Book Description

In spite of remarkable differences, Eric and Tommy are as close as brothers. Eric, a Nordic Adonis, is graced by a seemingly endless supply of good fortune. Tommy is a lame black boy, cursed with health problems, yet he remains optimistic and strong. After tragedy rips their makeshift family apart, the lives of these boys diverge astonishingly: Eric, the golden youth, is given everything but trusts nothing; Tommy, motherless and impoverished, has nothing, but feels lucky every day of his life. In a riveting story of modern-day resilience and redemption, the two confront separate challenges, and when circumstances reunite them years later, they draw on their extraordinary natures to confront a common enemy and, ultimately, save their lives. Fortunate Son has the same brilliant observations of the hidden currents of modern life that won great praise for The Man in My Basement. It is a gripping literary novel that puts complex ideas and forces in play with irresistible drama.

1 out of 5 stars Just recycled this awful book!.......2007-08-31

First ever Amazon review here, written to spare people the thoroughly unsatisfying experience of trying to finish this unbelievably bad novel. Despite the glowing praise which persuaded me to purchase the book, it's poorly written, completely flat and one-dimensional, alternately sickly sweet and falsely gritty. It gets one star for a well-written public relations campaign that claims "a modern-day parable" -- driving the eye-ball-rolling reader to persist to the end in a desperate (and unfulfilled) need to know why this book was ever allowed to be published in the first place. Some editor failed to do his/her job!!

5 out of 5 stars The best yet.......2007-08-26

I have read all of Mosley's books. This one is by far the best. I read the whole book in one day and called my daughter for her to read it also. Such a sad but uplifting story about family. Poor Thomas, but Eric has his problems too. He was afraid to let go and love. Parents should consider the future of their childern's lifes. If Thomas's mother had married Eric's father, his(Thomas)fate would have been different. But in life, what doesn't kill or destory us will make us stronger. Book ended like there could be a part two, hope so.

5 out of 5 stars My First, but not last, Mosley........2007-07-26

I listen to a lot of books as I commute from home to work and back again, and for some reason, I had missed Mr. Mosley's writings, but I won't make that mistake again. If Fortunate Son is any indication of Mr. Mosley's abilities as an author, then he is a great one. This book had me crying, laughing and at one point even wishing that poor Thomas would just go on and die. That poor, poor boy. I know it is fiction, but this book could be as real as the drive I make everyday. This life holds no promises and being able to deal with what it dishes out can be a testament to anyone's character, and what character Thomas had. Wonderful, wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Mosley gets better and better.......2007-06-02

I have read Walter Mosley's books from the start, even before president Clinton named him as his favorite author. This book, Fortunate Son proves his staying power as an author. Each book Walter Mosley writes improves over the last. I recomend this book to the old readers of his works, and also to the new readers. You won't be let down.
Wonderful

5 out of 5 stars I Liked This Book.......2007-05-14

Deeply engrossing and heart-breaking, while also entertaining. This story touched me on a very spiritual level. With a little more fantasy, this could rival an Octavia Butler novel.

