A lavishly illustrated demonstration of what you can do with a digital camera, Start with a Digital Camera mimics a traditional photography text. It teaches how to choose a subject, arrange lighting, compose frames, work with models, and capture fast action. The author, a graphic designer, also discusses various styles of photography (landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and so on) available for exploration. But rather than discuss film, chemical development, and darkroom techniques, Odam digs into the special quirks and capabilities of digital photography. He explains--with the help of many beautiful color illustrations--how to manipulate electronic photographs on a personal computer.

Rather than focus on the mechanics of image editing, the book explains digital manipulation terms and techniques in a mostly generic way. For example, he provides a page full of variants of the same image, each under- or overexposed to a different degree. He treats color correction and other techniques similarly. However, he acknowledges the power and popularity of Adobe Photoshop by explaining specifically how to achieve certain effects--such as those created with filters--in that program. The examples of clipping and combining photographs involve Photoshop too. The result of his work: a superior guide for anyone wanting to get into photography via the digital route. --David Wall

2 out of 5 stars Something missing.......2002-03-11

The book is missing something rather important..."Now that I've captured an image, how do I get the color to match what I see, what's on my monitor and on my printer?"

The section on page 100, Color Accuracy, is incorrect. The author needs to develop an understanding of image color management. An image can be printed out of any number of applications and the color will be the same. The print driver menus can cause the color to change...not the application. Also, a properly color managed image will look similar in RGB and CMYK, not as shown in this book.

This is a good book for hobbyists who are not concerned with accurate color, which is fine as long as the book buyer understands this. Those who are concerned with color calibration and management should spend their money elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book before you buy your camera.......2001-06-15

I was shopping for a digital camera to use for studio still-life photography. It's a confusing world full of technospeak and options. I bought this book and it was clear as day what I needed to buy and my camera ended up costing me a lot less than I would have guessed. I realized I didn't need most of the features on the higher-end cameras. This book also clarified "flash" on digitals and lighting requirements which had previously been mysterious to me. It's easier than you think.

Since getting my camera this month, I have used the camera to create large high-resolution images for 3 projects: a tradeshow booth, an ad slick, and a product spec sheet. I wouldn't have attempted these projects without reading this book.

This book also helps one see how Photoshop and digital cameras go hand in hand to create profession images. Opened my eyes.

4 out of 5 stars a stimulating showcase of what can be done with a digicam.......2000-06-30

Printed in full color, this about 140 page-long book suggest a lot of ideas what pictures can be taken with a digital camera. It has a small section on the principles of digital photography and necessary computer equipment, a couple of chapters on photography in general (lighting, background, etc.), and finally gives many examples of what can be done with the pictures by editing them in Adobe Photoshop. After all, the major fun of digital photography is that you can edit an image before printing it! The only problem is that you need to have Photoshop (along with a vector drawing program) and should know how to use them to take full advantage of this book's advice. My overall impression is that although one can find a more detailed and serious books on digital photography and image processing, this one may be a good gift to a person who just got his/her digital camera and needs to read somewhere how to start with it.

I work with digital cameras and young students. This is the only book I've found which meets both of our needs. It covers technical information, yet provides visual examples that beginning students can understand. I love it!

I love this book! It is full of inspiration, information and lots of wonderful photos. Very clear, concise instructions are included, as well as lots of great patterns. I especially loved Polly's color palette in her folky rugs and seeing the rugs and coordinated quilts on display in her home. For those looking for Americana themed rugs and quilts, this is a great book, as it contains several projects based on red, white & blue designs.

This is a wonderfully composed book with clear instructions, beautiful pictures, and interesting background. Inspiration comes from not only the projects, but from the wonderful ways the rugs and quilts are displayed in Polly's home. This is not only a must have for any quilter and hooker, but is also a tempting book for those who would like to learn either art.

Filled with beautiful photos of Polly's home and her hooked rugs, along with her sister's wonderful coordinating quilts, this is a MUST HAVE book for all rug hooker's new and "old." Americana "eye-candy!" It is refreshingly uncomplicated and includes patterns to both quilt and hook. Every crafter needs this book on their bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars Looking for inspiration??.......2003-07-01

Folk Art Friends is both an inspirational and a practical how-to-book, combining two art forms...hand-hooking rugs and quilting to produce your own folk art. I am a rug hooker of just 2 years; I have never quilted, but have wanted to hand quilt a piece. This book is urging me to "go girl". Beautiful color photos, clear directions, patterns galore, resources for materials...everything a quilter and/or rug hooker would need in one book...and you can produce coordinating works! These two authors, sisters, are experts who are willing to share their ideas and techniques with others...in the true spirit of their arts. This book is a true "keeper".

