Book Description

Some women can touch a man and heal like Jesus. The man who sees sunrise from a Belle woman's bed will swear he's been born again.

When it came to men, Charlotte Belle strictly ascribed to the law of catch and release. As soon as she could get a man out of her bed, she threw him back in the stream. No, Charlotte did not need a man. She had money. She had her driver, Mr. Nalls, for heavy lifting. Sex? Her pond was well stocked. What else does a woman need a man for? And so it comes as quite a surprise to Charlotte that she can not stop thinking about the Reverend Thomas Jones.

In The Rock Orchard, debut novelist Paula Wall uses sexy, lyrical prose -- and throws in a dash of magic -- to create a truly unique and hysterical love story.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fast, Funny, and Fascinating.......2007-06-15

I was new to Paula Wall's work, but I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Ms. Wall's narrative is wicked fast and utterly engaging. Come to think of it, so are her characters. That said, there is no hint of shallowness or taking the easy way out. Her characters are just that...characters, true to themselves and therefore intoxicatingly easy to believe in. Their observations about life, love, sex, religion, men and women ring true and will stay with you long after you've raced through the book. I was so impressed, I ran out and paid waaay too much for her second book, Wilde Women, which is also excellent. (Hint: Buy it from amazon.com and save yourself some money, but by all means, buy it, read it and enjoy.)

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful, and yet so disappointing.......2007-05-12

I was really enjoying this book. The character development was such that I could identify with several citizens in the town of Leaper's Fork and their fascination with the Belle women. I had several good chuckles, just like the reviews had promised. I was totally there in the town watching the characters interact, into the gossip, and wondering how the main characters would solve their dilemmas when wham, bam it ended. What a train wreck of an ending.

I hate it when it seems as if an author just got tired of writing a book and wraps everything up in just a few pages. This book is 244 pages long. I would have gladly read another 100-200 pages just to have walked the path with these characters as they fulfilled their destiny. Instead, I am meandering through the town watching everyone start to find their place in life when whoosh, Paula Wall writes in an event and seven pages (some of those only half pages) later the books is over. Everything is wrapped up nice and neat, but I didn't get to take the journey with the characters. So dissatisfying, so many lost laughs and tears. Sigh.

I'm glad I read it. I just wish I had stopped seven pages before the end.

5 out of 5 stars The Rock Orchard: A Novel.......2007-02-18

This was one of our book club books for February. We enjoyed the way Paula Wall intertwined her characters, story line and southern wisdom. This book brought forth a lively discussion on southern living, southern morals and some of the best quotes we have had in our book discussions.
We liked the way Charlotte gave advice to Mila and how it turned Mila's life around for the better. As Charlotte said, "we are what we are, until we decide to be different."

5 out of 5 stars A most enjoyable read.......2007-01-16

This is not normally the kind of book I would choose, but it jumped from the library shelf into my arms after I opened it and read a line or two. The author cannot just write; she can paint phrases on a page that are both profound and funny enough to make you laugh aloud. To the point of tears in a few spots. Good story, many surprises, good ending. If I could write like Paula Wall I could better express how much I enjoyed her writing as well as the story she told.

5 out of 5 stars Entrancing.......2006-08-07

I'm not going to rehash the plot or the characters-other reviewers have done that.I found this book entrancing.Laugh-out-loud funny in spots, uniquely spiritual in others and down-to-earth pragmatic in still others, the story was trulyspell-binding.

But,of all the things that made me love this book,it was the author's often unique phrasing that drew me in.Her choice of and arrangements of words often just pierced my heart.Made me want to use a highlighter!!If for no other reason, this makes a compelling reason to reread this book numerous times!

A standing ovation for this author's debut!

Book Description

Antonia Mannering refused to become an old maid!

She was a young woman with plans, and Lord Philip Ruthven played a large part in them. Though the childhood friends had not seen one another in years, she was perfectly aware that Philip had no lack of female companionship. But he had never married, and it was high time he did. If she could prove to him that she was capable of running his home and would not disgrace him in society, Antonia was certain he would propose a comfortable arrangement. But never had she expected that their hearts would somehow find their way into the bargain!

