Book Description
Creating Circles and Ceremonies is the accumulation of decades of circles, ceremonies, rituals, Mystery plays, initiations, rites of passage, and other magickal workings co-created by the Zell-Ravenhearts, today's foremost Wizard/Witch couple.
For more than 30 years, Oberon and Morning Glory have traveled widely throughout the worldwide magickal communityparticipating in gatherings, conducting workshops, and creating rituals for groups large and small. They have met and made Magick with the leaders of many traditions: Celtic Shamanism, British Dianic, Italian Strega, Welsh Witchcraft, Faerie Trad, Ceremonial Magick, Ozark Druidry, the New Reformed Order of the Golden Dawn (NROOGD), Hinduism, Native American tribes, Greek and Egyptian mythology, and the futuristic Church of All Worlds.
Here, in one easy-to-read volume, is their collection of chants, invocations, circle-castings, quarter-callings, spells, and ceremonies. It is also a "kit" to use to assemble your own rituals, for any season or reason:
Book I presents a basic ritual outline. Each element is followed by numerous examples which may be "plugged in" to customize your own ceremony.
Book II gives numerous examples of actual ceremonies: Esbats (full Moons) and special occasions; Rites of Passage; Mysteries and Initiations; spells and consecrations. These can be adapted and modified as needed for any size groupfrom small family gatherings in your living room, to huge outdoor celebrations involving thousands of people.
Book III provides an assortment of full rituals and ritual elements for celebrations of the eight great seasonal festivals called the Wheel of the Year. Versions of these have been commemorated for millennia in most traditional cultures of the Northern Hemisphere; and today are universal throughout the worldwide Pagan community.

If I could have only one..........2007-08-03
If I was going to be stranded on a desert island and the Fates ordained that I could only have one Pagan book there is absolutely no doubt that this would be the ONE. It is so power-packed with information, lots of nifty line drawings, and all is written in such an enjoyable style. It's by far the best Pagan book I own and one that I refuse to be without.
VERY HELPFUL.......2007-07-04
I am really enjoying this book. I wish there were more out there like this. I have several of the authors sculptures and found the same attention to detail within the the pages of the book. I highly reccomend it to anyone interested in Wicca/Witchcraft. It give real information about many subjects that are not often written about. It was a joy to find some of the older and well remembered rites and stories within.
An Invaluable Resource.......2007-05-19
This is an incredible resource for anyone who is organizing, conducting or writing a ritual. I had always been a solitaire, but when I was asked to perform a sabbat ritual for a group of beginners, I jumped on the opportunity. Because my own personal rituals were highly impromptu, I knew the group ritual needed more structure. I shopped for a few good books, and I am very glad I bought this one. I highly recommend it for both beginners and those with more experience. It's not a book you would necessarily read from cover to cover (although you could), but is more of a useful collection of writings you can turn to every time you wish to create a ritual.
Great book!.......2007-04-11
This book is the ultimate guide to the solitary. It can be quite difficult to organize your family celebrations without the aid and expertise of a priest/ess. This book helps me to create rituals and circles that the whole family can participate in (children and Christians alike) at a level that everyone is capable and comfortable with. It has also been a great help in organizing my private ceremonies. Even when there is no reason to cast a circle or perform a ceremony the book contains a great deal of daily inspiration. It's truely herbal tea for the pagan soul.

Creating Circles & Ceremonies
By Oberon & Morning Glory Zell-Ravenheart
New Page Books, 2006
Review by Anodea Judith
Oberon Zell-Ravenheart and his wife, Morning Glory, have done it at last. Compiling decades of experience in creating rituals and ceremonies for all occasions, from the celebrations of the seasons to blessing your dinner or a new home, this book will provide ideas, information, theory, and practice to bring a sense of the sacred into everyday life.
Author of the acclaimed Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard, Oberon has written a Pagan bible that every practitioner of magic and ritual will want to have on a shelf within easy reach. With spells, chants, invocations, herbal recipes, and more, you won't want to go through a moon cycle without using this book.
From my many years of working together with this magical couple in the Church of All Worlds, I am delighted that our vast treasury of Pagan liturgy has finally been written down. Collected from many contributors, this compilation brings together the best of the Pagan community in poetry and song, innovation and invocation, including our Magic 101 class that was offered for many years as a primer in magical training.
The wealth of information herein is divided into three smaller sections. Book I, "The Magic Circle" outlines the basic theory and practice of creating ceremonies, such as creating sacred space, calling the quarters, invoking spirits, deities, or helpers, and basic ritual etiquette. Book II, "Rites and Rituals" describes ceremonies for all occasions, including rites of passage, marriages, and initiations. Book III: "Wheel of the Year" then applies these principles to the eight seasonal holidays that mark the solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days of the year. The final Appendices contain information you will use as a reference for years to come.
Lavishly illustrated with Oberon's unique artwork, this book is destined to be as classic a book for ritual recipes as "The Joy of Cooking" was to the culinary world.

