Book Description

A hauntingly beautiful, wickedly funny, and devastatingly moving novel of innocence and dreams that announces the arrival of a major new talent to the literary scene

In the attic room at 26 Waifer Avenue, identical twins Georgia and Bessi Hunter share nectarines and forge their identities, while escaping from the sadness and danger that inhabit the floors below. But innocence lasts for only so long—and dreams, no matter how vivid and powerful, cannot slow the relentless incursion of the real world.

4 out of 5 stars Girls book grabbed a guy.......2007-03-12

I listened to this on tape, read by the amazing Adjoa Andoh. I don't know if I would have appreciated all the playful language if I had been reading silently. The language, the view through children's viewpoints (which not many of us actually grow out of anyway, the great story telling all made me keep listening. The troubles near the end may disturb ome readers, but, in spite of mystical touches, the difficulties of the lives are not treated fancifully. I was quite interested in the characters in spite of their great differences from my milieu.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful FInd!.......2007-02-04

I found this book rather randomly, as I was browsing bookshelves in no particular order, and I reading it made me very grateful that I still find the time to visit brick & mortar bookstores!

Even though this is the story of two biracial girls living in London, even though their Nigerian roots are strong, Evans never makes the novel about race. Rather, being biracial, having a Nigerian mother who believes in spirits, these are important, influential parts of who they are. Its not portray as an obstacle or a difficulty, which I appreciated. But even better than this story of a family of women with exceptional connections and insight into the human spirit and across continents and physical boundaries, the language is this novel is what makes it stand out. The language of this novel is what makes it move. I think I will be dreaming of the last few chapters, "the last bit," as Evans might say, for days.

The characters were real and interesting, the story was moving, and the writing just took my breath away. Evans has a real gift for poetic prose and imagery. The clash of cultures especially vivid, and the pain and confusion of depression -- I just can't even imagine how Evans was able to portray it so vividly. I can't wait for more.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2006-06-13

As a voracious reader, 26a stopped me in my tracks. I would have to stop reading it to savor the richness and then quickly return to it. The fluency and reality of this novel blew me away. How could someone as young as Ms. Evans write so exquisitely? The story line I could relate to even though I'm not British nor have I been to Niger nor have I a twin. But I believed every character. Ms. Evans brought the characters to life. So often authors forget about the minor characters once they are introduced, but Kemy was well-rounded. Errol and Dean instantly came to life. I can't wait for the next novel. My hat goes off to Diana Evans!

4 out of 5 stars A moving novel that also manages to deliver a tough message.......2006-03-14

Excellent! Diana Evans's debut novel is an lyrical combination of myth, beauty, plus hard and sad reality.

Wonderfully written, the characters draw you in and pull at your heart.

A moving novel that also manages to deliver a tough message: what can happen when the beauty of childhood is twisted by abuse.

Can be appreciated by readers of all races, nationalities...

Loved it!

2 out of 5 stars Boring, sad, meandering, couldn't finish it..........2005-12-04

I never give up on a book, but this one just lost me. I got through 3/4 of it, and just gave up. The characters seemed very one-dimensional to me, they grew without growing if that makes sense. I couldn't bear another drunken father story, or mother talking to herself (but really to her mother who's back in Nigeria) or the girls working through problem after problem with no real resolution. I felt like they were hamsters on a wheel, as was I for reading the same thing over and over. Finally I jumped off the wheel and moved on. Thank God. I was really disappointed because I feel the author had a story there, and I had read positive reviews. Oh well. Maybe someone else can enlighten me, or maybe her next novel will show me how wrong I am.

A bold new breed of woman . . . defiant, passionate, beautiful tawny-haired Rosalee challenged the dangers of the rugged Colorado mountains with her courage, her rifle, and her heart. Daring to carve a home from the wilderness for her young sister and brother, she longed for a rough-riding frontiersman strong enough to match her wild spirit without taking away her freedom or her dreams. Then one starless night he came to her cabin door--a stranger of towering strength, handsome and powerful, his dark eyes ablaze with desire from the first moment they met. Here was a man to walk beside, not behind . . . a man able to ignite ecstasy's smoldering fires . . . an outcast she would defy the world to love with the fury of the restless wind.

