Book Description
An autobiographical erotic novel written by a contemporary woman who is an observant Muslim, The Almond is an extraordinary and pioneering literary work, a truly unforgettable journey into the sexual undercurrents of a world that is, outwardly and to Western eyes, puritanical. Badra is a young Muslim widow who flees the small town of Imchouk to take refuge with her Uncle Slimane's iconoclastic ex-wife. In Imchouk, it was expected that Badra's life should be limited by her husband's wishes, but at Aunt Selma's, Badra begins to think about how she wants to live from now on. She recalls her youthful curiosity about sex-what other girls' and women's bodies were like, her first attempts to spy on men, her fascination with the two beautiful prostitute sisters who lived outside Imchouk. When she develops a passionate, consuming relationship with a wealthy doctor, Badra remembers and rediscovers her own sexual being, in scenes that are erotic, revelatory, and sometimes bittersweet. C. Jane Hunter's translation gives us a book of great power that resembles a Muslim Vagina Monologues. The Almond is an inspiring and illuminating novel that reminds us of the transformative power of desire and pleasure.

Sex is the same all over the world.......2007-03-30
West or East, Christian or Muslim, repressed or not, sex is something we all have in common. It would be best if we all were just more open about sex. This book is a breakthrough, because it is a Muslim woman opening up about her sex life. It's sexy and interesting. I like books like this and Abby Lee's Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind. Anytime I can read about what really goes on in a woman's head (sex-wise) it's fun and exciting.
Fascinating and sad.......2007-01-05
It is hard to evaluate this book if you have not been exposed to muslim culture before. I was raised in a mostly muslim country who represses girls and favors boys with the effect of raising weak men who think that power and virility comes from putting down women, be they sisters, wives or daughters. I left the country for college because I did not want to live my life like that and did not want to find myself in a marriage like the main character of this book. Belive it or not, these things do happen to this day among muslim families that live in very civilized countries in Western Europe. Someone had commented that the main character is a sick puppy before she went to the big city given her childhood experiences. I got news for you. In a repressed culture those things really do happen. Older men pray on little girls and or teenage boys pray on teenage girls and it all is kept quiet because if the girl speaks, it must have been her fault, the woman is the temptress and she is ostracized. It is sad but true.
I saw myself and my friends in many of these stories and it was hard for me to read. I initially picked up this book as an easy erotica read but it is so much deeper and so much sadder. I am glad I did because it is a very well written book. It is about time that topics like these come out in the open for people to know and discuss. And yes, maybe the book would not have had the success it has if it were not written by a muslim woman. Precisely becasue it is written by one that the story is so much deeper and true because it is not work of just fiction but it is a collection of experiences shared by many women on that side of the world.
Bitter Almond.......2006-07-14
THE ALMOND has become a phenomenal bestseller in Europe, in France alone it has sold over 50,000 copies. One German critic has hailed the author who uses the pseudonym (for all the obvious reasons) of "Nedjma" as a 'literary guerrilla fighter.' Such was the mania for this book which claims to be a semi-autobiographical account of a young Moroccan woman who leaves behind a loveless arranged marriage for her Aunt Selma's house in Tangiers, where she meets a Europeanized doctor and becomes his lover.
I agree with a previous reviewer, Shapour, when he states that this book would have never received a line of notice if it hadn't been written by an Arab Muslim woman. Despite the critical hoopla from Europe's literary nitwits, this book is simply a catalogue of every kinky sexual activity one could think up. The story alternates, chapter to chapter, from the childhood and youth of her village to her experiences with the sexually psychotic Driss. But, long before Driss ever laid eyes on her, Badra was a sick little pup herself. Her memories of sexual experiences with friends and cousins, dirty old men and her morbid fascination for the village prostitutes are simply --excuse my American queasiness about mixing little kids and sex--disgusting. Regardless of the highly charged subject matter, "Nedjma" has the writing style that reminds one of a shopping list. A dry narrative of the far-fetched sexual encounters of dull people. The sexual awakening of a Muslim woman? Good for her! The rest of us though are falling asleep from her monotonous ramblings about sex and love and more sex. Some, I'm sure, are also throwing up after having read about Driss' grandmother and her young servant girl having sex while he watched. Nedjma/Badra (or whatever your name is) you need to go back to bed. And that means back to sleep, so try keeping your hands to yourself - and off yourself.
This book has received little attention here in the United States. If you haven't read this piece of psycho-porn yet, count yourself lucky and spend your time with something better worth your time. THE ALMOND is a bomb (I still love the book's cover however).
