Slow to Warm.......2006-03-17
Book was interesting and provided a genuine sense of life for blacks during the early part of this century. It started slow but towards the middle of the book the pace picked up and I enjoyed it more.
Wonderful, heartbreaking yet redemptive novel.......2006-02-03
This is a fine novel written at a time of overt racial discrimation about members of a family surviving the best way they could. It does have great relevance to the 21st century because although much has changed (this was the pre-civil rights period), much still needs to be changed. This book should be required high school or college reading.
It was ok.......2006-01-26
Throughout the story you can see the talent of Langston Hughes. However, the subject was not unique or original for the current times. Granted, it may have been something special whe it was first written and published. We have all seen movies or read stories with the exact same plot; it's not worth reading if you're looking for a new story.
If you want to experience the beauty of Hughes' writing then you should give this novel a chance. It's a short read at 300 pages, but the poet's talent shines through in numerous passages.
This was my first exposure to the author and I will probably read more of his work along the way. Hopefully, there will be more unique story lines as I continue through his art.
Wow!.......2004-09-24
Such heart! I have read his poetry, but I had never read his prose. So smooth, so wonderful. I adore the characters. They followed me throughout the day. This is written so well, I really felt like I was right there. I also ran through a gamut of emotions while reading this. That's what a book should do - make me feel, make me think, make me wonder... This book did that for me.
A Must Read Classic.......2004-08-17
This book by Langston Hughes captures the life of the Midwest through the eyes of a young growing by in the early 1900's. I thought the portrayal of that life, the struggles and hardships, and the community love despite thiese things, was excellent. The writing was simple and provided a good flow to draw me into the story and to be placed in the time frame. This is a keeper for the library collection.

Refreshing.......2007-03-07
This is the fourth book in the newest Texas Cattleman's Club and is the story of Connor Thorne, twin brother of Jake Thorne from the first book in the series. Strong willed Nita Windcroft has approached the Club several times about mishaps that are occuring on her ranch and when her father is hurt as a result, the club sends ex-ranger Connor to protect Nita. Nita is convinced that their enemies the Devlins are behind all the problems and thinks Connor is there to protect the ranch, but the club fears Nita will be the next target and that the real culprit is after legend Jessamine Golden's hidden gold. Connor is Jake's opposite, he is reserved and responsible...he is afraid to get emotionally involved with anyone because he believes his inner rage will cause pain to anyone he cares about. Nita is instantly attracted to Connor, she is the alpha female, not a shy young maid. She decides she wants Connor and pursues him ruthlessly. However, Nita is just looking for a physical relationship, she knows she can never be wifely material, she can't cook, clean or do any of those domestic chores. She is the ultimate tomboy working the ranch just like all the other hands. Connor can't believe how beautiful tomboy Nita is and when he gets to know her decides he is willing to take the chance of having a real relationship but can he convince Nita this is a forever kind of thing...
I loved this story, Nita is so different than any typical female character in most romances. As a matter of fact, its almost like Connor and Nita have assumed the opposite roles usually given to the man and woman but it really works and I just loved this book. Good addition to the series and don't forget it has the intrigue of the secret diary mystery.
Texas Cattleman's Club: The Secret Diary - Set.......2005-10-11
Back Cover - "I'm here to protect you." - Connor Thorne, Ex-Texas Ranger
Connor's words sent Nita Windcroft's temper soaring. She didn't need a man glued to her side twenty-four hours a day. Especially a man like Connor - one who was used to getting what he wanted...always. Besides, the threats were aimed at her farm, not at her body.
But the former Ranger's persistence intrigued her. Driven, yet strangely remote, he refused to be intimidated by her independent attitude. Worse, he politely turned down all of her suggestive invitations - which just enticed Nita more. Perhaps there was an enjoyable reason for having a round-the-clock protector.
This is hot - Nita is different than any woman Connor has ever dealt with - she is a modern woman who goes after what she wants & what she wants is Connor & she won't take his half-hearted no's for an answer! This book has some hot love scenes - enjoy!

ONE OF MY FAVORITE CLASSICS.......2004-08-02
I highly recommend this one. Classic SiFi at it's best. Great character development, interesting story line, funny at times and believable. Harrison is one of the best, and this forgotten classic should get more attention from the next generation of readers. Read all three in order. It is more fun that way.
Forgotten Classic.......2004-04-07
Do yourself a favor and pick up this book online through Amazon used books or Ebay, you will not be disappointed. This is the type of science fiction book that authors don't write anymore. Imaginative, witty, humourous, and packed with enough adventurous situations to fill a hundred lesser books. The main character Jason din Alt is a jack-of-all trades type character, similar to the Rat in Harrison's other well known novels. This book will always hold a place on my bookshelf!
not so great.......2003-04-13
i read this book when i was in the eighth grade and i liked it a lot. when i got to high school i made my little brother check it out of the library for me so i could read it again. i liked it again. now i'm twenty-five, and i checked it out of the library at college, and i didn't like it very much at all. i remembered a lot more than i realized, and i was surprised to find out just how much i could recall about the book once i got going, but it is really very poorly written. i guess i liked the ideas when i was a kid, but the dialogue is unbearable--everybody talks like a soap opera actor, it's not believeable at all. i finished book one but i couldn't really get started on book two.
Hard to put down.......2002-06-11
I first across this book in 6th grade, and have now purchased it several times in my life to replace all the copies that have gone missing. It is now relatively hard to find, so snap it up if you can. Three great stories, always good dialog, tons of (relevant) humor. I can't believe Harrison hasn't written dozens of screen plays, as these books are very easy to imagine as being made into movies.
If you enjoy the action-adventure oriented brand of Sci-fi, as opposed to the flying dragon type of thing, you will love this book.
Just imagine Ben Afflick in the lead, and you will have a great mind trip. Impossible to put down.
Good 'old-style' space romp.......2001-04-27
A classic from the old 'boys school of space opera' (like Heinlein's juveniles). All 3 are very short novels, they are a very quick read, with lots of action and improbable last-minute escapes. The settings are the most interesting parts of the drama, and how these settings affect the characters that live on these death-dealing planets. The protagonist is a pretty typical super-skilled quick-witted know-it-all, but is fairly likeable -- the con artist with the heart of gold.

