Book Description
The Copeland family of Listre, North Carolina, goes back a long way. Each family member has a story to tell, and stories to be told about one another. Albert Copeland, the head of the family, writes it all down in the notebooks he started once to track the progress of the floatplanes he built, though they never did fly. Everything about the Copelands is in these books. And every one of them has his say. Funny and poignant, a family album of talk and tales, The Floatplane Notebooks shares the best-kept secrets of love, loss, and learning to let go.

Literature at its best!.......2006-10-26
The Floatplane Notebooks is one of those rare novels that truly mananges to captivate the reader. The novel, told from different viewpoints of a Southern family, has much to teach us about life, love, and loss.
My All-Time Favorite.......2003-09-06
This is absolutely my favorite book, I truly wish it was my family he was writing about.
Edgerton is by far the best Southern author writing today.
Southern Lit at its Best.......2002-06-04
"The Floatplane Notebooks" tells the story of the Copelands, a typical Southern family that gathers every year to clean up the family cemetery. Using the narrative structure of Faulkner's "As I Lay Dying" (a series of single-narrator chapters), the family experiences a devastating event that threatens to unravel the family fabric. In the end, all is well, and powerfully bittersweet.
The story has what is easily one if the funniest scenes I've ever read (regarding a well and a flashlight), and the way the story is resolved at the end is truly touching (the careful reader will see that the two scenes are closely related). Another notable feature is the observations of one of the book's main characters - a wisteria vine. This may seem strange, unless the reader realizes that the vine is essentially the theme of the story, for it represents death (a ubiquitous theme in all great Southern literature). The Copeland family could easily solve the problem of cleaning the family graveyard by just killing the wisteria vine. But, if they do, they then have no real reason to gather every year. This is a family that is united by and finds strength in death.
This is a truly unique and great story, though not appropriate for younger readers. Skilled readers will find much to appreciate. "The Floatplane Notebooks" is Southern Lit at its very best. READ THIS BOOK.
Pretty Gosh Darn Awful!.......1999-08-27
Nothing happens in this awkwardly constructed little book. The characters just talk (for a page or two)...and talk and talk. If you like this sort of thing (plotless yammering) you should hang out at the local diner and listen to the folks carry on.
A future classic.......1999-06-09
I believe this book to be truly underappreciated. Most people tend to think it is just a story about some quirky southern folk. It is that but it is also much more. It is "Our Town" reborn. It should definitely be studied in our classrooms instead of all the novels that are so hard to grasp and seem irrelevent. This one has a meaning to each and everyone of us, no matter how young, old, rich or poor. It is life.

Love this series but a little let down with this one..........2005-10-11
Daisy is book #5 in the Seven Brides series. I love this series but I have to say that Daisy is my least favorite so far. It wasn't bad but it just didn't measure up to the others. Neither Daisy nor Tyler has very much self-confidence. Both think they are unattractive & think that nobody will ever love them & then when they find that they love one another they still hold back for quite a while. Although this book was a little dull I highly recommend this series.
Good, even if you're not reading the series.......2005-05-05
I picked this up because it was priced low and sounded relatively decent. It was actually a very good read. The characters are well-rounded, and the plot is interesting, if rather cliched. I have only one criticism, and that is that the book felt a bit over-long. At 392 pages, it could well have been reduced by at least 100 without injuring the story. Some emotional conflicts the characters face seem repetitive, and the book suffers for it. I recommend the book, but I would really rather give it a 3.5 than a 4 rating.
Two stubborn people fall in love, fighting it all the way........2001-08-22
Although I found the ending somewhat rushed and the character of Zac Randolph more interesting than the laconic Tyler, the undeniable chemistry between Tyler and Daisy mixed with the land rights intrigue makes for an unputdownable good read. The character of Daisy is especially fun to watch and grow. One thing I really liked about her is just how closely she resembled her father in her stubborn behaviour and how author Leigh Greenwood managed not to beat the reader over the head with it, he (yes, Leigh is a MAN) lets you figure it out for yourself through the character's behavior. I am glad that this is part of a series, because these are characters I would love to spend some more time with. Highly recommended.
