A Palestinian writer's anguished vision . . ........2006-12-16
Written and published in the 1950s and 1960s, this slender volume of stories by Ghassan Kananfani speaks of the displacement of Palestinians in ways that are timeless and still fresh today. They speak of loss more than hope, and although the author was an activist and spokesman for the Palestinian Popular Front, he seemed in these writings to simply bring attention to the human cost of political struggle in the Middle East. He himself was killed by a car bomb in Beirut in 1972.
The most compelling of these stories is the novella "Men in the Sun," which tells of the efforts of three men being smuggled into Kuwait from Iraq and the truck driver who has offered to help them across the border. The fierce desert heat represents the terrible odds against their ever being able to escape the consequences of war and loss of homeland. But this is only one theme among many, as Kananfani explores traits of Arab character which seem to intensify inner conflict and erode the ability to act purposefully. The story "If You Were a Horse" concerns itself with superstition, fear, and overwhelming regret that divides father from son and leads to misfortune. The book includes an informative introduction by Hilary Kilpatrick.
Book discribing reality.......2006-11-06
This book gives you an idea of the suffering and neglection of a nation, on the watch of the whole civilized world.
Powerful stories.......2006-06-24
This collection of short stories is a brief, but poignant look into the life of people living in Palestine. At the same time, the stark writing illustrates many universal themes forcing readers to reevaluate life as they know it. The writing is plain and easy to read, but ultimately, deep and impossible to dismiss.
Stunning.......2005-12-10
The stories were great. Well written, poignant, the most so being the one involving the tank.
The tragedy questions.......2005-04-12
"Men in the sun", a novel by Ghassan Kanafani, is one of the most breathtaking realities that the Palestinian people lived in the modern history we know. "Men in the sun" is neither a story about Yasser Arafat`s legacy and his PLO's sense of politics nor a debate on Oslo or Madrid agreement. The novel is a piece of art that visualized the Palestinian tragedy from an aspect of extreme reality that has been forgotten or marginalized at any time and place frames.
It is the story of three men's quest for a better life. They plan to migrate from the occupation cage to a new "promise land" where they meet the promised demise in the desert, the home of the original Arabs and Bedouin.
The dream of the three Men is the dream of every man who loses the feeling of being at home at some time. The work to achieve that dream requires a struggle with harsh acquired values of life. The result is not guaranteed.
Struggle, suffer, dreams, hope, fatigue, thirst, and death will form an amalgam that would describe the Palestinian identity which has been evolving during the last decades.
I wanted to write more about the details but you would like to read it yourself. The symbolism in this story is just intriguing. In fact, the trends can symbolize the migration of any man to any "self-imposed exile", where "enforced dreams" replace the simple -but lost- passion, love and happiness to form a complex and bitter reality.
The novel ends with a beautiful and so influential paragraph that tries to raise the question of why the 3 men (main figures of the novel) did not try to knock on the walls of their symbolic "prison" (Empty tanker) or at least shout to ask for help.
"Why? Why? Why?", The "Why" of Kanafani while concluding is: why did not some of the oppressed people reject the abject reality? Why did not they fight for their life and freedom? Could it be that they were so hopeless and tired, or were they so afraid from going back to the occupied home? Did they prefer death to losing their dream?. The questions were asked by Kanafani in the past to project on present exprience and to reflect the suffer of the palestinean-age on the future memory.

The Trouble with Angels.......2007-09-23
The Trouble with Angels (Harper Monogram)another gripping angel book. Debbie Macomber worked her magic & came up with a finish that the reader didn't expect. Wonderful ending!
I Just Couldn't Get Into This Book.......2006-03-27
I didn't like the way she skipped around in the next chapter.
Perfect Christmas Present to Readers.......2002-12-30
Debbie MacOmber offers up a tantalizing array of stories for her readers in this anthology featuring Shirley, Goodness and Mercy--three angels who are apt to get into trouble whenever they visit earth.
From the tale of a Jewish girl who desperately wants a different life but is afraid to go against tradition, to a spunky inner city school teacher, to a rising star, this book has something for everyone.
