Book Description

“A stranger could drive through Miguel Street and just say ‘Slum!’ because he could see no more.” But to its residents this derelict corner of Trinidad’s capital is a complete world, where everybody is quite different from everybody else. There’s Popo the carpenter, who neglects his livelihood to build “the thing without a name.” There’s Man-man, who goes from running for public office to staging his own crucifixion, and the dreaded Big Foot, the bully with glass tear ducts. There’s the lovely Mrs. Hereira, in thrall to her monstrous husband. In this tender, funny early novel, V. S. Naipaul renders their lives (and the legends their neighbors construct around them) with Dickensian verve and Chekhovian compassion.
Set during World War II and narrated by an unnamed–but precociously observant–neighborhood boy, Miguel Street is a work of mercurial mood shifts, by turns sweetly melancholy and anarchically funny. It overflows with life on every page.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable characters.......2006-08-13

If you enjoy Alexander McCall Smith's characters, you will certainly enjoy this book. Each person comes alive in his own special way and I read more and more slowly to make the book last just a little bit longer.

5 out of 5 stars HIS BEST WORK.......2006-08-07

I fully agree that this is Naipaul's best work before he went over to the dark side. His work in the recent years have been full of dark humour.Miguel Street is the begining of Naipaul's love of dark humour. It's about a young man and all the people that are a part of his child hood.It shows you that even the lest likely person in your neighbourhood can have an impact on your life. From each new charater he introduces us to our protangonist gets something. From lessons in biology to lessons in literature.......he acquires his knowledge from the people around him.In the end it makes him a man.

I read this book while attending school in Trinidad and since then it has always stuck in my mind.Whenever i feel home sick(since I live in Japan now)I pick up Miguel Street and have a good laugh. No matter where in Trinidad you live you can always find a Miguel Street. This book is a wonderful master piece and I encourage all to read.Even if you don't know where Trinidad is you will want to visit there by the time you read the last page.Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Little gems on a necklace.......2006-07-05

It feels extremely lighthearted and enjoyable to read this magnificent collection of short stories! You just don't want to put this book down. The language is so smooth-flowing despite the use of some local slang. Naipaul should write more short stories! Although all these stories are set in the same place, Miguel Street, and some or all the characters are mentioned in each short story, every character/story is unique and is itself a gem on a necklace!

5 out of 5 stars a GREAT collection for adults and children alike.......2006-01-29

This is an excellent selection of short stories. Each one is extremely condensed and complete in itself. Great bedtime reading when you don't have time or attention span for a novel. I didn't get the feeling that any were meant to be a novel or were failed novellas. My friend said that in Kenya these short stories were used as study material for the elementary school. For that purpose too, these stories are great examples of what people of color are able to achieve, both the writer and the subjects, without sentimentality.

2 out of 5 stars Funny?!?!.......2004-02-14

The book was more sad and pathetic than funny. The narrator first mentions that the street is more to him than a slum (what it looks like on the outside) as if by the end of reading we would learn to love it too. But by the end of reading Miguel Street, the street seemed more like a slum than before and it seemed like the only thing to do was to get out of it and move to the West instead of try to make it better and everyone in it that tried to make it a better place to live ended up a lot worse than they had been in the first place. Where's the humor in that?

Book Description

"A thoughtful and historically insightful book . . . the Young Lords challenged the system as no one else has done before them. . . . Their philosophy served as an inspiration for many of us."—Representative Jose Serrano (Democrat, New York)

"This account of the formation of the Young Lords is fascinating. . . . [It] grows as one reads until one is experiencing elements of the epic, the surprising, and the tragic."—Norman Mailer

In 1968 Miguel "Mickey" Melendez was a college student, developing pride in his Cuban and Puerto Rican cultural identity and becoming increasingly aware of the effects of social inequality on Latino Americans. Joining with other like-minded student activists, Melendez helped form the central committee of the New York branch of the Young Lords, one of the most provocative and misunderstood radical groups to emerge during the 1960s. Incorporating techniques of direct action and community empowerment, the Young Lords became a prominent force in the urban northeast. From their storefront offices in East Harlem, they defiantly took back the streets of El Barrio. In addition to running clothing drives, day-care centers, and food and health programs, they became known for their media-savvy tactics and bold actions, like the takeovers of the First People's Church and Lincoln Hospital.

