You can't read past the first chapter of Lisa Scottoline's newest legal thriller without mentally casting the actor who might play Pigeon Tony, the charming and totally authentic defendant who's on trial for killing the man who raped and murdered his wife, destroyed his son and daughter-in-law in a staged "accident," and has threatened the life of his grandson. Robert De Niro's too threatening, Joe Mantegna's too young, Marlon Brando's too fat, but somewhere there must be a celluloid counterpart to one of the most delightful antiheroes in recent crime fiction. Meanwhile, this wonderful character study of a man of conscience on trial for a crime of passion will divert and entertain fans of Scottoline's previous novels about Bennie Rosato's high-estrogen Philadelphia law firm (Moment of Truth, Mistaken Identity).
When Judy Carrier, one of Bennie's attorneys, takes on Tony's defense, she's faced with a legal and moral dilemma. Tony admits that he killed Angelo Coluzzi, but insists it wasn't murder but vendetta, a justifiable payback for a blood crime committed nearly half a century ago and a continent away. The Coluzzi family knows about vendetta, too--they've got their own payback planned, and the trick for Judy is keeping Pigeon Tony (and herself) alive long enough to get them to trial. There's a complication de coeur when Judy falls in love with Tony's grandson, a hunky stonemason who will do for fences what Robert James Waller did for covered bridges (Clint Eastwood's too old, Brad Pitt's too young, etc.). But all's well that ends well in a tidy little read that will probably earn Scottoline another well-deserved shot at the bestseller list. --Jane Adams
Book Description
Judy Carrier takes the case of her career to defend Anthony Lucia, fondly known as "Pigeon Tony," who freely admits to killing his lifelong enemy in order to settle a personal vendetta. Her client's guilt, however, is only the beginning of Judy's problems. The victim's family wants revenge and is determined to finish off Pigeon Tony and Judy before the case goes to trial. Then there's Pigeon Tony's hunky grandson, who makes Judy think about everything but the law. In a case steeped in blood and memory, it will take brains and a lot of luck to save Pigeon Tony. But if anyone will see justice done, it's this gutsy girl who'll risk everything to win -- including her life.

"In The Vendetta Defense, New York Times bestselling author Lisa Scottoline delivers a wonderfully rich, vivid story of past sins, love, and justice. Lawyer Judy Carrier takes the case of her career when an elderly pigeon racer named Anthony Lucia is arrested for the murder of his lifelong enemy, Angelo Coluzzi. ""Pigeon Tony,"" as he's known to all his South Philly neighbors, confesses he killed Coluzzi because of a vendetta begun more than fifty years ago, a blood feud that has brought great tragedy to Pigeon Tony's life. Her client's guilt, however, is only the beginning of Judy's problems. The Coluzzi family wants revenge, and they are determined to finish off Pigeon Tony and Judy before the case can go to trial. And if that isn't enough, Judy's got to contend with Tony's magnetic grandson, Frank, a man who makes her think about everything but the law, and her boss, the no-nonsense Bennie Rosato. In a case steeped in blood and memory, it will take a stroke of brilliance to save Pigeon Tony. But if anyone just might see justice done, it's this gutsy young attorney who'll risk everything to win ... including her life."

Just a little TOO unbelieveable.......2007-01-13
I'm normally kind with my reviews of this type of literature. It's not meant to be a novel of great significance - just lite entertainment.
BUT . . . this one has just a few too many holes.
It's not awful - I did finish it after all - but there were a number of negatives. Here are the pluses and minuses, as I see them:
*1* - I was not annoyed enough to turn off the tape and stop listening.
-2- - the cast of characters tended to be a little too annoying in their "goodness" vs. "evil." Pigeon Tony was a little "too" sweet for my taste. Even under the given circumstances, he needed a little more grit.
-3- - As mentioned by another reviewer, what was with the 1st degree murder charge? Can't imagine any prosecutor worth his salt pursuing anything over manslaughter, given the circumstances.