5 out of 5 stars Pride and prejudice..........2002-03-29

Pride and prejudice would also have been a fitting name for this story. Poor Logan spent his entire life being shunned by the white people, because of his Indian blood. Labeled a half-breed, he's constantly given a cruel reception everywhere he goes. Then one rainy night he shows up at Rosalee's home, needing shelter for his dying mother.

From then on, the two are drawn to each other... and Logan finds the one person in his life that didn't even consider his heritage or the consequences of their romance.

As much as Logan wants to give into the love he has for Rosalee, he doesn't want her to live to resent him, when she is surely shunned by the white people. Rosalee must fight through the stubborness of Logan, and show him he does want to give into his feelings.

In addition, Logan and Rosalee - along with Rosalee's siblings and father, are suddenly facing serious danger by the huge landowner of the town. Logan has his own reasons for taunting this landowner and purchasing the land bordering his, that he so desperately wants for himself. Mr. Clayhill, the landowner, will stop at nothing to get what he wants... and the townspeople simply look away, not wanting to get involved and endanger their own family.

From beginning to end, it's almost impossible to see a way out for Logan and Rosalee... each small victory is overshadowed by a much bigger price. Along the way, they make some unlikely friends... including Cooper Parnell, who will prove to be much more to them by the end.

Rosalee and Logan are wonderful characters, and I loved reading this story. Rosalee Spurlock is sweet and beautiful and loving. Logan Horn is strong and handsome, but emotionally vulnerable under the surface.

I was thrilled to see the next book in this trilogy will be the story of Cooper Parnell.

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Romance.......2000-08-25

Yummy. Absolutely yummy. I sat down one day with a blanket and coffe and just didn't stop reading. I maneged to fall in love with Logan while I was at it. Wonderful charactors, wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars A wild romp through the old West........1998-11-20

When Logan, a half-breed, finds his way to Rosalie's doorstep carrying his dying mother in his arms, she can hardly refuse, and she's drawn to him even then. Later, when he arrives at her door bloody and beaten by a Adam Cahill's henchmen, she cares for him. Logan was resigned to living alone, his indian blood made him a target, but Rosalie found her way into his heart, and was determined to stay by his side, no matter what the townspeople said. With unwavering courage and a group of loyal friends, Rosalie and Logan would face the challenge of their lives when he's accused of attacking Adam Cahill's beautiful, deceitful stepdaughter, Della. I really enjoyed this book more than the following stories Wayward Wind and Wind of Promise. The author showed how people can come together in the face of prejudice and injustice. I especially liked the fiesty Minnie, one of the supporting characters.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, good.......2006-06-16

Cecily Landsdowne and Ransom Tremayne are an unlikely pair who meet during a series of circumstances while Cecily is in London for a Season. They are forced to confront the myriad of feelings between them in order to solve the problems that arise.

I thought the book was well-written and the characters were believable and thoroughly built. Of course, it is also full of the unlikely coincidences that tend to be a trademark of the genre, but in general, definitely worth the read.

3 out of 5 stars Book Description.......2005-08-23

Lady Cecily Lansdowne was the exquisite jewel of London society, but it was Captain Ransom Tremayne who ignited her soul with the first stirrings of a woman's passion. And it was Cecily's fierce innocence that drew the rakish Ransom into a tender love unlike any he had ever known.

5 out of 5 stars Winds of Passion.......2000-06-01

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was enchanting and captivating, making me turn the pages until it was over, and wish for more. Lady Cecily is an exciting and innocently charming character who captivates from the beginning, while handsome Captain Ransom Tremayne is seductive and alluring as he falls for Cecily's charms, and she looses her heart to him. This book intrigued and amused me from the start by it's wonderful twists and turns, and the forces that stood between Cecily and Ransom, and the love that conquered all.