Customer Reviews:
Mediocre At Best.......2006-09-29
There are three main reasons to why I did not enjoy this trilogy. First, the story and overall flavor is a bit juvenile. The first story in the trilogy is decent, but the latter two were simple and uninteresting. Second, the main character of these stories is incredibly annoying. A know-it-all, the book repeatedly showed how great the main character was in stark contrast to the rest of the characters who are portrayed as stupid, and well below the greatness of the main character. Third, several things bothered me with the writing style of the books. The author used a lot of words and phrases over and over again. "Jason shuddered" must have been used at least two dozen times, trying to show how much smarter Jason was than the other characters. Also, the second book tries to get philosophical and really does a poor job. The author attempts to promote moral relativism, but does so in an overly obvious dialogue between two characters. I appreciate philosophy in narrative, but it must be done well like CS Lewis and Arthur Clarke. All this to say that the book is a disappointment, there are much better science fiction books out there to read.
Must read!.......2006-08-31
I refer to Deathworld and the others in the triology everytime someone asks me to recommend a SF classic. Believe it or not, I still have the fan magazine where it was first published. Unfortunately, this was the high point of Harry Harrison's career. The Stainless Steel rat series was good (but should have died several volumes earlier), and so was Soylent Green; but Harrison never again captured the magic that was Deathowrld... and I believe I have read and own them all.
Imagine a planet where the grass has curved, needle sharp tips, you sit on a rock and the lichen tries to get you, all the animals have one thing in common - kill the human invaders. Imagine that to survive you need to attend a pre-school for colonists and your survival skills never extend beyond "first grade". This is Deathworld.
If you never read another SF, at least read his finest - Deathworld.
where's the movie?.......2006-04-15
The first volume of this trilogy is a deserved classic of science fiction and, even after all these years, holds up to re-reading. I am surprised it hasn't been made into a film.
The sequels are both fun and do complete the narrative neatly but never really reach the heights of the original novel.
Great, thrilling fun. A must for all sci-fi fans who have yet to read them.
Yay!.......2006-03-09
I have a copy of the original printing of this trilogy that was in pretty bad shape when I bought it and now it is starting to just fall apart because I have read it so much. This is just the first book of the trilogy and it is really good. The second two books are also wonderful and I can hardly wait for them to come out again. In this book Jason must try to save an entire world from being annihilated by the native lifeforms. The people who settled this planet are bullheaded and very violent, they have to be to survive.
The Deathworld Trilogy.......2005-08-03
A pathetic title for a brilliant book. I wonder who the clown was that named it. It could not have been Harrison.

The Only HH Book You'll Ever Need!.......2005-12-18
The Deathworld Trilogy is a collection of three novels detailing three different events in a roustabout-turned-hero's life. Unlike many of Harry Harrison's other novels (e.g. Stainless Steel Rat), these three are written in a style befitting adults. All three stories are well thought out and touch upon several social and historical topics.
While the first two are good, the third one stands out as an epic retelling of the story of Genghis Khan, but set in a science fiction universe. The main "bad guy" is even called Temuchin, Genghis's birth name. It is like reading a story about the Khan in which aliens intervene to help him. Very thrilling, but ultimately saddening as the term "Pyrrhic Victory" is brought home, not only to Temuchin, but also to the people of the aptly named Pyrrus, the planet featured in the first novel.
I first read this trio when I was 11 years old, and I still call it my favorite book, ever. In no small part, it interested me in science fiction novels and opened up a whole new world of modern literature.
Eh...........2005-06-01
Three episodes in one book. Starts out exciting, great descriptions of the dangers of this alien landscape, interesting characters -- BUT.... everything fizzles out by the middle of the first episode.

I love this book!.......1999-08-08
Each short is unique and beautiful. The way he articulates, the metaphors he uses, the message he puts forth....It all comes together and just makes you smile! And I smiled and nodded my head while reading most of this book. I couldn't put it down. I read it straight through in one sitting, and I'm about to go through it again. I really felt this book and learned a great deal from it. From the first sentence of the first reflection and on from there I was and still am captivated.
Product Description
Kahlil Gibran has become one of the most widely read authors of modern times. Much of his popularity derives from his philosophy of love and reconciliation. In the present book Mr. Sherfan examines Gibran's philosophy of love and delineates the ways in which it contributed to the molding of Gibran's literary point of view and of his life style. He also shows how this philosophy is a valid and meaningful one for man and why it awakens the positive response it does in millions of readers.