                  Book Description

The only entertainer besides Elvis Presley to be enshrined in both the Country Music and Rock and Roll halls of fame, Johnny Cash touched the lives of millions around the world with his distinctive style, powerful presence, and classic songs that mirror the human condition. In I Still Miss Someone, more than thirty people who knew him best provide an insider's view of the heart and soul of the friend they knew simply as John. The tapestry they weave reveals both the public and private sides of a wonderfully adept and complex man.
Featuring contributions from a broad spectrum of persons from all eras of Cash's life—including siblings Tommy Cash and Joanne Cash Yates, early bandmate W. S. Holland, country music icons Merle Kilgore, Johnny Western, and "Cowboy" Jack Clement—I Still Miss Someone is a stirring tribute by those whose friendship with Johnny Cash was both deep and lasting.
Dozens of illuminating photos—many never published before—and a bevy of Johnny's handwritten notes, backstage passes, and other personal paraphernalia make this a one-of-a-kind tribute book that will appeal to everyone.
The roster of those sharing their recollections of Cash include his longtime personal agent Lou Robin; Larry Murray, who wrote for Cash's ABC television shows and his CBS Christmas specials; devoted musicians Bob Wootton, Jack Hale Jr., and Dave Roe, who spent many years on the road with Cash; designer/couture to the stars Manuel; plus secretaries, publicists, farm hands, and many others, each of whom adds vibrant color and texture to the life portrait of their departed friend.

5 out of 5 stars A BRIEF NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR/COMPILER.......2006-10-20

Greetings. May I congratulate you for finding your way to this book and to these few words.

This title, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, if from one of my favorite Cash-penned songs and the book was/is published by a very small mom/pop outfit in Nashville. They (the publisher) have no promotion or marketing or publicity savy, to speak of when promoting a book like this, so it has just layed here in obscurity.

This book, although it contains the input of over forty close Cash associates and a foreword by the Grahams (Ruth and Rev. Billy), has NEVER been reviewed by any press. In fact, the Nashville media didn't even give it one line. Small publishers suffer this snub, and in the end, so did this tribute book. Lost in the larger shuffle of all things Johnny Cash.

The only folks that know about this book are folks like you, that have searched, surfed and stumbled across it or maybe found it after hearing about it word-of-mouth.

To the point, if you get this book, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, and are not moved by it, touched by it, or feel it is more than worth the price, I will personally refund your purchase price. (hughwaddell@comcast.net)

Yes, I believe in this book with all my heart and soul!!!! In the few interviews about the book that happened last year (2005), I stated the same challenge, and have not been asked to refund one dime, yet. In spite of all the review snubs, the book stands on its own simple merit.

So screw the tiny publisher, the snubby-dub media and the self-serving Nashville "pompasses". This book does not need to be hyped or pumped by critics, anyway. I swear to you that you will enjoy this look at Johnny the Cash through the eyes and hearts of people who knew him best... his friends and family.

                  Thank you and God Bless!

5 out of 5 stars The Johnny Cash few of us ever had the privilege to know........2006-04-15

All of us who followed the music and life of Johnny Cash;knew from the beginning of his musical career in the laste 50's that there was something special about this man. He came to most of us by his music and shows but we always knew he was a man who first of all knew and loved his God. The name Pilgrim was often associated with him;but the name Disciple would be just as fitting. I have followed ,listened to and read about him for about 50 years, but I can honestly say that the real truth about what Johnny Cash was really like is not any better shown than in this book. How he was seen and loved by those who really knew him, loved him, worked with him, family members, and people who considered him a friend and at the same time he considered a friend. Over 40 people got the honor to say what Johnny meant to them and what kind of a man and friend he was. One thing that is obvious from reading this book of over 300 pages and over 40 people,is that there must be thousands of others that knew him as well and if they had the same opportunity would have similar things to say.
It is so obvious Johnny loved life ,how much his family meant to him,and how much he respected those around the music business. If anyone in the public arena ever gave the impression that as he journeyed throuh life;his friend and Savior Jesus Christ was always by his side;it had to be him.
Millions of us admired Cash;but what a privilege it must have been to have been close to him. No wonder a great personal loss is seen in the stories each participant has to tell.
As we continue to listen to his music;this book will remind us what a Legend "The Man in Black" really was.
I am sure that when he finally met his God,he probably said something like;"Thanks Lord, for the privilege to have served you and my fellow man.I did the best I could ,and it's good to be home with you"
After you read this book, why not sit down and think or write about what Johnny Cash meant to you.

