Book Description
With the bravura storytelling and pungent authenticity of detail she brought to her acclaimed Lymond Chronicles, Dorothy Dunnett presents The House of Niccolò series. The time is the 15th century, when intrepid merchants became the new knighthood of Europe. Among them, none is bolder or more cunning than Nicholas vander Poele of Bruges, the good-natured dyer's apprentice who schemes and swashbuckles his way to the helm of a mercantile empire.
In 1462, Nicholas is a wealthy 21-year-old. His beloved wife has died. His stepchildren have locked him out of the family business. He and his private army are the target of multiple conspiracies. And both contenders for the throne of Cyprus, the brilliant Queen Carlotta and her charismatic, sexually ambivalent brother James, are demanding his support. Walking a tightrope of intrigue, Dunnett's hero juggles adversaries and allies, from the delectable courtesan Primaflora to the Mameluke commander Tzani-Bey al Ablak, a man of undiluted evil. Masterfully paced, alive with sensual delights, Race of Scorpions confirms Dorothy Dunnett as the grande dame of the genre.

Race of Scorpions,Historical Fiction.......2006-12-28
I cannot say enough about Dorothy Dunnett's Series, THEY LYMOND CHRONICLES AND this one from the series THE HOUSE OF NOCCLO. All the books are great reads and I truly loved this one. I am on THE UNICORN HUNT, now and am enjoying it just as much. I will keep reading until I have finished all her books and then find some other good authors. These are filled with terrific characters that just grab you as well as lots of information from history that I am drinking in.
Dunnett takes on Cyprus.......2006-06-29
Ah, the frustrating pleasure of reading a Dorothy Dunnett novel :-) Her writing is dense, her plots are complex, and her characters (especially the male ones, which IMO are infinitely easier to like than the female ones) are nothing short of psychological studies. Often, while reading this book, I felt like I was way in over my head. And yet, I kept going, and the reward of Dunnett's writing, and her story, are well worth the effort, in my view.
In this third part of the eight-part Niccolo series, Nicholas is kidnapped and taken to Cyprus to fight with King James for control of the island, against his legitimate half-sister Carlotta. We meet the engaging courtesan Primaflora, who becomes Nicholas's mistress. We also see some old friends, such as Tobias the physician and Captain Astorre and the faithful Loppe. We meet Nicholas's cousin Diniz, and are reacquainted with the vengeful Katelina van Borselen.
But the vortex, as always, is the dynamic, ingenius, amazing Nicholas vander Poele. In this chapter of the story, we see how Nicholas deals with the stress of so many demands. We see how he deals with the love of two women whom he does not love in return, and the guilt associated with that. We follow him as he tries to play two sides (and sometimes more) of a dangerous game, all so that he can come out the winner. Nicholas is difficult to understand, but fascinating to read about. And in Race of Scorpions, Dunnett ensures that readers will not fail to follow him into his next adventure.
an exquisite tale of power.......2006-03-31
niccolo continues to learn how to use his power, and how to mittigate its impact, as he searches for meaning and love and fun
my review.......2001-06-21
On this, the third chapter in the Niccolo series, we fin Nicholas has been "kidnapped" by the 'presumptuous' King of Cyprus who is actually trying to recover his kingdom from his sister.
Nicholas is able to help the king and at the same time obtain franchises in his dye works and sugar fields. He meets with Katelina, the mother of his only child, only to lose her once more after they reconcile. Finally, once the island is secure to King Zacco, Nicholas is allowed to return to Venice, where he faces once more his rival family, the de St Pol and Riberac.
In this chapter of the story the author makes great use of description in her scenes and they are so vivid! the characters, the settings everything is so masterfully blended with reality and fiction.
I loved this book and I have already started the fourth chapter. Good!
At Her Usual Stunning Best.......2001-02-26
Dorothy Dunnett never disappoints her faithful readers. This, third in the Niccolo series is a wonderful book that depicts the unsettledness of the Island of Cyprus. We learn that this tempestuous island has always been an important one because of its strategic location. I enjoyed this book, because we actually got to see some of the mask come off Nicolo in his encounter with his Katelina. In true Dunnett fashion, this encounter did not take place in a private and safe bedchamber, but in a place where nature abounded, as well as danger. The history that we find out in this book is also equally interesting and true to what actually happened. This is certainly another great series.

