Great Book!.......2007-09-10
I could hardly put this book down. I found it interesting and compelling. I've read Anne Frank and Sala's Gift, and thought why not to this novel. It's a great twist to what if Peter had lived. How would he deal with the memories of Anne Frank? What his life would have been like if he had lived? Great book. I highly recommend it.
Left out the things that I thought would have made this book worth reading,.......2007-02-01
such as what did Peter experience in the camps, more insight to his struggles before and after liberation. The overall story was a good idea and it was a 1 night read for me, but I found it somewhat frustrating because so much was missing. When Peter finially admits who he is , the book just fades out, leaving you feeling "that was it!" However , it was nice to imagine he did survive and left me thinking this really could have happened, he could have really survived and if he did what would he do.
Survivor guilt.......2006-10-06
This book turned out to be much better than I expected. I have read a lot of books and articles about people who survived the Holocaust, but this gave me a new appreciation for what it must have been like to have survived when you had lost everyone that you cared about. It was very touching.
Not the Peter from the annex.......2006-06-24
I loved the premise of this book, even though I knew Peter had died in the camps. It was very brave of Ellen Feldman to take someone who was practically iconic and base a novel on him, knowing him to have perished. However, having done that, she did not make much of a reference to the relationship between Peter and Anne in the book, especially given the title of the book. Mostly it was about his madness, his fears, his paranoia based on his experiences in the camps. And I did not believe that his wife would have gone on unquestionably as she did with a man who was so hidden from everyone, including himself. That Peter could not face who he really was was an interesting idea. That he could not face what he had been through was also realistic. But his family life did not ring true for me. And his "memories" of Anne were virtually non-existent in the book. Overall, I believe the concept is fascinating, but its development did not play out for me.
what might have been.......2006-06-06
when i first read the book i knew at the outset that pieter had died in mauthasen a few days before the camp's liberation.even with that knowledge it was so interesting to see what his life might have been like if he had survived.i have had an interest in the holocaust since early childhood,and what i have come to for a conclusion is this:the saddest things were the loved ones that were left behind as survivors,and the loss of what all those six million people could have become.so for them let's always remember what we all have lost because of the horror of the holocaust.

Very well written story.......2007-08-29
This story has a nice plot weaved into it. I enjoyed its mystery and ghost storylike charms. This was my first Medeiros book and I willl probably read others as I enjoyed this and finished it in 3 1/2 hrs by the pool.
Not Very Enjoyable.......2007-05-17
I have been reading as many of Medeiros books as I can find. Some have been really good, and with humor to the story, others have been kind of odd.
This one was kind of on the dull side. Too much time was spent going over and over the first wife and how upset she was. Then more about the fact that she died. The daughter was just plain weird.
Not impressed with this book.

