4 out of 5 stars Replacing toilet paper rolls in Japan.......2007-05-09

Although this novel, whose title in French is "Stupeur et Tremblements," is available in an English translation, read it in the original French if you can. It is the funny (and sometimes appalling) account of Amélie-san, a young Belgian woman living in Tokyo who goes to work for Yumimoto, a Japanese corporation. Because she speaks excellent Japanese, she looks forward to an opportunity to use her language skills. Instead, she misunderstands the arcane codes of conduct that govern the relationships between employees and their superiors, and her relationship with the beautiful Fubuki Mori, her boss, deteriorates to the point where Amelie finds herself in charge of her very own "office"---the company toilets. All of the novel takes place inside Yumimoto, on the 44th floor of a skyscraper office building, although Amelie occasionally peers out of a window in the bathroom as if she is encapsulated in some strange underwater vehicle from which she cannot escape. In addition to detailing the bizarre hierarchy that has assigned her to replacing toilet paper rolls, she makes interesting observations on the nature of Japanese employee relationships and on the difficulty of being a female executive in Japan. You'll have to decide for yourself how much truth lies behind the slapstick quality of her wacky encounters with her bosses. The novel is evidently based on the author's own experience as an employee of a Japanese company. It makes a nice counterpoint to those rhapsodic East-meets-West memoirs that over-romanticize Japan.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing, sad, haunting........2007-02-20

The spare writing and stark story are captivating. This writer's magically elegant, restrained prose is magnetically beautiful. I felt as though I couldn't tear my eyes away. I started reading the book at lunch time, sitting alone at a table in a restaurant, and didn't stop reading until I had finished the whole book; I had completely forgotten where I was (and was blind to the rudeness of occupying a whole booth by myself long after I'd finished eating, while hungry people waited in line). Nothomb's prose brings to mind the haunting, restrained style of Jane Smiley in "The Age of Grief," or of Jamaica Kincaid in "Lucy." Like those works, it reads like a novella or a short story: each word that is written, as well as each word that the author chose to omit, carries individual weight and commands the reader's full attention. Equally compelling is the mysteriously fateful story arc that carries the heroine to ever greater suffering and isolation. Although it's a realistic novel, it reads a little like a fairy tale; it brings to mind Paul Coelho and, to some extent, Haruki Murakami. You feel, as with those writers, that you're reading about magically meaningful, symbolically rich events whose meaning you can't quite grasp. The book is also compelling in the way a nonfiction memoir of a miserable childhood or adolescence can be compelling; you can't stop reading it in the way you can't stop reading "Name All The Animals," "Prep," "Don't Lets Go To The Dogs Tonight," "The Glass Castle," or "Are You Somebody?" You have to keep reading just to discover whether the heroine survives. This book is a perfect little jewel; to change a single word would diminish it.

2 out of 5 stars The author was young, inexperienced and had no useful skills.......2006-09-20

It can indeed be extremely stressful for a Japanese speaking foreigner working at a Japanese company in Japan. I say this from direct personal experience. But my impression is that the author's only skill was the ability to speak Japanese. She had no basic office skills e.g. she was unable to perform simple calculations. And she had neither business training nor business experience. Amelie Nouthomb's degree was in philology not business or economics or finance. This being the case she was unqualified to perform any complex tasks. Little wonder that her brief experience of working in Japan was such a disaster.

4 out of 5 stars FEAR AND TREMBLING: A Review.......2006-07-19

A charming and funny read. Nothomb establishes themes she more fully develops in THE CHARACTER OF RAIN. Fascinating details about Japan.

4 out of 5 stars from a Japanese point of view...........2006-04-02

It was a quick engaging read for sure and most of the time I enjoyed it. But at times I was annoyed by her satirical views of Japanese culture that went on and on, which seemed to have grown rather too quickly and too extensive out of such a short period of her work experiences. Therefore, I couldn't help but feel that the writer had set off to work for the Japanese corporation, regardless of the impression that she gave at the beginning of the book that she always admired Japan, with a mindset to convince her pre-existing views and make fun of the company, with the pretentious ambition that someday she would write an entertaining book about her experience. And, she succeeded! Yes, there's some truth in what she described about the corporate culture where a new female worker often starts a day/work making tea for others, a boss could be very unreasonable and just order you something with no explanation, envy issues towards other's promotion which lead to some bullying, a woman who's over 26 feels pressure to be already married and so on... I am a Japanese woman, I know. But, commiting a suicide is family pride? Com'on! Nobody in Japan hears that kind of value since 40's. Except for during the Second World War when the nationalism drove people mad, if anything, a suicide is a big shame to the family, nothing to be proud of. And, there's no such a name as "Tsutomeru" ( meaning Work), described as her boss' child's name and made a big deal out of as a proof that Japanese people are work crazy. The name must be "Tsutomu" ( meaning Earnest). There were other rudimental mistakes in Japanese words which the author inserted here and there. All of which made me think that she's not as fluent in Japanese as she claimed to be and that she may have developed more misunderstanding about Japan than she would ever doubt. But, the author has a very perky style of writing which I liked, and has a hilarious way of seeing and describing things which made me laugh out loud at times, so here I am giving 4 stars. And, the peculiar "sadist-masochist" type relationship between Amelie and her boss, Fubuki, was so funny and very well written, however, it's not at all a typical relationship between a westerner female worker and a Japanese boss. Although this book has a look of non-fiction, you need to remind youreself to read it as a " novel" as is so categorized!! And lastly, I liked the movie better than this book which made things more balanced between her own clumsiness and a Japanese caricature.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Erotic Futuristic Trio!.......2007-09-11

