Book Description

Leonora Carrington, the distinguished British-born Surrealist painter who now makes her home in Mexico City, is also a writer of extraordinary imagination and charm. Exact Change launched a program of reprinting her fiction with what is perhaps her best loved book. The Hearing Trumpet is the story of 92-year-old Marian Leatherby, who is given the gift of a hearing trumpet only to discover that what her family is saying is that she is to be committed to an institution. But this is an institution where the buildings are shaped like birthday cakes and igloos, where the Winking Abbess and the Queen Bee reign, and where the gateway to the underworld is open. It is also the scene of a mysterious murder. Occult twin to Alice in Wonderland, The Hearing Trumpet is a classic of fantastic literature that has been translated and celebrated throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars mind twisting, superb surrealism.......2007-08-21

i have loved leonora carrington's paintings for a long time, and only recently got a chance to read this book. i finished it quickly.
what struck me was how fast it moves, which for someone taking it at face value might ruin the whole thing - - but for one looking at the story running through it that ISN'T in the book, it becomes haunting, dark, disturbing and profoundly sorrowful even as the story itself soars to the heights of fantasy. i can't say too much more without ruining the book, but if you understand what i believe she's trying to say happened, then you will agree with me about the haunting-dark-disturbing thing.
on the surface it still has a lot to please - - witchcraft, goddesses, the kabbalah, mysteries both domestic and occult, black comedy and sweeping adventure. the main character is as loveable and charming as she is eccentric, and she's a whole lot of eccentric. i think this may be an overlooked classic.
and the line drawings by carrington's son (i think?) are killer! i'm getting a tattoo of one of the frontispiece, marian with her trumpet.

The first page will tell you if you will love it or hate it. I loved it. It's way out there but she strikes a cord with those open minded enough to question the established way of thinking about old age, women and religion. Her sense of humor is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure book.......2006-10-16

This fantasy must be among the most magical ever written since the beginning
of human history. No wonder Leonora Carrington starts with same initials as
Lewis Carroll!

5 out of 5 stars The most amazing book i've ever read.......1999-09-22

Since JRR Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings, I don't think I've come across another work that has so enraptured me. It is truly a modern fairy tale, and one that can easily be re-read a hundred times over. (It's been awhile since I read this and I don't have my book with me, but I'll try to be as accurate as I can with the names of the characters.) You can tell from the start that this isn't your conventional fantasy romp: the heroine Marian Leatherby isn't a youthful, beautiful princess but an old lady with family problems. She doesn't journey to distant lands to find magic and adventure; instead, all the action takes place in an old folks home. Along the way Leonora Carrington slyly pokes fun at patriarchal myths and traditions. 'Galahad', a name familiar to us from Arthurian legends, reappears in THT not as some dashing, valiant do-gooder but, if my memory serves me correctly, as Marian's ineffectual, unpleasant son. So much for modern chivalry, Carrington seems to say. Yet while she debunks these old legends, she creates new ones, drawing upon mythology and fantasy alike to people her story with strong female characters and ancient Goddesses. Whimsical, magical, entertaining, thought-provoking. I won't say much more, you'll have to read it for yourself to find out just how excellent it is. And yes, do put your own copy under lock and key!!

5 out of 5 stars like a wild fairy tale.......1998-07-15

Leonora Carrington is awsome as an author - she doesn't let her imagination be chained by convention or by anything. What a vivid, strange world these characters live in. Marian (the main character) is awsome herself; full of character and spirit. Everyone I've lent this book to has enjoyed it. If it has a fault, it's that it ends too soon.

            Book Description

Spunky, sweet-natured Jessica Monroe is thirty-four years old and perfectly happy being single. Her girlfriends, however, disapprove. And when they secretly place a personal ad on a hot singles website on her behalf, Jess is reluctantly hurtled into the topsy-turvy world of online dating. A laugh-out-loud whirlwind of disastrous dates ensues, from Simon, who seems dreamy over e-mail but ditches her at the dinner table, leaving her with the bill, to Graham, a self-described “Ferrari driver” who turns out to be a car salesman—with several (old, fat, bald, creepy, cheap, stuck-up) men in between. When an unforeseen event turns her world upside down, Jess starts to wonder if the qualities she thinks she wants in a man—gorgeous, wildly successful, with a taste for fun and the finer things—really are what she ultimately needs . . . and whether, as a new mystery suitor appears in her e-mail inbox, Cupid has other possibilities up his sleeve.

