Book Description
Not so long ago, people thought attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder was a condition that only affected children-- whirling dervishes who careened through life leaving a path of destruction in their wake. We now know, however, that there is a sizeable group of quiet daydreamers whose inability to organize themselves and focus on the task at hand makes it impossible for them to meet the demands of everyday life. And we know that many children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults. But this increased knowledge has sometimes contributed more confusion than clarification.
In Daredevils and Daydreamers, Ingersoll--one of the foremost clinicians and researchers in the field--looks at what we've learned in a decade. From obtaining a good diagnosis through the most recent, cutting edge medical and psychological solutions offered, Ingersoll's examples and research have an immediacy missing from the other books in the field. In addition, she tackles a number of peripheral issues other books ignore such as the problem of the ADHD child in adoptive families, divorced families and step-families, and she handles "real-world" issues (like soiling and bed-wetting) that others disregard.

daredevils and daydreamers.......2000-01-02
As grandparents that did not know the first thing about ADD, this book has helped us to understand our Grandson and also helped us to understand what our daughter as a single parent has been going through for the last 5 years. The chapter on what the School Systems SHOULD do was very inlightning. We now have a guide to use in talking to Doctors,Teachers and other family members.
Great Insights!!.......1999-01-22
I really enjoyed Dr. Ingersoll's book. As an educator who worked primarily in Spec. Ed and encountered ADHD/ADD kids in the regular and special ed classroom settings and a parent of an 11 yr. old with ADD, I particularly appreciated her expanding the very clinical statements of the DSM-IV into very human recognizable examples. As a professional educator and a parent this book worked for me; it was interesting to look at how much our knowledge of ADD and related disorders has grown over the past decade.
Excellent.......1998-06-01
Whether this is the first book you will read on ADHD or the hundredth, you will want to own this book. It is an excellent resource you will want to refer to often and share with others. What I like about all of Dr. Ingersoll's books is that they are so easy and enjoyable to read, yet so jam-packed with valuable information.
This comprehensive work includes information from her other books, yet is in no way a "rewrite." It contains almost 200 citations of cutting-edge research -- many of which I have circled for future reading.
Each chapter begins with a "Then and Now" section to show how far we have come in our understanding of ADHD in the past decade and where we are headed. The book defines ADHD and related learning, emotional and behavioral disorders which so often coexist with it, and discusses how to obtain a comprehensive evaluation. The chapter devoted to medical management makes it clear that medication is recognized as the first line of treatment, and often the only intervention necessary to treat individuals afflicted with ADHD. But, since many people require a multimodal treatment, Dr. Ingersoll also provides a comprehensive discussion of psychotherapy and training approaches, and the treatment of associated problems such as lying, stealing, social interactions, etc. I especially liked her chapters "Bless this House: Holding it Together on the Homefront" and "School Days, School Daze." While the book is geared toward helping children, it presents a wealth of valuable information for adults with ADHD as well.

Book Description
From the inexhaustible imagination of Ian McEwan--a master of contemporary fiction and author of the Booker Prize-winning national bestseller
Amsterdam--an enchanting work of fiction that appeals equally to children and adults.
First published in England as a children's book,
The Daydreamer marks a delightful foray by one of our greatest novelists into a new fictional domain. In these seven exquisitely interlinked episodes, the grown-up protagonist Peter Fortune reveals the secret journeys, metamorphoses, and adventures of his childhood. Living somewhere between dream and reality, Peter experiences fantastical transformations: he swaps bodies with the wise old family cat; exchanges existences with a cranky infant; encounters a very bad doll who has come to life and is out for revenge; and rummages through a kitchen drawer filled with useless objects to discover some not-so-useless cream that actually makes people vanish. Finally, he wakes up as an eleven-year-old inside a grown-up body and embarks on the truly fantastic adventure of falling in love. Moving, dreamlike, and extraordinary,
The Daydreamer marks yet another imaginative departure for Ian McEwan, and one that adds new breadth to his body of work.

