Book Description

In these fifteen short stories--her eighth collection of short stories in a long and distinguished career--Alice Munro conjures ordinary lives with an extraordinary vision, displaying the remarkable talent for which she is now widely celebrated. Set on farms, by river marshes, in the lonely towns and new suburbs of western Ontario, these tales are luminous acts of attention to those vivid moments when revelation emerges from the layers of experience that lie behind even the most everyday events and lives.

"Virtuosity, elemental command, incisive like a diamond, remarkable: all these descriptions fit Alice Munro."--Christian Science Monitor

"How does one know when one is in the grip of art--of a major talent?....It is art that speaks from the pages of Alice Munro's stories."--Wall Street Journal

5 out of 5 stars Unabashed joy for an unabashed fan!.......2007-03-05

If I could write a letter to Ms Munro, it would simply say...thank you for sharing your gift, and then probably, quit reading your fan mail and write some more short stories! Munro's gift is to make the simplest tale accessible to every reader, and whatever twists and turns she may take you on, your brain in sheer delight will exclaim..."of course!" She is capable of making the most isolated 1930's farm come alive to modern urban condo dwellers. Like a Rosetta stone of feeling and emotion, she allows the readers to inhabit the characters fully, regardless of gender or personality or circumstance. This collection is further evidence and testament to that gift, and of that genius. Write on, Ms Munro, write on!

5 out of 5 stars You're in Luck!.......2006-10-23

If you haven't read Alice Munro before, you're in luck! you have some ten volumes of the best writing in English to select from! This collection includes some of Munro's earliest stories, at least as early as 1968, and one of her best known, "The Red Dress". It's a good starting place. If you've already read Munro's later story-suites, such as Runaway, then you'll be intrigued to find a less distinctive but equally crafty word-artist in Happy Shades. The stories in this collection are less interpenetrating, less like a novel in the form of a suite, than in other collections, but that's not a flaw, just a difference. One story (I won't declare which) ranks in my mind as a classic equal to any in English. If a short-story writer is ever to win the Nobel Prize, in my opinion it should be Alice Munro.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate and Touching.......2001-01-26

I hadnt read much Alice Munro before but I was very impressed with this collection of stories. There's a wonderful understatement about the entire collection, but each story resonates with its own life and people. I loved the melancholy and moody landscapes, the other-worlds of women and children mainly on farms and villages.

I think good stories create their own unique life; after all, why else would we care about characters who we meet and get to know so briefly? But we DO care about the characters; somehow they matter and though nothing is resolved sometimes, somehow everything has changed. The ordinary transformed.

        Book Description

Female trickster figures have been a universal theme from Scheherazade to Mata Hari to the sirens of the silver screen. Mercury Rising examines our sense of of order and morality and considers it from a post-Jungian feminist perspective. Tricksters can teach us the nature of femininity and evil, and provide for us the spark that makes life more full and rewarding. This is destined to be a seminal book on understanding the trickster figures in human idiosyncrasies and what is often misunderstood as "evil."

        5 out of 5 stars A very good book. I enjoyed it........2004-08-05

This was a very good book, and I enjoyed it. I don't agree with anyone who says that this book only gets 1 or 2 stars. I give it 5 stars because it is very interesting. Especially the Saffron chapter.

        2 out of 5 stars Hmph.......2001-07-02

I'm so sick and tired of how these people do Sailor Moon. They don't know jack about it, all they want is the money and it's just plain SAD! I'm not going to blame Lianne because I KNOW Mixxine are the ones making her write these books in such a [bad] not even KINDERGARDEN fashion. All this American additive stuff. Uh-uh. It's just so STUPID! The only reason I gave this book 2 stars was because it's the only one I read twice. They all look cute on bookshelves though... And they rate this "Young Adult." PUH-LEEZE. I hate it. It makes me literally want to cry seeing how Sailor Moon is slowly being chewed up to be spat out resulting in nothing. Mixxine needs to get their ACT together and start making some REAL stuff. These Sailor Moon novels could be great if people wouldn't act so DUMB with it's writing. Those harpies. They really get on my nerves. If you want some REAL Sailor Moon stories your best bet is fanfics.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it for Lianne if nothing else..........2001-05-24

Okay, I know that most of you otakus out there might buy this expecting it to be like the original manga or show. But in all reality, it most likely won't turn out that way. Why? For one simple reason: all of the novels now written by Lianne Sentar are done so by an original Otaku and fanfic writer. Fanfic writer, you ask? A fanfic writer is someone who writes stories about the original characters, keeping them in character or going on a total tangent. I have read some of Lianne-sama's original fanfics, and if they are any indication as to her writing talents, then I would definatly say you should pick up her novels. As for the other guy... well, I don't know about him. Support fanfic writers everywhere by buying Lianne-sama's Sailor Moon novels! ...

