Book Description
The rarefied and exclusive world of a famed international art auction house is laid bare in the first novel ever to be written by an inside observer. A behind-the-scenes look at the scandals, greed, corruption, seductions, and inner workings of this elegant world and its inhabitants. Love blooms among the antiques, and unforgettable characters abound.
Customer Reviews:
Exciting, fabulous.......2006-03-15
As an interior designer, I watch the auction houses, and attend sales regularly. I have NEVER before had an explanation of what actually goes on that presents art, decorative art, and antiques buying to us in the fashion that the major auction houses manipulate it..
Now I know, and every interior designer should.
Must reading for every designer who scavenges, bids at the auction houses, and is sometimes dismayed and horrified by the price escalation. Bravo to the author for a lucid and intelligent explanation of what actually goes on.
Decorum returns, with the tradition of the "masque.".......2006-02-21
John Milton defined the literary concept of decorum, using the proper language for the proper form. His word choice was completely different in "Paradise Lost" than it was in his rustic poem "Lycidas."
"To The Highest Bidder" is novel of artifice: artificial people, and an artificial world, and is peopled by characters who are both "round" and "flat", as explained by E.M. Forster in his series of lectures at Cambridge University.
Shakespeare himself could've written a little more clearly, couldn't he? Used fewer words? I suggest that CB, who reviewed the book on this page, misunderstands what the author was seeking to do. Because something is not his cup of tea does not make it without value. Language can bend whatever way it has to to serve its purpose. Does it occur to him that the people represented in the book actaully may talk and think as they are represented? Has he listened to them?
Perhaps the genteman needs to think about the literary use of hyperbole, then just head for the latest John Grisham or Robert B. Parker. This book has a fan club (I am one) of people who have been unable to put it down.
What did the Cadwalader chair ever do to deserve this?.......2006-02-11
I am a voracious reader and will devour anything in Spanish, French and English: from Virgil to Kazuo Ishiguro to Voltaire and Vargas Llosa, I also read quite a few mysteries, so not all my reading is so "high-falutin" and I am very familiar with the genre. This book was given to me by a friend with a connection to the chair in question and so I dove into it. It was one of the most painfully difficult books I have ever read, partly because of the overabundance of superlatives fighting to surpass each other, the amount of petty details that do nothing to enrich the characters or advance the plot but bore the reader- do I really need to know that Freddie "deftly flagged a cab to a stop and opened the door"? and most of all, the painfully convoluted and absurd plot itself. Half way through the book I had stopped caring about the characters and just hoped for the end (I detest leaving books unfinished).
Ms. Phillips does know the auction house world - that is obvious. But her characters are based on clichés more appropriately found in romance novels than in serious mysteries. For heaven's sake, there is even a Palazzo involved!!!
On another crucial point, the fact that this book is labeled a Pulitzer Prize Nominee means very little: someone had four copies of the book, a photo of the author, a pen to fill in the nomination form and 50 dollars for a handling fee. A loving mother or a hopeful editor even a nice neighbor could have done it. Thousands of books are entered each year from which only 3 are actually nominated by the jurors in the fiction category and among those the winner is chosen. Ms. Phillips' book is not among those finalists, so it is somewhat misleading to call this book a Pulitzer Prize Nominee because the institution has not nominated it but rather an anonymous someone has nominated it to the Pulitzer Board. If indeed it had been nominated there would be a record of it in the Pullitzer website. Can I include in my CV that I have been Nominated to win a Kellogg Grant just because I applied for one? I don't think so.
The very first thing I learned about writing - and hardly ever heed as evidenced here - is the importance of economy of language. Every word has to have a purpose, a "raison d'être". If it does nothing to either advance the plot or develop a character or enrich a thought, it has no place in the text. Give readers credit and trust that they will figure out that if Freddie flagged a cab it probably stopped and it follows that he then opened the door to get in. We don't need to have it spelled.
Witty, informative, and elegant.......2005-10-05
No wonder this book was up for a 2004 Pulitzer Prize. First-time author Phillips has woven an intriguing tale with deft touches and unusual characters. I defy you to put it down, or think of sleep. Each chapter teases you into the next. There is real and solid information here about the machinations of the auction world. The author is obviously an expert observer, and watched the scandals that erupted in the l990's in their beginning stages. You will know who, and what, each character in an auction house does, and how their lives flow together and apart. Those who are in the art and auction world in New York love this book. Bravo. Very nearly a work of art, certainly a work of knowledge.
