4 out of 5 stars Some Advice For Prospective Readers.......2007-09-29

Truth be told, I am nowhere near finishing this gargantuan tome, and if I ever do get through it I might end up giving it a five star rating. But for now, I thought I would go ahead and post a few suggestions for the person considering tackling this novel. These are drawn from my impressions based upon what I have read thus far, and I hope they help prepare you. Here's my list of tips:

- I suggest making notes (I'm not kidding). I realize you might not
feel like taking the trouble, but I'm telling you that the myriad of
Russian names & characters is staggering, and a few notes jotted down
as things unfold (especially a list of characters) can help you keep
track far better.

- Make a firm but manageable plan as to when you're going to find time
to read this work. If this is not done, it's definitely the kind of
book that will very likely end up unread. Random snatches here and
there won't cut it.

- Become a patient reader, letting Tolstoy tell his grand story at his
own pace. This is no Agatha Christie! If you give it time, though, I
think you'll eventually find the author's overall sweep magnificent.

- Finally, realize this. It has been said that with Russian authors,
the more you get to know them the less you know them. In other words,
there is something a bit strange (or unique) about them which you
might not always care for. Almost hard to put your finger on. My
advice would simply be not to let this aspect of their literature keep
you from seeing its considerable virtues.

For example, one virtue of this novel that I have not seen mentioned is how effectively and poignantly it brings out the element of confusion in war. It is not just a matter of sharp strategies, brutal conflict, etc. In the midst of matters of life and death, there is plenty of madcap absurdity mixed in as well, purely unintentionally. Was it not a dash of genius on Tolstoy's part to notice, think of, and include this often-overlooked, seemingly incongruous aspect of human warfare? You get that kind of thing with Leo.

3 out of 5 stars The Best thing next to a time machine.......2007-09-16

This novel presents you an image of what the life of European upper classes was like in the 19th century, their never ending parties and balls, their courtships, the perennial presence of war. It's interesting to observe how the persons were full-fledged adults by their late teens. And it was accepted as a normal thing that your children could die at any moment, be it in combat, for the sons, or during child labour if they were daughters.

This novel has as a background the Napoleonic Wars and several historical characters have intermittent cameos like Emperors Napoleon and Alexander, their generals, etc.

There is also an interesting mention to Freemasonry and its rites. It's thick as a brick, do not despair, continue reading, even if it is some pages every day, at the end you'll enjoy it.

2 out of 5 stars Cat Club Review: www.freewebs.com/hlgstrider.......2007-07-13

I do not actually own War and Peace, but I thought I'd point out that I have read it. This is me saying, "I have read it!" It took me about six months and I am still not really sure what the point is, but I have read it. It was a matter of pride.
I am not a slow reader usually. I read Crime and Punishment in two days. However, I couldn't read Tolstoy's master work in long sessions, only in small, bite sized portions, one every other day or so. This is why I somewhat un-affectionately refer to this book as War in Pieces. Now, I have been told that this is a book that you don't really get when you are young but later on when you have lived life if you come back to it and read it all over again it makes a lot more sense and is a lot more interesting. . .so maybe I should wait and pick it up again in fifteen years, but still. . .what was the plot? Why was Pierre the main character when everyone else was so much more interesting? Why didn't they kill Pierre and let Andrei live? I liked Andrei. Why didn't they spend more time doing things rather than talking about doing them? Why did it take me six months to chop through that thing. . .why why why why why. . .
So, I only give it a two, but who knows. In fifteen years I might change my mind, so stay posted.

4 out of 5 stars Daunting, but splendid!.......2007-06-26

"so well bound that it will lie open at any page" haha not quite, unless you've read it a few times.

I enjoyed the introduction to the book, to Tolstoy, the translation, characters etc... and the quick references in both back and front, which made it simple to look something up during those times when my head was swimming in a sea of names and places.