2 out of 5 stars Not quite it........2005-06-27

I was reading this book and I'm waiting for something to happen and it never quite gets there. I put the book down when I have nothing better to do, but I don't want to read it either. I find my self saying okay one more chapter and ... nothing. Antonia is fine, Philip is fine, but there is always a descritpion of her reaction to him, his to her, but it just falls flat after that. This book had great promise but Ms. Laurens just doesn't deliver. The pages just go on and on about nothing. It wasn't difficult to give up on this book in the middle of page 140. I don't know what happened after and I don't really care. I'm wondering why am I waisting time on this book when there are four new books waiting for me to get into. When you're in the midst of reading a book, you shouldn't be thinking of another book. I'm still a fan of Stephanie Laurens, but not of this particular book.

1 out of 5 stars A Thoroughly Boring Read.......2004-07-20

The book started alright but after a few pages I found myself yawning away and not at all connected to the characters in the book. I rolled my eyes every time Philip and Antonia bump into each other (and they do bump into each other an awful lot) for Laurens always drones in how attracted they were to each other. The drone goes on and on in a very unconvincing and irritating manner - how she felt electrified by his touch and vice-versa. I wonder why that had to be repeated so many times? The conversations are dull and the pace is draggy.

I really tried to plod through it, trying to think that maybe the story will pick up and things will get better. But it didn't. The plot and the dialogues went on monotonously.

I gave up half-way through. I just couldn't put myself through the torture of reading it to the end. It was that bad.

I guess romances are meant to be real, in that people need to be able to relate and empathise with the protagonists but at the same time, spicy conflicts should be included to keep us readers interested enough to finish the book.

To me, this book has missed the mark by a mile wide. A pity, the cover looked so attractive. Should have adhered to the well-used proverb - Don't judge a book by its cover ;)

3 out of 5 stars Beware.......2004-05-09

This is an older Stephanie Laurens book and different than her current books. Short, simple, and little to no senuality throughout. I did like the characters and subplot, but found myself skimming and not reading (which I don't like to do). I finished it, and was happy to do so.

2 out of 5 stars Insufficient romantic tension - book too long for the story.......2004-04-21

This is another of Laurens' earlier - and thus much better-written - novels. A Comfortable Wife pre-dates the Cynster series by some years, and thus carries much more in the way of an authentic `feel' about it. It is also far less formulaic than her later work. In that case, it should be much, much better as a novel - and yet it is not.

Antonia Mannering has been shut away in the country taking care of her sick mother for many years; thus, she is in her mid-twenties and still not presented and has not been in Society much at all. Now orphaned, she is visiting her godmother, the Dowager Countess Ruthven - who is stepmother to Antonia's childhood friend Philip, Lord Ruthven (*not* Lord Philip Ruthven, as the cover claims). Years ago, Philip and Antonia used to play together, but will he still remember her when they meet again? Antonia has decided that she would like to marry her old friend, and that she would make him the sort of comfortable wife he needs. In his early 30s now, he is a rake, but he needs to settle down and have an heir for his estate.

Philip, on first seeing Antonia again, is struck by her beauty and remembers how much he enjoyed her company. Reluctantly - for he suspects a plot - he is drawn to spend more and more time with her, and realises that he wants to marry her. (He's fallen in love with her, but - as with many of her other books - Laurens fails to *show* him falling in love, realising he's in love and deciding what to do about it). The proposal comes less than halfway through the book. Result: romantic tension at an end.

Antonia agrees to marry Philip, but only if he will keep their engagement a secret until she's been to London for the Little Season. As she explains, she's been out of Society for so long that she has no idea how to behave. She's worried that she'll be a bad wife to him, that she will somehow disgrace him by not knowing how to behave. Thus we have half a book-full of misunderstandings, mishaps and pointless silliness while Antonia finds her way through the traps of the Polite World. And just as we think the torture is over, yet another pointless misunderstanding occurs.

