Far fetched in some parts.......2007-06-04
Albeit you'd never get into the book's story it'll keep you reading. But if for one person's whim can be a blackout and keep Vegas without water, I think that the State of Nevada has a very BIG problem as well as the whole country. If one simple woman thinks that she can do whatever she wants to Las Vegas's mob and get away with it... as it happened in the book... I think I better read Cinderella. It's more plausible.
Not Bad.......2007-04-04
I stayed interested enough in this book to finish it. However, it isn't a book I would save for a later reading like I do with some of my "keepers". It was a little hard to keep track of all the different characters. The book wasn't bad; it did keep me reading. I have to say though that a lot of the dialogue seemed excessive, childish and unreal, as if everyone were just thinking out loud. Many of the characters weren't developed enough for me to fully comprehend what they were really like.
The Vegas Series: Vegas Heat.......2004-11-06
Fanny Thornton, a.k.a. Mrs. Las Vegas, has inherited all her money from ex-husband Ash's mother. Fanny now controls all of Las Vegas including the newly built casino, Babylon, which her ex runs. But she's not happy. Dating Ash's brother, Simon, is a little too close to family for her likes but after marrying him she finds out she knows nothing about the evil person he's become. "Who are you, Simon? More to the point, what are you?" She comes to find out that she knows very little about her husband. That everything he has said or done has been a lie. During a family emergency she is forced to take over and run Babylon. Vegas Heat by Fern Michaels is about Fanny's struggles to find out what true happiness is.
Fanny is a kind compassionate woman who gave herself completely to her children. Until she realized she wasn't being honest, she never thought about herself. At times she is too much of a make believe character by always sacrificing herself for others. She's always getting into trouble that ends up being solved only to start a new conflict. The money doesn't over power her yet it makes you angry that she keeps most of it to herself and rarely spends it on cause worthy events. She's a bit too calm and normal when things get out of control and manages to cry in almost every chapter.
Ash Thornton has reversed 180 degrees since the first book in this trilogy. He's loving, caring, and joyous. You have to wonder if it is just an act he is putting on to get at the Thornton money. "Ash must have an ulterior motive then. He never does anything without a reason." No one can believe that this man has changed for the better. It does seem unreal that he could change from being a greedy mad at life man to a loving babysitter for his young grandson with such ease. Fern Michaels should have made the transition smoother instead of snapping her fingers to give him a change.
This book is about romance, happiness, and overcoming difficulties. The theme of this book is you can always overcome difficulties. The book has too many obstacles for the main character to jump over. It is like a yearlong soap opera crammed into 400 some pages.
Older women with kids will appreciate this book because they can relate to Fanny. They can relate to the obstacles she's been through. Women can relate to their kids not needing them anymore and the tragedies of marriage. Yet no woman will be able to relate to every single drama that happens.
Fern Michaels' style is to create drama. She creates happily ever after endings for her books. There is always a new drama to be conquered that usually results in another one forming. Vegas Heat catches your attention and constantly changes your feelings while keeping you interested. It's an easy read for those who like long descriptive novels.
It captures your interest but loses it's grip as every new drama happens. Yet you wonder every time, how are they going to get out of this one? If you like novels that never come to a point but make an easy relaxing read, you should pick up a copy of this book by best selling author Fern Michaels.
Trying to be too many things in one book.......2003-08-13
I read this book prior to reading any of the reviews; and I have to say that I agree with the editorial review. The author tried to put in too many things without developing the characters. There is one chapter that feels like it was misplaced, right in the middle of two consecutive chapters because it could not have happened in the time frame that was discussed. It didn't even make sense that the author put in this particular chapter in the first place. I almost feel that the other readers fell in love with other book(s) written by Ms. Michael, and were just happy to have another book!
Absolutely wonderful book!.......1998-06-28
Another wonderful one by Fern Michaels. Can't decide which is the best, the Vegas series or the Texas series. They are all so good, I just love them. As usual the writing was superb!!
