Author most recently of a stunningly clear-eyed memoir, This Boy's Life, Tobias Wolff's new collection of short stories maintains a similar steady gaze on his fictional creations. The author steels himself with a fine sense of irony and an awareness of moral ambiguity against the unjust suffering that is part of life. Wolff is a master at building tension, as in his description of the machinery threatening the little boy in the title story, or of a father's observing a dog attack his son in "Chain." His naturalistic, powerfully written stories explore the human response to the random and unexpected blows of fate.

Book Description

One of the sinuous and subtly crafted stories in Tobias Wolff's new collection--his first in eleven years--begins with a man biting a dog. The fact that Wolff is reversing familiar expectations is only half the point. The other half is that Wolff makes the reversal seem inevitable: the dog has attacked his protagonist's young daughter. And everywhere in The Night in Question, we are reminded that truth is deceptive, volatile, and often the last thing we want to know.

A young reporter writes an obituary only to be fired when its subject walks into his office, very much alive. A soldier in Vietnam goads his lieutenant into sending him on increasingly dangerous missions. An impecunious mother and son go window-shopping for a domesticity that is forever beyond their grasp. Seamless, ironic, dizzying in their emotional aptness, these fifteen stories deliver small, exquisite shocks that leave us feeling invigorated and intensely alive.

5 out of 5 stars great collection of amazing works.......2007-09-10

Wolff is an amazing writer. He says more in these short stories than other writers say in entire books. I heard Bullet in the Brain on This American Life and I had to buy the book. I am so glad that I did. Kids will be studying these someday in school.

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best Short Story Writers Ever........2006-11-04

I liked this collection but, don't kill me, I thought In The Garden of the North American Martyrs was better. Maybe it's my imagination or something about the timing of my reading each, but with The Night in Question I thought that at times Wolff was packing too much into his sentences, too much insight. It was all trenchant observation and inspiration, but those pockets of narrative threw the rest of the story off kilter for me and detracted from what I liked so much about In the Garden: that the stories are so simple and -- within that -- so elegantly complex. This could be my imagination; I'm not sure.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. But I second everybody who said Wolff takes ordinary occurrences and portrays them beautifully and, as the pieces come together, with so much significance. Thanks also to the person who mentioned Carver. I agree, it would have been nice to see his writing mature.

If you haven't read any of Wolff's books or are thinking of getting this book, definitely do. Buy In the Garden too.

5 out of 5 stars Wolff Has Yet To Disappoint.......2006-04-09

Tobias Wolff has written yet another fantastic collection of short stories with The Night in Question. Wolff has yet to disappointment me with any of his writings thus far, and since I believe I've read all of his works but for one or two, it does not seem as though that may be a possibility. The Night in Question is a collection dealing with all too human aspects in a series of stories that are unlikely, but certainly not beyond the realm of possibility. The peculiarity is not the focus in Wolff's stories; rather, it's the human reaction to the peculiarities that make his writing rich and enlightening.

Once again, I recommend virtually any of Wolff's work with supreme confidence, and The Night in Question is no exception. My particular favorites in this work were "Flyboys," "The Life of the Body," and one that was very unusual for Wolff, "Bullet in the Brain."

5 out of 5 stars Masterful, Moving, Magical.......2005-05-30

Before I picked up this book I was only vaguely aware of Tobias Wolff, never having, as far as I can recall, read anything of his. I did remember that he had written a memoir of his peripatetic childhood that was praised probably fifteen years ago. I was unprepared for the power and grace of this collection of short stories published in 1996. A little research on the Internet tells me that Wolff is primarily a short story writer -- he has certainly found his niche in that, although I gather he has recently written a novel -- and is a professor at Stanford. But, most of all, he is a born story-teller. This is not to say that one is not also aware of the lapidary quality of his writing. My point is that even absent his writing skill he would still be someone you'd want to engage in conversation, or rather someone you'd like to sit and listen to as he spins yarns about the mundane. The mundane is his subject, but like all good writers, he puts it in such a perspective as to make it new and insightful.

Others before me, here at Amazon, have written about certain of the short stories here. The stories' subject matter is, generally, that of youth and young adulthood, and most importantly, about observation. His protagonists seem to have a preternatural writer's eye, which is part of what I look for in fiction. That's one of the great things about a great writer -- that ability to see things in ways most of us don't.

My favorite story? Probably 'Firelight,' about a boy and his hapless but courageous mother who go to look at apartments. Simple plot, but with deep implications about belonging, what home and family is, and about hope. The coda of this story, with the little boy all grown up and with a family of his own, tells us, as so often in Wolff's stories, how childhood experience colors our adult lives. Beautiful. I suppose now I'll have to go and read everything Wolff has written. Nice to contemplate.

