In a book that serves as a both a sequel to Dead Man's Walk and a prequel to the beloved Lonesome Dove, McMurtry fills in the missing chapters in the Call and McCrae saga. It is a fantastic read, in many ways the best and gutsiest of the series. We join the Texas Rangers in their waning Indian-fighting years. The Comanches, after one last desperate raid led by the fearsome-but-aging Buffalo Hump, are almost defeated, though Buffalo Hump's son, Blue Duck, still terrorizes the relentless flow of settlers and lawmen. As Augustus and Woodrow follow one-eyed, tobacco-spitting Captain Inish Scull deep into a murderous madman's den in Mexico, their thoughts turn toward the end of their careers and the women they love in remarkably different ways back in Austin. What's amazing about McMurtry's West is that he sees beyond the romance. Neither his Indians, his cowboys, his gunslingers, nor his women act the way they did in either Zane Grey novels or John Wayne movies. Incredible beauty and lightning-quick violence are the bookends of his West, but it is the in-between moments of suffering and boredom where McMurtry shines. The suffering is poignant and heart-rending; the boredom tempered with doses of Augustus McCrae's sharp humor. Don't be surprised if you find yourself crying and laughing on the same page.

Book Description

THE NATIONAL BESTSELLER

The second book of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy, Comache Moon takes us once again into the world of the American West.

Texas Rangers August McCrae and Woodrow Call, now in their middle years, continue to deal with the ever-increasing tensions of adult life -- Gus with his great love, Clara Forsythe, and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young whore who loves him. Two proud but very different men, they enlist with the Ranger troop in pursuit of Buffalo Hump, the great Comanche war chief; Kicking Wolf, the celebrated Comanche horse thief; and a deadly Mexican bandit king with a penchant for torture. Assisting the Rangers in their wild chase is the renowned Kickapoo tracker, Famous Shoes.

Comanche Moon closes the twenty-year gap between Dead Man's Walk and Lonesome Dove, following beloved heroes Gus and Call and their comrades in arms -- Deets, Jake Spoon, and Pea Eye Parker -- in their bitter struggle to protect the advancing West frontier against the defiant Comanches, courageously determined to defend their territory and their way of life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent...I Hated for it to End.......2007-09-13

It's been a long time since I've read a book that I got so wrapped up in, that I hated to finish it. "Commanche Moon" was like that for me. Following the middle years of Gus, Call, Deets, Newt and quite a few more characters first brought to life in "Lonesome Dove" was a nice refreshing change for me. I don't want to go into too much detail regarding the story, feel free to browse several other reveiws posted here that are more than happy to spell out spoilers that are better off discovered while reading, but suffice it to say, if you are a fan of the other books in this series, you won't be disappointed with "Commanche Moon". All of the things fans love about these books are once again present here; rich characters, excellent action, some romance, comedy....everything you could want. I can't wait to go back and read the series in chronological order now. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as Lonesome Dove.......2007-04-27

McMurtry caught lightning in a bottle with Lonesome Dove. No book in the series came as close. I almost wish he'd left Call and McCrae's past a mystery. Still, not a bad read in its own right.

I love the way McMurtry writes! This was another brilliant story about the West.

5 out of 5 stars Part of a huge masterpiece........2006-06-15

Not only a great western, but also a fantastic horror book.
When I considered some of the scenes involving the evil characters of the book I didn't know where to put it in my
book collection.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book.......2006-03-28

Commanche Moon was undoubtedly the best western book I have ever read, plus it was one of the best books I have ever read period. What I especially liked about the book was the way McMurtry characterized the Indians. He made them come alive as individuals within a specific culture and a certain historical time period. I also enjoyed the Texas Rangers, but not nearly as much as I did the Indians. It was obvious to me that McMurtry has done consideralbe research on Amerindians and he has used that research well in constructing the characters in his book. I was always excited when I started a chapter and saw it was going to be about one or more of the Indian characters. Many authors sterotype the Indians of the American West, making them too cruel or too noble, but McMurtry managed to portray them as total human beings and thereby created fascinating characters to read about. There were many other parts of the book that I enjoyed, but the author's characterization of the Amerindians was easily the best.

Book Description

Jack Jackson's Comanche Moon is the extraordinary story of Cynthia Ann Parker, a white settler child kidnapped by a band of Comanche Indians in 1836 in Texas. Brought up as a Comanche, she became the wife of a feared Comanche warrior and gave birth to Quanah, a warrior-son who became chief of the Comanches and eventually led them in their last great battles against the relentlessly encroaching white settlers. This is the story of their defeat and the end of the Comanche Nation's dominance of the Texas plains.

