Rosa Parks.......2007-02-01
This is a wonderful book for children. It teaches them about segregation, and about being brave and standing up for your ideas.
Great story...Too bad it was true.
a book that captures the history of the civil rights era.......2006-10-29
This book was well received by our 6 yr old granddaughter. It is a book that can be read with a youngster. It captures the spirit of Rosa Parks in easily understood language.
Rosa Parks.......2003-05-06
This book is a great read for a young child...maybe K-2nd grade. It was good at laying out for the reader the life of Rosa Parks.
Next to Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks is remembered!.......2002-08-03
Rosa Parks is best remembered as the Black woman who refused to give up her seat on a bus to a White person. However, she was much more that that. She was raised by grandparents because her mother taught school in another city. Her grandfather was the child of a slave owner and a slave. Rosa was determined to make a difference for her people. She and her husband took part in supporting the Scottsboro boys, Black youth who were accused of crimes they did not commit. Rosa became secretary of the NAACP and contributed greatly to her people, eventually receiving the Congressional Gold Metal award.
I AM ROSA PARKS.......2000-03-27
This book is about a girl that had to give her seat up in a bus for a white person. She did not get up so they called the police. The police arrested her for not getting up.Then when Rosa got out of jail she made a statement saying, " Why do black people have to give up for white people?" They compromised and the black people do not have to give up there seat anymore. I liked this story because if Rosa Parks did not say anything we will be still separated from black people.

Book Description
"Potok writes powerfully about the suffering of innocent people caught in the cross-fire of a war they cannot begin to understand....Humanity and compassion for his characters leap from every page."
SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
As the Chinese and the army of the North sweep south during the Korean War, an old peasant farmer and his wife flee their village across the bleak, bombed-out landscape. They soon come upon a boy in a ditch who is wounded and unconscious. Stirred by possessiveness and caring the woman refuses to leave the boy behind. The man thinks she is crazy to nurse this boy, to risk their lives for some dying stranger. Angry and bewildered, he waits for the boy to die. And when the boy does not die, the old man begins to believe that the boy possesss a magic upon which all their lives depend....
Customer Reviews:
Good, but not potok's best.......2006-07-19
'I am the Clay' is a refreshing change to Potok's readers from an intimate view of Jewish family life to an intimate portrayal of innocent people caught in war.
Set in South Korea during the Korean war of the mid 1950's, I am the Clay is centered around the journey of two elderly South Korean peasants as they struggle to save a young orphaned boy they found in a ditch, and travel north (a poor choice during the war).
The book, as with most of Chaim Potok's, is very well-written and detailed.
However, I am the Clay lacks the intimacy od Potok's other celebrated works due to the fact that Potok, despite having served for two years as a Chaplain in South Korea and Japan, is largely ignorant about Korean culture. I am the Clay has two peasants who believe animals to be spirits, and a little boy to be a magical charm. Although the characters are intended to be simple-minded, it is not a part of Korean culture to believe animals to be spirits, and human beings are not regarded as lucky charms.
for this, I am the clay is certianly one of Chaim Potok's less imporessive novels. However, he does deserve three stars for experimenting with themes outside of Orthodox Judaism.
Bland, Stereotypical, Inaccurate.......2006-06-13
I am amazed at how Chaim Potok wrote this book, especially since he served as a Chaplain in the Korean war. He should learn more about Asian culture before he makes a direct comment on it. For example, he said that the Japanese do not use the Chinese characters, when, in fact, they do. Isn't that a surprise?
Potok needs to get over his obsession with the human phallus in this book. He talks about it in the most annoyingly random places you could ever imagine. It often has no relevance whatsoever to do with the book.
I think he also does not give enough credit to Koreans in terms of common knowledge. A great example of this is when the main characters think that bats are mouse-shaped spirits that fly.
The storyline of the book is of the utmost simplicity, and as the first reviewer of this book said, it is often easy to feel as though Chaim Potok had not enough to say and decided to "stretch things out" a bit.
Oh, and on the back of the book, it says that the people are heading north in the Korean war. They turn back north at one point, but the Chinese came and invaded south. Why on earth would anyone ever want to run north during the war?
Very Disappointing...........2006-06-02
I am an avid reader and liked/loved every book I ever read by Chaim Potok well until now. Sorry to say that this book was dragging and there were so many repetitions throughout the book that it got underneath my skin. It's one thing to write in detail (which I do enjoy) and it's another to make the reader feel like the writer has nothing to say therefore "lets stretch this out".
This was one of the very few books that I could not even finnish reading. I read about 3/4 of it and I had to put it down.