2 out of 5 stars Lame, not LAMF, but seriously LAME.......2007-01-21

This reads like the writer(s) took Greil Marcus and a VH-1 documentary, put them in a blender and then connected the dots into a lameass story. I found myself cringing at every page. Elvis is such a hackneyed reference (if Cher uses Elvis as a refernce point that should be a clue to leave it alone) that its hard to do right. Also irritating were the none-to-veiled references. Why the hell not just go ahead and quote? Its part of popular culture, and later on in the story names are named, so the Joycean (while creative) medeley of rock and roll patois/references feels unneccesary. It also goes way beyond suspension of disbelief to throw in Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungeon as 'motivating factors' for Batman. Why not the tragedy of the loss of innocents at Altamont, or at the Cincinati Who fiasco?
The major problems with are the writing and the time it was published. The references are so stereotyped, hackneyed, and lacking in insight that it suggests that the writer(s) may not have been in touch with rock and roll, and therefore makes poor subject material for a story. You can see this is in the omission of various figures of the canon (e.g., there are more punk icons than Mr. Vicious which would have made better characters, figures in the metal and Black Metal scene who would have made striking villianous characters, and even pop and contemporary figures, such as less-veiled references to Cobain, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi, Moon, Bonham, Barrett, etc (note that the list of dead rock and rollers is far from limited, yet it would appear that in Jones' world there were only 6). Even the way the people hold their guitars suggests someone unfamiliar with the art form. And the scene with all the kids singing along to the song in the woods? Very Broadway as opposed to Hammersmith.
Finally, the time this was published, 1999, seems to be 10 years too late. the subtextual themes about the vanishing middle class, the blue-collar lip of the unemployment bubble was a more appropriate theme for the Grunge backdrop of late 80s early 90s. There would have been more fuel for Cobain tie-ins and more of a cultural support in the unifying power of rock and roll as a revolutionary enegery. By 1999 rock and roll was dead but only Marilyn Manson claimed the body (and promptly molested it). Rock had become a plastic boner band with all the revolutionary power of a jiggly dildo. The net result is that, in 1999 when this was published, the very ideas that form the core of the narrative were already passe, given way to posse and the exploitation of the other p that people were down with. The story was dead when it hit the water, and kept sinking.
Bottom line: even the most obsessive Batfans will be thankful to leave this out of the library, leave it on the subway, or better yet, under my wheels.

3 out of 5 stars Not worthy of the format, but it has its own merits........2006-09-29

Batman: Fortunate Son is something of an odd animal. In a way, it's like that one cringe-inducing episode of your favorite TV show where they brought on the fictional TV-created "rock stars" (and it seems like every eighties or nineties 8PM TV action/adventure show eventually did this for some reason, from the A-Team to MacGyver). But in another, it provides a bit of much-needed plot diversity to the Batman mythos, which can get repetitive at times (murky streets of Gotham, crazed supervillains, gangsters, etc).

To begin, let's look at the creative team. Gerard Jones was a prolific DC (and Marvel) writer in the nineties, with notable runs on Wonder Man and various Green Lantern-related titles (Along with Green Lantern: Mosaic, Guy Gardner and Trinity, he was also the last pre-"Emerald Twilight" Green Lantern writer). Artist Gene Ha was a DC discovery during that period, doing spot fill-in work on the Green Lantern books written by Jones before handling main art chores on "Trinity" and then moving on to bigger projects like this one and some ABC stuff. This is sort of a transition project for Ha as he was just moving from "hot newcomer" to a status as a quality veteran who does good art, but without ever becoming prolific.

In terms of story, it's important to note that despite the title, Batman is a supporting character here. But while Robin takes centerstage over his mentor, neither of them are the "main" character. That's reserved for the "villain/pawn" of the piece, Isaak Crowe (a pretty decent fictional rocker name, I guess). This structure is very unusual for a Batman story, and that's where both the problems and the strengths begin. Throughout the book, many "Un-Batmanly" things take place. Our heroes infight over rock-and-roll (an idea which mostly worked), jaunt across the country in Ha's very cool version of the Batwing (an idea that was a nice change from Gotham only), and operate in full daylight among crowds of people (something that's almost a no-no in Batbooks because the character is considered an "urban legend" according to DC).

Then there's the "God of Rock", an ersatz Elvis who has a heavy presence over the story despite being dead. I found the "God" to be very entertaining because there was a lot of great satire surrounding him. It was a lot like the "Aaron Viva" character on "Brisco County, Jr." I guess. The only problem is that this humor did damage the dramatic sensibilities of the rest of the story, even though it's probably the most entertaining part of the book, especially for an Elvis fan.

At one point, there's a very funny tribute to Elvis related to Captain Marvel, Jr. It's well-known that Elvis was a comics fan who absolutely loved CM, Jr. and actively patterned some of his costumes and capes after that character. At one point in the fictional "Graceland" stand-in, there's an "Elvis jumpsuit" on display with a LOT of Marvel Family elements added in (more than Elvis ever used in reality).

And there's the ending, which I won't give away, but it's fairly cliched on several accounts. However, if you have any familiarity with Elvis conspiracy theories, then you may find it worth a chuckle.

In total, it's a mixed bag. This story is definitely NOT worth a twenty-five dollar hardcover, but had it been a $4.95 annual or something, it would have been considered pretty decent. Fortunately, by buying used here, that's about what I paid.

