Book Description

Edward is nearly four years old when he begins his slow, painful withdrawal from the world. For those who love him -- his father, Jack; his pregnant mother, Rachel; his younger brother, Matt -- the transformation of this happy, intelligent firstborn into a sleepless, feral stranger is a devastating blow, one that will send shockwaves through every nook and cranny of family life.

A Wild Ride Up the Cupboards is the story of Edward's descent into autism, and Rachel and Jack's struggle to sustain their marriage under this unanticipated strain. Threaded through the novel, too, is the tale of Rachel's late uncle Mickey, who may have suffered from a similar disorder during a time when society's notions of parenting, pediatrics, and psychology were dramatically different from today's. As Rachel delves into her own family history in search of answers, flashbacks to Mickey's life afford moving insights into both the nature of childhood trauma and the coping mechanisms that families employ. Carefully crafted and deeply entertaining, A Wild Ride Up the Cupboards reveals the author's remarkable gift for language and offers a striking exploration of domestic life that will resonate with readers everywhere.

"Edward is nearly four years old when he begins his slow, painful withdrawal from the world. For those who love him -- his father, Jack, and mother, Rachel, pregnant with their third child -- the transformation of their happy, intelligent firstborn into a sleepless, feral stranger is a devastating blow, one that brings enormous ramifications not just for Edward and his parents, but also for their younger son, Matt, and soon-to-be-born daughter. A Wild Ride Up the Cupboards follows this nuclear family as Rachel and Jack try to come to terms with their son's descent into autism (or something like it) and struggle to sustain their marriage under this unanticipated strain. Threaded through the novel, too, is the story of Rachel's deceased uncle Mickey, who may have suffered from a similar disorder at a time when parenting, pediatrics, and ideas about child psychology were entirely different from today's. As Rachel delves into her own family history in search of answers, flashbacks to Mickey's life afford moving insight into the nature of childhood disorders and the coping mechanisms of different families. A spellbinding, brilliantly nuanced portrait of a marriage and a family, this compelling drama also poses provocative, real-life questions: How much should a mother sacrifice for her children? How much intervention is too much? When do parents' ambitions for their offspring become counterproductive, even destructive? Who should decide what is best for the child? Is it ever worth sacrificing a marriage for a child? A Wild Ride Up the Cupboards is a carefully crafted, compulsively readable, emotional page-turner that reveals a remarkable gift for language and storytelling and enormous insight into the complexities and dilemmas of domestic life and parenthood. It is a striking exploration of love, faith, and sacrifice that will resonate with readers everywhere. "

This book is fabulous! Anyone that has a child that struggles with learning, development, etc... should read this.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate dysfunction.......2006-12-09

I read this book and "Curious Incident of the Dog In the Nightime" to fulfill a requirement for a diversity class I'm taking. I was the only person in the class who liked "Wild Ride" better than "Curious Dog." As a special educator, I watch and listen as families wade through their lives with a disabled child. It can be messy, complicated, and exhausting, as well as vibrant and rich. For me, this book tapped into all of those things. As I listened to the rest pick apart this book and learned how disappointed they were with the mother, it became apparent to me that, what the group DIDN'T like, was the emotion it sparked within them. I found "Curious Dog," to be somewhat informative for the reader who doesn't know much about autism, but I found "Wild Ride" to be much more 3-dimensional. In all, both were very good books, but with very different perspectives.

4 out of 5 stars An Atypical Child and his family.......2006-09-04

Though a lot of reviewers have called Edward, the central character in WILD RIDE, autistic he is better described as an atypical child with some autistic characteristics. Bauer does a great job describing the impact a child who is very different from others has on his whole family and particularly his parents. WILD RIDE is especially interesting because Edward's mother (Rachel, the narrator of the book) includes researching family history in an attempt to help Edward. The story of her maternal uncle Micky's difficult life in the mid 50's is a compelling story in itself. Rachel also looks in to her adopted husband, Jack's, birth family. Jack, himself, displays some unusual characteristics as he has an uncanny ability to heal, problems with employment and authority and just an unconventional outlook on life. While this is a generally well written book there are spots where time shifts are handled in a confusing manner but a bit of rereading makes all clear.

