Book Description
Padura Fuentes — one of Cuba's best-known and most widely acclaimed writers — has written a first-rate detective story set against the backdrop of Hemingway's Cuba. Part fascinating examination of Hemingway the man in his trying final years and part nifty postmodern procedural, Adios Hemingway will engross Hemingway fans while keeping them in suspense until the final pages.

For Hemingway aficionados only.......2006-11-24
This mystery novel by a popular Cuban writer involves a dead body discovered on Hemingway's property (Finca Vigia) in Cuba. The hero, a retired police inspector, had once been a Hemingway fan but has become disillusioned about the famous writer for various reasons. The novel proceeds somewhat ploddingly as the inspector has to be persuaded to take the case; he then wanders around visting his old "colorful' friends and finally makes it to the Villa itself (now a museum. The novel takes place in the present. The body, recently exhumed, has been in the ground many years. Hemingway himself is presented in flashbacks). Even though he has been dead these many years, Hemingway becomes a suspect in the killing. The novel wanders to an end and features an amusing take on Ava Gardner's "knickers."
It's hard to tell if the novel is well written because the translation is execrable. One sample: "He went to the bathroom adjoining his bedroom and opened his flies." I gave it three stars because I am a Hemingway fan and the passages describing the great writer's last days in Cuba, his health problems , his relations with the natives were of interest.
Clever and enjoyable for those who appreciate Papa .......2006-05-31
The Cuban atmospherics and the Hemingwayesque mixture of facts and myths make for a quick uncomplicated mystery. Who would not want to know how Ava Gardner's black panties found their way into this tale? Or, would you not want to entertain a reason
why Papa hurriedly left the island to find his way to suicide in Ketchum, Idaho? Read it as fiction, enjoy it and let your mind wander to the possibilities.
Different.......2006-03-12
This is the first book I've read by Fuentes. It's short, quite delightful but, as the writer explains in the foreward, more about Hemingway in his last days in Cuba than a detective story. I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more had this not been the first time I'm reading Fuentes.
Perspectives on Papa.......2005-12-22
Not having read any Cuban fiction, I gave this a try.
It took me in, not only to Cuban life (for which I craved more description) but to the Hemingway portrait. It's been years since I've read a Hemingway novel or a bio. (although I read one on Hadley last year that was very kind to him). The portrait that is presented (through a clever weaving of past and present) is plausible to the mystery and to the man himself.
Credit must be given to the translator, as well as a very creative author. Like a previous Amazon reviewer, I'd like to read more of this author.
Aged Hemingway in Pre-Revolution Cuba Sets Murder Mystery in Motion.......2005-09-20
Murder mysteries are generally not my cup of tea, but this strong, evocative novel by Leonardo Padura Fuentes is a wonderful find. An honestly rendered story set in the last days of the Batista era in Cuba, the relatively short book - just 240 pages - has a genuinely timeless quality simply because Fuentes does not try to recreate a country on the brink of revolution. Instead he re-imagines a larger-than-life literary figure, Ernest Hemingway, within the context of a complex murder case that my implicate the author.
The protagonist is former policeman Mario Conde, who has become a private detective where there is ironically no privacy. There is a skeleton found entwined in the root structure of an ancient mango tree that is of course, on the writer's former property outside Havana. Hemingway's connections with Cuba are well known, so Fuentes takes full advantage of this historical reality within the narrative and adds some political intrigue showing that the skeleton is that of a vanished FBI agent. This dimension brings an almost-"Chinatown" like sense of duplicity and identity crisis that brings Conde to task by his own government.
Fuentes dexterously interweaves chapters about the murder investigation with others narrated from Hemingway's perspective. He accurately mimics the legend's testosterone-heavy writing style just short of parody, as the details of the fateful night in October 1958 unfold. Throughout, Hemingway is portrayed as arrogant, alcoholic, and self-centered to the point of paranoia and driven by a need to violate all moral codes at first encounter. Implicating the master author in the murder provides fascinating albeit fictionalized insight into what led the author to suicide shortly thereafter.
This is a sharp, thoughtful and sometimes funny thriller that maintains its suspense consistently but never at the expense of character development or its specific historical setting at least until the lyrical ending. John King has done a mostly admirable job in translating Fuentes' original Spanish text by ensuring the gently evocative and subtly ironic tone remains intact.

Customer Reviews:
Am I missing something?.......2006-07-12
I cannot believe this book has received an average of five stars. Am I missing something? I am a huge fan of romance novels and very discriminating when it comes to a story line. The main characters are at least somewhat feasible, but Conrad and Thelma? Come on! They didn't never have really talked to each other and then suddenly they supposedly fell in love with each other in about a week? And the similes! Dear god, if I had to read one more simile I was going to tear my eyes out. Maybe it's just me (after all, I am a northerner), but I find it hard to believe that such phrases as " hotter than a june bug in july" and "happier than pigs in mud" are tacked onto nearly EVERY sentence spoken by a southerner. Maybe I am wrong about that, but I didn't think this book was that great.