-4- - The romance angle was a little heavy-handed.
-5- - The total inaction of the authorities when Judy's life was threatened strains credibility.
Overall, I like Scottoline. I've read several of her other novels. This one, though, just left me feeling kind of "blah-humbug". Here's to a better story next time!
Lifelong feud.......2006-12-25
Judy Carrier goes to visit her lawyer friend Mary who is recuperating from an attack she suffered during a previous case. As they are talking, Judy learns of a friend of Mary's family who has been arrested for murder. Thus we are introduced to Pigeon Tony, surely one of Scottoline's most endearing and memorable characters. He is a man who has only his grandson Frank and his pigeons because his wife and son have been killed, Tony believes, by his lifelong enemy, Angelo Coluzzi. Pigeon Tony readily admits to the murder of Coluzzi but feels that he is justified because of the ancient customs associated with the Italian vendetta in which a person can avenge serious wrongs which have been done to him. Unfortunately, when Judy agrees to defend him, she must do so in a U.S. court which does not recognize the Italian vendetta. Also she subjects herself to reprisals by the powerful Coluzzi family who are very protective of their relatives. This book also throws in some romance for Judy, which sometimes conflicts with her job as Pigeon Tony's attorney. This is one of Scottoline's better books and is recommended reading.
Inside Judy Carrier's Head.......2006-01-12
I've read all of Scottoline's books, including those not about the all woman law firm, but this one is the best. Judy Carrier, who at most was a snarky side kick in Scottoline's other books, turns out to be athletic, smart and wickedly funny in this story. She's always been reckless and brave, but without her conscience, Mary, around and faced with the annoying younger associate, Murphy, Judy has to keep her off the handle client from torching her case and putting them both in danger. The story is believable, and finally, we get to see what Judy is really like.
My First Scottoline Book!.......2006-01-03
I happened to pick this book up at a garage sale ~~ and this past week was just perfect to unwind from the holiday craziness with a good book and this one just happened to beckon my name! I couldn't put this one down for the world! Thankfully, my husband was home to entertain the kids (thankfully also, the kids were entertained by their new toys) ~~ and I was able to sit and read this book through. Like I said, this is my first Socttoline book and it won't be the last either!
Judy Cartier agrees to take on the case of Pigeon Foot Tony, an Italian man accused of murdering another Italian man. What makes this case even more difficult is that he didn't deny killing the man. Digging deeper into the backgrounds, Judy finds out what vendetta really is and fighting against a top Italian family as well as the police force, Judy races to find a way to defend her client. The investigation takes several twists and turns and digging deeper into a feud that has lasted over 50 years.
This is an enjoyable mystery novel ~~ for one thing, it really gives an idea of who the clients are and it gives a background history of the client that brings the reader to an understanding of the vendetta and the characters are better developed than most mystery novels are. It wasn't predictable like I thought it would be ~~ I find myself holding my breath in several spots. And it wasn't a typical mobster story either. It was a great read ~~ perfect for a lazy winter afternoon by the fireplace. Scottoline is definitely an author I will keep an eye out for!

laughed out loud.......2007-06-15
As an Italian American who grew up in a neighborhood in Philly, I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version of this book. Laughing out loud in the car. I know people like these characters. The reader did a superb job with the accents and of course Scottoline knows her material so well. It rang true - and funny.

Sweet anger.......2007-02-12
sandra brown is a great writer. this book I just read was wonderful. I will continue to read all of her books
It was good..........2006-01-29
I did like this book.... I read it in two days. I liked the characters, but I think the whole plot was a bit drab. It was a good stroy of passion and romance and I am glad that I read it. I liked how both of their jobs conflicted in the story and their love prevailed. I think Brown should have kept going with the story, she could have made it better.
