Customer Reviews:
Such a disappointment..........2007-07-31
I was excited about this book because I have heard from panels that DC is going to try to regain the specific aspects that enabled us to love nightwing. Apparently, they weren't going to start with this book. This just further hightlights his faults like his annoying uncertainty of his own identity, or the fact that he has become DC's infamous whore throughout the years. According to Birds of Prey, at least that one specfic 'whorish' aspect was slowly being taken away as we hope and expect the former batgirl to tame Dick Grayson, and it almost went to that direction. But Brothers in Blood actually killed that connection, and in a very tactful way too. The inclination barely covered two pages, when those who have been fans of this coupling knows that that particular relationship, if ever distinguished, requires a little more explanation than the usual comicbook break-up. I was very disappointed in this and, for the first time, actually wished that I had never bought this issue.
Nightwing - One Year Later.......2007-03-30
It has been a year since the events of "Infinite Crisis", and Bludhaven has been destroyed, so now Nightwing a.k.a. Dick Grayson is calling New York City home for a little while. Before you know it there is another Nightwing cruising the city dispensing vigilante justice, though he is killing thugs brutally. It doesn't take Greyson long to figure out that the imposter is actually recently resurrected former Robin Jason Todd, whom the Joker killed years ago. To further complicate things he falls in with Clancy Freemont, a high end 5th Avenue fashion designer with superpowers too. And to top it off Nightwing has a new mortal enemy in the metahuman gangsters the Pierce brothers. Actually pretty good in introducing Nightwing into a new continuity after Bludhaven, and the new characters are OK. The only problem is that while there is the three act set up (set up, conflict, resolution) it still feels like it's just the beginning, which I'm sure it is. But I guess I was hoping for a little more closure in the story arc. The new villains are pretty run of the mill, a adequate substitute for long time nemesis Blockbuster. It is actually the conflict between the two former Robins that was the most interesting. I really wanted to see more of them too, and I really wanted to know what was going on inside Jason Todd's head. He's out for revenge, or to continue his role of succeeding Dick, I'm not too sure. And then there was the thing with the bug that was a little silly; OK for a Superman story (though hokey there too), but not appropriate here. But enough with the grips. A pretty good story with some problems, but plenty of action and Dick's scared psyche to keep you flipping pages.
Disappointing follow-up to Renegade
.......2007-03-22
I had very high aspirations for this book for a couple of reasons. First, it follows Nightwing: Renegade, which was wonderfully drawn and had a very cool story involving Superman, Deathstroke & Ravager. Second, it featured Jason Todd, who is one of my fave characters in the DCU. So, imagine my disappointment when I see that the art is very inconsistent (Jason Todd looks nothing like himself out of costume) and the writing is just over-the-top. For instance, Jason is swallowed by a bug creature, but when he escapes, he later becomes a bug-creature himself. Simply ludicrous. I gave it 2 starts simply for the potential it had, and the first act was OK, until things went haywire halfway through. If you want a personal recommendation, read Renegade and skip this.

Book Description
Joe Jones is Anne Lamott’s raucous novel of lives gathered around Jessie’s Cafe, “a restaurant from another era, the sort of broken-down waterfront dive one might expect to find in Steinbeck or Saroyan.” Jessie, “thin, stooped and gorgeous at seventy-nine,” inherited the cafe years before and it has become home to a remarkable family of characters: Louise, the cook and vortex, “sexy and sweet, somewhere on the cusp between curvaceous and fat”; Joe, devoted and unfaithful; Willie, Jessie’s gay grandson, (“I thought he just had good posture,” said Jessie); Georgia, an empress dowager who never speaks; and a dozen others all living together in the sweet everyday. Lamott’s rich and timeless themes are also here: love and loyalty, loss and recovery, staying on and staying together, the power of humor to heal and to bind. Out of print for fifteen years, Joe Jones is a novel of hilarity and joy

