Book Description
The Poor Mouth relates the story of one Bonaparte O'Coonassa, born in a cabin in a fictitious village called Corkadoragha in western Ireland equally renowned for its beauty and the abject poverty of its residents. Potatoes constitute the basis of his family's daily fare, and they share both bed and board with the sheep and pigs. A scathing satire on the Irish, this work brought down on the author's head the full wrath of those who saw themselves as the custodians of Irish language and tradition when it was first published in Gaelic in 1941.
Customer Reviews:
One Of The Funniest 20th Century Short Novels.......2006-02-28
The bleak atmosphere and the beautiful, flowing prose in "The Poor Mouth" are completely at odds, which is what makes this novel so hilarious. O'Coonassa has no idea what's happening to him much of the time, but he dutifully records it as best he can, with amazingly comical results.
The concept here is much like a Buster Keaton film, in that the protagonist is presumably ignorant, but he keeps a sharp eye on events, and he's basically good-hearted (except when he has to resort to stealing a pig or a chicken or some silverware, just to stay alive).
Satire on the myth-makers.......2005-11-27
Lighten up guys. This is satire. Flan O'Brien is satirising those - like Yeats - who mythologised a Celtic and Gaelic past that never existed. The spirit is like Paddy Kananagh - but it's satire rather than gritty realism. Understand?
side-splitting.......2003-11-05
Have you ever had a laughing fit while reading on a bus? It was almost enough to have me committed.Although not personally aware of any Irish in my blood, the way this erupted in me makes it a strong chance.
It has never been better explained why so many Irish ended up in America and elsewhere abroad. A true story!
Not for Nationalists.......2003-07-07
This book is an inside joke, and a classic at that. It is a grand send up of professional Irish (both at home and abroad). As example, consider a book written in Gaelic making sport of the Gaelic movement by means of a Gaelic festival. ( In ourland of the professional ethnic festival, this might serve as an effective antidote to "Irish" nights and "Scots weekends.") If you are inclined to romanticize villages of the old sod dominated by pigs, mud, rain and potatos, avoid this work. If you want a great classic of the jaundiced eye school of literature, read this book. By the way, some of the fun lies in the many parodies of Irish literary works in the assorted chapters; knowledge of the genre helps.
Amusing Story.......2002-12-28
It helps to have read other Irish literature first to appreciate this book.

Maddie and Reese were such great characters! Although I found the mail-order bride scenario hard to believe, once these two were together, they were perfect for each other. Reese was a typical stubborn male, and Maddie never let him get away with anything. If you're looking for a romance with steamy love scenes, strong characters and great descriptions of location and everyday life, this is it!
An engaging and sizzling story - 4.5 stars.......2006-06-11
Years ago, Reese Duncan owned a very profitable ranch. He was a wealthy man and one of the most powerful ranchers in the country. Yet, he was foolish enough to fall in love with a beautiful woman who, after only two years of marriage, filed for divorce and took him to the cleaners. After the raw deal he got in his divorce, all Reese wants is a woman who will be happy to live in Montana and be a good mother to their kids; for although he is happy to remain single for the rest of his life, he wants to hear children's laughter in the ranch, and have his own heirs to pass on the legacy that was also passed on to him. Therefore, Reese decides to advertise for a wife.
Enter Madelyn Patterson. Sophisticated and beautiful, she is everything that Reese isn't looking for in a wife. While sitting in her New York office one day, she comes across Reese's ad and was immediately intrigued. After all, she has always been curious as a cat and there is just something so irresistible about a man advertising for a wife. So she pens a short letter thinking that she probably wouldn't even hear back from him... except she does.
From the moment he sees her, Reese knows that Madelyn is the wrong woman. Yet there is no denying the chemistry between them; and she seems to really like the idea of living away from the city, and is willing to live and work in a ranch and start a family. Despite his doubts, they end up getting married, not knowing that they are both in for a tough fight. As much as he tries, Reese cannot help being drawn to Madelyn. As for Madelyn, all she wants in return is Reese's love, and she refuses to give up until Reese realizes what is in front of him and admits his feelings for her.