Since I do not know French I would often read near a computer with the Babel Fish translation web site up for quick decoding. I imagine a French-English dictionary would have sufficed. If you do not know French (like a few of us out there) then a reference is a must because most of the first half of this book you will be confronted by many French terms and phrases and if you have no idea what they're saying then the impact of the story kinda gets lost momentarily. Having to translate with this book made it that much more fun and interesting, I hadn't realized how enjoyable it could be to get that envolved into a story.

This took me aprox. 3 weeks of on and off reading, and the sheer size of it can be intimidating, but it is a superb read, with detailed historical accounts accompanied by Tolstoy's educated opinions (not your average novel). The depth of the characters is wonderful, although I find the aristocratic life to be a little odd and facetious at times.

5 out of 5 stars probably the most serviceable in English.......2007-05-25

The Oxford World's Classics edition of "War and Peace" is the one I find myself coming back to whenever the need arises to sink into Tolstoy's novel again. I have tried others but I am most comfortable with this version.

What you're looking at here is the entire novel, unabridged, in one volume: the previous Oxford's World Classics edition of "War and Peace" was two volumes, but was entirely the same text, including the footnotes.

They've used the Louise and Aylmer Maude translation, which reads fluidly enough, except that it uses British English, including a lot of British slang, the intended effect of which, I imagine, will fall flat on an American ear.

As for the footnotes, the ones here were done by Henry Gifford, and they work as follows: next to each glossed term in the text, there appears an asterisk. In the back of the book are the corresponding annotations; there are no notes in the running text itself. The footnotes are well done and literate, but Gifford seems a bit stingy with them: there are only 26 pages of them for the entire text!

One thing I kind of wish is that Gifford had glossed the ubiquitous British slang that peppers this translation. This would help out many readers (especially American ones) considerably, but the folks at Oxford University Press would probably take a dim view of such charity.

3 out of 5 stars not worth the wait.......2005-08-22

I was anxiously awaiting Miranda and Daniel's story. I thought he was really intriguing in the previous book he had appeared in. But, Truly a Wife was a disappointment. Not enough interaction between Miranda and Daniel and WAY TOO MUCH of the spy stuff. The spy angle is okay, but a little goes a long way. There was page after page of it, when I felt the author should be having some interaction between the lead couple. This story felt rushed. Daniel is out of commission for most of the book and it just seems that all of a sudden, he realizes he loves her. The interplay between Griff and Alyssa in the book leading up to this was superior. Truly a Wife could have been a really good book (because of Daniel and Miranda) if a little more time and editing had been spent on it.

4 out of 5 stars Not up to my expectations, but a good read.......2005-08-18

Miranda is a maarvelous heroine -- strong, intelligent, capable, courageous.... I was a bit disappointed in Daniel; from the other books, I had high expectations of both him and the romance. The 4 stars reflects my slight disappointment that my expectations were not met. I'd been waiting for their story.

However, other than that, Lee has written another fine book in the series; it meshes well with Jarrod's book, which occurs almost simulataneously (maybe someday I'll reread them in tandem). It's also very romantic, really. Miranda's love for Daniel is blindingly obvious; it just takes him a little longer to admit to the situation.

4 out of 5 stars great, with only one disappointment.......2005-08-02

For a couple that has been sparring through the other three books, you would think that there would be more word-play and action between the two. However, it goes too quickly that they fall in for each other. Their noble intentions keep being the stumbling block for both, however, which makes it amusing and light.

Unlike Jarrod & Sarah's book (Hardly a Husband) which happens at the same time, there is considerable play of the Free Fellows and their missions against France. The mystery behind who shot Daniel in the very beginning of the novel plays throughout and we get our answers in a most satisfactory way.

Pick up all of the books for a quick beach weekend read.

