Book Description
At last, the rest of the story.
Epilogue: A concluding part added to a literary work.
There was something about this man that was out of the ordinary, something almost familiar about him.
Sunlight angled down and caught the right side of his face, caught the long gray hair parted in the middle and brushed back along the top and sides. The sea wind came up and blew his hair, and he reached to push it back from his face, pulled an orange suspender higher on his shoulder, adjusted the leather Swiss Army knife case on his belt. The sun passed behind a cloud, and he fell into shadow for a few seconds before sunlight again came on him. She experienced an involuntary shudder and had a powerful urge to walk outside and talk with the man.
And later:
He was glad he had come. It had not been a mistake. Here, in the old bridge, he felt a kind of serenity, and he bathed in the feeling and came quiet within himself. At that moment, he knew this place would be his home ground, the place where his ashes would someday drift out over Middle River. He hoped some of his dust would become one with the bridge and the land, and that some might wash far downstream and into larger rivers and then into all the seas he had crossed on crowded troop ships or night jets to somewhere.
--From A Thousand Country Roads
Ten years and twelve million copies after the first printing of The Bridges of Madison County, Robert James Waller brings to a poignant conclusion his story of the love affair between a wandering photographer and the conventional wife of an Iowa farmer. This stirring conclusion is for everyone who loved The Bridges of Madison County.
In A Thousand Country Roads, Robert Kincaid initially finds himself with little but memories; memories of a lonely existence lived mostly on the road and memories of Francesca Johnson, the woman whose passion he stirred so briefly and with such power.
So, with his memories pushing him, searching for something undefined, something to give meaning to the rest of his life, Kincaid takes to the road again in what becomes a journey of discovery and surprise.
With his dog Highway beside him in an old truck named Harry, Kincaid begins a long winding run back to Roseman Bridge in Madison County, Iowa, returning to the place of his great love affair.
Living her own solitary life, Francesca still visits Roseman Bridge and reflects on her days with Robert Kincaid. Cherishing the memory of the strange, wandering man who changed her world, she vows to search for him.
On the expedition he calls Last Time, Kincaid wanders through Oregon, northern California eastward to the Dakotas, and on to Iowa. Along the way, a chance encounter with a woman from his distant past reveals another dimension of his life that he could not have imagined.
Finally, in a Seattle bar called Shortys, where saxophonist Nighthawk Cummings still plays on Tuesday nights, Kincaid turns in his chair, looking inward and outward at the same time, and smiles at what he sees sitting before him.
And so it comes, the ultimate loner finds he is not as alone as he once believed.

book & seller review.......2005-09-03
My experience with this seller was excellent. Received my book in a few days in perfect "new" condition. So far, book is excellent also. Have not finished reading it yet.
Seller is definitely proved to be top rating.
A disastrous epilogue to an excellent story.......2003-11-28
It would have been much better if this book had never been written. The story in this volume takes place in the time period after the wandering photographer (Robert Kincaid) left Madison County, Iowa, following his short love affair with the conventional wife of an Iowa farmer (Francesca Johnson), until his death. Actually there is not much discussion about Francesca; rather the story is focused on Robert's new discovery of his forgotten son produced from a one-night sexual encounter with a free-spirited girl in Northern California when Robert was much younger. This epilogue dilutes the beautiful love story between Robert and Francesca described in The Bridges of Madison County, which I have always defended against pretentious friends who regarded it as a trashy romance novel. It appears to me that Robert James Waller was forced to write this terrible "A Thousand Country Roads" for some reason which I don't understand.

GREAT but what would you expect from Waller??.......2003-10-25
I don't know what the "average" person expected from this novel -- there would be NO happy ending in reality because we couldn't see the 2 of them get back together! But we did see they never stopped loving each other so that helped us all! I agree with the reviewer that said Francesca should have been featured more and less of the other woman. But all in all -- Waller doesn't let us down. For those of you that don't know -- there is a CD of music -- Ballads of Madison County --its FABULOUS -- I found a copy on ebay -- Waller plays and sings some great songs.
An easy book to tie it all up...........2003-06-10
I actually liked this book quite a bit. Now I will say, when I read Bridges I was so overcome with emotion, it also was an easy read, but it really struck a chord (I find this true with my friends also) I was thrilled to see the second book, and it has also hit paperback (a nice, inexpensive option) for you tote with you.
I loved that the book stayed true to the characters, just kind of taking you inside their lives and minds and souls a little bit more. Kincaid, such a loner and wandereer... but a nice twist is thrown in to this book ( I am not giving it away) that helps you realize his tender side.... Francesca, always the loyal submissive housewife (except for her time with Robert) shows us how these memories both sustained and haunted her after her goodbye to Robert. It's an interesting peak into their lives after the fact.