Told with Jane Moore’s sparkling wit, wisdom, and sass, Love @ First Site is an irresistible tale about what happens when we start to look for love between the lines on a computer screen—and a winning, unputdownable look at contemporary romance.

            One

Cuddly, Ferrari-driving 38-year-old, GSOH, travels extensively with job, WLTM fun-loving woman and see where life's wide open road takes us.

It's 8 p.m. and a particularly gripping East Enders' plotline is reaching its long, drawn-out conclusion in homes across the country.

I'd like nothing more than to be curled up on the sofa watching it, with a glass of chilled white wine in one hand, a tube of salt and vinegar Pringles in the other.

But instead, I'm on a blind date with Chewbacca.

Cuddly? The man is a walking rug, with the notable exception of the top of his head, a shining dome that gives way to an ample forehead you could show movies on. In wide screen and with subtitles.

"Shall we order?" he says, snapping his fingers in a rapid-fire motion at the waitress. With each click, my neck sinks further into my body.

"Just a main course for me, thanks," I simper. Please God, don't let him order one of those complicated dishes that takes twenty minutes to prepare.

Of course, if this was my friend Madeleine, she would have established at first sight that her date could be tried under the Trades Descriptions Act, excused herself to the loo, then slipped out of a back door never to return.

But I'm too nice to do that. And cowardly. I'm worried he might track me down through my e-mail address and start stealing underwear from my rotary washing line, shortly before putting it on and turning up semi-naked at my parents' Ruby Wedding celebrations. OK, so I have an overactive imagination, but you get my drift.

Nope. Coward that I am, I'm stuck with Yeti man for at least the next hour.

"So!" I say brightly, desperate to resuscitate a conversation that's already flatlining, "you travel a lot?"

"Yes, I do." Chewy--otherwise known as Graham--says this with the measured gravitas of a man who's just announced he's head of a global peacekeeping crusade. He doesn't show any signs of elaborating.

            "Abroad?" I persevere.

"Sometimes." Leaning across the table with a large lump of bread in his hand, he wipes it, Neanderthal style, across the top of the butter and rams it into his mouth. The things you see when you haven't got your gun, as my old grandma used to say.

"So, tell me about some of the places you've been to." Oh God, I have suddenly metamorphosed into a daytime television presenter. It can only be a matter of minutes before I'm asking him his favorite color.

"Not much to tell." He shrugs, cramming yet more bread into his mouth. A large blob impales itself on his stubbly chin. "Mostly Germany, occasionally France, but most of the time I travel around Britain."

It's a personal rule of mine never to resort to the "what do you do?" question within half an hour of meeting someone for the first time. But on this occasion, the word desperate doesn't cover it.

            "So what do you do?"

"I work with cars." He sits back in his chair, which creaks ominously, and I get my first glimpse of the sizable paunch he's been hiding under the table.

"Ah, hence the Ferrari! I don't know much about cars, but even I know that's an impressive one to own." I inwardly sigh with relief, thinking that, finally, I have dredged up something that may inflame an enthusiastic response from this world-beating dullard.

But no. In fact, he looks a little sheepish, and a vein on the side of his hairless temple starts to pulsate rather noticeably. "I don't actually own one, I just drive them occasionally."

"What, like Michael Schumacher?" I laugh. He doesn't reciprocate.

"My car company sells them." He clicks his fingers at the waitress again, indicating for her to fill up our wine glasses.

            "Your car company," I e

This book was witty, funny, and romantic. I really enjoyed it, and there were times I wouldnt put the book down :-). It was fun, and I look forward to reading more books from her.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for a single girl .......2006-06-25

I just want to say that this book is witty and cute for single girls who are on the computer a lot. Even if you aren't, it will make you change your mind about internet dating. the main character is a doll!!! She is soo cute, with her self conscious way of viewing herself , yet shows confidence enough to tell these ignorant guys where to shove their insensitivity.
It is a great book. It took me only a few days to finish, and i work 2 jobs. I recommend it to any young female who has dated onthe internet...

1 out of 5 stars Hits every cliche and then some - avoid like the plague.......2006-05-27

It's not that Jane Moore can't write - it's just she's assumes you, the reader, hasn't read very much. And that you are probably fairly thick too. Thus the reader is nudged along from one limp scene to another with painful condescension, the whole dreary chick lit package sprinkled with yesterday's tabloid newspaper puns. "Love At First Site" is about as frothy as the lint from your tumble drier.

