3 out of 5 stars not the best.......2007-05-01

this does read more like an encyclopedia than a real travel companion.it doesn't really have alot of pictures of the places it talks about....it is a little on the borring side.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but a little dry........2005-05-26

In the past I've been all about the Lonely Planet guides but tried out the Rough Guide for a recent trip through Spain. Though it's a great guide, it lacks personality and reads more like an encyclopedia than a real travel companion. The small print and color scheme is also hard to follow. If you want lots of details and don't mind lugging this massive volume around with you, this is a good choice, but if you want a more concise and cheeky review of a place, this book probably isn't for you.

3 out of 5 stars Lots of info, but..........2005-03-18

Having been to Spain 14 times, I can say that this is a useful book, although some of the information and pictures are not essential. Given its size (1152 pages) and weight, this is a book to be read before your trip; be sure to have good lighting and good eyesight as the somewhat faint and small type will prove challenging to some.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable!.......2004-07-19

If you are looking for a small book to fit in your back pocket, The Rough Guide to Spain is not for you. If you are looking for a guide that lovingly describes even the smallest Spanish town in careful detail and clear format, then this IS the guide book you should be looking for.

The Rough Guide to Spain does an excellent job in several areas where many guide books fail. For example, smaller attractions are often overlooked in favor of the larger cities, such as Barcelona or Sevilla. Rough Guide ensures that for those who want to go provincial, they won't be going in blind.

Another merit of the guide is in it's clear, concise format. Not overburdened with irrelevant maps/illustartions (a pet peeve of mine), Rough Guide has clean, simple directions and mapping. This is a vast imporvements over Guides like Lonely Planet, where I often feel the editors publish more with an eye towards their own self-satisfaction than towards the serious traveler.

The resturaunt/hotel features are adequate, frequently include useful maps, and will not tax anyone's checkbook too harshly.

Perhaps the greatest strength of this guide is the seeming conviction of the editors to tell you that which you NEED to know for that trip to Spain. Michelin might the cultural ask-all, DK may have lots of lovely photographs, but Rough Guide is for when you're ready to get serious about your trip to Spain.

Well-written, informative, with a clear and honest style that should impress both casual and budget traveler alike, The Rough Guide to Spain should be your FIRST PICK in guide books.

Book Description

Barbara Rose Brooker, author of "God Doesn't Make Trash and So Long, Princess": "Truly, a story for our times. If 'The Catcher in the Rye' were written today instead of fifty years ago, it would very much look like this. Simon Lazarus is a multi-layered odyssey of humor, depth, zest and originality."

B. C. Madrigan, The Noyan Institute: "There is no way I can adequately describe the wonder of this book. Simon Lazarus is both an old and new tale taking on dimensions I've yet to see in any contemporary novel. Just the pace of it will keep you turning its pages for hours. It'll be worth wearing out the flashlight on this one!"

Eckhart Tolle, author of "The Power of Now": "Simon Lazarus resonates an extraordinary beauty and wisdom one associates with the best of spiritual fiction (Herman Hesse comes to mind). From the very first page, Simon takes you by the hand and never lets you go. Join Simon on what is both an inward and outward journey filled with a wealth of stunning truths amid a very funny landscape. A book to be treasured." Dr. Daniel J. Gustafson, family psychotherapist: "Finally, here's an aptly funny and startlingly true narrative that captures the youth of today! This one's for the post-gen-x-ers-a.k.a. the "undeclared generation". And how fortunate it is to have such a wacky yet wise writer at its helm. M. A. Kirkwood will delight and enchant you, so sit back and enjoy the ride!"

5 out of 5 stars An overlooked treasure.......2007-09-01

Before you set out to read this novel be prepared to be thoroughly amused and involved.

Si will take you on a truly distinctive inner-outer journey into modern self-hood in the garb of Gen-Y-culture and more. (Trust me. The humor is infectious, and the characters, colorful and irresistable). All the while, something incredible occurs amid all the wacko adventures:

18 year old Si incrementally becomes none-other than a master of his own fate through an insistence that only by means of purest trust in his OWN perceptions can he be led to any genuine form of self-birth. A resonating plot evolves set on the premise of perceived assorted perils amid the striking inner monologues and outer dialogues of a contemporary college student, a la late 90's and all to a Kurt Cobain, Counting Crows sorta soundtrack. (Yes, all that, too!)

This is one awesomely healing and astonishing first novel. Kudos to this writer... whoever and where-ever you may be... this reader wants more!

(Deserves to be more than a small-press release. One wonders how the larger publishing venues could've passed on what looks like a future classic.)

5 out of 5 stars A nonpareil.......2007-07-28

I finished reading this novel a few days ago and I'm still thinking about it. This is--by far--one of the better reads I've come across in a while and I've been telling others about it. I don't want to give it away--and I can't add much to what has already been elucidated here by others, but it really is an original. But it's also a powerful story that brushes against taboos in our culture, especially having to do with males.