Heartwarming.......1999-12-31
This was my favorite of the series. I have fallen in love with the whole bunch. The characters are so interesting and fun. This series is addicting. One will never be enough so buy them all and lock yourself away for for a grand old time.
Series favorite.......1999-03-05
By the age of seven Tyler Randolph has been so emotionally abused by his sadistic father he no longer allows himself to feel anything, not when his brother go to war, his father deserts them or when his mother dies. He doesn't think he deserves his place in the family or his share of the family wealth.
Determined to make it on his own, Tyler heads for New Mexico and the lost gold mines. The only problem is that his birthday is in six months and he has promised to take one of the jobs his brothers had to offer if he fails to find gold by this time. Tyler can't bear to be a further failure and plans to dissappear when the time comes. When he rescues an injured beauty he has no place to take her but to his prospector's cabin high in the mountains. Taunted as the ugly Randolph, Tyler is hiding his handsome face behind long hair and a heavy beard. Daisy can't help but feel he has something to hide. Somehow though Tyler can't seem to want to hide from Daisy. Not his face and not his heart.
Daisy has been told what to do all her life and Tyler is the first man who seems to think she's capable of taking care of her ranch herself, she loves him, but doesn't want to give up the independence he's taught her to cherish. Finally she realizes that, though Tyler can do everything better than she, he has a scared little boy inside of him that needs her as desperately as she needs him. When she realizes Tyler sees himself as her partner, not her master, she knows she can trust him with her heart.

Space Opera at its finest.......2007-01-26
David Weber is a shining star in the sci-fi heavens these days. I was never much a fan of the "military" sci fi before I started reading Weber and he turned me on to it.
Colin was an astronaut on 21st Century Earth. He was on a flight to the dark side of the moon - and out of contact with his superiors - when he was approached by a strange ship, which was unaffected by his weapons and which thereupon kidnapped him and drug him into the moon itself. To his surprise, he learns that the moon is actually a vast spaceship called Dahak, run by a central computer (Comp Cent) also calling itself Dahak and build by the Fourth Imperium, an ancient civilation and the basis for the human race. The Imperium came to Terra over 50,000 years ago on Dahak and were marooned there by a mutiny. Dahak has been waiting all this time for the right human to come along and become his new captain, for the ancient race of the Achuultani - which has almost competely destroyed the ancient Imperium, with its vastly higher technolocaical base, at least 3 times - is approaching earth and will arrive in the next 2 - 3 years. To make matters worse, the few remaining mutineers are divided into two factions: one which is still holding to its mutinous ways under the guidance of the unstable Anu, and another which regrets its involvement in the mutiny, led by Horus. Colin must first defeat the mutineers, who have hoarded all the weaponry and technology, as well as outnumbering the reformeds members of the crew by a large amount. Once that impossible task is done, then comes preparation to stop the Achuulanti . . .but that is the next book. . .
I'm reading this in the omnibus "Empire from the Ashes," so am able to read this story as a single tale rather than 3 individual books, but I feel it is easier to present reviews for each book individually. If yo are a fan of military sci fi, space opera, science fiction, or just a rousing adventure, this is the book for you!
perfect.......2007-01-04
I couldn't ask for a better si-fi of this type. Make sure to read the 2nd and 3rd parts of this series.
Great reading and great stress relief........2006-07-11
Being involved in law enforcement and having been in the military it is a pleasure to be able to escape with someone who knows what they are writing about, humans performing at their best under stress. The ideas in this series are fun but the individual characters and their loyalties are even better. Thanks.
my favorite book.......2006-02-12
I love this book. Of my 5,000+ SciFi books, it is my favorite. True, it is a little bit raw. But, it tells a SOLID story and leaves you wanting more more more at the end. That is the sign of a great book. A sentient ship the size of the moon and the unique story of the "space aliens" makes for a totally cool story. BTW, I am reading it for the 5th or 6th time (who keeps count ?). Weber owes a couple of authors for his story: Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistriss and the Perry Rhodan series. There are two sequels to this book, also 5 stars. I am valiantly waiting for the fourth ...
