The Best of Wilde.......2007-06-27
I'm very pleased with the book. All of Wilde's wit is right there at my fingertips. It's a handsome book, too. Thank you.
If you love Wilde, you MUST own this book!.......2006-11-27
Though the print is small for those of us over 40, it's worth it - if not, it would weigh about 10 pounds! As it is, it's a tome, but worth reading, and re-reading time and again. It has everything - everything! - that you'll ever hear mentioned - his stories, his novels, his essay's.
It would make a great gift for a young writer, as well.
This compilation complete, well printed, top 10 library purchase!.......2006-07-28
This particular compilation is not only complete, but is a well printed, well packaged addition to the books you would want in your top 10!
All Wilde.......2006-07-09
I had purchased this complete works of Oscar Wilde since I'd seen several of the recent releases of the theatrical versions of his plays and wanted to know more. As far as one volume complete works go, this has the usual weight (but not to heavy), small print (but not microscopic), and thin paper. It does have intros by Wilde's son and grandson which are interesting. Not having read much of Wilde it's been great being able to read not only his famous works (The Importance of Being Ernest, the Canterville Ghost) but also his lesser known ones (Lady Windemere's Fan). His plays are witty and often make interesting observations on human interactions, but they start seeming redundant after you've read more than three (every one seems to include a debonair, worldly cynic who offers his insights on the world--the characters played by Rupert Everett if he performs Wilde). I've yet to finish all the works but I look forward to attempting to do so.
I would recommend this book to new Wilde fans, literature majors, etc. For those just looking to read one or two of his works this would not be the way to start.
fantastic.......2005-12-25
Oscar Wilde is one of the best writers that ever lived and this book is a must have!

Not a romance reader, but loved this.......2004-09-08
Coming from a home, whose male occupants know all the James Bond movies by heart, I enjoyed a laugh riot with this novel. There was so many tongue in cheek comedy through this entire book I could hardly put it down.
Jane (female James) Spyrus (come on, who are you fooling) is lighthearted, goofy, unaware, and intelligent. The many men in her life are sexy, dangerous, and intriging. With Knockout Lipstick, laser shooting braclets, truth serium perfume, tracking tampons (no I am not making this up--Sands is), and Vibrator mini launchers, nothing will stop her from stopping the bad guys and saving the world.
God, I'm laughing just thinking about it!
Hmmm..........2004-07-30
I dont really know how else to describe how I felt about this book. The story line was not very strong and the characters were okay... nothing special. If anything, Sands tries too hard to make a mediocre plot into a James Bond like story, BUT... this is the funniest book I have read in a long time. I laughed until I just about bust a gut! The situations that the characters get into are incredibly funny. The inventions are beyond belief! If you want a good story, read something else, but if you want to laugh yourself silly, this book is for you!
Laugh out loud funny!.......2004-04-07
I just discovered this author and all I can say is I intead to buy all her books from now on!! This book was so good during some parts I was laughing so hard my husband had to tell me to hush!!! This book is one the best book I have ever read and I have read quite a few.
Funny and Entertaining.......2004-03-20
I really liked "Loving Daylights" even though its not the type of romance I usually read (humor). I must say however, Ms. Sands' writing is the bomb. She manages to make the heroine: Jane Spyrus and her boyfriend Able to be quite endearing.
Here's the scoop: Jane is a gadget techie working for super-secret spy organization called: "BLISS," when her best friend Edie is captured Jane and Edie's brother Abel go after the missing girl with funny (and humorous) results.
I enjoyed the Loving Daylights. Mostly because I think Lynsay Sands has a gift for good characters, interesting situations, and well written dialogue. I also like the male characters. She doesn't write your typical "Alpha boor" males which (as the name implies)bore me to tears. Instead her men are well-balanced, thoughtful and most of all normal. I also enjoyed Jane's "Inventions" especially the missile launcher and the amazing shrinking condom. LOL. And lets not forget her sidekick "Tinkle" the dog. Too funny.