good but not best.......2004-01-14
I am an avid Anne LaMott reader. The commentator who said they were off to read ROSIE will NOT be disappointed. That is an extraordinary book. Although I enjoyed these characters they didn't have the usual depth of LaMott's characters. They were all full of flaws, yes, but I didn't actually believe how they felt about each other. And I could find little in me that even liked Joe Jones. I would've rather seen Louise in a book all by herself. Anyway - I am not swayed from my love of LaMott and her work but this wasn't my fave and I certainly don't reccommend it to forst time readers of her work. Do not stop go - go directly to ROSIE.
It's a wonderful book, another gem for the collection.......2003-11-27
In the introduction, Lamott thanks Jane Vanderburgh(sp?) for lending an editing hand to Joe Jones, published a long time ago. Having read the original and liked its quirky, flawed movements, I am now absolutely savoring this rewrite. It is a full novel, rounded and studded with unforgettable characters like the elderly Jessie (the car driving scene - the long one - isi sidesplittingly funny), the romantic but wise Lou, and of course the charming and lovely young Willie, whom we all know out there somewhere, the eternal boy-man. Oh it's all pure delight. Fey to the naysayers! A perfect read for the intelligent reader who doesnt need a Hollywood plot or a pat ending. I will not, howvever, be satisfied until Anne writes a sequel to Rae's character in Rosie. We need the Rae book, Annie! We honestly do. All hail Lamott, writer for women (and men) who think.
Imperfect world -.......2003-11-04
Anne Lamott captures imperfect people in our imperfect world beautifully in this novel. Readers who think Lamott has left them bereft of plot aren't paying attention. The title character's imperfections construct the plot for us. This books is about loving someone despite it all.
Joe Jones is flawed, and does not realize his shortcomings, making those that genuinely care about him the central characters. I found great strength and hope in Louise - she was more physically and spiritually beautiful by the end of this novel than I ever expected. Louise also teaches us by example. Faith and inner strength are not attributes bestowed one time that last forever. They falter, need to be replenished, and are questioned daily, hourly for each of us. I think we forget that sometimes.
I always find guidance in Lamott's writings - snippets and phrases that bolster me and comfort me. "Joe Jones" is no different - the memorable phrase from this being "It's just so time-consuming being me."
Dissappointed at best.......2003-10-10
After reading Bird by Bird and Operating Instructions, I was thrilled to start on Joe Jones.
I've been terribly dissapointed by a flimsy beginning, void of storyline. I've labored through the belly of the book and now find myself wondering whether I'll ever finish it. (doubtful)
I still have faith in Anne Lammott so I'll be trying out "Rosie"... it's hard to imagine that the writer who put out Bird by Bird and made me think and wonder and laugh out loud could have written this boring story where none of the characters mean a thing to me.
oh well I guess we're all entitled to bad moments. My advice? don't read this one if you appreciate her work, it might put you off her completely.
A painful read.......2003-06-19
I had just read my first book from this author entitled "All new people" and had loved it when I picked this book up. I hated it. I didn't even finish it. I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing much ever did. I kept reading it thinking that even if nothing happened I would get involved with the characters and cherish the description of their everyday lives but that didn't happen. The writing was just too abstract and.... weird. The characters had some off-kilter characteristics about them that should have been lovable but I just didn't find endearing. Things weren't explained that should have been explained and things that I didn't care about were expanded upon. I was very disappointed since I loved the first book of hers that I had read but I will read others from this author to see if this is the exception or the rule. Overall, an extremely tough book to even start, much less finish.

Thrill again to the story of a vampire in Las Vegas, based on the TV movie that still has one of the highest ratings of all time! (This story was adapted from the screen by Kolchak's creator, writer Jeff Rice.) Then, experience the terror of a small mining town that has unexplained murders. (Adapted from an unfilmed episode of the TV show.) Third, get the chills from horror/mystery novelist extraordinaire Stuart Kaminsky's original Kolchak tale of experiencing your worst fears! Last, but not least, there is an all-new Kolchak tale from X-Files scribe Stefan Petrucha!
Customer Reviews:
Kolchak Pretty Good.......2006-03-10
These Kolchak comics are good, if you are a fan of the television series. These are some of the stories of the TV series that never have been aired in this book.
A fistful of Kolchak.......2005-03-10
Moonstone Comics first trade paperback collection of its Kolchak: The Night Stalker run gathers together three previously published tales and one brand new one. The original story, adapted by the original author, is told once again. Following that is an adaptation of an unfilmed script, The Get of Belial, from the second season of Kolchak: The Night Stalker that never was. The third, and final, reprinted story is Stuart Kaminsky's Fever Pitch. A mystery about exploding people and the necessity of facing, and not turning away from, your deepest fears. Closing out this anthology is a short yarn by Stefan Petrucha, wherein the intrepid reporter explains what horror means to him. Kolchak chronicler Mark Dawdidziak, author of The Night Stalker Companion and an original Night Stalker sequel entitled Grave Secrets, writes an introduction about how nice it is for the Kolchak universe to begin expanding and Kolchak fan and website caretaker Steve Crow closes with some thoughts about what makes Carl Kolchak so very special to his fans. This collection is a wonderful way to introduce people to Carl Kolchak and no fan will want to be without a copy on their bookshelf. Highly recommended.

Product Description
The Stories and art in this volume of whimsey share one important element. All were generously contributed in an effort to aid the victims of terror in northern Israel. Many of these artists are the leading voices of their respective genres-their politics and points of view vary sufficiently to create a stout dialogue. The result of their joining is BALM IN GILEAD, a delicious anthology of artistic speculations and meditations that, despite theological nuances, move beyond the boundaries of culture to join in a single voice of hope.

