Book Description
For Davita Chandal, growing up in the New York of the 1930s and '40s is an experience of joy and sadness. Her loving parents, both fervent radicals, fill her with the fiercely bright hope of a new and better world. But as the deprivations of war and depression take a ruthless toll, Davita unexpectedly turns to the Jewish faith that her mother had long ago abandoned, finding there both a solace for her questioning inner pain and a test of her budding spirit of independence.
Customer Reviews:
A Beautiful Work.......2007-07-03
I recently happened upon this work and was impressed by the depth of the writers knowledge and feeling. The sory is about a young girl coming of age in the era which sorrounde the Second World War. It is certainly much more than that as it delves into Religion as well as the biases existing therein concerning women and their ability to be disciminated against because of thrir sex. The story is matefully woven throughout. The characters are axtraordinarily well developed and are allowed to evoke real emotions. Perhaps the only weakness is that the writer attempts to give the reader much information to digest in a number of pages are far too brief. Although not a new book, this stands the test of time well and is a most satisfying work.
THIS BOOK STINKS.......2007-02-05
this book stunk. there was absolutley no plot and it just bores you with page after page of description.
Where do you turn?.......2006-06-08
This is a fabulous novel. The story is a bit long to summarize and I would refer you to the other reviews on this page. I wanted to add a brief thought or two. Davita's parents are of mixed heretage: her mother an orthodox jew from Poland and father a Mayflower decendent. Both have experienced deep personal trauma that has affected their lives and how they decide to deal with the problems of the world around them. Davita's mother survived genoside and rape in a pogrom and her father witnessed a murder during a logging strike in Washington State. Both abandon their backgrounds and look to socialism as the answer to their personal hurts and the world's injustices. Stragely, Davita as a young girl embraces her orthodox background and finds dep solice in it after her father is killed covering the Spanish revolution. She doggedly and unconventionally says Kaddish daily for her father.
Davita's faith ultimately saves her mother as the latter becomes isolated and dissolutioned with the socialism of Stalin. Davita becomes a star student at the Yesheva where she enrolls (and meets Reuben Malter the protagonist of the CHosen and The Promise). Davita seeks from orthodoxy what the men are granted and is denied equal standing both intellectually and religiously. She has blossomed so much that she outgrows the confines of the tradition she loves.
The novel ends with Davita on the margins, entering her teens and facing an important decision of what path this pios and brilliant loving child will take.
We are left wondering about Davita's future that is taken up in a later novel "Old Men at Midnight" where she appears in three stories at different times in her adult life as a foil against which three other main characters are developed. We learn later that she embrasses acadamia.
Upton Sinclair ends his famous novel "The Jungle" (written in the early 1900's) with a cry that socialism is the answer. We see in Davita's harp what Sinclair will ultimately descover for himself decades later that socialism is a dead end and barren as far as meeting basic human spiritual needs.
Potok's powerful novels and his fictional Brooklyn society are the conflicts between the old world traditions and a rapidly changing America. He is a master story teller, writes beautiful prose, writes with sufficient patience and depth that the cultural material is understandable and accessable to all who read his works. His themes are timeless and universal. One day he will be looked upon as an underappreciated great American novelist. Don't miss a single piece of his writing.
Ehh..........2006-03-27
I have read several of Chaim Potok's books. If your are looking to read something of his, I highly reccommend The Chosen and My Name is Asher Lev. This one had some good parts, but several parts that really bothered me. I'd rather not reveal the touching parts (that would spoil part of the book), but the few in there were quite poignant. However, the writing was a little flat, and the author didn't seem to know how to depict people like Christians or Communists properly. It also annoyed me that he threw Reuven Malter (main character from The Chosen) in there at the end (he could have easily come up with a new character!). The ending, to me, seemed a little disappointing in general.
Overall, it was worthwhile, it kept you interested. But it was certainly not a classic like some of his others.
Proletarian means the lowest and poorest.......2006-02-20
Davita had connections to Prince Edward's Island and Maine, but mostly to the many neighborhoods of New York City in which she had lived as a child. There was a harp on the door. Her mother was a social worker and her father was a journalist. They were committed movement people.
While the apartments changed, friends of Davita's parents remained the same. When her mother ws ill following the death of her baby brother, Davita met her Aunt Sarah. She stayed for four weeks. Davita's first name was Ilana. She was called Ilana by her mother.