Architect Ryan O'Fallon needs to leave San Diego and return home to Tennessee to help in a family emergency. But his co-worker Effie Wilson isn't about to let him finish their mall plans on his own and take all the credit! She's going with him. What happens when they take a break from their busy big-city lives?
'TIL THERE WAS U is the first book in Dianne Castell's FOUR O'FALLONS AND A BABY series. It's off to a great start! Plenty of steam, funny characters and cleverly interwoven storylines add up to a captivating book that's hard to put down. I loved watching Ryan and Effie shed their California habits as they fit right into the O'Fallon's Landing lifestyle. I hoped they would both come to the same conclusion about what they want most in their lives. I enjoyed the extensive secondary romance between Thelma McAllister and Conrad Hastings, too. I'm looking forward to meeting more of the O'Fallon brothers as the series continues. And I can't wait to find out the full story behind baby Bonnie!
Sexy Romantic Comedy Kicks Off Trilogy.......2005-11-16
With her trademark humor and three-dimensional characters, Dianne Castell launches her Kensington Brava "O'Fallon Family" trilogy with the winning `Til There Was U. Turning the popular "secret baby" plot on its ear, Castell presents us with a secret mother instead, an adorable if vocal baby girl, and the O'Fallon patriarch and his three hunky sons. `Til There Was U features Ryan O'Fallon, who returns to his rural Tennessee home to help his father find the missing mother of baby Bonnie. Ryan's San Diego architectural firm coworker, Effie Wilson, comes along so they can complete a pressing project. An attraction that simmered in California ignites in the sultry nights along the Mississippi River, and suddenly there's a lot more between Ryan and Effie than blue prints and deadlines. Complicating matters are sinister men who are also searching for Bonnie's mom and won't stop at murder to locate her - a plot line that carries the reader on to the second installment in the series. As a bonus to this engaging story, Castell offers a secondary romance - a moving if unlikely pairing of a "wrong-side-of-the-levee" heroine and a seemingly irredeemable, spoiled-snob hero. The next book, The Way U Look Tonight, can't arrive soon enough for me!
Wonderful Romantic Comedy!.......2005-11-14
Ryan O'Fallon and Effie Wilson deserve this delightfully sexy story! A fast-paced book, laugh-out-loud funny, and must go on your keeper shelf! I look forward to more of Dianne Castell's books.
entertaining contemporary romance .......2005-10-25
In Tennessee, fifty-two year old Rory O'Fallon knows the moment he sees the infant on his porch that he sired her; he also believes the mother, whom he loves, is in trouble to abandon her daughter Bonnie like this. Finally Rory realizes that he cannot help his beloved Mimi DuPont without help; he tells the local paper that his son Ryan is the father until he can insure that his former office manager is safe.
Rory calls his son in San Diego architect Ryan O'Fallon, whose legendary love life process time is the subject of office pools. In fact his greatest rival at Designs Unlimited Effie Wilson has won the last two pools about Ryan's love life (or lack of) as she thinks she knows why he is slumping and why the stud sweats when she is near him. However, Ryan must go home as his dad needs him even while working a project with Effie. In O'Fallon's Landing, Effie completes her magic as her hunk finds he cannot resist her lure.
Dianne Castell writes an entertaining contemporary romance with a bit of a mystery that brings the lead pair to his hometown though hiding the truth about Bonnie seems odd even rationalized as a safety measure. Effie is terrific as she knows she loves the womanizing Ryan, who must choose between the perfect woman and perfect job. Fans will appreciate this fine tale and look forward to novels starring his brothers, Keefe the soap opera star and Quaid the search and rescue expert in Kodiak, Alaska.

Book Description
The eagerly awaited continuation
of HOMECOMING and THE FARTHER SHORE!
Captain Chakotay is ready to prove himself as the new commanding officer of the Starship Voyager -- but skeptics back at Starfleet Command are watching him closely for any sign that he will revert to his renegade Maquis ways. His first mission as captain, to transport a group of displaced colonists back to their home planet of Loran II, seems easy enough: make sure the planet is safe for colonization, unload the settlers, and head back to Earth. He even has an extra reason to enjoy the trip -- his sister, Sekaya, has joined the mission as a spiritual advisor to the gentle, peace-loving colonists.
But when the crew arrives at Loran II, they discover a mysterious storm, an ominously deserted settlement -- and a hidden threat from Chakotay's past that could destroy them all. Will Chakotay's first mission as captain of Voyager also be his last?