In this memoir, Melendez describes with the unsparing eye of an insider the idealism, anger, and vitality of the Lords as they rose to become the most respected and powerful voice of Puerto Rican empowerment in the country. He also traces the internal ideological disputes that led the group, but not the mission, to fracture in 1972. Written with passion and compelling detail, We Took the Streets tells the story of how one group took on the establishment—and won.

5 out of 5 stars As a Black Male this book made me cheer proudly.......2006-06-10

I gre up during the 80's in west harlem, later the BX, went to manhattan center high school on 116 & pleasant ave .... you can't grow up anywhere in new york city and not recognize puerto rican pride, all you have to do is head up to Orchard Beach after memorial day, but it's a powerful part of the NY experience ....... I picked this up because of the Lincoln hospital story, and garbage offensives, these men and women are patriots of the black and latin community! The New York City minority community! great read, I learned about them in a american history class @ laguardia comm college, and was surprised I'd never heard of them before, I'd passed by lincoln hospital over 100 times, to hear about them being reason for it being built! I'll say it's a different time period now, but the children of NYC need to learn about this group, and movements like these, to learn discipline, and study the pride but learning journey of mister Melendez, then kids wouldn't get lost, because we are losing our city now as the rents are escalating, people are hurting now, and this knowledge is key to a new generation that needs to move forward and stand for something, not just accept circumstances, this book is excellent, powerful, and informative! True "hood", cultural, minority heroes! I'm glad and insprired by it

5 out of 5 stars A Dream Realized.......2004-02-28

Miguel Melendez has given us a thoughtful, inspirational, and sensitive account of the Young Lords Party and also of the many pivotal events of his own life. I loved reading this book full of cultural tidbits and an insider's history of a group of dedicated individuals. This book offers important lessons for today's youth, many of whom feel no connection to the larger society. It serves as a tremendous contribution to young people by sharing positive ways to channel rage and frustration with one's social and emotional condition. The writer brilliantly shows what it is to search for meaning and purpose in one's life as he questions events occurring around him.

Quiero agradecerle a Mickey para haber escrito un libro tan bello que demuestra que todos tenemos el derecho a la humanidad y dignidad.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Boricua History- Palante!!!.......2003-06-26

Micky Melendez has written an excellent easy to read history of Puerto Rican efforts for social, political and economic empowerment from the Young Lords Party in the 1960's to today's struggle for a Latino mayor of Nueva York. This monograph by Micky Melendez is a powerful weapon in Boricua's long walk to freedom. palante

    Book Description

For many in Miami's Cuban exile community, hating Fidel Castro is as natural as loving one's children. This hatred, Miguel De La Torre suggests, has in fact taken on religious significance. In La Lucha for Cuba, De La Torre shows how Exilic Cubans, a once marginalized group, have risen to power and privilege--distinguishing themselves from other Hispanic communities in the United States--and how religion has figured in their ascension. Through the lens of religion and culture, his work also unmasks and explores intra-Hispanic structures of oppression operating among Cubans in Miami.
Miami Cubans use a religious expression, la lucha, or "the struggle," to justify the power and privilege they have achieved. Within the context of la lucha, De La Torre explores the religious dichotomy created between the "children of light" (Exilic Cubans) and the "children of darkness" (Resident Cubans). Examining the recent saga of the Elián González custody battle, he shows how the cultural construction of la lucha has become a distinctly Miami-style spirituality that makes el exilio (exile) the basis for religious reflection, understanding, and practice--and that conflates political mobilization with spiritual meaning in an ongoing confrontation with evil.

        Book Description

Post-Revolutionary Mexico in the 1920s developed a vital tradition of mural art that became a vehicle for education and political expression. In the United States, New Deal arts programs provided for the painting of murals in public buildings, but interest in the art form faded during World War II and after. With the emergence of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, Hispanic artists turned to murals as part of their heritage and began producing works, especially in cities of California and Texas. El Paso is one of those cities, with more than 100 murals having been documented by the early 1990s. Miguel Juarez, a cultural arts historian, who had been involved in arts projects for some years, interviewed the major artists of El Paso murals, some of them long-time professional painters such as Manuel Acosta and Mago Gandara, and others commanding groups of volunteers. Many of artists were elementary and high school students. Photographer Cynthia Farah, who took part in some of the interviews, chronicled the murals beginning in 1979; some that she photographed are now gone. Their collection of interviews and art works serves as a tribute to this particularly Hispanic artistic development of the El Paso border region.