Jakob Daw, a writer from Austria, was to visit in order to give lectures on Spain. Classmates of Ilana Davita did not agree with her views of Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler. The family rented a cottage in Brooklyn at Sea Gate. Sea Gate was fenced and protected. It was a small world of sand and sea. David Dinn, a boy in an adjacent cottage, was trying to get over the death of his mother. He and his uncle were observant Jews.
Ilana's father was sent to Spain. He died when Guernica was bombed. Ilana Davita shocked the Orthodox Jewish congregation by insisting upon saying Kaddish for her father. Notwithstanidng the fact that this created a political problem for her mother, (religion was considered the opiate of the masses by the comrades), Ilana attended a yeshiva.
The mother remarried. The second husband was the father of David Dinn. When Jakob Daw died Ilana Davita's mother said Kaddish for him. In order to do so she had to climb into a sort of a cage to maintain the necessary separation of male and female worshippers. This disturbed Davita.
The book's manner is understated and realistic. It is suitable for the subject matter of great events and important ideas.

Book Description
It's the last race of the season, and the wheels are smoking and the temperature is rising at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Alexandra Barnaby is NASCAR driver Sam Hooker's raceday spotter, his eye-in-the-sky, telling Hooker when to pass and when to get off the gas. From her vantage point high above the grandstand she's also seeing things going on in the infield that will change her life. Things that will lead to a stolen racecar hauler, a kidnapped Saint Bernard, a bizarre murder, some restless nights under the covers with Hooker, and a reunion with super cigar roller Rosa Florez and the queen of wholesale fruit Felicia Ibarra.
From Miami, Florida to Concord, North Carolina and back to Miami this is an action-packed multi-car crash of shady dealings, stolen technology, drive-thru windows and destruction of personal property. Everything you always wanted to know about righteous indignation, stealing an eighteen-wheeler, stashing a dead body, and sex in the fast lane.
Performed by C.J. Critt

Funny & Fun.......2007-03-13
This was the sequel to Metro Girl. I enjoyed listening to this book. It is about a Nascar Driver and his ex-girlfriend/mechanic/spotter for his races. The action picks up quickly and is basically non-stop! Some of the situations the characters get into are pretty hilarious. There is a little romance/history between Hooker and Barney, but that is not focused on too much. At first Hooker and his friend Gobbles voices annoyed me very much... but if you can get past that part... the book is actually very good! I don't follow Nascar and was still able to enjoy the story. Each of the characters was funny and different. The descriptions of Miami were awesome (made me wish I was there!) but the descriptions of the murdered people were a little too much... it is hard to be completely amused with a story while picturing some of the scenes. Overall, enjoyable story, fun and funny to listen to, and a good sequel to Metro Girl. If there is another book after this one, I'd love to read it or listen to it.
If you like cheating boyfriends, dog poop, annoying characters and drivel this is the book for you.......2006-12-28
If you like juvenile gags and the same lame jokes over and over, you get plenty of that in Motor Mouth. Anyone with a smigden of intelligence will want to put it through the shredder. I think Evanovich was aiming for madcap, but instead Motor Mouth was simply maddening. Weak characters, ridiculous storylines, hackneyed over-used childish pranks and pratfalls.
Hooker, who was so annoying in Metro Girl, was even worse in this book. He actually cheated with on Barney with another woman, but improbable as it may seem for a woman supposedly as strong as Barney, she didn't drop him like a stone. The guy has no integrity, treated Barney like some track bimbo and she still goes ahead and hangs around and sleeps with him. What is it with Janet Evanovich and cheating? She had Stephanie Plum showing no remorse when trying to cheat on Joe in Twelve Sharp. Is she such a fan of infidelity she now considers it second nature?
This book didn't work on any level. The way Barney and Hooker could steal cars, locate microscopic chips and evade the baddies was completely off the credibility scale. The violence was over the top.
It was repetitive, non-stop garbage. The dog poop stuff, especially the bag of dog poop, was disgusting and anyone feeding their dog that rubbish should be sued by the Humane Society. It is as JE thinks her readership are 12 year boys who like vomit and poop.
The NASCAR stuff was boring.