4 out of 5 stars compelling narrative..........2006-01-18

i don't know anything about autism but i know a lot about the depths of marital love between a man and woman -- and how the demands of their children can force them apart...the story is compelling and very well written -- a pleasure to find a book unpeppered with four-letter words and steamy sex...but, i will always wish there had been a happier ending...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on dealing with autism.......2006-01-02

This book is brilliant in that it deals with everything a parent goes through in dealing with a child with autism - dealing with denial, trying odds way to remedy the situation, coping with their own depression and panic, going to doctors and more doctors, hurting other people in the process

and

finally giving in to acceptance.

It was a wonderful book and the writing exceptional. I got a small glimpse into the world of autism and how people on all sides react to it.

I recommend it highly.

I didn't have high hopes for this book but I couldn't put it down! A great read, with nice historical details thrown in.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful and erotic..........2005-08-17

I've had this book on my to-read pile for almost a year and finally decided to give it a whirl. The Bookseller's Daughter sucked me in and didn't let go until its final page. This is the story of Marie-Laure Vernet, a young, passionate, bookish daughter of a bookshop owner who has a strong, profound connection with a book smuggler who turns out to be an aristocrat. She tends to his wounded leg when he enters her shop and meets him again after her father dies, loses the bookshop and is forced to work as a maid for an aristocratic family. The attraction is undeniable and Viscomte Joseph d'Auvers-Raimond decides to take her into his room every night and pass her off as his mistress so as to protect her from his father and brother, who cannot resist a pretty maid. At first, their nights together are nothing more than intellectual discussions about literature, politics and Joseph regaling Marie-Laure with tales of his adventures as a roguish libertine. But then their nights become passionate ones of sensual, erotic sex and development of loving feelings for one another. However, things soon get in the way -- marriage, aristocratic titles, murder and revenge being just a few of their many obstacles. There are various twists throughout the novel.

I agree with the reviewers that say that Marie-Laure and Joseph spend most of the novel apart. I did not mind that bit because it gave the story and its main characters seem like star-crossed lovers, which is refreshing in a romance novel. After all, we all more or less know that the protagonists will end up together, why not add a different flavor? I loved their love letters -- Joseph's erotic ones as well as Marie-Laure's intimate and loving ones. The letters were indeed romantic. As for the sex scenes, I thought they were very well written and scrumptiously erotic. The reviewer who said that the sex scenes were vulgar, trashy and full of F words must have read a different book. Then again, perhaps I am so used to reading books in which the authors don't bother to sugarcoat their sex scenes with G-rated euphemisms and instead choose a more uninhibited, bolder approach to erotic romance that the scenes in this book seem incredibly mild in comparison. The scenes are sensual, erotic and smoldering at times. The protagonists are great and Rosenthal did a wonderful job differentiating the commoners from the aristocrats and their friction during those times. The backdrop of France before the French Revolution was also great. However, there are some blatant anachronisms in this novel that were difficult to overlook. And the dialogue in the story sounded too modern at times, a common problem with historical romances. All in all, The Bookseller's Daughter is a curl-up-under-the-covers book that you'll want to give a whirl. I recommend it most highly...

3 out of 5 stars mediocre.......2005-04-24

While I enjoyed this book, I found it clumsy at times. In the first half, the two main characters have very little interaction with each other on-screen, which sometimes made it feel like nothing was really happening. Also, the story had a common problem of historical romances in which the characters are thoroughly (almost stereotypically) modern and don't fit their historical context. Both heroine and her love interest seemed a bit too uptight to be true, in their own ways (not sexually, though, the sex was all right). There were some small but jarring anachronisms in the setting, too. Otherwise, it was kind of a fun book.

3 out of 5 stars An average read.......2004-04-04

I liked the setting of the book and Joseph was a refreshingly diffrent hero. I however had problems with Marie Laure's characterisation and her quest for freedom and independence towards the end.
I also dont like novels where the hero and heroine are separated for a long period of time, and in this book they did not have any scenes together for almost a hundred pages in between! Hence the three stars.

