Book Description

The year is 1357. The Inquisition rages throughout medieval France, searching ruthlessly for heretics. In an epic tale of passion, mystery, and unspeakable danger, one woman faces the flames...and triumphs.

Mother Marie Françoise, born Sybille, is a midwife with a precocious gift for magic -- a gift that makes her a prime target for persecution at the hands of the Church. She flees her village and takes refuge in a Franciscan sisterhood. Before long, Sybille's unusual powers bring her under the scrutiny of the Inquisition. Michel, a pious and compassionate monk sent to hear her confession, finds himself drawn more intimately into Sybille's life and destiny than either of them could have imagined.

Like a magician herself, Jeanne Kalogridis weaves a tale of star-crossed love, of faith and heresy, of mysticism and witchcraft, against a fascinating historical backdrop -- the Black Death, the Hundred Years' War, and the catastrophic defeat of France at the hands of the English. The result is a page-turning novel about one of the most intriguing periods in history.

3 out of 5 stars Kalogridis tries too hard.......2007-08-11

As a historical fiction fan, I thought this book was right up my alley. However, Kalogridis' writing leaves much to be desired. She must have written with a thesaurus by her side because she unnecessarily replaces adjectives with the largest words she can find. The over-use of words like "ere" and "naught," combined with the overabundacne of pronouns like "Evil" and "Race" bog down the narrative.

The magic instilled by the Goddess of the story seems inconsistent and the heroes are too full of doubt. The only character that felt strong was Sybille's grandmother. The most enjoyable part of the narrative was when Sybille was young and under her grandmother's care. As the book progressed, the events became too urgent and felt scattered. There are so many historical side notes that could have been left out: the war with England, the involvement of the pope, midwifery... It would have been a much better book if it was shorter and more straightforward.

4 out of 5 stars Terror in the Name of God.......2007-06-12

A graphic recreation of the 14th century Inquisition reign of terror aimed at the political/economic dominance of France by the church - a world ravaged by recurring bubonic plague epidemics and the Anglo/Norman effort to control France. An intense plot, unfortunately fostering the peculiar notion that a "race" of pagan godess worshippers with magical powers actually existed ("devil worshippers," as the christian church charged) and operated in league with the Jews (a calumny perpetuated by the church which is, in fact, utterly nonsensical, considering the exclusivity claimed bt the "chosen people." Equally incredulous is the author's notion that an unshakeable love existed between the male and female heirs to the powers of the godess`, although they had never met. Great historical recreation, rousing characters and plot, but a very silly thesis.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing read.......2006-06-02

Abbess Marie Franchise, or Sybille before entering the nunnery is many things to many people. To some she's a saint, to the Catholic church, she's a threat, and because of that, they have accused her of being a witch. To others she's a pagan goddess.

The story revolves around the Abbess's confession to a priest who during the confession realizes that he is inextricably linked to Sybille. To tell how would be to ruin the story.

There seems to be much discussion about what "type" of novel this is. In my opinion it's historical fiction with a healthy dose of either pagan or gothic thrown in. I would not call it fantasy. To me fantasy needs elves, dwarves, or some fantastical creatures like Tolkein's hobbits.

But enough background and analysis aside; it's a thoroughly entertaining book. Through the confession and flashbacks we're given Sybille's life from that as a child, her initiation into the pagan rituals that become her life, her becoming a nun, and her eventual trial and aftermath.

I would not recommend this book to someone who is a fundamentally religious person that might take offense at the idea that there just might be another alternative to Christianity. I would not recommend this book to someone who cannot suspend their belief in the "real" world. But if you like historical fiction and have an open and fanciful mind, you'll probably enjoy this book.

My star ratings:

One star - couldn't finish the book

Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out other books by the author

Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.

Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for others by the same author.