Never dream too much . . . or too little.......2007-05-26
This is a light-hearted set of linked stories about a boy, Peter, between the ages of ten and twelve, who is a chronic daydreamer. Sometimes, this results in big problems, and sometimes it results in . . . knowledge and understanding.
First, we meet Peter, his mother, his father, his sister Kate, and the cat, William. Peter tries to be grown-up and do things the right way, but then he drifts off, and his imagination takes over. One of the early day-dreams involves a nightmarish sequence that approaches that series of horror films with the demon-doll, Chuckie, where one of Kate's least-favorite dolls leads an ambush of Peter.
The next one is the best daydream, in my opinion. Peter and his beloved, aging cat, William, share an interesting experience (at least in Peter's mind), with a beautifully bittersweet result. While sad, the adventure also holds a streak of nobility and mercy.
Peter then uses his daydreaming to understand, and seek a truce, with a bully; tries to figure out his infant nephew; devises a clever plan to catch a local burglar (well, maybe); and finally takes a first, tentative step toward understanding love and the social interactions of grown-ups.
My take: At first glance, I wondered if this were a children's book, and it could be used that way. I can imagine parents, or grandparents or aunts or uncles, reading this book along with children, ages four through ten, but I think it is mainly to help remind adults of the power of imagination, including the potential for growth and for damage. I heard a saying once: "Don't be afraid to build castles in the air, as long you're also willing to put good foundations under them." I think that is what this book is about, or what it said to me, at least: Never fear to dream, but make sure you also keep track of reality. Without toil, we accomplish nothing; without dreams, we only toil meaninglessly.
This book is only 135 pages, and the margins are not small, nor is the font. I did not do a word-count, but it is likely a novella, not a novel. It reads more like a fictional memoir than a single tale.
This is probably ideal reading for sitting on the beach, or for sitting on a plane while trying to get to a beach. It would also make a nice gift.
explanation?.......2005-07-20
Okay, firstly The Daydreamer gets 1 star because what the hell was it going on about? Was Peter Fortune daydreaming or not half the time, and how come some people knew about it? I know some books leave things to the imagination, but this book is just ridiculous! There is no paricular story to it, and what is the real purpose? Throughout the book, what is Peter realizing from his daydreams. That he is finally growimg up, what it's like to be somebody else? I just don't get this book, and, okay, that might make me seem stupid, but I'm not, just disappoitned with the quality of The Daydreamer. It has quite an interesting story, but it wasn't written very well. Ian Mcewan could have been more inventive with his characters.

This book is about a a boy who daydreams. Each chapter tell a story/daydream about the boy dreams. it is full of new and differetn storys. i think there is a hidden meaning but yet i have nto found it (sorry)

The day dreamer by Ian McEwan.......2005-07-20
This book was ...well ... should i say interesting.I didnt think that it had a particulalary interesting plot and after all the day dreaming it didnt lead to anything ??no exciting ending ??or thrilling cliff hanger ?? I dont think this book related to anything that peple our age are interested in and the language used was far too complicated for people younger than 12 to understand. As there are many twists aswell. Im sure that you could be a great writter only i didnt enjoy it sorry

Before reading this book i expected it to be original and full of character, i formed these opinions due to the front cover and the books title. How wrong could i be. Yes it is certainly original, but the content remains immature. The author has taken a different approach to this novel, he has choosen to write it in a very unique way but hasnt excelled in this. The idea and perphaps content could work but the style it is writen in is poor. The book has proven to be simple yet with a complex twist, however the way this is portrayed has made the content boring and

Beautiful illustrations, beautiful story........2006-04-29
If for some reason I had to part with all but ten of my hundreds of books, this would be one of the ten that I would choose to keep. Guy Billout is an artist. He clearly utilizes both hemispheres with ease. If you live in your left brain, and try to "read" this book with an engineer's or accountant's brain you will probably miss the point. It's unfortunate that stores that happen to have this gem in stock often file it in the children's or juvenile section. Although suitable (and even delightful) for kids, I believe that those people with more miles behind than ahead will be more likely to understand the story and be taken by it.

