Winner of the National Book Award in 1985, White Noise is the story of Jack and Babette and their children from their six or so various marriages. They live in a college town where Jack is Professor of Hitler Studies (and conceals the fact that he does not speak a word of German), and Babette teaches posture and volunteers by reading from the tabloids to a group of elderly shut-ins. They are happy enough until a deadly toxic accident and Babette's addiction to an experimental drug make Jake question everything. White Noise is considered a postmodern classic and its unfolding of themes of consumerism, family and divorce, and technology as a deadly threat have attracted the attention of literary scholars since its publication. This Viking Critical Library edition, prepared by scholar Mark Osteen, is the only edition of White Noise that contains the entire text along with an extensive critical apparatus, including a critical introduction, selected essays on the author, the work and its themes, reviews, a chronology of DeLillo's life and work, a list of discussion topics, and a selected bibliography.

This book provides a critical look at the world of postmodern culture. It gives perspective which is not easy to find and also provides a critique in non-academic language, a helpful addition to any library.
Get this edition!.......2004-11-25
I've sometimes asked myself why I don't get a library card and save the money I spend buying books. This book answered that question, because the reviews and essays featured in this edition provided such insight and enlightenment that I was inspired to return to the novel again and again for a more penetrating read.
The novel itself is beautifully, brilliantly written; DeLillo is a master ironist. Though I thoroughly enjoyed the novel the first time, I highly recommend revisiting it after reading the critical essays (which were so informative that they were quite enjoyable reads themselves).
If you're going to read White Noise outside of a college class, this is the edition you should get.
Witty.......2003-08-06
This book was required reading in my college literature class at Auburn University. I enjoyed this book more than any of the other books required (Jane Eyre, Madame Bovary, Gulliver's Travels, etc). This book gave excellent descriptions and amazing character development. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Should we be laughing?.......2002-05-10
This book has a very humorous touch to it, while questioning our culture. The book is the story of a typical family, living in this commercialistic society. It shows that our lives' are based on what the media tells us. It's strange that a book that questions so much about the way we live can also be comedic, but it does so very nicely. Why? Because Don DeLillo is a genius. He does not act as though the concepts he writes about are very important. His humor is comparable to those of us who can't stop laughing at funerals, or roar when someone trips and falls. This book is indeed a trip!
Great novel for English classes.......2002-05-09
White Noise by Don Delillo was a book that should be read by all ages. It's basic concepts that were brought out were the acts of consumerism and death. There was also some sex involved in there too. As you can see, a perfect book for the growing college student. I also liked how Delillo brought in some humorous moments when they were during his grocery shopping and watching television. This novel basically describes the typical American family and shows how this family is just as normal as the rest of us, but shows the side we never really see. I particularly like how Delillo displays Jack as this bizarre man who really focuses on death. He can't help but think about it. I really liked him in this novel because he reminds me of myself as I walk around and think "outside the box" if you know what I mean. This book constantly made me laugh, especially when the father fights with his son. That whole argument is hysterical! The book throws some good twists to American society that most of us never see. My basic thoughts on this novel are that you should read this because it will really make you laugh, and make you think about your typical day of work and life.

But it's still a good story. I just hate because it's only 180 pages long. I think that's why I thought it was rushed. I don't believe that you can fall in love that fast in 2 days. You just met the man on the plane and then you're in love 2 days later. A little far fetched but it's all good. It's a Brenda Jackson novel that I'm glad to have in my collection.
Who Woulda Thought He Would Fall In Love..........2005-12-29
Brenda Jackson does it again with this book...Although it wasn't one of the best she has done, it is a good read! I love reading about the Westmoreland clan. I loved reading about Stone and how he falls in love with Madison. You should read (only if you have read the other books about the Westmoreland's).
Oh How Sweet Surrender Can Be.......2004-11-26
Brenda Jackson has definitely done it again. This is a long awaited continuation of those fabulous Westmoreland men. Stone Westmoreland, a writer who is going away to his uncle's mountain for a little R&R and to write his next story, sits next to Madison Winters on the plane flight. Ironically, Madison is also heading to the mountain, but unbeknowing they are both headed for the same destination. Madison is in search of her "wayward" mother, who decides to remain in Montana for a few weeks instead of returning to Boston. Has Stone's cold heart been melted by the lovely Miss Winters? Stone has said in the past that he will not become involved with a romantic interest, but has this flight changed everything?
Madison, also is not interested in starting a new love interest. After being slighted by her fiance' Madison has shunned any romantic notions. However, when she accidently touches Stone in the seat next to her, sparks definitely flies and Stone's coldness begin to melt.
There are several surprises in this story. Ms. Jackson has certainly kept us up to date on the Westmoreland family as well as the other twists involving the Westmoreland. I enjoyed this book and look forward to other stories continuing the Westmoreland saga. I know there is a "Storm" coming and I am anticipating it.
Definitely, keep writing, Ms. Jackson!
Trust Factor.......2004-11-01
Brenda Jackson writes an exciting story on how a young lady has to come to the realization that her mother has the right to fall in love and so does she. Madison Winters feels that her mother is acting out of sorts to only find her falling in love too while not realizing it. While Storm ensures himself that he had no plans on falling in love to only realize that when he set out to prove a point it only lead to the proven fact that true affection.
As Madson and Storm endure the challenge of each others love they
both must learn to trust again and when the turbulence of
relationships come about only their love can hold them together.