Teresa Medeiros is one of my favorite authors. As many books as I read, there may be a handful of authors that I actually remember. She is one of them. One Night of Scandal is about an adventuress debutante, Carlotta Fairleigh, and it did not disappoint me--passionate scenes that sizzle, with main characters that feel like real people, Ms. Medeiros makes you feel as if you are a fly on the wall, watching the story unfold before your eyes. Definitely one of those books you want to put in the shopping basket.
Captivating historical filled with humor and passion.......2005-09-02
As a child Carlotta Fairleigh had earned the title "The Hertfordshire Hellion" for her madcap adventures. Now grown up, some things haven't changed. On the very night of her come out ball, Lottie discovers that the infamous Hayden St. Clair is residing in the house next door, but only for that night. Already wearing her ball gown and with guests due to arrive at any moment, Lottie is determined to get a glimpse of him. After all, what better inspiration could there be for an ardent reader and would-be author of gothic novels than to look upon the man whose wife had mysteriously died just months after he had killed one of his best friends in a duel defending her honor. Going out on a limb (literally), Lottie sneaks into his backyard and soon finds herself in the arms of the man known far and wide as the "Murderous Marquess."
Hayden St. Clair, Marquess of Oakleigh, is a man accustomed to being alone. For four and a half years he's been the subject of rumors and gossip and, on his last night in London, the last thing Hayden wants is company, even if it comes in a beautiful package. At first he assumes Lottie is a courtesan sent by his friend Ned, and is even tempted to sample the goods. By the time the truth comes out, however, the alarm has been raised for the missing Lottie, and the pair must face even more scandal or marriage. Desperate to keep her beloved guardian from facing the marquess in a duel, Lottie convinces Hayden that marriage is their only option. The newly married but not at all blissful couple head off to Oakwylde, his estate in Cornwall, for a head-on collision with the ghosts of Hayden's past and his willful ten-year old daughter.
ONE NIGHT OF SCANDAL is everything a reader wants a historical romance to be. It's poignant and tender with sparks of passion and humor. First introduced in A KISS TO REMEMBER, Lottie is all grown up and fulfills the promise she showed as a child. Her joie de vivre is exactly what Hayden needs to bring him out of the darkness his guilt and sorrow have sunk him in. One can empathize with Lottie in her determination to reach out to her stepdaughter Allegra, and to end the years of sadness that have shrouded Oakwylde. Given the wealth of characters in this blossoming series, readers can only hope that Teresa Medeiros will return over and over to this fascinating family and their friends. Be warned! Starting this book will most likely cause you to have a sleepless night, as it is almost impossible to put down.

Not A Kiss to Remember. . but still good.......2005-06-24
I was so incredibly excited to get my hands on One Night of Scandal after having read A Kiss to Remember--which is, by the way, one of my favorite romance novels of all time. The novel (which, like one reviewer has already stated, is more of a companion than a sequel to the first) started out brilliantly. Lottie's fall from grace and the disastrous results that ensue, as well as the reintroduction of familiar, loveable characters seemed too delicious to be true, but I must say, once she is borne off to the "end of creation" (Cornwall), the story's pacing seriously slows. Allegra and the whole ghost-story-dead-wife-gone-insane intrigue is tolerable, but there isn't any excuse for the lack of romance and character development between Hayden and Lottie. I mean, if you really think about it, the novel was mostly from Lottie's point of view, and even when you've reached the end of the story, you still feel as if Hayden is a perfect stranger. You don't quite sympathize with him like you did for Sterling in AKtR; you don't indentify with his mysteriousness and brooding; the sporatic conversations between him and Lottie are strangely empty and out of place, and the passionate groping somehow sprung up out of nowhere. In AKtR, there was no way in avoiding the sex that occured between two characters who were perfectly obsessed with each other, whereas, the sex in ONoS could almost have been deemed unnecessary. However, I found many positive things in this novel, such as the sweet mother-daughter relationship between Lottie and Allegra, even if it did take away a little (okay, alot) of the romance, as well as other heartfelt, humorous moments. I also thought it had a powerful ending that struck a chord, so I suppose you could say it was the beginning and ending that mostly made this book for me. I finished it with a smile on my face. Though the steaminess doesn't come even close to the first book, and the story lags in places when it easily couldn't have, I recommend this to any fan of Teresa Medeiros (God bless this woman), especially if you enjoyed reading AKtR.
BTW, did anyone else catch the historical inaccuracy in which Beethoven is made out to already have died? The story takes place in 1825; Beethoven didn't die until 1827. ^_^

this is, by far, my favorite collection of poetry from bukowski. it is worth the price alone for one of the poems (i forget the name of it right now) but one thing's for sure......... this will inspire you to write. in general bukowski style, it's crude, crass and beautiful.

