Worths to read again and again.......2000-07-06
To those who wants to know more about typography, this book teaches you enough required knowledge so you can study more advanced subjects. It offers a brief but useful introduction on the history of typography. I'll recommend this book to anyone who is interested in typography.
Time for an update........2000-06-09
I have reviewed and ordered this book as a text for my Typography students. It is very encompassing and thorough, providing many examples of typefaces and type usage. I probably would have given this review 5 stars if this was not the same publication that appeared in 1992. This book is worth keeping refreshed. The authors have gone to great lengths to provide excellent "contemporary" examples, so after 8 years it is time to address the issue of contemporary. Still, it is the best I could find out of many, and have adopted it for my course.

Book Description
Animal lovers everywhere adore Patrick McDonnell's charming but pointed Mutts. The strip strikes a delicate balance between lighthearted fun and social commentary-on the human condition as well as the animal world.
The deceptively simple comic follows the adventures of Earl the dog and Mooch the cat, an unlikely best-friend team, and Shtinky Puddin', Sourpuss, Guard Dog, and Crabby.
Patrick's distinctive cartooning style effectively relays the all-too-real concerns of his characters with entertaining, clever, laugh-out-loud banter.
Infodad.com describes Mutts as "humane and funny and gentle and caring and heartfelt and-did we mention funny?" The site goes on to say that the strip "includes enough hijinks and outstanding art (yes, art!) to please anyone with a taste for animals and amusement."
Mutts has been syndicated by King Features since 1994 and enjoys a circulation of more than 500 daily newspapers. Muttscomics.com, the strip's official Web site, has experienced great popularity since its launch in 2003.

GUARANTEED LAUGHS ... .......2006-01-27
Who doesn't love MUTTS? Patrick McDonnell's endearable little critters have stolen my heart.
I'm not a mutt, but I often wish I were Earl the dog with a lovable friend like Mooch the cat ... a friend who could make me laugh and keep me "up" in this crazy, mixed-up world where laughs are often hard to come by.
Come to think of it, I do have TWO friends like that and when we get together we have more fun than Toonies chasing Mischief-Makers (from the YA novel, The Toonies Invade Silicon Valley). Neighbors in the beachtown of Capitola, CA, we were the "scourge" of the beach crowd. My friends are nicknamed Boobs and Fang, while I'm Legs to them.
But getting back to this book, it's hilarious, and will cure your ills for sure. Delightful!!! LOL :>) ... or is it ( >: ...???
Happy reading!
Mutts X--an instant comic strip classic.......2005-04-20
Just as the other books in Patrick McDonnell's "Mutts" body of work resonate with humor, whimsy, thoughtfulness, and wit, so too does his latest compilation, "Mutts X." Mooch and Earl and their environment, causes, pals, and activities are explored using a droll eye and deft pen. It's amazing how McDonnell can communicate thought-provoking ideas through such deceptively simple characters. It's all here--again: silliness, sensibility, and sensitivity. For total Mutts immersion, be sure to check out the official website: www.muttscomics.com.

We Love This Book!.......2007-06-01
I thought this book was wonderful and creative. It's a great way to introduce idoms to children. It really helped me explain to my kids how words or expressions can have double meanings. It's amazing just how many of these we use everyday in the English language! My four and six year old really understand this now having read this cute little book of examples. Also, great job to these children and teachers who were able to publish a book they wrote themselves! ...now that's thinking "outside the box!"
Why I Like This Book.......2006-10-08
My third grade teacher in my school in Connecticut read this book to our class. The parts I liked best were the expressions. I liked the first expression "Don't put your foot in your mouth." I also liked the last expression which was "Zip your lip." My teacher read this book during TRA which stands for "Teacher Read Aloud."
Who Let the cat out of the bag?.......2005-10-29
The book consists of thirty pages, each written and illustrated by a student who was in the fourth grade at Newcastle Avenue Elementary School in Reseda, California. The first page along with the back cover profiles the students in three rows along with their teacher, Ms. Lizette Madruga and Ms. Carlyn Taggart. The very last page is a compilation of three photographs showing groups of the children in aprons adorning paintbrushes putting the touches on the book.
Each page has a collage of colors that are smeared, dotted and textured. I was disappointed not to find any mention of how the illustrations took place and the process. It would have been nice to know how the order of the phrases was chosen and how they went about picking the phrases. I feel that would have added to the charm of the book, Who Let The Cat Out Of The Bag? by sharing with the reader the steps taken to make the book.
It does appear that some or maybe all of the illustrations started with pencil drawings. The faces on many of the illustrations are descriptive with a range of emotions showcased. Each page has a square border in a color that coincides with the image. These shades include purple, green, pink, yellow, orange and blue. The phrase is displayed in a font style text above the border. Located below the border at the bottom of each page is the meaning of each sentence in the same black font, each is prefaced with the word meaning.
Many of the students signed their name within their illustration. My son and I spent time looking over each page to find the signature, but some were hard to locate. The styles of the children's illustrations vary from a full colored border to many that have open white space with limited details. There were quite a few amusing phrases too, like the phrase of words taken out of her mouth showed I love school.
There are a few that were hard to decipher, such as a boy with a mean look to his face sitting on a hot seat in front of a television set. To the right was a green darkened window with the meaning stating " You're in trouble". I had a hard time trying to explain that one to my son because the kid did not look like he was doing anything that would get him in trouble.
The funniest illustration to me is " food's on me". The girl is at a green table with a purplish cat holding out a paw. The girl is wearing a hat with pigtails and big pink shoes. Her face is showing sideways but should be looking the other way. This page shows a lot of imagination and focus on the phrase. Her hat has food items on top of it and showcases the color images nicely.
The images that seemed to capture the phrases and meaning accurately were those done by female students. My son likes the two brown potatoes sitting on the couch the best. Reading through Who Let The Cat Out Of The Bag? sparks an interesting dialogue for my son as he starts coming up with phrases he did not see listed in the book. We have started writing them down as we think of them and hope someday to publish our own compilation.
It is a shame that Who Let The Cat Out Of The Bag? is not easy to find for purchase because it is really a good start on helping kids with autism to learn through the visualization of the phrase with the actual meaning on the same page.