                  2 out of 5 stars Falls Short.......2001-11-20

Debbie MacComber's short story was lacking compared to the rest of the Midnight Son's series. It was nice to hear what happened to the rest of our favorite characters from the other books (in fact it was more interesting than the Scott/Chrissie main plot). I didn't buy Scott's "troubled teenager" character at all because of who MacComber painted him to be in the earlier books. Scott would have talked things out with his family instead of internalizing and running away.

The other two stories were good reads especially Promise Me Picket Fences but I felt that the stories moved too quickly and didn't develop characters. For example, I would have liked to learn more about Angie and about Hannah's sister Emily (who sounds more interesting than Hannah herself).

5 out of 5 stars "Born in Small Town" by Debbie Macomber.......2001-07-14

I loved this book as most of Debbie Macomber's are high on my reading list. It had a very good story line. You won't want to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story by Janice Kay Johnson.......2001-02-25

I have reread Janice Kay Johnson's story Promise Me Picket Fences over and over again. It is worth the price of this collection. The other two stories have major problems as far as I'm concerned. But Picket Fences was complete with a too-die-for hero and an endearing heroine. I enjoyed the story as well as the romance. Buy Born in a Small Town today! Janice Kay Johnson's story is lovely and makes it all worthwhile.

                  3 out of 5 stars 3 books in 1.......2000-10-25

I asked for this book for my birtday, because I had read the previous six books over the summer that proceeded the first story in this book. This story was a good follow up to those books. A quick read. I enjoy Debbie Macomber, and that is the only reason I got this book. I couldn't get "into" the other two stories, however, and moved on to better books!

5 out of 5 stars Janice Johnson's Story Is Definitely Best of Collection.......2000-10-23

Debbie MacOmber's story was fine but not great. Basically, it was just an excuse to meet up with all those people from her previous books. Judith Bowen's story was also entertaining, although I disliked the theme of a heroine who disguised her appearance, then having a hero who fell for the disguise and couldn't figure out who she really was. But Janice Johnson's story definitely made up for the rest of the anthology. Her story sparkled with humor and romance. It's a must-read for all romance fans!!!

                            5 out of 5 stars Awesome Devotional.......2006-04-16

This is the best devotional I've ever seen! I have shared these daily devotions with friends and family who have all been touched by things that were said. Each one of them has asked me for the name of this book so that they could buy it. If you purchase this book you will be touched.

5 out of 5 stars Daily Answers to What Would Jesus Do?.......1999-12-12

This is without doubt the best daily devotional book I have ever used. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for meaningful, thought-provoking, insighful, and challenging devotionals. The book should be appropriate for a wide range of age levels. We received one as a Christmas gift last year and I am ordering four for gifts to give this year.

                            5 out of 5 stars Inspiring Devotional.......1999-09-20

I purchased the book for my 8 year old daughter because I wanted to help her with today's challenges in society. She and I sat down and read the first 15 days of January and she was filled with wonderment! Although we are supposed to only read one day at a time, the flowing quality of the quotes with Scripture and synopsis were easily followed by child and adult alike! Recommended for anyone trying to deal with the madness in today's society and searching for the right answers!

5 out of 5 stars This book could positively change your life (pun intended)........1998-09-29

This book of daily devotionals is outstanding. Nick Harrison takes a scripture reading, adds a fitting quotation, and then sums up in a reflection. When I received my copy, I intended to start with that day's devotional and then continue daily as the year progressed. However, I was unable to keep from looking at some of the other entries. They are marvelous - easy and interesting to read, but challenging to put into practice. The quotations have obviously been carefully selected and a section in the back of the book lists the authors and tells us something about them. I would not hesitate to give this book to anyone who wishes to expand his or her spiritual life.