Amitav Ghosh's extraordinary first novel makes a claim on literary turf held by Gabriel García Márquez and Salman Rushdie. In a vivid and magical story, The Circle of Reason traces the misadventures of Alu, a young master weaver in a small Bengali village who is falsely accused of terrorism. Alu flees his home, traveling through Bombay to the Persian Gulf to North Africa with a bird-watching policeman in pursuit.

Dunne's rich invitation to a choice for spiritual adventure.......1999-09-07
A reader starts a journey with Dunne's hypothetical searcher to experience solitude and
connection: and to discover in both intimacy with God and man. Rather than avoid the struggle inherent in the separation of man from God and man from man, Dunne encourages the spiritual voyager to travel to and fro finding God in both and soul in the gap between mind and body. The author uses Christianity to transcend theology and human psychology and to open a door to experience God in oneself and in mankind.
Excellent guide on faith and human interaction.......1998-12-22
Drawing from the precepts of many religions and approaches to God, faith, and life, Fr. Dunne crafts an academic but practical guide for achieving closeness to God, then maintaining that closeness while completing our earthly journey in a most humanly-fulfilling manner.
profound and moving.......1998-02-01
John Dunne is one of the most moving and profound spiritual theologians of our day. No one -- believer or unbeliever -- could fail to be moved by this deep meditation on human loneliness and longing. Dunne's use of literary material is striking and always illuminating. I belive I have read every work by Dunne and this is one of his very best.

Book Description
At last, here is the eagerly anticipated new novel by Rosemary Kirstein, critically acclaimed author of The Steerswoman and The Outskirter’s Secret. This though-provoking story calls to mind the writing of Ursula K. LeGuin and Sheri Tepper.
How do you find a person you have never seen, or have never heard described? And what if the consequences of not finding him are too terrible to imagine?
The steerswoman Rowan has learned that Slado, a mysterious wizard, has secretly been working spells of incredible power. Both the Inner Lands and the Outkskirts are now threatened by his magic—and before the destruction becomes too great to reverse, Rowan must find Slado so that he can be stopped. But how does one stop the most powerful man in the world?
In the seaside town of Alemeth, the Annex holds centuries of steerswomen’s journals. They may contain clues to Slado’s location, but combing through them would take more time than Rowan has to spend. Then she encounters a lost friend: Janus, one of the few rare Steersmen. But Janus quit the order without explanation. Now the bright, beloved companion of Rowan’s student days has become a man dominated by dark moods and even darker secrets.
When sleepy Alemeth transforms into a place of chaos, terror, and sudden death, Rowan wonders if all the secrets are connected. The shocking answer will change the steerswoman—and her world—forever. . . .

