A highly charged, tightly written tale of intersecting lives that provides us with both an engaging and powerful story as well as a vivid portrait of life in Egypt in the late 1960's.
Customer Reviews:
Great Insight into Egypt.......2006-09-01
I loved the book and its depiction of daily life in Egypt. you can almost feel wanting to visit cairo while reading it. I felt the same reading Arab Voices.
An Egyptian Rashomon.......2004-03-27
Pension Miramar engages a fellaha (a young peasant woman), who ran away from her village to avoid a forced marriage.
She becomes the centre point of the attention of all the pension's inhabitants, because of her simplicity and natural beauty, but also for her ambition to get out of her traditional role of maid without education. The fellaha's battle to escape her humble fortune is mingled with her emotional love life and the more or less violent advances of some residents.
Like Kurosawa in his magisterial movie 'Rashomon' (based on a short novel by Ryunosuke Akutagawa), the evolving story is told from (here) four different angles (persons), revealing slowly the real motives behind the different clashes.
This novel contains some typical Mahfouz characters, like the career man, the wealthy playboy or the impostor ('employed by one master, serving secretly another').
Some themes are also familiar: 'If you have power, you have everything', or 'Everyone else around us behaves as if they didn't believe in God's existence'.
The novel is also a reflection on the failure of the Egyptian Revolution of 1952: 'But was there an alternative? Only the Communists or the Muslim Brotherhood.'
This is surely a worth-while read, but the book has not quite the finesse of its Japanese example.
What a plot and so many twists too-----Brilliant.......1999-11-08
It was a fascinating read. The place, the time and the characters-- only mahfouz can write a book this way
Excellent........1998-04-24
No one, but Naguib Mahfouz can depict internal pain and human struggles with such elegance.
A Nostalgic Recollection.......1997-04-26
A writer at the end of his prime visits Alexandria for a restful break. As he sits in an easy chair in a pension run by his
old friend, he sees two worlds juxtaposed: in the first he recalls his own past, his heady days of idealism and political
activisim; in the second he examines his life against those of the other, younger, guests at the pension. He tries to
reconcile his own views and visions and dreams with those that he sees around him. Touched with a despairing sense
of terminal nostaligia, he manages to re-examine his own life in its entire context -- and still be able to smile.
Book Description
The U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Miramar is an essential component of America's homeland security, as aircraft from this base patrols the country's border with Mexico as well as the international waters of the open Pacific. The Marines operated part of the base during World War II, when their island-hopping campaign was crucial to Allied victory in the Far East. The Navy took over operations on the base after the war and until 1997, when the Marines regained control and established both jet and helicopter squadrons therethe aviation combat units of the 3rd Marine Air Wing and the reserves of the 4th Marine Air Wing. During the Navy years, the popular 1986 Tom Cruise movie Top Gun was filmed on the base, which is the largest singular piece of dedicated land on the City of San Diego map.
Book Description
Richard Bode left an unfulfilling career and an unhappy marriage to seek the truth about his life. On a California beach he contemplated the sea and shore, and tuned himself to the rhythm of the tides. His authentic self emerged. And in this remarkable and beautiful book, he shares the lessons he learned about the art of living. What does it mean to be a husband and a father? What does it mean to be a success, to be someone's lover, someone's son? Bode finds surprising answers in surprising places: in a sunset, in a piece of beach glass, in conversations shared and conversations overheard, in memories of his father. Beachcombing At Miramar is filled with unforgettable moments: a funeral for drowned fishermen, birds at dusk, and constellations in the night. And with each word picture, painted with the passion and clarity that Gauguin sought in Tahiti, Bode shows us how to see with new eyes the choices we make - from relationships we choose to relationships we flee, from careers we pursue to the ones that consume us.
Download Description
Beachcombing at Miramar is the tale of a man who moves into a cottage on a California beach to find out who he is and what he wants out of life. Slowly, he learns to see as a child sees, and through the ebb and flow of the tides, he gradually gains insight into what makes an authentic life. With all the lyrical wisdom and passion that moved and delighted readers of Richard Bode's First You Have to Row a Little Boat, Beachcombing at Miramar moves, with surprise, gently and beautifully toward the ultimate goal--a life well lived.