1 out of 5 stars ....What?.......2006-08-20

This really has to be the worst Batman book I've read. It's just plaing boring. The entire premise is ridiculous and there's a total lack of what makes Batman, Batman. The whole idea that Batman needs to learn about rock music to defeat evil is just plain stupid. Plus, Robin is going to leave Batman because they disagree on whether a rocker who blew up a music video studio did it of his own free will or not. The entire premise of the story is so unlike any Batman story that's come before it in a very bad way. The only intriguing part of this book is the artwork. Most of it is normal fair. What really caught my attention was the way the artist drew the eyes of the characters. The artwork on the masks of Batman and Robin really humanizes the characters as you can actually see their eyes, as opposed to the usual white slits. If you like pretty pictures get the book. If you're looking for a good story with a well thought out plot, character development, and a story that belongs in a Batman book, look somewhere else.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst of Batman Harbound Graphic Novels.......2001-04-08

Everything about this book "says" magizine format, yet, DC rips the reader of with a hardbound. I keep it, and would buy it regardless, because I collect the hardbound graphic novels.

The story is for the 12-14 year old male who loves "rock" music and in some way wants to feel validated about his musical taste. It is mostly a generation gap story where both Batman and Robin understand eachother a little bit more at the end of the book.

The art work is average and the story better suited for a price of two bucks. If it sold at the magazine news stand price, it would be worth. But a hardbound book is like going to the movies after a matinee. You pay full price because it is worth it. This book is more liek the ABC movie of the week. Little investment for a little enjoyment.

If you are buying this book as a gift, get it for a boy 12-14, in to rock music and Batman. He will give it a big "thumbs up." But to everyone else, who is a Batman fan, get something else.

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Batman story based on rock music.......2000-07-27

This graphic novel is a great example of what comics can be. Anyone with an interest in Batman or rock music will enjoy this book. The story concerns a young musician who some believe is destined to save the soul of rock. Others, including the Batman, dismiss him as a greedy servant of evil. Robin, however, is a fan. Debate rages in the Batcave as elsewhere, until the young star, driven by visions of the God of Rock (a blond-haired version of Elvis, dripping with verisimilitude) disappears and begins to lose his mind. The story shows some interesting aspects of the batman/robin relationship and manages to tell a compelling superhero story set against the backdrop of the turbulent music industry.

5 out of 5 stars Cupid with a difference.......2006-03-02

Even Greek deities must progress with the times to discharge their divine duties, as Eros and his wife Psyche discover in Las Vegas ala Sin City. Hence, the birth of Cupid, Inc, an agency that ostensibly matches clients to their sex fantasies but in reality tries to help them find true love. Throw in a meddling Aphrodite who thinks she knows better how love matches should be arranged, a sharp-tongued nymph and a couple other idiosyncratic Greek gods and goddesses and you know this story is going to be a delightful light-hearted romp.

Revolving around the agency, the 4 short erotic love stories in this collection feature lots of comic relief, barbed banters, likeable characters and hot, steamy sex. It's a sheer pleasure to read, like a piece of lemon cake you can still taste on your tongue long after you've devoured it. Suspend your disbelief and let the games begin...

The Accountant and the Virgin - Sara knows she couldn't have the boss she's had a crush on so she settled for the next best thing -- purchase an office fantasy to lose her virginity. A wrong address leads to her meeting Nic the accountant and a very satisfying encounter in his office...

The Stars in Her Eyes - Jamie is thrilled to have won Cupid, Inc's contest for a date with movie star Kevan Rune. Kevan agreed to be the prize of the contest as a personal favor and expects his date to be a simpering, starry-eyed female. Will the night end at just wine and dine or turn into something more?

One Mile Up...A Little to the Left - Life has never been better. Karee, associate editor for Love Magazine, gets to act out her fantasy of hot sex with a handsome man on a luxury airliner all in the name of her job. What she doesn't know is her assigned fantasy partner, Bret, is the managing editor of rival Max-Out Magazine, who also plans to write an article about the experience...

The Spy Who Rubbed Me - Badgered by his mother, retired jewel thief Paul agrees to participate in a spy fantasy arranged by Cupid, Inc. His partner in the mission to `steal' Aphrodite's golden apple is Helen, a waitress who's bored with her life. It was all supposed to be just an exciting game. They didn't expect to have to contend for the apple with a very real Greek goddess...