Gumbo in Mobile, Dreamland Ribs in Tuscaloosa, nouveau cuisine in Birmingham, and pond-raised catfish in the Black Belt--as varied as that menu, so are the stories and novel excerpts in this collection. Comedy, allegory, and folklore find their way into the pages; as do tragedy, revenge, necrophilia, AIDS, and Shirley Temple dolls. A collection to constantly surprise.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......1999-12-04
This is a wonderful book. I bought it about two months ago and loved each story. I especially loved Mrs. Hunter's short story. Mrs. Hunter was my 11th grade English teacher. Not only was she the best teacher I ever had, but she is also one of the best story tellers I have ever known. I owe my success in college writing (creative and classroom) to Mrs. Hunter! Buy this book!
A collection of stories as refreshing as a mint julep........1999-09-21
A friend from Alabama sent me this book, knowing how much I love Southern writers. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will pass the word. I foundh stories so intriguing I stayed up late and read every single one. Some are hilarious; others are poignant; all are well-written. I recommend doing as my friend did: Give this book to someone you love!
Excellent and varied collection of short fiction.......1999-09-14
This collection by Alabama women writers shows a wealth of talent. The stories are entertaining and provocative, with a surprise around every corner. Particularly noteworthy are the stories by Robin Allers, Sandra Conroy (wife of Pat), Loretta Cobb, Laura Hunter, Aileen Kilgore Henderson and Patricia Lou Taylor. The book is a companion volume to ALABAMA BOUND, A COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ALABAMA STORIES, also published by Livingston Press, and taken together they prove that Alabama's literary talent is the equal or superior to any other state. Highly recommended!

Excellent Entertainment.......2007-05-29
Great book to read. Characters with keep you reading until the end. Could hardly put it down.
Awesome!.......2007-03-12
This is such an awesome book! I would recommend it to anyone, and feel 100 percent sure that they'd love it too!
A Mix..........2006-10-21
Each of these stories has a touch of the ridiculous in them. But I think that was the challenge in writing them. Can you write a story that's partly ridiculous and still make it good? I think that Lynn has.
The Three Wise Ghosts: This is where you first meet the matchmaking Boar's Head Trio, as they're named in several of Lynn's other books. Yes, it's ridiculous to think of a CEO wearing curly-toed shoes and tights... but if you're going to write a story with ghosts, why make them go by our rules? They were the ones pulling the strings here, you know.
The Ghost of Christmas Past: This is Miles de Piaget's story. The talking cat (on Christmas Eve only, of course) is the matchmaker in this one. This story is much simpler than most of Lynn's stories... you get the feeling that there should have been so much more to the story, if only there hadn't been a page limit. It's still good, though, and gives you another glimpse into one of Rhys and Gwen's kids.
And The Groom Wore Tulle: Not many people would think of starting a story with an almost starved highlander in a modern bridal shop. But that's what Lynn did, and she did it well! It might be too much for some readers (as they've written here) that Ian stuffed himself into a bridal gown... but whose to say what YOU would do if you were thrust into the future while so close to death that you likely wouldn't have all of your wits about you? Add to that the fact that most people in medieval times were superstitious, and it's believable enough to be funny.
The Icing On The Cake: This story takes a woman who is so much the out-doorsy-type that she can't cook much of anything ... and a man who is everything that she isn't in the house, and nothing that she is out of it... and then she sticks them in the same house together unexpectedly. I'm actually not too fond of this story, as their falling in love seems more dependant on sexual chemistry and good looks then on character. I like a story where people fall in love with who a person is, rather than what they look like, and Lynn's usually fantastic that way. Oh well.
Good to read about MacLeod's..........2006-02-21
I do love all Ms Kurland's characters, and it's great trying to keep track of the family members. That said, as much as Samuel MacLeod, THE ICING ON THE CAKE, seemed to love his ancestors I wanted him to know that he HAD ancestors living in the same century!! I'm referring to Jamie and Patrick and Ian, who live in present day Scotland. I wished that they could know each other. Honestly, it would have been a more interesting story than what we had.
About James MacLeod and Ian MacLeod.......2006-02-21
All the stories in this book were good, but one thing bothered me in Ian's story, besides the ridiculous idea of wearing a gown. Not once did Jamie ask Ian how his wonderful son Jesse was doing back in the 14th century where Ian had just come from! Or how Megan MacLeod, Jesse's wife was doing.