5 out of 5 stars Creative and originial.......2004-02-25

I really liked this story about Marie-Laure and Joseph. Joseph is the second son of a duc and, due to past scandal, is at the monetary mercy of his family. Marie Laure works for his family, but is pretty enough to have gained the attention of Joseph's father and brother. In order to protect Marie-Laure, as she once saved his life, Joseph pretends to have already claimed her 'personal services.'

This is an original story because it is about two people who have to deal with the whims of fate. Although he is an aristocrat, he isn't powerful enough to save himself, but he does his best to save Marie-Laure. Marie-Laure may be powerless against some of the things fate has thrown at her, but she isn't a doormat.

Overall, this was a passionate, compelling story without some of the convetions overused by some romance authors.

          Book Description

In this eloquent and impassioned book, defense expert Fred Iklé predicts a revolution in national security that few strategists have grasped; fewer still are mindful of its historic roots. We are preoccupied with suicide bombers, jihadist terrorists, and rogue nations producing nuclear weapons, but these menaces are merely distant thunder that foretells the gathering storm.

It is the dark side of technological progress that explains this emerging crisis. Globalization guarantees the spread of new technologies, whether beneficial or destructive, and this proliferation reaches beyond North Korea, Iran, and other rogue states. Our greatest threat is a cunning tyrant gaining possession of a few weapons of mass destruction. His purpose would not be to destroy landmarks, highjack airplanes, or attack railroad stations. He would annihilate a nation's government from within and assume dictatorial power. The twentieth century offers vivid examples of tyrants who have exploited major national disasters by rallying violent followers and intimidating an entire nation.

To explain how we have become so vulnerable, Iklé turns to history. Some 250 years ago, science was freed from political and religious constraints, causing a cultural split in which one part of our culture remained animated by religion and politics while the other became guided by science. Since then, technological progress and the evolving political order march to different drummers. Science advances at an accelerating pace while religion and politics move along a zigzag course. This divergence will widen and endanger the survival of all nations.

Drawing on his experience as a Washington insider, Iklé outlines practical measures that could readily be implemented to help us avert the worst disaster.

Plot: Obiwan is strugguling to capture an escaping prisoner. But his master isn't really on his side. His master and everyone else don't believe that the prisoner escaped. I liked the story because it was exciting and kept me reading. I like the futuristic technology and hope to create something, like the swords they used, someday.

4 out of 5 stars A Certain Point Of View.......2002-09-05

I realize that a number of people did not enjoy this book. I, however, did. I supose that it all depends on what you are looking to get out of the book. If you are looking for character developement, realationships, and interaction, as I was, then you will be very pleased. However, if you are looking for an outstanding plot with twists and complexity, then you might be dissapointed. (Let's keep in mind that these are still children's books; once I admitted that, I think I enjoyed them more, because I did not expect as much.)
This book had what I was looking for, namely, the final eveolution of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship as Jedi and good friends. The story itself was a bit lacking, but I thought that if I was going to read it as an adult and demand the satisfaction of an adult book from it, then maybe the book shouldn't have to do all of the work: that, as an adult reading a book written by an adult, I should be able to read between the lines and get a feeling for the more advaced themes of the book.(I once read an interview where Juse Watson admitted that adults really did have to read betweent the lines with the JA books, because she had to target them to kids.
When closly examined, The Threat From Within had many mature and serious aspects. For example, the characters reflected upon past actions and experiences and applied them to the present situation; in this way we see them change. This is a classics technique in character developement, which brings together all of the books and makes the character's past more real. It was comforting to know that experiences such as Obi-Wan's leaving of the Jedi and people such as Talh did not fade out of existence, as things tend to do in other series. Another serious issue was that the kids didnt know when to stop playing pranks. They started out good, but ended up divided, as on Medlinda/Daan. And, I must point out that history DOES repeat itself, so the plot was all the more true-to-life for being similar.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, yet a not so good way to end the series.......2002-08-01