Laurens would have been better off making this book a novella, lengthening the courtship in the first few chapters and eliminating just about everything after the couple arrives in London - it would have been a far better story that way.

3 out of 5 stars a gentle romance.......2004-02-17

Ruthven and Antonia are more mature, less prone to flightiness than many romantic couples. One problem with the characterizations is that we are told that Ruthven is a rake, but we see no events that prove it. Antiona, however, is near perfect as a heroine: strong and warm, but wrong in some of her beliefs. They make a good couple, but I would have liked more evidence of their friendship as youngsters.

There's a minor subplot involving another couple and one with Ruthven being a role model for Antonia's younger brother, but the primary focus is definitely on the hero and heroine. There are no steamy love scenes, but a great deal of romance, friendship, honesty, and genuine affection. In some ways, it's a much more realistic story.

It's not Laurens' best book, but it's a welcome departure from the redundancy that eventually accompanies reading Cynster book after Cynster book. Published in 1997, A Comfortable Wife is more in the mold of Georgette Heyer than the newer, racier novels. I liked it, but rated it 3 stars for missed potential and it not being her best.

In a far-flung capitalistic empire among the stars, generations of colonization without a single contact with an intelligent, non-human species have reduced the colonial process to a franchise system. Amid the abuses of the system which inevitably follow, an old woman decides not to leave when her failed colony is evacuated, thinking the freedom to live alone and die in peace is worth any risk. In this entertaining but suspenseful first-contact novel, Elizabeth Moon's apt depiction of the interaction between old and young plays counterpoint to the interaction between human and alien.

For forty years, Colony 3245.12 has been Ofelia’s home. On this planet far away in space and time from the world of her youth, she has lived and loved, weathered the death of her husband, raised her one surviving child, lovingly tended her garden, and grown placidly old. And it is here that she fully expects to finish out her days–until the shifting corporate fortunes of the Sims Bancorp Company dictates that Colony 3245.12 is to be disbanded, its residents shipped off, deep in cryo-sleep, to somewhere new and strange and not of their choosing. But while her fellow colonists grudgingly anticipate a difficult readjustment on some distant world, Ofelia savors the promise of a golden opportunity. Not starting over in the hurly-burly of a new community . . . but closing out her life in blissful solitude, in the place she has no intention of leaving. A population of one.

With everything she needs to sustain her, and her independent spirit to buoy her, Ofelia actually does start life over–for the first time on her own terms: free of the demands, the judgments, and the petty tyrannies of others. But when a reconnaissance ship returns to her idyllic domain, and its crew is mysteriously slaughtered, Ofelia realizes she is not the sole inhabitant of her paradise after all. And, when the inevitable time of first contact finally arrives, she will find her life changed yet again–in ways she could never have imagined. . . .

A book in three parts. A colony on a planet pulls out, as their sponsor has sold it to someone else. One elderly woman decides to stay behind.

She enjoys her freedom, to start with, and starts investigating things she couldn't do before.

Eventually, she starts a relationship with the natives of the planet, which becomes important when yet another corporate survey team turns up wanting to use the planet.

I have all of the books written by Ms. Moon that I have heard of and really like everything of hers I have read. I am waiting anxiously for her next one "Engaging the Enemy".

When her husband Humberto died, Ofelia became her son's dependent in the eyes of Sims Bancorp. Forty years after she helped to found Colony 3245.12, all of her children but Barto are dead along with their father; and Ofelia tolerates her domineering daughter-in-law Rosara as best she can. When Sims Bancorp sends a ship to withdraw the colonists, after deciding to abandon its unprofitable colony and cede its license to the world that Ofelia now considers her home, the company demands extra payment for relocating the useless old woman who will probably die in cryosleep, anyway. Luckily for Ofelia, though, she's scheduled for a later shuttle than Barto and Rosara. When she slips away from the village to hide in the nearby, still untouched alien forest, the only two people who would protest her absence are already in the cryotanks. Soon the ship is gone, leaving Ofelia alone. And that's just fine with her.