In case you don't know, "doink" is my word for stupid. And stupid describes this book from cover to cover. Why did it have to be senselessly Americanized (I love 'N Sync and I know that some people in Japan also love 'N Sync but I don't think they fit into Sailormoon)? Please, fellow Sailormoon fans, don't buy this doinky book or any other Mixx Sailormoon novels because the other ones are just as doinky. Instead, buy the English manga off of Amazon, or even better go to your local comic shop and see if they have the Japanese manga available. But whatever you do, whatever other readers say, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK!

This is the second in the Sons of Caitlin Bravo miniseries. Cade Bravo is a gambler and had been one of the bad boys of New Venice, NV. He's ready to settle down and returns to New Venice and buys the house next to Jane Elliott. Jane has her own story to tell-married at 18 to another of New Venice real bad boys but he's gone now and she has pulled her life together. Cade is forbidden fruit she wants to believe but can't help but be interested in return. This is their wonderful story of finding love and happiness-I love it! It's not as humorous as Ms Rimmer's HIS EXECUTIVE SWEETHEART in the miniseries but it has all of the same wonderful characters to follow with a few more even. I love the 11 books and eHarlequin story in the Bravo Series. I'm looking forward to the last one in this miniseries SCROOGE AND THE SINGLE GIRL in Dec '02

2 out of 5 stars Still as Bad With The New Title.......2004-06-25

MERCURY RISING by Ryne Douglas Pearson is billed as dramatic suspense. I found it to be otherwise.

The government is worried about the security of its transmissions. As a result, all transmissions go through a coding box. To test the new code a sample is run in certain genius magazines. Enter one Simon, an autistic young man who likes puzzles. He can decode the transmissions with ease. That makes him a target for the agency that has spent millions and assured everyone that the code is unbreakable. When a hit goes wrong a young FBI agent takes up the case and slowly unravels what is going on and tries to protect Simon.

The novel is set mostly in Chicago and is full of that sort of facts an author will use to prove they know the city. Unfortunately they are almost all wrong. Blatant errors ruin the pace of a suspense novel for me. I also find them very irritating. Then, of course, I had trouble reading the book without visualizing the movie trailer. Bruce Willis plays a black man (at least in the book he is black and I see no reason to change it). Simon is sixteen and not nine like in the movie. The Willis character is also not really a hero. He manages to protect the kid for about two days. I am sure Willis had better luck.

Aside from the pacing that kept hitting speed bump errors, the book also suffers from overuse of inappropriate adjectives and adverbs. It almost looks like the story was written and then pumped up with last minute descriptions. Another sign of the book's quality is that it was originally released only a year ago under the title SIMPLE SIMON and it did not sell all that well (which makes for a lower-priced movie contract). So go see the movie if you want to but stay away from the book.

3 out of 5 stars Decent mystery fare..........2003-02-04

An autistic child gets a copy of a puzzle the FBI cryptographers planted into a Genius-level magazine. Basically, the kid sees the puzzle, solves it in about a minute, and then does what the puzzle solves into: instructions to call a number listed and tell that he solved the puzzle. When he does, he's targetted for "removal."

Putting the FBI into a tailspin of potential disaster - who is this person who called and cracked the code? And what will the man in charge of what is now a 10 million dollar mistake do to this child? The tension begins to rise... Enter Art Jefferson, who is the one man who might be able to keep this autistic child alive long enough to get him to some sort of safety.

It has a good rising tension throughout, and definitely the last side of tape two is just a race of danger and bullet-dodging and so forth. Very well done. I didn't expect some of the last few twists - though quite a bit of the plot I did see coming - and the ending quite satisfied me. I liked it... though I'd love to know why the book/audiobook FBI agent was a huge black man - and the movie had Bruce Willis. Why do they do that?

Anyway - well worth the time, and the abridgement wasn't half bad. The only real frustration I had was that Joe Morton tried too many accents (his Japanese is borderline offensive stereotype), and that sometimes you were on name overload - there were a lot of characters to this one, and by the nature of abridgement, you didn't get into a lot of their heads. Quite often I was thinking, "Wait, who's this guy again?"

            'Nathan

1 out of 5 stars One of the worst mystery books ever written.......2000-09-18

Ryne Douglas Pearson, give me the name of your writing teacher! Boring and clumsily plotted, with the wit and charm of the Sears Robuck catalog. If I had something better to do the day I read this junk I would have never have bothered to finish it. The protagonist of this book is an African-American but in the movie he's played by Bruce Willis. Shame on you Ryan for allowing the character to be de-raced by Hollywood.