JUST COULDN'T MAKE IT HAPPEN!.......2006-05-02
Gorgeous, sexy men - if a bit of a tom cat attitude to sex.
Finally a virgin - at least in her mind if not in her actions.
Story plot just does not hold up. Too much mind blowing fantasies without much reality.
Ah well, this is Temptation - not enough meat to the plot - too much marshamallowism.
I liked the character portrayals but no enough about their jobs that make them who they are.
Sassy, Sexy, Seductive! That just about sums it up. Not much else.
Josh Marshall, 27 and has had tooo many women - wouldn't want an over used character. Amanda Barker, 24 - too forward for a virgin. Not enough real shyness [innocense]to be realistic.
Her fund-raising hunky calendars have caught on. Must applaud Josh's reluctance but hey? Nope, their attitudes just don't make it happen.
Nice to find out what happened to the characters of Mick, Zack and Josh. But really didn't miss much.
OK to read but ------
Perfect Ending.......2005-07-31
This is a perfect ending to a four book series. Wonderful job Ms Foster.
I Loved it........2004-08-18
I just loved the change in Josh from the previous 2 books (Caught in the act & Treat her right). Amanda is a very scarred young woman who cannot get involved with any man. That is until she meets Josh. In the previous books Josh justs loves women & lots of them. When he finds out the reason of Amanda's trauma he becomes one of the most wonderful, caring man she has ever known. It is a very moving story & one I will always remember. I do hope this is not the end of Mick, Del, Zach, Wynn, Danni, Josh & Amanda in future books. I just love all the charachters.
Good, but i wouldnt rush to get it........2003-03-14
The book was fairly good. The humor in it was very "Fosteresque", which is a good thing in case you haven't read anythign from Lori Foster. However, I found that i enjoyed Treat Her Right much better than Mr. November. Josh is a very likable character, Amanda, on the other hand, isn't. I'm not saying she's a bad character, she isn't, she's rather sweet and i would dare to say that some of you would even indentify with her, to a certain extent, but i found that after viewing Del (Caught in the Act) and Wynn (Treat Her Right), as 2 very independent, sexy, caring and strong women, seeing Amanda was a dissapointment. But she is not as bad as she could have been. The story is nice, but its nothing from the other world. I say it could have been better, but then again I'm a very difficult audience. I recomend it, if you have nothing else to do, or not another book to read.
Touching and sexy!!.......2002-03-05
Firefighter Josh Marshall wants Amanda Barker! And she wants him--to pose for her calendar. When they get together to talk it over, Josh sees beyond Amanda's cool, uninvolved exterior. He knows that she is emotionally scarred from something in her past and that she is fighting her feelings for him because she thinks she doesn't deserve anything good in her life.
Josh's heart breaks every time her pain surfaces and once he realizes he loves her he accepts his fate & determines to make her happy.

Book Description
Ninety minutes, twice a day. Five days a week.
Car pool heaven turns into car pool hell when Anthea Rossignole realizes her lover is having an affair with the other woman sharing their daily commute. It seems that Anthea's successful career as a cost analyst at an oil refinery is the only thing she can really count on these days. Now she's looking for someone to share the long drive.
Shay Sumoto desperately needs a car pool. Though wildly overqualified, the environmental biologist takes a low-paying job testing well samples to keep body and soul together. The debt from her father's terminal illness and the loss of the company she and her father owned have left her with no money, no time and no sense of humor.
When Shay and Anthea begin carpooling together, they find that first impressions of each other don't bode well, and second impressions don't improve their chemistry much. But when Shay uncovers alarming test results in her work information that could cost both of them their jobs Anthea is the only person she trusts for advice. Can two very different women find common ground?
It's Never an Easy Commute on the Freeway of Love.