A must read.......2007-08-24
This book is full of wisdom. I read it once and immediately started reading it again. There is so much to learn from it and to apply in our life. Everyone goes through a period in their life in which they are looking to find authenticity in themselves, this book will help them find a way. I also bought extra copies to share with my close friends. This is a must have on your home library.
After reading these reviews..........2006-11-18
I bought the book based on the reviews read here. Amazingly, reading the disparate views on this book allowed me to understand something I read years ago and have always wondered about the validity of... and that is: "Others are merely mirrors of you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects something you love or hate about yourself."
I have no idea where I read that but I've always rather doubted what it implied... now I think I'm getting a handle on it... I chose to buy the book because I'd rather heed the words of someone finding reflected in themselves, not outright vituperation but instead almost non judgmental... ahhh... reflection... on the worth of the thing...
Seems almost simple-minded of me to bring it up but then, perhaps simple-mindedness is something I "love or hate about myself"...
attitude of author did not reflect title .......2006-04-08
When I came across this book, I hoped that I had discovered a treasure. Once in a while I will find a book of nature and introspection that takes a place among my personal classics. This definitely was not one of these jewels. Richard Bode comes across as anything but "authentic". He seems extremely smug and extremely judgemental. If you expect a soul-broadening experience, forget it. He sounds like a rich, nasty, and self-satisfied old spoiled brat and reading his book will only make you feel sour.
Beachcombing at Miramar.......2004-11-04
This thin volume could change your life, if you have what it takes. Mostly, you'll need courage, the courage to shake off a lifetime of cultural conditionings that turn us from human beings into human doers and consumers. And you'll need the awareness and strength to keep allowing your sense of being to break out and through. This book will show you how to walk a beach, how to move comfortably in your own shoes, how to relax back into your own thoughts and feelings, how to release your compulsiveness and easy ability to distract yourself with the slightest impulse. This beautifully written book is about a remarkable man who was able to turn his life into a kind of Zen meditation and then share it with his readers. Actually, it reminds me of Henry David Thoreau.
Inspirational.......2004-10-30
What an inspirational gem of self-reflection and dicovery is "Beachcombing at Miramar"! Richard Bode writes eloquently, with thoughtful poise and quiet power, about his search for Truth. Bode's gift to readers is to share pearls of wisdom, life lessons, he finds or recalls as he strolls a California beach. For him, the beachcombing is a metaphor for truly observing and discerning life meanings. Coming out of a long and troubling marriage and giving up a lucrative career to identify and pursue his heart's desires, Bode is Everyman grappling with the meaning of life. A major theme of the book, so important for people in today's society to really hear, is the value and strength of being in touch with the spiritual Self. In the chapter "Stone With a Hole in the Center," Bode writes, "Not all men are born to be saints, but I believe we are all born with a voice within that we tend to ignore until it becomes so indistinct we barely know it's there." The author's musings help the reader rediscover that inner voice and the value of listening to it. One of my favorite chapters is "By-the-wind sailor," about little jellyfish that can't steer and are therefore at the mercy of the elements. Bode makes the point that humankind need not be like those jellyfish because we can listen to our inner voice and make choices for ourselves. The author learns for himself: "I am not drifting. I am moving by design, aware of the teeming life about me and the choices I must make -- when to resist, when to accept, when to bide my time." This book helped me listen to my inner voice and find my way to greater love, joy, and peace. I highly recommend this gentle guide for beachcombing through life.

Fun Read.......2001-11-20
I really liked both of the stories in this book. I liked that MacComber developed the father/daughter relationship between Bethany and Ben as much as the romance between her and Mitch. I really got to know and like all of these characters. The only criticisms I had was that I wish that there was dialogue written for Susan and Chrissie as they did their matchmaking and between Bethany, her mother, and Peter Ross.