4 out of 5 stars Good one in this series!.......2005-06-21

Daniel really intrigued me so did Miranda. She had loved him forever and I was so taken how she was willing to do anything to protect him that night after they left the ball. She with his blood all over her beautiful dress and him barely able to walk, from his wound, and he only even came to the ball to protect Miranda from his mother's rath. These Freefellow guys had some pretty strange resolutions about their country and taking a wife and all of them eventually fall victim to true love. Miranda and Daniel were one of the more devoted to each other for a long time. The back drop of these stories is somewhat uninteresting to follow but other than that all of these are great romances!

3 out of 5 stars captivating heroine makes this a good read.......2005-04-10

"Truly a Wife" continues the saga of the Free Fellows League (a League originally founded by Griffin, the Viscount Abernathy, Colin, Viscount Grantham, & Jarrod, Earl of Westmore, in which the three young men had vowed to foreswear marriage in favour of adventure, the League has since expanded to include Daniel, the ninth Duke of Sussex, Jonathan Manners, the Earl of Barclay, & Alexander, the Marques of Courtland, and the League is now heavily involved in efforts to thwart Bonaparte), and focuses on the romance between Daniel, ninth Duke of Sussex, and Miranda, the Marchioness of St. Germaine.

Even though he has been quite badly wounded while out on a mission, nothing is going to stop Daniel from attending his mother's annual ball. Especially since he has taken it upon himself to invite Miranda, the Marchioness of Sussex, against his mother's wishes. Alas, it doesn't look as if Daniel is going to be able to enjoy this ball at all as within minutes of arriving, his wound reopens. Forced to rely on Miranda, Daniel places himself in her hands and begs her to help leave the ball. Miranda comes through for him and takes him to one of her properties in order to recuperate. But what Daniel never anticipated was that this forced confinement, with Miranda at his beck and call, would cause him to confront his two opposing desires: his desire for unencumbered adventure, and his desire for Miranda. On the one had is his feeling that he is not quite ready for marriage and that Miranda, with responsibilities of her own may not be the ideal mate for the Duke of Sussex; but on the other hand there is Miranda, who is intelligent, reliable, capable and who fires his blood in way no other woman ever has. What will Daniel do, and what will he decide? And what of Miranda, who had once given her heart to Daniel only to have it trampled by him. Should she risk giving it to him one more time?

"Truly a Wife" is a simple enough story about a gentleman who is madly in love with an exceptional lady but who feels that he is not quite ready for marriage. A very familiar plot motif. What really carries this book then, and pulls the reader in, is the character of this exceptional lady, Miranda St. Germaine. Intelligent, capable, loyal and independent, Miranda is the kind of aristocratic heroine you wish there were more of. And I couldn't help but feel for this woman who, in spite of her bitter disappointment and anguish, has been living in the quiet hope that Daniel will come to his senses and court her again. Daniel, charming and debonair though he was, was a bit of a prat. And I have to say that after he had bruised Miranda's heart and feelings for the third time in a row, I really began to wonder if he deserved her. All in all though, "Truly a Wife" proved to be an engrossing read. The plot contrivance to get Miranda and Daniel together was a bit much (won't go into it so that I'm not accused of plot spoilers), and Daniel was a bit feeble, but stalwart Miranda made this a worthwhile and engaging read. And I'd rate "Truly a Wife" as a good 3 ½ star read.

Book Description

A missing husband … a mysterious portrait … a twenty-year-old crime ….

The Denver Police think that John Hewitt has simply taken off, probably with another woman, but Caroline Hewitt doesn’t believe it. In frustration, she turns for help to her old friend, middle-aged software consultant Lexy Connor.

Lexy thinks that 35 years without so much as a Christmas card strains the definition of friendship, but she finds it hard to refuse to help. As Lexy explores the world of John Hewitt, she comes to agree that his disappearance is not simply a manifestation of an overdue mid-life crisis; something vastly more sinister has happened.

The only clue is a portrait of an unknown woman, painted by an equally mysterious artist, but it proves to be enough as Lexy discovers once again that there is no limit to the evil people are capable of inflicting on others in the name of love.

Lexy’s search takes her from the lush landscapes of the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York to the stark mountain ridges of Nevada before it ends in a confrontation with a killer in the Rocky Mountains of her own backyard.