Customer Reviews:
Sometimes Trite, But Contains More Truth Than Many Want To Admit.......2006-04-17
I have been an airline pilot for fifteen years now, and my hat is off to the job the flight attendants do; I couldn't in a million years do their job. This book is a bit trite at times, but nevertheless does convey some of the issues that confront flight attendants on a routine basis.
The book is short, is in large font, and has large margins, so it is very quickly read. While I wonder about a few of the "99 ways," I know firsthand that the gist of the book is correct. One reviewer seemed to think that the author was whiny and was asking too much of passengers with this light-hearted skewering, but I don't agree: it seems to me that the author is just asking to be treated like you would want to be treated. Also contrary to that reviewer's understanding, most flight attendants do actually like people, they just like to have the passengers act in a civilized manner, obey their instructions (they are FAA mandated), and to think before doing totally outrageous things like changing their baby's diaper on a food cart in a galley.
Flight attendants come in all shapes and sizes, some are surly and otherwise difficult, but they are in the minority. Most do a very hard job with courtesy and dignity under frequently very difficult circumstances, and with fewer and fewer resources. This book is a little over-the-top at times, and is certainly lightweight reading, but it does show what these people are up against. For content the book probably deserves three and a half stars, but since flight attendants work so hard, I rounded up to four.
If this book offends you, perhaps some introspection is in order: maybe you know some or all of the "99 ways."
apparently none of us want to be there.......2005-11-09
Before I paid $13 for this I should have looked at the length. My mistake. There isn't a whole heck of a lot of content here compared to other recent flight attendant books out there, and that content can be boiled down to a few salient points of guidance for travelers:
1) Have no emotions except gratitude to your sainted flight attendants for choosing to serve you. Strive for your own form of sainthood, which amounts to never having needs or feelings except the foregoing.
2) You are not here to get from point A to point B. You are here to monitor your every action to improve the flight attendants' convenience. Now you know.
3) Flight attendants basically do not like you, so watch it, lest you receive the Dreaded Eye Roll and the Stony Ignore.
There. I saved you $13. Too bad the author doesn't give us any real reason to want to make her life easier, as she doesn't seem to like us much to begin with. Well, I didn't like her co-workers much either to begin with, based on experience, but I've always tried to keep an open mind. I still will, but no thanks to Deveny.
That's where the book fails those it purports to help: it fails to create any sense of community between flight attendant and passenger. Both are victims: the victims of airline deregulation, cramped planes, crappy food and miserable overall conditions. The two most aggrieved groups involved in the airline industry are natural allies. A balanced book that promoted improved relations between the two would be a real service. Instead, into the hands of already angry and frustrated passengers is dropped a treatise on how to spread that annoyance around to the nearest targets--with no incentive offered as to why they should not. So I'll pick up some slack here.
Fellow fliers, please try and treat your flight crew with courteous respect, for everyone's benefit, in spite of the fact that they rate you slightly above a used diaper. In so doing, you'll rise above the mean-spirited ranting that fills this book. Focus your anger where it is deserved: the airline industry executives and the immense bonuses they get, all because flight attendants and passengers are the ones jointly taking a hosing.
As for me, I want to fly even less now than I did before I read it. I wonder if it's occurred to the author that this sentiment isn't really going to promote greater job security in her field.
Amazing book.......2005-10-12
Like many others here, I'm a Flight Attendant. Quite frankly I have laughed my butt off. With sincere humor EVERYTHING here is SO TRUE. I love the way the author express the daily hassles we deal with. It would be a great book to have in the passengers seat back pocket so they can laugh and respect a little more the struggles we go through every day. Thanks for a wonderful, comical and refreshing way to express our frustrations.
GREAT READ.
Loved it!.......2005-06-21
I'm a former flight attendant, and got this book as a gift from a friend who still files. It's been 9 years since I had the job, but all the 99 ways still resonated with me and made me laugh. Such a hard job to do! I really appreciated her humor and practical ideas.
Much fun!.......2005-06-12
Whether you fly once a year or 60,000 miles a year as I do, you'll enjoy Kuzma Deveny's 99 Ways to Make a Flight Attendant Fly - Off the Handle. As a former flight attendant (back in the 'olden days) I believe this book is the 'bible' for anyone traveling by air. It clears up the mystery of flying in a cleaver, witty way from the perspective of an experienced flight attendant. And it's a humorous way of educating travelers.
Kuzma Deveny discusses (99 times) the ways that you can make your trip by air so much more pleasant. And if you follow her suggestions, not only will you arrive at your destination in a better mood, but you'll also be contributing to the well being of your flight attendants. And their mood directly impacts your mood.
The suggestions and vignettes in 99 Ways to Make a Flight Attendant Fly - Off the Handle were logical and realistic. The way they were presented kept me laughing from the beginning to the end of the book.
This is the perfect gift for the traveler in your life.