Five stars - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars Intense (in a good way)..........2006-05-02

At times and take "a breather" because you will find yourself blown away by the intensity of the story. Kalogridis, with this single book, makes a name for herself in the historical fiction genre. Focus on something that fascinates all of us--witches and witchtrials in history--the background is flawlessly researched. The ending is one of thos amazing bits of writing that makes you go, "how did the author think of THAT?" A joy to read, thanks to masterful use of language and images and a crisply-moving plot. You'll care about the characters, too. This is one you will read and re-read.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely Odd.......2006-02-26

This novel was exceptionally odd. It was my first encounter with this author and I was hopeful about the prospect of this book. Instead of what I expected, a more traditional novel about the persecution of "witches" in the Middle Ages, this book took a turn towards the weird. Marie Francoise, an abbess accused of witchcraft relates her life story to Father Michel, a very young Catholic priest. Through the telling of her tale, Michel comes to see that he is entwined with Marie, and that he is actually a supernatural figure, not a mere priest.

It was absolutely interesting to read, but was extremely odd.

3 out of 5 stars Generally Solid Books.......2005-06-07

I have enjoyed Leslie Glass' writing a great deal but have found that I need a break from reading her books too close together. I love reading a series in order as I like to see the character progession and development. I also like the feeling that I am getting to know the characters. In that vein though, I can get frustrated at the communication that the characters show. In most of the books I want to shout at April to just tell her mother how she feels! I know communication exists like that but I find it frustrating.

Overall the stories are engrossing and very interesting with a great focus on New York. I love books that show me a great deal about the area they are in. I would suggest these books to anyone who likes detective mysteries that are not graphic. Very solid series, just can't read them in a row.

3 out of 5 stars The good novel that could have been great.......2003-12-05

Glass does a great job in getting the reader into the story, creating an interesting plot and intricate characters. Nevertheless, towards the end the action is too rushed and events unfold without a clear connection. It seems to me as if the author had to comply with a deadline and could not finish the book in the way it deserved. This series will get another chance from me, and hopefully the experience will be better next time!

4 out of 5 stars Gory but good.......2002-05-13

I was made aware of Leslie Glass' novel by a Japanese friend of mine, who had read her translated books and thought that the Asianness of the book was great. We're both big mystery fans, so I quickly went out and bought whatever Glass novels I could find. Being half Asian, it is great to not only see a leading Asian character, but also see someone capture the Asian culture and essence so well. April's mother is somewhat like my mother (and definitely like many of my friend's Chinese mothers!), she always makes me laugh - especially her dialog, which is just so true to form. I would be very interested to find out how Glass learned so much about Chinese culture??

Compared to her other books (I'm afraid I haven't read then in chronological order), this one came across as a bit more gruesome and gory. However, I enjoyed it nevertheless. It's a good murder mystery, with solid characters, what else can one ask for?

4 out of 5 stars Great "Time".......2001-05-16

This was my first exposure to Leslie Glass - great first impressions! I really enjoyed the book, the characters were well defined and the plot was exciting and twisted. April Woo is a great character - strong, independent and smart! Other reviewers have correctly compared this author to Thomas Harris (Hannibal series) - April is similar to Clarice, the serial killer plot is well thought out and moves at a great pace.

I have already purchased Hanging Time and can't wait to get started!

From the Publisher Of the Black Death, they said it was the end of the world; I knew better. The world can withstand the sickness of the body, but it remains to be seen whether it will survive the sickness that eats at the souls of our persecutors... So professes Mother Marie Françoise, born Sybille, a poor midwife who is taught pagan ways and magic by her grandmother and is forced to take refuge among the Franciscan sisterhood as the Inquisition threatens. Her extraordinary life story unfolds when a monk is charged with determining whether the mysterious abbess is a saint or a witch. Sybille is possessed of exceptional powers, and she is in full command of them -- practicing white and black magic, winning the hearts of people with her wisdom, and terrorizing church authorities with her cunning. But even witches are not immune to earthly love, and Sybille embarks on a passionate, dangerous quest to be reunited with her beloved. As she confronts an exceptional destiny -- one that will require her to face the flames in order to save others like her -- she relates a tale of impossible triumph that forever changes the inquisitor who hears it.

I am giving this book 1 star not because of the story content but because of the duplicity to the consumer!!! This is advertised as a new book by Gerritsen. Its NOT! These books were written in the late 80's. The publisher reprinted them, put 2 together and marketed it as a new book. That's DECEITFUL!!

Im sick and tired of publishers/authors who throw a new cover on an old book and trick the public into buying what they think is a new book. Thats why I refuse to pay for books. I request them at the library..for free!~

The Time Patrol is yet another collection of Anderson's stories set in the universe. He obviously liked fiddling with them.