It didn't hang the moon..........2005-06-25
This one was just okay for me. I think what I didn't like about it was how mean the DA had to be in the beginning, and the unrealistic and completely unrelated line of questioning he took her through on the stand. Nothing he said had anything to do with the case against the two surviving men who were on trial. It was just ridiculous, and only succeeded in irritating me.
And the other thing was the loss of her baby. Hunter was not broken up enough about that, and it was partially his fault if you ask me. Plus, how do you fall in love with someone you've never even met (as Hunter did with Kari). That stupidness just killed it for me.
The best part of the story is when Kari is suspended and goes to the mountains, and Hunter followers her. The story is all good while they are in the mountains on a mini break, but then, I don't know, it was kind of flat from there. Nice enough read, I guess. I would recommend Eloquent Silence or Two Alone instead.
It wasn' that bad of a story..........2004-06-04
I was in the mood for something quick- fast, something that didn't take a whole lot of thinking. And I agree that some of it seemed silly and unrealistic (I guess I have come to expect that of earlier books)but overall I did enjoy it. Kind of like it served its purpose for something enjoyable that didn't take a lot of thinking- easy reading. And I do agree that Hunter did fall for Kari too quickly. But cupid can knock one off it's feet rather quickly- I've seen that done myself. What's the story? Kari Wynne is a reporter. She is married to a city councilman who at one time was well-respected throughout the city dies in a car accident. DA Hunter McKee has found some serious dirt on Kari's husband, destroying his reputation and causing doubt and anguish for Kari. Now Kari wants to find out what was true and/or false in her marriage along with the mysterious death of her husband. Having to deal closely with Hunter McKee- you know they say there is a fine line between love and hate. Well, line gets crosses from hate to passion and love. Well, I am giving it a rating of 4 stars when it really desired a 31/2 but I just don't feel like it was as bad as other reviewers feel.
One of the best.......2002-07-26
This is one of my favourites in Sandra Brown. I read it 4 days ago and finished it in two days. The love in the hate given in the book very good and I loved the love between Kari and Hunter and also between Bonnie and Pinkie. It was a really good book and I think you must start reading it right now!

Customer Reviews:
Thank you, Mr. Yamada.......2006-09-19
Mr. Yamada, thank you for writing this book. No other book has brought tears to my eyes from just reading the prologue. While you considered this book to be a hard-boiled detective story, I found it to be the quest of a cyborg for his dog, and also the search to find out if a cyborg has a soul.
This is really an excellent little book. I wish that Masamune Shirow had writing chops like Yamada. The author is an excellent writer, and now I'm going to have to see if there are other books of his in translation.
The author explores some of the aspects of Shirow's postulated future, with e-brains, cybernetic enhancements, way too much connectivity and too little information. The only downside to the book is that it is short.
Don't miss this "quiet" release!.......2006-03-25
I'm a Ghost In The Shell fan. I enjoyed the films and LOVE the SAC series.
I'm a science fiction fan. William Gibson is easily one of my top 3 authors, I really enjoyed Stephenson's "Snowcrash", and read and enjoyed "cyberpunk" voraciously until it became a rather tired genre.
So how I missed this wonderful novel until now, I'll never know! "After the Long Goodbye" is a very worthy addition to the GitS universe, and by the nature of its setting, has a cyberpunk feel to it, but it's so much more mature and thoughtful than much of that genre.
It wrestles some big questions, and even poses some interesting answers. It's written in the 1st person from Batou's POV, which surprised the heck out of me in the first two pages, but Yamada has done a wonderful job of putting the reader in the big guy's head without betraying what we've seen on the big and small screens. It's also surprisingly free of the techno-pron I'd expected. I expected almost excruciating detail about weapons, cyborgs and so on but, as Batou himself says, he's "no otaku". There's easily as much philosophy and technology in this novel, as befitting the GitS universe.