Evangeline Anderson uses her excellent creative imagination in three well-written erotic paranormal novellas full of sensual pleasure.

The Girl, The Geek and the Time Machine is one of those stories that proves the saying "You can't judge a book by its cover" is true, when Dr. Ethan Robinson uses his time machine to help co-worker Kara at Smthye Labs, go back and restart a horribly bad day in her busy, hectic life. Kara, beautiful and always trying to please, especially her fiance Brad, has tried everything, including Holistic Healing Therapy to make herself perfect for Brad. When Ethan and Kara enter his time machine, without their clothes, they come to realize their attraction is more than physical. This was one of those enjoyable stories that had me thinking of the country song Somebody...somebody in the next car, somebody on the next train, somebody in the coffee shop you walk by everyday, somebody you look at but never really see...somewhere out there...is somebody. And in this story...out there somewhere in that time machine Kara finds somebody!

In Mirror of the Heart, Taylor Reeves meets the handsome and sexy futuristic cop Reese, when she is transported into the future and cloned to be a high priced courtesan in a futuristic agency that specializes in secondary clones. There is mystery and intrigue, from the beginning in present day Tampa to way into the late two thousands. Reese stuggles with his need for justice and vengeance against his enemies who just happen to be those who run this cloning agency and his deep desire that is growing for Taylor. How can he avoid wanting her, pleasuring her to keep her out of danger, at the same time not feeling as if he is using her as the agency plans, while also desiring a future with her? This sensual story is face paced and keeps the reader riveted to the pages.

In the hot and steamy Wild-Men and Wormholes, the beautiful futuristic archelogist, anthopologist and scientist, Ariel Stone-Tarrington travels through space to find unknown cultures, only to come across the handsome and sexy Kor. Lust turns to love. Will Ariel be able to save Kor and his people from her colleagues and becoming some scientific experiment in order to save their love?

Readers who enjoy the futuristic, time-travel paranormals will love this book! All three novellas are intelligent, hot, steamy sexy! Evangeline Anderson has a superb immagination to fit the bill and fans will be looking forward to more and more futuristic paranormal romances with the added pleasure of erotica for that little extra spice!

5 out of 5 stars three terrific erotic science fiction romances .......2007-03-15

"The Girl, The Geek, and the Time Machine". Five years with Brad has Kara Wilson thinking their relationship is permanent. However, she also likes the geeky scientist Dr. Ethan Robertson and wants to ride in his time machine to see what her future is with Brad. To take a spin she must enter naked with Ethan as her guide, but he is anything but a geek with his clothes off.

"Mirror of the Heart". The dream of making love with the hunk was so visual, Taylor Simms comes. She wonders who the stranger that has captured her fantasy and especially her libido is; she knows it is not Miles whom she bought some sexy underwear to seduce him. She will learn soon that her dream lover Reese is not born yet, but plans to travel back over a century to make love in the flesh with the woman he considers a goddess.

"Wild-Men and Wormholes". Leaving behind her fiancé Milton who is behaving more like a Tergal rodent-like mammal than a lover, anthropologist Ariel Stone-Tarrington travels to study the mysterious natives of planet Tordanji Prime. These locals are sentient but not considered humanoid. However, she meets Kor who is more human than Milton as they fall into lust and love with wild abandon.

These three terrific erotic science fiction romances work because readers will believe that the PLEASURE PLANET in each is a genuine setting. The lead characters are top rate while the story lines are hot and exhilarating, but it is the background that makes Planet Anderson's novellas so much fun to read.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Pleasure Planet.......2007-03-09

The Girl, The Geek and The Time Machine

Kara Wilson has been engaged to Brad Dodgeson four or five years but he suffers from commitment issues. When she discovers a scientist that may be able to alter her fiancé's past, she jumps at the chance.

Dr. Ethan Robertson is that scientist and warily agrees to alter first her hot chocolate fiasco and, then her fiancé's high school bully problem.