I Had Forgotten..........2007-06-12
...how enjoyable this book is until I picked it up and re-read it recently. I have always been a fan of Kallmaker's, and this particular novel ranks among those that I would pass along to my friends. (In fact, it's in a bag waiting to be picked up by a friend now.)
The characters were well developed and interesting, the plot was never tiresome, and the romance tugged at your heartstrings in all the right ways.
Wonderful story of real people facing real problems and overcoming them beautifully........2005-11-09
This novel was worth reading if only for the first chapter. By the end of the chapter you are totally invested in the two main characters and feel you want to meet them as real people. The scene where Anthea confronts Lois is simply and amazingly real. I really admire the characters and how they deal with the hardships and delights that life throws at them. It also has the best written gay males (friends of the two main characters) in any lesbian romance I have read.
I love how the characters confront a workplace bigot - it was really well written (I just wish I was there to see it and hope other authors include a dose of such realism when appropriate).
The love scenes are delectable and so well written you wish the novel was longer. They advance the story perfectly and illustrate the characters as dialogue never can. Liberally laced thoughout the novel is delightful humor. The scene illustrating the need for good kitchen hygiene will never be forgotten.
This novel is a keeper you will read again
I can't wait to read the short story sequel in the author's anthology 'Frosting On The Cake'
Some Topics Really Get Under My Skin..........2005-09-26
This book is riddled with racial slurs, sexism, and homophobia. These attitudes are not a reflection on Kallmaker, but are necessary to tell this compelling story of interracial lesbian love.
Anthea Rossignole works in the accounting department at an oil refinery. She comes from old money and is financially secure. However, she subjects herself daily to a sexist, condescending, homophobic boss who doesn't have a clue. The worst part is the entire company seems to be populated with men just like her boss. To top things off, Anthea's long-time live-in girlfriend has an affair with another woman in their car pool. Anthea breaks things off, kicks her lover out, and looks for a new car pool.
Shay Sumoto, an Asian-American who has just lost her father to lung cancer, has also lost her only source of income as a geologist and is knee deep in debt from his hospital bills. She goes against everything she believes in and takes a job working for the refinery. It is there that she meets the seemingly-pretentious Anthea.
After breaking through their barriers, these two women discover new love and begin to work through their painful pasts. In the meantime, Anthea helps Shay uncover and report illegal activities by their employer. They do this not out of revenge for their treatment, but because they want to do the right thing.
This book was first published in 1993. It amazes me that these attitudes still existed then. It amazes me even more that they still exist today - although they generally are hidden and denied in polite society. Read this book, get angry, fall in love with Shay and Anthea, become a bigger Kallmaker fan.
A romance on an oil refinery?.......2005-05-27
This is one of the last of Karin Kallmaker's early books that I've been longing to read, and finally it has been reprinted. I never thought I would find a story set in part on an oil refinery in any way absorbing, but as usual I went along for the ride in Car Pool and the journey was well worth all the shifts in speed along the way.
Anthea is wealthy but still working. Shay, on the other hand, like most of us, must work. She needs two jobs just to keep it together. Each of them treats the other like a stereotype, but that car pool means they slowly have to get to know more than what they see on the surface. That they are both lesbians comes as a surprise to each woman, because of the stereotypes they have been entertaining.
Once Anthea sees outside the closet, and once Shay gets over some of the bitterness of her father's death, they find life a whole lot easier, and enjoying each other's company more and more. Their two gay male friends provide a wonderful counterpoint to the slow pace Anthea and Shay take.
There is a mystery on the oil refinery - a setting that is wonderfully conveyed. I never want to see one for myself now! I like how the women work together to try to get all the dirt they can and how Shay is finally able to prove wrongdoing. The final work scene with Anthea and her racist, homophobic boss is incredibly SATISFYING.
Readers who are just now discovering this early work should treat themselves to the follow up story in Frosting on the Cake about Anthea and Shay, Harold and Adrian, trying to become a very modern 21st century family. It's hilarious *and* heartwarming.
My only regret in devouring this book the moment it arrived is that I am now have so few Karin Kallmaker books left to read!
A piece of my life.......2002-01-25
This book is the one that hooked me on Karin Kallmaker. It was as if she knew me, and created the character of Shay right out of my life. I've never met my Anthea, but I'm looking under every rock for her!

Good girls finish last...
That's Belinda Hennessey's new philosophy in life, work, and love after moving to Atlanta to escape a disastrous six-hour marriage. Now she has a killer job, spunky carpooling gal-pals, and the velvety voice of a traffic helicopter reporter to guide her on her way. She's even feeling lively enough to contribute to the manual on relationships and men her friends are writing to kill time during their commute.
But then a traffic mishap with a drop-dead gorgeous cop unleashes a series of events that bolsters Belinda's new bad-girl attitude -- she gets a tune-up from "Officer Goodbody," catches the eye of the throaty traffic reporter, and is targeted for a big promotion. But before Belinda can say "corner office," a coworker is murdered, and evidence points to a carpool conspiracy! With a killer on the loose, her friends at one another's throats, and two men offering southern comfort, Belinda knows only one thing for certain: climbing to the top can be murder on a girl.
Customer Reviews:
A Thrilling, Fun Romp.......2007-09-12
Stephanie Bond has a way of creating real, believable characters who are plunged into larger-than-life circumstances. Each character in the book has her (or his) own little mystery to unravel as the heroine races to identify - and avoid - a killer. A thrilling, fun and sweet read. Spicy, but not over-the-top with the sex.
What did Vince's card say???.......2006-02-07
After a 6 hour marriage, Belinda packs up and moves to Atlanta to start new. On the first day of her new carpool, she has a fender bender with a sexy cop. Then she has a steamy encounter with a local DJ, and the promise of a lucrative promotion from her conniving boss, Margo.
When Margo's body suddenly turns up in Belinda's trunk, she is soon is embroiled in a murder investigation along with her carpool buddies, who also have a motive for murdering the unlikable Margo, which puts a damper on the developing romance between her and sexy cop Wade.
Belinda is not sure who to trust; can one of her car pool buddies be a murderer? Or could it be the hot DJ, Julian?
Bond manages to take a romantic murder mystery and inject a lot of humor to keep the story light. Between her humiliation of being dumped during her wedding reception, to being the cause of morning traffic, to that horrible driver's license picture, Belinda is a believable heroine stuck in an unlikely situation. But I really wanted to know what Vince's card said.
Kill The Competition... Gotta Love It!!.......2005-10-20
This is the first, but not the last, Stephanie Bond novel I have read. This was witty, funny, sexy, and one heck of a good mystery. Belinda Hennessey is starting over in Atlanta. While car pooling with some friends from work she runs into a hunk of a policeman. The banter between the friends while car pooling is humorous. The people at Belinda's Company start dying, is there a serial killer on the loose? Belinda seems to just fall into one thing or another. Of course all the good looking, hot, hot guys have the hots of Belinda too. The book was easy, fun, sexy reading, the mystery will keep you guessing until the very end.
Good, light read!.......2005-08-14
I enjoyed this book a lot. It kept me interested and wanting to come back to finish it, to know how it ended. I liked the character of the cop. And I enjoyed all the girls in the car pool. Everyone was pretty 3-D. A good beach read! ENJOY!!
Stephanie Bond is great!.......2004-12-30
After a decade of reading Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown and Susan Elizabeth Philips, I was looking for a new author. I picked up a Stephanie Bond novel at a hotel book exchange and was hooked. She's a great writer! I have read three of her books so far and they are all witty, fun and well-written.