Book Description
Fascinating true story of a low stakes casino player who used every angle to win enough money to increase his playing bankroll five fold from $2,000 to $10,000 while simultaneously enjoying free vacations in Las Vegas. The techniques he used to gain the advantage over the casinos -card counting, casino coupons, and casino promotions - are explained in detail in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Great Read!!!.......2005-02-02
I too have been following LVPro's adventures in the Blackjack Insider newsletter. When I heard that he was compiling a book of his trips, I just had to read it and see how it all started!
His approach to grinding out an advantage in BJ play against the casinos was written in a much more realistic style than other books I have read on the subject. I could relate to his goals, problems, highs and lows in his pursuit of the elusive bankroll.
His style of writing is easy to read as well as humorous. I thoroughly enjoyed the read and found many nuggets of knowledge that I can apply to my own pursuits.
Wow! What a ride........2005-01-26
The ups and downs. The highs and lows. The good the bad and the ugly of LV advantage playing. Could not put it down.
Fascinating book.......2005-01-23
Read it all in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down!
Everyman beats Vegas!.......2005-01-09
LV Pro is a card counter. He turns himself from a degenerate losing gambler into a degenerate winning card counter and shares all the details as he proceeds to build his bankroll trip after trip, beating the casinos at their own game of blackjack. Unlike the high-rolling whiz-kids on the MIT team in Bringing Down the House, LV Pro grits it out, starting on small teams, but deciding to make it on his own. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas is the usual rule, but not this time. The good games, the interesting folks who count cards and pursue them, sex, drugs, and money...all find their way into this genuine account of one man's pursuit of the Vegas dream.
Brutally honest look at Vegas and at Card Counting.......2005-01-06
I have followed Barfarkel's trip reports as posted on bj21.com for many months now. "You've Got Heat" is a compilation of the reports that blackjack fans have followed for several years on bj21.com and on Henry Tamburin's Blackjack Insider site.
"You've Got Heat" is not a how-to manual on card counting. It is, however, a very entertaining read about the author's journey into both the secretive world of the card counter and the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.
Books such as "Bringing Down the House" would have one believe that card counters live a lavish existence and routinely throttle casinos for millions of dollars. "You've Got Heat" dispels this myth and shows that the card counter faces an enormous challenge. Barfarkel describes the emotional highs and lows of his grind against the casinos in a very straightforward fashion.
Las Vegas guidebooks and Travel Channel specials generally show only the glitz and the glamour of Sin City. "You've Got Heat" explores the various cultures and subcultures of Las Vegas from many angles, ranging from the ritzy shows at the Bellagio and other high-end Strip properties to the prostitutes, vagrants, and other unsavory characters at the city's numerous run-down casinos.
Anyone with an interest in either Las Vegas or blackjack will like Barfarkel's book. Frequent Vegas travelers can learn a great deal from Barfarkel's experiences. All aspiring card counters should read this book so that they may thoroughly understand the focus and discipline required for long-term success.

Book Description
Vegas Rich
With a heart full of dreams, Sallie Coleman leaves Texas and heads west determined to get as far from the squalor of her dirt poor beginnings. With its shifting sands, smoky saloons and bingo palaces, Las Vegas seems like a paradise. A paradise where an extraordinary twist of fate makes Sallie the most powerful businesswoman in Nevada. Suddenly she is rich. With the help of Philip Thornton, the handsome Bostonian, Sallie is transformed into Vegas's most elegant first lady. Philip gives her two sons, Simon and Ash. One will bring her great joy, the other, heartbreak.
Vegas Heat
The powerful story of the Thornton dynasty. . . of Fanny's twin sons, Sage and Brich: alienated from each other, one is content in his conventional life while the other's search for happiness leads to tragedy - and renewed hope. It is the story of Fanny's two daughters: Sunny, betrayed by her husband, fighting a battle no woman should ever have to face. . . Billie, whose obsessive devotion to the Thorntons' children's clothing empire has kept her from finding love. It is also the story of Fanny's search for her own roots. . . and her relationship with Marcus Reed, the wealthy but mysterious businessman who promises her a passion she has been denied for too long.