It was predicted that the Westmoreland children would all find love at first sight. That is not going to be the case for avowed bachelor, Stone Westmoreland, in STONE COLD SURRENDER. In this fourth installment of the Westmoreland series, Stone is following in his Uncle Corey Westmoreland's footsteps--a bachelor to the end. Uncle Corey has an entire mountain to himself and has declared it off limits to women. Both men are affirmed bachelors until the Winters' women step into their lives.
After a very sensual take-off from Atlanta to Montana, Madison Winters meets Stone. In a very short time, the two realize an instant attraction that simmers on the edge of each one's consciousness. Madison, a schoolteacher from Boston, is on a mission to find her mom and bring her home or at the least find out what's gotten into her. Abby Winters is acting in a fashion very uncharacteristic of a widow and mother in her daughter's eye, and it is especially worrisome because a man is involved.
Stone becomes completely enchanted with Madison, but he doesn't want to admit it. He likes bachelorhood and doesn't want to make a serious commitment, or so he thinks. When he realizes that Madison is somewhat inexperienced in the feelings of love and passion, he makes it his business to guide her through the discovery while helping her to locate her mother. Once they find Abby, their perceptions about love and life may change considerably.
Silhouette novels were always a favorite of mine in my youthful days, and for the life of me, I can't figure out why I gave them up, especially, after reading STONE COLD SURRENDER. Brenda Jackson is a great romance writer. Montana is not the most romantic place that I can think of, but add a couple of sensual individuals and Ms. Jackson's writing abilities and you have a wonderful and heartwarming love story that leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling all over. I feel like a kid in a candy store having just discovered a new flavor.

I am a lomg-time B5 fan, who purchased and retaina all video versions and spin offs, which I dust off and re-watch ever other year or so.
This is My first printed story by independent authors following outlines by B5 creator, J. Straczynski. I liked the book and in my opinion it was credible, well-written, entertaining, and followed the B5 story line well. I thank the author, Peter David, for his effort in writing the Final Reckoning - The Fate of Bester. I have no negative comments about the book or the author, and I hope he will write more B5 stories. I will probably buy all the B5 paperbacks eventually.
Vir's Growth Continues.......2005-02-16
I have to say that I really like the way Vir is developing as a character in this book. Vir was always the bumbling aide de camp for Londo, but he has taken on an entirely new role during this crisis faced by his homeworld, and I must say that it rather becomes him.
This volume covers the time period from 2267-2273. Centauri Prime is falling deeper and deeper into the abyss and there is nothing Emperor Londo Mollari can do about it. Durla has all but taken over all of the functions of government in Centauri Prime and the anti-foreigner campaign is taking a new life among the Centauri.
A small number are prepared to resist this new order, led by Vir. Vir has help, namely from the mysterious technomages.
Garibaldi and G-Kar come into the story about halfway through the book, and President Sheriden at the end. This story very skillfully brings us from a hurting world, smarting from the beating it took at the hands of the Alliance to the subterfuge Durla and his followers use to rebuild Centauri strength.
Sure, Earth parallels are in evidence, as I suppose seem to be inevitable. However, for Babylon V fans, this storyline makes a lot of sense and is compelling. For those not familiar with the Babylon V universe, get familiar with it and read book one before picking up this volume. While this isn't heavy reading, the background information is highly useful for understanding what goes on in the book.
Second Book in Series - Even Better Than First.......2004-09-01
The second book of the trilogy depicting the reign of Emporer Mollari and the hidden occupation by the Drakh. This particular book deals with the further fall from grace of Emperor Mollari, and the beginning of the rise of Ambassador Vir Cotto to prominence as the leader of an underground revolution. The twists and turns of the plot continue to be well done. There are numerous mentions to the Babylon 5 series "Crusade" through the eyes of the TechnoMage Galen. A very good book that will keep you turning its pages throughout the night.
Drink before reading, don't want them to know........2004-02-23
This book, based on an outline from Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski (so you know it's official), covers the period in B5's history detailing the continuing rule of Emperor Londo Mollari's of Centauri Prime, all while under the thumb of the Drakh.
As the Drakh continue the plans of the Shadows, their former masters, forces start brewing both on and off Centauri Prime once certain people learn what's going on. And the Drakh attack on Earth sure didn't help much.
This book continues to fill in the twenty-year gap at the end of the Babylon 5 series, and is just as riveting as the show, because we know what happens, and when, but these books explain how and why. Strongly recommended.
Vir hits the big time.......2003-04-22
This middle part of the trilogy is the best page-turner of the three. While Emperor Mollari becomes increasingly irrelevant to events on his world, the government around him grows into something he would not have dreamed and is powerless to stop. His former attache, Vir Cotto, finds the undying love of a beautiful woman and is, to his credit, ambivalent about the whole affair. And the much-beloved techno-mage Galen makes some beautifully crafted appearances, filling in his time away from the Excalibur during the same time frame of the "Crusade" series.
This volume gathers nearly the entire cast of characters from "Babylon 5," as they relate to the Centauri homeworld, and uses them variously as foils or informing observers to the action going on with Londo, Vir, and several other major Centauri characters introduced in the first book. The Drakh, imitating their Shadow masters as the universe's newest evil puppeteers, are setting up the Centauri as their unwitting allies, and one Centauri stands in their way. On to book three...

