Book Description

One of the most widely admired writers of our time returns us to the captivating play and narrative allure of his previous novels—G. and To the Wedding among them—with a shimmering fiction drawn from chapters of his own life.

One hot afternoon in Lisbon, our narrator, John, finds his mother, who had died fifteen years earlier, seated on a park bench. “The dead don’t stay where they are buried,” she tells him. And so begins a remarkable odyssey, told in simple yet gorgeous prose and with the openness to personal and political currents that has always marked John Berger’s work.

Having promised his mother that he will henceforth pay close attention to the dead, John takes us to a woman’s bed during the 1943 bombardment of London, to a Polish market where carrier pigeons are sold, to a Paleolithic cave, to the Ritz Hotel in Madrid. Along the way, we meet an English aristocrat who always drives barefoot, a pedophile schoolmaster, a Spanish sculptor who cheats at poker, and Rosa Luxemburg, among other long-gone presences, and John lets us choose to love each of them as much as he still does.

This is a unique literary journey in which a writer’s life and work are inseparable: a fiction but not a conventional novel, a narration in the author’s voice but not a memoir, a portrait that moves freely through time and space but never loses its foothold in the present, a confession that brings with it not regret but a rich deepening of sensual and emotional understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Crying Afterwards..........2007-02-20

In HERE IS WHERE WE MEET, John Berger says: "Desire has been the cause of all my wounds, yet life without wounds isn't worth living. Desire is brief - a few hours or a lifetime, both are brief. Desire is brief because it occurs in defiance of the permanent. It challenges time in a fight to the death."

This wonderful work - whether it is a novel, autobiography, self-eulogy, self-elegy, or just a collection of essays - displays Berger's lifelong facility to deal with the elusiveness of desire. The memories of cities and people and foods are all ghosts of this desire and are beautifully spread out for the reader to enjoy.

This is a book that challenges one not to get inside the tale, not to see with the author's eyes, not to believe in the ghosts of his past. A challenge once unheeded, best taken at full advantage.

At one point the young speaker's mentor says: "If you have to cry, he said, and sometimes you can't help it, if you have to cry, cry afterwards, never during! Remember this. Unless you're with those who love you, only those who love you, and in that case you're already lucky for there are never many who love you--if you're with them, you can cry during. Otherwise you cry afterwards."

This book did not tug on my emotions until after I finished reading.

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and Perceptive.......2005-10-29

John Berger's new "fiction" (to use his term) persuades me to think of the book as perhaps his last; it is a book of retrospection (without rue, yet truthful to loss), inhabited by ghosts and memory. Its view is broad, its format almost playful: a tour of places the speaker has visited, or rather, a return to those places via memory. Although the chapters/essays feature the usual (but thoroughly unique) observations that seem to unite the metaphysical with the concrete, there is a new tonal element here -- a poignancy, a sweet melancholia at times, tinted by fatal shadows. Berger is now eighty. You will think of Berger's novel TO THE WEDDING when you read his eighth chapter of his new book, which occurs in Poland. You will think of his art criticism and other essays when you read his lines on cave paintings in France. Berger has always reminded us that memory and history are frequently at odds -- and that the action of memory (circular, returning) refreshes and excites us, while history (persuading us that life is linear, the present always replaceable) works against the eternal, the simple, and the deep. Berger's writing style -- notable for its sure tonal handling, its economy and modesty, and its narrative and descriptive power -- is here at its best.

5 out of 5 stars J. Berger is as good as ever.......2005-09-20

One of best books written on reminiscence and time.

The book has stayed with me after I have finished reading it. And I am sure it is here to stay with me for long by raising questions and ideas of all sort.

It is simply marvelous.

4 out of 5 stars A summing up of Berger's physical, mental, and emotional voyages.......2005-09-02

"Why did you never read any of my books?"

"I liked books which took me to another life. That's why I read the books I did. Many. Each one was about real life, but not about what was happening to me when I found my bookmark and went on reading. When I read, I lost all sense of time."

Eighty-year-old John Berger has written plenty of literary works, ranging from poetry and essays to screenplays and novels. His "Into Their Labours" trilogy (PIG EARTH, ONCE IN EUROPA, and LILAC AND FLAG) and book WAYS OF SEEING have both received worldwide recognition, and he was awarded the prestigious Booker Prize for his novel, G. Born in England and currently living in a small village in France after countless years of travel, Berger is certainly an international man of letters and this itinerant influence and well-educated lifestyle permeate his work.