SHARING SPACES by Nadia Nichols
January 21, 2006
Amazon rating 4/5
"Nadia Nichols' love of the great outdoors is evident In Sharing Spaces, the story of two people brought together through the death of a man, Admiral McCallum. Senna McCallum inherits half of her estranged grandfather's property in a remote area in Labrador. It's a fishing retreat that the Admiral and his partner hoped to open to the public in the near future.
Said partner, Jack Hanson, is not the elderly figure Senna imagined, but a good-looking virile man who soon has her heart racing. Jack loves the land and the idea of the fishing retreat just as much as her grandfather did, but Senna has a life to live on the coast of Maine, working for her aunt. Although Senna's real passion is the outdoors and endangered wildlife, she now works as a wedding planner. Not exactly the life she envisioned for herself, but it pays the rent. Jack does his best to convince Senna that her life belongs in Labrador at their fishing retreat, but Senna is committed only to her two week deadline, and insists on returning home to her other life, including a man she no longer loves. But the longer she stays, the more she realizes that Labrador has a lot to offer her, including her grandfather's business partner." - Complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton
As always, Nadia Nichols does a fantastic job with a novel that is beautifully descriptive on top of being a realistic romance. I've come to find that Nichols' Superromances have become favorites of mine. Recommended.
terrific contemporary romance .......2006-01-14
While working on a wedding at the Inn on Christmas Cove, her mom calls Senna McCallum to tell her that her grandfather the Admiral just died in North West River, Labrador; that the funeral is being held today; and he will be cremated. Finally he named her as his executor. Senna wished she had been closer to the Admiral, whom she had not seen in five years, but is shocked that he named her to handle his estate instead of one of his male offspring.
The trip to Goose Bay takes forever, but Senna, after meeting the Admiral's lawyer, travels to the fishing lodge to meet the partner and best friend John Hanson expecting a crusty old sea wolf. Instead John is a handsome hunk currently drunk around her age. As they squabble over who the Admiral really was, they fall in love, but she is a wedding planner while he is a fishing host in a place where no one would celebrate nuptials, but love makes strange partners.
SHARING SPACES is a terrific contemporary romance due to the rich vivid detail of Labrador provided by Nadia Nichols that gives the audience a strong picture of an area not often used as a backdrop. The lead duet are a fine pairing as the Admiral apparently believed when he selected Senna (though hard to tell how he knew since he pretty much isolated himself from his family). The story line is character driven as John and Senna argue over the Admiral's virtues and what to do with the fishing lodge (to sell or not to sell that is the question). This tale has a strong eccentric cast starring in a fine modern day tale yet Labrador steals the show.

Does Your Home Need a Psychiatrist?.......2006-04-07
At first you think it will be just one more book of organizing tips. It's much more than that. The author focuses on techniques not just for clearing out clutter, but on resolving personal differences in a couple's relationship that lead to the disorganization in the home. The target audience is newly merged households, but it works for anyone moving to a new house, or for long-term relationships that still have problem areas in their home.
Although some of her examples end up suggesting seeing a marriage counselor, there is much the average couple can apply to their home situation and organizational problems.
I like the final chapter where she talks about creating a "sacred space" or a personal retreat in your home. This goes on to involve feng shui principles which I was already reading about in other books (101 Feng Shui Tips for your Home by Webster, 10-Minute Clutter Control by Alexander.)
The book goes room-by-room through the house pointing out ways to improve and make it more liveable. Throughout the book are written exercises to help you sort out your issues that interfere with a comfortable home.

