Edith Hope (a.k.a. romance author Veronica Wilde) has been banished by her friends to a stately hotel in Switzerland. During her stay she befriends some of the other guests, each of whom has his or her own tale. Edith struggles to come to terms with her career and love--the lack, the benefits, and the meaning thereof.
Book Description
In the novel that won her the Booker Prize and established her international reputation, Anita Brookner finds a new vocabulary for framing the eternal question "Why love?" It tells the story of Edith Hope, who writes romance novels under a psudonym. When her life begins to resemble the plots of her own novels, however, Edith flees to Switzerland, where the quiet luxury of the Hotel du Lac promises to resore her to her senses.
But instead of peace and rest, Edith finds herself sequestered at the hotel with an assortment of love's casualties and exiles. She also attracts the attention of a worldly man determined to release her unused capacity for mischief and pleasure. Beautifully observed, witheringly funny,
Hotel du Lac is Brookner at her most stylish and potently subversive.
Customer Reviews:
For all swissophiles.......2007-06-20
It took me forever to get into "Hotel du Lac." I love Jane Austen and I love Anne Tyler and this books sorta straddles both and was recommended to me by a used bookstore owner who said his wife liked it.
Finally after several chapters I got hooked and I read it slowly enough to relish it. I lived in Geneva and Basle so I could understand the place and was fascinated to read her version of Lake Geneva. The book slowly unfolds and has the unexpected twists you get in mysteries and at the end you are still puzzling - it isn't so neat in fact like a good movie it makes you want to go out and discuss it with others. The reviews here make me think the people who are reading it prefer action novels and would be the last people I'd like to discuss this book with.
But I really loved it. I'm only sorry every one says it's her best as I'd like to read others by her and not be disappointed.
Boring, more boring, most boring.......2007-03-28
This is the most painfully boring book I have ever read. I grant that it is well written but it makes my teeth ache, it is so boring. I cannot believe the praise plus the Booker prize, but trust me, it is beyond any interest that anybody could have.
a gray work, well crafted.......2007-03-27
This well polished short novel is a fine diversion, easily read. It focuses on a set of society's lonely misfits who come together in a respectible, albeit slighly unfashionable, Swiss resort hotel. The author pays due homage to Virginia Woolf in many ways: in particular she takes a view of the way women carry themselves in the world that is neither traditionally feminist nor boilerplate traditionalist--it is a fresh view that transcends Woolf, and it was for this that I most enjoyed the book. The ending provided a satisfying piu mosso to this piece, which on the whole must be described as adagio moroso, although punctuated throughout with a subtle wit and humor.
Flawless .......2007-03-16
Anita Brookner offers up a deft and moving work in her lyrical tale of loneliness, love, and human interaction. Edith Hope, a writer of romance novels, has been banished to an isolated hotel in Switzerland for reasons which are at first unclear. The slow unfolding of her story and the reasons behind her banishment kept me mesmerized, as Brookner weaves a delicately intoxicating spell in Edith's interactions with the often bizarre hotel guests, including the wealthy and selfish Mrs. Pusey and her over-shadowed daughter, Jennifer, whose brilliant vibrance at once attract and repels Edith. She also finds herself courted by the equally wealthy, charming, and unscrupulous Mr. Neville, who understands her and yet would use her to his advantage. In long walks, dilatory conversations, and her meetings with and reboundings on these people, Edith is revealed more and more to be a woman of incredible depth and intensity, facing a turning point in her life, and her story, told in Brookner's clear prose and spiced with subtle irony, humor, and tragedy, is like sinking luxuriously into cool water. A quietly vivid, modern masterpiece, and not to be missed.
Brookner's five-star 'Hotel.'.......2007-01-31
1984 Booker Prize winner, HOTEL DU LAC, tells the story of Edith Hope (a.k.a. romantic novelist Veronica Wilde), who has been banished by her friend Penelope to the Hotel du Lac, a "quiet hotel" on the shores of Lake Geneva, following an incident involving a disappointment in love. (As later revealed, Edith's only transgression was being true to herself.) During her stay, and while contemplating with the meaning of love, Edith takes long walks and befriends some of the other guests, including Mrs. Pusey and her daughter, Jennifer. When an attractive middle-aged guest, Mr Neville, proposes a loveless marriage to Edith, she is forced to weigh her lonely independence against a loveless future with an incorrigible womanizer. Will Edith "settle down now" without having "anything more to look forward to," or will she again remain true to herself? Her decision will leave readers hooked on Brookner. While other characters frequently note Edith's physical resemblance to Virginia Woolf, Brookner's narrative style (conveyed through her protagonist's thoughts, letters, and conversations) resembles Woolf's own elegant prose, but with the subtle emotional restraint of Jane Austen. HOTEL DU LAC, like Austen's novels, is a poignant comedy comedy of manners.