I love the Star Wars Jedi Apprentice Books. I have been reading them ever since they were published. Although I must admit this is a good and well written book I would have liked to see this series end better. I was hoping perhaps it would lead us into Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and judging from the cover I bought the book believing that Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan would be forced to fight each other, yet what it turns out to be is just that they are just practicing their light saber skills. I was dissapointed but I cant deny that I enjoyed reading the book. It shows Qui-Gon starting to really look at Obi-Wan not as a child anymore but rather as a fellow Jedi Knight. For the first time we see Obi-Wan really take charge of a mission. This book was pretty good, exciting, and full of suspense. I just wish this wasnt the book that ended the series.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful while it lasted.......2002-07-12

The Jedi Apprentice series is amazingly gripping, always makeing the reader come back for more. Alas this time there is no more to come back to, yet remarkably Jude Watson, again left her audence with a feeling of fofillment; the relationship of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon finaly seem to fit. If you are looking for a thrilling, heart-stopping, and even possibly learning somthing about your self kind of book. Look no further. J.W. Thank's for the great read.

          4 out of 5 stars A worthy ending to a spectacular series.......2002-04-21

First of all, I really enjoyed this book. Sure, at times the writing style was a little bland and the supporting characters a bit formulaic, but for me, the amount of emotional development in the main characters of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, and the quickly moving, descriptive plot completely made up for it. Many found this book in particular too reminiscent of earlier ones, particularly the whole Melida/Daan disaster. But I thought that having Obi-Wan reflect back on the horrors he saw there, and the huge rift between himself and Qui-Gon back then, made the similarities haunting rather than tedious, and added a heightened sense of drama to the overall story. It also showed how much Obi-Wan's matured over the past few years, in his willingness to never let anything like that happen again. Anyway, in this book Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are sent on a mission to Vorzyd 4, a planet on the edge of war with it's neighbor, Vorzyd 5, whom they are certain are the culprits of the resent terrorist attacks on their cities. As soon as they get there however, it's clear that everything is not as it seems... At the same time, Qui-Gon is beginning to become aware of the fact that Obi-Wan is growing up, and that the time they have left together is short, and this pains him terribly. Anyway, this is definitely a must for those of you who've been following the series. There is one more book after this, another split "special edition" adventure that features first Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, and then later Obi-Wan and a young Anakin. Here's to that one being even better!

There's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in. These words by the poet Leonard Cohen could aptly describe this book, which takes history as a witness to the exceptional nature of Zionism in Jewish history. It explains many points of discord between the political ideology of Zionism and what most people consider Judaism. It also shows how Jewish traditional conscience offers a hope for the solution of the Middle East crisis. The conflicts in Israel/Palestine acquire a different meaning when seen in the context of Jewish opposition to Zionism. This book has attracted Jewish and non-Jewish readers alike who find this story inspiring in today’s world of mobile identities.

I found the book, reportedly to speak of Judaism and Jews as a whole sorely lacking in major areas. One was the fact that nearly all, if not all, of the voices and commentary contained in the book came from only one part of world Jewry, Ashkenaz.
The fact is that great rabbis from all over the Sephardic and Edot HaMizrach world view Zionism favourably, these voices seemed to be completely absent from the book. When the author makes arguements in the name of Judaism and selectively quotes from a small part of world Jewry, surely the nature of the book is severely compromised.
The fact is there has never been a scholar or Rabbi of repute from outside of the Ashkenazi world who has a theological problem with Zionism and the State of Israel. This stands in stark contrast to the author's views on how Judaism views Zionism. Without the views of the "other" Jews, this work shamelessly sounds out important voices to any work on religious responses to Zionism.

I spent most of my life as an active Zionist (but not a religious Jew.) Once I became an observant Jew, I gradually found myself being turned off to zionism, but didn't realize why. Professor Rabkin's book filled in a lot of the "blanks" for me, and made me realize I am not alone.

It angers me that the zionist state claims to speak for all Jews, including me. No one gave them that right, I certainly didn't, and I feel very betrayed and deceived by zionism...especially in light of the zionist collaboration with the Nazis, under whom some of my family members perished. Professor Rabkin goes into this somewhat in his excellent book also. Many things in this book will enrage you about zionist activities, and if you are a Jew with faith in Hashem, you will see just how much of a modern day golden calf zionism really is.