The old woman revels in her solitude, because this is the first time in her long life that she's been free from the demands and restrictions placed on her by others. She tends her garden, competently maintains the village's power plant, and laughs when she throws her last pair of detested shoes into the recycler. Then another company's ship enters orbit, and starts to insert a colony at a location thousands of miles from Ofelia's village. At which time she, and the newly arrived colonists, find out that this world has indigenous intelligent life after all.

The friend who recommended this book to me was right. Ofelia, a person who had little worth to start with in her society's eyes - a housewife and mother, educated no more than necessary to perform her expected tasks - has no value at all now, in age and physical infirmity. But what she does have, a naturally intelligent old woman's experience and wisdom and insight, turn out to be exactly what the unexpected and dangerous first contact situation on her adopted world requires. Grumpy and no longer willing to suffer fools gladly - still savoring life, but no longer reluctant to risk leaving it behind if that's the price of being free at last to make her own choices - Ofelia is at once a fully realized individual, and a worthy representative of all the other wise and salty old women whose value too few Human societies appreciate. Or even comprehend.

        A thought-provoking delight!

5 out of 5 stars A classic of Science Fiction and a great human story.......2005-01-17

I could not disagree more with the last two reviewers.

First, it may spend some time with Ophelia and her solitary existence, and I actually put the book down for a while because of that, but I loved the book in the end.

OK, it may poke experts in the eye, but being and "expert" myself I can only say it is really overrated and in general we overrate ourselves. There are idiots and twits in every profession, mine included.

But, it tells a very interesting and captivating story about a little old lady in very improbable circumstances who, in the end, finds herself and a new meaning in her life.

Read it... I think you will enjoy ie.

          Description:
Plants with highly specialized pollination systems may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of habitat fragmentation. The sub-canopy tree Oxyanthus pyriformis subsp. pyriformis has deep tubular flowers (c. 90 mm in length) that are specialized for pollination by long-tongued hawkmoths. Existing natural populations of this taxon appear to be confined to two suburban habitat fragments in the city of Durban, South Africa. Breeding system experiments showed that the trees are self-incompatible and thus completely reliant on pollen vectors for sexual reproduction. Hawkmoths were rarely observed to visit flowers, despite intensive monitoring over four seasons from 1997 to 2003. Fruit set as determined from examination of more than 150,000 flowers at the two sites was extremely low (0.04% and 0.07% of flowers), but increased to more than 70% in flowers that were hand-pollinated with pollen from another tree. This >1000-fold increase in the likelihood of fruit production following pollen-supplementation indicates that trees experience severe pollen-limitation of fruit set. Natural fruit set is so low that only a few dozen fruits were recorded in each population during two years of monitoring. This is of concern as O. pyriformis trees are dependent solely on seeds for recruitment. Demographic surveys showed that remaining natural populations have fewer saplings than adult trees and only two seedlings for every adult tree. The long-term viability of reintroduced populations of O. pyriformis is also in doubt, as we observed an almost complete lack of recruitment in a population that was established in a seemingly suitable forest site 20 years ago. Regular hand-pollination and, in some instances, further planting of saplings, may be the only way to safeguard these populations.

            Description:
The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) has been included in a national list of priority forest genetic resources as a target for conservation and management in Lebanon, a country bordering the eastern Mediterranean shores. To provide baseline information for the development of a conservation strategy for the species, the current status of remaining semi-natural carob populations in Lebanon was assessed through an ecogeographic survey, a bio-climatic distribution study, and a genetic analysis. Field explorations were carried out throughout the reported natural distribution range of the target taxon (@?750m altitude) and all areas where carob was found, were mapped. Data including land use, main associated vegetation, major threats, percentage of grafted trees, and landform were recorded for each population. Climate data were interpolated as functions of geographic parameters to create maps for mean minimum temperature of the coldest month (m), mean maximum temperature of the warmest month, and annual precipitation. These were then used to calculate the pluviometric quotient (pmq) as a measure of aridity. The largest populations encountered in the study were targeted for molecular analysis. Polymorphic amplification products of RAPD were analyzed for 10-15 trees from each population. The ecogeographic survey revealed that most remaining populations are very small consisting of low numbers of individuals. Anthropomorphic activities such as coppicing, grafting and/or grazing were evident in all populations, however, it was clear that these populations were abandoned and had become part of the Mediterranean maquis vegetation. Overlays of soil maps and carob distribution data indicated that the species occurs preferentially on Terra Rossa soils, which have typically poor agricultural capability. An examination of the climatic conditions in which carob could be found showed that the distribution of carob is limited by (m) of less than 1^oC and a pmq below 60. Analysis of RAPD products indicated that the populations did not cluster based on geographic proximity and revealed a significant difference between and within populations suggesting that the remaining populations constitute a valuable germplasm. The prospects for conservation of carob in the Lebanese context are discussed.