the captives return.......2006-07-26
Good follow up in the series, but also an excellent stand alone
Wingmen Warriors Soars again.......2005-10-17
Lt. Colonel Lucas Quade is still haunted by the memories of his late wife. Five years ago he had to flee a war torn country and leaving his wife's body behind haunts him. Now he is on a mission to rescue a woman who resembles Sara.
Sarafina Quade had been kept secluded for five years. She was told Lucas and her younger brother were killed fleeing the country. Sara would risk it all to escape and to protect her and Lucas's child.
Both Sara and Lucas are in for the shock of their lifes. Lucas meets his child and Sara comes face to face with a very alive Lucas. But before they can celebrate and go forward they must escape through the jungle.
The Captive's Return is another compelling Wingmen Warrior tale. Lucas and Sara both are strong and passionate characters. Their child adds a deeply touching dimension to this wonderful story.
Another Awesome Edition to the Wingman Warrior's Series!.......2005-09-30
Lieutenant Colonel Lucas Quade's wife died 5 years ago just minutes after they said their vows when rebels attempted to take over her South American country. In order to save her brother from death, Lucas was forced to flee and leave her body behind. Now he's discovered that Sarafina's death was faked. For the past 5 years she's been held hostage by a family friend who believed he was protecting her for her own good. If the shock that Sarafina was alive isn't enough, Lucas also discovers that she had his child. Now he has to rescue Sarafina and his daughter and get them out of the jungle alive, all the while trying to come to terms with issues in the past that he and Sarafina never had time to deal with. If they survive the journey, can their marriage also survive?
I have read every book in the Wingman Warrior's series and throughly enjoyed them. The Captive's Return is no exception. Lucas and Sarafina are a couple that you will want to see
reunited and to be a family together. Catherine Mann also gives us a hint of an upcoming story for Hunt that I am dying to read. Ms. Mann skillfully brings past Wingman Warrior couples into the story, giving us a glimpse of their life that is more than welcome. All in all readers of the Wingman Warrior series will not be disappointed by this newest addition. After reading the Captive's Return, readers who have not had the privilege of reading this series will find themselves rushing out to get the rest of the series. I will be waiting impatiently for Catherine Mann's next installment!

Book Description
Introduction by Ambassador Monteagle Stearns. Taken hostage by Congolese rebels at the U.S. Consulate he headed in Stanleyville, Michael Hoyt provides the first inside account of the 1964 seizure of the American consulate staff and their one hundred and eleven days of captivity. Their survival and eventual rescue offer a gripping story of courage and frustration, survival and sadness of lives lost. The first time that American diplomats have been held hostage since the Barbary pirate days of the 1800s, these events, as described by the author, present valuable lessons both for the future conduct of hostages and the policies to deal with their taking.
The book chronicles their day-by-day ordeal as communist-backed rebels held them in confinement at the central prison in Stanleyville and elsewhere, including even the women's toilet at the airport terminal. Throughout the period they lived in terror, several times being led to what they believed was their execution and somehow surviving a final desperate attempt by the rebels to gun them down when Belgian paratroopers, flown in by American C-130s, arrived to rescue them. While helping readers appreciate the intensity of the drama as it unfolded, Hoyt is remarkably objective in his account. His description of the final moments of sheer terror before they were saved is unforgettable. Presented in cooperation with the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training.

Memoirs from new head of the American Consulate in the Congo in Volatile 1964.......2007-03-03
The then new head of the American Consulate in the Congo writes his well- documented and dignified personal recollection of consulate staff being imprisoned, beaten, threatened by cannibals, hopping to escape the knives being hurled at their feet and sentanced to death almost weekly in the uprisings of 1964. One day they would be locked in a filthy, tiny womens bathroom, crowded, trying to sleep upright to the sound of shooting outside. One day they were dignitaries transported to a luxury hotel, then the next day they were hostages sleeping on boards in prison. All depended on relations and sympathies of whoever held the moment's power. Chaos reigns. Diplomatic rights and privilege only work occasionally and the captured are dependant upon whatever help comes from personnel at other consulates, people in various factions they worked with before capture, missionaries, and the saner elements of warring factions. With limited and sporatic communication they have no idea if their superiors are aware of the seriousness of the situation. Their own relentless efforts at negotiation have limited effect.
The first third of this harrowing tale is almost unreadable with military memos, uncertainty about what the political situation was and indecision or technical inability to respond. Hoyt attempts to stay clear headed and analytical amidst every source he talks to relaying often contradictory or seemingly absurd information. When orders were sent for civilians to evacuate many never received the orders and others refused to leave, not realizing how volatile and life-threatening Stanleyville would quickly become.