In his latest novel, HERE IS WHERE WE MEET, Berger continues to act the part of a hospitable chaperone. In a series of stories and essays that are tenuously linked yet can stand alone as individual musings, Berger guides his readers from one city to the next, from Lisboa and Genève to Islington and Le Pont d'Arc. Through his words, we are able to experience the heat of the African streets, the dark solitude of a French Cro-Magnon underground cave, and the bustling frenzy of a Polish marketplace. In each venue, we are introduced to past and present family members, loves, and complete strangers --- all with interesting stories to tell and all making an impact in their own quiet way.

In the first story, "Lisboa," John (the narrator) stumbles across his mother --- a vision of her, perhaps --- who died fifteen years earlier. Over the course of fifty or so pages, she and he explore the city and talk about living, death, and everything in between. She shares with him, as Berger shares with us, a philosophy on how to appreciate what you have both in life and in death: "Everything in life, John, is a question of drawing a line, and you have to decide for yourself where to draw it. You can't draw it for others. You can try, of course, but it doesn't work. People obeying rules laid down by somebody else is not the same thing as respecting life. And if you want to respect life, you have to draw a line."

In the story entitled "Genève," we travel to the city of the same name --- a city that is "contradictory and enigmatic as a living person...sexy and secretive." Here, in one of John's side anecdotes, we meet the legendary writer Jorge Luis Borges and are privy to his first humiliating boyhood experience with a prostitute. A moment later, we are brought back to the present and treated to a glimpse into John's trip to Genève with his daughter, Katya. During their stay, the two pay a visit to Borges's grave sight and, in doing so, rediscover the writer's curious and passionate native city firsthand.

In these and the rest of the seven offerings included in HERE IS WHERE WE MEET, John bares a close resemblance to Berger in that he is around the same age and shares the same temperament and voice. In his storytelling, he is both unassuming and contemplative, with frequent and somewhat disjointed reflections and observations peppered throughout. Almost as if he is talking into a tape-recorder in order to document his wanderings and create an audible travelogue, John relates his experiences with authority and grace, allowing the reader to enjoy these experiences as he himself would experience them.

Overall, HERE IS WHERE WE MEET is an enjoyable collection for those who are interested in skimming the surface of many locales and time frames, and forming their own opinions about what they encounter. For those who are looking for an in-depth journey or actual story, with solid characters, linear plots and subplots that are firmly grounded in reality, and an all-inclusive message, I would suggest looking elsewhere. It is clear that Berger ("John") has traversed many borders and boundaries in his long life, and it is possible that this latest "Fiction" might just be his way of summing up his physical, mental and emotional voyages for the more neophyte travelers and dedicated readers.

3 out of 5 stars Warning - what follows is a negative review!.......2006-07-07

It seems, in reading the voting totals for reviews, that people do not particularly like to read a negative review. Well, why not? If I had given more credence to the negative reviews on this book, I would have saved myself some money and lots of time. The synopsis of the book has been fully explored by previous reviewers so I can just say why I didn't like this particular novel by Patricia Cabot.

I have read other books by Ms Cabot and thoroughly enjoyed them. I started off liking this one because I thought I knew where it was heading (which is always dangerous because only the author knows where a book is truly going). It did not take me very long to begin to dislike the way Kate had of expressing part of a thought to herself and then, as a tease, going no further and leaving me dangling. If an author reveals too much too soon there is no more mystery, or confusion, or situation which our heroine needs to clear up. If an author does not reveal enough and leaves readers hanging too often, it gets frustrating. I got frustrated.

A really big problelm for me was that I did not like Burke. He was way too violent for me. Not just the suggestion of an ability to becomme violent but actual fighting, hitting, hurting people, breaking things, and killing people (yes, killing). He knew he had a terrible temper and had to keep it under control but Ms. Cabot had him smashing things and people up every time he got the chance.

I also did not like Kate. She supposedly had all these scruples and values yet she jumped into bed with him almost instantly. Yes, she left after their first encounter but she had to....the author made it happen so fast we weren't even to the half-way point in the book! From then on, it was nothing but an excuse to describe violence on his part until he found her and then sex over and over once they were reunited.

Also, a very thin excuse for a mystery. If an author does not have enough material for the main characters to fill a book, why do they throw in a "mystery"? It must be very hard to write something convincing because most "mysteries" incorporated into historical romances are just not very interesting.

Now I've had my say. You may not agree but at least you have been warned.