I enjoyed the Matt/Karen dialogue as well. You can feel both of their pain because they divorced even though they still loved each other. You root for them throughout the whole book. I especially laughed at Scott's "advice." It was great comic relief for a serious subject.
A feel good novel.......2000-08-31
The storyline in this series of books revolves around the efforts of one family trying to inject some new life into their small community in Hardluck, Alaska. The brothers run a small airline service (mail, people, deliveries), and employ a team of pilots. The community is heavily male oriented and in an attempt to get more females into the town, they run an ad for female staff offering them each a small area of land upon completion of a year long contract. This book comprises two novels (one pilot per story).
I had not read anything from this author prior to this work, but I found these two very enjoyable. The plot was lightweight, but the characters were sweet and innocent (compared to some of the darker, tortured heroes around these days). I went to bed with a nice glow after the requisite happy ending and look forward to receiving the others in the series soon.
The Last Two Bachelors.......2000-07-20
It wasn't a surprise that Christian was not able to function without thinking about Mariah after he stop being so stuborned. I knew all along that he would eventually admit that he was in love with Mariah. Nice to be able to dream of such romantic times and put yourself in their place for a time. Debbie Macomber's books keep you reading on and you do not want to stop reading once you start, but must, sigh!
great wrap-up.......2000-07-05
This book was great! It wrapped up all the happenings in Hard Luck, Alaska. It also rapped up all the characters live's. This series left no loose ends. I liked this book because all the characters from the previous two books were brought back in and had a part in the story. This book showed the bond between all the people of Hard Luck. This was an easy read. You will want to keep reading to find out how everyone's stroy ends. This book continued the bond between the three brother's Christian, Swayer, and Charles. The idea of bringing women to Hard Luck worked out for all involved. This book finally finds Duke Porter, Midnight Son's best pilot falling in love. Debbie Macomber's books are always well written, if you have enjoyed any of her other books, this series is a must read. Unlike some other series, this one left no loose ends. This series was one of the best I have read. By the end of this book I wanted to live in Hard Luck and find a handsome man. While reading this book you feel like you know everyone personally. Abbie and Sawyer's son, Scott, ends the book for us all by telling how everybody's lives have settled into place. You will enjoy the great advice of this young boy as he helps, and watches the people of Hard Luck fall in love. It was a great way to end the book. This is a must read!

Book Description
A crewman has been murdered aboard the U.S.S. Trident, and all evidence points to Ensign Janos of the Excalibur. Captain Mackenzie Calhoun is reluctant to accept that Janos, a powerful non-humanoid whom the captain has known and trusted for years, could be a killer, and immediately launches an investigation into the crime. But this troubling murder mystery soon escalates into a full-fledged diplomatic crisis that threatens to pit Calhoun and Captain Elizabeth Shelby against the entire United Federation of Planets -- and the Starship Enterprise.

Product Description
In fifth-century Britain, only a few souls believed Merlin the Enchanters prophecy, that the once and future king called Arthur would one day rescue them from fierce and deadly Saxons. In a world where king simply meant warlord, many wondered: would there even be a Britain left for Arthur to rule once he was born and old enough to wield a sword of his own?
One man refused to let that dream fade into nightmarish despair
Freedom is all that matters. So says spy and master of disguise Marcus ap Iorwerth of his greatest dream. For years, he has courageously struggled to unite Britains feuding internal factions and derail the ever-encroaching Saxon threat that has made his homeland a deadly place.
So when a mysterious stranger delivers a gruesome, bloodstained effigy fashioned to look like him, Marcus immediately knows its both a warning and a challenge. He and his wife Claerwenwhose gift of second sight makes her a target as wellrun headlong into the daunting fray. Rival factions are instigating war both among themselves and with the Saxons, and while Marcus sets out to quash their treachery, Claerwen discovers another crisis. Those same factions have mounted a desperate search for one of Britains most cherished symbolsa magnificent sword of the ancient high kings that has been lost for decades. She knows the sword must be found; it is part of Britains future and will pass to a great king called Arthur who has been prophesied to come. With battle about to erupt all around, Marcus learns the stranger, an assassin bent on killing him, may be one of the last sources that could lead him and Claerwen to the sacred sword.
