2 out of 5 stars Too boring even for Soviet Russia.......2007-09-26

I had to read this for a World Civilization course and found it incredibly boring. None of the characters really have any emotional depth or personality, thus it's hard to care when anything bad happens to them, which is pretty much all that does happen in this book. I realize that many people were like Sofia in that they either did not or could not understand what was happening in this time period because of government censorship and misinformation, but Sofia isn't just naive. She comes off as downright stupid, which is extremely irritating considering that the entire book is about her.

The only good thing I really have to say about Sofia Petrovna is that it was very short and written in quite plain language so I didn't have to suffer through it for long.

5 out of 5 stars Dangerous Times, Simple Writing.......2005-03-11

This book was assigned to me in a Russian literature course, and it is one of the best Russian books that I have read so far.

As already mentioned in other reviews, it was very dangerous for Lydia Chukovskaya to have written this book, and is an excellent example of subversive writing at the time. It clearly captures the feelings at the time, as well as the reactions of the people.

The sad descent of Sofia Petrovna and her son into despair and madness is well-written in this great novel, which, while very simply and plainly written, is extremely expressive and emotional, while never being a cliche.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling Account.......2004-05-16

How friends turned away when a family member was "taken away" and left those remaining alone to starve since no one could employ them. This reads like a true account of the Stalinist Purge times but is under the label of fiction. Even as fiction, the author was in peril writting it. It is a short effective story written in a compelling manner.

5 out of 5 stars Chukovskaya's vision of an unmentionable time.......1997-07-04

Madame Chukovskaya's Sofia Petrovna is one of the best examples of Soviet protest literature available to English readers. Her prose style, spare and direct, is marvelously fitting for this story of a Soviet everywoman's loss of faith. Because there is little introspection, the reader is forced to look deeply into why the events in the heroine's life are causing her to go mad. The reflection on the Soviet system which this creates is one of the best ways to study the period about which Chukovskaya wrote. What is particularly moving about this book is the voice Chukovskaya uses to tell her story. It is the most feminine of voices, that of a mother, whose compassion and faith in her son, while conflicting with her identity as a good Soviet citizen, are emotions with which any female reader can relate, or any parent. This short novel is often grouped with A. Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch. The relation between the two books is compelling. One presents the story of those who were senselessly condemned to the gulags; the other recounts the impact of this condemnation on the families and friends left behind. Although this book is not widely read by the American public, I think it one of the most moving stories of Soviet life in the Stalinist era. For this reason, I believe it will continue to be a classic of Soviet literature for many years to come

When a legendary bad boy returns to town, Kate must summon her inner temptress.

Kate Bloom’s ordered world is turned upside down when notorious bad boy and superstar athlete Jesse Chapman comes home. Seeing him again reminds Kate of all the reasons she harbored a Texas-sized crush on him back when they were kids. But she isn’t a little girl anymore . . . and she’s ready to show this hell-raising playboy just how sexy she can be.
After a reporter starts digging into his past, Jesse Chapman returns home looking for space. The last thing he needs is a distraction, but that’s just what he gets when he sees his little Katie. Suddenly the girl next door is hot and sexy–and more than even this legendary ladies’ man can handle.

Katherine Bloom told herself she could do this. She just needed to focus and concentrate on getting the job done as quickly and as efficiently as possible. She refused to think about the fact that she didn¿t have much experience. Though surely it was no different than riding a bike. Once you¿d done it, you never forgot how. And if this was what she had to do to keep her job, so be it.

Nerves tried to break through her raised-chin bravado, and suddenly keeping her incredibly great job as an award-winning newswoman didn¿t seem all that important. If she hurried, she realized, she could walk out the door and be in Mexico by lunch. She could change her name. Dye her hair. Find employment selling tacos on the street corner in downtown Ciudad Juárez. Didn¿t everyone need a career change at one time or another?

Groaning at herself, she shook the thought away. During the last week, she had put her reporter¿s skills to work. She had found magazine articles, online Web sites, and books with titles like Make It Sizzle and Spice Up Your Life.

Not one to depend on a man to think of every eventuality, she¿d had the foresight to purchase a few things she thought they might need.

      A bottle of wine.

Some painful-looking utensils. Who knew things had gotten so creative?

      Condiments.

      Honey.

      Oil.

      Plus, carrots and potatoes.

She still couldn¿t believe Julia expected her to cook on live television with a man referred to as the Naked Chef.

Kate took a deep calming breath, thought about the stress management techniques she had learned in the company-sponsored stress management course¿which she had failed¿then smoothed her apron.

Seconds more ticked by before she finally settled on a smile, taking in the pristine white-latticed window behind her, the perfect sink, the shiny oven. Even a real refrigerator. She had thought of everything when planning this kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Jesse Chapman loves Kate Bloom.......2006-08-31

Jesse Chapman, a popular and cute golfer, escapes to his hometown to get away from the glitz and glamour of the media light to concentrate on his game. His escape is anything but. He discovers he's got a child and that he still loves the girl next door, but feels he's inadequate to handle either. The author does a great job on unfolding this romance.