One aspect: men do have emotional lives and in our overly macho, testosterone-driven culture it is a reality that is well hidden. Applause to this writer in exploring this barely talked about subject while managing to be colorful, dry-witted and entertaining throughout the tale. (It is a quick-paced read with a distinct terseness to the writing that doesn't lack for editing)

To note: I wholeheartedly agree that Simon's story builds and builds as it goes along--getting better and better as it reaches its captivating conclusion. So much better than a lot of the reads out there lately. I could've easily passed this one up, but heard about it via two other good books that have also been out for a while and under-recognized: ANOTHER BULLS**T NIGHT IN SUCK CITY and A QUESTION OF ATTRACTION.

5 out of 5 stars A story that's still with me.......2007-06-24

I usually gravitate toward books of a spiritual inclination, most often non-fiction works that bring insight and inspiration into my day-to-day life. It's not that I don't like fiction, it's just my life seems to demand reads that will guide me in achieving truer consciousness. I came to read this novel when it was recommended to me by my mother who shares some of my spiritual sensibilities.

The first things that struck me, as I read along, was the way we get a view of Simon's inner world - the brooding teenage self-consciousness and his darkly humorous perspective on himself really made me laugh! What added to the humor is how Si's inner monologue contrasts with his outer world.

However, what seems at first to be a story of a clumsy teen trying to make his way to manhood turns into a deeper story. What I found was that situations gradually formulate in such a way that a clarity occurs that I was simply not expecting.

The culmination of the story brought the spiritual aspect so clearly and poignantly into focus that it gave me goose bumps. This resonated with me for weeks after I put the book down. I can't think of many other fictional works have had this profound an effect on me. Read it!

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and enlightening.......2007-05-12

I was delightfully surprised by this story and I'm not sure where to start in saying exactly what I liked about it--there was so much I enjoyed. One thing that especialy caught my eye was the elder and youth aspect that's woven throughout this novel.

Because I'm now a much older man, I see things I might have missed when I was far younger and not nearly as wise as age and time has brought me. I'm a grandfather to boys about Simon's age and I appreciated seeing not only this youth's perceptions of life, and the world around him, but the very workings of his inner thoughts. Many a time I have wondered what my 18 and 16 year old grandsons are thinking and there's so much silence that I end up speaking in actions by way of examples.

I find myself doing this because that's what men did for me when I was young. As you might imagine, reading this book made me re-think some things.

Actually, it basically showed me that there is a way inside these young men. (and I can't say how important I believe this is in today's world). That I can actually attempt addressing these teens or at least, asking better questions, could bring me a little closer to what might be a more realistic approach than I thought previously to reading this marvelous novel.

There's a lot of humor here. The characters are amusing, and the antics of Simon and the bevy of chracters that lace the story are, at times, laugh-out-loud-funny. But more importantly, there's an underlying wisdom that supports the story in its entirety.

I recommend this book for both young and old. I should know. As an elder, I've now been on both sides of life's spectrum.

5 out of 5 stars What did I like about Simon?.......2007-04-11

So you ask, what did I like about "Simon Lazarus"? Everything! Really. Since I don't get to read for pleasure as much as I would like, a "good read " is rare. Maybe the easiest way to express what I liked about reading "Simon" is to state up front what I usually find that I don't like in many books of fiction. First, the characters were not phony and predictable, nor was the plot. Instead, I found the main characters in "Simon" fresh, real and interesting. In many books I start, I never finish because the story is predictable, ie., I know how the story will end. In the case of "Simon" I kept turning the pages and couldn't put the book down. I also liked that the final chapters of the book made me feel sad and happy at the same time. Quite a feat.
In my humble opinion, someone should turn this wonderful book into a screenplay, I think it would make a great "coming of age movie". Periodic flashes to the French Quarter in New Orleans, constant references to popular music spanning generations all add to the main story. Now and then I try to decide who would play Simon and who would play his father????????? To nail on film the interactions between these two characters would be an emotional blockbuster. Of course Jack Nicholson would have to play Great Granddad. Thank you MA Kirkwood for this masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Stories - Very Humorous.......2006-06-12

Angel Lynn's The Warrior's Touch is a two story anthology featuring Master My Viking, and Passions of the Flame. Both stories had great characters that made me laugh. They were truly laugh out loud funny.

Master My Viking is the story of Sigurd who swears he will never forgive Hilde for stealing his clothes and making a mockery of him. He doesn't understand why she's always pestering him, it seems her goal in life. The frustration only increases after they get married, for she'll have nothing to do with him and he's fallen in love with her.

Passions of the Flame is a paranormal historical. Moros bargains with the faerie queen to lure the queen's half-fae daughter, Fallon, to the otherworld on the eve of Beltane. But not if Kane can help it. Though human, he professes to protect Fallon from Moros. Fallon's conversations with her best friend are hilarious... she's trying so hard to protect Kane from losing his mind over her ... which he'll gladly risk if it means losing his heart in the bargain.

