Book Description
In this novel/allegory the narrator/author sets sail in the yacht Impossible to search for Mount Analogue, the geographically located, albeit hidden, peak that reaches inexorably toward heaven. Daumal's symbolic mountain represents a way to truth that "cannot not exist," and his classic allegory of man's search for himself embraces the certainty that one can know and conquer one's own reality.

Customer Reviews:
A symbollically non-Euclidian adventure in mountainclimbing........2004-08-01
This is one of those 'secret books' passed from friend to friend, artist to artist. My own initiation into this work certainly came at the most needed moment, and I hope this deliriously engaging analogy speaks to you now as sweetly as it whispered to me back then. Daumal's intriguing characters are hell-bent on marking the mountain that unites heaven and earth, a geographical place that "cannot not exist." Daumal draws obvious inspiration from his metaphysical tutelage under G.I. Gurdjieff, and the book has been radically reimagined by filmmaker and Tarot master Alejandro Jodorowsky in his epic 70's masterpiece "The Holy Mountain." Have a go-go.
A terrific read and a literary classic.......2004-06-12
This is a terrific book even for those who are not into mountain climbing or the spiritual philosophy of Gurdjieff. Indeed, when I first read Mount Analogue more than 25 years ago--back in the days when I ignored introductions and back-cover blurbs--I took it for a surrealistic parody of the SciFi travel fantasies of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells. Part of its appeal for me lay in the way it connected my childhood interests in SF and Fantasy to my growing fascination with the high road of literary modernism. Like some armchair basecamp, Daumal's novel helped me to acclimatize myself before ascending to the loftier and more rarified air of The Magic Mountain and The Waste Land and Ulysses. But it's continuing appeal is that it is an absolutely gripping story, one that seizes you from the first page with all the tenacity of its half-crazed visionary hero Pierre Sogol, and doesn't let go for days and even weeks after you've finished reading it. Here, I think the translator, Roger Shattuck, deserves half the credit, for his English is a pleasure to the eye and the ear and to whatever it is in us that aspires to reach those sublime states where, like Daumal's narrator, we can say : "I ASSURE YOU THERE WAS FIRE AROUND US IN THE AIR!"
A Mountaineering Must.......2002-03-09
I first had the opportunity to read this book following a mountaineering course run by the National Outdoor Leadership School. One of our group, named Dave, had been passing the book on and everyone who read it wrote in the cover and sent it to the next person to read. NEVER a bad review. Helps you to understand how everything ties together in the world. Not too deep but just enough to make you think. Don't let the fact that the author died before completing the book throw you. Read it and you'll understand. Excellent!
One of the top three books that I have read........1998-01-21
This is a book that is wise . . . see if you can finish it. I use it as a text in my outdoor recreation classes. Daumal discuses the adventure of life.
A small gem........1998-01-03
This small, unfinished work is packed with wonderful ideas and a spirituality that appeals to both the head and the heart. Daumal's characters have the conviction that the mythical mountain that reaches from earth to heaven must actually exist, so they do the only reasonable thing -- they mount an expedition. A beautiful book.

Book Description
A compelling investigation of the Jewish community's reaction - or nonreaction - to domestic violence.
In a congregation of devoted worshippers gathered for Shabbat services at the local synagogue, it may be difficult to accept how many wives go home with their husbands to ongoing physical and emotional abuse. In Sins of Omission, author Carol Goodman Kaufman offers a compelling investigation of the Jewish community's reaction - or nonreaction - to domestic violence. Concerned with the sins of the community more than the sins of the abuser, Goodman Kaufman finds that the Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform rabbis and community leaders are not doing enough and are not informed enough to help the abused women in their congregations get the support, protection, and guidance they need. Through her many insightful interviews with survivors of abuse, rabbis, and lay community leaders, the author takes a hard look at the Jewish community, its rules, regulations, and followers, and discovers the ways in which it helps and hinders victims of abuse.
Customer Reviews:
Great, Now what are we to do?.......2006-12-13
This is a hard topic to talk about in the non jewish worrld as it is. Most americans brush it under the carpet. Then you want to talk about the Jewish world. The women are ashamed. It is always a hard topic to talk about. A shanda. But the Rabbi's need to talk about it in their congrregations. I was recently aproached by someone, who said thank g-d it doesn not happen in our community. Most will not talk about it unless it is brought up in our community. No one in the jewish community talks about it on the bima. The biggest thing is to educate, the adults as well as the chikdren.
The author gives some good tips for the community. The community does the assessment, but there is not any jewish organization that has followed through. Unfortunately But, she does give the problems in the jewish community. The organzations and the great jewish volunteers. But there is not enough man power. We have a problem. Action speaks louder than words.
It would be great if there was a author who address the national jewish community, not just Massachusettes. She does put resources in the back of the book.
It's about time.......2005-04-11
I thoroughly liked Sins of Omission, and am grateful to Goodman Kaufman for having so articulately, fully, and acutely written about domestic abuse. As I titled this review, I will say again how it is about time that someone wrote about domestic abuse in the jewish community. The author's suggestions for what to do in the future are what really inspired me - there is hope, there are options, and practical things can be done. I admire her courage for writing about such a taboo subject and hope that her efforts will not go unmatched by communities' responses and actions to combat domestic abuse. The individual anecdotes of victims and survivors are what truly spoke to me, as they should for anyone who reads this book. I fully recommend this book as a necessary read.