Lyrical series.......2004-09-26
This is the third in the Steerswoman series. As with the first two, the writing is beautiful and the story is both thoughtful and interesting. These are intelligent books, easy to read; the characters are funny, smart, and tough in their own ways.
Usually I have trouble with books based in the future that depict people's return to magical ways of thinking. This one, however, makes sense. Everything happens for a reason; there is a structure that functions very well. There is nothing gratuitous about the story, or the society; everything has it's reason. The conflict set up for the next book isn't a physical war, although that might happen as well; it's a conflict of morals and behavior.
Rowan the Steerswoman is come to the Archives, looking for a man whom she has never seen. She has only his name and ocupation: he is the head wizard, the commander of the magic that shapes their world. The Archives are a secondary repository for copies of all the collected knowledge of the Steerswomen and men. The old keeper has died. The archives are a complete mess. Rowan has spent too long on strange roads in strange places, and no longer understands how to deal well with the normal people of her world. And the lost Steersman, the lost friend, is found again; but he is already under ban for not answering a Steerswoman. His answers are strange and raise as many questions as they put to rest... Then things from the outer lands are seen in the inner lands.
Anything else I say will be a spoiler, and you don't want this lovely book spoiled.
The Lost Steersman.......2004-09-14
In this intrigue filled sequel to the Steerswoman Rosemary Kirstein returns us to the alien world of Rowan, Steerswoman. After leaving Bel, Rowan finds herself in the small seaside village of Alemeth on her way to discover the evil wizard Slado, who in the past has used magic to destroy the outskirts and all who live upon it. The local steerswoman Mira has recently died and left the Annex a total disgrace, months worth of work must be done in order to find any information on the wizard.
Hidden within the town is another more surprising thing than Mira's disgraceful state of affairs, the lost steersman Janus. Janus resigned his post after being shipwrecked and refused to answer why thus bringing himself under the ban. Now Rowan must try to unravel the mystery that is Janus, overcome the suspicious villagers notions of what a steerswoman is and somehow discover how to find a man, Slado to be precise, when he is nowhere to be found.
The steerswomen and men make a delightful use of logic and observation, Sherlock Holmes would be proud. Their endless search for knowledge is leading them on a path which I believe mirrors our own somewhat. What is magic after all? Is there such a thing? Or is it merely something we don't yet know the science of. The Steerswoman and the Lost Steersman are a fantastic set of books not quite fantasy and not quite sci-fi and quite refreshing for being a little of both.
Pure Reading Delight.......2004-07-09
As a writer, I find I have trouble even finishing someone else's book because, too often, I'm thinking how it could have been better. This is one book that made me settle back and enjoy. It's been a long time since I read something so delightful! Yes, from a series standpoint, it goes in a different direction, but what a fun trip! Kirstein's level of invention is extraordinary, and she constantly finds new ways to explore this world. If you've been looking for a sense of wonder, here it is.
I am intrigued by the tension she sets up between the reader (who knows all about science fiction concepts) and Rowan ( who is discovering the truth about her world). Some of the things so mysterious to Rowan seem fairly obvious to me, but part of the fun is wondering how and when she will come to understand them.
Characters are vivid and intriguing as ever, and this book includes some moments when I laughed out loud. Also, one of the best alien first-contact scenarios I've ever read.
Great book!.......2004-05-17
I discovered the Steerwoman books only recently with the publication of this one; this is a great set of books and I certainly hope it won't be too long before the next one. Yes, this isn't the final book and doesn't take Rowan in the direction we expected, but the story does continue!
This is not genre work at all but rather a great set of novels witha great plot, a fascinating backdrop, and real human characters. I highly recommend it!
Great Book!.......2004-02-08
Kirstein sets up more mystery than gets solved, but it is ever so worthwhile to get there! Great characters, excellent world, and the deepening of various mysteries just makes everything more fascinating.
And the alien contact part is a wow all of its own.
Can hardly wait for the next book!

Delightful reading.......2007-08-10
It is precious stone plenty of wisdom that invites you to see the world and the life from an holistic perspective.
I have enjoyed each paragraph bringing each message or concept to my own daily experience.
I strongly recommend it.
Excellent, life changing book.......2007-02-19
I absolutely enjoyed this book and found it completely relevant to my life. I have been quoting it since I read it!
Not for Control Freaks.......2005-06-16
Seven Life Lessons shows us that the control we humans think we have on everything is mostly an illusion. The best laid plans of mice and men often go astray. To me this spontenaeity is a wonderful thing. I love the fact that it sometimes rains when the weather bureau has predicted sunny skies--or vice versa. It makes me understand that the universe is magnificent and is beyond control of any kind. I believe there is a line in E. M. Forster's Passage to India when the character Mrs. Moore says about Ganges River: "What a beautiful river! What a terrible river!" She makes this observation right after the calm beauty of the river has exploded with the sudden splash of a crocodile in the middle of the river. What a boring world if everything were predictable and controllable. This book does indeed offer some suggestions on how to use the scientific discoveries about chaos to enrich our lives and to appreciate the complexity and beauty of the planet Earth. I return to it again and again when I'm feeling barren and dry.
Amazing book.......2002-02-27
I found this book to reverse every mental polarity in me, as if I had been pulled through infinity.
The power to change our worldview.......2001-02-05
Briggs and Peats accomplish something truly extraordinary. They make clear to us, with the help of Chaos theory, to what extent our Western worldview dominates and distorts our take on or sense of reality. They trace the history of Western thought from the Renaissance to the present and demonstrate how this mechanistic worldview has led to a severe distortion not only of our own sense of self, but of the true nature of our planet and the all life forms it supports.
Without attempting to replace one belief system with another and without telling us what to do, they leave us with a clear sense that the relativism of the post post-modern world is nothing but a misunderstanding of the nature all worldviews:
They are basically theories, and as such, they are provisional in nature and self-destruct eventually because they get stuck and cannot be updated anymore, no matter how hard we try. We have reached that point - a point that does not signal the end of history but rather the beginning of a new chapter.