Jackson is one of the original figures of the American underground comics movement of the 1960s. Unlike his peers, whose comics celebrated the counterculture, Jackson instead created lively, detailed and historically accurate works that chronicle the bloody, fascinating history around the founding of Texas. Told against a rich backdrop of 19th century life and the complex historical and political conflicts that fueled the brutal wars between Native Americans and settlers, the story of Naduah the white Comanche represents non-fiction comics at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Days Of A Great People.......2006-03-28

This is the finest and most intricate graphic book (not quite a novel) I've ever read. The illustrations reach levels of beauty and artistry seldom seen in this genre of storytelling. Comanche Moon (not to be confused with the Larry McMurtry novel of the same name) tells the end times history of the Comanche peoples, with emphasis on their great leader, Quanah Parker, and his mother, the "white Comanche" Cynthia Ann Parker. The story of the Comanche's' violent way of life, their struggles against the whites in Texas and across the Southwest, and of the brilliant leadership of Quanah Parker, are rendered in a way that provides as much meaningful information to a reader as most text-only tales of the Comanche and the brutal period of the mid-1800's thru the 1870's. This is a great (though often sad and bloody) segment of North American history, and this rapidly-paced, carefully produced graphic re-telling of it is a more than worthy read.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate graphic novel format biography of Quanah Parker.......1998-12-13

Historically accurate biography of Quanah Parker, last Commanche to live free on the LLana Estacata of Texas. Also bio information about his mother Cynthia Ann Parker, a European girl captured and raised by Commanches as their own, later taken back by her white family by force after she had married and had children as a Commanche woman. Lots of information regarding the everyday life of Commanche people. Told in a graphic novel format , the drawing is not particularly beautiful, but the story and accuracy make up for it. My copy is bound in psuedo leather, looks nice. Highly recomended for adults or older adolecents. Especially those who are intellectually curious, who may or may not have trouble with standard written texts.

Judson Ingalls' trial keeps you in suspense throughout the novel, leaving one to wonder to the very end whether he actually killed his wife or not. While still suspecting his daughter may have had some involvement. The romance between the lawyer and D.A. kept everyone on the edge of their seats....for an excellent ending to an overcharge, extremely emotional novel.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful series.......2000-01-13

This book has a good story line that ties in well with the others in this series. There is very good character continuity considering that the books are written by several different authors. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series to find out how it all wraps up.

      Book Description

Before Thomas J. Lucier wrote the first edition of How To Make Money Buying Pre-Foreclosure Properties Before They Hit The County Courthouse Steps in 1989, he was making time consuming and costly mistakes. The mistakes were inevitable; no one had written a book on how to buy pre-foreclosure properties, so Tom had to learn the hard way from his own mistakes and first hand experiences. All of the advice that he received said: "buy property on the county courthouse steps after it has been foreclosed on." But Tom eventually learned to avoid those costly courthouse-bidding wars by buying directly from property owners whose mortgage loans are in default and facing foreclosure. And the book that didn't exist back in 1985, when Tom bought his first pre-foreclosure property, is now in its fourth revised edition.

The newly revised fourth edition of How To Make Money Buying Pre-Foreclosure Properties Before They Hit The County Courthouse Steps was released on October 1, 2003, and is comprised of fourteen meaty chapters that are packed chock-full of step-by-step instructions, ready-to-use information and practical, no-nonsense advice. You'll learn:

      1. The difference between judicial and non-judicial foreclosure.
      2. How the short payoff sale acquisition technique works.
      3. How to get subordinate or "junior" lienholders to discount their liens by fifty percent or more.
      4. How to use foreclosure notices to find all of the property owners in your county whose loans are in default and facing foreclosure.
      5. How to use direct mail to contact property owners whose loans are in default.
      6. How to perform due diligence on pre-foreclosure properties.
      7. How to quickly verify loan information with foreclosing lenders.
      8. How to accurately estimate the current market value of a pre-foreclosure property.
      9. How to negotiate with property owners whose loans are in default and facing foreclosure.
      10. How to properly prepare your purchase agreements and protect your interests when buying pre-foreclosure properties.
      11. How to package, market and resell pre-foreclosure properties for maximum profit.
      12. How to do a thorough pre-buy property inspection.
      13. What you need to know about your state's foreclosure statute when buying pre-foreclosure properties.