High Space Adventure in Classic SI-FI Style!!.......2004-04-17
I read this book not knowing at the time that it was just one in a series. I Found THAT out pretty quick!! Regardless, it kept me entralled till the end, and I went hunting for the others!! Great High Space Adventure in the truest of the Classic SI-FI form!! Loads of action without bogging down in technical explainations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes action oriented SI-FI.
Too bad it had to end ..........2003-06-07
Very like the ongoing saga of HH ( Honor Harrington ) by David Weber, this was a great series all the way along. It must be difficult coming up with bigger and better things for a character that feels fully developed, but I do wish they had found something!
Unlike the other reviewer, I found the accent of one of the main characters a *fantastic* touch. Yes, it takes a while to get used to it, but this characters seems more alive / real to me because of it. It was easy to "see" this character in my mind. So I appreciated the extra work that must have gone into creating the accent.
Overall the entire series is a wonderful, fun read. Not to say it's lighthearted, but it is a breath of fresh air. Much like the David Gemmel books. The characters are easy to get attached to, and the story has a depth that can be expanded upon at a later date, if the author / publisher / fans feel like keeping this universe going.
A fitting ending to an entertaining series.......2002-06-07
In the final book in this series we have our hero Sten up against the Emperor himself. The Emperor has gone all nasty and it is up to Sten to use all his skills and allies to pick away at the Emperor and his forces.
As part of the closure of this series we are given the background to the Emperor and the fuel source he controls which was interesting and put many things into context.
Fast moving and entertaining and a good conclusion to the series, my only ongoing irritation with the Sten books is the way the author 'writes' the Scottish accent of one of the lead characters. It's difficult to read and detracts from the pace of the story.
Great series, great finale.......2002-04-13
This is the exciting -- and fitting -- end to the series. Yes, the authors are playing a bit of an ideological trick, but it really makes sense in the end, and I kicked myself for falling right into it.
I've reread this series several times, and it never fails to please. Each book has its own feel, but each is still part of the greater whole. Now if only they'd get them back into print, I could recommend them to more of my friends.
Bait & Switch.......2001-02-26
The author(s) decided that the premise which underlay all the previous books in the series was invalid and tried to convince the reader to that end. Imho they failed. BADLY. They failed to convice me that the prior premise was wrong and their accounting of the designtergration of the society was lame. Ignore this book and read the rest of series instead.

Sensitive Stories and Caring Messages.......2005-12-20
In this collection of essays, Michael L, Lindvall presents sensitive stories and caring messages based upon the life of an ordinary church and its congregation. It is clear that Rev. Lindvall loves these people, who although fictitious, are no doubt drawn upon his own experience serving a congregation in the upper Midwest that served as a prototype for the "North Haven" church.
This best seller is the first of his published works. There is a follow-up "Leaving North Haven" book and two recent (2007) non-fiction Christian works "A Geography of God" and "What Did Jesus Do?" Both also receive five stars by this reviewer on amazon.com
Those who read this one will want to read them all.
Time passes and Rev. Lindvall is no longer serving the church at "North Haven". If you are fortunate enough to hear him preach each Sunday morning at the Brick Presbyterian Church in New York City, then you know that he has a gift for telling stories that reach people, down deep, inspiring, tender, challenging, and filled with light and love.
At the Brick Church, Michael L. Lindvall follows several illustrious pastors of other eras, including two different pastor-authors of much loved hymns: "This Is My Father's World" (Maltbie Davenport Babcock) and "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee (Henry van Dyke)"
Come to think of it, Lindvall's essays come very close to being hymns, and we believe that his predecessors would both appreciate and approve of his writings.
It will be reprinted!.......2001-07-23
I just attended a conference where Michael Lindvall was the keynoter. The book will come out again next year along with his new one_Leaving North Haven_. Rev. Lindvall is a pastor first and a writer second. He was gracious and listened to all our suggestions for his new book. Buy both of them for some wonderful stories of God's grace in the lives of special small-town people.
Read and Chuckle.......2001-06-12
Someone reviewed the book and told several of the stories to a very receptive audience. I then purchased several books as I found them for gifts, and made sure I kept one. I used it for a lesson one Sunday with my Sunday School group, and now they want copies. We all remembered similar situations of small towns, people, traditions and change, and how the Grace of God keeps us growing.
This book is charming!.......2000-04-07
I'm disappointed that this book is out of print. Some friends have heard excerpts from my copy and want to purchase a copy for themselves. Three years ago I gave copies of it as a Christmas gift. I hope the publisher will decide to start printing this again! This book shows that it's okay to be a Christian and have a sense of humor at the same time.
Charming.......1999-08-30
This book is sweet, funny and charming. It's everything we city dwellers think should happen in a hometown and much of it makes us long for a haven. Thank you Michael Lindvall for sharing your thoughts and reflections.
I'm a writing teacher and a Christian and felt that the simple messages were a gentle reminder of caring and goodness. I highly recommend this book and I'm just sorry that there's not an entire series.