            5 out of 5 stars Exalant book!.......2000-01-27

I am a big fan of Mercury Rising. I read the book first and then watched the movie both where very good. I hope that the movie and book give people more awareness to Autism! And I am proud to note that I am an Autistic myself.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but predictable.......1998-08-25

Mercury rising was a good book, but I felt that it was somewhat predictable. But I loved all the action scenes. I've never heard of Ryne Douglas Pearson before, but he is a great author and I would definately read another of his books.

In London at the turn of the 20th century, H. G. Wells's time machine mysteriously appears--empty--in a squatter's flat. Whence did it come, and for what purpose was it sent? The answers to these questions--though not to an even greater mystery connected with the machine's appearance--are contained in a letter written by Wells on May 2, 1946, which falls into the hands of one David Lambert on the eve of the millennium. Lambert, an industrial archeologist, reads the letter foretelling the arrival of the machine and, half convinced the whole thing is a hoax, goes to the address Wells provides, where, at the appointed hour, the time machine materializes. Thus begins Ronald Wright's fine and fantastical novel A Scientific Romance.

Romance can refer to an affair of the heart; it can also describe a heroic tale of extraordinary events. In A Scientific Romance, Wright plays on both possible meanings as he weaves a tragic story of betrayal and lost love into a larger narrative of time travel. Lambert, having lost the woman he loved, is reckless enough to test Wells's machine himself, catapulting 500 years into the future, where he finds London--indeed, all of England--a deserted, semitropical landscape. As David explores the future, he also sifts through his own past, creating in this Möbius strip of time and relationship a chilling cautionary tale about the limits of science and human ambition.

                    Book Description

It is 1999, and David Lambert, jilted lover and museum curator, is about to discover the startling news of the return of H. G. Wells's time machine to London. Motivated by a host of unanswered questions and innate curiosity, he propels himself deep into the next millenium. As he sets foot in the luxuriant but menacing new landscape, he soon begins to explore the ruins of his life, a labyrinth of erotic obsession and remorse involving his old friend Bird, and Anita -- the beautiful, eccentric Egyptologist they both loved, mysteriously dead at thirty-two.A Scientific Romance is a book of surpassing creativity and intelligence, as evocative as it is cautionary.

                    5 out of 5 stars A TRUE Scientific Romance..........2005-12-03

David Lambert, museum curator and lonely man, finds out that H.G. Wells's novel about a Time Machine was based on a real machine. He finds the machine and throws himself 500 years into the future. Why? Well, he has his reasons.
What does he find? Mostly he seems to find pieces of his own past as he explores the ruins of mankind's future. Yes, ruins. Something went wrong, very wrong. And now David tries to find out what went wrong as at the same time he tries to find answers to his own ruined life.
For a first time novel this is a GREAT first. I hope to see more novels from this author.

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy Plot Devices.......2003-11-16

This is an interesting concept novel used to drive home a point about technology and scientific hubris run rampant that eventually chokes our planet and all but destroys the human race.

In 1999 David Lambert, really a rather wandering soul, is a museum curator who has lost the love of his life to Mad Cow disease and his best friend in a falling out over a nasty love triangle involving the same woman. Unbelievably a letter falls into his hands that purports to be from H.G. Wells informing the reader of the return of the time machine to London-a fiction that turns out not to be fiction. So off he goes on his jaunt into the future.

This is a poor attempt at using the time travel concept as a plot device. There are just way too many coincidences and way too many convenient plot devices to move the story along. And it drags on unrelentlessly in the middle with some very tedious slogging as the author gets carried away over describing the future he finds.

At times, the novel is very good and it does have some merit. But frankly, the plot devices used, especially in the end, undermine the novel.

2 out of 5 stars Good Concept, Boring Writing.......2002-12-03

First the concept - A man with an uncurable disease, discovers a time machine created by an associate of H.G. Wells. He decides to go to the future to seek a cure.

Unfortunately the writing style to this book was excrutiatingly boring, written in the first person. The narrator (the man with the incurable disease) jumps from concept to concept, without anything interesting to say. There is virtually no action. When he gets to the future, everything is destroyed and you keep waiting for him to encounter people, which never seems to happen. I found H.G. Wells Time Machine to be vastly more interesting and that was written over 100 years ago.

Many other readers have given this book very high marks for writing and I wonder how they can? I know I kept finding myself skipping over a lot of paragraphs throughout the book and had to fight with myself to keep from just jumping to the back of the book and reading the end so I could get on with it.

4 out of 5 stars a good premise, a good book, could have been even tighter.......2001-04-03

I certainly wish Wright would write some more novels. He's mostly a travel writer, but has proven with this release that he's capable of a lot. By taking this modern look at HG Wells, he joins the ranks of spec-fic's growing cadre of talented newcomers.

