 pages and I had had enough! Some people will enjoy it and they will love it, but not me. I love humor, but to me this was redicules. I cannot conceive people in the late 1883 acting quite this silly. The only thing I know from the pages that I was able to read is the author did do her research to teach the readers some of the Scottish phrases and vocabulary and of course we know that she already knows texas phrases so that came naturally . Give us some credit, When Texas meets Scotland there surely is a better story to be written. I know the characters had possibilities. I cheated and went to the back and still will not go to the middle. After this book, I went back and checked the book Simmer All Night and then it finally hit me , I had forgotten what that was about because I did not like it, and it left my mind. We all will have different opionions and I hope that the readers will respect my right to give this book a two star. After you have been reading romance novels as many years as I have, you get a little PICKY.Remember if we all agree then there is never room for improvement. Enjoy reading forever, Marylin Graham

Book Description
A determined group of colonists are attempting to establish a bridgehead on the planet Pandora, despite the savagery of the native lifeforms, as deadly as they are inhospitable. But they have more to deal with than just murderous aliens: their ship's computer has been given artificial consciousness and has decided that it is a God. Now it is insisting - with all the not inconsiderable force of its impressive array of armaments to back it up - that the colonists find appropriate ways to worship It .

Scales were never balanced.......2006-07-21
i couldn't help but feel sorry for the obvious villains of this work.ever since introducing them to the scene they never seemed to pose any sort of threat to the kind of god-like powers Herbert always instills to his good guys.much like in the Dune series where the omnipotent kwisatz haderach foils any atttempts at his downfall the kelp-hugging poet and his hippie-esque eco-renegades are always
saved by the deus-ex machima that is the writers quill.
i thought that the characters were wonderfully defined as opposed to another reviewer they just simply lacked the true tools of power
to truly tip the scales.all in all once again herbert almost annoyingly has his villains plot and scheme to no avail and the good guys live happily ever after.
Love it!.......2006-04-19
Just wanted to add my 2 cents - I think Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom did a fantastic job on this book. The Jesus Incident is my favorite. There are many different issues in the book including environmental issues and moral/ethical issues to name just a couple. Are clones "human"? Are "humans" better than clones? Do clones have "human" rights? How do you define intelligence? Is it possible for what appears to be ocean plant life to be intelligent? The authors entwine all these issues, including the question of whether or not Ship is God, into a wonderful sci-fi world and a great story. Wish they'd make a movie out of this one!
More gas than a hylighter.......2005-12-28
This is an extremely dull book. I found myself falling asleep consistently when reading the first 100 pages. I even started the book over to ensure that I "got it". What I "got" was a book that foundered more or less completely. This is the least focused Herbert book I have ever read. Maybe we can blame it on Bill Ransom.
Second book in the Pandora series (1st book is Destination: Void), characters living on Ship, Colony and Redoubt on Pandora.
Morgan Oakes, Chaplain/Psychiatrist, in charge. Second in command Jesus Lewis, living on the Pandoran surface. Trying to destroy the electrokelp and hylighters, seemingly sentient inhabitants of Pandora. Ship brings Raja Flattery out of hibernation and assigns poet Kerro Panille to groundside. Raja changes last name to Thomas. They, along with Waela TaoLini, will conduct a new round of interaction with the kelp/electrokelp. They do so and are rescued by the hylighters. Kerro establishes close communication with the hylighters, learning in the process that the electrokelp and the hylighters are the same consciousness, also known as the Avata.
Thomas is prompted by Ship to engage Pandorans to figure out the correct way to "WorShip". This was the original charge from a newly conscious Ship in Destination: Void, that humans learn how to properly WorShip. Ship states that it will destroy humanity if this task is not completed quickly.
Colony is destroyed - how is never explained as far as I can tell. Redoubt is destroyed. Ship leaves, taking Lewis and Oakes. Apparently, the proper way to WorShip, to "find our own humanity and live up to it" (p. 412), is uncovered in time to stop the destruction of humanity.
Throw in there a time traveling expedition by Hali Ekel to Golgotha to see the crucifixion of Jesus. Why? To understand "holy violence". Okay, but why?
Avata, a female child, is born from the coupling of Waela and Kerro. Purpose? To give "them [Pandora's inhabitants] the new worship and weaving them into a single organism." Do what?
I was fairly excited about the interactions with the kelp, as the communication between two different sentient groups (kelp and humans) is pretty meaty science fiction fare. This interaction was pretty sketchy, though. The interaction did produce Kerro's bridging communication with the hylighters/kelp/Avata. I'm still not sure what all this is supposed to mean.
The characters in this book were just uninteresting. Oakes, Lewis, Ferry and Murdoch, collectively the "bad" guys, were flat, flat, flat. Kerro Panille, the poet with the ability to communicate directly with Ship (a rare ability), was cloaked in so much fluffy nonsense that I'm still not sure what all happened with him.
On Herbert's trademark quotations that start each new chapter, I am usually a fan, but I stopped reading them in this book because they were inane.
The book just spent too long to portray too little. Pretty simple actually.
This isn't the greatest review (pretty sketchy), but it covers the main highlights of the book. My advice, if you are interested in the Pandora series (which I still am even after this book), is to read this review and move on to the next book, The Lazarus Effect.
a very dark story... great book.......2004-11-07
Any fan of the original Dune chapters should definitely check out this book. Herbert had such an excellent ability for crafting alien worlds... complete with mysterious yet realistic-seeming lifeforms and ecosystem. This is beyond just a Sci-Fi book tho... as with Dune, Herbert does an amazing job of dealing with human nature, the fear of the unknown, and of course, religion.
Unfortunately, I personally feel that the sequels to this book taper off in terms of quality.
The Jesus Incident.......2004-08-24
Not a review, just a notice that BILL RANSOM was the co-author with Frank Herbert on this book and the whole series. Amazon left my name off this display.