Under The Veil.......2006-06-28
I wish you could find more books like this focusing on the sexuality of Muslimas.
I once was involved with a Pakistani girl who had to see me on the sneak. Her family stressed virginity and tried to keep her (someone who was 19!) as close to home as possible when she wasn't at school or work. Well, this girl was so sexually repressed she became warped and nasty! she wanted to have phone sex, cyber sex, gave me risque pix of herself. our physical relationship was devoid of any romance. Those hypocritical values of her parents did that to her (By the way, she eventually married a Bengali, got divorced, and the last I heard is living with an american man 15 years older than her).
One Word Describes This Book: Pornography.......2006-06-28
No.. makes that two words, 'Bad Pornography'.
Face it kids, this book is hyped soley because it was 'allegedly' written by a socalled Muslim woman. If this book was written by some American or European or Jewess than nobody would give it a second notice. If they did it would be to rightfully criticise it for being nothing more than the spiteful, rebellious ranting of a bitter apostate who has doomed herself for what? for the love of carrots between the legs? For the right to not only live haram but to proclaim it and write of it in all of its sick tawdry details?

Book Description
Sugar Beth Carey's come back to Parrish, Mississippi, and she's brought her reputation for wreaking havoc with her. She's broke, desperate, and too proud to show it, even with her old enemies lining up for a chance to get even. Her former girlfriends have their eyebrow pencils sharpened into lethal points. Winnie Davis, her longtime rival, is fully armed with the money, power, and prestige that had once been Sugar Beth's. But worst of all is Colin Byrne, the man whose career Sugar Beth had destroyed -- and not exactly accidentally.
Now Colin's a famous novelist living in Sugar Beth's old mansion, and this modern day dark prince is using his writer's imagination to figure out how to bring the town's beautiful former princess to her knees. But despite her sassy mouth, feisty spirit, and hardheaded ways, Sugar Beth's no longer the spoiled rich girl they all remember. No, now she's a woman to be reckoned with ... and a great big reckonin' is about to happen, not least of all for one dark prince who might -- just might -- be thinking about falling in love with the wickedest girl in town.
Ain't She Sweet? A funny, heartwarming, oh-so-spicy story of love, friendship, and the possibility of happily-ever-after.

"
Spoiled, rich princess Sugar Beth Carey comes home to Parrish, Mississippi 15 years after breaking hearts, ruining friendships, and destroying reputations. Now she's broke, desperate, and too proud to show it -- and the people of Parrish don't believe in forgive and forget. A fabulously funny and heartwarming new novel from the bestselling author.
Ain't She Sweet?
Not exactly . . .
The girl everybody loves to hate has returned to the town she'd sworn to leave behind forever. As the rich, spoiled princess of Parrish, Mississippi, Sugar Beth Carey had broken hearts, ruined friendships, and destroyed reputations. But fifteen years have passed, and life has taught Sugar Beth its toughest lessons. Now she's come home -- broke, desperate, and too proud to show it.
The people of Parrish don't believe in forgive and forget. When the Seawillows, Sugar Beth's former girlfriends, get the chance to turn the tables on her, they don't hesitate. And Winnie Davis, Sugar Beth's most bitter enemy, intends to humiliate her in the worst possible way.
Then there's Colin Byrne. . . . Fifteen years earlier, Sugar Beth had tried to ruin his career. Now he's rich, powerful, and the owner of her old home. Even worse, this modern-day dark prince is planning exactly the sort of revenge best designed to bring a beautiful princess to her knees.
But none of them have reckoned on the unexpected strength of a woman who's learned survival the hard way.
While Sugar Beth's battered heart struggles to overcome old mistakes, Colin must choose between payback and love. Does the baddest girl in town deserve a second chance, or are some things beyond forgiving?
Ain't She Sweet? is a story of courage and redemption. . . of friendship and laughter. . . of love and the possibility of happily-ever-after.

Customer Reviews:
A fun and funny book!.......2007-10-08
What a hoot! I really liked this book. This is the first book I have read by this author. Very entertaining and a great ending.
Sweet knockout from SEP.......2007-09-26
Thrice married Sugar Beth Carey was once the town golden girl of Parrish, Mississippi, but all her past misdeeds and recriminations have caught up with her as she returns to her hometown for the first time in 15 years. Disinherited by the father whose love she always sought but never achieved, she returns to collect an inheritance from her aunt. Instead of the family estate, she is relegated to the carriage house, an abandoned depot, and a valuable work of art that she must find first.