Basically, they centre around Unattached Agent of the Patrol Everard Manse, and his adventures and his relationships working for the highly advanced Danellians to preserve the nature of the timestream.

This is the first Poul Anderson book I've ever read. I am impressed. There are ten short stories in this, the entire "Time Patrol" collection. Each story, although focused around the main character of all the stories, is unique. Mr. Anderson is certainly a gifted writer. He combines history, science and fiction. deftly weaving great yarns that make you think. And that's the kind of book I like to read. A book that makes you think.
      Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Better For History Buffs.......2006-06-23

Poul Anderson was a history buff and, except for the first, each of these stories seems to represent his need to come to grips with his research into a particular era. Stipulated that Anderson was a master storyteller, almost incapable of telling a dull tale -- yet some of these do approach dullness, if you don't happen to share his fascination with the details of that era. Yes, sometimes he makes the history come alive in vivid descriptive passages: this is "showing" not "telling," and indeed "showing" of a high order.

But in some stories, he "tells" instead, using long expository passages in which characters bring each other up to date on the historical background of the era in question. Anderson's expository dialog, unlike his action or plotting, is dull and sometimes awkward, and I several times lost interest and skimmed.

And in other stories, contrarily, he doesn't do enough exposition: "Gibraltar Falls" vividly describes the era when the Atlantic spilled into the then-dry Mediterranean valley, but gives the curious reader no background to follow up the geological speculation on which it is grounded. Similarly, "The Only Game in Town" describes a Mongol expedition into North America, a speculation that I believe has some basis, but although Anderson tells us a lot about the Mongols, there is not enough of a handle to follow it up into current research.

Net: fun for history buffs; action/adventure fans might do better reading other series by Anderson.

5 out of 5 stars classic, timeless, and glorious..........2006-05-16

Together with DeCamp's LEST DARKNESS FALL or Silverbergs's UP THE LINE (and perhaps a few others), no other stories really capture the flavor of history, the paradox of time travel, or the genuine joy at being able to wander into the past as this book of stories.

Although the first few have the exact flavor of their era--1950's Astounding magazine--there is nothing really dated or obsolete about these eight stories. Each and every one is a delight, from the long agony of "Odin the Goth", who already knows the doom of those he loves, to the joy of catching time bandits in a beautifully realized ancient Tyre, Poul Anderson gives us stories of the sort that hooked me on science fiction all those years ago... and exactly what brings me back today.

The full set of time patrol stories at nearly 800 pages, this is the biggest bargain you'll find this year.

5 out of 5 stars A time traveler faces an ethical dilemma.......2006-04-20

You can't go wrong with Poul Anderson, whose name is nearly synonymous with the genre, and TIME PATROL is an excellent hard science adventure which tells of a time traveler's ethical dilemma. His Patrol seeks to preserve the history they know and protect the future from terrorists who would remold it to their own purposes - even if the past should really be changed.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A204113. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis is a critical analysis of US foreign policy toward Iran and Iraq known as a policy of dual containment. The objective of dual containment is to isolate these regimes politically, economically and militarily. This thesis evaluates American conduct in the region for the last 50 years, in order to show how previous strategies culminated in the present policy. It discusses both the merits and problems inherent in dual containment, as well as the impact of this policy on its two intended recipients. In closing, the thesis offers possible policy options, including an analysis of their specific advantages and disadvantages. The findings of this research conclude that dual containment is a sustainable policy in the near term and ensures that US vital national interests in the region are not challenged. In the long term, however, it is argued that America needs to initiate a policy of incremental engagement toward both Iran and Iraq. This strategy should begin with economic ties leading eventually to diplomatic relations. Nevertheless, both regimes need to demonstrate the desire and ability to accept the standards of behavior as established by the community of nations.

Manse is getting a bit worn down by the whole time policing thing, particularly given there is a faction with similar technology opposing them to their own ends.

"The Shield of Time" is another novel in Poul Anderson's superb "Time Patrol" series. The premise is intriguing: Time travel is discovered in the far future, and history is changeable. Evolved humans from far uptime establish the Time Patrol to prevent time travellers from changing history and preventing the future humans from being created.