Interspersed are surreal war images such as a naked, young, dark girl lying on an officer's white sheets or captives being ordered to eat an American flag but not being able to chew it.
Once memos can't be quoted the events become much more readable and engrossing. Footnotes are fascinating with references such as Eartha Kitt calling the rescue of the hostages another example of whites killing blacks.
Aware and unaware of what is transpiring outside the prison/consulate/hotel walls, written from daily notes kept during the revolt. Hoyt documents his account, with reflection and trying to stay scrupulous about differences of opinion or memory.
From a consulate's viewpoint, the book is a careful documentation of political revolt.

The story of Onesimus, the runaway servant.......2005-07-08
This book was a novel about Onesimus, the runaway servant, of the Bible talked about in Philemon. The book was interesting and gave a view of what life during that time might have been and what might have been going through the head of this servant as he worked in the house of Philemon and then ran away once he took money from his master. It is interesting speculation that Onesimus may have been unhappy with his situation and this may have led to the reason for taking the money and running.
I enjoyed reading the book and think that it would be a great story for young and old alike.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
This engaging, deeply personal book, illuminating the search for meaning in today's world, offers a rare insider's look at Soka Gakkai Buddhism, one of Japan's most influential and controversial religious movements, and one that is experiencing explosive growth around the world. Unique for its multiethnic make-up, Gakkai Buddhists can be found in more than 100 countries from Japan to Brazil to the United States and Germany. In Encountering the Dharma, Richard Seager, an American professor of religion trying to come to terms with the death of his wife, travels to Japan in search of the spirit of the Soka Gakkai. This book tells of his journey toward understanding in a compelling narrative woven out of his observations, reflections, and interviews, including several rare one-on-one meetings with Soka Gakkai president Daisaku Ikeda. Along the way, Seager also explores broad-ranging controversies arising from the Soka Gakkai's efforts to rebuild post-war Japan, its struggles with an ancient priesthood, and its motives for propagating Buddhism around the world. One turning point in his understanding comes as Ikeda and the Soka Gakkai strike an authentically Buddhist response to the events of September 11, 2001.
Customer Reviews:
What a Great Book.......2007-07-21
As a member of the SGI, i learned a lot about our organization, from reading this book. This is a really good book to buy you wont regret it. I found it hard to put this book down, one of the best books i have ever read.
excellent time-flow read .......2007-06-05
A very human look at the life and times of Presiden Ikeda and the SGI. I'm an SGI'er but I'm also an American who works and lives in Asia and as such was always ready to try and see the dark side of everything. Is Ikeda evil? Is SGI a cult? Google "Ikeda cult" and he's blamed for everything except kidnapping the Linberg baby. The proof is in the practice. If you chant nam myoho renge kyo you will see a change in your life condition just as sure as if you start to go to a gym and start lifting weights. You will get stronger with each practice. That's the point and I think the book covers that very well. I like the book's "prove-to-me-you're-the-real-deal" approach. I have to honestly say I see President Ikeda in a very positive light as a direct result of this read. Why is President Ikeda slammed so much in Japan? There's a saying over here that is so very not the American way of looking at things in general that goes "the highest nail always get pounded down first." Indeed.
Terrific insider-outsider review.......2007-05-15
I read this book a couple of months ago. Its narrative format is extremely poignant. Apart from describing the workings of Buddhism in our modern day society I loved the parallel narrative of the authors transformation, through encountering this amazing life philosophy. I admired the tenacity with which the author handled the insider-outsider critique and framing of his thoughts. Thanks Mr. Seager for sharing your life and its transformation. As Daisaku Ikeda states "A great inner revolution in just a single individual will help achieve a change in the destiny of an entire society and, further, will cause a change in the destiny of humankind."
Such an apt book at the right time!
A Beautiful Book.......2007-05-13
I loved reading Richard Hughes Seager's book, he has a beautiful writing style, he gives lots of insight into himself as well as the subject matter, in this case Daisaku Ikeda and The Soka Gakkai. I thoroughly recommend this book to anyone. As a Soka Gakkai member I found Seager's work factual, thought provoking and he gave me a glimpse of Soka Gakkai that I haven't yet been able to explore myself, reading his book was like being in Japan with him. In my view this book would satisfy an academic as well as anyone interested in Buddhism and the truth. Read and enjoy!
Encountering the Dharma for sure!.......2006-11-10
As a Soka Gakkai member, after reading this book I was very inspired. It challenged me to look at my practice and feel proud to belong to such an amazing organization. I recommend this book to Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike.