Tara and Ethan embark on a path of ever changing circumstances, which result in unsatisfactory results. Will they ever give up?

Ms. Evangeline Anderson has written a touching and quirky story about what ifs.
I loved Kara and Ethan's interactions and it became obvious they were both fighting a strong attraction to each other. The sexual encounters will burn your retinas.

      Mirror of the Heart

Taylor Simms has just been dumped by her fiancé who ran off with her best friend. Drowning in Ben & Jerry's ice cream and, experiencing erotic dreams that leave her aching and unfulfilled, she reluctantly goes back to work.

Reese has been surveying Taylor for the Lunar Peace Keeping League, Genetic Crimes Unit for quite some time. He finally has the opportunity to kidnap the original to link with the primary clone used by his enemy Ycaza. Unwittingly he falls for the green-eyed beauty.

Using Taylor's dreams to track Ycaza's whereabouts is taxing for Taylor. It becomes increasingly more difficult for Reese to resist until Taylor decides pleasure is what she cannot live without.

Ms Anderson captures eloquently what could happen when science has no boundaries. I love that Taylor is a "healthy" woman with ample curves and I was drawn to her strength of character in strange circumstances. Reese with his underlying anger shows a surprisingly tender side to his single-minded pursuit of vengeance. This story gives new meaning to the pleasure pain principle.

      Wild-Men and Wormholes

Ariel Stone-Tarrington is a Xenological Anthropologist with a thirst for exploration on distant planets. She is also slated to marry Milton, a blue-blooded aristocrat who has no spine. Choosing him is a practical necessity if she wants access to her trust fund so she thinks he will be the least problematic. He proves her wrong when they take off through a wormhole to Tordanji Prime.

Corrin "Kor" Trafalger rescues Ariel from a sloarn determined to rip her head off after the spacecraft her and Milton were in crash lands on the jungle planet. Taking her to his home in his parents spacecraft, his curiosity has him touching her and through touch-telepathy, communicating with out speech.

Ariel and Kor begin a journey of discovery that has her marveling at the indigenous people who inhabit Tordanji and, leaves Kor yearning to mate with the first female of his kind he meets. Wanting him and knowing this is impossible she plots to take him home.

In this story, Ms. Evangeline Anderson chronicles the freshness derived from discovering something totally new. I loved Ariel's sense of adventure, and her growing attraction to the handsome yet childlike Kor who by his very innocence captures her heart like no other. Their candid sexual encounters are touching.

Ms Evangeline Anderson has written three diversely different stories, all capturing the extreme heat and intensity of making love. The heat in these stories will leave you burning.

                    4 out of 5 stars Another good Cole &Bunch Sci-fi book.......2000-10-12

This is a great Sci-fi novel that mixes in a lot of action, and great plot and an even better backround. The story follows the actions of Sten, a great secret operations soilder of the future and his actions after the fall of the huge empire that had run for thousands of years, with its ruler the emporo, being assinated. In the following power grab, Sten finds himself back in action. There is plenty of supense in this book, and I was drawn into the story and found myself reading chapter after chapter, saying just one more page. Nothing short of a great book.

Beautifully designed and printed, the Zaccheus Press edition of A Key to the Doctrine of the Eucharist is the first authorized edition to be published in over 50 years. It features a new introduction by Aidan Nichols. The preface is by Peter Kreeft.

                        5 out of 5 stars Christian thinker.......2005-04-09

I really love this book -- I first got my copy over a year ago, and have since read through it twice. This is a book filled with penetrating insights.

Like many people who consider themselves Christian, I never thought much of the Eucharist, even though I grew up in a Catholic home. My reading of A Key to the Doctrine of the Eucharist has changed that.

Some of the other reviewers here have mentioned the challenge this book poses in terms of reading, but that was not my experience. Sure, it's not "See Spot run," but the subject matter doesn't allow for that. The fact is that this is an extremely well-written book, and a pleasure to read. That said, Vonier touches on profound ideas -- the author goes very deep. But where he goes deepest, he exercises the most care -- going over certain layers of his thought more than once to allow the reader to better see the color and context of what he's talking about, a little like unfurling a great flag. When unfurled and it's up and waving in the wind before your eyes, it's awe-inspiring.

In this day and age, when the trivial is elevated, and the most important matters are completely neglected, this book is, in my opinion, a MUST READ for everyone who has any interest in his or her own soul. I mean this, if only because Christ called Himself "true food," by which, when it comes to us as Christians today, I believe He was referring to the Eucharist (c.f. John 6). I am no longer a Catholic, although I do admire the faith of some individual Catholics I know. And I sometimes can't help but wonder -- What is happening to the Catholic Church? It seems to be falling into a sinkhole of dissipation and corruption. Nonetheless, when it comes to the question of the Eucharist, Protestants are wrong. After reading "Key," I understand why the Eucharist is the heart of the Mass. When Jesus Christ stood before His disciples during the Last Supper, took bread and said, "Take, eat; this is My body," Matthew 14:22, He wasn't lying. I wish every Catholic would run out and buy, read and be inspired by A Key to the Doctrine of the Eucharist. It would make them better Catholics, which would be a blessing for us all.