I enjoyed this one even more than Chandler's Daughter. I was already hooked on Truly's prose. It pulls you in and keeps you interested. And I liked the characters.

When's the next one coming out?

5 out of 5 stars Patient reader rewarded.......2002-07-27

After reading Chandler's Daughter a couple of years ago, I have been looking forward to Lexy Connor's next outing. I was not disappointed.

Lexy Connor is renaissance woman who happens to play detective from time to time -- usually at the insistence of someone in her vast circle of acquaintances. Although she has the tenacity essential to the successful detective, she also has the ability to enjoy the scenery -- and the comradeship -- while in pursuit.

Half the fun of a Lexy Connor story is her often wry comments on the situation, the protagonists, and herself. Her creator has the ability to evoke a clear, and often chuckle-worthy, image of a minor character with half a dozen words.

Unfortunately, I now have to start waiting again -- not for quite so long this time, I trust.

I was really happy to find this book because it is sort of a sequal to A Nice Girl... in that Ezra, the hero, it the brother of the heroine there. So I was hoping to see some familiar characters and a similiar sort of mix of passion, wit and intelligence.

However this book was actually quite boring. You never really fell in love with Ezra. I can't remember the heroine's name but she had some complicated sub plot which was never resolved. And their relationship was neither passionate nor romantic. I'm a big Sellers fan but this one doesn't work...

            1 out of 5 stars Dreadful.......2007-01-01

This books along with the latter talent books are so unrealistic as to be boring. The first talent books, Pegasus in Flight and Pegasus in Space were interesting and fun because we were reading about real characters. They had Talent, but they were still real people. The characters in the latter talent books are nothing less than gods, with an almost all-powerful Talent, and seemingly little or no personal problems or limitations (which makes th books dull). Also, what the books really portray, without actually saying it is basically a Talent autocracy. Non talented are inferior and unimportant, and the talented rule over everyone else with their powers. This reminds me of Star Trek, where everyone is law abiding, and the authority of the Federation is unquestioned. So what happens to those who question the authority of the Federation? They are automatically outlaws. Its really quite totalitarian.
Anyway, this book is boring and not worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but a few peeves...........2003-11-21

I listened to the Audio version of Damia's children, and found that it was quite well-narrated. And while I liked this book, I would prefer a book which focused on a single character rather than a novel split into three parts. By rights this should be three books.

The plot is simple: with a threat of the HIVE upon them, the telepathic 'talented' Lyon children must help their parents defend earth from....The predations of a vicious insect species, but are they so vicious? Only the Lyon children seem capable of figuring this out.

I think that the author may fall into a bit of a rut with this series. The Lyon children are 'super' kids, squeaky clean, friendly and well-adjusted. While I understand that they have lots of responsibility, these children are too perfect. They are more competant, more intelligent, and more powerful than anyone else. . No WONDER some Terran's resent them.

Two things that skeeved ne out about this book: Number One: How easily these 'children' are manipulated by the adults. I would hope that in the future they have some form of child labor laws Number Two: The second story about Theon, where he has a relationship with a much older army nurse. Ick. this completely skeeved me out. I guess its just my western mind, but a relationship between a teenager and a much older woman and this person a nurse in a position of authority is pretty gross. No thanks! Ick. Ick. Double Ick!

Overall, the second story cost this book two stars. Not as good as some of her earlier works.

            4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2003-07-28

I absolutely love Anne McCaffrey and have read all of her books. I would have given this book five stars but i think that the books before this, The Rowan and Damia, were unbeatable so I couldn't rate this one as equal. I love the whole telekinesis idea. This book continues with the Primes moving stuff from planet to planet with telikinesis, only it follows Damia's children. A reader should definately read The Rowan and then Damia before reading this book.

