Now he's looking for a missing stockholder known only as "Unknown Man No. 89." But his missing man isn't "unknown" to everyone: a pretty blonde hates his guts and a very nasty dude named Royal wants him dead in the worst way. Which is very unfortunate for Jack Ryan, who is suddenly caught in the crossfire of a lethal triple-cross and as much a target as his nameless prey.

Best I've ever read.......2005-09-23
This may be the best book I have ever read. I'm a big fan of the movies, "Get Shorty" and "The Big Bounce" so I picked this up just because I liked the writer. I just ordered 2 more of his books, I highly recommend Unknown Man #89 though.
A Safe Bet.......2005-09-20
When you're in the mood for an Elmore Leonard book, I recommend reading this one. It definately satisfies, because, A: it's a page turner, and B: the characters are top-notch and the setting is Detroit (mostly). Why do we read Elmore
Leonard? Because he is a master of his craft. And nowhere is that more evident than in Unknown Man #89. It's not deep, or life-changing, or life-affirming, but it is a good read. Especially if you hanker to get lost in the world of a seedy 1970's Detroit.
I think this is my fourth E.L. book, and I haven't yet read anything he's written past 1979. There seem to be heavy similarities in his books from this era. You always know what you're going to get, kind of like when you buy a Slayer albumn. But, much like Slayer, Leonard rarely disappoints.
First Leonard Read!.......2005-04-01
I have always enjoyed the Elmore Leonard movie adaptations, so I thought I'd give his work a try. I loved "Get Shorty", "Out of Sight", and enjoyed the others as well. I researched the best one to read and based on the reviews here, I chose this one. I'm sorry I can only give it 3 stars. Read on for the reasons!
*********SPOILER************
There was so much happening throughout the book that could have added some inetresting and exciting action, but instead it just ended terribly. All of the sudden Ryan is in love with Denise? What about his girlfriend he already had? He just up and goes to Florida and then we read where he is in her office telling her he loves Denise while trying to get her to type a fake court injunction for them. And virgil was supposed to be such a tough character and then to just dispose of him and Tunafish so easily along with Raymond. It was as if Leonard didn't know how to end it or what to do with everyone, so he just eliminated the "hardened criminal" types of the plot. So, the end is Ryan, Denise, and Perez just all get together and be friendly and settle the whole deal? Give me a break. Should have done that to begin with and 3 people wouldn't have had to die. And why title it Unknown Man #89? Bobby Leary was not unknown. They knew who he was from the beginning, the morgue tagged him unknown.
************SPOILER OVER*******************
The story had potential, but fizzled out the last half of the book. All those parts of the story that started the book were left unfinished and some, or most, were pointless to introduce in the first place. I only finished it because I kept hoping it would get better and, unfortunately, it didn't. Sorry, I just couldn't buy it.
Needless to say, I'm not going to be picking up anymore Elmore Leonard books. I'll stick to the movie adaptations.
No One Does it Better than Leonard!.......2003-07-16
I have always been an Elmore Leonard fan and have read everything he's published. I just can't get enough of him. His concise way of writing is superb. He doesn't overengage in descriptives, thank goodness - that gets boring - yet manages to convey exactly what he wants more succinctly than any author I've ever read. The characters never disappoint and the sense of humor displayed is simply unsurpassable. Another fantastic book by an author who is the best.
slick crime story; better than average Elmore Leonard book.......2003-07-06
As with most of the other amazon.com reviewers before me I am a loyal Elmore Leonard fan. And it is likely only Elmore Leonard fans would pick up the (relatively obscure) 'Unknown Man #89'. This is unfortunate because most of the world will miss out on this compact jewel.
'Unknown Man #89' is one of those stories hard to describe without giving the plot away. Broadly speaking we have con artists trying to make a fast buck off folks whom they thought would be total suckers. Wrong. Frustration and violence ensue. While not winning any awards for originality 'Unknown Man #89' is very well written. Elmore Leonard does a brilliant job on the characterizations, and the prose is very slick. There is also some humour, albeit rather rude and crude.
Bottom line: certainly among Leonard's better efforts. Recommended.

A Hidden Classic.......2006-04-24
A hero with a troubled past. A modern day damsel in distress. Villains with competing agendas who are themselves interesting but keep you guessing. What's not to love? This is Elmore Leonard at his best, epitomizing the genre. Several mysteries come into play as the story unfolds. Perhaps the biggest mystery of all, though, is why this book never got the recognition it deserved or caught the right attention to merit transformation into a great movie. Whether or not this happens one day, the book remains a great read.
great.......1999-05-07
My first approach to Elmore Leonard had been "Get Shorty".Nothing especial. But this crime story is really involving and impressing.Absolutely to read.

I loved this book Ms. Harlem was a very smart young woman and that's what you love about the character. I only wished the author would have developed her relationship with York a little better!!
The Coldest Winter Ever?.......2007-04-12
The Coldest Winter Ever, this is NOT. The story line was ok. The characters were thought out, but many parts of the story were unrealistic, and others just didn't fit in with the rest of the story. I would borrow it from a friend.
Wheww.......2007-02-20
This book is a fresh breath from many current 'RBAN HIP HOP' fiction stories. Very surprised at the delivery, and twits in the plot. I was pleasnantly surprised to see each character was well drawn out.