Lots of substance, little context.......2000-09-29
This book presents basic religious texts of a variety of religions, eastern and western, with a more or less objective presentation. However, I found the introductory materials for each religion to be overly academic at times, sometimes raising as many questions as it answered. If you're looking for an entry-level survey of what the world's religions believe -- an interpretation of the doctrines these scriptures lay out -- this may not be the best resource available.
I suspect this would make a fine textbook for a college-level survey of world religions, though I was familiar with several of them by the time I found this book. The layperson, looking for an introduction to what Buddhists, Muslims, or the Shinto actually believe, may be left scratching his or her head.

So much religious energy is spent emphasizing the differences between schools of thought instead of focusing on the foundation which is the same. This book allows one to see what he/she has in common with others whose religious tradition may be different from their own.

I have looked for and read many similar books to this, and I must say that this is the best of the best. These editors really went all out to put together a quality product. World Scripture contains a vast variety of selections from various religious scriptures and sources, and groups them together by category, with background information before each category. I believe the best hing about the book is the tremendous variety of source subjects. Almost everything is in here, including Judaism, Chritianity, Islam, Shinto, Sikhism, Jainism, Hinduism, Buddhism, African Religions, Native American Religions and more; plus some schools of thought that are bordlerine religions, such as Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, etc. If you are into learning about religions, this book is an absolute MUST. And for such a lengthy book, it sells at a very reasonable price.
I also recommend The World's Wisdom, Daily Inspiration for the Purpose Driven Life (Bible Quotes), Bounty of Allah (Qu'ran quotes and various Islamic / Sufi quotes), and Pearls of Jaina Wisdom (teachings / aphorisms from the scriptures of Jainism). ALso be sure to check out my book A Collection of Wisdom, which contains wisdom from the world's religions and many other sources.

This is a theology students dream. It must have taken one many years of serious study and labor to compile scripture references in this way. Passages from the holy books of every major and most minor religions are represented here and grouped side by side by topic for quick comparison. On almost every subject the harmony of thought is staggering! It makes one wonder why religious leaders ever quarrel with one another. It's a great book for study and even better to browse. I started reading it in my doctor's waiting room and got hooked. I found myself actualy looking forward to going to the doctor! If you'd like to sample divine wisdom from many cultures and ages. Buy this book and you'll refer to and enjoy it for a lifetime!
Fascinating.......2000-10-20
I received this book as a graduation present from my Unitarian Universalist church and I immediately starting flipping through it. The length is intimidating, but it's all quotes or short text, so there is no pressure to read it all. The beauty of the book is that it contains texts from so many religions that cover every area of life in such philosophical detail. It has answers, but leaves you with questions that you must answer yourself. I found this book especially useful for a Theory of Knowledge class I had last year. This book was constantly at hand and continually provided me with support for my arguments. This book is fascinating and thorough, and I encourage everyone to buy it regardless of your religious background.