            5 out of 5 stars New heroes(together with the old),new challenges.......2000-08-13

It's interesting to read about Damia's children;their personalities, relationships, the challenges they faced, and the lives they lead. The characters of the previous books("The Rowan" and "Damia") are not forgotten, and we still hear about them and see their involvement. This book has more technical details, especially about the Hivers.A good read!

            5 out of 5 stars Damia's children.......2000-06-18

Anne McCaffrey has done it again! Another great book. It follows the story of Damia's 4 eldist children, Laria, Isthian, Rojer and Zara. In my opinan the best parts are when Laria gose to Cleaf and when Isthian is attacked

Suppressed by the early Church fathers who compiled the Bible, these Apocrypal Books have for centuries been shrouded in silence. Now, for the first time in paperbound book, the reader can discover the hidden beauties of the Lost Books. To be found in this volume are the Apostles' Creed, the Psalms and Odes of Solomon, and other Apocrypal writings that have become part of our religious heritage. The story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife, of Adam and Eve, of the girlhood and betrothal of Mary, of the childhood of Jesus, are here in all warmth, intimacy, and humanity of their first telling.

I was raised with the King James version of the Bible and have difficulty accepting other translations.I acquired my copy of The Lost Books at a garage sale and I enjoy it so much I ordered one for my grandson. Not only is it great to read from a historical point, it is easy to read.It reads like a very good novel. The chapters are tied together chronologicaly which holds you attention and keeps you reading for hours on end.I have heard of this book all of my life .To finally have a copy is a treasure and a dream come true.

4 out of 5 stars Brethren, you should not be ignorant ........2007-06-08

Human nature dictates that anything new or different to us we tend to reject or fear it.
As a Jesus believing jew, I am well aware that were more biblical writings and books out there. In Judaism,we have the Talmud, Mishnah, Midrash, etc. After doing some research, I come to realize that in the beginning, there were three bibles. The Hebrew Text, The Greek Text, and the Vulgate. Well, Over the centuries a lot of the material that comprises these works have been lost due to time, and church, and governmental politics.
When approaching a modern-day Christian with this book, they would immediately reject it, and possibly go on the defensive. But, once realized that for centuries the church has withheld the information, or if it did not come out of Rome it is heresy. Oh well.
It was bad enough when the Roman Church kept many of this works hidden. But add the Protestant Reformation which did more harm and rejected some of the already accepted books of the bible. Well, that explains why we are so ignorant in the Church.
This book should be a must read for all Christians. The established denominations will not like it, but, if it is all of the inspired word of God that can help me get to heaven, and live a godly life here on earth, then I will read and listen to what God puts in front of me to absorb.
Not what man or the church says.

1 out of 5 stars please don't be led astray by these "lost books".......2007-04-09

a review above quoted "Now I know why. The Gospel of Thomas lays waste to the notion that Jesus was `the only begotten Son of God' and obviates the need for a formalized church when he says, `When your leaders tell you that God is in heaven, say rather, God is within you, and without you."

this thinking is a classic example of eastern mythology, which directly contradicts all that Christianity is about. (i.e. the eastern religions teach that perfection is within, you only need seek it out. e.g. buddism, hinduism, taoism, too many others to name.) If God (or perfection) is already within you, then there is no need for a personal saviour for redemption of sins.

the "Gospel of Thomas" was written hundreds of years after Christ by Gnostics. there are many things is this book which are in direct conflict with the four Gospels of the Bible. If one looks and earnestly seeks, we can see that the four true Gospels do not conflict with one another.

as an excellent review above stated better than I, these books were left out of the Holy Bible not because they were "lost", but because they were not divinely inspired, and because they conflict with the divinely inspired books of the Bible.

i also find the notion of "lost knowledge", or "lost books of the Bible" very exciting. however God provided us all we need in His Holy Bible. please do not be decieved and led down the wrong path by these other books! God Bless.