A Roller Coaster Ride.......2001-01-29
The Ladies of Leisure Books Club of Columbia, TN chosen for our book review, "If I Ruled the World". The book was a roller coaster ride that we all enjoyed. It was filled with action, killing and emotion. Allan Wright believed money may not buy happiness buy it came so close. Jack Parish was a mad man, militiaman, and racial hatred killer who believed he was preparing for his heavens calling by killing. We had the pleasure to discuss the book with the author Ray Burton. We loved Ray personality; we gratefully appreciated his presence. Buy the book and enjoy the ride.

Book Description
The electrifying space epic reaches an explosive climax
when one techno-mage battles the ultimate evil
As billions die and the flames of destruction rage unchecked, the Shadows seem poised for absolute victory. Soon the entire galaxy will fall to their evil. But the war isn't over . . . not yet. At long last, in a forgotten corner of the universe, Galen has finally won the Circle's permission to leave the techno-mage hiding place. He is the only mage who has faced the Shadows and lived, the only one who possesses the unstoppable Spell of Destruction.
Galen's orders are clear. Though the galaxy is being torn apart by bloody conflict–in which his powers might tip the balance–he is to locate only three key enemies and kill them. But Galen has unearthed the Shadows' darkest secret–and discovered a monstrous truth about himself.
In this desperate, apocalyptic battle, there's no telling who will be the victor. Or if there will be any survivors at all . . .

Many feminists have been skeptical about traditional spirituality, and their mistrust has not been entirely unfounded. The forms of self-sacrifice often required by the spiritual life--including silence and suppression of desire--are conditions that have been imposed on women for centuries. But, as Carol Lee Flinders makes clear, spirituality and feminism do not have to be diametrically opposed. Drawing on Western and Eastern spiritual traditions, Flinders traces her own developing awareness of the "mutual necessity" of the two disciplines and makes provocative suggestions about the potential of a feminist movement guided by spiritual principles.
Book Description
In At the Root of This Longing, Flinders identifies the four key points at which the paths of spirituality and feminism seem to collide - vowing silence vs. finding voice, relinquishing ego vs. establishing `self', resisting desire vs. reclaiming the body, and enclosure vs. freedom - and sets out to discover not only the sources of these conflicts, but how they can be reconciled. With a sense of urgency brought on by events in her own life, Flinders deals with the alienation that women have experienced not only from themselves and each other, but from the sacred. She finds inspiration in the story of fourteenth-century mystic Julian of Norwich and her direct experience of God, in India's legendary Draupadi, who would not allow a brutal physical assault to damage her sense of personal power, as well as in Flinders's own experiences as a meditation teacher and practitioner. Flinders reveals that spirituality and feminism are not mutually exclusive at all but very much require one another.
Customer Reviews:
Like Finding a Kindred Spirit in a Slightly Unexpected Place.......2005-12-31
This book called out to me from the shelf of my local bookstore and it was as if I knew Flinders and she knew me.
Perhaps we are both "Upper Middle Class Female Would Be Mystics" as another reviewer seemed to spitefully proclaim - more importantly, Flinders was able to see into the heart of women who before may not have been opened for viewing, so to speak.
I was especially taken with the segments on St. Clare of Assissi, someone new to me - a female compatriot of St. Francis of Assissi. How wondrous is this!
The book launched me on a full scale investigation of St. Clare, who I prefer to refer to as "Chiara" - her name in Italian.
The book is lushly written, poetic yet friendly in tone. Highly recommended and will return repeatedly.
Couldn't get past the first few chapters..............2004-05-18
The author is certainly writing for a target audience.......as one other reviewer said, white, upper-middle-class, female would-be mystics. I found the stories of life on the commune mind-numbing (then again, I was born in Berkeley in 1970, so that hippie commune kumbayah stuff reminds me of eating carob when I was a kid) and the rest of what I did manage to read alienating.......zzzzzzzzzzzz.......I am not saying this is a bad book at all, just that it's focus was so narrow that it completely lost my interest. The language was so fuzzy and woo-woo that it just irritated my Gen X (for lack of a better word) postpunk sensibility. It's a shame, too, as I was really looking forward to this book and hoping it would assist me in reconciling my own struggle between feminism and spirituality. C'est la vie.
Transformational.......2001-12-15
This book is critical for women and feminist men alike. All will walk away re-examining their own views and values. A particular idea that is staying with me (on this reading) is the idea of "retreat > magnification > transformation." The book itself provides such an experience by allowing the reader to go within his or her own thoughts on the two themes, putting a magnifying glass to literature, sociology, history, and the writer's own history to illuminate the topics, thus creating the opportunity to transform or critically change one's one view of the Journey. As suggested on the back cover, I am recommending it to all I know and encouraging a local discussion group.
Essential.......2001-01-25
This book was profoundly useful in helping me reclaim my spirituality after having left the church in anger years ago. Ms. Flinders identifies elements essential in helping women find their wholeness. The book is written clearly and beautifully. I recommend it whole-heartedly.
Highly Recommended.......2000-05-16
This book was excellent and thought-provoking. The topics raised are pertinent to every woman who values her spiritual and feminist sides. Dr. Flinders examines disparate issues which are troubling to many women. She does this in a way that is meant not so much to solve the issues but simply to raise them as subjects to be examined and brought to the light of day. I have recommended this book to many people and will continue to do so. This is a wonderful book!