Thank G-d for the Chasidim or I would feel totally isolated in the Jewish community due to my new stance. Thank you, Professor Rabkin, for a much-needed, well written book, which is easily understood by both Jew and Gentile alike.

1 out of 5 stars Sorry, But It Was The Jewish People Who Built Israel, Not Rabkin's "Zionists".......2006-12-07

Rabkin builds up a strawman that he calls "Zionism" in order to justify
his opposition to Israel. He posits a violently anti-religious movement that sought to rebel against G-d and which all the Rabbis opposed ideologically. Unfortunately, this is a very superficial description of the true historical record. It turns out that in reality, mass aliyah was first proposed by both the Hasidic followers of the Ba'al Shem Tov and the Vilna Gaon in the 18th century. True, there are those who claim, like the Satmar Rav, Rav Yoel Teitelbaum that mass aliyah is forbidden by the "3 oaths" mentioned in the Talmud, Tractate Ketubot, but we see that many, actually most scholars have refuted this. Regarding the supposedly
anti-religious nature of the Zionism, yes, there is a branch that was and is still militantly anti-religious, but there is on the other hand, a very religious element, too, and it has been there from the beginnings of modern political Zionism in the 19th century. The famous Netziv from Volozhin (one of the top leaders of the traditional Orthodox Jewish community in the late 19th century and head of the famed Volozhin Yeshiva) was a member of Hovevei Zion, a proto-Zionist movement that included non-religious people. A famous photograph of a meeting of the Mizrachi religious Zionist movement in Warsaw around the year 1900 shows rows of bearded, black-coated Rabbis. Thus it is UNTRUE to claim that ALL the traditional Orthodox rabbinical leadership was anti-Zionist. The fact of the matter is that most of this group (which later organized itself as the Agudat Israel movement) had mixed feelings, supporting building the Jewish community in Eretz Israel (the Land of Israel) but worried about
the anti-religious nature of many of the leaders of the Zionist movement.
Agudat Israel later agreed, upon the establishment of the State of Israel,
to sit in its parliament and participate in national and social issues. The large majority of Haredi (Ultra-Orthodox) Jews vote in the elections. This does not mean that they subscribe to all the values of the Zionist movement, there is a great debate going on as to how involved religious Jews of this type should get involved, but the large majority care about Israel, work for its security and support it in the international arena.
Rabkin claims that "really" these people are anti-Zionists (I would define them as non-Zionists since many don't believe the all Jews are REQUIRED to live in Israel and because they oppose military service for various reasons) but they have been "bought-off" by the Zionist establishment. Well, it has been discovered that the spokesman for a radical religious anti-Zionist movement was on Yasser Arafat's payroll for years, so we can just as easily claim that the anti-Zionists have been
paid off. In any event, this claim takes away any matter of choice from
people, claiming that there support for Israel is "really" from base motives, saying that the people really are "stupid". That is why I say to Rabkin and to the current post-Zionist leadership of Israel, that it was the JEWISH PEOPLE who built Israel, not the "Zionist Leadership" of the time, and it belongs to the Jewish people, not one particular political movement. After the Holocaust (which refutes Rabkin's claim that anti-Semitism is due to Israel's policies) the Jewish people voted with their feet that they wanted to return to their ancient homeland, Eretz Israel, and the built it and continue to build it today. Any Jew who goes to synagogue and listens to the weekly Torah portion sees that the Torah is enfused with love of Eretz Israel (e.g. the detailed description of Avraham buying the burial place in the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hevron) so the Jewish people have been absorbing this for millenia, and the desire to return flows from this, not Rabkin's imaginary conspiracy of "anti-religious Zionist rebels". The large majority of Jews in Israel reject Rabkin's claim that "Zionism replaced Judaism with nationalism" and identify themselves as Jews, regardless of their level of religious observance, and the fact is that religious observance of the average Jew in Israel is much higher than those outside of Israel. Knowledge of Hebrew, the language of the Bible and Misha is univesal making these works accessible to everyone, unlike outside Israel and that Jewish religious life and intense Torah study are undergoing their greatest revival in 2000 years, IN SPITE of Rabkin's claim that the Zionist state is suppodedly dedicated to eradicating these things.
Yes, there is an ongoing debate in the religious world about the nature of the relationship of religious community of Israel to the (not yet religious) state apparatus, but reading this polemic is not going to give an accurate picture of this.