5 out of 5 stars Two Great Stories in One.......2006-04-27

I first read Master My Viking as an e-book and the Viking antics, especially between the hero and heroine had me laughing throughout most of the story. Hilde and Sigurd have despised each other since they were children. Unknown to them their fathers have arranged their marriages and much to their dismay, its to each other. The fun begins from here as each decide they will never consummate the marriage, denying both their lust and growing love for each. Their constants pranks on each other are a source of great headaches not only for Hilde and Sigurd, but for their clans as well because the marriage between the two stubborn Vikings is the only way these two clans can solidify a treaty and live in peace. This isn't a typical historical romance. The entire story is a satire that uses humorous language. If you enjoy that sort of thing, you're going to love this. As a novella its a quick, but fun read.

Passions of the Flame a paranormal historical romance is written with a completely different style, revealing the authors diversified talent. Old world language is used and the historical facts about Beltane are very interesting and not overbearing. It's the story of a Gaelic warrior, Kane who has vowed to protect the half fairy, half human Fallon from an evil fairy, Bryan who is trying to claim her because of a bargain he made with the fairy queen, who happens to Fallon's mother. Fallon needs no protection and wants the attention of no man, but she can't ignore the feelings for Kane stirring inside of her. This story is full of passion as the title explains. The love scenes between Kane and Fallon are spicy but tender and I found myself in near tears when the fairy Bryan captures Fallon and rips her away from Kane. How can Kane pass into the "otherworld" to save her when he has no magical powers? And how will he convince the evil fairy to release his claim on Fallon. The ending holds a few surprises in this intriguing tale.

4 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars- -good characters and atmosphere; stilted dialogue........2007-05-04

The first 100 pages of the book had me worried. The prose is not always engaging, and the dialogue can be excruciatingly repetitive: "Come." "No." "Come on." "I won't." "Come with me." "I refuse." ....AAARGH! I suppose that the characters' stubbornness is meant to be charming, but I just found that it made the story drag.

Fortunately, the book is saved by its charming hero. I had gotten so used to misogynistic alpha male heroes that I forgot that there was any other kind! White Eagle is so sweet and loving and loyal that you can't help but sigh. The fact that the romance between hero and heroine started in their childhood made it feel all the more genuine.

The setting of the story is also rich with Blackfoot culture. If you're looking for a story in a Native American/frontier setting and you like your heroes sweet and romantic, then this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favourite books by Kay.......2001-09-23

This is so far one of my favourite books written by Karen Kay.

            5 out of 5 stars White Eagle's Touch.......2000-07-12

This is a brilliant book, well written and expertly plotted with in-depth characterizations. The relatonship between the white protagonist and the Indian hero is beautifully orchestrated. As Katrina is exposed to and learns about the culture of the Blackfoot Indians so does the reader. This book helped to remove a veil of ignorance I had regarding our native American heritage. That alone makes it a great read. It is also a mystery, not a who done it type, but involving how the conflict of cultures is going to be resolved on a personal basis. To my surprise, I found much of my own life mirrored in this book as we all run into conflicts regarding "now I'm supposed to" and what we really want to do in our hearts. You'll learn more about yourself through White Eagle's Touch.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, but the author has issues..........2006-04-03

The author obviously knows the Dredd universe well, and has written other books in the series which are good. This one however almost reads like an edition of ClassWar at times, various references to the Royal Family being inbred parasites, and bosses being evil exploiters of the masses leave us in no doubt as to his own political leanings, which is kind of a shame when it intrudes into the story. Overall though, a good read and worth buying, though I really cringed at the fact that he used the word "defenestrated" 3 times in the book, and got it wrong every time. It means to be thrown out of a window, from the french "fenetre" for window, it does *not* mean strangled. Buy a dictionary, Dave, and use a better proofreader.

                Book Description

In The Missional Leader, consultants Alan Roxburgh and Fred Romanuk give church and denominational leaders, pastors, and clergy a clear model for leading the change necessary to create and foster a missional church focused outward to spread the message of the Gospel into the surrounding community. The Missional Leader emphasizes principles rather than institutional forms, shows readers how to move away from “church as usual,” and demonstrates what capacities, environments, and mindsets are required to lead a missional church.

I'll be usng this book for a class that I am teaching. It covers the basics of "missional church" all right, but the strength of the book is chapters 3-5, where a change strategy for adopting missional church paradigm is lifted up. The last chapters, on leadership, I found less helpful in part because it is grounded not to the experience of a church becoming "missional" but to the author's evaluation instrument. The authors acknowledge but underestimate the membership loss that comes from adopting the missional paradigm: they estimate 10 to 15%, without systemmatic research I have found closer to 50% loss in several cases in the UCC.

Alan Roxburgh has finally pulled together all the pieces that he has been writing about and teaching for a number of years. Some of this stuff he taught in a course I took with him 14 years ago at McMaster. He highlights the character required, the skills required, and the processes required, of pastors seeking to innovate toward the missionally-engaged congregation. There are far too many people using the term "missional" to signify whatever they want. Alan and the others in the Gospel and Culture Network are giving us principles, practice and definitions that do justice to what Newbigin meant when he started some of us using the term long before it became vogue.