Cupid Inc

It's the 21st century and Cupid doesn't go around shooting people with arrows anymore. No, today he is an enlighted god, and with help from his wife Pysche, caters to the various fantasies of those willing to take a chance and explore the sexual side of themselves. Along with Aphrodite, who tends to interfere with her own good intentions, Eros and Pysche have made it their earthly mission to bring people together in love. And if the couples get to live out a fantasy or two, well, that's icing on the cake.

"The Accountant and the Virgin"
Who knew accountants could be so sexy? Certainly not virginal Sara Beaumont, who was in for a surprise when the "sex in the office" fantasy she's been harboring turns in to a reality. In love with her boss Zeth, who doesn't take notice of her, Sara can't stop fantasizing about having sex on an office desk. Deciding to make her fantasy come true and get rid of her virginity, Sara contacts "Cupid, Inc" to make it happen. Only instead of sending her to a man with a similar fantasy, Sara is accidentally sent to the office of Nic Anderson, the new accountant for "Cupid, Inc". Nic is immediately attracted to Sara, and more than willing to make her fantasy come true. But what happens when Sara's boss Zeth is pointed in Sara's direction? Will the magic she feels with Nic pale in comparison to the attention of her boss?

"The Stars in her Eyes"
Vegas wedding planner Janie Brown is trying to keep her business afloat in the wedding capital of the U.S. She doesn't have time to date. But thanks to her well-meaning sister, Janie has won a date with hot movie star Kevan Rune, who has reluctantly agreed to the date as a favor to Eros. Hounded by a sleazy tabloid reporter, Kevan is immensely grateful when a woman in a silver dress comes to his rescue, only to find out it's his date. They have a wonderful time together, and the attraction is instant and intense. But both have been burned before - Janie by a philandering spouse and Kevan by a publicity-hungry girlfriend. Will a stalking tabloid reporter ruin their chance for happiness? Not if love has anything to do with it....

"One Mile Up...A Little to the Left"
Karee Lomen is a journalist for "Love", a magazine for women and all things about, well, love and romance. The thing is, she has had this recurring fantasy about the mile-high club ever since she had a bit of an adventure on a plane as a teenager. Her friend and boss Veronica gives Karee the ticket, er, chance to make that fantasy come true with a little help from Cupid Inc. The only catch is she has to write an article about the experience for the magazine, which she will gladly do for "Love". The night before her pleasure trip, she attends a party for the arts at the Bellagio hotel, and meets a man who sparks her interest, only he disappears before she can get to know him better. It isn't until later that she finds out he's Bret Jernigan, is a fellow journalist for Max-Out, a men's magazine who laughs at all that "Love" stands for. But by now she's already fulfilled her fantasy, with Bret, and is falling for him. Now Karee and Bret have to decide which is more important: their relationship or their careers..... Readers will get a kick out of the antics of Bret's boss Max, who's attention-getting schemes seem to be geared towards getting a reaction out of Karee's boss Veronica. I'm interested in finding out where that may lead....

"The Spy that Rubbed Me"
Helen Manzana is a waitress bored with the repetiveness of her life. She dreams about an adventure from one of her favorite James Bond movies. One day a regular customer leaves Helen a very generous tip, and a gift certificate for a spy fantasy from Cupid, Inc. Days later, Helen's normal day is interrupted when a dishy man in a tuxedo and an English accent begs for her help. And so starts the beginning of Helen's fantasy.... Paul Aris is a reformed thief and current do-gooder determined to stay on the straight and narrow. But even he can't refuse his mother when she asks him to steal a valuable item from the Troy Casino - all in the name of love and adventure. Determined to make his mother happy, he plays along with the spy fantasy, and in the process meets a woman who gets his blood pumping just by being in the same room.

"Cupid, Inc" is a lot about fantasies, but mostly the journey is about love, and matching two people who belong together. I like the whole mythology premise, and the way Michele Bardsley has set it up for the possibility of future stories. I hope she's planning a follow-up book - I think there are a lot of fantasies left to be fulfilled. This collection of stories was quick and delightful - perfect for a lazy afternoon to ward off the winter chill and warm your heart.