Strangely, after the first few pages, I sort of gave up on it being a "GitS novel". Little reference to Section 9, a few token appearances of Togusa, no Aramaki, and of course no Motoko... it does not seem like an unaired episode of GitS. However, by the end of the novel, all of the threads come together and you realize that, yes, it's very much a GitS story, one bigger than the television screen, but perhaps too quiet for the big screen. If you read it, perhaps you'll know what I'm trying to say.
By the way, it's a quick read, only 180+ pages. Also, the afterward "interview" with Yamada and "Innocence" director Mamoru Oshii is a treat, and offers some fascinating insights into their approaches to this universe, and the "Innocence" film itself.
Highly recommended, and required for GitS fans.
A Great Piece of Literature in its Own Right.......2006-02-21
I picked up After the Long Goodbye during a quick stop at Borders Bookstore for something to read on a long road trip later that day. While browsing around, I just happened to notice the book cover with Batou and his Basset Hound. I was very intrigued, since I had heard nothing about a novel coming out for Ghost in the Shell.
At first, I was afraid that it would read very poorly, either due to a bad translation or because of some defect in original source material (since it is a tie-in to the movie). However, I was completely wrong on both counts. This novel is very sophisticated in its language and reads extremely well. Like some other reviewers, I hope that people won't disregard this title just because it's based off of an anime/manga series. I normally take a very long time to get through any novel, but this was a hard book to put down. I definitely recommend it to anyone that is either a fan of the series or sci-fi/cyberpunk in general. The ways in which most things are written here, from the characters to the action and intrigue, were definitely handled with care. Kudos to the translators and the original author.
Souls, friends and dogs........2006-01-28
This book is all about Batou - and the many questions he has. Does he have a soul? Why did Gabriel go? Fighting tanks, the yakuza, fast food, racing hounds, homeless guys and the question of where love comes from.
This is set before the second Ghost In The Shell movie, Innocence, and also has a bonus discussion between the director, Mamoru Oshii, and the author, Masaki Yamada.
There's gun fights, advanced science, philosophy and surreal scenes of the 21st Century.
Surprisingly good.......2006-01-27
Yeah, it's a tie-in. Get over it.
What we have here is a well-written and thoughtful take on Philip K. Dick territory in a William Gibson world. What does it mean to be human, to love, to feel empathy? As more and more of your body and even your brain are replaced by machinery, how much of your humanness remains?
It may help to have some familiarity with the two Ghost in the Shell films, but it probably isn't necessary. The novel does a fine job of setting the scene, describing the characters, and explaining the future tech and philosophical questions that drive the movies. There's action, of course, suspense, intrigue, science fictional ideas explored, but at its heart the book is character-driven, following a cyborg who doesn't dream of electric sheep because he almost never dreams at all.
I expected this to be a quick, fun cyberpunk read in an interesting SF world. It's a lot more than that, and it shouldn't slip past the SF-reading world unnoticed.

Archeological findings support texts in The Old Testament of the Bible.......2007-01-10
The aim of the project described in the book was to try to find possible archeological evidences for the story told in the Genesis and Exodus of The Old Testament: that of Abraham, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the exodus of the people of Israel, from Egypt to Horeb (Mount Sinai). The major part of the work was done by a late US amateur archeologist and his discoveries were evaluated and put together in a book by the author who is professor at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. The text is well written with a critical attitude, easy to read and accompanied by 556 first-class illustrations. It is a really fascinating story about something which happened about 3500 years ago. The conclusion is that the biblical texts referred to describe true historical events. The author is to be congratulated on this work.
The Exodus Case.......2006-11-10
Extremely pleased with product. Excellent book in quality and content; fast service.