JE churns her books out too quickly, pushing out at least two books a year. This shows as the quality of her work as gone down as the quantity goes up. I would much rather she spend more time on her books like other authors. Let's hope she dumps the Alex Barnaby books and spends more time improving the Plum series.
I only finished this book because I had nothing else to read on a trip. I got this book out the library as I would never buy another Evanovich book after Metro Girl. I wouldn't read another in this series, even a library copy.
Wonderful Narration, Great Story.......2006-11-17
I bought this book on audio and Full Scoop on audio at the same time. Unlike the latest Full book, this book is a great example of why I buy Janet's books rather than go to the library for them. I will keep this audio book in my own library to enjoy over and over again. CJ Critt does a fantastic job with the voices, I laughed so hard when I heard her do Nascar Guy, Hooker. The story is original (if a little far fetched) and fun to listen to. If you are looking for something to make you smile, this is the book.
HUMOR AND HIGH JINKS PLUS FIRST-RATE NARRATION.......2006-11-01
"Motor Mouth," the second in The Barnaby Series, is every bit as exciting and danger packed as the first, "MetroGirl" (2005). There's never a dull moment in the life of Alexandra Barnaby who spends her time at NASCAR races in Florida and North Carolina. There's also never a dull paragraph for listeners as this tale is spun by the very gifted C. J. Critt. One of Evanovich's favorite performers, and for good reason, Critt is well remembered for her narrations of "Back to the Bedroom," "Four to Score," and others.
She knows how to capture a listeners attention and she deftly does it when we hear these first words: "Sometimes there's a decision to be made between winning fairly and cheating for a good cause. And sometimes, in the heat of competition, I've slipped south of fair. So I understand the temptation. But here's the thing about cheating ...don't cheat me. I take it personally."
It's established early on that if Alex Barnaby takes anything personally - look out! The setting is Miami and the scene is the last race of the season. Alex, a spotter for NASCAR driver Sam Hooker, is on task - looking through her binoculars high above the infield. In this case, she's seeing things she may later wish she had not - sightings that soon involve her in mayhem and murders. Of course, Sam is right along with her and there's time for them to connect. (What's a good story without a touch of romance?)
Leave it to Evanovich to provide surprising plot twists including a purloined pooch, and over the top characters such as the redoubtable Felicia Ibarra. This author is a pro at combining humor and high jinks. Highly enjoyable listening!

Book Description
An extraordinary artist with few rivals in his chosen arena, Dan Simmons possesses a restless talent that continually presses boundaries while tantalizing the mind and touching the soul. Now he offers us a superb quintet of novellas -- five dazzling masterworks of speculative fiction, including "Orphans of the Helix," his award-winning return to the Hyperion Universe -- that demonstrates the unique mastery, breathtaking invention, and flawless craftsmanship of one of contemporary fiction's true greats.
Customer Reviews:
Prequels and sequels.......2006-11-14
Some new ground covered and some old ground uncovered. The world of Endymion revisited in a short story and the seeds of the Olympos world uncovered. All from the Simmon's parallax view of the universe he creates. Simmon's introduction to each story both enlighten and befuddle but he does admit to being more comfortable with the worlds of his own creation rather than writing about himself or writing introductions. However, with that aside and despite a tedious story about a mountain climb with a boring alien, the compilation of work is well worth adding to your collection.
A great collection of stories.......2006-07-16
I recently finished Dan Simmons' Worlds Enough and Time, a collection of 5 tales of "speculative fiction" (that's what it says on the cover). As you may know from my review earlier this year of his novel Ilium, I've been a fan of his work for quite some time. He's inventive, and always has interesting, flawed characters.
I quite enjoyed reading these stories. They were all just long enough to read one before sleeping. The stories are:
Looking for Kelly Dahl - one day, while attempting suicide, a teacher's life, and universe, changes
Orphans of the Helix - a return to the Hyperion universe
The Ninth of Av - I noticed this as a kind of prequel to Ilium
On K2 with Kanakaredes - mountain-climbing, with an alien
The End of Gravity - an American investigating, and reminiscing, on the Russian space program
For fans of Simmon's work, this is definitely worth a read!
Words Enough .......2005-11-08
Dan Simmon's writing is always great, even in disposable pulp fiction like his Joe Kurtz novels, and in this volume he's got the goods when it comes to the stories. He chose to include the commentaries for all stories as well and he makes his short and lucid entries interesting and relevant.