"The Shield of Time" is three novellas that are loosely linked, and the main protagonist is again Manse Everard, an Unattached agent of the Patrol ("Unattached" means that Everard can be assigned to projects in any era, rather than being a specialist in one particular time.)

These stories are all thought-provoking, and as usual take advantage of author Anderson's broad understanding of human history. I found the middle story to be somewhat tedious, and to be honest about it, Wanda Tamberly did not strike me as Time Patrol material, unless the Patrol selects its agents for looks instead of brains. This quibble aside, this is a fine collection of novellas that fans of the Time Patrol series will greatly enjoy.

Poul Anderson was a giant of the Golden Age of Science Fiction. As I have noted elsewhere, Anderson died in 2001 and already his body of work is becoming difficult to find. I hope and trust that future republishings will make his work available to future readers.

          2 out of 5 stars A disappointing read.......2006-02-16

I originally read the 1950s 'Time Patrol' stories written by Poul Anderson about 30 years ago, and loved them.
So when I discovered a the sequel 'The Shield of Time', I was delighted and couldn't wait to read it.
I'm sorry to say I must agree with other reviewers in that I found it quite tedious. The pace and action of the 1950s stories was replaced mainly with boring historical trivia.
The book is in three main sections.
The first section dragged along to an obvious and unexciting conclusion.
The middle section based in pre-historic earth was simply irrelevent, and the third and final section was a re-hash of a previously told 1950s story in which the present world has been changed out of all recognition by a change to history that took place centuries before.
At least in the 1950s version of this story the change was entertaining and made sense, in this version it 'just happened', and having happened the story plodded along with no action until the very last pages.
I can only assume that the author was paid by the word for this book, since there were so many of them. Sad to say, I personally was most disappointed.

          4 out of 5 stars Jacket summary.......2006-01-08

from the back cover of the July 1991 TOR paperback edition

Manse Everard is a man with a mission. As an Unattached Agent of the Time Patrol, he's to go anyplace - and anytime? - where humanity's transcendent future is threatened by the alteration of the past. This is Manse's profession, and his burden; for how much suffering, throughout human history, can he bear to "preserve"?

Wanda Tamberley is a Patrol member in search of her mission. Recruited fro sunny California in the late 20th century, she'd rather serve as a scientist in the research branch, exploring Earth's flora and fauna in epochs long past. But as hints accumulate from the Patrol's mysterious leaders uptime, it's beginning to look as if a lot of human history depends on her personal decisions - and Manse's.

Meanwhile, the Exaltationists are on the loose, determined to revise human history and rule Time forever ... and Manse Everard is sworn to stop them, no matter what the heartbreaking cost!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and thought-provoking.......2003-04-05

Though it's billed as Anderson's first novel-length story about the Time Patrol, it's really three novellas strung together. First, agent Manse Everard is in Bactria (today's Afghanistan) in 209 BCE, fight a group called the Exaltationists who are constantly seeking to overthrow the established timeline and establish an alternate history in which they are worshipped as gods, or failing that, to let chaos loose on the universe. Next there's a long sojourn in the Pleistocene, when new Time Patrol recruit Wanda Tamberley is letting her emotions get the better of her judgment in dealing with competing tribes. Finally there's a brisk romp through medieval Europe, restoring the timeline after it has been disrupted by a random event. This was my favorite part of the book. The second part lacked excitement and tended to drag. The first part was good but I really wanted to know more. Where did the Exaltationists come from? How did they come so close to disrupting time in Columbia and Peru? How did a conquistador seize a timecycle, figure out how to use it, and go forward to 1989 California and kidnap Wanda Tamberley? I would really have liked to read these stories but all this action is over before the book even starts. Maybe it is described in some of Anderson's previous Time Patrol stories.

Anyway, the book is enjoyable on the whole if you can get over the sometimes tedious middle part.

All of the FISHERMAN study books are great for group studies, and this one, MARRIAGE: LEARNING FROM COUPLES IN SCRIPTURE is no exception. I personally wish these books went into more detail on Biblical Doctrine on the subjects they cover, but I believe the purposful omission of such detail is to encourage a maximum amount of group input. This is a process the author's refer to as "inductive" study, which promotes study member research.

These are all well written and each section includes provocative questions on the subject matter that will stimulate group participation.