You know from reading the first book, that these two do not ever come in contact again, but a for some reason a little part of me thought maybe this book would try to defy it in one small way. I actually think I was hoping for it, but don't worry, Waller doesn't give in so easy.... he stays true to the plot, meanwhile giving you a satisfying look at the ends of these lives.
If you are looking for a light, easy read, with just enough emotion to touch you (though this is not the kind of book that will ROCK your world or anything) especially if you enjoyed the first book, don't pass this little one up. Even if you haven't read the first one, I think you could still find this one enjoyable. It is always interesting to be pushed into that thought of wondering..... what chances have we missed ??????

A Thousand Country Roads.......2007-04-07
A great epilogue to another great book (The Bridges of Madison County). Love all of Robert James Waller's work. I would recommend any of his books!
A Thousand Country Roads.......2007-03-09
The detail of descriptions is one of the major joys of Robert Waller's writing. You can actually see the places and know the people he meets along his travels. This book is no different and of course, is the conclusion of "Madison County". Same route with new people, new places are all special. Wish the ending could have been more the way I would have liked it but then even life has disapointments.
A Thousand Country Roads.......2006-07-10
Mr. Waller does a wonderful job of pulling together all the loose ends left at the finish of "Bridges Of Madison County".
When Francesca and Robert are about to meet once again at the covered bridge the readers will find themselves reaching for that box of tissues!
Robert James Waller's books: pages of poetic prose........2006-05-25
A Thousand Country Roads doesn't disappoint because of Waller's vivid descriptions of Kincaid's natural surroundings, of his life-long memories, and of his unfulfilled dreams. How beautifully he manages to bare the soul of a lonely, aging man. It makes one wonder how many men who walk this earth fail to explore their inner needs till their dying day. Bravo to Waller for showing us that 'real men can love and real men can cry'. Just read this story for the pure enjoyment of Waller's words and expressive emotions, and forget some of the criticisms about this book. Ah, if only I could write with such majesty...and I bet a few of those critics might long for that creative skill as well.
Great Ending.......2005-08-23
If you loved Bridges of Madison County this is a great story to tie everything together. Loved it!!

One of the worst Viking romances I've ever read.......2007-07-28
After reading Heather Grahams "Lord of the Wolves", which I enjoyed tremendously, I thought I'd try another one of her many novels. I was rather disappionted to find this book lacked all the wonderful dialogue that "Lord of the Wolves" had. After our heroine is captured and wed to the Viking pretty much nothing else goes on but constant pickering. Which of course would be o.k. if I hadn't expected "romance" in a romance novel........
It was ok.......2006-10-24
But I just didn't really like it that much. I plain old didn't care for either of the main characters, and didn't find thier love story believable.
very good but not a 'sweet' romance.......2006-07-16
This was the first book i read by Heather Graham and i absolutely loved it!! I enjoyed this book for a variety of reasons
Firstly even though Eric is a very rough and dominant character he never rapes Rhiannon although in some scenes you would almost expect him to.
Both Eric and Rhiannon have very strong persionalities that clash all the time and most of the book revolves around their fights so if you are the type of person who's into a sweet read this book is definetly not for you.
I throughly recommend this book to anyone who is not afraid to read about strong love scences and turbulant emotions.
This book also doesn't have any adultery which i hate reading about!!!
ERIC WAS NO HERO..........2005-05-04
As a lover of period and epic romantic novels, I was sorely disappointed that this novel contained no romance at all. Eric was so abusive to Rhiannon, I thought I had mistakenly bought a self-help book on the signs to determine if you're lover is abusive, instead of a romance novel. I enjoy fiesty, independent heroines and saw no real problems with Rhiannon, other than her reason for falling in love with a man like Eric. I cringe at the number of times he grabbed her by her hair, yanking it brutally; or ruthlessly throwing her on the bed before diving on top of her with all his weight, even while she was pregnant. The almost-rape left me cold and detatched. I cannot understand the motivation for Eric. I know he wanted and coveted land, but his personality was woefully lacking in charisma, humor and warmth. Eric was just another handsome character that was unworthy of the brave and intelligent heroine. I know men of that period considered women as property, whom they could treat as they please and abuse at will....but who want's to read about it in a romance novel?
Not worth the time.......2003-03-03
I don't usually bother to write reviews of books, but this is one I can't fail to write my opinion of. I am in love with the Viking era, read as many romances set in this time period as I can find, and an a member of a reinactment society. Yet this is the first Viking romance I couldn't bring myself to finish.