Mrs. Minetta's Car Pool.......2003-03-03
I can remember well 15 years ago when I received this book in second grade, and ever since it has been one of my favorites! How could any kid not love the idea of secretly skipping school and going on wonderful, and sometimes magical, adventures with a very unique old woman! Kind Mrs. Minetta was, "firm, but never cross," and was one who,"can not tell a lie," making her a seemingly perfect adult to drive a carload of young friends to school. But this special old woman and her big, black dog would teach the kids to blow red lights green, how to have lots of fun, and manage to get them excused from school, while still staying "truthful" about their lack in attendance on Fridays. Sadly, the trips to amusement parks, the beach, ski resorts, and an old ranch would come to an end when the parents discovered their children were missing Fridays in school. Sweet old Mrs. Minetta would not be allowed to take the kids out of school anymore, and so would end their great adventures. But Mrs. Minetta and her big, bright red convertable remained the best car pool driver the kids ever had. I love it!

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll read it again and again!.......2000-08-07
Nancy Moser's take on the life of the typical wife and mom is right on! She is the master of the clever turn of phrase and her insight into family relationships is keen. You'll take away incredible encouragment from this book but reading it feels like plain ol' fun! Lots of real-life examples, plenty of spiritual 'food'. Highly recommended.
Similar to Erma Bombeck with a spiritual point. Excellent!.......1998-05-10
Short, easy-to-read pieces that really hit home. I could relate. I liked the humor combined with the spiritual lesson. The people lived their faith in every day circumstances. It made me laugh and cry. Covered kids of all ages, relatives and a woman's personal spiritual walk.

A great introduction to Buddhism.......2007-06-08
Before reading this book, I have read his two other phenomenal books by His Holiness - The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living and The Art of Happiness at Work. These two books are very practical books with concepts that we can easily relate to and apply to our day to day lives. I read them in a time of sadness and confusion, and they have really helped to put me on the right track again.
The Essential Dalai Lama provided a great introduction of the essential Buddhist concepts to me. The books is actually a collection of chapters from various books by His Holiness. The pace is good for beginners and the ideas are presented in great clarity.
From my point of view, most of the teachings from His Holiness are actually religiously neutral. Many of the concepts are simply ancient wisdoms that have been passed through the experience of many generations. These wisdoms can serve as short-cuts to help all of us, regardless of religious and cultural background, to understand our mind better, to live happier and healthier, and to make this world a better place for our fellow human beings.
To summarize, I think this book could be a bit theoretical as the first introduction to Buddhism. It's easier to read the two books that I mentioned earlier or other books by Thich Nhat Hanh such as Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life. On the other hand, for someone who wants to learn the key buddhist concepts in a systematic way for the first time, the Essential Dalai Lama offers an excellent choice.
Broad Coverage.......2005-12-22
This is only the second book by the Dalai Lama that I've read, the first being The Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom. I didn't know alot about his teachings, and wanted to read something that he had authored (therefore, I chose not to read the popular "The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living," which he coauthored with another individual). It is quite broad in its coverage, including four parts entitled The Vision, Buddhist Perspectives, Practice, and A World in Harmony. While reading this book, I got the sense that it wasn't written "as a whole;" it can be a little disjointed (I think it's a compilation of his different speeches, writings, etc.). Also, if you're not knowledgeable about Buddhism (I'm not a Buddhist, but have read several books about this religion), some of it can be a little esoteric. Having said this, this book basically met my objectives (I especially enjoyed Parts One and Four). Without being an expert on the subject, it does seem to cover the "essential/important" teachings of this living spiritual leader.
