Book Description
Art in the age of digital communication...
Artists have always been early adopters of emerging media technologies, from Albrecht Dürer and his use of the printing press in the 16th century to Nam June Paik's experiments with video in the 1960s. In 1994, the advent of the Internet as a popular medium catalyzed a global art movement that began to explore the cultural, social, and aesthetic possibilities of such new communication technologies as the Web, video surveillance cameras, wireless phones, hand-held computers, and GPS devices. This book addresses New Media art as a specific art historical movement, focusing not only on technologies and forms but also on thematic content and conceptual strategies. New Media art often involves appropriation, collaboration, and the free sharing of ideas and expressions, and frequently addresses the political ramifications of technology around issues of identity, commercialization, privacy, and the public domain. Many New Media artists are profoundly aware of their art historical antecedents, making reference to Dada, Pop Art, Conceptual art, Performance art, and Fluxus.
Artists featured: Cory Arcangel, Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Katherine Moriwaki, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries, Vuk Cosic, Mary Flanagan, Ken Goldberg, Paul Kaiser and Shelly Eshkar, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Mouchette, MTAA, Keith and Mendi Obadike, Radical Software Group, Raqs Media Collective, RTMark, and John F. Simon Jr.

Digital Filters
ASIN: 3540668411 |
Book Description
It is the aim of this textbook to give insight into the characteristics and the design of digital filters. It briefly introduces to the theory of continuous-time systems and the design methods for analog filters. Time-discrete systems, the basic structures of digital filters, sampling theorem, and the design of IIR filters are widely discussed. Important parts of the book are devoted to the design of non-recursive filters and the effects of finite register length. The explanation of techniques like oversampling and noise shaping conclude the book. It is completed by an annex containing a selection of tables of filter parameters for Butterworth, Chbeyshev, Cauer, and Bessel filters. Furthermore, several computer routines for filter design programs are given.
Customer Reviews:
Not good for engineer.......2003-08-05
This book may be useful for college students,
I found a lot of theoretical analysis in it.
But, if you are an engineer, and you want to find something
to guide you to design a digital filter, forget this one.
totally no help.
Covers everything, but still a little short.......2003-05-04
The difficulty comes really as a by product of the sheer size of the knowledge base in this subject. There are now so many papers published on each of the chapter headings that perhaps most writing projects of this sort would end up in an interminable fog.
But there is an urgent need for such books, now that almost anyone can afford a DSP development kit, and you can create the most astonishing filters with characteristics that would be unimaginable some 20 years ago.
But you would need help, and attempting to cover the whole field of design techniques is very difficult in a short time. Mind you, this book is by far one of the best I have ever seen. For instance, it covers the design of elliptic filters, though not really in the depth that you would need to be SURE.. pp27-33 is all there is here. But nontheless, I like the fact the the discussion isn't superficial, and that the sn function is drawn really well, and so on, but I think that more examples are really needed, and especially more help with translating requirments into actual elliptic filters.
There is a section on filter architecture, and this is quite separate from the section on the various low pass approximations. Some terrible books recently have been written in such a way as to mix the two subjects, which is always an invitation to disaster.
The section of Wave Digital filters is admirable. The work by Fetweiss has proved to be much more important than was suspected at the time, and there is some evidence that knowledge of wave digital filters is becoming desirable knowledge for some prospective employers, at least in the UK and Europe...
The idea of covering limit cycles is a brave move, considering how complicated and unnerving this may be for beginners. This is done very well. Even better are the chapters on fixed point roundoff noise - so very important to those of us without floating point hardware to hand! This chapter is superb, and really goes a LONG way toward helping solve real problems. This was my favorite chapter of all.
There is one deficiency in the book, and that is in design techniques where the phase alone is to be prescribed. This is a little alarming. All-pass filters are not even mentioned in the index - this might also cover the Hilbert transform for instance. Another class of filter not described are those filters which produce a pair of outputs with a quadrature relationship between them.