Book Description
This book is a fictionalized treatment of the Gospel. A well-preserved manuscript is discovered, dating from the late first century A.D. It is written in the common Greek language of the eastern Roman provinces and purports to be an account of the life and acts of one Jeshua, written by a Roman centurion whose servant he had healed. This Jeshua was an itinerant Jewish preacher from the time of the Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. After introductory statements by the archeologist, by a friend to whom he had entrusted the manuscript and by an expert on ancient manuscripts, there follows the legionary's own preface. He gives a brief biography of himself and his family origins at Rome and his career as a soldier, first in Gaul and then in Syria and Palenstine as an officer of the X Legion, Fretensis.
What follows is a synthesis of the four canonical gospels, combined into a single narrative, interspersed with copious questioning, analysis and commentary by the ancient writer. Deeply impressed by the healing of a beloved young servant, after retiring with the rank of military tribune he devoted the rest of his life to interviewing those who had known Jeshua and gathering their written accounts of this life and mission. His Roman viewpoint and military experience are antithetical to Jeshua's teaching, yet he has an undeniable attraction to that teaching. The beloved servant, once a slave, has been manumitted and serves as an amanuensis to the writer. Their joint effort has produced thje manuscript in question.
In the end the legionary admits the power and cogency of Jeshua's message and reluctantly accepts its meaning for himself. His servant, Demetrios, ends the manuscript with his own confession of belief, for, as he says, he had no doubt about Jeshua ever since the day he was healed of a virulent fever at the age of 14.

Christian Witnessing in the Midst of Religious Pluralism.......2001-03-20
In the midsts of religous pluralism today, how should one speaks about what one believes? Can we show tolerance with others while keeping what we believe? Calvin Shenk integrates love, respect and understanding of other religions in the way Christians should witness among them. This book is in my list of the best book for witnessing. It's faith affirming and love encouraging.

Customer Reviews:
No fiction writer could create such a compelling story.......2007-07-01
The American body politic cuts the president a great deal of error slack. We witnessed that during the Watergate years of Richard Nixon and we see it again in the presidency of George W. Bush. Both instances also point out one major fact of the American political landscape. No matter what they achieve or how high their popularity, if a President does the wrong things, they can crash down with great force.
This book is one of the greatest political chronicles of all time. So great that no fiction writer could possibly create a story with such dynamism, force and sheer magnitude. Woodward and Bernstein were the reporting team that kept the Watergate story alive and ultimately led to Nixon's resignation. In this book, they describe the final days of the Nixon presidency and how the people involved tried to salvage what value they could and move on to the next phase.
The greatest message of the book is the demonstration of how powerful and resilient the American political system is. Despite the slow pace of discovery, tortuous maneuvers by the prosecution and countermoves by the Nixon defense team, the system worked and worked well. The highest government official in the United States was a party to criminal acts and was removed without a shot being fired. There are few countries in the world where that could have taken place. It is one more demonstration of how extraordinary the writers of the American constitution were. Despite all of the changes in how the world works, advances in technology and other marvels of the age, a system put in place nearly two hundred years earlier functioned to near perfection.
Highly recommended.......2007-05-02
This is a fascinating book regardless of your political persuasion or feelings about Richard Nixon. The detailed account of the last days of the administration reveals the human side of the names and faces you saw on the news everyday back then or read about in other books since then.
Solid, Readable Narrative.......2007-01-01
This gripping narrative takes us inside the White House during the last days of the Nixon administration in 1974. From inside we see President Nixon, his advisors, family, and congressional allies trying to stave off his inevitable downfall from the Watergate scandal. Readers see how Nixon tried to claim executive privilege to avoid releasing the "smoking gun" tape that proved he'd ordered the cover-up. Even after he surrendered the tape (by Supreme Court order) Nixon refused to resign until his fast-deserting congressional allies warned him that his impeachment and conviction were now certain. The authors credit General Alexander Haig for holding the White House together as Nixon unraveled, but pay less attention to Vice President Gerald Ford, a non-participant except for later when he gave Nixon a questionable full pardon. There's also a review of the two-year scandal and the President's adversaries (Leon Jaworski, Sam Ervin, John Dean, etc.) but this narrative is based inside the White House. Readers see that Nixon was very capable but also a lying, crooked tax cheat, one whose administration was awash in payoffs, hush money, bribes, and political espionage.
Authors Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein first uncovered the Watergate Scandal as reporters for the Washington Post in June of 1972. Having begun Nixon's downfall, perhaps it's fitting that they should chronicle that descent with this superb narrative, plus their earlier effort ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN.
Outstanding!.......2006-04-29
I was absorbed by this book. It's story is so compelling and amazing, I couldn't put it down. I also appreciate the writing style that made difficult content easier to understand and follow. I consider this one of the best books I have ever read and an incredible insight into the Nixon mind.
The Final Days.......2006-02-23
a good historical review of Nixon. Especially how tape crazy he was. A little tough reading in few pages but picks up after a while. It should be required reading for college to show what cn really happen in the White House.