Book Description
It is a truism that the issues politicians discuss in campaigns deserve study, but what about the issues they do not discuss? The question of what gets on a presidential campaign’s radar screen, what does not, and why is central to understanding how effectively campaigns function as tools of self-government.
This issue of
The Annals examines dimensions of these questions through articles originally commissioned for two conferences at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. If these articles together amount to a catalogue of complaints about the quality of America’s presidential debate, perhaps that is to be expected. Views on what candidates ought to discuss will always lie in the eye of the beholder. What the contributors to this volume share, however, is the conviction that campaign discourse matters and that defining the campaign agenda is central to democracy.
So long as candidates seek to win 50 percent of the vote plus one, while citizens struggle to find expression of and answers for their concerns, the question "Whose campaign is it anyway?" will be with us.

Book Description
On a hot summer night in 1962, Danny Cogan and his best friend, Matt Lasker, watch as two of their friends engage in a brutal fight that leaves one of them dead and his body unrecognizable. The police believe that the murderer is the victim, and Danny and Matt, the only witnesses to the crime, hide the truth to protect the real killer. They keep their awful secret, but doing so splits their friendship apart.
Forty years later, Danny lives "a hundred miles and a universe away" from the neighborhood where he grew up. All is well in his comfortable suburban life until, unexpectedly, his sister telephones to tell him that she has seen the supposedly dead boy, now a sinister adult, in a Boston restaurant. In his struggle to deal with the truth after so many years, Danny remembers growing up in Suffolk Square, an immigrant neighborhood outside of Boston, and some of the relatives and friends whose own experiences affected his life. As he relives the events leading up to the murder and its terrible aftermath, he comes to understand the consequences of his having failed to speak up so many years ago.
Sin of Omission paints a picture of an ethnic neighborhood in the early sixties, describing how its inhabitants' simmering prejudices have traveled from the old country and re-emerged through three generations of its Russian Orthodox and Russian Jewish population.
Customer Reviews:
You can almost hear those Boston accents, as you read this book........2007-02-17
Katz has penned a riveting tale of adolescent drama in the ethnically diverse neighbohood of a Boston suburb. The story is a warm nostaslgic view of the 1960's while, at the same time, a glimpse into a darker side of prejuidice, bullying, revenge, and redemption. A good read!
A Period Piece With Heart.......2005-06-13
Whether David Evans Katz is transporting you back to turn of the century Russia, or an ethnic Boston neighborhood in the 1950's, Sin of Omission has the ring of truth. The characters come alive as they deal with both ordinary and extraordinary circumstances, and by the end of this riveting tale, they have become our neighbors and our friends and we hate to see them go.
A must read!.......2004-08-31
I could not put the book down.. David Evans Katz created characters that I related to on an emotional level. His style of story telling is right up there with the best.. Spielberg should bring this novel to the big screen.
One of the most engaging ever.......2004-07-26
This was one of the most engaging novels I have ever read. I was on the edge of my chair. I would rank Katz right up there with Grisham, King, Ludlum, Koontz and other well read novelists. Can't wait for his next book to come out. If you don't read another book all year, read this one!
Sin of Omission--a highly satisfying novel.......2004-02-24
Regardless of a reader's tastes, one mark of a good writer is to tell a story through memorable characters. Having read and critiqued several of David Evans Katz's wonderful short stories in another venue, I anticipated quality writing here. I was not disappointed. Sin of Omission is about particular people and their attitudes, yet it is universal in its theme. It's a story of childhood secrets kept into adulthood; it's a story of the multi-level conflict among individuals and cultures. The narrative style is quiet, perhaps not for everyone, but you'll find Mr. Katz's writing to be flawless. His wonderful sense of character and story draw the reader into the world of his novel. Even though the novel ended exactly where it should, I was sad to leave these characters and their world, just as I was getting to know them. Another mark of a good writer is to leave the reader wanting more. I hope that Mr. Katz will oblige us with more of his creativity in the near future.