    Book Description

The planet Korwar was a glittering jewel of a world, inhabited by the galaxy's wealthiest, visited by the upper classes of other worlds in search of diversion. The jewel had a flaw: the Dipple, its name coming from a contraction of "displaced person," where the misfits, the hopeless, the penniless eke out a wretched existence on the dole. Two young men hoped to escape from the Dipple: Troy Horan was deported from his own planet after it lost an interstellar war. When he had a chance to work in an unusual pet shop, offering exotic creatures from other worlds to the wealthy, he though his luck had changed. But the owner was playing a dangerous game of intrigue, and when he was murdered Troy barely escaped with his own life. Aided only by telepathic animals from old Terra who had befriended him, he had no choice but to hide in ruins left behind by the now-vanished original inhabitants of Korwar; ruins which explorers had entered without returning. . . . Nik Kolherne had a face so cruelly scared and disfigured that he wore a mask to cover it. When he was recruited with a promise of being given a new face, a face which would make a young heir think he was someone else, he was uneasy, but accepted the offer. Then he found out that he was party to a kidnapping for more sinister purposes than he had been told, and he was the only hope of the young heir's survival-if the two of them could survive on a planet veiled in eternal night, swarming with dangerous predators. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Two From the Dipple.......2007-09-24

Masks of the Outcasts (2005) is an omnibus edition of two SF novels in the Dipple universe: Catseye and Night of Masks.

When the War of Two Sectors broke out, the Council evacuated Displaced Persons to centers on several worlds. One of these Dipples was located on Korwar, a playground planet frequented by the rich and powerful from many worlds. The Dipple stood to the south of Tikil, the planetary capital.

Some inhabitants of the Dipple found their way out by working as casual laborers in Tikil. Others volunteered for offplanet labor and were shipped out in frozen sleep. A few bought membership in the Thieves Guild.

In Catseye (1961), the Horans had been evacuated from Norden to the Dipple on Korwar. Range Master Lang had volunteered for military service and did not return. Then his wife died of the Cough, a passing illness that was particularly hard on those from Norden. Their son was the sole survivor of the Horan family.

In this novel, ten year later, Troy Horan has only his wide Range Master belt and a few memories to remind him of Norden. Now he is working as a casual laborer in Tikil. One morning, he is offered a job by the mechnical assigner and accepts it. Today he will escape the Dipple for a few hours.

Troy reports for work at Kyger's, a purveyor of extraordinary pets. On his first day, he frustrates an attempt to steal a pair of Terran cats. Supervisor Zul -- a full-blooded Bushman -- is wounded in the attempt and Kyger offers Troy a seven day contract to fill in for the injured man.

During the incident, Troy receives a warning in mindspeech from the cats. Later, he approaches their cage and exchanges a few thoughts. He conceals these communications from his employer and co-workers since he is not really sure what has happened.

Troy has an affinity for animals and does especially well with the fussel hawk, a hunting bird from Norden. He is asked to accompany a customer into the wild to prove the bird's qualities. He will spend three days in the company of Rerne, a high ranking member of the Hunter Clans.

Before this excursion, Troy is sent to a hillside villa to deliver special food for a pet kinkajou owned by Commander Varan Di. Since the Commander had just been murdered, the patrollers warn off his flitter, but allow him to continue after he explains his errand. As he is approaching the villa, the pet runs away from a patroller carrying it out of the building and leaps into Troy's arms.

The patrollers are upset at finding the pet rummaging through the Commander's papers. Troy points out that the kinkajou is a very imitative animal and his probably copying his master's habitual routine. While he is talking to the patrollers, the kinkajoy is pleading with him in mindspeech to take it away from the estate. Eventually, the patrollers tell him to return the pet to Kyger's shop and they fly away.

In this story, Troy finds that a pair of Terran foxes can also talk to him in mindspeech. He even overhears a conversation between the animals and their master. He begins to suspect Kyger of some form of espionage. Then Kyger is murdered and Zul tries to kill these animals. Troy steals a flitter and flees into the wilderness with the five Terran animals.

In Night of Masks (1964), a decade after the war, Nik Kolherne was one of the unlucky ones who stayed behind in the center. He had been evacuated from his planet on a space freighter that had been forced down by the enemy. Most of the crew and passengers had died in the crash, but Nik had been saved from the wreck.