Sands' writing was fun, fast-paced, and had impressive Dialogue. I hope for a sequel with Dirk- or maybe even a serious romance/spy story. Ms. Sands certainly has the talent for it. 5 Stars for a fun, amusing read.
Mostly boring.......2004-03-06
This is the 4th Linsay Sands book I have read. On the basis of the first two: Single White Vampire and Love Bites, which I absolutely loved and which grabbed my attention from page one, those books put Ms.Sands at the top of my Favorite Authors list. However, after reading this and Always, I hope Ms. Sands sticks with the vampire comedy genre. I am so looking forward to more of the Family Argeneau series. I had looked forward to Loving Daylights but was very disappointed. It was just a little too light of a romp. It had no substance, too little romance, much too much descriptions of ... everything, especially the Goodinov house -- to the point of boredom. Frankly, I didn't find it all that funny either. It was amusing in parts and just plain silly in others. My body couldn't decide whether it should fall asleep or scream! It was definitely a book I could put down and take a breather from. I did like the truth serum though. Unfortunately these good scenes didn't come up until the last half of the book.

FROM THE USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF STAR TREK ®: A TIME TO HEAL, THE START OF A NEW EPIC IN THE ERA OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES
Returning from its historic first voyage to the edge of the galaxy, the damaged U.S.S. Enterprise journeys through the Taurus Reach, a vast and little-known region of space in which a new starbase has been unexpectedly established. Puzzled by the Federation's interest in an area so far from its borders and so near the xenophobic Tholian Assembly, Captain James T. Kirk orders the Enterprise to put in for repairs at the new space station: Starbase 47, also known as Vanguard.
As Kirk ponders the mystery of the enormous base, he begins to suspect that there is much more to Vanguard than meets the eye. It's a suspicion shared by the Tholians, the Orions, and the Klingon Empire, each of whom believes that there are less than benign motives behind the Federation's sudden and unexplained desire to explore and colonize the Taurus Reach.
But when a calamity deep within the Reach threatens to compromise Starfleet's continued presence in the region, Kirk, Spock, and several key specialists from the Enterprise must assist Vanguard's crew in investigating the cause of the disaster and containing the damage. In the process, they learn the true purpose behind the creation of Vanguard, and what the outcome of its mission may mean for life throughout that part of the galaxy.
Inside: Bonus diagrams of Vanguard station!

Some Advanced Reading for Star Trek Fans.......2007-03-01
I've been reading ST novels for over twenty-five years and Harbinger is a good read. It's no easy chore to steer away from characters you know so well from TOS and create new ones that will live on in ST: Vanguard but Mack did a pretty good job. My only "critique" would be that Mack consistently tries to sneak up on you and elevate your vocabulary by throwing in words and phrases (including some French references) that would have many people reaching for a dictionary. When I read a ST novel, I want to enjoy the adventure, not find myself asking, "What did he just say?" Still, it's a great book and I definitely recommend it.
Harbinger, and sequel Summon the Thunder are AWESOME.......2006-10-22
Mack creates a new cast of characters cut from the same, TOS cloth that the original Enterprise crew is. This is what Star Trek needs; new faces and new themes. Surrounding these new dynamic characters is a space station, Starbase 47 "Vanguard" whose presence at the mysterious expanse of space, called Taurus Reach, has stirred up the Klingons, Tholians, and even Romulans like bat to a hornet's nest.
Teatering on the brink of war, these three empires (four when the Rom's enter the scene in SUMMON) all seem know there is a mysterious, planet consuming energy there, and they each want a piece of the action. Read this before you get to SUMMON.
One more small insight... The sequel, SUMMNON THE THUNDER is excellent as well. It is to HARBINGER what EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is to A NEW HOPE. Unfortunately, the third part of the series (REAP THE WHIRLWIND I think is the title) doesn't come out until May, 2007 (when the series I feel will culminate). If you are an impatient Trek geek like I am, wait till March to start this series...then you wont make the same mistake I did and burn thru these two books in a week only to realise I wont have closure for 8 months or so....