        Book Description

One can not understand the Sixties without understanding the Fifties. The Fifties were the first time the American youth had excess freedom. Before the 50's they worked on the family farm; dusk till dawn, slaved in the sweat shops, 12 ours a day, six days a week; starved in the depression; and fought not knowing it they would be alive the next day in World War II and the Korean War. Than, suddenly, came the fifties. First there were the beatniks lead by their spiritual leader Williams Burrough, than the "bad boys of rock and roll Elvis, Johnny Cochran, and Jerry Lee Lewis prevailed. This excess freedom, led to freedom to think, freedom to question, freedom to challenge. In the sixties, the peaceful non-violent Civil Rights Movement, progressed to the Black Power and the Black Panthers. The Civil Rights Movement was followed by the creeping involvement in Vietnam, first with military advisors, than massive troop deployments to Vietnam resulting in death, violence, destruction, and . then disillusion. And complementing the war, initially, the educational teach-ins led to massive antiwar demonstrations, to the Weathermen busting windows on Michigan Ave and planting bombs in the Capital. This all digressed to the " second civil war" which recently resurfaced with the Iraq War, I afraid now is progressing to the "third civil war". Throughout the book we follow the characters lives from romantic innocence to reality to Expressionism. Some fighting in Vietnam, some protesting the war, some marching for civil rights, friendships destroyed and than repaired. Some lives lost, some destroyed, some survived, but all caught up in the hubris characterized by a gross failure of governmental leadership. Those betrayed the most have their names on a black granite wall in Washington DC.

2 out of 5 stars If angst is what you're going for..........2007-08-06

Let me start with the fact that I loved the first Stardoc Novel. The next was good, but less so. The same with the next and now we get to Shockball. For a scifi book, there is a startling lack of your typical space saga while human alien hybrids and a fictional sport seem to be the only reminders that the book is set in the future. Cherijo manages to find a disease that has long since been extinct, which of course means it is a current day disease.

I liked Reever the best in this novel compared to the other three books, however, that was not enough to save the book from overall repetitive storytelling. I personally have had enough of the angst. We get it, Chreijo has a awesome immune system so can be tortured and recover. It seems all that happened in the last book was that she was tortured and then escaped. The same happens here.

The characters have potential, but instead we are treated to the soap opera angsty life of Cherijo.

                3 out of 5 stars Series takes a detour..........2007-02-15

On the one hand, there's a whole can of weird going on in book four, here. There's some stuff on child molestation and rape that, well, kinda makes you wonder about the author's own history in a sad sort of way. There's also some stuff in here covering Native American future-culture that seems handled strangely. And the beginning is about as predicable as it gets. (If your arch-nemesis hands you a starship to get away in... DUH!). The setting itself is rather unique, I disagree with those who say an underground setting can't be useful.

Some of the characters also take some strange detours... Reever, her husband, becomes a sports nut, for instance. A break from his role as slaver in the last book.

But it is one of these detours that saves the book as a whole. Througout this series, the clever settings, plot twists, good concepts and developed secondary characters have shined in spite of the main character, who is usually just a pack of one-liners and snotty God-complex. Here, she starts to show the edges of some actual depth. Perhaps some maturity may be starting to leak through. Suddenly she is less window dressing and more person, in this one.

The setting and secondary characters in this one suddenly seem aimed at back-dropping this deepening in Cherijo's character. It is a pity that so many of the other characters in this story seemed to loose their depth and become one-dimensional to support her. Cherijo's father's character could have been better developed before he dies in this one, and her husband could have opened up more to her. So much could have been, in this one, but wasn't.

Of them all, this is probably my least, and most, favorite, for different reasons.

2 out of 5 stars skip this one.......2005-03-19

                Ok here's what you do.
Go to the local book store, get a copy of this useless book and read the first couple of chapters and the last few. As long as you forget about the rest of this waste of paper the Stardoc series as a whole will still hold a high place in your memory.