5 out of 5 stars The rest of the story.............2006-11-10

During my first 50 years on this earth, I often wondered if there wasn't more to the Bible than we were receiving. It always seemed odd that a group of men could decide what should and should not be in the Bible. These additional gospels, letters & stories seem to tie up some loose ends, at least for me. More of Jesus's childhood days are written about as well as a detailed history of Adam and Eve and their descendents and how the "family tree" ties all of the Old Testament together. One must, however, keep an open mind and realize that these stories, like the ones in the Bible, have been handed down from word of mouth throughout the centuries until a method of preserving them was perfected. This book is great for a Bible Study group and will open the eyes of those who have never been, up to now, able to hear this collection of great books before. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in the history of mankind.

4 out of 5 stars What Might Have Been: Apocrypha & Pseudepigrapha.......2006-04-12

A decent collection of books which, for whatever reason, were excluded by the early Church (Catholic) councils from what became the Old Testament and New Testament. Initially published in 1926, each one of the "Lost Books" includes a brief introduction giving background and history. Like the editors of this two-part volume, I do not feel it is necessary to share my opinion of the historicity of these works, each reader can decide for him or herself what is shadow and what is reality, and consider the debate which at one time engulfed some of these books.

This volume is divided into two sections. The first is called "Lost Books of the Bible", and includes works which deal with Jesus & company, and may at one time have been considered part of the New Testament Gospel. Includes are the following 26 "lost" books:

Mary, Protevangelion, I. Infancy, II. Infancy, Christ and Abgarus, Nicodemus, The Apostles' Creed, Laodiceans, Paul and Senica, Paul and Thecla, I. Clement, II. Clement, Barnabus, Ephesians, Magnesians, Trallians, Romans, Philadelphians, Smyrnaeans, Polycarp, Philippians, I. Hermas-Visions, II. Herman-Commands, III. Hermas-Similitudes, Letters of Herod and Pilate, The Last Gospel of Peter

Part the Second is titled "The Forgotten Books of Eden", and includes works which are suited to the Hebrew Bible, or Old Testament. They too were excluded by Jewish (and some Christian) councils due to doubts about their age and origins. Includes are the following 20 books:

The First Book of Adam and Eve, The Second Book of Adam and Eve, The Secrets of Enoch, The Psalms of Solomon, The Odes of Solomon, The Letter of Aristeas, The Fourth Book of Maccabees, The Story of Ahikar, The Testament of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Joseph, Benjamin

This affordable book offers a thought provoking read for those with a general interest "outside of the box". While the translations are somewhat dated, they are not difficult to understand.

2 out of 5 stars An interesting book........2007-02-22

This is an interesting compilation of apocryphal books.
Every book has a short, but helpful Introduction.
There are a handful of books that stand out from the rest for me.

                          The General Epistle of Barnabas.
"This Epistle lays a greater claim to canonical authority than most others."
May be the best book included.

                          The Gospel of Nicodemus.
Formerly called the "Acts of Pontius Pilate",this book is believed a forgery. It is an entertaining read about Christ's trial, crucifixion and some of the events surrounding it.

                          The Shepherd of Hermas.
The origin of this book is known. It has wisdom and is a useful book.

The Secrets of Enoch is included in this book. This is the Slavonic version which I would rate lower than the Ethiopic version.
This collection runs the gamut. You will find gnostic writings, legitimate early church age writings, and bizarre fiction.

If you are interested in literature from that age or gnosticism, this book will be of more value to you.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but get a better translation of these books.......2005-02-06

The Lost Books of the Bible is a very interesting book, albeit one which uses very outdated translations and is far from being complete. If you are intrigued by the Da Vinci Code or Gnosticism and want to know more about those books that were not picked for the Bible, this book would not be a bad place to start if the translations were not so antiquated. There are many newer books with more up-to-date translations of these "lost books" that are more useful today, such as The Nag Hammadi Library in English by James Robinson, which contains a different selection of works but gives a better overview of the Gnostic Gospels. The original translations in this book date from approximately a century ago, long before the discoveries of the Dead Sea Scrolls and at Nag Hammadi, so do not expect to find any of that stuff in here.
The Lost Books of the Bible contains some very interesting books, particularly the very unorthodox Gospel of Thomas, which portrays Jesus as somewhat of a nasty boy growing up. Still, I found some of the books more readable than others, with the Books of Eden being a chore to get through due to the translation. My bottom line is that there are better books than The Lost Books of the Bible for those interested in Gnosticism and its related works.