Excellent, relevant book.......2005-04-29
The first book I have found that is written by an insider about the upper tier auction world. I have had first-hand experience with auction house shenanigans and found this book a real eye-opener. A page turning turning story - Must read for anyone who has dealt with auction houses.

A Good Read.......2006-07-29
A well written story with good character development. Jane Porter allows the readers to get to know the characters, and both are likable and their actions/reactions believable. There really wasn't too much romance in it. I thought it was weird it is being sold under the guise of a Harlequin pocketbook ... it almost felt like the love story was secondary to what was actually happening in the book. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it.
:0).......2006-06-20
FIRST OFF wasn't Gabby the cutiess thing, LOVE the story, EXCELLENT story telling. I JUST STARTED TO READ JANE PORTER and she has talent alot of it i like her novels...
Both the characters have a great chemistry and what it come down to is that they both love that little girl....
Powerful story. It made my heart twist........2006-04-21
As always, Jane Porter takes her readers to the most beautiful places, this time it was Montecarlo.
Samantha is a beautiful woman that has lived through many difficult situations. The most dramatic of all loosing unexpectedly the people she had loved the most. For the sake of a child, she got married by convenience to Johann and he turned out to be the most terrible gambler who even dared to wager his wife and daughter!
Unbeknownst to us, Christiano shares a special relationship with Gaby, but he is showing a lot of interest towards Samantha.
Wait and see the change of direction in this story and please be ready to read the most heart-wrenching drama typical of Mrs. Porter.
I strongly recommend it.
Ingriguing and Powerful Love Story Set in Monte Carlo.......2006-02-26
From the very beginning the reader is intrigued by the handsome Christiano who has definitely set his sights on Samantha. As this story continues you can't help but be drawn to Sam and her lovely step-daughter Gabby. One feels sorry for both as they have been taken advantage of by Johann whom all believe to be Gabby's father.
Johann, the evil man that he is, wagers both Sam and Gabby in a card game in Monte Carlo and of course, looses. From there on, the storyline takes twists and turns and keeps the reader on the edge of her seat.
This is just another example of how Jane Porter takes her readers to beautiful countries and entertains her readers with a very powerful story.
Book Summary:
Sold in Monte Carlo: a beautiful English baroness!
Samantha van Bergen has been wagered and won by the highest bidder: dark and sexy Italian, Cristiano Bartolo.
Did he buy her to bed her?
Innocent Sam is scared Cristiano will seduce her! But she quickly finds out he has his own reason for wanting her - bedding her is just a bonus!
Poignant yet sensual - Enthralling!.......2005-12-25
"TAKEN BY THE HIGHEST BIDDER is poignant yet sensual romance that stimulates the heart and enthralls the senses. Jane Porter has an unerringly beautiful talent for developing unique plots with deep drama that delve into the hearts of readers and leave a mark. Superbly written with detailed characterization and gripping emotional intensity, this romance is yet another reason why Jane Porter is one of the brightest stars on the Harlequin Presents horizon. Bravo, Ms. Porter!"

A heartwarming, charming story.......2005-11-07
When Paige Ashton finds herself on the auction block at the charity bachelorette auction that she herself had organized, she never imagined that she would end up being "bought" by Walker Camberlane, one of the most handsome men on the face of the earth. Their date propels the two to embark on a business relationship that promises to benefit both of them, only to have it compromised by a single act of passion. While they both want a deeper, more intimate relationship, there are obstacles in their way.
Roxanne St. Claire has written a touching, tender, heartwarming book with characters that fully compliment each other. I have yet to read a book by Ms. St. Claire that I haven't loved, and I give The Highest Bidder a high recommendation.
The Highest Bid is the Right Bid for Love - Another Great St.Claire Book!!!.......2005-11-07
The Highest Bidder is a wonderful addition to the Dynasties series The Ashton's. I chose this book because of the author, quite honestly. However, after reading this book I realized that the entire series must be very good based on the family itself, full of mystery intrigue, disfunction and dynamics.
The main characters Matt and Paige are a warm, witty and sensual couple. When Paige finds herself in a uncomfortable situation on stage because a bachelorette had gone missing, her cousin's friend Matt feels sorry for her. So Matt bids a ton of $$'s and wins the chance for a date with Paige.
As their story enfolds, one is treated to learning about this couple. Matt, a self made millionaire, not born into wealth, holds his emotions in, funny, sexy, intelligent, talented. Paige, the baby in the Ashton family, shy, smart, sweet, sensitive and the Winery event planner.