Vegas Sunrise
Fanny Thornton, the proud matriarch of the Thornton dynasty, will do anything for her family. Her four children, now grown, mean everything to her, as does Babylon, the most dazzling casino in Las Vegas and the Thorntons' crowning achievement. But her children have dispersed across the globe, and so she chooses Jeff, the illegitimate son of her deceased husband, to run the casino. But Jeff has plans of his own, and soon devises a scheme to turn Fanny's four children against her. As the siblings vie for their rightful heritage, deceit, distrust, and thwarted dreams of power threaten to divide the Thorntons once and for all.

Great for commuting to work.......2002-10-03
I am sick and tired of commuting to and from work and listening to the same old song and dance on the radio so I picked these up at Cosco one night and thought I'd give it a try. It was great mindless entertainment. I wouldn't say they were Hemingway or even Oprah Club Books, but they were pure entertainment. I loved the storyline, with the Veags backdrop and I will be on the lookout for the Texas series on cassette or maybe some other Fern Michaels books. I'll save the thought provoking reading for my actual books and the senseless entertainment for the audiobooks.
Vegas Rich/Vegas Heat/ Vegas Sunrise.......2002-03-21
Have read all three books they are great could not put the first one down and then I could not wait for the other to come out. Then they were past to my mother n law and have since went through the family and now to the neighbors so my paper backs are about worn out now!

Unique characters and a Unique story.......2000-07-05
A good book like most of Carla Neggers's, A Rare Chance has unique and definitely interesting characters. The heroine, Gabriella, is the daughter of the world's greatest expert on orchids, and has a rather strange background as a result. She is trying to become normal now and work for a normal company; however a security man from her workplace starts following her around for no apparent reason. Cam Yeager is an odd "white knight" police officer about to turn DA when he sees his old partner following Gabriella around. From their meeting at the beginning of the book, A Rare Chance gets more and more interesting, with Gabriella and Cam joining forces, until the very explosive end.

Customer Reviews:
Dark Fantasy.......2002-01-04
Another excellant addition to my Royo collection. Full color prints with an apocalyptic style. Four have a demonic influence, the rest with post-holocaustical themes.
S&M Mutilation Fantasy.......2000-11-08
This calendar was not what I imagined it would be. I was expecting to see Royo's fine art depict men, women, aliens, and maybe a spaceship or two, at least a spaceport. Instead I saw beautiful women in assorted stages of bondage and disrepair.
While I do not consider myself to be prudish, I still do not see what makes a scared or angry looking, pouting, injured, crying, mutilated, bleeding, bound woman in torn clothing sexy. But that's just me. And no, a scared-looking, pouting, injured, crying, mutilated, blood-covered chained man doesn't do it for me, either.
I do not deny the beauty of the female forms depicted in this calendar; the angel-from-Hell is intriguing, and would make a fabulous subject for a poster were she not leashed, and not covered in blood. Only one month features a non-bleeding unchained intact woman.
Louis Royo's talent for eliciting thoughts of fantasy is not to be denied, but the art in this calendar is a bit exotic. Not X-rated, just exotic. Perhaps next year there will be a Royo calendar featuring his bookcover art; I would buy that in a heartbeat. Looking at this calendar it's almost hard to believe this is the same guy who did the covers for many popular sci-fi and fantasy books, among them the Matador series, the Dorsai series, Trade Pact Universe series, and Rhapsody series.
There is a slight vampire theme in the 2001 calendar, and there is no hint of anything science fiction. The calendar says "Heavy Metal - adult only" on the front, but should have said "Blood-Covered Bondage Babes" instead.
I write this review with a full understanding of the First Amendment. I'll probably hang up the calendar in 2001 anyway, and I will be doing some explaining to the people who are sure to raise an eyebrow over it.
Book Description
The truth has been buried for hundreds of years beneath myth, symbolism, and propaganda—but it finally comes to light in these pages and can no longer be denied. This is the story of an extraordinary journey of discovery that uncovers the existence of a serpent-worshipping cult that thrived throughout the world in ancient times and whose influences have permeated all the major religions. The cult’s central rite involved mixing together snake blood and venom in a ceremonial bowl, forging a powerful healing elixir—and the evidence shows that this ritual holds the key to solving such enigmatic mysteries as the Holy Grail, Elixir of Life, Philosopher’s Stone, and the lost city of Atlantis. It’s nothing less than a radical reinterpretation of world history.

