3 out of 5 stars Difficult Read!.......2007-01-31

Death in the Andes is not an easy read and will not qualify as your easy & interesting read. This is because there are just too many characters that get introduced into the plot all of a sudden.
The interactions between corporal Lituma and his deputy Tomas with a backdrop of remote Andean mountains and villages is the probably the only interesting part of the book. Vargas is able to skillfully shuffle between the past and the present.
This is a very small book, but I am struggling to finish it only because it seems to lack the allure that will keep me hooked late in the night.

4 out of 5 stars Death in the Andes.......2007-01-03

This is a good book. It is not quite as good as Who killed Palomino Molero? by the same author. This is the sequel and as often happens does not exactly live up to the original.

4 out of 5 stars another fine book by Llosa.......2005-11-26

One of Llosa's easier reads and yet still satisfying. Having traveled to Peru last year, the novel resonated for me in its depiction of modern Peru. Even though much has changed since the 90s (when the book takes place) much has remained the same in the Andes in particular it seems.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enjoyable Book - Accuracy Questioned.......2005-11-15

As a work of fiction, I found this book to be incredibly enjoyable to read. I love the mixture of horror and comedy in the book. It shows two totally different aspects of human beings which is what life is really like.

My one caveat about the book is that the author may lead one to believe that all the horrors in Peru were caused by the Shinning Path rebels. However, international groups estimate at least half of the deaths were caused by the government and other right wing paramilitary groups. This aspect of Peru's history is absent here.

3 out of 5 stars not very organized.......2004-06-24

i like writing books of south american writers, but this one is not very organized, story is some parts very strong but then weak in other parts. The author has tried to give a super natural taste to that , but i think he could abbreviate the book a lot
any way what is the problem with sexuality in south america , seems that it is a big issue there.

1 out of 5 stars the boredom was endless and lasted a long time.......2000-01-12

Nothing could have prepared me for the monstrosity I was about to read. This book starts out promisingly but quickly degenerates into the ramblings of a spoiled and inarticulate man. Tierney is repetitive and continuously strays from the topic of religion to that of his own experiences. These experiences are useless, unless the reader plans on scaling large mountains in Peru. Besides this I thought the book was generally awful. Explanations are given numerous times, the author is self-glorifying and useful information is always lacking.

5 out of 5 stars Opinion of its translator into Portuguese.......1998-06-22

There is no doubt that this is a extremely important book to all those who are interested in religion subject as well as worried with the violence wave of our time. The Highest Altar allows a new understanding of human violence and lead us to inquire about the deep reasons of murder. It is a very well written book that should not be absent from everyone library. It should not be out of print; a new edition is necessary. My congratulation to Patrick Tierney for such a marvelous work.

      Book Description

Since prehistoric times, Andean societies have been organized around the ayllu, a grouping of real or ceremonial kinspeople who share labor, resources, and ritual obligations. Many Andean scholars believe that the ayllu is as ancient as Andean culture itself, possibly dating back as far as 6000 B.C., and that it arose to alleviate the hardships of farming in the mountainous Andean environment. In this boldly revisionist book, however, William Isbell persuasively argues that the ayllu developed during the latter half of the Early Intermediate Period (around A.D. 200) as a means of resistance to the process of state formation. Drawing on archaeological evidence, as well as records of Inca life taken from the chroniclers, Isbell asserts that prehistoric ayllus were organized around the veneration of deceased ancestors, whose mummified bodies were housed in open sepulchers, or chullpas, where they could be visited by descendants seeking approval and favors. By charting the temporal and spatial distribution of chullpa ruins, Isbell offers a convincing new explanation of where, when, and why the ayllu developed.

4 out of 5 stars Peru's bizarreness by his best well known writer........1998-10-11

This novel meant the came back from the political to the literary world of Vargas LLosa. The novel tells the story of a Civil Guard, Lituma, that is sent to a post in Naccos, the Andes. Once in there , he will try to solve what happened to three missing men. The novel is an excellent mix of peruvian mythology, Sendero Luminoso and Love.

4 out of 5 stars The dark roots of human society.......2004-01-09

This exploration of human sacrifice meanders a bit, but maintains interest throughout. Perhaps it should have been organized into three parts. Parts 1 and 2 are very anecdotal as author Patrick Tierney gives a first-person account of his adventures in the Andes as he investigated his subject. Part 1 is as much about mountain climbing as human sacrifice. He scaled various peaks to investigate mountain burial sites of Incan child sacrifices. In Part 2, he spends time in the company of modern-day shamans to uncover the truth behind present-day sacrifices, culminating in a lengthy interview with Maximo Coa, a man who is famed for committing many human sacrifices. Part 3 shifts gears completely. Referring to the patterns and motifs of human sacrifice and the mythology surrounding it, he makes a provocative and fascinating case that sacrifices were an integral part of early, developing Christianity and that sublimation of and guilt over this fact has resulted in hundreds of years of anti-Semitism.

If you like historical western romance novels, then you must read this one. I was immediately captivated and tore through the book in essentially one sitting. Excellent character development, great story line, good pace. This book is another one of those "just one more chapter, then I'll go to sleep" reads. Endearing characters you miss after you end the book. Fortunately though, this is the first of three in a series and despite the fact that it is midnight, I will begin "The Texan's Kiss" tonight. I just hope that my copy of "To Wed in Texas" (the 3rd in this series) will arrive in the mail before I finish! I'm glad to have discovered Jodi Thomas and look forward to exploring her other novels.

                    Book Description

By the winner of the Hugo, the Nebula, and the World Fantasy Life Achievement Awards, this latest volume finds Theodore Sturgeon in fine form as he gains recognition for the first time as a literary short story writer. Written between 1957 and 1960, when Sturgeon and his family lived in both America and Grenada, finally settling in Woodstock, New York, these stories reflect his increasing preference for psychology over ray guns. Stories such as "The Man Who Told Lies," "A Touch of Strange," and "It Opens the Sky" show influences as diverse as William Faulkner and John Dos Passos. Always in touch with the zeitgeist, Sturgeon takes on the Russian Sputnik launches of 1957 with "The Man Who Lost the Sea," switching the scene to Mars and injecting his trademark mordancy and vivid wordplay into the proceedings. These mature stories also don't stint on the scares, as "The Graveyard Reader"—one of Boris Karloff's favorite stories—shows. Acclaimed novelist Jonathan Lethem's foreword neatly summarizes Sturgeon's considerable achievement here.