Each angel has a woman to help. Each woman has her own unique story and problems. And each romance has a happy ending.
I highly recommend this book and would offer the rare comment that five stars isn't nearly enough to describe the heartwarming delight I felt upon finishing the last line in each of the three stories.
I tip my hat to Miss MacOmber for her talented storytelling capabilities and ability to involve my emotions until I laughed and cried.
Wonderful sequal to A Season of Angels.......2001-11-10
This is another adventure of these lovely angels
Shirley, Goodness and Mercy. It is a must read for all
angel lovers. They warm your heart and make you want
to read more. I wish that there was a movie based on
this series.
Delightfully heart warming!!.......2000-12-09
This is the perfect book for the holiday season. It is heart warming and so much fun. Three angels are sent on different assignments to help bring back the spirit of Christmas and add a little bit of "guidance" of their own to some much-needed families and individuals. It involves a bitter divorced woman and her 12 year-old daughter, a young man about to marry someone that just might not be the one, and a sad church minister still grieving the death of his beloved wife from three years ago who has lost all his religious faith. I highly recommend this book to anyone ready for a good Christmas novel to help get you back in the holiday spirit.

A Wonderful Book.......2006-06-07
I have had a paperback copy of this book since I was a child, and it is now pretty dog-eared from being read so many times with much laughter. It was originally called, 'Life With Mother Superior,' and is a true story of Jane Trahey(1923-2000)and her High School years at 'St. Marks'(actually Providence Academy in IL). Rollicking, hysterically funny, and so, so nostalgic for we pre-Vatican 2 Catholic types. It was such a good book that a movie was made in 1966 with Hayley Mills and Ros Russell, called 'The Trouble With Angels,' and a sequel, 'Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows.' Trahey, after her graduation from Providence Academy and Mundelein College, was a famous advertising executive in New York, withb her own agency. She died of cancer in 2000. This book is special, and its humour is ageless.
A fantastic hilarious story about girls and friendship.......2006-01-07
I read this story when it was first published in the sixties...and read and reread it in hysterics. The two girl heroines meet and instantly falll together over a hatred for conformity and a love of mischief. But as time goes on, they go their separate ways. It also gives an unsentimental view of the pre-Vatican II Catholic church, for good and for bad.
As advised above, it is the basis for the Rosalind Russell/Hayley Mills movie, "The Trouble with Angels" -- but as usual the book is far better than the movie.
As I recall, the author Jane Trahey grew up to be a prominent advertising executive. You can tell that it was the relationship detailed in this book that helped stoke her creativity. Why is this book no longer in print? It's a classic.
The book that started it all..........2005-12-22
This fabulous novel came to life on film with Rosalind Russell as Mother Superior and Haley Mills playing Mary Clancy. If you find a copy of this wonderful book, hang on to it!
If you enjoyed the movie, see the film! It was delightful!
The basic plot:
Two young girls meet on a bus to a Catholic School; St. Francis. Mischeif and mayhem follow after the two girls become friends.

This second volume in David Brin's new Uplift trilogy is an epic tale that artfully combines dozens of unique characters and their individual stories. The planet Jijo, which has been settled by six separate races despite a decree that it remain barren for a million years, is about to change. The exploration ship Streaker, on the run since discovering the secrets of a two-billion-year-old derelict fleet, has arrived with virtually the entire universe in pursuit. Overnight the peaceful, technologically backwards Jijoan society erupts into civil war, creating a chaotic tapestry of grief, sorrow, joy, love and, ultimately, hope.
Book Description
Nebula and Hugo award-winning author David Brin continues his bestselling Uplift series in this second novel of a bold new trilogy. Imaginative, inventive, and filled with Brin's trademark mix of adventure, passion, and wit, Infinity's Shore carries us further than ever before into the heart of the most beloved and extraordinary science fiction sagas ever written.