Just about everyone in town is looking forward to her return to even old scores. No one is happier to see her squirm than her former teacher, Colin. Fifteen years earlier, Sugar Beth accused Colin of making a pass at her in order to deflect blame for an embarrassing incident she instigated against her arch nemesis, Winnie Davis. Colin, now a successful writer, resides in her former estate. With no one willing to give her a job, she's stuck working as Colin's maid (which makes for some of the most humorous passages in the novel, particularly when she calls him a prissy Brit and questions his sexuality), and in a turn of events, it is Winne that is the belle of the town. While Colin entertains revenge fantasies as payback, she disappoints him by rising above it all and swallowing her pride, thereby taking the joy from him. Colin finds himself smitten with this new Sugar Beth, and her former home town realizing that she actually may have grown up and deserves to be forgiven for her past sins.
SEP cannot be beaten in creating endearing, flawed, and charismatic characters. Her realistic dialogue and gift for plotting make her a standout among her peers. I never expected to like this book as much as I did, which makes it all the more refreshing. I found it to be captivating and kept me glued to the final page.
Perfect.......2007-09-12
Susan Elisabeth Philips is one of my favorite writer. I read all her books and this one is like others the sense of humor ise very much and beside very romantic. I am glad to say its perfect
Bite me! We love her........2007-08-08
You'll find out very quickly that Sugar Beth Carey ain't so sweet. She was a lying, snobbish bitch who made life hell for the not-so-beautiful, not-so-rich nerdy girls at school. She toyed with them, made fun of them, and destroyed them. And they haven't forgotten! So the nails get sharpened when the adult Sugar Beth returns to Parrish, Mississippi, absolutely broke, to look for a hidden, valuable painting on her aunt's death. Sugar Beth's old lover hasn't forgotten her, along with his emotionally brittle wife Winnie, Sugar Beth's former nemesis. Nor has her English teacher Colin Byrne, whose career Sugar Beth destroyed in a fit of pique. Everyone has a vested interest in turning the tables on Sugar Beth! But a lot of water has gone under the bridge and Sugar Beth has a whole new set of urgent priorities in her life, most of which she's keeping top secret. As you would in such a hostile environment! Colin, in particular, enacts the most hideous revenge, but passion, hate and love tend to run very close together. He isn't immune - sexually and emotionally - when he begins to discover the new, vulnerable, lovable Sugar Beth hiding inside the tough, smart-mouthed, bite-me exterior. SEP works a miracle in this book, turning a most unlovable heroine into someone admirable, even as you cringe at her former `crimes'. A complex, addictive, steamy and honest book, with a brilliant cast of secondary characters. A real slice of emotional life.
Loved this book!!.......2007-06-04
I read this in one sitting, while the kids and husband were out of the house. It was so cute, funny, sweet, romantic, and I loved the heroine! It's a great book!

Customer Reviews:
PROVIDES GREAT INFORMATION.......2007-05-29
I ordered this book for my father, whose brother died in WW11. The family was given almost no information at the time, but by piecing together details, my mother determined that he was almost certainly on a particular boat when it was sunk by the enemy. That fact was confirmed by this book, and it offered a lot of information that is offered only sketchily in other areas. We appreciate the author and the information he was able to provide families, as well as the story of the wonderful chaplains.
Interfaith in action.......2006-09-22
Everyone who's already reviewed this book has said so much about it that it's hard to find anything more to say about how well it's written, what a great gripping true story it is, and the amazing heroism of the four chaplains. This book is so well-written and has such a compelling and involving story that I read it in like two days, and wished there had been even more. Additionally, this heroic tale from WWII has special meaning to many of the people in my area (New York State's Capital District) because Rev. Clark Poling's church was in nearby Schenectady, providing a local connection.