5 out of 5 stars Be Renewed in authentic Catholic doctrine!.......2004-10-27

This book is relatively short, but contains some of the most thought-provoking insights on the mystery of the Eucharist to be written in the 20th century. Abbot Vonier was a visionary ahead of his time, some say, yet, he actually presents the Catholic doctrine of the Eucharist from its very inception, drawing largely from the Thomistic tradition. Contemporary "Catholics" may find it a difficult read at first, but be assured, if you persevere, the payoff is worth the work. This book should be mandatory for all seminarians and students of theology. This book is available directly from the publisher or from the Franciscan University of Steubenville bookstore for only $12.95 plus tax! Buy and read this book and be transformed in Christ.

5 out of 5 stars The Key to "A Key".......2004-07-05

The Key to the understanding of "A Key to the Doctrine of the Eucharist" is the first sentence of Chapter Ten. It should stand at the head of the book. "In theological matters the spark that illumines always comes from under the hoof of hard thinking." The hard thinking is accompanied by a certain "hard reading" because of the subject matter and at times because of the vocabulary. I am inclined to think that the average reader will find this work a challenge.

Given the atmosphere of "fuzzy" thinking run-a-muck in this modern era, one must prepare oneself well to deal with the concepts and the distinctions of Thomistic thought found in "A Key". Neither Abbot Vonier, St. Thomas nor the Catholic Faith, however allow for "fuzzy" thinking. Why should I be surprised! After further thought, the aforementioned sentence belongs where it was placed. Its effectiveness requires the experience of the struggle. Pay the price and the Catholic-of- faith will emerge significantly enriched.

"A Key" requires a clear faith in the supernatural which is not always a given in these times. This awakening occurred to me as I read deep into this little book, page 145 precisely: "Once we admit the fundamental principle that God has power to transpose reality and being from one order into the other, from the natural order into the sacramental order, we have committed ourselves to every possible instance of such transposition." But before that we must be clearly committed to the existence of the source of that fundamental principal. Especially in the matter of faith in a personal God, one with a central place in the life of each of us, we are required to reject "fuzzy thinking". Hazy notions incline toward a less than enthusiastic fidelity.

Perhaps because of "fuzzy thinking" far too many Catholics (not excluding some priests and deacons) treat the sacraments as mere "rites of passage" for which in turn they receive a "diploma." It's the "religion thing" to be done. "A Key", well digested, is a curative for that kind of mentality.

The guiding principle (A Key) that directs and informs the whole of this book is a well understood notion of sacramentality. Thankfully, the Abbott helps us in this regard. Nowhere is this truer than when speaking of the Eucharist. Religion is an integral part of the real world of everyday life. When we were born we were not endowed with a compartmentalized existence. It was a unified reality that was bestowed upon us. Through the reality of faith we enter into a mystical world, nonetheless real for being so, that is the seven sacraments. Through each sacrament the past, the present, and the future are bound together in an efficacious event which of itself is causative of sanctification. In a unique and most beautiful way the Eucharist is the "crown jewel" in this mystical treasure trove at the Catholic's disposal.

If we take to heart the thrust of this book, our spiritual lives will be enhanced and, in the words of the Abbott himself, it will make of us true mystics. Instead of instilling in me a feeling of uncomfortableness, I find that the thought makes me desirous of an ever-deepening emersion into the God-life, which the sacraments promise, especially the Eucharist.

While "A Key to the Doctrine of the Eucharist" is a studious read, it is one well worth the effort. It is a book whose time has surely come. It deserves re-reading to sufficiently plumb its depths. In fact, the Sacrament of the Eucharist demands it.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging But Worth It.......2004-05-31

Vonier's book on the Eucharist is challenging. He writes with a precision that is alien to the written works most Americans have been exposed to. He clarifies with sophistication the Catholic belief in the Real Presence by focusing on sacramentality, avoiding the oversimplistic fashion in which the Real Presence is often talked about. In my opinion, the most compelling chapters are 20 ("Man's Share in the Eucharistic Sacrifice"), 21 ("The Eucharistic Liturgy"), 22 ("The Eucharistic Banquet"), which could stand alone as independent essays. At one point, Abbot Vonier makes a compelling call to become a people of the Eucharist: "If this mystery becomes the constant preoccupation of human society, its daily deed, its chief concern, its highest aspiration, then society is saved" (p. 169). We would become eucharistic people constantly in a state of gratitude to our Creator.