    5 out of 5 stars TURN UP THE AIR-COND. ! A HYSTERICAL ROMP ! WHAT A HOOT !!!!.......2001-04-16

This book swept me up & had me in stitches up to the sooo-happy ending !!! Grouchy heroes always tug at my heart, but this one scores even higher 'cuz of his Italian temper & reluctant protectiveness towards the love of his life. Not a lot of novels out there feature a spoiled brat to spice up the story. The 1st encounter where Kate almost - and let me quote - 'endangered Burke's hopes of siring an heir' is hilarious & it gets even better since then on. No matter what the other scathing reviews said, I LUUUV this extremely funny, merry, passionate tale of 2 lovable characters fighting their hopeless attraction. It's well-written, fast-paced, overflowing w/ witty banters, dynamite chemistry, crisp plot & sensual love-scenes. In short, it's a page-turner ! This is only Ms. Cabot's 3rd book that I've read (after Lady of Skye & Improper Proposal) but she's on my must-buy list. It'll charm the wits out of ya !!!

    4 out of 5 stars gentlemanly conduct.......2001-04-04

I've read Where Roses Grow Wild, Portrait Of My Heart, and A Little Scandal, and would rate them above average.

However, one thing disturbs me. In all three novels, the heroines end up living in the same house as the hero, who is in a more powerful position. As gentleman, the men in a household are supposed to protect those in the women in their homes, and definitely not take advantage of them (i.e. Regency Buck, by Georgette Heyer).

Yet time and again, the heroes in Patricia Cabot's books take the innocence of the heroines living under their roof, and feel no twinge of conscience, no betrayal of honor.

I don't admire the men that much, they seem to have little honor concerning their "own" womenfolk.

1 out of 5 stars BETTER LUCK WITH NEXT BOOK...........2000-09-03

I also tried to like this book because it sounded cute. I also liked her first book - Where Roses Grow Wild very much. I was hoping for a repeat peformance, but this book falls flat with both the character development and the plot. It was truly uninspiring and boring. I only finished the book because I spent good money on it. I am hoping I like the next book better.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised! A Enjoyable romance........2000-07-19

This was my first Patricia Cobat and I enjoyed it enough to run out and buy the Improper Proposal. I liked the fact that the hero is of a more 'mature' age with a wild daughter. Their relationship was funny through out the book. I like the personality and chemistry between the hero and heroine.

The fact that the hero is getting old and dealing with becoming middle age is also rather refreshing, certainly I have not read that in another novel. Kate was really practical and strong which I enjoy very much in a female lead. Throwing in the Isabel's wild behavior, you have a really nice romance.

The mystery is not really interesting, after all we are not reading for the mystery plot. I have to say I enjoy this book much more than Improper Proposal which I just finished yesterday. The girl (I mean 'girl') in the story was just as wild as the daughter in this story and definitely needed help.

3 out of 5 stars Not believeable for the Superman Universe.......2006-07-21

I was expecting a little more out of this story line after being let down with the Superman vs Aliens series. I don't understand why they have to make Superman like everyone else in the story (human, weak, etc). I mean, this is "Superman" he shouldn't get mysterious diseases, etc. Now what they should do is take a clue from the Batman vs Predator series, which is true to the Batman character and mystique.

                      4 out of 5 stars A Clever Action Romp!.......2005-09-25

"Superman vs. Predator" doesn't quite go in the directions you might expect, but for what it is, it's a lot of fun! This is a story with strengths and weaknesses, but the bottom line is, I enjoyed it!

David Michelinie spent a big portion of his comics-writing career as a regular sribe on Superman for most of the nineties, so his familiarity with that stable of characters is expected. He nails Superman and Lois (right down to her tough-as-nails army brat personality). This was written a few years after Michelinie left the regular Super-books, so the story was really a homecoming for him, and it reads as such. He takes full advantage of the chance to play with the dynamics of the Clark-Lois marriage, and the hero who belongs to the world who is stuck in the middle. He handles the Predator well also, in a way that was consistent with all the movie appearances and the comics.

He breaks little new ground with the Predator concept, but then, he is a Superman writer in a DC-produced crossover. So this is rightly a Superman story with a Predator as guest. And too, as with Walt Simonson's excellent Tarzan-Predator crossover, it's much easier to build the stories around the non-Predator characters because, as cool as they are, the Predators have never been emotionally deep. Superman and Lois, by contrast, are fairly complex, well-defined characters who can carry any story. And Michelinie also builds one of the more eclectic and interesting supporting casts in this story. Many of these characters, I would love to see again (even some of the merc bad guys). And without spoiling much of the story, I have to say that ONLY Superman could end up teaming-up with a Predator to save makind! Very cool, and very much in keeping with Big Blue's nature (while done in a way that didn't abuse the Predator mystique)!

Michelinie does use the plot device of Superman being weakened by an alien bug. Though this is entirely plausible and thoroughly fleshed-out in the story, it remains the story's one big flaw that the virus strikes Superman (and is later cured) so conveniently for dramatic effect.