Regina Leeds is extremely talented in motivating one to get rid of clutter and make a home livable. She has helped me immensely, and hope you feel the same when you read it as well.
Remember, don't just let it collect dust, let it make a different you and your home will then reflect.
Good Luck,

Book Description
What allows certain individuals and groups to maintain control over the actions and lives of others? Linguistic anthropologist Elizabeth Keating went to the island of Pohnpei, in Micronesia, and studied how people use language and other semiotic codes to reproduce and manipulate status differences. The result is this inside view of how language works to create power and social inequality. This book challenges widely held theories on the nature of social stratification, including women's roles in creating hierarchy.

Customer Reviews:
Dor and Irene are growing up.......2007-05-29
Dor is growing up and King Trent is providing him with occasional opportunities to practice his Kingship skills as we all know from previous books that Dor is the designated heir for King Trent. So, at the beginning of the book, King Trent informs Dor that he will be going on a secret trade mission to Mundania and Dor needs to take over the Kingship while Trent is away. To camouflage everything, Trent tells everyone that he and Iris are taking a long needed vacation. The whole absence is supposed to be for only a week.
Dor takes over and finds out that being a King is not as easy as it seems. As a matter of fact, there are implications and complications for every seemingly minor decision that is brought to Dor's attention. So, Dor does the best he can and seems to do a fair job of it especially since his magical talent is very helpful! The week passes by and Dor is ready the give up his throne ... but Trent does not return!!!
Another two weeks pass by and Dor is beside himself with worry. Not only that, but Trent's daughter Irene is also sick with worry and since she is Dor's constant companion, it is hard for him to ignore the issue. Another factor that complicates life is that Dor is now 16 and Irene is 15 and she is developing into quite a beautiful girl while Dor is also developing into a man and is starting to notice that Irene has developed in some very interesting shapes and intriguing ways!
Finally, Dor and Irene cannot stand it any more and they resolve to search out where Trent is and rescue him if necessary. But, another complication arises, it seems that a new Magician has been detected in the very south of Xanth and that needs to be investigated immediately. This is especially important since the furthest southern point of Xanth is inhabited by Centaurs - it is called Centaur Isle - who believe that magic is obscene. With the potential complications of all of this, Dor and Irene collect their friends (Chester the Centaur, Grundy the Golem, and Smash the Ogre) and go off to check out what is going on in the south.
As is usual with Xanth stories, there are many marvelous and dangerous creatures that are encountered and many situations where the play on words leads to some wonderful imagery (for instance, light bulbs are planted in the fields and the brightest bulbs are the most desirable). In this case, Centaur Isle leads to the magic-infused Centaur whose magical talent is the creation of an aisle of magic in front and behind him. In other words, a Centaur Aisle! Dor is also a very creative speller and many people use this attribute when giving him hints. For instance, Trent tells Dor to always rely on his Honesty when needing to make a decision on where to do. This does not make sense to anyone until Dor writes it down as ONESTI which then is revealed as a kingdom in Mundania!
Adventure after adventure result and the happy crew goes from discovering the magical Centaur to finding where Trent and Iris are being held captive. It takes quite a bit of ingenuity and inventiveness on the part of Dor, Irene and Grundy to find Trent and Iris and release them and then set the world aright.
This is a standard Xanth book in its creativity, its word play, and its humor. The storyline itself is dead-serious of course, and the resolution leads to many other possible followups. It is a very enjoyable and quick read - a perfect story for the beach or if you are a commuter!
Centaur Isle.......2005-10-28
Genre: Fantasy
Three sentence summary: A man, a young woman, a golem, an orge, and a centaur go out into the "wilderness" to find their lost king. The man's name is Dor, he goes looking for the king because the land of Xanth, a magical place, needs him. He is a substitute for hte king which is to overwhelming fro him.
What I most liked about the book: It kept you reading. The book's problems, when shown to you, are very unexspected.
What I didn't like and why: I didn't like it when the party went into the "real" world. I would much rather a total fantasy book.