The Anvil Stone brings the volatile tribal nature of Dark Age Britain to life and deftly interweaves it with its mystical Celtic roots and the promise of hope found in the Arthurian legend. A stunning display of the storytellers craft, this book is the third in the spectacular four-part Macsens Treasure series that began with Into the Path of Gods and In the Shadow of Dragons.

Suspenseful battles, romance and excitement.......2006-05-20
Genre: Historical Fiction
Title: The Anvil Stone
Author: Kathleen Cunningham Guler
Marcus ap Iorwerth and wife Claerwen are battling the Saxon invasion of Britain in the fifth century; an interesting couple that most readers will take to heart. Marcus is a spy with an alter ego The Iron Hawk, while Claerwen is blessed with the second sight, also known as "Fire in the head." The two are embroiled in the search for the sacred sword. Meanwhile the Princes of Rheged are battling amongst themselves while a much greater threat is approaching. Will the sibling rivalry cause the loss of their land to the Saxons or is the elder head of Rheged still in charge? Will King Uther pull himself away from the love of his life, another man's wife and join the defenses? These are just a few of the questions readers will ask as they journey through the countryside with Marcus and Claerwen. During a major battle the two are separated and a long and excruciating separation begins. Will Marcus and Claerwen ever be reunited or will the assassin, Handor kill them both?
Each chapter is filled with suspenseful battles, emotional heart wrenching decisions and the underlying romance of Marcus and Claerwen. Extensive research makes the story realistic and the scenes believable. Although the use of the Welsh names does distract from the plot in that the pronunciation is foreign to most readers, the story is well written and brings life in fifth century Arthurian times to life. A good read for historical fiction fans, especially those enthralled with King Arthur.
Author Kathleen Cunningham Guler is the author of the four-part Macsen's Treasure series, which won the Colorado Independent Publishers Award for fiction in 2002. This book is the third in the series. She is a descendant of the Celtic nations of Scotland and Wales, a member of the Historical Novel Society and the International Arthurian Society.

A Great Reading Experience.......2006-04-11
Kathleen Guler has given me a whole new appreciation of the historical novel. She has integrated the elements of romance, adventure, mystery and suspense in this fifth century narrative. Guler has captured the suspense and action of today's most popular contemporary adventure writers.
Political assassins and spies, monarchs and townspeople, make up the cast of characters in this spellbinding work. Swords and daggers replace hand guns and switchblades as the weapons of choice. This is a story of the battle to survive in an era of violence.
A thread of tender affection, romance, and passion is skillfully woven into the story.
Mysticism, magic, prophecies, visions, dreams, and nightmares, are intertwined into the well developed the plot. These add to the sense of danger faced by Marcus and Claerwen. I often found myself experiencing their pain and the loneliness of their separation. I became hopelessly captivated right up to the dramatic surprise ending.
Enchanting settings from Britain's history are brought to life though Guler's word pictures and descriptive phrases. The book has been thoroughly researched. Kathleen Guler is well qualified to author this compelling novel.
I highly recommend this book to both the scholar and casual reader of Arthurtian England. This highly acclaimed series is a great place for the modern reader to take a step back in time to unearth the pleasures of reading another genre of novels. A great reading experience.
An extensively researched historical novel depicting the tale of spy and master of disguise Marcus Ap Iorwerth.......2006-04-09
Book Three of the "Macsen's Treasure" series, The Anvil Stone by Kathleen Cunningham Guler is an extensively researched historical novel depicting the tale of spy and master of disguise Marcus Ap Iorwerth, his wife Claerwen, their confrontations with rival factions and the Saxons. As the story progresses, Claerwen, with her sense of secondary vision manages to grasp an understanding of the legendary sword which will be lifted and possessed by a future king Arthur, but the sword must first be found. The Anvil Stone is an outstanding tale and very highly recommended, especially to all fans of medieval literature and lore focused on the Arthurian era and Dark Ages in fifth-century Britain for its highly accurate and enthralling depiction of an already intriguing tale. Also recommended are the two previous books of the Macsen's Treasure series, "Into The Path Of Gods" and "In The Shadow Of Dragons".