It's hard to think of a person less likely to
achieve posthumous fame than Charles Bukowski.
His poems don't scan or rhyme, they're imposs-
ible to memorize and the stories that they
tell repeat themselves like a whisky drinker
around 1:30 in the morning. In fact, you could
write a decent-sized essay on why nobody
should ever remember Bukowsky.
And yet. . .
There have been two movies based on his life
and work. His name hasn't exactly become an
adjective: 'Bukowskian' doesn't scan any
better than his poems, but he is certainly a
reference point in the literary imagination of
our time. If someone says "he's a Charles
Bukowski kind of guy" you get an image, bright
and clear like it came from cable TV.
So why? Why hasn't this guy been consigned to
the trash heap of misanthropic/misogynistic,
narcissistic drunks with no sense of rhythm?
Well, for staters, look at the title of this
review. There are enough people who see them-
selves as 'the mutilated who still need love'
to forgive any poet who came up with a line
like that.
Then there's this, from a poem about people
who call him asking for advice about a
literary career:
...they think I have held back my
secret.
I don't write out of
knowledge.
when the phone rings
I too would like to hear words
that might ease
some of this.
that's why my number's
listed.
Now that last poem, called 462-0614
is the one with the bookmark in my copy
of Love is a Dog. Little stuff like that,
small marks of compassion and vulnerability
that you have to dig for, that's a big
part of why we're still reading him today.
In a more general, story-telling sense he is,
like Billy Collins, the master of the double-
back and bite-you-on-the-butt technique of
spinning a very short tale and that's a very
addictive quality in a poet.
Of course, another reason that we're
reading Bukowsky today is that John
Martin out of Santa Rosa, CA sold his
collection of first editions and founded
Black Sparrow Press to publish guys like
this.
So, if you keep a few volumes of poetry
beside the bed, here's one to keep whenever
you need to be reminded that mutilation
leaves scars and that under the scars, the
mutilated need love too.

Raw and accessible.......2006-07-08
There is no craft here, they say. The poetry flows from Bukowski's hand with such ease that it's akin to that thing they said about Kerouac: "it's just typing." And it's half true, both in Kerouac and Bukowski there's a beautiful measure of rawness and learnedness. Erudition? Bah! We want nothing to do with it, after Hank dispells the greats, and works through them like he does preteen mexican girls. Every poem is accessible, like a Pinsky or Collins, but it goes further because it pushes us to consider ourselves, more than a stroll through Central Park and a statue, but ourselves dirty and drunk with blood on our hands, f***ing that same statue.

This is my favorite book of poetry by Bukowski. It is an absolute masterpiece filled with excellent poem after excellent poem. Horses, Beer, and Women.

Timmy openly admits to rewriting milennia of Christian truth in order to accomodate a sinful disaster within his own life - marriage to a divorced woman!

To justify himself he pries open clear Bible teaching to make room for homosexuality. Of course he only reveals his own wacky apostate ideas!

Must reading for all who contend for the faith.......2007-07-03
Having recently read Luke Timothy Johnson's book Living Jesus: Learning the Heart of the Gospel, I was drawn to this earlier work out of curiosity to see how someone with such spiritual insight would enter into scholarly debate. I was not disappointed. Johnson does not "preach to the choir." While there are certain points I think I might disagree with Johnson on, his intellectual honesty causes the reader to stop and consider what he is saying. For example, being from a Protestant tradition, I was taken aback at Johnson's suggestion that Martin Luther played a role in the current confused state of biblical criticism (Chapter 3) by his opposition to Catholicism's emphasis on tradition. My initial reaction was that this was just another Catholic argument against anything Protestant, but such was not the case. Johnson later praises Luther in the Epilogue when he recognizes Luther's original intention in the principle of "sola scripture." He states, "Luther recognized that without a dialectical relationship to the texts, in which they were given their own authority in the church, tradition could swallow them up and manipulate them, to its own ends."
As I read Luke Timothy Johnson's writings, it becomes obvious to me that this is not a man who is out to make a name for himself. He is not catering to any group (be they Catholic, Protestant, fundamentalist, or liberal) that will give him his fifteen minutes of fame. This is an honest scholar with a firm belief in the living Savior described in the pages of canonical Scripture rather than in the dead politically correct one purportedly discovered by those in search of the historical Jesus.

"The Real Jesus" attempts to guide the reader through recent controverseries related to the search for a more "historic" rather than Biblical Jesus. The author's argument shows the limits of trying to "explain" Jesus and/or Christianity using strictly logical and material strategies. It is a challenging read, but ultimately rewarding.