After the rescue, the Dipple medical staff tried to regrow the torn and burned flesh on his face, but the attempts were unsuccessful. His disfigurements disturbed possible employers, so he cannot find a job on the outside. He even habitually hides his features from his fellow residents.

In this novel, one day Nik is settling down in a warehouse to listen to another fantasy escape tape when he overhears three men discussing an illegal operation. Although he stays as quiet as possible, one detects his presence and lifts him out of his hiding place. Another hits him and knocks him unconscious.

When Nik recovers, he finds himself in the home of Stowar, a man with connections and one of the conspirators. Captain Leeds -- the spacer who had discovered his presence -- recruits Nik for a risky proposition that will entail replacement of his face. Nik will do anything for a new face.

In this story, Nik is inserted onto the villa grounds, appearing to Vandy as a fantasy hero from the child's dreams, and conducts him to a lifeboat that will take them away from Korwar. They travel in stasis and Nik does not recover consciousness until the LB is about to land. Vandy becomes frightened by the pressure and seems to be questioning the Hacon identity, but Nik calms the boy until they have landed.

Dis is a planet of a red dwarf that doesn't emit visible light. The infra-red starshine leaves the world in perpetual darkness. The man who meets them after landing is wearing cin-goggles to transform the IR light to something human eyes can see. Fabic takes them to a set of native ruins that have been converted to human quarters. On the way, he blasts an attacking carnivore out of the sky.

Later, Fabic takes Nik to meet Orkhad, the local veep. Orkhad is a suequ weed smoker, which tends to make the user believe himself capable of any feat. Orkhad doesn't seem to have a high opinion of Leeds, but is willing to let Nik remain just to keep the boy peaceful. During the conversation, Orkhad says several things that contradict the story told by Leeds.

Vandy is very upset with the whole situation and conflicted over his feelings toward Hacon, the fantasy hero. He tries the door and finds it locked. Later he tries the door once again and finds it unlocked. Nik holds him back to plan their actions and then leads the escape.

These stories are typical of the Dipple tales. Some resident of that slum finds a way out and takes it, only to discover that there is a catch. These tales usually involve the Thieves Guild or some other illicit organization, which offers through its agents that which the protagnist most desires.

Highly recommended for Norton fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange planets, future cultures, and high adventure.

Andre Norton's MASKS OF THE OUTCASTS tells of two outcasts: Troy, forced to hide in the wake of his employer's murder, and Nik, who has to hide his scarred face from the world until an offer to masquerade as an heir is tied to his recovery. The two hope to escape the slum which has been their lives - and unusual connections are drawn in this classic tale.

5 out of 5 stars Very deep book.......2006-10-04

The best book I have ever read on Christian prayer. The book is very informative, very accurate, and very thorougly Bible-based. It enriched deeply my prayers as well as my relationship to God. The book covers all topics related with prayer from praying with your spouse and children to keeping a diary with your prayers.

A beautiful and moving book I would absolutely recommand for every sincere Christian.

    1 out of 5 stars A clear explanation and a great resource.......2006-04-28

For the two years and over that I've owned this book, it has become a great resource as a clear, understandable explanation of Christian prayer and as a practical guide for taking prayerful action. In my service as the prayer leader at my church, I use it as the textbook for a beginning class on prayer, and extra copies of it don't last long in our "bookstore." My thanks to Richard Wagner for this handy guide!

5 out of 5 stars christian Prayer for Dummies.......2006-03-22

It was wonderful. It covered all aspects of prayer, including, many I wasn't even aware of. The book was written in clear, concise language. I recommend it for anyone interested in prayer.

5 out of 5 stars an exceptionally legible pandect of wagner's methodology.......2004-05-17

this book ponders a philosophical practice of classical interactions relating the widespread patterns of spatial relativity with yet another example of the hidden depths of urban rhizomatic syncretist devotion. its adulation of exercises for idiosyncratic sidesplitting as both lawful and unorthodox places it among the most tantalizingly rigorous of contemporary christian methodologies. surely it is a large step from the so called objective (or 'outside') temptation of organic being, to the retrospective journey of a working life.

    5 out of 5 stars Good!!!!!!!!.......2003-05-05

This is an excellent book, it really teaches you to pray. It's very informative and interesting and cool! I'm very glad I read this book, it has helped me a lot.