Their journey together is bitter sweet and I honestly couldn't but the book down. I think I'm going to invest in the rest of the series based on this book. If you enjoy The Highest Bidder then you'll enjoy Roxanne's McGrath Brother Series by Silhoueette Desire....The Fire Still Burns, Like a Hurricane and When the Earth Moves.
From the Back Cover:
Socialite Paige Ashton had never expected to enter the charity auction she had organized. But when a bachelorette went missing, she found herself standing on stage, the sudden "property" of the most undeniably handsome man in the room.
Walker Camberlane had decided to rescue Paige from her uncomfortable situation with the highest bid. But he was also interested in the Ashton beauty for an altogether different reason.
Paying $10,000 for her didn't give Walker the right to make demands. Yet Paige found herself succumbing to his magnetism and on the verge of doing anything he asked. Anything.
Book Description
So, you think America is a democracy--with representatives of the people, elected by the people in free elections, doing the will of the people in governing the country?
Think again. The growing disparity between rich and poor, the corrupting influence of money on politics, and the rise of mass media run by monied corporate interests virtually guarantee that elections--and the policies of the representatives selected by them--will favor the wealthy few over the poor and middle-class majority.
Who really wields the power in the hallowed halls of our elective institutions?
Why do major corporations and wealthy individuals donate large sums of money to both political parties?
What do these donors expect in return, and what happens when politicians don't deliver?
In this in-depth analysis of American presidential electioins over the second half of the twentieth century, author Daniel M. Friedenberg explains:
How large corporate donations and skillful media manipulation affect major-party candidate choices--perhaps more than voter preference.
Why many voters believe that there is no real difference between "liberal" and "conservative" majority-party candidates--and how this has affected voter turnout in recent elections.
Why presidents in the latter half of the twentieth century have gradually abandoned the New Deal concern for the underdog--and how it has contributed to the growing gap between the wealthy minority and the poor and middle-class majority.
What does all this say about the election system in a supposedly democratic society? And what can we do to change it?
Friedenberg offers real solutions to the problems facing the American election system, including a new focus on improved education for all to narrow the widening gap between rich and poor. He also explains how the vast technological resources unleashed by the computer revolution can be used to create a more equitable American future.
Customer Reviews:
Insatiably Funny - a general eye-opener!.......2002-12-17
I started reading this book with the fear that Friedenberg would start bashing particular Presidents based on their political affiliation, but I was glad to discover that he provides a critique of each leader without much bias to his own beliefs. While the tone of his narrative tends to side with the liberals, he nevertheless thoroughly scrutinizes each administration regardless of whether the leader was a republican or democrat. No president here was exempted from his criticisms. All were judged. His narratives contain numerous humorous anecdotes regarding the various presidents' personal and political follies. The information is also recent, ending with a look at the Clinton Administration and expressing some concluding remarks about what the Bush Administration might bring in the future. He focuses not only on each president's personal weaknesses, but he also connects these personal inadequacies to the president's national policies and the consequences of their failures.
His narrative is an easy read, and it is well-suited for the general public. It is not a concise academic analysis of political science and leadership. Rather, with its humor, wit, and sarcasm - this book serves more as a "wake-up call" by revealing to the public a side of the White House that is in many ways human and vulnerable to the machinations of human weaknesses and dark vices - such as immorality, corruption, greed, sexual scandals, racism, and ignorance. I mainly saw this book as a general read concerning politics, but because of the wonderful humor that it espoused, I simply could not put it down! Friedenberg's writing is crisp, vivid, smart, and funny. It was definitely a good read!

only poetry book I've ever owned.......2004-10-14
damn good book for fans of chris' musical works, but I know plenty of people who don't listen to his music who love it. It's really a book for anyone who likes well written poetry. one thing to point out is, that the book is not out of print and you can get it on his website (www.chrisconnelly.com) for a mere 15 bucks, sites really should get a clue that its still in print and start selling it again..
Chris Connelly of MINISTRY and RevCo.......2003-11-20
I don't know what the last reviewer was thinking, but this is not the Chris Conely of Saves the Day. Its Chris Connelly of Ministry, RevCo, Murder Inc, Damage Manual, and other bands, including a lot of solo work. His style is very influenced by David Bowie, and suggested for anyone that wants to read something a little outside of the mainstream. Lots of great language.
Confessions Of The Highest Bidder Review........2000-09-17
I think that this is one of the best poetry books i have ever read. Chris is an incredible writer and lyricist. I first found out about Chris from his band SAVES THE DAY and i love the lyrics in the songs. Then one day my freind told Chris had a book out so i went to the book store and picked it up. It's even better tahn his music. I think that if you havent had the pleasure of reading some of his work i really think you should pick this up.