            2 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2005-09-12

The premise, the title, and even the cover art are all misleading - this book does not really explore the world of Internet dating beyond 3 or 4 `dates.' The main character, Jess, is 34, single, and envious of her sister Olivia, and Olivia's perfect marriage and children. As a birthday gift, Jess receives a subscription to an online dating site and manages to go on about 4 dates during the course of a year. Not stunning odds, and not very interesting reading either. Maybe it's just me, but I really thought this book was going to focus more on the dates and less on Jess and her sister. In the midst of the book, the story takes a drastic turn and becomes very `deep' in terms of the storyline; the storyline, which involves Olivia, just didn't gel with the rest of the book and its upbeat attitude. It was as if a large cloud came over the book midway through and it was hard to get the spirit of the book back. Jess does change throughout the course of the year, but with only 4 dates as a frame of reference, her changes are not that believable and neither is her eventual romance. I just thought this book was poorly written (which, aside from its poor storyline, is illustrated by all the swearing). Waste of your time.

            5 out of 5 stars Definately a read!.......2005-08-18

If you like to read a book that is "light" or a beach read like they say this is definately the one! I liked the book coz it was not just about some really hot girl who is "misunderstood" & then finds a hot guy......happily ever after story. The book deals with a ton of things, family member going through cancer, bieng a people pleaser & most imp you don't choose the guy coz he's hot but because he's a good man at heart.

            Loved the book!

            1 out of 5 stars I hated this book.......2004-05-02

I loved the Area 51 Series, but this book was just a disappointment. Looks like the author is now just milking what was a good series and taking advantage of readers who buy his books.

Am definitely not buying the next book Area 51 - Legends.

4 out of 5 stars Vampires From Outer Space.......2004-02-17

Or maybe that should be "Vampires Whose Parents are From Outer Space and Have Molded Human History for the Past 10,000 Years." Or... Well, you get the message. This is a concoction of alien invasion and Dracula, which, fortunately, was written by an author capable of making a story enjoyable reading even when it is completely unbelievable.

This is the eighth in Robert Doherty's Area 51 series, and in many ways, it is one of the best. The original series, up through The Truth, suffers from the persistence of the characters. Doherty's forte is not character development, and one can only stand a character endlessly repeating the same behaviors for a certain length of time. With Nosferatu, we get an entirely new case, human and Airlia scion included.

The Airlia, we discover, bred with humans to create a hybrid that they could use as blood bags. Having only half Airlia blood, they could provide nourishment to their masters while feeding on humans. There are very few of these 'vampires,' all kept in the complex under Giza and the pyramids. During a revolt, Nosferatu, Vampyr, and Nekhbet manage to escape. By dint of determination and the ability to sleep for thousands of years. Nosferatu and Vampyr manage to outlast the Airlia gods. Nekhbet was injured in the escape and cannot be awakened until a new supply of Airlia blood is found. Nosferatu is the one that loves her, but Vampyr seeks only one thing - revenge for what the Airlia and their human servants have done.

Gradually the story moved into the present, making a shambles of much of human history in the process. Doherty has a tendency to explain everything that ever happened as the result of the interference of the Airlia and the vampires. Personally, I find this excessive, but Doherty manages to keep this from becoming a show stopper, weaving everything together into an effort that is completely satisfactory. The only other flaw is that the conclusion is rushed mercilessly. This isn't a gradually build-up, but a sudden shift of gears. Unwarned, the reader is suddenly in the middle of the conclusion without the necessary mental preparation.

Still, a good story, even if it lacks greatness. Most people don't expect alien invations to be great literature (despite some glaring exceptions). What they do expect is suspense and entertainment, and these are the core of Doherty's success. This story can be treated as a stand-alone effort, but reading the preceding volumes will enhance the readers understanding of the baroque infrastructure underlying this tale.

            4 out of 5 stars AREA 51: NOSFERATU.......2004-01-14

This book is about a vampire named Nosferatu, and he is the main character. It starts out in ancient Egypt where him and his loved are locked up in a tomb with 2 others. Some people free the 2 others his love and him. While they try to escape they are caught and 2 of them were captured. The 2 were his love and the others sister; Vampyr is the one who lost his sister. Vampyr and Nosferatu escape but Vampyr sister was killed and ran away with vengeance towards humanity and the Airlia Gods. Nosferatu's love was captured and promised to save her someday. When he finally saved after so many centuries he discovered he needed Airlia blood to live eternity with his blood. Throughout the rest of the novel Nosferatu searches for the blood and runs into many troubles in his journey for the Airlia blood as in traveling distant lands and running into his kind Vampyr.