The history is fine, but even the setting was not enough to keep my attentions. Something just doesn't work about this book. We get both a tortured hero and a near-rape forced seduction all in one. No man who is a man commits rape, and there is simply not enough to this plot to overcome the hero's terrible failings.
I was disgusted.
Product Description
Lady Rhiannon had defended her land against what she had thought was a Viking invasion. But the handsome barbarian, who had led his ships to her coast and vanquished her in battle, was the charismatic Eric of Ireland-a man invited by Rhiannon's uncle, King Alfred himself, to help England fight the hated Vikings. Rhiannon had fought the person she believed was her enemy-and lost. She would have to pay the price of her mistake-marriage to the man she hated above all else: Eric...
Book Description
Five hundred years before Columbus, a Viking woman named Gudrid sailed off the edge of the known world. She landed in the New World and lived there for three years, giving birth to a baby before sailing home. Or so the Icelandic sagas say. Even after archaeologists found a Viking longhouse in Newfoundland, no one believed that the details of Gudrid’s story were true. Then, in 2001, a team of scientists discovered what may have been this pioneering woman’s last house, buried under a hay field in Iceland, just where the sagas suggested it could be. Joining scientists experimenting with cutting-edge technology and the latest archaeological techniques, and tracing Gudrid’s steps on land and in the sagas, Nancy Marie Brown reconstructs a life that spanned—and expanded—the bounds of the then-known world. She also sheds new light on the society that gave rise to a woman even more extraordinary than legend has painted her and illuminates the reasons for its collapse.
Customer Reviews:
A powerful book!.......2007-09-25
A powerful book. The Far Traveler is a striking play with some of the concepts of the age that it relates. In saga time, divinatory practice was said to open up the past, revealing hidden information about people and their (wrong)doings. This book represents remote sensing in a dual sense; not only does it provide an illuminating account of high-tech archaeology and the ways in which it gazes beyond the surface layers of modern Icelandic farmland, also, and more importantly, it convincingly reconstructs a series of spectacular events from distant times and contexts. Thanks to Nancy Marie Brown's vivid imagination, detailed research, and, above all, skilful narration, the brave world of Gudrid finally gets the treatment it truly deserves. A moving and gripping account, in a language strangely reminiscent of the saga style. Gisli Palsson, author of Travelling Passions: The Hidden Life of Vilhjalmur Stefansson
Travelling Passions: Stefansson, the Arctic Explorer
Real-life mystery.......2007-09-24
For any reader who appreciates a good, real-life mystery and enjoys learning about the old crafts and lost arts, Far Traveler satisfies on all counts. As in her previous book, A Good Horse Has No Color, the author writes with such descriptive precision and sense of immediacy that the reader experiences the search for information about this historically significant Icelandic woman as if right by the author's side during the discovery process. A book you want to immediately re-read on reaching the last page when the story comes full circle.
Vivid Account of Viking Life.......2007-09-24
The far-traveling Viking woman of the title was Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir, once a sister-in-law of Leif Eirikson and reputedly the mother of the first European child born in North America. The little which is known specifically of Gudrid comes from two Icelandic sagas: "Eirik the red's Saga" and "The Greenlanders' Saga", but even those two sources disagree with one another about details of Gudrid's life. What we can be reasonably sure of is that Gudrid was born in Iceland, traveled to the new Norse Greenland colonies in about the year 1000, became a ward of Eirik the Red, and married his son, Thorstein, who soon died. Widowed, Gudrid then married the Icelandic merchant Thorfinn Karlsefni, apparently convinced Karlsefni to attempt colonization of the newly discovered Vinland, lived with her husband for three years in Vinland -- at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, it seems -- giving birth to a son, Snorri, then returned to Greenland and then back to Iceland, where Karlsefni died. In later life, Gudrid may have made a pilgrimage to Rome and returned to Iceland to die a nun.
With so few details of Gudrid's life certain, the greatest part of Nancy Marie Brown's book is devoted to exploring what we know of Viking life, especially in Iceland, and what we don't know, plus a first-hand account of Brown's experiences as a volunteer archaeologist at the site of what appears to be Gudrid's final home in Iceland. Along the way, the author discusses the nature of Icelandic sagas and the fine Viking arts of cheese-making and weaving. All this is done in an engaging manner that brings Gudrid (and modern Iceland) fully to life.
My only real criticism of the book is that it could have benefited from additional maps and from diagrams of the Norse ruins at L'Anse aux Meadows and of Gudrid's Icelandic farm at Glaumbaer.

From book's back cover:
"Anna can't forget what happened to her mother. She makes herself a promise that it will not happen to her and sets out to find her own house in America. But fate has another plan.