The journey continues.......2007-01-30
I've been a fan of Voyager since the begining, and am glad to see that it doesn't end here, Voyager will continue on in some form or rather. Would love to see a Voyager movie in the distant future as there is the possiblity.
Anyway the book was fantastic continuing on from a story from the 2nd season, this sees Chakotay experiening pieces from the past as well as experincing challanges as USS Voyager's newly appointed captain. All I can say id this id good, you have to read this to find out more. Can't wait for book 2
Surprise Find.......2006-11-09
I found this book on the returns trolley at my local library and decided to borrow it for a quick read.
It delivered a quick read I had chewed through it in a couple of days.
Having not had the opportunity to read the previous homecoming books was no impediment to my understanding and enjoyment of this story.
I liked revisiting old Voyager characters and meeting new ones, but my beef with the book is that it didn't come to a very satisfactory conclusion.
I was about 12 pages out from the end when I realized that there were too few pages for the book to reach the climax that it took way too long building up to.
I don't like cliff hanger endings and this book ended on one which, whilst it made me keen to return to my library in search of book two also pissed this aspiring novelist right off as having broken one of the cardinal rules of writing ie "finish what you started!"
A good one to slip in your suitcase for a weekend away, otherwise.
Much better than Homecoming.......2006-10-10
Like the new Star Trek Titan novels, our other favourite First Officer gets a well-deserved promotion to Captain of USS Voyager. And brings along plenty of old and new interesting characters for the ride. We are introduced to Chakotay's sister Sekaya - and congratulations to whomever chose Sekaya's portrait on the book's front cover - yowsers! Apart from Chakotay, the spotlight is also focused on Dr. Jarem Kaz, the new Trill Chief Medical Officer, who has quite a few secrets of his own he needs to deal with. Also interesting and believable is the unresolved tension between the old Voyager crew and the veterans of the Dominion War. This kind of interpersonal conflict is much more believable than the conspiracy-fuelled actions of the previous Homecoming duology.
The first half- to three-quarters of the book is revisiting old characters and introducing new ones. Thats fine by me, as Christie Golden has a much more confident grasp of the characters by now. The result is a much better written book with more believable character motivations than what transpired in Homecoming. I still didn't enjoy these as much as the Star Trek Titan novels, but its still worth a read to revisit old friends. And I hope to see more adventures of the new Voyager in the future.
Post VoyagerNovel.......2006-08-13
Though I haven't gotten to read it yet I am very happy that this series of novels taks place AFTER Voyager's return to the Delta Quadrant. I always thought a movie should be made but a series in books is just fine.
ST: Voyager, Spirit Walk, Book 1, Old Wounds.......2006-08-05
Star Trek: Voyager, Spirit Walk, Book 1, Old Wounds written by Christie Golden is a continuation of the Voyager re-launch series and it is a wonderful adventure, indeed.
Golden takes the reader forward in this Voyager series book and catapultes the reader forward in the continuing story. The book takes off where the other re-launch seriers books have left off, but it is not necessary to read them to enjoy this story. Golden does a good job with this story to further this Voyager adventure. Captain Janeway is now an Admiril with Starfleet and fights for Chakotay to be Voyager's next Captain and she is successful.
"Old Wounds" is the first Voyager adventure with Chakotay as its new Captain, but he is being watched by Starfleet Command closely. All of the characters from Voyagers past play a roll in this book to keep the reader stable in the Voyager storyline, but Golden adds new characters to the Voyager compliment as well as the new refit of Voyager itself.
Golden uses "Old WOunds" as an introduction for new characters and sets the story for things to come as the reader progresses through the story. The set-up is told well and sets the mood for the book. Things heat up as Voyager reaches the planet of Loren II, the former home of the colonists that had to leave due to Loren II being ceded to the Cardassians during the Dominion War. But when the crew arrives at Loren II, things are not what they seem and a mystery develops and makes the story intriguing with a sprinkle of mystery.
"Old Wounds" brings the realm of the spirit world to the fore front, making for some interesting reading and setting the story's tone. "Old Wounds" is a tale that the reader will enjoy very much. There's not much action in this first story, but it sets the tenor for the series and you get really fimilar whin the characters, so the characterization is done well.
I enjoyed "Old Wounds" as a story told well with excellent characterization, so I gave this book a solid five stars for that reason. I'm looking forward to the second book in this series "Enemy of my Enemy" to carry to story to its conclusion. There is a cliff-hanger of an ending in "Old Wounds" making the reader want to get the second book.

Brief and Informative.......2004-01-07
Designing and Older Adult Ministry is part of the United Methodist Church's effort to help congregations better serve older adults. While there are a fair number of Methodist-specific references (e.g. quotes from the Book of Discipline), as a non-Methodist, I still found this to be a valuable resource.
The book explores basic issues such as the needs of older adults and reasons ways congregations fail to understand and meet these needs. It also provides a sample process for developing an older adult ministry and examples of effective ministries. A useful list of resources and an extensive set of assessments and sample forms are also included.
While Gentzler does not explore subjects in great depth, the short, easy-to-read sections both enlighten and challenge. Portions of the book could be used as discussion pieces with groups of congregants or among a large staff.
Whether you are seeking to develop an older adult ministry in your congregation or to improve an existing ministry, you will certainly find something useful in Designing and Older Adult Ministry.