I think this novel kicked some serious butty. The main part I kept reading this book is because it was about vampires and there was alot of gore. There were many battles that took place in this book as well as extra action. The ways the vampires are described in this book are some new things as well as things people would already know. Like their thirst for blood and poor immunity towards the sunlight.

The reason this book was good is the action the adventure and the way the author wrote it. This book also takes place in the future as well as the past of the characters. In the prologue there was this part in the book where a women is riding in a helicopter and it lands in a middle of a forest and there she gets off and waiting there is a vehicle with Vampyr inside, he gets out and Vampyr says" Run or you will die" and the women is puzzled by what he just said and she started running but soon Vampyr chased her down in the forest like he is playing with his food.

Another reason I picked this book is that it doesn't stay in just one place or with one character throughout the book. The book jumps usually between what Nosferatu is doing and what Vampyr is doing, or with some of the other small characters. There are real cool parts in the book as well as war between the Spartans and Athens in a time where Vampyr fought in.

I recommend this book too people interested in vampires, action, gore, the past, magic, and war. The majority of this book takes place in the past. There is gore description whenever the vampires hunt for blood or when Vampyr gets his arms cut of for eating a women and her children. The only magic I remember in the book is in a huge battle against a powerful I like to say a wizard and his army of ruffians. The Wizard uses his power to make lighting bolts, which destroy most of the enemy. I mainly recommend this book to people interested in vampires and Nosferatu and his journey.

                Book Description

Although the non-Muslim world is not as familiar with the Hadith as with the Quran, it is the Hadith that is the most important single source of Islamic laws, precepts, and practices. Ever since the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad, millions of Muslims have attempted to mimic his dress, diet, hairstyle, toilet mores, and sexual and marital habits in the hope of being more like the man who walked in the ways of Allah. Whether one visits Saudi Arabia or Central Asia, India or Malaysia, Muslims by the millions can be found conforming to the Prophet's views on the veil, polygamy, and ablution.

The Hadith consistutes a voluminous literature. Every word from Muhammad's lips, every nod or shake of his head, every one of his gestures and mannerisms was important to his followers. They remembered these as best they could and passed these "traditions" on from generation to generation.

Using the Sahih Muslim, a massive work consisting of 7,190 traditions divided into 1,243 chapters, Ram Swarup quotes representative selections that touch upon the main tenets of Islamic faith: purification, prayer, fasting, pilgrimage, marriage and divorce, crime and punishment, religious wars (jihad), paradise, hell, repentance, and many others.

According to Muslim theologians, Islam is a "complete" and "completed" religion that deals not only with theological matters but also with all aspects of the believer's life. It is equally political and military. It has much to do with statecraft, and it has a very specific view of the world peopled by "infidels" or non-Muslims. Since most of the world is still "infidel," it is very important for those who are not Muslim to understand Islam. UNDERSTANDING THE HADITH provides many insights into the mind-set of the typical Muslim who is raised on these traditions.

4 out of 5 stars A Mix: Great Facts, Analysis, and Sourcing along with Author's Biases.......2007-01-14

First things first, the author Ram Swarup makes clear his personal distate for Islam, which unfortunately is a very unprofessional way of presenting the text. However, with that said, don't throw the baby out with the bath water. This is still a great scholarly work in so far as it acquaints English-speaking readers with primary sources (including an extensive bibliography) for Hadith/Sunnah. Many non-Muslims often make the mistake of assuming that the Quran is the sole authoritative text creating Islam, when in actuality the Quran (which Muslims believe to be the word of God as revealed through Muhammad) is inseparable from the Hadith/Sunnah, which are the anecdotal traditions, practices, opinions, and other quotations of Muhammad and his early Muslim community. The Hadith also lays out much of the basis for the Shari'ah legal system.

Personally, I think this book is helpful to both Muslims and those wishing to understand Islam. Muslims will find that this book will help them to anticipate and respond to arguments commonly brought against Islam, while non-Muslims will come to better understand many apsects of social practices of Muslims that are not addressed in the Quran.