The story line was interesting and the book would've been enjoyable only if.....
not chaim's greatest work.......2005-11-29
this is definitely not one of Chaim's greater works of art. If you are expecting the type of work you got in "The Chosen" then you will be dissappointed. The plot is very slow developing and is not very interesting, it seems that nothing of importance happened in the novel from beginning to end, and you dont establish a connection with any of the characters like you did in his previous works. This book is not worth reading unless you are a fan of Chaim Potok.
Have Thine Own Way Lord.......2005-10-19
The title "I am the Clay" is taken from a Christian hymn that eventually serves as a theme throughout the progress of the novel. This short novel, reminiscent of a fable, focuses on the lives of three characters as they intersect and conflict during the Korean War. More famously known for his works in regards to Judaism, it is unique to have Potok's perspective on another culture; but unsurprisingly his writing is still shaped by tradition and the influence of the generations who came before.
"I am the Clay" is the story of an old man and woman in flight from their village which is under attack. Along the way, they discover an unconscious and wounded eleven-year-old boy in a ditch along the road. The old couple, childless, is at odds as to what to do. The old man wants to leave the boy - why waste their energy and food on someone who is a stranger to them? But the woman wants to take the boy with them, and her stubborness wins out. Then follows the long trek these three refugees make through the south from shanty town to refugee camp, and finally back to their village when the war ends.
Potok's book is a quick read, filled with a lyrical writing style that brings his vivid descriptions to life before the readers' eyes. At times the narrative can be confusing, since Potok interweaves all three perspectives with little indication between the shifts in narration. The suffering and ultimate redemption that these three characters face is powerfully told and universal in nature as destiny unfolds around them.

Book Description
When I was a little girl, no one told me about God. No one told me that God loved me. No one told me anything of the Lord, faith or belief. Looking back now I realize how much I wish they had. This is my story, the story of my personal journey with God. I came to a point in my life that I just could not go on with things the way they were. Perhaps you have wanted to know God more closely. I hope that in some small way, a poem, story, thought or prayer of mine blesses you. I pray that some part of my journey ministers to your soul.

Book Description
The first in a series called 2176: five books with tough, kick-butt heroines who help restore democracy to the world and find true love along the way.
Book One: THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE. After US Air Force pilot Bree "Banzai" Maguire is shot down in Korean airspace, she awakens in the year 2176 to a romantic adventure everyone will love.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
This is a definite Buck Rogers riff, except that in this case Buck is Bree, or Banzai, if you prefer.
A military pilot of the USA variety gets into trouble with the rest of a patrol, and a few happenings later ends up in suspended animation and wakes up in 2176.
Then you have the Han empire and the UCE - e.g. the yanks or Buck's side, if you prefer.
She has to choose between the suave Han overlord and the somewhat scruffier UCE rebel. No prizes for guessing which, in this case.
Not too bad, but Buck and Wilma in this one are a fair bit less martial than in the original.
Wonderful book.......2007-08-14
This was a neat book. Refreshingly different.
Banzaii's jet gets shot down and she's put in cold freeze for...170 years.
Now the year is 2176 (you knew that) and she is rescued by Ty
This book deals with the fight for freedom and I enjoyed it. Kinda brings back memories of historical times.
Nonstop fun thrill ride.......2006-10-25
The Legend of Banzai Maguire by Susan Grant was a nonstop fun thrill ride.
Bree "Banzai" Maguire is an Air Force pilot whose plane, while flying over North Korea, gets shot down. From there, the action and adventure doesn't stop. Banzai gets captured and wakes up 170 years in the future. This earth of the future has two major world powers, and neither democratic. These futuristic explanations can sometimes be difficult to understand and rationalize. But Grant gives us a reasonable account that's pretty easy to grasp. Banzai soon realizes that a group of freedom fighters has chosen her as their symbol of hope.
The Legend of Banzai Maguire is considered an action-romance book. Though, it's considerably heavier on the science fiction/action side.
This book is just the first of five in the 2176 miniseries. The first and fifth are written by Susan Grant. Unfortunately, this first book leaves you hanging enough to want to know what happens in their fight for freedom, so I'm off to pick up the next in the series!
ok.......2006-03-14
the story itself was good but there was way too much detail in certain scenes. I found myself skipping pages just to get on with it. The series is great but susan grant lowers it. She just lost my intreast. I would never read any of her books again.