DUNCAN'S BRIDE is an engaging and sexually charged novel featuring a sexy and brooding hero and a spirited heroine. I loved the chemistry between Reese and Madelyn. From the very start, I knew I was in for some sizzling and entertaining read. The author has done well in depicting the physical labor and financial hardship that Reese has had to endure after his bitter divorce. I agree that there are times when he acts like a total jerk, however, given what he has gone through for so many years, I couldn't help but feel for Reese's plight. And believe me, Madelyn is no shrinking violet. I guess the fact that she is independent and stubborn adds to the fun as we see a real battle of wills between the two of them.
I greatly enjoyed this book and look forward to reading LOVING EVANGELINE, which features Madelyn's brother, Robert.
Reissue.......2005-12-05
For all practical purposes, the "hero" is verbally and emotionally abusive.
The is a reissue of Silhouette Intimate Moments No. 349 from 1990 and would have been outdated in its attitude concerning how it is acceptable for a man to treat his family at that date.
GREAT READ..........2003-08-24
I love a book like "Duncan's Bride"..it was fast paced, had well fleshed out characters, and a story that zeroed in on them alone. There was not one outside source or person that took away from what this book was really about...Reese and Maddie. I LOVE a good character driven romance. I would highly recommend reading this one.
one of Howard's best.......2002-03-19
Very steamy romance novel that you will want to read again and again (provided of course that you can deal with the hero's alpha male personality). I highly recommend this book particularly if you are a fan of Howards Mackenzie series.

One twist after another!.......2004-03-04
What a fun book this was! Never knowing what was going to happen next was the best part, and just when you thought it might slow down, NOT! We are pulled back into action scene after scene.
The characters are well drawn out, the hero hot and sexy, the heroine strong and spunky. Their relationship sends up sparks from one wild ride to the next. The dialogue is realistic and oh, so fun!
Wonderful first book! Readers will not be disappointed!
A keeper!!.......2004-03-04
I absolutely, whole-heartedly agree with the reader from Sacramento. I don't usually buy books by new authors, but am very glad that I did this time. Diana Duncan writes as skillfully as Linda Howard or Fiona Brand, to name only two. I can only surmise that she'll continue to write as well or better. The book had excellent dialogue, a true keep-it-or-heave-it selling point for me. Both characters were very likable, the hero macho without being overbearing, the heroine sweet, intelligent and vulnerable without being annoying. Another selling point.
Hope Diana writes another one, or three, soon!
Heart Pounding Romance and Action!.......2004-03-04
This was the best romance story I have read in years! I can't believe this was the author's first book. It has a great story line that leaves you breathless waiting to find out what will happen next. All the details neatly tie together, with lots of action and well-researched details. And there is SOOO much passion between the two characters it just about scorches the pages!
Even if you don't read romances, you should read this one. I can't wait for her next books!
Bulletproof Bride is GREAT FUN!.......2004-02-27
WOW! What a FUN book to read! Can't believe this is a debut author. The story starts with a BANG and never slows down. The heroine is cute, smart and funny and the hero is TO DIE FOR!
Sort of like "Romancing the Stone" with some 007 thrown in, this book will NOT disappoint. It has something for everyone to like--action, humor, sensuous romance.
Can't wait to read more by this author!

“The second entry in Feather’s Matchmaker trilogy (following The Bachelor List) is a charming romp through 19th-century London featuring the Duncan sisters, who are trying to hold their family together financially by running a matchmaking service and producing the suffragist scandal sheet, The Mayfair Lady. When the paper is sued for libel, Prudence Duncan enlists the help of fierce barrister Sir Gideon Malvern.... [B]efore long, Gideon finds himself as involved with Prue as he is with the Mayfair Lady case. Readers may be surprised by the setting, which is unusual for historical romances; here the automobile and the telephone have already been invented.”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
“Interesting characters keep the sensual story lively, proving once again why Feather is so very popular. Readers will eagerly anticipate the adventures of the third Duncan sister.”