An engaging romance........2001-10-23
One pulls for first one man and then the other in this engaging book. Who will she end up with and why? Besides being a mystery involving expensive Lakewood art pottery, one isn't sure who is the bad guy. Romantic scenes are the stuff of fantasy come to life. The plot sweeps you right along as you learn about academic politics in a university and art pottery auctions. The author certainly knows her stuff!

Filled with good experiential exercises.......2006-09-30
DJ Conway is one of the authors usually disparaged by more serious practitioners. Do not approach this book looking for a scholarly tome littered with footnotes, instead use this as a workbook, filled with experiential exercises and you will come away quite satisfied. Conway gives a very workable system for entry into this fascinating field. I have pleasantly worked a couple of the exercises and look forward to more.
An Interesting Read.......2006-09-25
Although DJ Conway has some of the ideas of Shamanism firmly in hand, it's difficult to determine how authentic they are. As a work of artistic storytelling, I find it to be rather compelling. The oak part is easily discernable: there's lots of historical, or mythic elements contained in celtic culture that are lightly brushed upon here. Many references are given, many words defined etc. The ash (the world tree in Norse mythos) is much harder to discern, and for one such as myself, who knows not much more about shamanism than my Thor comics, probably not relevant. However, the double definition of the word is easy to discern, and it goes without saying that one thing Magicians are known for is fighting each other. So I spose you could pick sides, since it's easy to do. There's many sticking points though, and those attempting to fight Conway on her own pages, may find themselves stuck in the thorns...
First you heal yourself, then you heal the World.......2004-07-04
Speaking for myself, I found the true spirit of shamanism in this book. Conway succeeds in connecting it with Celtic culture. She understands the core essence of both subjects. Some readers seem to think that she intended some sort of archeological study of "true" Celtic shamanism. This was clearly not the intent, as is stated in both the introduction and in chapter two, "Shamanism: ancient and modern." She is trying to introduce people to the SPIRIT of shamanism, and in this she richly succeeds. You have to approach this book with an open mind- not unlike the guided visualizations that form an important part of the text.
The goal here is to try to heal modern man's almost total disconnect with the heart of nature- and with the deep archetypical powers. The author is correct in stating that we have cut down the World Tree and blown up the tunnel to the Underworld. This book is to identify and steer the sort of individuals who are born to sense and heal this soul-killing divide. It will point the way to the true teachers.
For a change Llewellyn assigned a first rate designer and artists to this book- the cover and interior illustrations and details add and do not detract from the whole. Of course, I may be biased here- the frontispiece is the sacred Oak....
Good beginner book.......2004-06-04
I found the book quite useful myself and think it would be very useful to a beginner. It covers alot of basics and does leave you ready for the next step, to learn more. But isn't that what an introductory book is for?
pseudo-Celtic Wicca thinly disguised..........2004-01-09
I picked up this book a few years ago... having an interest in things Celtic and in shamanistic techniques. I found it lacking in both.
This is yet another book by Conway which is just Wicca disguised as something else. All of her books sound exactly alike and say exactly the same thing - which some 'cultural flavors' thrown in to try and deceive people into thinking it's actually something new. It's also an easy sell as many neo-pagans and New Age followers are attracted to all things Celtic and 'native'.
Now I'm not going to say there is no such thing as Celtic shamanism - as shamanistic techniques are thought to be able to cross borders, and I see no reason why you can't blend shamanistic techniques with authentic Celtic beliefs. This book, however, is disappointing on the 'authentic' level and marginally "fluff".
This book will not be a good guide for Celtic Paganism - and it definately won't make you a Shaman (tho, as has been said, no book really can - tho you can learn the techniques).
The only reason I gave it three rather than lower is because the questionable nature of this book lead me to search out better sources.
I suggest books by John and/or Caitlin Matthews on the subject of Celtic Shamanism, Michael Harner on general Shamanism, and Peter Bellesford Ellis on Celtic studies for those truly interested in the depths on such things. They're good to start.
However, for more neo-pagan (of which I am) pseudo-Celtic eclectic Wicca - this book fits the bill...
(A note on Conway in general - I question anyone who claims to be as dedicated a devotee to as many different paths as she writes about. And since every book does sound the same, excepting a few particulars thrown in mostly for flavor, this 'suspicion' only deepened the more I read of her books. The scholarship, as with most Llewellyn products, is always questionable.)