Preposterous but Fun.......2005-10-11
The story opens in the midst of a mutiny. Things are not going well for the imperial loyalists so the captain of the Imperial ship of the line "Dahak" takes drastic action ensuring that even if he dies, the mutineers will not succeed. The problem is that the mutineers are led by the chief engineer who has some technical savvy of his own. The destruct sequence is begun and all of the rats abandon ship and head for shelter on the nearest planet. That would be earth. The mutineers' plans to reclaim the ship, however, are thwarted and the mutineers are stranded.
All of this took place over 50,000 years ago. Since then, the mutineers have subtly controlled the progress of the earth by means of such events as the Hundred Years War, the World Wars, Pol Pot and other such unsavory characters (they are BAD). A desperate group sucked into the mutiny fights a rearguard action for all these millennia. Meanwhile, the ship of the line, devoid of any crew, carries out repairs and hides itself as the moon. All of this is just prolog for the real story.
The ship Dahak cannot fulfill its final commands without a crew. It manages to kidnap an earthman, train him as captain and swear him in as an Imperial officer. It is then up to him to resolve the mutiny and, not incidentally, prepare for invading aliens. To do this, our gallant hero is going to have to wipe out political terrorists and quash corrupt politicians. The result is a wild but fun romp filled with action and intrigue.
This is a book where it is hard to "suspend the disbelief" but managing to do so is worthwhile for its entertainment value. This is a quick and frivolous read but it is fun.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best Bounty books.......2006-07-18
This is by far one of the best books about the infamous mutiny on the Bounty. Glynn Christian is a descendant of Fletcher Christian, the leader of the mutiny. His researches into the family history is fascinating (if a bit overwhelming at times), but it's the new information about the voyage of the Bounty, the behavior and character of Captain Bligh, the nature of Tahitian society, and the mutineers on Pitcairn Island that makes this book a treasure trove for fans of the Bounty story. While it does not replace any of the previous works on the subject, I can say that if you have read those but not "Fragile Paradise," you are missing out on a very important piece of this amazing story.
A great read.......2004-05-21
As someone who has a great interest in the history of this strange adventure, I ordered the trilogy book on The Bounty and loved it . Afterwards, I ordered this one and I'm really glad I did. As informative and well written as the original book was , this one seemed to fill in some important insights and details about the personalities and the everyday life of the sailers plus a lot of the Tahitian customs . It started out pretty dry and dull to be honest but once it got going, I couldn't put it down. This guy has done his homework and then some ...it truly is an impressive book. Totally recomended !!
Excellent and unique work of unusual family history.......2002-10-03
This review concerns the new (revised) Doubleday edition of the book, published in 1999.
Here is a book that is quite unique in my experience. I don't think I have ever read a book that has offered so much initial frustration, which has ended up turning out quite so well. In the first couple of chapters I was sure I was not going to be able to finish it. I put this down largely to poor editing, but I think there may be the added factor that this edition involved a major revision of an earlier work and that the two were not married very happily together. Yet the book soon strikes out on a new path, and on another level, as we leave the Manx and Cumbrian origins of Fletcher Christian behind, and begin to learn some of the details of that murky event known to history as the "Mutiny on the Bounty." One thing is obvious and it is to the author's credit, as he is a direct descendent of Fletcher Christian (and, something which will appear obvious given the nature of life on Pitcairn at the time of the first settlement, of several of the other mutineers): he makes a very bold attempt not to hoist Bligh on too high a yardarm, in spite of the man's obvious and well-established shortcomings. Indeed, he allows Bligh to hang himself in the book, which is something he seems to have tried very hard to accomplish in real life.
The book's last section of three concerns the personal odyssey by author Glynn Christian back to Pitcairn in search of traces of Fletcher and a greater understanding of some of the legend which grew up around him and his fellow conspirators of over 200 years ago. It is well done, and if we are a bit frustrated by the results, it's not because the author didn't try hard enough. In fact, this is a very successful project from every point of view, even if I did think at first that it was going to be "another island book," like the one on St-Kilda I read many years ago and still haven't digested to this day. Anyone interested in the Bounty story must read this and all those interested in the history of the Pacific, or even just plain family history, will probably enjoy this very much. After initially wanting to almost burn it, I now find myself giving it my highest recommendation. It's quite unique. By the by, it's interesting to reflect on the book's title. Ordinarily, one would think it referred to Pitcairn, the ancestral home as it were; but I rather fancy it refers to Tahiti instead, that fabled place from which some of Glynn Christian's other ancestors sprang.