For the fugitive settlers of Jijo, it is truly the beginning of the end. As starships fill the skies, the threat of genocide hangs over the planet that once peacefully sheltered six bands of sapient beings. Now the human settlers of Jijo and their alien neighbors must make heroic--and terrifying--choices. A scientist must rally believers for a cause he never shared. And four youngsters find that what started as a simple adventure--imitating exploits in Earthling books by Verne and Twain--leads them to the dark abyss of mystery. Meanwhile, the Streaker, with her fugitive dolphin crew, arrives at last on Jijo in a desperate search for refuge. Yet what the crew finds instead is a secret hidden since the galaxies first spawned intelligence--a secret that could mean salvation for the planet and its inhabitants...or their ultimate annihilation.

Not Good for Serious Study.......2006-04-24
Although I appreciate the candor in the Authors Note that they are Christians and they were not going to try to hide that, they also put that we do not want to read another one-sided, intolerant, discriminatory tirade against other faiths. With that said, they bagin each chapter with a Bible Scripture in the attempt to discredit the faith you are about to read. I have to agree with another reviewer who said they tried to be funny but it really just came off as judgemental and insulting.
I had to laugh out loud in the section on Hinduism. The questions for review in the back I found to be the most insulting because they were a clear ploy to push their own agenda. Page 168, question number 6. It said, Is reincarnation defensible from a rational standpoint? My answer to that was,"Is Mary giving birth to Jesus as a Virgin rational?"
My guess is that these particular Christians have never read, The Gnostic Gospels, Nag Hammadi, The Gospel of Mary Magdeline, The Unknown Life of Jesus (Issa,) or the lost book of John which is the same guy in the Bible, only the story is a lot different with that missing link. He states the name of the God of the Bible and guess what...It is not the Supreme God. You cannot accept a mans testimony in one book because it made it into the Bible and then ignore the full gospel of his writings when it is found later in a desert with other gospels from that time period. I would gather they also never read Holy Blood Holy Grail. I recommend anyone who is intersted in researching religion to do so with an open mind and study them all before making your conclusion.
This book is very biased and although it has some good information, it is hard to find it through all the sarcasm and insults. I have to agree with the other reviewer when he said the cover says it all. The Narrow Road Leads to Christianity? Whatever! You've got to hand it to the Publishers though. They new this book would cause some outrage and that is what sends the books flying off the shelves. As an Author myself, who has studied and continues to study world religions, this biased and sometimes ignorant book has given me another chapter to write on. Thank you for that.
If you can look past the bias..........2005-10-21
It's a pretty good book. Gave me the information I was looking for but it's significantly biased toward Christianity. At the very beginning, they say they want to present an "objective" view of all the religions, then immediately after, they say Christianity is the only religion that is completely true. And how do we know this? Well, because God said so, of course! It's right there in the Bible!! Then they go on to discuss the other religions and at the end of each, they compare them to Christianity and to each other (which is good), but then they say "here are all the reasons why this religion is wrong."
one of the few..........2005-10-05
B&S outlines ive been able to read through. also read their, 'guide to bible prophecy' their masterpiece that's sadly out of publication.
Too biased for my taste........2005-08-22
After reading this book and then looking at the image on the cover I realized I should have known this was a biased book on world religions. Hmm...where does the road lead? Right to Christianity. Perhaps it is my fault this book did not live up to my expectations.
With that said, here are my reasons for not liking this book. First of all, the authors tried to bring humor to this book but the humor came off as more insulting to the other religions than funny. Also, I did not like that towards the end of most chapters on religions other than Christianity the authors felt they needed to thrown in a few arguments on why this reglion was not as good as their faith. The first chapter of the book is on Christianity, I really didn't need a recap after each chapter after that. Lastly, the last chapter of the book is on how to practice your religion (if you are a Christian, that is).
I really was just looking for an open-minded book with good information on the many religions found in our world. While this book did break those religions down I also felt they were talking down about them.
If you are looking for a really informative and unbiased book on world religions I recommend The World's Religions by Huston Smith. Smith gives very detailed accounts on religions and is very good about leaving his personal beliefs out of the text. In fact, I ended up reading both of these books together. First, I read a chapter (with gritted teeth) of the Bickel & Jantz book and followed it with a corresponding chapter of Smith's book.