As the train station faded into the distance, tears streamed down Anna's face. Georg pulled her close and kissed the dampness on her cheeks. "It's going to be all right, my Norska," he whispered. "We are Vikings and the north wind makes us strong. Our journey has just begun.""

Customer Reviews:
Interesting, Conceptual and Revealing .......2005-12-05
Being a voracious reader and having read many help, self-help and purely entertaining books this reader found this book a wonderful journey to humorous and alternatively healing self-awareness. The Bible for Men: Volume I was an enlightening combination of entertainment, thought-provocation and an unexpected connection to a deeper level of understanding. I became emotionally engaged and enraged at the onset of the book only to find myself subsequently thoroughly entertained and educated. I remained open-minded and with an open soul to allow myself a deeper understanding not only of my male counterparts but also human interaction and psychology. A definite must read for any gender seeking cultural understanding, enlightenment and growth. Perhaps many relationships will sustain with a conscious release of social-minded principles.
Never underestimate thought.......2005-11-29
This book is a marvelous seduction into debate. If the reader can let go and travel with this author he will lead you to some mind-altering discoveries. The text is so compelling that you aren't aware of the levels of discovery it triggers.
Everyone should put it on their MUSTreadlist. That is if they want to have a successful and fulfilling relationship with their mate. This book arrived just in time for me, with my boyfriend at my doorstep. Talk about romance gone friendship turned business. My boyfriend's reluctance to participate in my immediate desire to share out takes with me, made me, well...I don't think HE is interested in really reading this. But mind's can change when they want to, when they aren't arthritic in thought, when they accept challenge and questions. Take a look under the blanket of marriage and rearrange the pieces, if you dare.
This book is insightful, entertaining, and has a mysterious current of movement flowing beneath the text.... I'm following the current, but my mind is full of notions. At first I was reluctant to follow the author's lead into conversation with spirits, it seemed silly, like an abrupt step at first, but in no time, I was hooked.
Exceptional, honest and revealing; for those readers who want to be entertained or for those who want to fortify their romantic encounters, both will find a nest here.
Self Importance, is so seductive, a representation that fits like a glove. Jealousy, she's the bitch you'd imagine, easy to hate but always in such good company you can't ignore her! Marriage and Monogamy are like figments of the imagination, the nightmare twins. These spirits are alive in my brain, their physical descriptions have given way to this unique scene. Reading is like travel; I can feel a lift of freedom, a seed of hope. I've enjoyed "The Bible for Men" very much. The concepts and the artistic medium through which they are delivered make this an excellent teaching tool. Bringing wit and humor into a very serious area, an area that has room for improvement. I think you will agree, where human interaction is concerned no stone should be left unturned.
So, please don't leave this one behind!
Can't judge a book by its cover? With this one you can........2005-11-22
Look at this cover. What's the deal with the old VFW dude wearing shorts that are way to short for him, hanging out with some other closeted idiots, while some washed up waitress looking chick (presumably trying to look interested and sexy) stares on? It's a total joke, and looks as if some fool snapped it up at a local Starbuck's, or, probably more realistic, visiting hours at a nursing home.
Then you get inside the book itself. Kind of like a geeky junior high kid's version of Dale Carnegie's book if you ask me. You didn't, but I told you anyway. It's a complete and total travesty and those people who are, in any way, lead by this treatise need to seriously get out of the house more and develop some taste (as well as social skills).
Avoid. Completely.
Immaturity and hedonism rule!.......2005-11-19
I found this book depressing. The author is advocating that it is not right for women to expect them to be faithful and monogamous as this is simply the way they are made. He does not believe in marriage and relationships should not be expected to last. This is a bleak scenario where hedonism, selfishness and immaturity reign but the author does not adequately tackle the inconvenient existence of children or sexually-transmitted diseases such as AIDS in encouraging promiscuity and the right for men to do whatever they please. I won't be reading Vol.2
as I would probably want to slit my wrists...
The Truth Sometimes Hurts.......2005-10-31
In The Bible for Men, Richard D. Mills has opened the door on relationships and forced us to take a hard look at the contemporary, and often contemptuous, interactions between men and women. He does a wonderful job of addressing the distinctly peculiar bonds that link men and women together. When sharing his own personal experiences, Mills does so in a manner that can only be described as vulnerable and wryly astute. He is able to deftly balance humor and sadness in a way that ultimately adds weight to his musings on life, love and women. He writes with a lavish confidence that challenges the intellect, stirs a wide range of emotions, and satisfies the soul. If you are searching for a different male perspective that lends shrewd insight into the struggles, absurdities, strengths and intimacies of friendship, dating and marriage, this book is for you. The Bible for Men is an enjoyable, insightful, and very entertaining read. It certainly left me hungering for Volume II.