5 out of 5 stars provides additional insight.......2005-01-14

You'll find information here on topics not addressed directly or in much detail in the Bible. For example, additional (probably fictional) details about the early life of Jesus and the perpetual virginity of Mary. Also, you'll find one early church father's discussion of the importance of the three-fold ministry of bishop/priest/deacon, and you'll read why this same author is willing to die for his faith. Even the topic of abortion is addressed by one of the early Christian writers (an associate of Paul). I didn't find the section partaining to the "old testament" quite as interesting, but maybe others will. Of course, the authorship of many of these books is questionable, but these days you could say that of many of the books of the Bible as well.

First of all, I took off a star for the very poor print quality of this book. It is poorly organized, hard to read, sometimes too small and crammed on the page. The type needs to be reset in a modern font and format to make it easier to read and comprehend the works in this volume.

As far as the actual content in this book goes, it is very good and useful. Most commentators and critics disparage and denigrate the "Pseudepigrahpa" because they were written at a much later time and by anomymous scribes who credited thier work to a hero or patriarch of the Bible, such as Enoch, Adam, Solomon, The Twelve Patriarchs, etc.

The editor makes a lot of excellent points in his INTRODUCTION to THE LOST BOOKS OF EDEN: "Writers sought to SHELTER THEMSELVES behind the names of the great dead. In this THEY WERE GUILTY OF NO FRAUD. They imagined what Solomon or Enoch would say upon a particular theme under given circumstances. It was NOT REALLY THEY THEMSELVES, but THIER Enoch, Solomon, or Enoch IN THEM, who uttered the new prophesies or temple praises... that body of literature, called by modern scholars 'PSEUDEPIGRAPHA' that is, writings erronously, un-historically, YET SINCERELY ascribed to heroic figures summed up from the vasty deep by a SELF-DENYING imagination, eager to ALTER MAN'S BELIEF OR CUSTOM, to interpret his hope or sorrow, WITHOUT PERSONAL GAIN OR FAME, and also, may one add, WITHOUT THE DETERRENT OF PERSECUTION OT ARREST FREE UTTERANCE!"

"NOW IT IS A FOOLISH MODERN PREDJUDICE AGAINST AN ANCIENT PIECE OF LITERATURE THAT ITS AUTHOR VEILED HIS PERSON IN THIS FASHION. The ONLY question is: Was the writing of INHERENT VALUE? DID IT EXERCISE INFLUENCE?

Some of these books are boring and a pain to get through, and some are innacurate to traditional Christain doctrine (THE ACTS OF PAUL AND THECLA as an example). Some, like HERMAS are not worth reading.

But I will take the words of "Enoch" in THE BOOK OF THE SECRETS OF ENOCH (the best work in this collection) literally:

"For the BOOKS ARE MANY and in them you will LEARN ALL THE LORD'S WORKS, all that has been from the beginning of Creation and will be to the end of time. And if you OBSERVE MY HANDWRITING, you WILL NOT SIN AGAINST THE LORD, because there is no other except the Lord..."
"And DISTRIBUTE THE BOOKS...amoungst the nations that have the sense to fear God, let them recieve them and MAY THEY COME TO LOVE THEM more than any food or EARTHLY SWEETS, and READ THEM and apply themselves to them. And those who understand not the Lord, who fear not God, who ACCEPT NOT, but reject, who do not receive them (sc. THE BOOKS), A TERRIBLE JUDGEMENT AWAITS THESE.
"BLESSED is the man who shall BEAR THIER YOKE and shall DRAG THEM ALONG, for he shall be released on the day of the great judgement."
