Joseph Cornell (1903-72) lived in Queens with a domineering mother and severely handicapped brother while creating unique, haunting art: boxes filled with lovingly assembled objects and printed images. But this sympathetic biography demonstrates that he was more than an eccentric recluse, chronicling his friendships with other artists and his immersion in the avant-garde movements of his time. Art critic Deborah Solomon spikes her astute judgments with humor--noting her subject's fondness for epistolary relationships that spared him the unease of physical contact, she comments, "Cornell would have been great on the Internet."
Book Description
Back in Print No artist ever led a stranger life than Joseph Cornell, the self-taught American genius prized for his disquieting shadow boxes, who stands at the intersection of Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art. Legends about Cornell abound--as the shy hermit, the devoted family caretaker, the artistic innocent--but never before Utopia Parkway has he been presented for what he was: a brilliant, relentlessly serious artist whose stature has now reached monumental proportions. Cornell was haunted by dreams and visions, yet the site of his imaginings couldn't have been more ordinary: a small house he shared with his mother and invalid brother in Queens, New York. In its cluttered basement, he spent his nights arranging photographs, cut-outs, and other humble disjecta into some of the most romantic works to exist in three dimensions. Cornell was no recluse, however: admired by successive generations of vanguard artists, he formed friendships with figures as diverse as Duchamp, de Kooning, and Warhol, and had romantically charged encounters with Susan Sontag and Yoko Ono--not to mention unrequited crushes on countless shop girls and waitresses. All this he recorded compulsively in a diary that, along with his shadow boxes, forms one of the oddest and most affecting records ever made of a life. It is from such documents, and from a decade of sustained attention to Cornell, that Deborah Solomon has fashioned the definitive biography of one of America's most powerful and unusual modern artists.

Joseph Cornell, you deserve better! .......2007-03-07
Being a recent initiate into the brilliance of Joseph Cornell's work, It was with baited breath that I waited by my mailbox for this book to arrive. Finally, it was delivered- such a pretty cover! Such a marvelous title!- and then- oh dear. Here you have a very nice-looking academic woman prattling off a list of things having to do with some guy named Joseph Cornell; basically, making boring and dull that which is infinitely fascinating. This book feels like an assignment from an editor. Or worse- a square book from a well-meaning writer who hasn't learned that writing good biography takes obsessive love.
If you are an imaginative person with a couple of afternoons on hand, please read this book for the sheer informational content and supply your own poetry.
Examining the life and influences of an enigmatic artist.......2005-04-10
Deborah Solomon's biography of artist Joseph Cornell in Utopia Parkway: The Life And Work Of Joseph Cornell, joins other outstanding titles in the MFA's 'artWorks' series but stands well independently, providing a reprint of a 1977 original examining the life and influences of an enigmatic American artist. Analysis blends with personal insight to probe the influences of man prized for his disquieting shadow boxes and his influence on Surrealism, Pop and Abstract expressionism alike. Yes, there have been other coverages - but few offer the depth and authority of an art critic's research talents.
It's art, not therapy!.......2001-03-02
Solomon is a very good writer and her ability to capture images and moods is continually shattered by her excessive (and striclty amateur attempts at) psychoanalysis. For me personally, it was a constant irritant that ruined what would otherwise be a wonderful and fascinating biography.
why the psychobable?.......2000-07-31
like all the other reviewers i have an immense interest in cornell. however i found deborah solomon's constant psychological asides both banal and ultimately dulling. every page has some fatuous and often risible so-called apercu. i wanted a biography, not some fanciful and very dated exercise in psychoanalysis. shame cos there is a lot of enjoyable fact offered. cornell's own selected diary and letters published under the title The Theatre of the Mind, is the only authority on his thinking as far as i am concerned. this biographical arrogance of reducing an artist's life to a sequence of supposedly transparent motivations is so passe surely.
Immensely grateful but waiting for the next.......2000-05-20
As an antidote to my seams-bursting curiosity about Cornell, this book deserves a rating off the measly 5 star scale and into the realm of splendiferous constellations. To you Deborah Solomon I am sincerely grateful. But upon rereading Utopia Parkway seems rather thin, and at times, unfortunately, nearly patronizing. I don't doubt her respect for Cornell, but occasionally she treats him as too much of a curiosity, as if he was an eccentric she's putting into a box. Perhaps she simply had trouble understanding him. And of course she committed the unpardonable sin, and anti-Cornellian faux pas, within her pages of referring to pigeons as ugly grey scavengers. They are, as every reader of this book should know, winged urban enchanters.