5 out of 5 stars A master of the quiet art.......2004-01-22

Tobias Wolff's 14 stories in this collection is quiet, spare, measured - and absolutely stellar. Wolff can take a mundane, everyday experience and thru his meticulous craftsmanship dig into the depths to mine it for every nuance of emotional significance. Nothing is present in any of his stories that doesn't serve a purpose: not a dog, a twig, a sweater, or a smile. Everything moves the stories forward and shows us more about each character and his/her relationship to others. "Firelight," a story I've now read several times, is my favorite: a boy and his single mom, stranded in a university town, spend their weekends looking at houses and apartments for rent, knowing they can't afford any of them. At the end of the long day, they're invited inside the last house, one where a university professor lives with his wife and daughter. The story, told from the boy's POV, is bittersweet and focuses on a sense of being an outsider to the comforts of home, the warmth of the fireside - but he realizes that all is not as it appears within this family that he still envies.
Absolutely wonderful collection.

              5 out of 5 stars ****SCOTTISH HEAVEN****.......2007-02-10

This book is for all of us Scottish fans. They were all great and on my KEEPER shelf. Worth buying and reading.

1 out of 5 stars boring, boring, and boring.......2006-09-19

This was one of the most boring collection of stories I have ever read. I have liked most of Jude Deveraux's earlier books and thought this might be a good read. It was a good snooze. None of the stories caught my attention. I kept plugging away, hoping something would catch my attention, but no. I couldn't get interested in any of the characters, the plots were lifeless, and any romance seemed pretty much nonexistent.
Maybe I read this on a bad day, but I doubt it. I think it was just a collection of stories from authors who wrote them on bad days. No zing, no pop, no life.

3 out of 5 stars Jill Barnett outshines them all..........2004-03-16

This is a five story anthology by various authors all taking place in the Scottish Highlands. Some stories are much better than others. I will note a separate rating of each below, but the average of all five ended up being 3 stars, hence my overall score of the book.

In the first story, "Unfinished Business", by Jude Deveraux, Tyler Stevens agrees to fill in at work for her niece Krissy when she takes ill. Temporarily stepping into Krissy's secretarial position leads Tyler to travel to Scotland with Krissy's boss, Joel Kingsley. While in Scotland, Tyler and Joel unwittingly stumble into a ghostly murder mystery that piques their curiosity. Investigating together may lead them to find more than the answer to an old mystery. This story was pretty good, but not what I would consider excellent. It was a worthwhile read and deserves a rating of three stars.

The second story, "Fall From Grace", by Jill Barnett was the hands down winner of this lot. This was my very first Jill Barnett read, and since discovering her here, I've now read nearly all her work. The clans McNish and McNab have been at war for some time. Grace McNish and her band of merry misfits mistakenly ambush and capture the wrong man. Colin Campbell, Earl of Argyll, was on a diplomatic journey investigating the McNab/McNish clan war when Grace "captured" him. After catching a glimpse of the wild Scottish beauty, he decided to remain in her custody to be near her, and gather information for his investigation. This wonderful story is full of humor. From one clan member who is half deaf and misunderstands even simple instructions, to another who can't hit the side of a barn with the bow and arrow. I laughed out loud too many times to count. This story also contains the steamiest love scene of the entire book. After everything I've read by Ms. Barnett, this is still a favorite. Definitely a five star read.

"Cold Feet", penned by Geralyn Dawson, is the next entry. Texas cowboy, Rand Jenkins, gets lost in the snow-covered moors en route to a castle in the Highlands. Stopping off at a cottage for directions, he meets Annie Munro, a healer who is considered a witch by the locals. Rand ends up spending more time with the lovely Annie than he had planned. For some unknown reason, every cat in the surrounding area is attracted to Rand who subsequently develops an allergic reaction. Using her knowledge of herbs and potions, Annie attempts to ease his suffering. While Rand is fending off felines and trying to get rid of his itching, he begins to get an itch for Annie. This was my least favorite story. It just seemed too unrealistic and didn't hold my attention. I would give this one two stars.

"The Matchmaker" by Pam Binder is story number four. Kathleen MacKenzie owns a bakery in the Scottish town of Edinburgh. When American businessman Duncan MacGreggor leaves his wallet at her establishment, Kathleen sets out to return it. Catching up to him in the elevator of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, she hands him the wallet. Magically they are catapulted back in time to the sixteenth century where Mary, Queen of Scots still inhabited the castle. Now, together they must find their way back to their own time. I wasn't greatly impressed with this novella either. It seemed a little too far-fetched to be believable. I would rate it two stars as well.

Last, but not least, is "The Christmas Captive" by Patricia Cabot. Lady Mairi has fled her guardian's home to escape his rule, and his intent to marry her. Physician, Niall Donnegal, whose brother is the new Duke of Camden, finds Mairi who was injured during her flight. Not knowing she is related to his dreaded enemy, he takes her to his home to recuperate. Their relationship quickly grows. But they must deal with the curse she believes is real, and her guardian's wrath, in order to remain together. This story was quite enjoyable and an above average read. It earns a rating of four stars from me.