Fresh look at a well loved tale.......2006-03-29
Reviewed by Sondra Fowler for Reader Views (3/06)
"The Anvil Stone" is an unusual take on the age old Arthurian tale. We are taken on a side trip of sorts. We meet the characters of Uther and Merlin the magician in guises other than uncaring tyrant and all knowing mage. Uther is given passion and doubt, Merlin, in the character of Uther cousin Prince Myrddin Emrys is an eccentric man with visions and unknown talents. The major forces of this story, the spy Marcus ap Iorwerth and his equally daring wife Claerwen, wind their way through this tale of intrigue and war.
Marcus receives a cryptic warning in the shape of an effigy left by an elusive stranger setting him and his wife on an adventure to uncover the truth behind the effigy, a growing Saxon threat and the mystery of Claerwen's growing visions that lead to a missing sword of great importance.
"The Anvil Stone" is fresh look at a well loved tale. I found myself in a believable world of warrior kings and Saxon invaders. The characters were full had wonderful voices and individual points of view. There was less pageantry and more grit, a behind the scenes approach that I truly appreciated. Even the magic more dark and utilitarian than the usual pyrotechnic displays felt possible. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of fantasy or the Arthurian Tales.
THE ANVIL STONE Is An Exhilarating Pre-Arthurian Yarn!.......2006-03-27
This is the story of the continuing adventures of Claerwen & Marcus, a husband and wife spy team in pre-Arthurian Britain. The story began with the first two novels, "Into the Path of Gods" & "In the Shadow of Dragons."
This time the story opens with a gruesome effigy delivered by a mysteriously hateful stranger to Marcus. Is it a warning or a challenge, or perhaps both? Marcus sets out on a quest to find out with Claerwen, who has the gift of second-sight or "fire in the head." Intertwined in the tale is Uther, Arthur's father, Myrddin, otherwise known as Merlin, Octa the Saxon and a cast of many other integral characters.
Their adventures, at times, cause Marcus and Claerwen to be together but at other times force them to be apart for many years. Above all they try to find one of Macsen's Treasures and discover what the name of this object could indicate, Excalibur.
This is a romping good read and every page opens an exciting door to another mystery to be solved. Read these books, you absolutely will not be disappointed! Thank you, Kathleen Cunningham Guler, for another outstanding novel in this four part series! I'm very much looking forward to the final book but will be very sad to see this wonderful story come to an end!

unknown reality.......2002-04-23
Outstanding. Best understood after first reading 'The Seth Material' and 'The Nature of Personal Reality', also Seth books by Jane Roberts. There is a second book (Book II) to this series that completes the study on the unknown reality. Very intricate and intense reading and very much worth the effort.
Orgasmic Experience.......2001-07-27
This is an absolutely mind-boggling and exhilarating read. This is the third Seth book I've read and I dig them all. As I read I can feel myself becoming an intelligence residing outside time and space. I highly recommend to all those who are as certifiable as me.

The material brought forth by Seth is always amazing and deeply fundamental. This book is another in the series of Seth teachings and has the same, extraordinary level of perception and wisdom as the other Seth books. It should definitely be included in any reading of Seth, and for those who have read previous material, this adds another segment to this fascinating collection of writings. After reading Unknown Reality, I feel closer to Seth and his messages than before. I am very glad to see this material is being carefully compiled and released so its messages get broadly distributed. - Mark Greenia, author of "Energy Dynamics: Conscious Human Evolution."
thrilling in its implications.......1999-02-22
This is the fourth Seth book I've read, and my one-line summary up there says it all. Easier to read than Volume One of "Unknown Reality", and I think more exciting even than "The Nature of Personal Reality". It's kicked me off on some of my own adventures that would have been inconceivable to me before.