Alex Maleev turned in effective art. He creates great moods and atmosphere in the story, though I confess I'm not a huge fan of his line-work in general. I did very much enjoy his output here, however. He might have made some better decisions in costuming. The scanty outfit he put on Dr. Rollins strained credibility in an otherwise dramatic story. On the other hand, he deserves extra kudos for the Mayan temples the drew! Great stuff, there!

                      Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Survival is an Option, Failure is NOT........2005-05-31

While it was interesting seeing Superman and the Predator in a comic together, it was also kindof frustrating, because there wasn't anything 'super' about Superman in this comic.

The storyline is very well thought out though. Because if Superman was on Earth, the Predator (I suppose) would DEFINETELY devise a way to deal with him if he were to try to get between them and their prey. In this comic the Predtor is destroying technology not hunting, so it isn't the Hunt that he is on, rather it is a mission to stop scientists from using his technology.

All in all it was a good read for it's uniqueness and it has a few interesting points you learn about the Predator.

2 out of 5 stars Excellent art, terrible story..........2004-02-08

I picked this one up for the art, knowing it would be a lame story, but it truly exceeded my expectations in its terrible writing. What's the point of Superman without his powers? And why bother pitting him against something just because it's popular if you're going to have to strip him down to do it? Leave the alien stories to Batman, who actually has to outwit and out fight them. Also, everything takes place in what must be the highest traffic area of the Amazon ever...I mean, how many plots do you need to fill out this terrible book? This is slapped together garbage, pure and simple. Great artwork for the most part, though. Gave it an extra star just for that.

                      2 out of 5 stars good toilet-reading material.......2003-07-21

some of the worst writing i have seen.predictable and boring.you can tell by the art that even maleev, who's doing very nice work for daredevil now,was totally uninspired by the whole story.i pity him and hope he at least got paid well.
so bring it to the toilet if you run out of paper.

This novel is fairly good with the art being quite realistic rather than the usual comic look. I think Batman was excellent and definately my choice out of the two heroes. I would have liked the Predators to have been more dangerous, but I won't spoil anything. As I said, a good novel!

This book is a nicely rounded compendium of insights into spiritual relationships, healing, energies, and requirements of the disciple in the "worldly" sense. It was the first AAB book I ever bought many years ago, and I have always taken seriously the intent and energies in its words. If your motive in life is "Selfless Service to Others" you will like this book!

Its content helped reaffirm my own inner attitudes to life, and made me examine my world of associates and inter-relations with all manner of events and circumstances due to my own actions. It helped me see the good in all people and states of affairs. It helped me see there is no such thing as blame, and no such thing as bad luck or good luck. We make our futures, just as we made our past.

These attitudes to induce so-called "right human relations" and "goodwill" are central to the furtherance of "brother/sisterhood" as a "fact in nature", rather than as an ideal. In the AAB books is the concept of a "New Group of World Servers". The NGWS function subconsciously as a "group-force" of spiritual aspirants and disciples. This NGWS idea is expounded in detail in this book. Its hard to fault this kind of positive theory and hard to doubt the truth of this concept. I believe it is a feasible idea that the forces of "will to good" contribute substantially on a world-wide basis, and that our conscious effort to be part of this is a worthwhile pursuit. The book is very interesting, and distils many helpful ideas and techniques for the disciple.

5 out of 5 stars For all those who have a loving heart and intelligent mind!.......1998-10-13

Serving Humanity is an outstanding collection of wisdom teaching on the Science of Service from the extensive writings of Alice Bailey and the Tibetan Master, Djwhal Khul. Our international spiritual group is using this book as a training manual. We learn that true service is basically the spontaneous outflow of a loving heart and an intelligent mind, produced by the inevitable inflow of spiritual force and not simply by strenuous physical plane activity. The true server lives, serves, works and influences, asking nothing for himself personally.

The service the Tibetan teaches helps awaken a deep sense of brotherhood in humanity. "Work and give, love and think, and aid those groups who are building and not destroying, loving and not attacking, lifting and not tearing down. Work with groups who are not fighting other groups and organizations, no matter how sincere their motive."

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has made contact with the soul, awakened to the universal suffering of humanity, and wants to work for a civilization of greater light and good will.

I have kept this book by my bedside for a year. It is my guidebook and inspiration for following my heart and creating my life's work. This book covers every aspect of service, what it is and what it isn't. This is a book for all those who want to make a contribution, who are feeling the pull of their soul, and who want to advance on their spiritual path by serving humanity.