Spirituality for Dummies is for smart souls who know that we are all really beginners when it comes to understanding spirituality. Like all books for dummies, the layout is filled with lots of information boxes, bulleted lists, humorous cartoons, quick tips, and pithy quotes (from Marcus Aurelius to George Carlin).

Fortunately, author Sharon Janis put a lot of research into this informative discussion on spiritual growth. As a result, she maintains a solid voice that transcends the cluttered and sometimes superficial format. Spiritual practices, such as yoga and mediation, are briefly explained along with how to cultivate spiritual values and rise above suffering. At times she offers the kindly voice of experience: "When I'm able to give something to another person, I know it is God giving through me. Then, rather than expecting anything in return I am grateful for having been of service." At other times she is the voice of a well-educated teacher: "Ex means 'out of,' while status is a 'fixed condition.' This means that, in a way, the more fixed conditions you have to move out of, the more ecstatic you can become. Therefore every trouble in your life is really a beautiful gift to be unwrapped." --Gail Hudson

Sharon is humorous as well as informative and wise...definitely this book is a keeper. That's all I have to say for the spitiual seekers out there.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to spirituality!.......2007-06-08

This book is a great introduction to spiritual concepts which has helped me begin a spiritual journey. The book presents a different way of looking at the world, which is helpful to me since I was raised in a traditional Christian environment.

This book has given me enough background information to understand more complicated texts, which is exactly why I bought it.

The author does a great job of incorporating traditions and sayings from many different religions. It is well written and easy to understand - even humorous!

5 out of 5 stars This book was EXACTLY what I was looking for!!.......2007-02-07

After years of wondering what the meaning of life was, and what my purpose here on earth is, I found this book! It helped me uncover the world of spirituality, which in turn helped me answer some of these most fundamental questions!

The book is such an easy read, and the author has a brilliant sense of humor. I often reference the book over and over, for information on certain specific subjects, which is very easy to do in the "Dummies" format. It is also written to embrace all religions, non-religions, races, genders, etc. It truly is a book for everyone!

I recommend this book to anyone seeking to grow spiritually, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did (and still do)!

3 out of 5 stars Good Book - Bad Music.......2006-11-04

I found this a good read in better understanding of the subject. It is a good beginning.

BUT the CD is worthless. The music is an insult to all the wonderful types of music that could have been included to support the search for a more spiritual life. Where is Mozart, Japanese flute, or Tibetan, etc.?

    4 out of 5 stars Gets a point across.......2006-09-13

While I was hoping for a more traditional, religious description of spirituality in Spirituality for Dummies, the end result that I found was also fairly illuminating. One of the common themes in many religions is a quest for what we call spirituality, roughly meaning a sense of universal connection and enlightenment. Author Sharon Janis has described this phenomenon focusing on spirituality directly rather than as an aspect of some particular religion or by comparison to any theology, though she does relate it somewhat more to Eastern traditions than to Western ones.

From the start her focus is on the ordinary, individual practitioner. In the context here, spirituality is a somewhat new-age experience (however old the traditions are elsewhere in the world). It relates to a notion of letting go of physical and material attachments. The word `attachment' is key, and Janis reiterates the common notion that anything in moderation is probably unproblematic. It boils down to the notion that if one never expects anything, one is never disappointed. Put another way, you can't take it with you. Put another way, ... the list of well-known sayings is quite long and familiar. Janis organizes her words well, and tries to relate an abundance of suggestions and ideas to a wide variety of issues in life. She does fall into the common-enough habit of `reminding' the reader of how unhappy he is with a `materialistic' or `consumer' culture. We can infer then that the target audience is one that has already accepted, implicitly or otherwise, that several aspects of Western Civilization are known to be flawed, harmful, or unproductive of overall happiness. Anyone satisfied with his or her own life is unlikely to be swayed by the book. On the other hand, many of these sayings, expanded and commented upon here, can provide some concise reminders that we should occasionally step back and examine our priorities. Sometimes thinking about our position in the universe and our relation to other people can serve as a reality-check. That much I think is accessible to any reader. For the rest, I'd venture to say that the reader will get out of Spirituality for Dummies as much as he is already ready to take in.