How To Make Money Buying Pre-Foreclosure Properties Before They Hit The County Courthouse Steps has a fourteen-page chapter on the much-ballyhooed short payoff sale acquisition technique. The problem with ninety-nine percent of the short sales hype that's currently being foisted onto an unsuspecting public, by unscrupulous real estate hucksters peddling overpriced courses and boot camp seminars, is that it's based on misinformation, half-truths, distortions and outright lies. And unfortunately, all of this hype has fueled unrealistic expectations on the part of would-be short sale investors, who've been led to believe, that every lender in America will approve a short payoff sale, at the drop of a hat. Tom Lucier gives you the unvarnished truth about short payoff sales, along with detailed, step-by-step instructions on exactly how the short payoff of a mortgage or deed of trust actually works.

How To Make Money Buying Pre-Foreclosure Properties Before They Hit The County Courthouse Steps comes complete with the following ready-to-use worksheets, letters, checklists, notices, forms and agreements:

      1. Short payoff sale checklist.
      2. Sample notice of lis pendens.
      3. Sample notice of default.
      4. Loan breach letter.
      5. Borrower's letter of authorization to release loan information.

      7. Notice of default worksheet.
      8. Due diligence checklist.

      28. Assignment of purchase agreement.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need a degree from Harvard Law School in order to make money buying properties directly from owners whose mortgage or deeds of trust loans are in default, and about to be sold on the county courthouse steps at a public foreclosure auction sale. Granted, finding, researching, inspecting, negotiating, buying and reselling pre-foreclosure properties is a lot of hard work. But it can be a very lucrative line of work if you really know what you're doing, are well organized, and have the persistence that's necessary to be a profitable investor.

And, unlike the roving weekend real estate carnies, late-night, cable-TV hucksters, Internet real estate whiz kids, and a certain Harvard Business School graduate posing as a "real estate savant," Tom Lucier doesn't claim to know-it-all, and you'll never hear him promise to make you a pre-foreclosure property millionaire within the next thirty days. The simple fact remains that no real estate investment strategy will work unless you do!

This is the absolute best book ever written about buying property directly from owners in foreclosure! The chapter on short payoff sales is just plain brilliant! No fluff, no filler and no white spaces!

      1 out of 5 stars Rudimentary.......2004-02-27

This book is pretty basic and not worth the money. Lucier must be trying to make money on the book and not on in real estate. A real disappointment.

1 out of 5 stars How to Make..........2004-02-21

If you look over the positive reviews, you notice they are all written by commonly named individuals with no location listed. Furthermore, all of the comments use the same verbage and contain similar idiosyncrasies. Someone tell the author or the author's friends to stop writing positive reviews to boost sales. Instead, use that time being wasted to do some research and write a decent book.

                    Book Description

David Brinkley used to be a hero, the greatest the world had ever seen--until he retired, got married, moved to the suburbs, and packed on a few extra pounds. Now all the heroes are dead or missing, and his beloved New York is on the edge of chaos. It's up to Brinkley to come to the rescue, but he's in the midst of a serious mid-life crisis--his superpowers are failing him. At long last this classic satire that changed superheroes forever, and became the inspiration for the next generation of comic book creators, is back in print. It's a hilarious thriller that digs deep into the American psyche.

                    4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-30

A satire that is the story of an aging Superman analogue. The various major dc heroes perhaps do exist in his world, but analogous versions abound, as well, particularly a warped Marvel family analogue, complete with allies and enemies - some of whom were produced inc*stuously and recorded on the Saturn s*xometer.

The protagonist almost discovers that there is a dangerous conspiracy at work, and he has to summon the enthusiasm to get out of suburbia and do something about it, whether his costume fits or not.

This book obviously had some influence on Busiek, Moore, Morrison, etc., and writers of that type, and what they ended up doing with Astro City, Miracleman, Watchmen and other titles.

When I first read this as a kid I had no idea who Walter Cronkite was, or other such American pop culture references, so that sort of thing may detract a little from the work now, but at least you can look 'em up on the internet, easily.

Definitely worth a look as a seminal work, even though obviously satirical.

4 out of 5 stars Grant Morrison DID NOT WRITE THIS BOOK........2007-07-11

Robert Mayer did. Other than that, all I have to say is that it is an entertaining quick read and as others have sad, many ideas and themes present in this book are present in later works by Alan Moore, Rick Veitch, and even Grant Morrison himself (who is my all time favorite comic writer). Some of the satire is a bit dated, but some still applies today.