Stylistically and thematically the stories are varied- in "Looking for Kelly Dahl" Simmons is looking for Philip K.D. but even with the shades of Ubik, this is a good one; The End of Gravity didn't make any particular impression on me, but it's not bad either.
What is more interesting is the other three stories: The Orphans of Helix, set in the post-world of Simmons' Hyperion series- nice work and a useful thing if you have just finished reading/emerged breathless from Hyperion world and need a fix. The "The Ninth of Av" was at first a strange and confusing tale when I read it, but now, with a benefit of hindsight, I see that it is an essential reading before delving into the world of Illium and Olympos, Simmons' latest saga. And finally, "On K2 with Kanakaredes" is a sci-fi gem, with a big emotional punch; stories don't come better than this.
This collection is a must for Simmons fans, but it works just as well as a standalone, excellent introduction to one of the best writers in the field- though after his excursions into horror, thriller and such, exactly which field it is, it's hard to say at his point. In hard core sci-fi, Simmons holds steady as one of the biggest stars. Even his cover art is slightly improved here- this galactic picture was used in hundreds other works, on a Pearl Jam album cover recently, but it's better than the usual cheapo paintings of the lurid sci-fi nature that the publishers love to slap on Simmons. Put some duck tape on these and keep reading...
Great Stories.......2004-12-15
Dan Simmons has written a masterfull work. I have marked down four stars when I really give it 4 1/2. This is wonderfull to read. Simmons also writes an anecdote to each story about the story or his connection to writing the story. In his anecdotes, you find that he loves where he lives and loves the annual neighborhood get togethers. He also loves writing, but not necessarily the business of writing. Taken together, they add a nice depth to his writing and gives you a greater appreciation to his stories. There are five here and not one of them is a dud. He returns to Hyperion in one of the stories and the reader would enjoy the story more if they had read the series, but the story still stands on its own legs. He also writes about mountain climbing with aliens and the brotherhood that develops with such an activity whether you are human or not. The "End of Gravity" is about an American writer going to Russia to look at their space accompishments. The "Ninth of Av" is about Jewish decendents going through another dark period of history.
If you are new to Dan Simmons, then this is a good book to start with becasue you get a wide variety of his style and abilities. Highly Recommended.
A Simmons fan necessity.......2004-08-21
Overall, if you are a fan of Simmons, this book is a must have as 2 of the stories touch upon worlds seen in his larger works. Specifically "The Ninth of Av" is a prequel to Ilium, and "Orphans of the Helix" is a sequel set in the Hyperion universe. I was not overly impressed by the opening story of "Kelly Dahl" about a man trying to kill himself and an enigmatic former student of his with world changing powers. I never felt for the main character nor did I care if he killed himself or not. "Orphans of the Helix" was a nice revisiting of a far flung colony of Ousters and Templars set many years after the events in the Endymion duology. I thought the resolution of the dilemma in the story was a little forced though, abrupt even. "The Ninth of Av" was a mildly interesting story set just before the Final Fax that is mentioned in Ilium. It sheds some light on those events and flows a little better into its parent universe than "Orphans" which was more of a stand alone story just happening to appear in the Hyperion universe. It made me want to re-read Ilium. "On K2 with Kanakaredes" was a great story about a company of climbers on the slopes of K2 (go figure) who for political reasons must take an alien with them. This was my favorite story out of the 5. I must have missed the point of "The End of Gravity" because it was only average to me. An american writer is sent to Russia for a story on the russian interests in the International Space Station. It shows the russians as proud of their space achievements in a way that America has not been for a long time. More interesting to me and a high point of this book were the anecdotal introductions to each of the stories. They give a glimpse into the life of Simmons that I enjoyed more than some of the stories. I will admit though I am not a huge fan of the shorter fiction. I prefer novel length stories so take this review that that grain of salt. Every once and a while a story really captivates me and makes me remember it, but I can't say that any story in this collection had that effect on my except "K2". So I will agree with a previous reviewer and recommend this to any Simmons fans for sure, but if you are new to him, start with some of his novels which I think are much better (at least the 5 I have read are). I would rate this as 3.5 out of 5.