Neither is the subject of filterbank design covered at all (aka perfect reconstruction, and all that). But that's rather specialised.
I can't help but admire the book, and would only gently recommend to use it with other books which are perhaps more dilute in some ways, but perhaps in certain specialised areas, more replete with examples. But otherwise, do get it, since it's very unlikely that you won't be pleasantly surprised and very much informed by it.
The best in the topic!.......2001-02-07
This is the third book that I bought in digital filters within a short period of time. After I read the first two books, I did not feel comfortable with the subject. After I read this book in two days, I feel like I know which way to go. This book gives you the theoretical background, the design procedures, as well as implementation considerations. It seems that all my questions are answered.
This seems to be the first review of the book. This is also my first time to write a review on Amazon. I just want to share beauty of the book.

Book Description
In a time when the Industrial Revolution has become an all-out war, Mad Science rules the World...with mixed success. At Transylvania Polygnostic University, Agatha Clay was a student with trouble concentrating and rotten luck. Dedicated to her studies but unable to build anything that actually worked, she seemed destined for a lackluster career as a minor lab assistant. But then the University was overthrown and Agatha was taken aboard the giant airship Castle Wulfenbach - where it begins to look like she might carry a spark of Mad Science after all.
Customer Reviews:
The fun continues in volume 2.......2007-08-30
Great fun, as are all of the Heterodyne books - I especially appreciate the "overdrawn poking-fun-at-Gothic" artwork throughout, and the "biographies" of the contributors. On a side note, thanks to these, one of my friends is actually trying to build a dirigible... oh well!
One slight problem with several of the Girl Genius volumes - the binding is very weak, and I've actually had to get Amazon to replace this one, as it fell apart when I opened it. Luckily, Amazon is simple and easy, and this one isn't their fault - the publisher is being scrooge-ish with their glue. Examine carefully when they arrive, and don't hesitate to send them back for replacements. This series is too good, and too compulsively readable to miss! (or to suffer with bad copies... )
Mad Science was never so fun..........2007-08-13
Return to the world of adventure, romance, airships, mad scientists and power hungry Nobles. Agatha Clay, now on the giant airship Castle Wulfenbach, wishes she could leave. Pretending to be the lover of a soldier while surrounded by monsters, angry constructs and talking cats is not her idea of fun.
But getting away isn't as easy as it might look when traveling thousands of feet about the ground while hostage to one of the most powerful men in Europe!
Great stuff.......2007-05-16
Phil and Kaja Foglio are marvelous. Girl Genius has an engaging, complex plot line; intriguing premise; characters full of personality; and great art - detailed, beautiful, very expressive, and always keep an eye out for what's going on in the background. There is lots of humor in the Foglios' work, with the text and art working together perfectly. The only downside is waiting for the next volume to be published!
Another excellent book that deepens the field.......2006-10-26
This second collection is just as good as the first one (while there are certain aspects that are better, the "raw fun" of the first one is a little more controlled here). There is little I can say to praise it enough that has not been covered in the other reviews or in the description, but I do want to point out something that makes me love this series.
While Girl Genius starts out as sort of a silly story with an odd cast, it quickly exposes one of its themes: the nature of legend versus truth. In this second volume, we begin to see more and more of the legends that build up the world. In contrast, we get more and more hints that legends do not always tell the story as it truly happens. This juxtaposition between belief and reality plays an important part in the storytelling method. False thing become increasingly chipped away at, enabling a story that seemingly is given away at the start a chance to actually grow and mature. Though we are told in Volume 1 what will end up happening, we quicly learn that there is a big divide in the legends and the reality which brings them about.
You end up becoming entranced, nervous, even though you know "the outcome".
Great fun, this series.
Steampunk Silliness.......2006-09-06
I really enjoyed this comic, which is an unpretentious, clever, and fun story; something too uncommon in comics these days! However I can't rate it as a major work, and the art is only "good enough."