Important voices.......2005-01-17
Rabbi Abraham Heschel described his work on the prophets as being about 'some of the most disturbing people who ever lived'. In many ways, this descriptions fits all of the women profiled in the book edited by Marcia Riggs. The prophecy of these women was to battle the injustice of discrimination, which they were facing on many different levels -- racial prejudice, gender discrimination, socio-economic class bias. They dared to speak out even when their own community, even when others just like them, were against them. As Julia A. Foote observed in her story, 'I had always been opposed to the preaching of women, and had spoken against it, though, I acknowledge, without foundation.' While it seems illogical on the surface to think that the church would not be supportive of the voice of ethical prophecy, in fact it sometimes takes a leading role in the community in silencing that voice.
Yet, the very idea that the call to ethical prophecy should be unusual in the church is part of the urgency of the call. The call to justice should be standard -- it should be part of the ongoing life and activity of the church, not as a special project, and not as an isolated event.
Ethical prophecy, particularly in this setting, grows impatient. It represents not the power of the world, but power of a different kind, a compassionate yet destructive power, transformative of the world in ways the world does not expect. The majority of people likely may never understand this prophecy; some may be opposed to it, even violently.
Prophets are those women and men who dare to speak out for justice, who in the end do not shrink from the task appointed to them by God, though they may try to run away from it at first. Jarena Lee, upon feeling the call of God, sought to discern if it was in fact God, or some other spirit, who was tempting her into being a disruptive force in her community. Both Jarena Lee and Julia Foote experienced the reaction Jonah had when he was called to prophecy -- 'No, Lord, not me.' Yet finally, these women gave experienced the call of the Lord in such a way that no peace could be gained by turning away.
Often the first hindrance to be overcome by those called to be prophets is their own disbelief. Even in the midst of a wondrous vision of being prepared and commissioned for her task by God, Foote said, 'If I go, they will not believe me.' Jarena Lee also felt held back by her lack of belief that she, 'his poor coloured female instrument', could be called to such a task. Nonetheless, both these women came to understand that they were in fact called to prophecy, such that women later could take heart in themselves not only as individuals but to work together, as Fannie Barrier Williams said to the women beginning the task, they must not be timid.
Having reconciled themselves to their calls, these women then took the first steps into the world. Like the Biblical prophets, these women related faith and history, bringing faith out of the temple and into the marketplace, for the world to hear. For both Julia Foote and Jarena Lee, this call was first tested within their church communities, which at first actively discouraged them.
Julia Foote found herself excommunicated from her church for preaching, albeit in a typically institutional fashion, the truth behind the actions and the public spin put upon the institution's actions varied dramatically. Although she followed the rules of the institution, because she by her very being, being a woman with a call, disturbed the status quo, she found her appeals unheard.
Virginia Broughton had similar experiences with this, and Fannie Barrier Williams found in her work in the world that help was not forthcoming from women of other races, as she would have expected. The whole of society was, if not actively working against her efforts, was at best indifferent to Williams' call to justice, to the betterment of the lives these women.
Some signs of authenticity appear to the prophet, in a peace that descends upon the acceptance of the call, not my will by thine be done. Jarena Lee described it as a feeling on tranquility. Julia Foote, at the point of accepting her charge, said it felt like peace. It also rests in a strengthened resolve, the courage to continue against those forces, unreasonable and unreasonably reasonable, such as the church group which tried to discuss matters with Julia Foote.
Foote was able to persevere in the face of opposition because she found in other ways that '...the Lord was blessing my feeble efforts'. The prophet often feels that the power of the world is against her: And yet there is courage to go on, and work through holy anger toward a change in the world. In this great transformation, there lies the chief element in ethical prophecy.
Hope is the chief element in ethical prophecy. A wholly negative message would not be powerful, as it would have no power to transform. Prophecy is more than warning, it is changing and renewing.
This hope can be as simple and powerful as Jarena Lee's realization that '...the Saviour died for the woman as well as the man'.
Indeed, in Riggs' book, there are dozens of African-American women highlighted who had the call and the courage to take up the prophetic ministry. This is an important collection, that this review barely touches upon. From a woman named Elizabeth (only her first name survives, along with her prophetic words) and Jarena Lee in the 1700s to Shirley Chisholm of our time, women famous and not are included here, bearing witness to constant struggle for justice.