A Case Poorly Made.......2006-10-21
I became aware of the extraordinary photoes and theories of Ron Wyatt while earning my degree in Ancient History at UC Berkeley. I still beleive that his conclutions about the Red Sea crossing at Nuweiba are exactly right on. But, why build an entire fictional history around these discoveries? And a history with such radical departures from Commonly Accepted Egyptology???? Where do I start? Imhotep and Joseph? Imhotep was a Neolithic Vonderkinde. He invented stone buildings and his affects upon Egyptian culture made him a demigod. And he lived c. 2650 BC. Joseph arrived in Egypt, according to the history inherent in the Bible, c. 1925 BC, almost 800 years after Imhotep. Need I go on. Why, oh why do you almost totally discredit a wonderful discovery with such sloopy history? The Nuweiba discovery, along with a totally positive ID of the real Mt. Sinai would certainly stand on its own!
Thank God I have researched this very topic for almost 30 years and know better. Anyone with the brains to open a history book could figure out that Moses was born when the Bible says he was, at the begining of the 18th Dynasty shortly after the expulsion of the Hyksos by Ahmosis. Tuthmosis II died on the 80th birthday of Moses, 81 years after the expulsion of the Hyksos. So who do you think hye was?(clue, he died right in front of Moses in the Gulf of Aquaba) Flavius Josephus, a treator and refugee from a Judean slum, totally messed up the identity of the Hebrews with the Hyksos 1900 years ago and we're still paying the price. Having to read such stuff. Next you'll have these people telling us that space aliens really did build the pyramids, of course with the help of Jacob and Joseph! Ron Wyatt's web site has these photos of Nuweiba and the chariot remains. Don't waste your money. Visit the website.
Thought Provoking And Worth Reading.......2006-09-13
Dr.Moller has written a fascinating book that seeks to harmonize events surrounding the Biblical Exodus with Egyptology and the recent "re-discovery" of the real Mt. Sinai in Saudi Arabia (Jabal Al-Lawz).
If Moller did not use words such as, "it is the hypothesis of this book" or other terminology suggesting speculation on his part, the book would be less credible. But he admits to speculating, and his speculations are fascinating (even if historically questionable at a few points).
Many of the photos and research in this volume was done by Ron Wyatt, the controversial amateur archaelogist. Although I am not a Wyatt fan, others have confirmed some of his key discoveries (e.g., Bob Cornuke).
Moller suggests that Joseph's history is incorporated in the legend of Imhotep; yet, Imhotep lived too early for Joseph. Nonetheless, many events and attributes ascribed to Imhotep fit Joseph. Perhaps a better theory is that the Imhotep legned is the combination of the original Imhotep WITH Joseph; it would have been unpopular, when the Hebrews became slaves, to have a Hebrew Hero-type Grand Vizier like Joseph, so the legends were combined. This, then, allows one to believe that the Imhotep legend does indeed include Joseph while not creating havoc with a 600 plus year problem between Imhotep and Joseph.
The idea that Thutmosis IV was the same person as Amenhotep III is a bit weak because the Valley of the Kings would then have two tombs per pharaoh, something that only the early pharoahs did (and then not in the same area). The Pharoah of the Exodus could very well be Amenhotep III.
The author traces the crossing of the Red Sea to an underwater bridge (complete with photos of calcified chariot parts at the bottom of the Red Sea) and takes us all the way to Mt. Sinai.
Moller relies upon the accuracy of the Biblical account (and I appreciate that), and fills in many details along the way. I found the book intriguing and worthwhile. Although I may be a bit uncertain about all of his speculations, many of them harmonize well.
The style is a bit odd; it was originally written in Swedish and then translated into English. It is clearly translated, but the style is a bit "different" (perhaps "lackluster" might be a better term). But the content makes up for the style.
The book contains over 500 photos and maps.
I recommend this book with the caveat that readers remember that much of this is speculative. But it is good stuff.
Amazing Book.......2006-03-20
This book is a must have to anybody interesting in the truth about God's word. The amount of information will draw you to it and if you are a true believer in God, you will share it with your family and friends. I have bought 10 EA so far and gave them all away and I will continue with God's blessing to do so. I strongly recommend it with the companion DVD as a great gift of love.