Book Description
Hikaru Shindo is like any sixth-grader in Japan: a pretty normal school boy with a two-tone head of hair and a penchant for antics. One day, he finds an old bloodstained GO board in his grandfather's attic-and that's when things get really interesting. Trapped inside the GO board is Fujiwara-no-Sai, the ghost of an ancient GO master who taught the strategically complex board game to the Emperor of Japan many centuries ago. In one fateful moment, Sai becomes a part of Hikaru's consciousness and together, through thick and thin, they make an unstoppable GO-playing team. Will they be able to defeat GO players who have dedicated their lives to the game? Will Sai achieve the "Divine Move" so he'll finally be able to rest in peace? Begin your journey with Hikaru and Sai in this first volume of HIKARU NO GO.

Hikaru has refused to play against Akira Toya but he has joined the Haze Middle School Go Club. Akira joins the Kaio Middle School Club in hopes that the two will meet in one of the periodic school tournaments. Of course, Akira is a million lightyears ahead of anyone on the Kaio team when it comes to Go. While some players on his team admire his skill and want to learn from him, his arrival has thrown the hierarchy of the team into chaos, and has made some feel a great deal of resentment towards him. Three of the members plan to knock him off his pedestal in a dishonest scheme to shame him. Meanwhile, Hikaru's team might not be able to enter the upcoming tournament if they can't find a third player. They post an extremely difficult Go problem on the school bulletin board, thinking that whoever solves it could be their next prospect. A kid named Yuki Mitani solves it but unfortunately he sees Go only as a method of making money on games he bets with gullible old timers. In addition, he has a fondness for cheating. Will Hikaru and Sai be able to reform him and add him to the Haze Go Club?
I'm not going to lie and say that my knowledge of how to play Go or understand all the strategies involved has improved after 3 volumes, but that doesn't even really matter when reading this manga. Obata's art and Hotta's writing convey the suspense in each game and the emotional content without the reader having to understand each and every move. I'll probably never pick up a Go tile myself but I still really enjoy this manga. Maybe it's because the characters invest so much passion and honor in the game they play? Or maybe it's seeing them try to improve their skills to where they're worthy of calling each other equals? A good read even if you have no interest in the game itself.
Great fourth book!.......2005-07-07
Well I have read the 1-3 books in he series hikaru no go and I have found them to all be great! Then one day I picked up the fourth in the series and started reading it and it was AMAZING! Hikaru is at a go tournament and he gets bored so he decides to go walk around and he sees someone playing go on the computer (which you can actually do). He finds it very interesting and so he wants to play it too, but there is one problem...he doesnt have a computer. So he goes to Yuki's sister's computer almost everyday to play go. He makes a username called Sai and becomes a very well known player on the inernet and everyone wants to play him. Nobody knows who he really is and thinks that he is a pro. Akira hears about this and he makes a username to play against Hikaru. Akira resigns because he can right away tell that it is Hikaru. Now Akira is then the only person who knows who the username Sai is. This manga is a very good page turner that I loved. Hikaru no go is one of my favorite series and I think that everyone that likes good manga should read it!

THE BEST -- non-violent manga!.......2007-01-06
What a find! My family loves anime and manga but we have a problem with much of it because it is too violent. This series centers around the Japanese game of Go. The premise is that a middle school boy, Hikaru, becomes the "avatar" of the ghost of a Go master. The Go master plays games through Hikaru -- and then Hikaru becomes interested in GO in his own right. The premise and the story line allow us to see an interesting aspect of Japanese culture and the rivalries inherent in Go provides fertile ground for character development. My seven year old son LOVES this series and can't wait for number 9 to come out. He has even become interested in learning to play Go (playing with his father) and asked for a Go board for Christmas!