New kind of Star Trek...........2006-08-09
Pure joy to read... this is a new kind of Star Trek fiction, and is just what fans needed. This book was fun to read, interesting, and realistic in regards to people. It's less like a Trek novel and more like a really good story that uses the Trek univers as a setting. instead of focusing on Kirk and Co., we get some new charecters that have strong points and flaws, some tradgedy, some inner conflicts and a LOT of intrigue. I can't wait to read the next one. If you've been getting bored with the 'same ole' then this book is for you!
A mighty well-written start........2006-07-22
Shame on me for not listening to Marco Palmieri (World's Greatest Editor) at Shore Leave '05, when he encouraged me to read HARBINGER, stating it was the beginning of a great series. WGE's further encouragement included providing me with a copy of the book, which - after having it autographed by author David Mack, I immediately set aside with a promise to Marco that I would read it.
I tried once this winter to get through it, but found it didn't hold my attention and stopped after the first chapter, feeling vaguely as though I had let Marco down.
Then came this year's Shore Leave, and something changed. Okay, it's possible the appearance of the second novel in this series, (SUMMON THE THUNDER) written by the sensational and oft irreverent team of Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore, had something to do with it, but maybe not. In any case, I bought the second novel - getting it autographed, *of course!* - and began again in earnest to read HARBINGER.
Much to my surpise, my brain came through, everything clicked, and I found myself zooming right along to the end. Turns out, this story contained everything I love about the Star Trek novels I choose to read: new ideas, new people, a mysterious alien element, a FABulous starbase, a bit of infidelity, some (gasp!) same-sex kisses, and, just on the rim, good old Jim.
And a bonus: I don't have to wait a year for the next book! Well, hooray for me!
You know, those of us who read the novels have different ideas about what we want to get out of them, and that's the beauty of the novels in the first place - that we *can* do that. To those of you who are complaining about the lack of Enterprise crewmembers in this story, please remember, they can't ALL be about James Kirk & Company. After all, outer space is a big place, and Kirk was required to live and work in that big place. The Enterprise didn't do it by itself, and shouldn't have been expected to.
To me, the intoduction of new faces and places, as well as the telling (however brief) of how Kirk got to be the great captain he was, only adds to depth and complexity of the universe Gene Roddenberry created.
HARBINGER is a good, solid story, a fine start to the Vanguard series. And now I'm already halfway through SUMMON THE THUNDER.
Star Trek Vanquished !!!.......2006-05-31
After a long line of dreary Star Trek books attemptting to cash in on the name of this once great series, here is another one that utterly fails to capture the ethos of the show and quite frankly is an insult to the legacy of Gene Roddenberry. The actual involvement of the USS Enterprise in this story is minimal and almost pointless, they could have plugged in any starship crew for the part. The bulk of this story involves a bunch of the most mindbogglingly disfunctional morons ever to grace the pages of a Star Trek novel. Peopled with individuals having affairs; an undercover Klingon spy disguised as a human (*gee, that's original !!!); a drunkard space trader (*gee, that's original !!!); a Vulcan with emotional problems (*gee, that's original !!!); a lesbian relationship (*Oh how wonderfully PC); and a CO who's trying to cover up his relationship with a fellow officer but is facing a trial and ... can we stand the strain ... his mum dies !!! Yes, this novel has all the literary class of a daytime American soap opera, but of course unfortunately that is what Star Trek has turned into in recent years so why am I not surprised ?!!! What really 'ruffles my tribble' so to speak, is that this is actually the antithesis of what Gene Roddenberry created. He saw a future where humanity had evolved beyond the past pettiness of human nature to rise above our weaknesses in the bold adventure to explore the galaxy. Too many modern fans have forgotten this, which is partly why the Star Trek franchise has been in decline for so long. Star Trek reached beyond its' simple origins, that was part of its' appeal, and though some fans buy into this American soap opera concept they really need to wake up and realise the U S of A isn't the whole world. Gene Roddenberry's vision was to "explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilisations ... to boldly go where no man has gone before!", definitely not to plumb the depths of the lowest and worst elements of human nature, which is what this novel does. And to make some of these characters Starfleet officers is an insult to everything Gene Roddenberry stood for. At nearly 375 pages, about 100 could be said to contain worthwhile adventure and storytelling elements, but as far as I am concerned the rest is the most diabolical drivel which I wouldn't even use for toilet paper - it's no where near absorbent enough !!!