At the time I read this book, Jude Deveraux was the only author familiar to me. Her story here was better than the full-length novel I had already read. Overall, three of the stories were worth reading - Jude Deveraux, Jill Barnett, and Patricia Cabot. I would say three out of five would make this collection worth picking up. And with each entry being approximately 100 pages, no one story takes long to read.

              1 out of 5 stars boring.......2003-10-14

I expected a lot more out of this book, especially from Jude. I couldn't even get through half of the stories before I gave up on it and marked it off as a wasted $3. Don't bother with it, you will probably fall asleep before you can finish it.

              4 out of 5 stars wonderful anthology.......2002-01-19

I'll admit that as a big fan of Diana Gabaldon's OUTLANDER series I'm drawn to Scottish based romance. I bought the collection knowing nothing of anyone but Jude Deveraux, but if this is any example of their work I'll be hitting the search button after this review is finished. The book of 5 novellas was a wonderful escape from home and work.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS sneaks a ghost story into a sassy romance between 2 people who upon first glance couldn't be more wrong for each other.-- Tyler Stevens is convinced Joel Kingsley is completely wrong for her young cousin. Krissy is terribly infatuated with her older boss and despite Tyler's efforts to convince her otherwise, the girl thinks she's in love. Going to Scotland was Krissy's idea. If Tyler took her cousins place on the business trip she could keep an eye on Mr Kingsley for her while she recouperates from her terrible cold. What Tyler didn't count on was that "Old Mr. Kingsley" wouldn't be that old...in fact he was rather appealing. Having them thrown together to solve a centuries old mystery (complete with ghosts) only complicates an already tricky situation.

FALL FROM GRACE's humor really got to me. I felt so silly laughing out loud in the breakroom at work, but then that's what I needed the breakroom for....a break.---Grace McNish was fiercly protective of her clan after years of their being subjected to the McNab's theiving and raiding. When one of the McNab sons falls into her hands she and her rag-tag band of highland "merry-men" think they have it made. Ransom. One problem. He's not who they think he is.

COLD FEET who could resist a cowboy from Texas in the first place. This story had all of the things I love humor, romance and a bit of the supernatural.--Rand Jenkins is lost on the Scottish moors. He's supposed to be guiding his friends bride to the ancestral home, but as a Texan he's a fish out of water. Rand stumbles upon the cottage of a friendly local woman who takes them in out of the cold. She claims she's a witch and when strange things start happening to Rand he's convinced she has put a spell on him....and she has in more ways than one.

THE MATCHMAKER has modern business owner Kathleen MacKenzie fending off the efforts of the local matchmaker Harriet. She doesn't need a husband and even if she did she could find him all on her own. For example, the handsome American who stops by every morning for coffee and a scone. Harriet will not be thwarted. A little coaxing and (of course) a little magic will throw the hesitant couple into the past where they are not only fighting their feelings for each other they are fighting for their lives in the time of Mary, Queen of Scots.

THE CHRISTMAS CAPTIVE was read at the perfect time of the year...well Christmas of course. Mairi is on the run from her fiance. Niall is more than happy to keep her hidden after discovering the young runaway on his families lands cowering inside a hollowed out tree. She's full of secrets and a mysterious past that the logical physicain refuses to beleive. When her fiance comes looking for her, the Scottish lord has to deal with a murderous enemy when he admits that his soul mate will be staying right where she is... with him.

These 5 tales weave a pattern of magic, history and romance that really reel you in. I highly recommend them to anyone who needs to "get away". The shorter novellas let you finish one when you might not have the time to read a longer book. It's perfect for someone who really does need a vacation and a little romance but just doesn't have the time.

                    Book Description

A groundbreaking work that sees the contemporary cultural trends of tattooing, piercing, implanting, and branding as a quest for a transformative psychic experience.

                    • Features unforgettable color photographs by Steve Haworth, the foremost body modification artist in the United States.

                    • Introduces a subculture that has gone far beyond the realm of simple tattooing.

Acts of body modification are deeply rooted in physical impulses that are obscured in our technological society. As we become more removed from the physicality of our existence, we lose touch with an essential part of our humanity. Body modification is a way of reconnecting to our bodies, to the earth, and to the divine.

Pagan Fleshworks reveals that the prevalence of body modification--tattooing, piercings, brandings, and implants--is the postmodern way to heal the body and enliven the soul. These "fleshworks" are the result of people creating their own rituals and symbols of meaning in order to feel a sense of the divine within.