Remember the things Mother used to say? Erma Bombeck remembers them all and now she's using them on her own kids! With clever illustrations by Bob Keane, these really funny, too-true observations on family and kids and why it shouldn't work but does, is a wonderful antitdote to the daily problems and crises that every family faces. With Erma Bombeck in your corner, laughter is the best coach you can have....

Just Wait Til You Have Children of Your Own.......2006-03-24
Erma Bombeck is great! If you have children, or even if your children are grown and gone like mine, you will still get chuckles and remember when!
so funny and witty..............2006-02-19
For anyone is a parent of a teenager, or anyone who is interested in reading more about that complex, and turbulent dynamic, this book is for you. I first read this book when I was eleven years old, and it just got me reading and enjoying more of Erma Bombeck's unique and broad brand of humor. To top that off, the little comic interludes, illustrating themes and common day-to-day interactions between parents and children, are drawn beautifully by Bil Keane, who went on to illustrate the successful comic strip, "Family Circus," for years.
Whether Erma Bombeck is taking on housekeeping, driving lessons, or hairstyles, she is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. Granted, this book was originally written in the 1970s and there is a slightly dated hippie quality to the look of the teenagers in this book, the themes ring true today, as much as thirty years ago. Parents and their teenage children speak different languages, diverge greatly in their tastes in music, friends, romantic partners and lifestyle. Yet, God has put them together, to teach one another lessons in adversity, communication (or lack thereof) and exasperation!
Bombeck's talent shines brightly here. I also reccomend you check out "Motherhood: The Second Oldest Profession," "The Grass is Greener Over the Septic Tank," "If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What am I Doing in the Pits?", and "When You Begin to Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home." They are also great examples of her comedic writing, and warm insight into life and its day-to-day mini-disasters!
A little dated.......2004-06-12
The book was first published in 1970 and the text and the illustrations are showing their age. Let's face it, the kids who where teenagers in it are now in their mid to late 40s. Of course with the 2000s being into the 1970s retro look and sound, maybe what's old is new.
That's not to say it wasn't a quick and enjoyable read and Bil Keane's illustrations are humorous too. I recommend flipping through the book once just to enjoy his illustrations. Imagine the Family Circus kids as hippy teenagers. Actually come to think of it, the Family Circus kids probably are actually in their mid to late forties as well.
It means "no worries" for the rest of your days!.......2003-09-23
I've been a fan of Erma Bombeck since *long* before "The Grass is Always Greener.." and teaming her yolks with Bil Keane was a stroke - of genius. Never picturing the Keane children before in a post-pubescent manner, the effect on the text was stunning. Did Jeffy really grow mutton-chop sideburns? Was Dolly suffering emetophilia as Ms. Bombeck suggests? In so many ways, this book is like Disney's "The Lion King," only without the Uncle Scar, and the part with the hyenas. I'd recommend it highly for the witty text, but the binding was a problem as the pages tend to slip out if you bend the book open too far. Still, four stars for Mrs. Bombeck and Bil!
A great combo.......2002-12-23
Pairing Bil Keane (Of "Family Circus" fame) and Erma Bombeck was a stroke of genius. These two work very well together - it's a shame they didn't do more work together.
Of course, the title is the "mother's curse" - if you had a mom, you may remember her using that line on you. I often wonder if that's why some people don't have children.
This book takes you thru "expert" advice - and than shows you how the situation plays out in the real world. If you are a parent of a teen, you may want this book just so you can remember they don't stay teenagers forever (they _don't_ , really - tho sometimes it's hard to believe).
So get this book, find a quiet spot (HA! what's that, the bathroom?) and enjoy - it's cheaper and more fun that psychotherapy.