                5 out of 5 stars clear pointing.......2007-03-09

for those seemingly few and far between who are actually curious about who and what they are, about what it is that is looking out from their eyes in this immediate moment, this book is a powerful pointing to that being-ness that lies outside of thought, prior to thought, as it's source and background. this was my first go-round with bob and his material, and i found it a clear, specific, and extremely helpful pointing-out. while i concur with other reviewers that aspects of the message repeat, i found that to be necessary aspect of the teaching for a few reasons. one, everything that arises in thought points us away from the simple fact that you already ARE; that this god-nature or pure consciousness or light or beingness or presence-awareness (to use bob's term) or whatever you choose to call it, already always IS. you could say it is present now, but where being-consciousness is concerned, now is too slow---by the time you register the thought "now" (and "now" is just a thought, just another pointing), you already were, and are. thought is not fast enough to catch it. being-consciousness is first, primary---and thought by nature draws attention away from That into its weird world of time and things. so i found the repeating important to bring attention back to that which is primary. also, these advaita types are always on about "there is no person here, there's no one here" ect... i've found that if you're not viewing from that place, those ideas of no person here can really annoy you. people just don't like to hear that they don't exist, imagine that. hearing it in the context of bob's message caused me to inquire into it this time, and ask myself "how could this be true?" by taking on what he said and trying it on for myself, i have to confess, outside of thought (pictures and words based in memory) and sensations in the body, i have not been able to locate a solid self. so far, just this THIS. also good to hear from people who sat with nisargadatta, as he's a favorite of mine. the book is a collection of talks, so it's not an attempt to be particularly literary. if what drives you in your spiritual life is who and what you are essentially, this book will speak to you.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, no frills, to the point.......2006-10-12

This is the most straightforward presentation of nonduality that I have read. Uncomplicated, no wasted words, no frills. He says the same thing over and over again relentlessly with no wandering off the point. That's what I like about this book. The point is a simple one, and he presents it simply.

1 out of 5 stars bob needs a new boat........2006-08-09

Put simply. Bob needs a new boat. This one has massive holes in it, It just does not float. Looks good, sounds good but when examined sinks rapidly. No depth, no real answers just the same old stuff . Bob says it is simple. Thats strange as hardly anyone he has as disciples get what hes talking about. Is he such a hopeless teacher or maybe his product is worthless. My advice to anyone thinking of getting this book is to get it.( if you can easily afford it). Then make your own decision.

                1 out of 5 stars Bad.......2006-07-19

Unlike one of the two reviewers who give it five stars I read the whole book. I realise Bob is trying to put non duality philosophy into his own words. Unfortunately he just repeats the same words all the time even to questions that are not related. He avoids difficult/deep questions by waiting until another question is put. I finished the book then binned it.

5 out of 5 stars Very direct. Great!.......2006-06-25

I have only read parts of this book so far but it is great. Sailor Bob points to what we really are in such a direct, easy to understand way. I have read Eckhart Tolle, Leo Hartong, Byron Katie, Gangaji, and Adyashanti, all of whom I really loved and enjoyed. I find Sailor Bob and his student John Wheeler's books the easiest and most direct to "get." If you have read any other non-dual authors and still trying to "get it" Sailor Bob's books might be for "you."