5 out of 5 stars Everyday People write about the Everyday Man.......2005-12-01

OK, with all the hype about the movie, Walk the Line, and living in Nashville as I do...and hearing Johnny Cash's name everywhere you turn...I hesitated going to see the movie "just because". Well. I somehow ended up seeing it, (long story for another day.) And let me just say that much to my chagrin, I LOVED the movie. So now I've been on a Johnny Cash rampage, listening, watching, and reading everything I can get my hands on. Yes, I succumbed. Call me weak.

This title looked interesting to me because it's written by people who knew him on a day to day basis. There's a chapter written by the guy who kept his farm, for gosh sakes! You just feel the love seeping from the pages. I wept, I laughed, I've read it again, and again.

For readers who might be wondering what all the shoe size business is about here in the reviews (I know I wondered before receiving the book)...Hugh says in the book that Johnny always said he had "itchy feet". He always needed to be doing something and going somewhere different. Johnny said "Everyone has itchy feet, some just itch more than others." So at the beginning of everyone's chapter is that person's shoe size. Just one more quirky little reason why this book has earned a place on my 'favorites' shelf.

As a Nashvillian, I would like to say: We are proud of our 'Cash heritage' and this book lays it all on the line.

Thank you, Hugh Waddell for such a wonderful gift that I'm sure even JRC's family will treasure for years and years.

5 out of 5 stars The most compelling Cash book I have ever read.......2005-03-27

How do you come up with a way to tell the Johnny Cash Story that hasn't yet been done? There are countless biographies out there (disclosure: I have consulted, resourced and been interviewed on many), and the mythic history of this great man has been told many ways. But Hugh Waddell, JRC's friend and confidant of longstanding, has produced THE definitive portrait. He did it not by another retelling of the great Redemption story of our times (although that never gets old), or by a mere chronicle of John's achievements. Instead, he spectacularly tells the story through the eyes of John's family, friends, colleagues and fans. He wisely, and accurately, realized that it was John's effect on others which made him Mt. Rushmore-worthy. His life and music spoke to us, for us and with us, and the impact he made on people great and small continues to take the breath away. Johnny Cash walked with presidents (they fawned over him) and he sat with the people (who worshipped him). Hugh Waddell captures the qualities which allowed this by pointing the camera not at John, but at those he touched. The lens is reversed, and we see The Great Cash as a father, a farmer, a friend. His importance is told through the countless small interactions, the kindnesses and generosity, the human fraility and the soaring triumphs. He gave voice to our dreams and aspirations, taught us what it was like to run the mortal race, to fall greatly and rise back up greater. In these touching stories we see the real man, but more, we see ourselves. I did not want this book to end. The real people and their real stories about a real man are gripping. Johnny Cash was a giant, obviously. In this superb book we get to see how giants get that way. If I want someone to know what Johnny Cash was like, I give them this book.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Johnny Cash.......2005-03-15

If you're a Johnny Cash fan, a country music historian, a lover of Southern literature, or someone who just likes a great read, you'll love this book. Hugh Waddell has hit upon a brilliant biographical device. Instead of an anthology of recollections by Johnny Cash's peers in the entertainment world, this book is a compilation of reminiscences from plain folks, family members, business and music friends, who knew him close-up and personal.

Their insights and their informal photographs and private handwritten correspondences add much to the expanding canon of biographical works devoted to Johnny Cash.

3 out of 5 stars A decent comic encyclopedia that gears mostly towards the golden age........2007-02-14

As with most of these comic book/fantasy "guides" or "encyclopedias", such a huge task is bound to end up with a few factual errors and typos. There are certainly a few of those here in this book. For instance, Ron Goulart mentions that Jim Lee helped launch X-Men, Vol. 2 in 2001 (a full ten years after it originally happened). Such a mistake would probably fall in the "typo" category, but still pretty silly nonetheless.

The author admits that he grew up reading comics during it's "golden age", and it shows as this book *mostly* focuses on the industry throughout the late 20s-50s, and seems to completely forget all but the truly major top-selling characters of the 60s onward. But this indeed the "Comic Book Encyclopedia" because all years are represented, up to about 2001, it's just that the golden age seems to be the primary focus. Reading many entries in this book, I often wondered if Goulart was simply inserting his own favorites from his childhood into the book, because many of these characters and titles I had never heard of, even though I am a fan of that era. He seems to showcase the most obscure of companies, creators, and books even for the 30s & 40s.