Agatha "Clay" unsuspectedly has mad scientist ("spark") abilities; desireable in a 19th-century-ish Europe where the princelings of the 100 Years War are all mad scientists with steampunk war engines. This adventure, part II of the series, finds Agatha a prisoner in the zeppelin/fortress of Baron von Wulfenbach and his son Gil, where she is mistaken as the girlfriend of a soldier mistaken as the inventor of her inventions! Adventure, danger, and romance intertwine as she makes sense of her new surroundings and finds clues to her true identity (which, by the by, isn't QUITE discovered in this volume, nor are her "spark" talents more than suspected - by the other characters!)
The Foglios do a first-class plotting and storytelling job here, and especial kudos for a part II that stands on its own! The art is humor-manga style, and acceptable if unremarkable. IMHO, however, the artist (McNabb?) drops the ball on opportunities to have fun with some of Phil's silly inventiveness. I was also not impressed by Agatha regularly awakening (after sleep-inventing) in nightwear of the babydoll/merry widow variety.
A 6-page stand-alone story, "Spark of the Realm", is also included. Trelawney Thorpe, a 19th-C Lara Croft, must outwit a mad scientist seeking the powerful crown of King Arthur. The story is ok and the art a bit better than the main feature.
I'd strongly recommend this volume to anyone who enjoys comic manga, fantasy, or steampunk.
Book Description
Do you have what it takes to be a Grrl Genius? Of course you do! You are a smart, funny, beautiful Grrl Genius -- just because you say you are. In The Grrl Genius Guide to Life, stand-up comic and Grrl Genius Club founder Cathryn Michon explains why she is a genius and demonstrates how you can become one, too, by following her easy twelve-step program.
The first step in the program is the most important: Admit that you are a Grrl Genius. Acknowledge that you are beautiful, intelligent, and talented and that you are the only person in the world who can decide just how great you are. In subsequent steps, you will learn to embrace the domestic arts, love your Grrl Genius good looks, celebrate your sexuality, appreciate your Grrl Genius mother, and pass the Grrl Genius message on to others!
Filled with little-known facts about such unacknowledged Grrl Geniuses as Mozart's younger sister Nannerl and Einstein's wife Mileva, as well as hilarious, embarrassing stories from Michon's own life, The Grrl Genius Guide to Life is a must-read for Grrl Geniuses and Enlightened Males everywhere. Michon shares her most humiliating memories -- singing show tunes at her aunt's funeral, crying uncontrollably in an airplane bathroom and holding up the flight -- as well as her moments of triumph, like attending the birth of her niece (a future Grrl Genius) and getting liposuction that not a single human being noticed. This is an uproarious roller-coaster ride through the life of a self-declared Genius -- in which Michon writes about everything from doughnuts to divorce, from physics to push-up bras -- and a comic inspirational guide for those aspiring to Grrl Geniushood.
Cathryn Michon is a genius -- just because she says she is. Read her book, and you will become one, too. As with any twelve-step program, becoming a Grrl Genius takes work. All your life you have been telling yourself that your butt is too big, your ideas are too small, and your love for creme-filled doughnuts is inherently evil. With the help of The Grrl Genius Guide to Life, you will learn to recognize your own brilliance, shamelessly proclaim it to the rest of the world, and eat all the Krispy Kreme doughnuts you want. In case you need inspiration, Michon has included numerous Grrl Genius slogans and Little Pink Post-it Notes; in case you get hungry, she has included her recipe for the best chocolate chip cookies in the world. So go on -- take the first step. Read the book that is guaranteed to change your life forever (or at the very least to make you laugh yourself silly) -- and declare your Genius to yourself and the world!
Customer Reviews:
PURE, HILARIOUS GENIUS.......2007-02-10
I saw Cathryn doing her side-splitting stand-up routine and figured her book had to be at least somewhat funny so I bought it. I was wrong--it is not funny, it is HILARIOUS. At first I thought it was going to be a little young, because of the "grrl" bit in the title. Also I know nothing about 12 steps and wondered if I'd "get it" but I decided to give it a shot. HOLY COW am I glad I did. This women is smart, talented, insightful, brave and honest--and honestly made me laugh until I cried. I was so disappointed when it ended that I flipped it right over and started again from the beginning (true story). The only thing I didn't like about this book was the fact that I didn't write it.