                1 out of 5 stars ?.......2004-03-05

What happened to the series??? Yes, there's a plot, yes, we get new stuff revealed about Cherijo, but...it feels like nothing major happened. It feels like I've been stuck in a big hole in the ground the entire novel. There is no real forward progression of characters, of ideas, of feelings. It is the same stuff again, but this time on Earth. Where it's evidently a lot more boring.

There was a lot of potential in Cherijo dealing with her father. And it is mostly wasted. I can't tell you how disappointing it is to discover that she's not so unique. And soon after getting into the lab, she escapes, and spends a good chunk of time underground. Jules Verne did a great science fiction book about being underground. He was able to pull it off. Most writers since then have realized it's pretty hard to make that interesting.

And, Wow, Ick! I *don't* want to hear about vivid descriptions of rapes and child molestation. I read novels for enjoyment, and enlightenment. Not to be disgusted.

There's a fifth book out there in the series, which reveals the final details about Cherijo's life, beyond what her father did. I'm not going to bother to buy it. At this point, I've been too disappointed, and too bored, by the last two novels. The investment I made in the character in the first two novels doesn't carry me over into any further interest in her.

4 out of 5 stars Cherijo continues her search for who, and what, she is..........2003-12-09

Fourth book in the Stardoc series. This is a continuing story, and I very much recommend that you start with the first book, Stardoc, and read the sequels in order: Stardoc, Beyond Vallarean, Endurance, then Shockball. If you haven't, the rest of this review will contain spoilers for the first three.

Again, I was a bit disappointed with Shockball, but only because the first two books were so very good. Shockball continues the adventures of Cherijo Grey Veil Torin, a genetically engineered human who is being pursued by her creator/father throughout the galaxy. After escaping the Hsktskt in Endurance, Cherijo finds herself surrendering to her father in order to keep the peace once again, but this time her husband Duncan is with her. After enduring many brutal hours of testing, she is miraculously rescued by an odd little man who takes her though miles of underground tunnels to his tribe that lives beneath the ground in caverns.

Cherijo discovers she is not so much rescued as she is kidnapped by these strange people, half Indian and half alien.
Again, I found this book to be a step down from the first two in the series, there are not many aliens, as Cherijo spends most of her time underground with the half breeds; and not much titillating space travel either.

Dhreen re-enters her life, finding her in the tunnels and once again helping her out, though this time she trusts him much less. She also discovers that experiments A through I were not destroyed as Joseph Grey Veil had told her, and also discovers that the reason Joe has pursued her so heavily throughout the galaxy is that he intended her to be his mate all along.

Cherijo patches up patients, stops another outbreak, and develops her relationship with her husband Duncan who is forced to participate in the Shockball contests and discovers he actually enjoys the physical competition. But the story seemed almost blasé, missing the mystery of the aliens and the excitement Cherijo stretching her capabilities to the fullest.

I have really enjoyed this series, but I am left hoping that the fifth book brings back the old Cherijo and the old mystery and excitement that made this such a special and unique reading journey.

This book has been an amazing gift for me. I'm a Christian who thought I knew how to forgive until I was offended beyond my wildest dreams and struggled with anger, bitterness and confusion that led me to read the book. The order of chapters is such that a concept in one chapter builds up to the next. The first 3 chapters allows one to examine the wrong that has been done and acknowledge it for what it is; a violation against one's convictions, something hurtful. There are great tips that allow one to examine and accept feelings of anger and disappointment. The chapters that follow give guidance on how to safely release the negative feelings, how to give up bitterness, give up judging the wrongdoer. There's even a chapter on how to confront if that's needed. The beauty of the book is the acknowledgement of ones feelings, explaining why we need to allow ourselves to be angry and grieve and eventually having dealt with our feelings, the book empowers us with the knowledge that first forgiveness is a choice and it then offers practical tips on how to do it. One of the most annoying things for me is being put down or minimized. The book offers tips on how to deal with that by embracing equality, being assertive and embracing humility. The case studies were excellent and in most cases I could relate to them and it made the book even more interesting.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting definitions of "scholarship" and "credible"..........2003-12-06

This is a review of a review...

