Readers who come to Rum Punch after having seen Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film adaptation, Jackie Brown, are in for a few surprises. Mainly, Jackie Burke is a 44-year-old white woman (but just as hard-boiled as Pam Grier), bail bondsman Max Cherry has a much more prominent role in the proceedings, and the novel takes place in Miami--not Los Angeles. The core of the story, however, remains the same: when the cops try to use Jackie to get at Ordell Robbie, the gunrunner she's been bringing cash into the country for, she hatches a plan--with help from Max--to keep the money for herself. It all comes together in the traditional Elmore Leonard style, where the conversations are as crisply written and suspenseful as the action scenes. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
Ordell "Whitebread" Robbie makes a fine living selling illegal high-powered weaponry to the wrong people. Jackie Burke couriers Ordell's profits from Freeport to Miami. But the feds are on to Jackie—and now the aging, but still hot, flight attendant will have to do prison time or play ball, which makes her a prime "loose end" that Ordell needs to tie up permanently. Jackie, however, has other options. And with the help of Max Cherry—an honest but disgruntled bail bondsman looking to get out—she could even end up with a serious nest egg in the process.

quinten tarriotinos JACKIE BROWN.......2007-08-14
this is the book that quinten tarrintinos movie Jackie Brown came from. it was a good read and alot like the movie. its about a flight attendant that gets busted transporting coke into the USA. she strikes a deal with the ATF to set up a gun smuggler that she knows... what happens.. ? read it and find out!
Pretty Good Elmore Leonard.......2007-07-02
Rum Punch is a pretty good representation of Elmore Leonard's style. The story focuses on a flight attendant attempting to bring half a million dollars into the country, and then in true Leonard style, all the colorful characters (some on the side of law, others not) who try to gets their hands on the money.
The book features some strong dialogue, particularly when the gun runner Ordell Robbie is speaking. Another strong element is the way that Leonard easily switches perspective--from the flight attendant to the gun runner to an ex-con to a bails bondsman. While the book is good, it is not on the same level of Leonard's Get Shorty. I think the book's one flaw is that while the twists are good and the story rings true, there is nothing particularly unique about the story.
The book was made into a movie titled Jackie Brown, which despite changing the title and locale (from South Florida to Los Angeles), is surprisingly faithful to the book. The movie is okay, but the book is better.
couldn't get into it.......2007-01-23
I enjoyed the film based on this novel, but couldn't get into reading it. I don't know why, maybe it's just me. Maybe because the characters in the movie were changed too much...I don't know...but I just lost track of the book less than half way through.
One of Leonard's best.......2007-01-06
I'm a big fan of Elmore Leonard and Rum Punch is one of his best.
The plot: Jackie Burke, a down-on-her luck airline attendant is forced to help authorities nail gunrunner Ordell Robbie after she's caught sneaking cash into the country for him. Of course in an Elmore Leonard novel, double crossing is the name of the game and Jackie, with the help of bail bondsman Max Cherry, devises a plan to take the money and run.
This novel has everything we come to expect from a Leonard novel. Great dialogue, memorable characters, and a plot full of zigs and zags. The cops are a little shady and the criminals are as likely to kill one another as they are to kill the good guys. Rum Punch is an unpredictable, rollicking ride; sometimes laugh out loud funny, always entertaining. A great read, from cover to cover.
OK.......2006-04-17
I was a little surprised early on when I realised I'd seen this book as the movie, `Jackie Brown'. Although it started differently, the giveaway was the description of the bail bonds office - they really caught the feel of the place in the movie. There were a few changes here and there - the white Jackie Burke of the book became the black Jackie Brown in the movie, and Max the bondsman is more central, but the flavour of the thing was all here, and the movie was pretty faithful. I wasn't reading it as a foil for the movie, but I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more or less if I hadn't seen Tarantino's spin on it.
Max was likable, the characters, settings and plot all capably done. Still, nothing really soared for me here either - there are other crime writers (Hammett, Perez-Revert?, Chandler, McCall Smith) I'll look for first.
Book Description
'Twas Honest old Noah first planted the Vine
And mended his morals by drinking its Wine.
--from a drinking song by Benjamin Franklin
There were, Peter Thompson notes, some one hundred and fifty synonyms for inebriation in common use in colonial Philadelphia and, on the eve of the Revolution, just as many licensed drinking establishments. Clearly, eighteenth-century Philadelphians were drawn to the tavern. In addition to the obvious lure of the liquor, taverns offered overnight accommodations, meals, and stabling for visitors. They also served as places to gossip, gamble, find work, make trades, and gather news.
In Rum Punch and Revolution, Thompson shows how the public houses provided a setting in which Philadelphians from all walks of life revealed their characters and ideas as nowhere else. He takes the reader into the cramped confines of the colonial bar room, describing the friendships, misunderstandings and conflicts which were generated among the city's drinkers and investigates the profitability of running a tavern in a city which, until independence, set maximum prices on the cost of drinks and services in its public houses.
Taverngoing, Thompson writes, fostered a sense of citizenship that influenced political debate in colonial Philadelphia and became an issue in the city's revolution. Opinionated and profoundly undeferential, taverngoers did more than drink; they forced their political leaders to consider whether and how public opinion could be represented in the counsels of a newly independent nation.