The book itself follows a somewhat nonlinear format, going back and forth between the pre-war lives of the four chaplains and their lives during the war, particularly after they boarded the Dorchester and arrived in Greenland for a very brief stay before going back on the ill-fated ship. After this point, the narrative switches entirely to a linear format, discussing the ship's final night before being torpedoed by a German U-boat and the chaos, heroism, and tragedy that ensued. Not many people could honestly say that they would give up their lifejackets if their ship went down in freezing waters in the middle of the night (Rabbi Alex Goode even gave up his gloves) or remain calm in the midst of such frantic circumstances and such a life-and-death situation. Many people back then also weren't so forward-thinking about interfaith relations, with a Reform rabbi, a Catholic priest, and two reverends from different Protestant denominations being such close friends and reaching out equally to everyone on the ship, largely being nonsectarian apart from when they did things like conduct services. This was still an era in which many Protestants and Catholics didn't associate with one another, to say nothing of the rampant institutionalised prejudice against Jews, and, in a number of areas, against Catholics as well. They set a moving and heroic example for all time, not just in the area of interfaith relations, but also in the area of selfless sacrifice. It was interesting to read in the Afterword about some of the people who have since been awarded the Immortal Chaplains Prize for Humanity Award, such as the Japanese Righteous Gentile Chiune Sugihara, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Omri Abdel-Halim al-Jadah, a Palestinian Muslim who died while saving a young Israeli Jewish boy from drowning. The Afterword also provided information on what happened to the survivors of the Dorchester sinking and the near and dear ones of the chaplains.
As we find out all throughout the book, this tragedy could have been prevented (it was kind of like a smaller-scale Titanic) if only the Dorchester had been inspected more closely or refurbished, or if there had been enough lifejackets and safety instructions provided, and even after disaster struck, the casualties could have been reduced if the nearby American ships had begun searching for survivors and bringing them onto their ships right away instead of thinking nothing serious had happened or going after the attacking U-boat first, but even in the midst of such bungling and such a chaotic disaster, the amazing heroism of the chaplains shone through as well as it would have in calmer circumstances.
A remarkable true story.......2006-09-12
With a sickening thump, an explosion wracked the troop transport S.S. Dorchester - a German torpedo had found its mark. It was shortly after midnight, February 3, 1942, and the ship was about to sink into the deadly cold waters off of Greenland. As men panicked and struggled to find a way to save their own lives, four men walked amongst them spreading calm and encouragement. Helping everyone they could find, even giving away their own precious lifejackets, the four chaplains - Rev. George Lansing Fox (Methodist), Rabbi Alex Goode, Rev. Clark Poling (Dutch Reformed) and Fr. John Washington (Catholic) - sought to serve their God and the fellow men. And when the end came, survivors saw the four chaplains, locked arm in arm, praying on the upside-down hull of the ship, just before it dove beneath the waves.
This book tells the remarkable true story of four men who joined the American military as chaplains, their experiences at their Massachusetts training camp, and their final tragic mission. It is a story that is bound to bring a tear to your eye, but it is also a great story of faith and truly living the life of godly sacrifice. Overall, I think that this is a great book, on that I highly recommend to everyone.
What A Great Read!!.......2006-09-07
If you ever feel that your fellow man has no regard for you, pick up this book and don't put it down untill you have finished it. What an inspiring story of four 'Men of God' and their dedication to that God, each other, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed their paths. You will be stunned by the character of each of these great men.
Great on So Many Levels.......2005-09-27
I became intrigued by this story when I was no moare than 10. I was a stamp collector and came into the possession of the stam honoring the four. In those very pre-internet days and in a very small town with few resources I was only able to learn a small amount of the story. Since then there were pieces here and there but it was not until this book that the whole story was made available to me.
I was almost uable to put this book down once I started. It's well written. It's abook that you can read for factual historical content or faith and inspiration. The story of the four chaplains is one of the many little known inspiring and interestng stories of World War Two. Don't pass this book over thinking it is just another relilgous book. It is much more.
In this day and age when we hand out superlatives like they were penny candy, the story of the Chaplains and the sinking of the Dorchester is an almost must read not just for people of faith, but all people.

Book Description
Glory of the Seas was the last clipper built by legendary shipbuilder Donald McKay. This is a delightful look at ships in the Cape Horn trade in the 19th century and at the life of a master of a crack clipper ship in the last days of the Age of Sail.
Customer Reviews:
A wonderful story of a talented sea Captain........1999-10-30
The research by Michael Jay Mjelde made this book possible. The Captain, Daniel McLaughlin, managed to make 42 trips around the Horn without serious incident. The Captain is my great-grandfather on my mother's side and came from the island of Gran Manan in the bay of Fundy. I would love to hear from others who have read the book.
Book Description
In her first books, Behaving as if the God in ALl Life Mattered, Machaelle Small Wright wrote:
"If we allowed all the knowledge from our soul level to fully flow and be totally accessible to our concious self . . . before we disciplined ourselves on how to respond to such as flow on the physcial level, we would shatter. Blindly expressing limitless through limitation would be more pressure than our body could bear."