Also at times Goulart seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder and may make remarks in regards to how underrated or overrated an artist or writer was, going as far to call out certain artists by speaking of how poor their style is.

But don't get me wrong, this encyclopedia is a joy to read. There's a great use of artwork here in relations to characters, comic book covers, and a creator's work. Having been born in 1981, I still have great interest in all those comic book years before me and I really enjoy reading about and seeing the artwork of the books of the 30s and 40s and 50s. So as long as you're not expecting an overview covering the New Avengers, X-Men, JLA, and Batman universes exclusively and don't mind catching up on the golden age, this is a very good book to pick up for fans of comics in general.

I skimmed through this book, which I fortunately bought from SFBC instead of a book store or Amazon, and found at least three errors.

Basically, don't count on this book to be 100% factual.

4 out of 5 stars Superficial but beautiful.......2005-08-29

The graphics are simply outstanding and worth the price of the book alone. The text is something else, though. It's pretty superficial for the most part, and it misses some influential artists such as Gahan Wilson, Roy Krenkel and Edward Gorey (yes, I know they weren't really comic book artists, but they're so famous and their influence so profound they should have been included). For the most part I'd say this is light, enjoyable reading, certainly nothing in depth, but again, the graphics are just simply gorgeous.

3 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Light Study of Comic Books.......2005-08-21

The Comic Book Encyclopedia is a good light reference book to have. Is it an in depth comprehensive reference manual, for the professional researcher? No. But one of this book's best features is the ability to give some direction to more focused comprehensive research. Specific targeted areas and ample availability of keywords and keyword phrases, will help immensely with an Internet search.

If you understand anything about marketing at all, you know that packaging is half the battle. This book is packaged extremely well. It has great visuals on the front and back covers. Be wary though, and accept the book for its general lighthearted nature.

There is a useable informative timeline of comic book evolution, located inside the front and back covers. But there is no table of contents, which would have been extremely helpful. The index is available, but many times a table of contents is of better use to me.

If this book is purchased from Amazon, it is a lot cheaper than running down to a local bookstore. And if you would like to learn more about comic books or want a general reference resource, I would recommend this book. If more in depth comic book knowledge is wanted, this book is also a good starting point.

As a website builder of "www.comic-book-collection-made-easy.com", it has helped me with content and direction into further research. So I have not regretted my purchase. There are better reference materials and websites available though, for the more experienced comic book connoisseur.

This book is totaly worthless. Most of the writing is either illegal and punishable by real jail time or stupid pipe dreams. The author, who gets his material from submissions from "who knows who" writes of breaking into someones property and damaging their vehicle by tampering with the engine. First this is very dangerous, illegal, not funny, and you would need a key to get inside the car to open the hood in modern cars.
He writes of re-wiring an elevator to make it go to different floors when the buttons are pushed. How many people could really do this and even if they could when? Reading this is a waste of time.

Got someone you dislike, but can't confront them directly for whatever reason? Aw c'mon, we all have a mental "list" of people we "owe"... George Hayduke has made a living off telling you how to get even! You've seen him and his revenge books, "Get even", "Get even II", etc since you were young I bet.

I recently got the chance to review ALL of his books. So OK, I figured "Get Even" was great, but the rest would be rehashes of the tricks in his first book... NOT SO! He is undoubtedly one of the wicked and sneaky minded men on earth! I would NOT want to ever be on the wrong side of this man, so OF CORSE I am gonna give him rave reviews! :)

These books are very funny, packed full of info, and offer ideas to get your own creative juices flowing. He covers revenge for every subject you can think of, from Ex-spouses and lovers, to big corporation. It's all in there somewhere! Of COURSE these books are for entertainment purposes ONLY! (Let's all say it together now: "If you get caught doing some of this stuff, you WILL go to jail!") The Down Side:

As expected, his first book "Get Even" is a bit outdated in the computer areas, sometimes referring to "punch cards", but each book is more "updated" than the last. Most of his "ideas" are timeless.

A waste of time, a waste of money. This book, dated 1981 is so out-of-date as to be irrelevant. Typical chapters cover one and one-half pages; mostly of material sent in to Hayduke from contributors to his Paladin Press magazine columns. Most of that material so obviously points the "mark" in the direction of the perpurtrator (you) that retaliation is almost a certainty. I'll be reviewing the 1999 Hayduke book, but so far most of his stuff is a rehash of the magazine material and seriously lacking on high tech mayhem - which is ultimately so more deadly and anonymous.