Sassy & Revealing.......2005-05-07
Since I became a Grrl Genius, nearly all my character flaws have mutated into charming evidence of my brilliance. ~Cathryn Michon
When a stand-up comic decides to put a pen to paper, we can only wonder how she will transfer the punch lines to print. Cathryn Michon not only succeeds, she pleases time after time. My sniggling (something between a snicker and a giggle), giggling and laughing loudly intermittently got me sent to my room because I was enjoying life too much while my husband stared aimlessly at the TV.
While many may say this is Bridget Jones at a Tony Robbins seminar, I have concluded this is much more Bridget Jones awakening to the words of Deepak Chopra. How could anyone miss: "your body's inherent wisdom." She is so yoga at times all while reminding me fondly of my best friend in high school who would have me rolling on the floor laughing as we composed fake letters about boys we had met at the beach. Just as we imagined these delicious and uninhibited revelations of fantasy, Cathryn Michon will at times embellish life so as to awaken a woman's wicked naughty side, all while having innocent fun.
Throughout this work-of-art-comedy-routine-in-print, you will be swept into a world of delicious wit, enlivening humor, total honesty, beyond total honesty and did I mention, TOTAL honesty? With a vocabulary to die for at times, Cathryn Michon weaves images of reality with precision.
Through her writing we come to understand her preoccupation with spontaneous doughnut fulfillment and observe her self-destructive patterns of behavior leading her to certain doom. It is in these moments when inspiration strikes and revelations are born of an awakened consciousness in the face of death itself. She also confronts societal ills with a high-class clarity and explores the synchronicity of life. Like Bridget, she learns life's best lessons through putting herself through the paces. She must experience life, sometimes fail and eventually rise to the occasion as a Grrl Genius. This makes her loveable, human and oh so funny.
The Grrl Genius Guide to Life is also filled with research on the subject of scientific discoveries. You will be amazed at what has been hidden by society and then revealed by the Grrl Genius herself.
In fact, you may shock your friends by revealing the details of Einstein's life or explaining how the cotton gin was actually invented by a woman. I learned how to live longer by relaxing in steam rooms and how to understand the deepest of life's mysteries through careful observations.
Sweep aside mundane realities, it is time to pull out the pink postits and cover your refrigerator with quotes like:
"Today is the First Day of the Rest of My Genius."
I loved reading about the cooking competition and at times the writing reads like sardonic slapstick with an evil twist. The author has one of those naughty minds always willing to devise creative revenge tactics for playful investigation only.
Various phrases and sentences also make for witty banter between friends in adapted versions. I said one line while talking on the phone and my friend thought it was brilliant. Do I feel like a genius after reading this book? Yes, and I felt very happy too because I love to find a humorous read that makes me laugh all the way through the book.
~The Rebecca Review
Simply wonderful.......2005-02-24
I read this out of order--meaning, I read the Grrl Genius Guide to Sex with Other People before I read this one. I don't think it matters--this one is a wacky, silly, fun, yet moving, intelligent, and important book. Cathryn Michon's philosophy of self-worth energizes and motivates. Truly inspirational!
Funny and Over the Top.......2004-12-30
Writer/Actress Cathryn Michon has written a funny novel that has a great message: Love yourself. Very visual in description, this book reads like a live performance. Other great love yourself girl's books you may enjoy: Gutsy Girls, the Gifted Girls Series, Queen B Superheroine, the mini-book Queen B's Guide to Being a Superheroine, and GirlTalk.
I laughed and laughed.......2004-12-28
I took this book with me on a recent trip to Aruba....it was the perfect sitting in the hammock and relaxing book. It made me smile over and over,,,,