New edition coming.......2000-05-08
A new edition, by the same author, is due out in 2000. New research gives a clearer picture of the tension aboard BOUNTY after sailing from Tahiti, there is more evidence about Bligh's method of captaincy and, for the first time, a full chapter on the Tahitian women, who they were, how they thought and how, even though overlooked for two centuries, they are crucial to the survival of Christian's remote settlement on Pitcairn Island.
AN EXCELLENT BIOGRAPHY OF A NOTORIOUS MUTINEER........1998-11-15
I found FRAGILE PARADISE to be one of the best biographies I have ever read. The amount of research GLYNN CHIRSTIAN gathered about his famous descendent was just mind blowing. I often wonderd about FLETCHER CHIRSTIAN'S life before his days on the bounty. Having seen all of the movies based on the mutiny I never really felt that hollywood told his story with any accuracy at all. We never really get to know who CHIRSTIAN was and why he did what he did and the price he had to pay for his actions. Also I discoverd while I was reading this book the information about his family in ENGLAND and thier roots which hollywood often chooses to forget about when telling the story about the bounty muntiny. All in all if you like the story of the mutiny on the bounty you'll love this book.

Book Description
As parents our greatest calling is the raising of our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Yet for many Christian parents, the promise of God's blessing to His people and their children is not well understood. Douglas Wilson's Standing on the Promises brings clarity, providing parents with an insightful handbook on biblical childrearing. It's not another paint-by-numbers method for parenting; it's about about grace and covenantal blessings. Pray for your children, stand on God's promises, and experience the joy God intended for your family.
Customer Reviews:
Best parenting book after 12 years of parenting.......2005-04-23
If I have read one book on parenting I have read 30 and this is the creme de la creme. I have read the majority of Doug Wilson's books and once again he tells you things you already know deep down inside as being truth, but he expands on them in such a profound way that really helps you see the role that God has placed on us as parents. Douglas Wilson helps to show why it is so important to follow the direction of Gods teaching. We have to answer for the lack of parenting, in todays times it may seem archaic to parent this way and it is tough if you do not start out this way but I see a difference in my own children and I know when they are an adult they will have a biblical out look on the world instead of conforming to it.
Parenting with hope.......2003-08-25
This book is a wonderful treatise on the scriptural foundation for hope in parenting and the heavy call that God puts on us as parents to fulfill His promises in our family. It does not turn a blind eye to the choices our children may make as they grow older. But our culture has turned so far away from the providence of God that we mistakenly believe that hope is only in the individual choices each of us make and in those our children make. This book is a corrective to that notion, centering us back on the hope that God has placed the solitary in families. We are not alone. Our children are not alone. And so they have a gift of spiritual growth that they would not have if they were raised in heathen homes.
I recommend this book to all parents looking for guidance as to the foundation of hope upon which they parent their children. I believe that in our culture of blind humanistic optimism and individualistic Christian pessimism, this is an important topic. http://www.jeffreyclong.com
Excellent Book!.......2002-08-09
This is an excellent book, I highly recommend it to any one with children!
The best Biblical book on child rearing I have ever read!.......2000-05-18
I could not stop reading this wonderful book, it is ballanced, and Biblical. I love the positive approach and the emphasis on loving children, and creating a pleasant atmosphere in the home.
I have recommended this book to everyone I know who has children, and I highly recommend it to Amozon.com readers
The Greatest Book Written on Raising Children.......1998-09-18
As a pastor, and a father of four, I have always hoped for 1 book, definitive and courageous, to give out to families in desperate need of guidance for their family. I needed a book to cover the hard facts, without compromise... This is that one book. Every pastor should own this book, for the good of his family, and the good of his flock. In the Christian home, teenage rebellion, although common, is not normal. It is not acceptable. It does not have to be this way.