Evaluation of The Serpent Grail by Osborn and Gardiner.......2007-08-05
Throughout recorded history, human males have had trouble using their sexuality to benefit themselves and others. Sexual energy and territorial rights have continually been the basis for most wars and human problems, individually and collectively. This book deals with the societies that have learned special ways to sublimate sexual energy.
Little boys always have to learn how, what and when to deal with their penis when sexual energy begins to arise and throughout life this is a problem and has always been a problem with all human males--and consequently females.
This book is easy to read with few technical terms and the terms are explained. Well written, plain and simple with explanations of events following in logical order. Both writers are personally interested in the topic from a layman's approach. I suspect that both authors at some point in their research, perhaps before then, and joined some branch of one of the secret societies. The authors do not deal with the dark side of secret societies nor do they hint of this anywhere in the book.
The Shining Ones refers to those that have gone through an initiation process in which they have learned how to deal with their sexual energies: how to sublimate these energies for social purposes--usually. If the methods are successful, the initiate then becomes an "enlightened or illuminated one"--a Shining One. The Shining One refers mostly to the initiate's inner feeling of energy and enlightenment--a new way of life that was spoken of by Christ and others. The initiate then feels illuminated with new energy; Shining inside, often referred to as the inner light or illumination.
Both writers collaborated also on another book, The Shining Ones, which is about some of the members of these secret societies. This book is about how humans have dealt with their sexual energies: how they have sublimated these energies via special, secret methods. The serpent or snake became a model for the human penis and how special methods allowed these initiates to use their sexual energies to help themselves and others.
Both of these books are well written and present the concepts that are the origins of all secret societies: how humans, particularly men, learn to harness their sexual energy for social purposes (usually social).
A journey into the imagination.......2007-07-01
This is a book which aims to appeal to people's prejudices and fantasies. Lack of proof and quantum leaps to dubious conclusions mark its arguments. It is a singularly unscholarly work where the diving line between fact and fiction is difficult if not impossible to discern. As a serious work it has little merit as a work pandering to people's superstitions and assumptions it may succeed.
Adventure did not ask, but no harm done.......2007-06-03
Another of the genre, "truth behind everything". The title alone is enough to draw one in, yes? Why not say it is a "secret" revealed and sell a few more? From the beginning of the "secret" of the grail it was said that unless "adventure" asked, one should not speak, or in the nascent case, write about the grail. However, when you have missed the proverbial boat by as far as this work does, it makes no difference. The truth is so simple-and that is the only way it can survive. Be entertained, but don't be fooled, as the dog clips your heal, from beginning to end, it would seem....
Another Modern Gnostic Classic.......2007-01-21
THE SERPENT GRAIL is akin to the translation of the Bible into the vernacular. In the latter case the Bible in the West had only been copied in Latin, a language the common person could not understand. Its seventeenth century translation fueled the Protestant Revolution. THE SERPENT GRAIL makes the deepest levels of occult lore accessible to people today who possess a sincere desire to delve into their innermost Self & ancestral roots. Together Gardiner and Osborn have created their own unique individual and collective version of THE GREAT WORK.
Paganism: An Introduction to Earth- Centered Religions
History: Fiction or Science? (Chronology, No. 1)
Knights Templar Encyclopedia: The Essential Guide to the People, Places, Events, and Symbols of the Order of the Temple
Fantastic.......2006-07-24
Regardless of the previous reviewers feminine angle I found this book to be amazingly concise and covering all the aspects, indeed even those supposedly left out. I have also just read Gardiner's new book Secrets of the Serpent, which goes into much more depth. The Serpent Grail is about the Grail and it's links to the serpent worshippers of the past. It reveals the elixir of life and therefore is not a mythological encyclopedia as desired by the previous reviewer. Secrets of the Serpent reveals much more than any other mythological book of the serpent and even comes up against the Da Vinci Code. The Serpent Grail is an amazing new angle on the Grail lore and one that many scholars have reviewed glowingly, so it has to be worth a look.