In Behaving, Machaelle scratched the surface on a whole new reality. Now, in Dancing, she opens the door and invites us in.
Out to discredit the "ozzie and Harriet" School of Spirituality, Machaelle gives us extensive groundwork, supported by an actual account of her own expansion experience. She tells of her introduction to the White Brotherhood--that evolved group of souls who assist humans in their evolutionary development--in a story told through journal entries for those early years of her nature work. Reading Dancing, you feel like a bird on Machaelle's shoulder . . . watching the expansion unfold.
Customer Reviews:
It will change your life.......2007-02-09
This book changed my life when I read it a few years ago. I am now re-reading it and getting more layers of meaning and comprehension. As all of Machaelle Small Wright books, it brings a much wider perspective of the universe we live in and what is possible in life. It's absolutely inspiring. On top of all of this, Machaelle writes in an easy style, using a direct and honest tone. The book flows fast, though you might want to re-read some parts just to grasp the incredible amount of information given. It's hard to put down.
Extremely good book 100% worth its price........2005-09-12
It is a book about life, death, other levels of existance, reality, nature intelligencies... I have practiced her other books for having a better quality of life, and they all work great. I have read Dancing 3 times in these past 4 years. I recomend the expansive experience you'll get on reading Dancing...
Nature 101 on "How to Make Your Life Better".......2005-02-19
This is the first book I read by the author. It's a real stretch for many but a pure delight to read. Her MAP White Brotherhood book and Flower Essences book are treasures in healing body, mind and spirit. Follow her into the Perelandra garden and discover that our lives are gardens. Whether it be a house, car, business, project and on ad infinitum, it qualifies as a garden as far as nature is concerned. And the ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS thing about it is that we can work with nature to make any area better! Folks! There's a whole world out there waiting for you to tap into it and all you have to be able to do is want to. The deck is stacked in your favor! The Universe wants you to succeed! IT WILL HELP YOUR DO IT RIGHT! This is truly an investment in yourself! And it's so easy.
Can you tell I'm a fan? I've used the MAP healing with the flower essences and the gardening techniques in my garden and in my home. I have started the Microbial work. Wherever you start, the results will be better balance for you.
It opened me right up!.......2004-08-27
I first read Machaelle Small Wright's book while on retreat in a secluded pine forest in Colorado. It was as though the universe (or whoever) conspired to get me into that still small space to absorb the information coming my way.
Machaelle (if I may be informal) uses a writing style that is unpretentious and blatantly autobiographical. What I grew to like about the book is that it does not try to use pseudo science or overblown new age sentiment to make its case. Machaelle makes her case by simply writing about her experience.
She describes her experience of being called into relationship by Nature (capital N) and the energies that govern and hold form and matter in her garden in Perelandra. She then goes on to describe Nature's invitation to her to bilocate--be fully engaged in another dimension while being fully engaged in this one.
I have to say that this book really opened me up to the possibilities of parallel realities and the risks one takes in making this journey. Not only are there emotional, psychological and psychic risks to take, but there are physical ones as well. The physical body must adjust to its transformation as it is infused with a different quality of energy than we're used to. She addresses this as well.
The last half of the book details her experience of going back and forth between dimensions using a journal/diary format, a format I've never really enjoyed. This is why I've given the book four stars rather than five.
All in all, I would urge anyone who wants an honest companion for the journey to explore this book. I'm enjoying some of her other works right now--I'm glad I made the initial connection with this book.
Genius or Lunatic?.......2002-07-06
This is an amazing book - the best way I've been able to describe it to my friends who spend less time thinking about this stuff than I do is to say, "she's either really onto something, or needs to be seriously medicated" ;-)
Of interest to anyone who has ever considered that there might be intelligence in nature or a larger organizing principle to the universe beyond tax codes, this book is a personal spirtual journey that involves both the nature spirits and Dwight D. Eisenhower in the afterlife (Yeah, that one).
Unlikely, realistic, grounded and visionary this is a book for avid gardeners who want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes, those like myself prefer to do their gardening in other domains than dirt and anyone who loves a story that's both funny and challenging at the deepest levels.

Roddy is blamed, and his life and that of his father are in danger.
Roddys grandfather, a decorated Chicago homicide detective who has retired to Phoenix, chooses to hide him at a friends trading post near the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona.
Here Roddy becomes involved in the lives of three cultures: the white trading post owners, and the Navajo and the Hopi Indians. In the end Roddy must choose between following the law or helping his new friends survive.