TALE OF A TRUE NOVEL.......2000-03-23
Ceylon Barclay could not have recognized, in the late 1980's, that he was about to become a novelist the hard way, having lived an exotic adventure he burned to tell the world. But the one to get burned-despite a signed contract and high-up U.S. promises-was himself. RED RUM PUNCH details Barclay's investment in the Carribean isle Grenada by invitation of our State Department, heartily seconded by Grenada itself, after the Communists were defeated in our 1983 invasion. The deal: Barclay was to buy River Antoine Estate, a sugar cane plantation, and refurbish its rum distillery while providing destitute slave-descendants with jobs, adequate diet, and a strong dose of American know-how. Never mind that Grenada's rum "technology" pre-dated the American Rervolution. Barclay, with hands-on fervor plus plentiful investment money, was to transform the 350 year old estate into a tourist mecca, a tropical Williamsburg. Furthermore, shares in the new corporation were to become worker owned within 15 years so dirt-poor islanders could become self-employed and self-supporting. In his preface, Barclay writes, "Grenada made sense. So did River Antoine. Both were small, manageable. America was a powerhouse, market meaty and capital flush. President Reagan's political goals in Grenada and River Antoine's rejuvenation became a last link in our reforged foreign policy: shifting Grenada from the bulky crawl of Communism to the oiled overdrive of Capitalism." After developing detailed feasibility studies and following three first-hand visits, Barclay sold his Colorado businesses, his Carlos O'Brien restaurant chain, and various other pieces of real estate. His life savings went into his share of the deal; funds which were to be matched by the U.S. within 14 days of contract signing. What happened next-Barclay's betrayal-is the real tale of RED RUM PUNCH. How Barclay, after getting the plantation running on his own dollars, was doublecrossed then ousted from Grenada, thrown into jail and roughed over; and soon after found himself facing (unarmed, and with his defenceless wife), a furious mob of blacks-men and women both-waving razor-sharp machetes. How to tell a story with so many angles and considerations; so many details both personal and political? Barclay had a hard-scrabble raising in Maine-long on Yankee gumption but short on comfort. Early-on he learned the value of hard, self-motivated work, while grasping all the education he could. The River Antoine experience almost defied telling. Yet it demanded to be told. After three years of intense effort, the book was born, a blend of Barclay's political acumen and down-home sensibility. Spun over 350 pages, including 8 pages of photographs, the book's themes include man against nature, (the jungle, the climate, the bats) man against man, (impoverished natives versa glib leaders) and man against himself: Midway through his ordeal, Barclay was diagnosed (wrongly, as later proved) with multiple sclerosis, a progressive disease threatening to make him wheelchair bound in 5 years. Readers will enjoy the contrast between Barclay's New England life and his sojourn in Grenda, green with sugar cane: From his view of New Hampshire's Mt. Washington, a famous chunk of granite, to Grenada's Mt. Saint Catherine, a lofty, extinct volcano whose stony lava spilled all the way down to the fields of River Antoine. (The estate's small lake was located in a flooded crater.) Weave in the ever-present color barrier among whites, mulattoes, and blacks; hear the lilting patois of people who are one moment "jump up, hug up" friendly, and who in the next moment turn to volatile anger, unable to "Jes hol' strain" and you will approach the scope of this book. Such special details make RED RUM PUNCH unforgettable. The "Red" in the title refers to Communists, of course, and the "rum punch" both to the dark rum drink and to the "punch" that almost knocked Barclay out. But who-unless intimate with rum distilling-could know that "de bat poo-poo" gives River Antoine brand its special, individual flavor? (It was quite raw!) That's a detail Barclay had planned to change! Or who could guess that teenage girls, almost none married, are scorned as 'mules' if they haven't borne a baby by age 15; considered sterile and so pitied? The finish to RED RUM PUNCH, in a real sense, has not yet happened: Not as long as people on such a beautiful island are being held back by selfish government agendas, (both theirs and ours)which promise help and then abandon them. Barclay has not given up. A citizen of the world. his current business ventures range from China, to Nicaragua, to Russia. As for Grenada, he promises, "Yes, I'll return again. Book in hand!"