Fighter Pilot Wakes up in the Future and Finds herself in a Dangerous Love Triangle .......2005-12-29
THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE by Susan Grant is the first in a five-book futuristic romance series written by four different authors. The gist of the story is that U.S. air force pilot Bree "Banzai" Maguire is shot down over North Korea, captured, and put into bio-statis. But when she wakes up, she discovers it's 176 years later, and two hunky men - one a prince, the other a treasure hunter - are fighting over possessing her.
I really enjoyed the author's description of the future, as well as her realistic and fascinating tidbits about military life. I also thought the story was engaging and attention-grabbing, especially when the love triangle was thrown in. It was fun reading!
However, a couple things kept me from giving the book 5 stars. For one, the initial set-up (in which Bree and her wingman are shot down and captured) takes 50-plus pages to describe. For another, the "legend" part wasn't clear to me. If the legend was supposed to be about pilots gone missing, then wouldn't the legend be about them both, not just Bree? Also, Bree hadn't done anything before being shot down that merited hero-worship status. Nor did she think to question anyone as to why they were hero worshiping her, which frankly I thought odd. Finally, the ending was too abrupt to satisfy and the epilogue actually detracted me. I'd WANTED to read the next book immediately ... until I read the epilogue. Now I'm not so excited.
Anyway, it's still an interesting book ... but ONLY IF you are prepared to read the rest of the books in the series, because THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE definitely doesn't stand alone as a "happily ever after" romance.
***The "2176 series" includes book #1 THE LEGEND OF BANZAI MAGUIRE by Susan Grant, #2 DAY OF FIRE by Kathleen Nance, #3 THE SHADOW RUNNERS by Liz Maverick, #4 THE POWER OF TWO by Patti O'Shea, and #5 THE SCARLET EMPRESS by Susan Grant.***

"To me, the key to spiritual growth and God-consciousness is understanding that we're not in this world to look for a new belief system," writes Reverend Michael Beckwith, a contributor to this outstanding selection of essays on personal relationships with the divine. "Instead, we are looking for ways to awaken to our real self." Beckwith's wisdom speaks to the core purpose of this superbly edited book. Diverse poetic and inspirational voices, such as Rabbi Harold Kushner, Mother Teresa, Hugh Prather, Brooke Medicine Eagle, and the Dalai Lama create a surprisingly harmonious message--one that sings the praises of finding and worshipping a God in one's self and one's life.
Book Description
One of the most profound needs of our age, when so many violent conflicts are based on perceived religious differences, is to affirm the common ground of organized religion and personal spirituality. In this accessible collection, 25 of the world's foremost spiritual thinkers -- Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, Sue Bender, Matthew Fox, Shakti Gawain, Rabbi Harold Kushner, among others -- describe their concepts of spirituality and universal wisdom.
Customer Reviews:
Handbook for the Soul by Carlson.......2004-05-14
The author speaks of the all-important need to attend to the needs of our soul and spiritual side. The Greek word "Kairos"
depicts a person so absorbed in activity or contemplation that
he/she loses a concept of time. Dr.Bernie Siegel MD urges us to find the true path. Dass urges us to have personal awareness of ourselves, the soul and incarnation afterward.Meditation and
self-reflection are important personal activities leading to
self-actualization. The author criticizes society because it does not encourage us to explore the spiritual side. He explores the long journey taken by the soul into an endless eternity.
In addition, the author describes the continuum of the earth and its extension into Divinity. Ultimately, the book points toward
ordinary people doing extraordinary things. The book is well worth reading for an exploration on the spiritual side of life.
Much of what we do in our daily lives tends toward the analytical
and we rarely explore the intuitive/spiritual side of our
existence.
Out of the Abyss.......2000-07-06
This book was the key I had been looking for in reaching a mid-40's spiritual plateau. It is a book of answers and methods. From things as simple as focussing on the thoughts "In" and "Out" while breathing during meditation to the conflict between egoism and spiritualism. It is the kind of book one will keep on hand in times of crises to read over again. The format of brief 4-5 page essays is perfect for those with short attention spans.
Wonderful and spiritually uplifting book.......1998-02-13
I loved "For the Love of God" and, as the title claims, it is a "handbook for the Spirit". The essays range from Mother Teresa to the Dalai Lama, so as credentials go, it doesn't get better. This book works on the level of poetry - food for the soul. The only comparable book I can think of that achieves this same level of impact, is the divine and truly inspired "The Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. The accumulated wisdom that is in "For the Love of God" becomes manifest in the profoundly moving "The Autobiography.." and for the first time I can believe Jesus as being a REAL human being. Either I am getting older or the authors of today are getting better at portaying our aspirations towards God. - I hope it's just them getting better. This is an excellent book, go for it!