Customer Reviews:
Good and worth a read, but not the best (of the series or from Jane Feather).......2007-07-13
I've read a good number of Jane Feather's books and this is not my favorite, though it is worth reading; if I had to do it over, I would have gotten it from the library and not bought it, since I don't think it will be on my reread shelf. It is the second in the Duncan Sisters Trilogy, but was actually the last one that I read; I don't remember what I thought about the first book, "The Bachelor List," (I have ready a lot historical romances) but I greatly enjoyed the third, "The Wedding Game."
Setting: England, 1906
Sensuality rating: 5 (a couple kissing scenes, one love scene, all were well-paced within the story and authentic)
PROS:
(1) The chemistry between the hero (Sir Gideon Malvern) and the heroine (Honorable Prudence Duncan) was good; their personalities clashed immediately, but it is fun to watch their relationship develop and I think they were a good pairing
(2) Constance, Prudence, and Chastity (the three Duncan sisters) are endearing and their affection for each other is always evident; they care for one another and for their father, and they really come across as three sisters whom you would enjoy being friends with
(3) Of course, the hero is important and I have to say I liked Gideon, despite his somewhat-authoritarian know-it-all attitude; he has a good heart, his relationship with his daughter is endearing, and seeing him vulnerable at times is irresistible!
(4) As mentioned above, Gideon has a daughter (9-year-old Sarah) who lives with him and not his ex-wife (remember, early 1900s so although divorce is not at all common, it's not completely unheard of); he comes off as a good father, he cares for Sarah greatly and doesn't have an oppressive view of women's roles (Sarah attends a very good school, her governess talks to her about women's suffrage, etc.).
(5) "The Bride Hunt" is a quick read and doesn't bog you down or grow tedious; the story is fast-paced, entertaining, and I became attached to the characters.
CONS:
First, there were NO major issues, but there's always something you can say, so ...
(1) The fact that the sisters keep Lord Duncan in the dark about the family finances annoys me: he's a grown man, so I really think they should tell him the truth, have him face facts, and not just try to stay one step ahead. We hear many times that this is what Lady Duncan would have done (their mother passed away) and would want them to do, but I was bothered.
(2) Also regarding Lord Duncan, I was annoyed he is shown to consistently support Lord Barclay. The story is that Lord Barclay has raped women working in his household and when they get pregnant he throws them out with nothing - if this were true, I doubt he is pleasant in all other ways, so how does Lord Duncan not see his "friend" is a horrible person? Also, how do the sisters not get annoyed that their father is friends with a rapist? This was inconsistent, and the only reason they were made to continue being friends was because it was necessary for the plot later on (can't say more).
Cure for insomnia.......2006-12-28
From the back cover:
No sooner had the Duncan sisters' Personals serice turned a profit than their controversial newspaper, THE MAYFAIR LADY, offended a powerful earl--who is now determined to ruin them with a lawsuit. In dire need of counsel, the women turn to England's most-sought-after young barrister...
Sir Gideaon Malvern is notorious for his aggressive style--and his love of a challenge. Spirited Prudence, with her beauty unsuccessfully hidden behind spectacles and frumpy clothes, provides him with exactly that. But how in the world will the Duncan sisters be able to afford Gideon's fee? Prudence proposes a barter: Gideon defends their case; they find him a bride. It's an exchange of services even this most cynical, single barrister can't refuse.
And my review:
I was wary of trying Jane Feather again, as I'd been thoroughly bored by one of her books (THE ACCIDENTAL BRIDE) years before. But when I saw this at the thrift store for only 50 cents, I decided to give this author another try, since most writers have at least one "bomb" in their career, and I try not to write them off my list after only one unsatisfying book.
But THE BRIDE HUNT was so boring! I actually found myself distracted from the book by my husband's video game. Yes, it was that unengaging! I couldn't even get to page 50. Nothing really seemed to happen. I felt like a lot of this book was "catch-up" for those who hadn't read the first book in the trilogy (I hadn't), and the characters all seemed flat to me. None of them seemed real, and I just didn't really care about them. And though the threat of a lawsuit and financial ruin loomed, it just didn't have the "oomph" of good characters to back it up. The back cover blurb says that Prudence is "spirited". I didn't see any indication of that. She was pretty "blah" to me. And the hero didn't do much more for me, either.
Jane Feather obviously has a big following; I just won't be counted among that number.