5 out of 5 stars Superheroes are dead........2006-07-26

"There's no place for heroes anymore. Nobody wants them. They never did, not really. Think back. They always liked me better than you. And you know why? Because at least I was human part of the time, while you were always invincible. And what did they call me behind my back? The Big Green Fruit! I know it. And they liked Batman better than both of us--because he was all human. It's human weakness they cherish, not strength. Look what they do to their own heroes. The Kennedys. King. Yes, even Wallce, he was a hero to some. They shoot them down, that's what. You go back, make a fool of yourself, you think you'll get sympathy? The hell you will. They'll laugh. They love to see the mighty fallen." -- Superfolks, by Robert Mayer.

Grant Morrison, one of the Big Names in comic book writing wrote the foreward, which, in short, credits this book with modern comic books. I find that really interesting, considering, until I noticed the spine at Borders, I had never heard of it before. But he's right.

The book is written in the style I try to emulate, which is to say, I wish I wrote like this. The entire thing keeps a hallucinatory, unreal edge, facilitated by strange tropes- like the appearance of a variety of famous people in strange ways; Martin Van Buren is the head of the CIA, Marylin Monroe shows up as a nurse, and Joe Dimaggio is mentioned in passing as a limo driver. None of them are actually those famous people, but in the same way comic book artists will sneak real faces into their panels, these deceased pop culture references move the book out of reality. There's more to it though- word play. For example, our hero is an alien superman from the planet Cronk, which was destroyed. The meteorites from that planet, which are the hero's only weakness are called "Cronkite".

But there's an earnestness in the story, and understanding... a fleshing of all of the characters that brings a real concern to the story- it's not just absurdity. The absurdity moves you out of this world and into theirs, it ropes you in and holds you against the story.

Which brings us back to modern comic books, and the quote above, which really sums up the whole thing. Comics have become more self aware, in part because of increased cynicism overall. Heroes are passé, so to keep the characters alive, we need to move away from tights and capes and into angst and introspection. Tortured heroes. Flawed men and women in a decaying world has become the norm. This mode peaked in Alan Moore's The Watchmen (which will be massacred in film form sometime soon), which featured some pretty dysfunctional heroes in a world where superheroes were outlawed. Today, we see the same trend in Powers, which focuses on normal people living in the wake of superheroes, and deconstructionist adventures like Rising Stars.

So, in short, if you're a comic book fan, this is a great book. If you hate comic books, this is a fantastic book. If, like me, you can't help but get caught up in the metaphor of superheroes- the mythical aspect of it- well, this is pretty much the perfect book on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars The (Semi) Modern Source of the Revisionist Superhero.......2006-06-14

This is a great novel. I didn't find it funny so much as clever, interesting and involving. Many of the plot elements have been taken from this novel and incorporated into later comics work by Alan Moore Frank Miller and Rick Weitch, to name just a few. Sexual content may make this inappropriate for younger readers, but it's intended for an mature audience by design. I've reread SUPERFOLKS many times - if you grew up on the idealistic heroes of yesteryear (especially Superman), you will too.

                    4 out of 5 stars What a wonderful treat!.......2005-12-24

If you like superhero comics, or if you liked them back in the day and remember the feeling fondly, you will enjoy this book enormously. Robert Mayer's writing is clever, funny, and humane-- as witty as the book is, as much as it plays (havoc) with the genre, it never veers all the way toward parody; in fact, its protagonist is more painfully human than any of his avatars ever were. I won't assume that all of the current greats (besides Morrison, obviously) have read this, but it's easy to imagine the humanity of some of Moore's, Bendis's, Morrison's, Robinson's and Gaiman's "flawed" gods to have been inspired by Mayer's book.
There's also a bonus for readers over 40, especially New Yorkers and those who came of age in the New York metropolitan area in the countless sly references to people and events that made up the fabric of the early 1970s here in Metropolis. But don't be put off if you don't fit that profile-- those particular pleasures of recognition aren't in any way crucial to the reading experience, and there's a whole lot to savor besides them.

Bible scholars used the Bible to justify separation between blacks and whites, but the Gospel had been twisted and misinterpreted. Race, Religion & Racism: Volume 2 provides a discussion of how the Bible was used to subjugate blacks in America from early to modern times, with liberal attention to passages and quotes throughout. An intriguing history and challenge to the legacy of biblical teachings in America.