While displaying many prejudices, the author, to his credit, does indeed address some of the polemics of Islam's position on various issues, including its treatment of non-Muslims. For example, traditionally, non-Muslims alone are subject to the "jizya" poll tax, are forbidden to carry weapons, may not ride on horseback, must wear clothing identifying them as non-Muslims, may not build new churches or temples (they were only allowed to repair old ones), may not ring church or temple bells, and are forbidden from engaging in public worship or public religious festivals. In the countries of the Gulf, the latter restrictions are even today tightly enforced, which creates a rift in relations in so far as Muslims in Western nations are free to build mosques and publicly worship while freedom of religions is banned in many Islamic-majority countries.

Other tenets of Islam presented in the book that non-Muslims may take issue with include the concept that under certain circumstances it is permissible for a man to strike his wife and that apostasy is punishable by death. Muslims will find these topics challenging and intresting because they beg the question of whether certain Hadis (singular for Hadith) can be de-selected as being irreconcilable with universal principles of human rights, while still retaining an overall faith in Islam. This is not a new issue, but will encourage reflection, further study, and healthy debate on topics that commonly recur in inter-faith dialogues.

Another area that only receives cursory treatment in the book is how Islamic concepts of predetermination (fate) and lack of complete free will intersect with the penal system under Islamic law. Ram Swarup does not make an in-depth study of these sub-topics, but does present some basic ideas.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the Hadith, but I would also advise them to take Ram Swarup's commentary with a big grain of salt. Just as some great medieval scientists dabbled in alchemy, so Swarup's thorough scholarship is at times tainted by his prejudices.

                1 out of 5 stars Anti-Islam Book.......2006-08-15

This book is an anti-Islamic work. One can tell by just reading the couple of pages available to you. The author tries to say that Muhammad tried to say he was higher than God. Which is blasphemous and what the Prophet preached against. Muhammad was against putting up to Godly status and he said so as does the Qur'an. He was like the other Prophets, but a mortal human being.

                1 out of 5 stars Very misleading.......2006-04-01

The title and blurb of this book are very misleading. I started reading it thinking that it would be an intellectual review and summary of the hadith. What ensued was a very offensive ranting of the author's opinions on Islam, coupled with quotes from the hadith that were altered to fit his purposes. The author obviously has negative views towards Islam, and created negative interpretations for every hadith mentioned. There were also many blunt, overarching statements about Islamic life and practices that were simply untrue. This book is very insulting to the Islamic religious traditions, and if you are looking for unbiased information on the hadith I strongly suggest that you look elsewhere. Nothing in this book reflects the true teachings of Islam.

1 out of 5 stars Sin is doubly rewarding?.......2006-01-07

"Sin is doubly rewarding?" This is a hadith? Which source? This is in direct opposition to Quran. Nothing in hadith can be contrary to Quran. Unfortunately, lack of diligence with respect to sources of hadith despite hundreds of years of work in Islamic studies makes the intention of the author clear. Read it and judge it yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Ram Swarup explains the islamic moral code using the Hadiths .......2005-10-15

A glance at the negative reviews on this site is most infomative. The review titled 'Intellectual Fraud' is clearly written by someone who never opened the book. Ram quotes plenty of Hadiths to support his arguments and these Hadiths are of course available for all to see from numerous Islamic Sources.

Contrary to what certain reviewers have written, the book, in its introduction does mention the concept of chains or 'isnad' which traces back the hadiths to the prophet. A weak or strong hadith is judged on how many links exist between the narrator and Mohammed. The Sahih Muslim hadith explored in this book is a major collection just like Sahih Bukhari and therefore in every way 'islamically correct'. Just because some reviewers are uncomfortable with some of the relevations, it does not make them any less true. Mohammed killed, approved of the rape of enslaved prisoners, married a 6 year old girl, approved the murder of poets who didn't agree with him, arranged for the beheading of 800 jewish prisoners at Banu Quraiza and described how looted booty should be shared. These facts are not derived from weak Hadiths, and no muslim scholar can dispute this.

Maybe a better title for this book would be, "Understanding Islamic Morality Through the Hadiths". Facts are stubborn things and any muslim who tries to refute this boook presented in the this book using Islamic Sources will have great difficulty. This is why they can only resort to personal attacks on the author.

                  Book Description

The Hadith (traditions) are the most important source of Islamic teaching and ideology after the Qur'an. These traditions, derived from the life of the Prophet Muhammad, form a body of sacred texts faithfully handed down in the Muslim community from its earliest days. They function as a basic source on the history of early Islam, whether illuminating the life of the Prophet, giving the first commentaries on the Qur'an or operating as a source of Islamic law.