My favorite character and why: Irene is my favorite character because she's beautiful and stubburn. She dosen't let anyone boss her around.
The scene, line, or passage that meant something to me and why(page #): "...He resented their dastardly deed that had ripped him from his contented existence and made him an exile." Pg.175 This quote describes a centaur that has just found out terrible news but he makes the most of it, that's why I like this quote.
What I would say about this book to someone else: It's daring and a romance story. It's exciting and about truth.
One question I have after reading this book: Did Dor and Irene get married?
My strongest reason for recommending this book: It is a good book, it dosen't give away the answer until the end. And, it is a fantasy.
Centaur Aisle is a great book........2005-05-05
I highly recommend this book! I have read most of the Xanth Series by Mr. Anthony and would recommend it as a necesary step in the evolution of Xanth and the understanding of the land and its people. These are the key characters who set the stage for all of the future books. The twists in the plot and the fun of what Magic (albeit funny Magic) might be like in Mundania are hilariously, exotically absorbing and if you look at this fraom a point of view of how the stories relate back to this book you will realize how great it truly is! I know it is a little more serious and less light hearted than the first three Xanth Novels but it is exciting and fun nonetheless. I actually consider this one my pesonal favorite of the twenty some-odd titles in the series that I have read. I consider Xanth Novels as "Must Read TV" because they are so delightfully entertaining, one is able to be drawn in and can almost watch the series of events unfold. Punny or not these books are great fun and I hope everyone else has as great a time as I have had reading them. Enjoy the escape of your imagination!!
Centaur Aisle is moderately appealing book in Xanth series.......2004-12-08
In this fourth book in the Xanth series by Piers Anthony, you will follow the adventures of the temporary king Dor, Princess Irene, orge Smash, the golem Grundy, and a centaur named Arnolde the Archivist. The present king, Trent, and Queen Iris have left on a secret mission and left Dor in charge of Xanth until their return. The only problem is that they DON'T return! Can Dor figure out the clues that Trent gave him to determine their location in Mundania? How will they save the royal pair -- Mundania is a place where magic does not exist! Enter a new magician in the realm of Xanth, and the impossible becomes a magical reality.
One of my favorite parts of the book would be the climatic ending battle between our heroes and the antagonists. It is not my favorite of the Xanth books, but it is notable to see how Dor changes throughout the book. The author provides a slightly different side to Queen Iris' personality at the end of the book that I appreciated when I read it again as well.
A high flying adventure!.......2004-07-17
Prince Dor has been left in charge while King Trent and Queen Iris go on a trade mission to the mysterious land of mundania.
However, something goes wrong. Trent and Iris do not return when they are suppose to and Dor is left with an upset daughter (Prinsess Irene) and the Xanth elders who all know Dor is not ready to be king.
Going against the Elders wishes Dor and Irene set off in search of Trent with an unusual magition, a half ogre, a living doll, and a pouch of magical spells, including one cursed jar of salve that makes for an interesting twist.
This adventure takes place in Xanth, Mundania present, Mundania past, and the boarder lines between Xanth and Mundania, high in the air to far beneath the ground.
Xanth lovers will relish the new and interesting puns, while newer readers will find the adventure fun and amazing at times. A must read for any interested in Xanth.

Three for the Price of One.......2000-06-22
This is a great book to get, because it is actually three Xanth books in one. The first one, Centaur Aisle, is the fourth book in the series, and continues the mix of humorous puns, romance, and fantasy adventure as Dor is left in charge of Xanth as King Trent takes a "vacation" to Mundania (Earth). However, when the King goes missing, Dor must set out to find him, so he treks to the Southern most reaches of Xanth, the entrance to Mundania is of course to the North.
Book 5 Ogre, Ogre is a endearing tale of an Ogre who goes out on a quest, but forgets what it was he was questing for near the start of his trek. Nothing to fear though, everything works out in the end.
Book 6, Nightmare is a story about one "horses" dream to see the rainbow. Before she can though, she must save Xanth from the latest wave of Mundanians, Solve the problem of the disapearing Kings, and deal with the dastardly Horse man. All will be revealed by the end of the novel.