Excellent for learning how to 'be' your true self with others.........2007-03-31
I agree with the reviewer below - ignore the San Jose reviewer. The title describes exactly what it delivers.. Helping people show their 'real' selves. I'm a Clinical Psychologist, and I recommend this to clients who struggle with social anxiety/social phobia.. but also to any clients who are struggling with low self esteem, or social insecurity at any level.. I think it's an excellent book, written simply and clearly, with straightforward suggestions to effect change, and challenge yourself to be your true self with others..
Who am I?.......2004-06-10
First of all, I must warn you not to pay attention to the reviewer from San Jose... they are either brain dead or have not read the book (I'm sure it's the latter), because this book has already changed my life perspective with reading only the first few chapters. I have never said that about a book and I have hundreds in my library.
I have been a fearful person for most of my life... fearful of what others might think of me, so I put on a facade each day and try to be someone who I am not... I'm 34 years old and living a constant facade has left me with very few meaningful relationships and constant bouts of depression.
I bought this book a while back, but I never started reading it until June 8th 2004. I have been in a state of depression now for about 3 months and I have been praying and asking God to change me and to allow me to learn how to love other people instead of avoiding and being afraid of them and what they might think of me.
God has answered my prayers with this book. I have read only a few chapters and it feels like the shell inside me that I have been building for years has been cracked and the real me is beginning to emerge. What a liberating feeling. My depression and my focus on myself is diminishing at an unbelievable rate.
I have always had suspicions of others thoughts about me. I create a fantasy life of imagining what they might be thinking about me, so to avoid rejection, I keep my distance and act cool and aloof in there presence. Meanwhile I go on in my lonliness with my insides unknowingly crying out to communicate to others. In reality, my imagination of what they think about me probably doesn't even come close to what they really think.
I started reading this book only a day ago, and I can already see a monumental difference in the way I am communicating with others around me... fearless and loving are two words that I can describe my feelings toward others now... and in only one day... unbelievable! Seeing as I have always been fearful and bitter toward most other people.
This may be the most "perspective changing" or possibly "life changing" book I have ever read, that remains to be seen, but I am already ordering other books from John Powell.
If you have been lonely, depressed, afraid to speak in front of others or voice your opionion for fear of being rejected... wait no longer......
BUY THIS BOOK NOW! YOUR LIFE IS WAITING FOR YOU!
The ancient Greeks philosophy has been condensed into two words... "KNOW THYSELF". This book will help you find the real you.

when [possibly] good books have *really* awful titles..........2003-08-01
Sorry -- I'm evaluating some communication books for a large organization -- and I just couldn't get past the title. How could any business person recommend this to a large group of peers...with a straight face...or expect them to take it seriously? Possibly the first rule of good communication, especially when presenting one's written advice and expertise to complete strangers...is to craft a title that actually says something.
Excellent guidelines for communication.......2000-02-08
In this book are guidelines for communication in deep personal relationship. It is written in a spirit of acceptance and treasuring the other as well as of oneself. As well as other books of this author this book too helped me a lot by personal growth. I found in them a lot of answers or confirmations of my feelings or thoughts, I felt I am not alone,... I often leaned on these ideas when feeling anguish because of rejection or misunderstandings, ...when I was hurt or afraid...it helped me to see forward and I am very thankful for that