beloved warrior.......2007-09-14
haven't started this book yet; but after i bought it, read that it is #3 - but no where in the book tells me the names of books #1 and #2. i would like to get them and read them in order. can someone tell me the names of the other books and did they like them. i collect patricia potter books and would like to read them in order. thanks
Lost interest in this one.......2005-08-01
This was my first book by Patricia Potter and it is one of the only books that I didn't finish, I got half way through and had to put it down. I was disappointed because the book got such great reviews here. I rarely read a book that I do not enjoy, but this was one. I am reading another book from Patricia Potter, hopefully I enjoy this one more.
Drags on too long.......2005-07-05
So this is basically a Scarlet Pimpernel story: man has a secret identity helping people escape unjust torture; woman marries man and has complete contempt for his foppish persona while secretly admiring his heroic, exciting alter-ego. And oh, yeah, that's also the basic premise behind Superman and Spiderman too.
So the story isn't exactly original, and the first 100 or so pages of this book just beat the plot into your head until you just want something to happen already, for heaven's sake! I have a feeling the author could have cut out almost half of this book and had a pretty decent Harlequin Historical.
Suggestion: The Scarlet Pimpernel is a much better, more exciting book.
Very Impressive.......2005-03-11
I was captured from page one by Rory Forbes. This book was the best of the series, with DIAMOND KING next, and HEART QUEEN not even in the running as far as I'm concerned. That book wasn't good. Anyway, Rory and Bethia made for a great duo, their covert work helped many and not once did we lose sight of the fact that these two loved each other. Well done.
A Memorable Story.......2005-03-10
With an historic backdrop and wonderful characters, this book is an all-time favorite, unmatched in excellence even by Ms Potter's other books. Rory Forbes is the sort of character who will stay in a reader's memory for a long while, as will Bethia. It was such a rough and tragic time in history to be alive but they survived, although it's hard to believe they would have had too many peaceful years further on in their marriage, given the unrest of the eighteeneth century.

Book Description
Far in the future, 60,000 light-years from Earth, a loose confederacy of Terran exiles is locked in battle with the enigmatic Protoss and the ruthless Zerg Swarm. Each species struggles to ensure its own survival among the stars in a war that will herald the beginning of mankind's greatest chapter -- or foretell its violent, bloody end.
Danny Liberty was a good reporter...too good. When his investigations struck too close to the heart of the corrupt Terran Confederacy, he faced a simple choice: continue his current series of exposés, or take a hazardous new assignment covering the Marines on the front lines of the Koprulu Sector. It didn't take him long to decide....
Behind the attacks of the Zerg and the Protoss lies the story of a lifetime, but every piece of information blurs the mystery further. Thrown into the middle of a war where the outcome will determine mankind's very survival, the only thing that Danny Liberty knows for sure is that the only person he can trust to keep him alive is himself.

The BEST of the 3 book series.......2007-09-07
I wont say to much but for the most part this book is very good. This is definately the best of the 3 book series. I would give this book a 4 1/2 if it was an option but since I can't I give it 5 stars.
Much better then I thought it would be .......2007-03-27
I am probably the only guy who has played all the Blizzard games but never got around to playing Starcraft. From what I see in this book I am have to change my Philosophy. Mike Liberty is a reporter who makes some enemies and has to go be an embedded reporter with a unit of Space Marines. He arrives just in time to be attacked by the Zerg and he then proceeds to magically be carried along through the major events of the game. Reads very fast.
All in all not a bad little adaptation and much better then what currently passes for Star Wars and Star Trek fiction these days.
Just as good as the Game.......2007-03-22
I first read the back of the book once i saw it in the store and was immediatly hooked. The book adds tons of depth to the characters like Mengsk, Duke, Raynor and Kerrigan while throwing in some new people who add to the realness of the story. The ending is to die for and in some ways, it pretty funny while still leaving some hope for the future.
While reading the book I found myself relating to Liberty more and more and i think that most people will when reading this gripping novel
An exciting sci-fi story for the non-game player.......2006-08-20
As I understand it, StarCraft as a game came first, and this book came after. So I'm not real clear on the purpose of the book. Was it to give those StarCraft fans additional information on the characters, locations, and plots within the game? Was it just meant to sustain the interest in all that is StarCraft-related? Was it meant to let parents know that those young gamers could also read? Or was it meant to simply flesh out the story?
Who cares!
Between the gross Zerg and the planet destroying Protoss, and the corrupt Confederacy and the rebels, potential adventures abound.
As a non-player of StarCraft (the computer game), I found Liberty's Crusade to be an interesting and engaging sci-fi tale. The dynamics of the characters had the reader rethinking who the good guys and bad guys were... aliens and humans alike. This book, and the story line, cry for a continuation of the story. Since this one is labeled "StarCraft, Book 1," I'll assume there are additional books out there. I assume the StarCraft game continues the story as well.
I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Random Review.......2006-01-11
This is a great novel and I think it should be read by all science fiction readers and StarCraft fans alike. The character depth is great, each one is unique. Also, the story is written very well. The best feature in the story had to be the amount of morals. Almost every action in this story has a moral and the author potrays them very well. Not to mention how the author talks about the many sides of good and evil and that they can be classified more than just good and evil. So overall I would say this was a execellent book.

In a step by step chapter by chapter easy read method the Stoops, through personal experience and real life couple examples, share just what prayer can do to make a mediocre marriage stronger and a vibrant one TRIUMPHANT. In plain every day language David and Jan share that prayer is a committment that is sometimes hard to achieve in this fast paced go-go society we live in. But for those who have taken the six week "step off the curb" challenge to pray together they have found resounding success in the 10 areas of intimacy: emotional, intellectual, social, recreational, creative, crisis, work, conflict, physical, and spiritual. This is a must read for all couples who are looking for more out of their marriages and greater closeness to their God given partner. You will not be disappointed!