5 out of 5 stars Foundational book about Judiasm and the state.......2006-11-02

This is a groundbreaking book, as an american jew, I strongly resent my religious and cultural heritage being co-opted by zionism. This book precisely lays out what is exactly at stake ---- the very heart of a jewish identity. The typical tribalist zionist is most threatened by such an analysis because this book deals in-depth, with the dirty secret of zionism, its profound antipathy toward the core jewish traditions. I have read many great and not-so-great books on the middle east, but this book is different, it places the whole zionist program in a very different light, only partially discussed in other writings, such as Original Sins: Reflections on the History of Zionism and Israel by Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi. Any too easy dismissal of this truly important book can only be considered fatuous, at best. Perhaps the most important concept to consider is that Rabkin thinks that jews have persisted over time because of values that transcend the state, nations come and go, Israel is a crude attempt to subvert this and to artificially establish a jewish state in a place and way that goes against almost all jewish values. Indeed, Rabkin asks what is the thing now that makes Israel a jewish state? Is it religion, a lifestyle, a history, a culture, etc. He answers in the negative, the thing holding it together as a state is a common place nationalist quest, not unlike any other on the planet, nothing special here and an effort doomed to ultimate failure. The last time something like this was tried, the Jewish presence in Palestine was essentially destroyed by the Romans.
Do buy this book, religious or not, zionist or not, if you are intellectually open minded, this could be a watershed for you.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but problematic.......2006-09-16

There are actually two strains of Jewish opposition to Zionism and perhaps a third. Firstly there is the religious objection. Zionism is not based on Torah, it is secular and deocratic, communist sometimes and gives women and gays equal rights, and Arabs and Muslims and Christians. These are not Torah values neccesarily. It doesnt invisage a state governed by Torah sages, such as the chief rabbi and a Sanhedrin and rebuilt temple. Also it is not ordained by the arrival of Messiah.

The second objection is from the left wing jews who simply object to nationalism and beleive in assimilation.

The third objection was from conservative loyal Jews who felt they would be expelled if Zionism suceeded, they would be seen as disloyal and they would be forced to go to Israel.

This book concentrates mostly on the Satmar and Neturei Karta varieties of anti-zionism which although it has old roots is more a modern phenomenon, that links itself with palestinian and left wingers, even gay rights activists, anything to condemn Israel. But these religious people are themselves radicals, like Hamas, they oppose the secualr jewish state as Bin Laden opposes the monarchies and secular arab regimes and hence it is strange to see left wing literature supporting religious extremism, the anetham of liberalism and human rights. But alas that is the truth behind this publication. This could have been much more but instead it was less.

Ever wonder if you're being told the truth about certain troubling matters? If you're starting to feel concerned, maybe even a little helpless, and kind of sick inside about the current conditon of our culture (you know, all the school shootings, poor role models who make big money, political lies, foul language, pornography, T.V. violence, drug abuse, child abuse, physical abuse, unwanted kids, unwanted marriages, and unwanted general bad behavior), then you need to get this book. It has some intriguing answers, even THE answer, to questions like, "What can I do?" and "What went wrong?" and "Who or what can fix it?" Timothy Buchanan does a masterful job of leading his reader on a personal quest for discovering the truth about all these troubling matters, or just "the truth" in general. The book is written in a clear, concise, and powerful manner, even giving specific directions about how to tell if what you're seeing, reading, or hearing about in the media, or from others, is the genuine thing. In other words, is it truth with a capital "T" or just something concocted by someone to trick you? After reading this book, you won't need to wonder anymore.