                  >...too much reference to God; thereby, losing all scholarly credibility <

I see, so any Thiestic based scholarship is, therefore, uncredible? I suppose we shall have to discard the great body of world (not just Western European - WORLD) thought.

                  >...one of the reasons a person should forgive is because: "Lest you conclude that we endorse not forgiving, let us strongly state that we believe forgiveness is right because it is part of the godly life taught and lived by Christ." page 14 <

Is it a secret to ANYONE that Minirith-Meyers is a Christian practice? I would think that this is common knowledge by now. The tone of the reviewer is that they are well schooled and knowledgeable however this "little" fact somehow eluded them.

Interesting, when one is questioning another's "credibility".

                  >What if the reader (such as myself) is NOT a Christian. Then if one does not believe in God or Christ, this line of reasoning is worthless and not convincing to the reader <

Glad to see that you're so open minded! Apparently in the reviewer's mind any thing that is not within the reviwer narrow non-Thiestic secularist world-view is not worth considering. Now that's what I call great scholarship! (not!)

                  >The book is filled with reference to God and Christ and the Bible; thereby, negating any objective clinical scholarly findings they may pose in this book <

I rest my case. The reviewer would do well to evaluate their narrow and limited enlightenment based modernist world-view. This form of "scholarship" has been tried and proven inadequete for the answers that man has sought since time eternal.

I DO wonder what cave or tower (ivory no doubt in any case) this reviewer has been hiding in. He should try joining us here in the 21st century sometime!

1 out of 5 stars Too Much Reference to God and Christ... Loses Credibility.......2003-01-07

There are some good psychological explanations of the necessary steps towards forgiveness. However, I found the book to have too much reference to God; thereby, losing all scholarly credibility.

The authors hypothesize, that one of the reasons a person should forgive is because: "Lest you conclude that we endorse not forgiving, let us strongly state that we believe forgiveness is right because it is part of the godly life taught and lived by Christ." page 14

What if the reader (such as myself) is NOT a Christian. Then if one does not believe in God or Christ, this line of reasoning is worthless and not convincing to the reader.

The book is filled with reference to God and Christ and the Bible; thereby, negating any objective clinical scholarly findings they may pose in this book.

This book is a terrible disappointment

3 out of 5 stars Too many words, not enough room to write.......2002-04-19

For a workbook, I feel this book was just to wordy. It is well organized, but I think it would have worked better as a book about forgiveness and then a workbook with the questions.

Forgiveness is a Choice would be my choice if you are looking for a book to work through forgiving someone.

This is another one of the books of Paul Ferrini, I recently completed reading. After finding his work, I seem to want to read everything he has ever written. He is an important modern-day poet. His writing is beautiful prose to me. There is wisdom and truth in his work that is easy to assimilate, for me personally. I believe I was searching not to understand forgiveness for others, but to find forgiveness for myself, when I chose this book. I was looking for forgiveness for my own transgressions against myself and I believe I found it here. I was changed after reading this book. What is really unusual, is that I feel that way, after each book I complete, that he has written. We must be on eachother's spiritual path, our paths crossing at this time. Paul Ferrini, how did you learn all of these things? Each book I have read, I've had to pass along to a friend afterword because of the value I've gained from his work. He may become a most important author in the world. I feel honored to have found his work and heard his message. If you are seeking a teacher of love and spirituality, he will not disappoint you.

5 out of 5 stars All about me.......1999-06-12

I learned more than I ever wanted to know about myself by reading this book. The friend who gave it to me warned me that I would want to stop reading it. I did have to stop reading a few times and talk it out with her. It gave me an insight into myself and my attitude and definition of forgiveness I had never even imagined before. It has given me very useful tools that work. I will highly recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with forgiveness.