2 out of 5 stars "Scientific Romance" has little of either........2000-06-07

Truly a fascinating premise...I've always wanted a time machine of my own, but the protagonist wastes his opportunity. So does the author. The style is quite true to the characters, though, right down to the you-have-to-have-been-there-to-know England. Particularly fascinating were the fragmentary documents discovered along the way...mind-blowing concepts like a brochure for the Zooseum owned by Disney-Vatican; a final message by a desperate medico to her family recommending a particular METHOD of suicide (not if, just how), followed by the arrest report made by the military. If you're into postapocalyptic imagery (especially if you've been to England) and liked Shute's On The Beach, you'll enjoy this one. If not, just take the two incidental concepts I've spoiled for you and pen your own version of what could happen if the world doesn't realize that eight billion people can't all live the California dream; you'll probably have more fun, and you'll certainly save time!

War of the Worlds is one of the most important science fiction novels, but its importance can be difficult to see without some knowledge of the time in which it was written. Using essays (some by Wells himself) and copious footnotes, this critical edition does a fine job of placing War of the Worlds into its proper context

                              5 out of 5 stars Truths Kubler-Ross never knew.......2005-12-28

I sat down on Friday night, figuring to spend most of the weekend "working through" Here on the Way to There. I finished before I had lunch on Saturday. It was not exactly in one sitting, but i read the book through in one "go" as it were, following its points and even anticipating some of it, but most of all, appreciating, deeply feeling the truth and gentility in what it said.

This book is so very much like Shannon's other writings and his public addresses in tone and pace that you can actually hear his voice in the words. The same mix of deep intellect, and easy understanding, putting next to each other Milton, Joyce, the Doctors of the Church, and quotes from your aunt! and they all fit and flow and create a "seamless garment" that fits so comfortably.

I was very impressed ,and very moved by many of the things that Shannon said. Let me refer to some of them.

The idea of passion as something that is endured, or suffered. Yes, that is exactly what passion is, in any of its forms, and to think of dying as a passion is something that never occurred to me, no matter how many times "The Passion of Jesus" ran through my ears (page 7).

The necessity of "the person... to forgive himself or herself and open the depths of his or her heart to God" is something that I have seen in those I have seen die (page 9).

It never occurred to me that "death is ....something that we do....an action." (page 13) but of course it is. It is something that takes all our concentration. And that is why death is often precedes by more than a week the cessation of biological functions.

Shannon says "In death we at last cease to live the illusion of a separate, self-centered existence and realize that our life is -- and always has been -- lived with God in Christ and without sisters and brothers ( page 14)." And that is precisely why suicide is not an option, it seems to me, because suicide is a self-centered, self-absorbed act. What we want, what we think we need, a kind of ultimate self-centered existence.

The fact that "you cannot see your own face.... The reflection of your face is not your face....." (page 15) is very much like that painting of a pipe by Magritte that is labeled "This is not a pipe." It never occurred to me. And so, the "Beatific" vision is not only seeing and recognizing the face of God, it is also seeing and recognizing our own face! As the Rabbi you tell of did not at first recognize his name when it was read at the gate of Heaven.

And so on, and so on, there are just too many things I want to say about the book, too many passages I want to talk about for me to go over them all here.

Fr. Shannon's book is a comfort and a blessing, beyond words.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for all Christians.......2005-08-15

Thoughtful, easy to understand, relevant to today's everyday life in America. This book, written by a theologian is a wonderful book for 'all' Christians and non-Christians alike.

5 out of 5 stars Theology, Practical Advice, and FAQs.......2005-04-25

Shannon, a priest and professor emeritus in the religions studies department at a Nazareth College, makes an important point in his introduction that informs much of what follows. He offers dictionary definitions for "death" and "dying," each dealing with endings. He then gives the Christian definitions: "Death is the beginning of life, life at its best, at its most real" and dying is "to start living in a most wondrous way." He also takes care to explore death and dying as two different experiences that reflect continuity (existence continues after death) and discontinuity (existence after death is radically different from existence before death.)

Against that background, Shannon addresses the form of life after death, comparing it to resurrection (Jesus) not resuscitation (Lazarus) and posits that the "the resurrection of the body and life everlasting" expressed in the Creed are experienced at the end of each person's mortal experience, "which, for that person, is the end of time."

These are but a few examples of the richness Shannon brings to this imminently readable and thought-provoking work. Other topics include funeral rites and organ donation, diminishments of old age with practical advice on living wills, hospice care, and medical decisions. As one would expect, the author also looks at questions of hell, and purgatory, limbo, and reincarnation. The final section, What We Believe about Heaven, tackles questions about heaven as a family reunion, a garden of delight, the Garden of Eden, and the Glorious Royal City. The book closes with answers to frequently asked questions about heaven, nearly 100 notes, and an index.