Maureen Mercury relates the various stages of obtaining fleshworks to the stages of alchemy, showing how fleshworks lead to psychic transformation--soul-making. Using mythological imagery and the stories of those who have chosen to modify their bodies, she identifies the signposts of our journey toward self-expression, exploring the connection between our desires and our outward life. More than 30 riveting color photographs by leading body modification artist Steve Haworth provide the perfect visual complement to this examination of the soul as it rises toward freedom.

                    1 out of 5 stars incoherent.......2007-06-05

I was intrigued to see that Soulban was also responsible for the story-arc of the Dawn of War computer game, which upset so many WH40K fans because it appeared to display almost no sense of the 40K universe. I was relieved, for instance, at the time, that BL didn't let Soulban do the novel for that game.
Whilst the Necromunda setting is far less detailed than the general 40K setting, Soulban still appears to know rather little about it. There are some very nice scenes, which are often cinematically inspired and presented, but the story arc is faltering and unstable, both in terms of its internal consistency and in terms of its relationship with the setting.
                    I'm unconvinced by this.

3 out of 5 stars Great Scenes But Questionable Whole.......2006-11-07

Though this is his first work for the Black Library and the Warhammer 40,000 universe, M. Soulban actually has quite a few game writing credits under his belt, as well as a few items of fiction for White Wolf. Technically, this book belongs to the Necromunda series, a sub-genre of 40K, but they share the same general background. This action-adventure tale follows the exploits of the Delaque ganger Uriah Storm, and has a wealth of secondary characters: "Voice," an ex-Escher ganger; Percal the Delaque handler; Morgane, Uriah's Van Saar love interest; and Slag, the Orlock uber-antagonist.

Though there's a small pretense to some self-discovery towards the end of the work, it generally rolls from action scene to action scene, with little else getting in the way, much - as noted in the previous review - like a James Bond film. This is both a strength and a weakness, depending on your tastes. If you want good action writing, it's quite plentiful, and each scene, taken individually, is well crafted.

However, if you're looking for compelling links between the action, then your search becomes more difficult. Every scene concludes in a hairbreadth thriller, and by the middle of the tale one begins to wonder at the "monotony" of narrow margins. Likewise, the protagonist Uriah Storm manages to go nearly a week without sleep, absorbing damage along the way that would down a bull. It makes suspension of disbelief difficult as the fatigue and injuries accumulate. Some of the supporting characters, though they show promise, fall a little flat as well. Voice, one of Storm's allies, mainly serves as an expository tool, and the villain Slag has enormous early potential that isn't realized in the end.

In summary: a collection of well-written scenes whose "big picture" is rather out of focus. 40K fans will enjoy themselves so long as they don't examine the writer's craft too closely.

5 out of 5 stars Mission Impossible - Necromunda Style.......2006-09-01

I just finished reading Lucien Soulban's fun Necromunda novel. It is a much denser novel than it appears at first glance. Every one of the characters propels the hack/slash moments in the story. The battle scenes are well described and the story itself is very interesting. If there was one part of the book that was difficult to grasp, it was the heavy descriptions of the various levels of Hive Primus, as I am not a player of the Necromunda game and this is my first foray into that universe. Of course, this IS the fifth book of a (seven, so far) series, I just discovered, but I think Fleshworks was written in such a way that made it easy to grasp upon the various elements of the world without confusion and I enjoyed reading about the various factions, which I think were described very successsfully (Escher v. Orlock, etc.).

I particularly enjoyed reading about the character's relationships and interactions (Uriah and Voice, specifically and oddy enough, although I liked all of Uriah's interations). It had a James Bond/Mission Impossible feel to it which I very much enjoyed.

Now, the BIG QUESTION: ARE YOU WRITING THE SEQUEL YET??? That is another book I will purchase and read IMMEDIATELY!!!

Thank you for an awesome novel, Mr. Soulban. I hope you return to this universe soon! I want to know more about the trials and tribulations of Uriah "Jester" Storm and all the characters you created for your part of this world!

This set of books is wonderful. My children adore them. Ella Lindvall does an amazing job of taking Bible stories and applying it in such a way that children grasp its meaning, and in a way that they can apply it in their life. That is such a hard task with young children. It is also written in a way that makes Jesus seem personal to them - as he should. I can't say enough great things about these books - you won't be disappointed!

I just totally love these Read Aloud Bible Story Books from Ella Lindvall. My 19 mo. old daughter loves them too...she has TONS of books and usually goes out of her way to "read" one of these books or bring one of them to me to be read. The stories are excellent and capture the meaning in such a simple and beautiful way. However, Vol. 3 is my personal VERY favorite...the creation story, Noah's story and Daniel all come to life in this book and they have touched my heart. Thank you Ella Lindvall for great books that direct little minds to God.

Toddlers through Kindergarten age children pay attention to the stories because the art is simple and colorful. The text is not difficult for children to understand and keeps their attention as you turn each page. Since the pages are large and the artwork fills them, the book is ideal to read to group of children gathered around you.