The Bride Hunt.......2006-11-07
This was a fun romance novel. Not too much of the ridiculous sex stuff, which is fine by me. The sisters were entertaining and fun. A quick, fun, easy read.
Jane Feather is no Jane Austen.......2006-10-10
There were three story lines in this book, and none of them were very interesting. The story of the three sisters' relationship to each other and their matchmaking service had the potential to be amusing (as a similar story was done so well in Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice), but instead was lifeless and plodding. The second story about the civil suit and trial was trite and unrealistic. And the third story, the romance between Gideon and Prudence, suffered from a lack of development. They didn't spend much time together as a couple because Prudence was always with her sisters or working on the newspaper or trial.
Altogether, this book put me off Jane Feather. I doubt that I'll try another one of Feather's books anytime soon, if at all.
Loved it!.......2005-10-10
I loved this book! Prudence has to go to court to protect her father and the family newspaper, while at the same time keeping her identity a secret. The only part I didn't like ***SPOILER*** was when Gideon's ex showed up. I didn't really think that added to the plot at all. I would have been happier if it had been left out all together. Other than that, it was highly satisfactory.

I love this book........2007-03-19
I love this book. One of my business partners who I admire referred this book to me to help me work out some problems I was having in my business. Your Faith Is Your Fortune is a book that I will be reading many times during my lifetime.
The Color Of Faith .......2007-01-04
Like all of Neville's books and lectures, this book exceeds conventional thought and takes the reader on a splendid ride to the depths of what true faith means.......your consciousness on a soul level is where all lies and to tap into that incredible source is to open all doors to a treasure beyond your own wildest dreams. The reading of this book inspired my poem "The Color Of Faith."
THIS BOOK IS A TREASURE!.......2006-09-24
I had to order this book because I couldn't find it in the bookstores, or the library. After reading this book, I cannot help but wonder why this guy -"NEVILLE" is not more available! I came across Neville via reading what "other people who bought this book also bought" here on AMAZON. I went on the reviews/ratings and decided to buy the book. I was NOT disappointed! This is a fabulous book!
I have been reading metaphysical type books for a while now, and I have a feeling that a lot of the other, more recent authors of metapysical self-help type books have probably read and studied books by "Neville" before they wrote their books. The thing is, this book has information that I hadn't read anywhere else before.
The title page has a sentence under the title that says:
"Man's faith in God is measured by his confidence in himself" -Well, that struck me as interesting right off the bat.
Neville says that "When man sees the Bible as a great psychological drama with all of its characters and actors as the personified qualities and attributes of his own conciousness, then-and then only- will the Bible reveal to him the light of its symbology." The author reveals what many of the popular stories in the Bible really mean.
As I was reading this, I was thinking about the material that is presented here, and I wondered why I hadn't come across this gem of a book earlier. Then I realized that all things come to us at just the right time. I can see where, depending on one's beliefs, the material here could well be rejected by some who have been conditioned to beleive differently. As far as that goes, I feel that each one of us knows when something rings true for us, as well as when it doesn't. That's the thing you have to look for in any information that comes across your path.... ask yourself if it feels right for you.
This book really made me think about things differently. In a positive way. To me, this book is a treasure!
Your Faith Is Your Fortune.......2005-07-19
Wonderfully insightful book as are all of the books I have read by Neville. The world should read it and heed it.
Neville explains the Bible's spiritual meaning........2003-03-11
I study Neville's material daily and can honestly verify that he is a very outstanding teacher, mystic and Bible scholar. In this volume that is Neville's first and perhaps most mystical book, he explains the meaning of different biblical events.
The book consists of rather short chapters. Each chapter is devoted to a certain biblical theme which Neville takes into discussion. Then he will proceed to explain you the spiritual and psychological truths that the theme includes.
This book is about spiritual awakening and understanding the power of your consciousness... not so much about self-help as self-help is generally understood as get-rich quickly scheme.
If you are looking for get-rich-quick books -- this title is not for you. However, if you seek to understand the deeper meaning of the Bible - this is a book to buy.
If you think you know your Bible, I challenge you to buy this book for your perception is going to change as a result of reading this book.
Very informative.