      4 out of 5 stars I suddenly found a new author I like!.......2006-06-25

I came across this book by accident in the library and thought the cover looked interesting. I was very excited to find it and (one of)its sequel at a local bookstore.
The story overall is enjoyable, though a little long-winded at times. However, the chemistry, or rather electricity, between the two characters, Jesse and Katherine, jumps right off the page from the first moment they meet each other. Linda Lee does a superb job of making you feel what the characters are feeling and when Katherine blushed, I blushed. It does take a while for the two characters to get together and I did find myself getting frustrated at Jesse's on-going blah, blah, blah, "I'm such a loner I can't be with you. (But I don't want you to be with anyone else either) attitude"; but, I did look forward to seeing how it all played out. Again, I'm glad I found this author and am scouring the used bookstores to find more of her books! :)

4 out of 5 stars Wow - what a great start to Sexy Series.......2006-05-06

Jesse and Kate have been friends since they were children. Jesse left town and became a pro-golfer and now after crowded a 'national hero' he returns home to escape. Kate has it all on the outside her own TV show, lots of money and great friends but on the inside her heart has been wounded by her childhood love ~ Jesse who is now back!

5 out of 5 stars funny, sexy, simply the best.......2006-01-03

for a person who prefer thriller than romance, i find this book hillarious, sexy and yeah, romantic..
i had to refrain myself from laughing out loud as people around me might think i'm crazy..
i love the fact that the women in this novel are not portrayed as desperate but as strong, inspiring women and the sisterhood in the novel is also a plus for me
i have never labeled a book as sexy but for this book( and the other two in this trilogy), it;s no doubt a hell of a sexy book..however you define sexy to a book

4 out of 5 stars Great chemistry and plenty of sizzle!.......2005-09-14

"Suddenly Sexy" is the first in a trilogy of books about the women in charge of an El Paso TV station. Katherine "Kate" Bloom is the anchor of KTEX. Known as somewhat of a stuffed shirt, she tries her best to add levity to her remote segments aptly titled "Getting Real with Kate."

When literally, the boy from next door (who has warmed her heart since childhood) turns up at the station and helps her save a cooking segment with a naked chef who is a no show, she is all thumbs when it comes. Jesse Chapman is the bad boy of golf and he is back in El Paso to shy away from the limelight while gearing up for his next PGA match after being touted as a hero for "rescuing" a fan. He appears to have lost his edge (you know, in an edgy golfer sort of way).

When he is thrust back into Kate's world, staying in the guest house of all places, the two find themselves in "too close for comfort" proximity. Will she open her heart once again to the father of all heartbreakers? Will he let his guard down enough to let the one woman who can make a difference inside?

Interlaced with funny emails that assist in setting the tone and advancing the storyline, the plot trudges along at a quick pace. The characters jump from the page, and you find yourself excited about what future installments in the series have to offer.

A few good Marines beat the fierce, fanatical aliens once before. But that was a skirmish–not a full-scale invasion.

The truth is out. No longer are the Skinks just a horrible secret haunting the Marines of Company L. Now the aliens are all-too-real invaders whose savage attacks have devastated planet Kingdom, a world of squabbling religions where the men of the 34th FIST confront a desperate situation. Cities that haven’t already been reduced to rubble are under siege, while starving refugees roam the land. And still the Skinks come, rising from stinking primordial swamps to slake their thirst for slaughter, armed with an uncanny ability to locate the enemy and with weapons so deadly that a single blast can drop a warplane or a decimate a squad.

It’s painfully evident that 34th FIST is no match for these near-invincible killers, which is why third platoon’s been ordered to whip the citizens of Kingdom into fighting shape. With their backs to the wall and time running out, there’s only one way the Marines can turn these timid, quarrelsome men into warriors: Take the battle to the enemy. It’s a brilliant strategy, sure to succeed–if it doesn’t get them killed first. . . .

The 34th is still embroiled in its battle against the invading aliens on the planet of Kingdom and like most militaries, it has as much trouble with the politicians as it does with the enemies. They are also still doing so with élan, spirit de corps and good old fashioned jarhead toughness.

The aliens are quite different than your normal science fiction fare. They are amphibians and instead of using fancy ray guns, they use acid. They are tough and utterly alien but they are also up against the finest military tradition on earth.

The book feels the loss of Gunnery Sgt. Bass, apparently killed in the last volume, but there is reason for hope. A character who is probably him turns up for a few pages at the very end. Now I just have to wait for the next book to come in.

                It's a good story.

5 out of 5 stars Eat plasma, Lizard-Boy!.......2003-02-13

It's the 25th Century, Humanity has settled dozens of worlds. The most dangerous species in explored space is other humans. The Confederation Marines are the descendents of the US and Royal Marines of our time. They keep order among the worlds humans have colonized. Life is good. The Religious Wars of the 21st Century resulted in Kingdom. Essentially, it is a reservation, where all the Religious Fundamentalists of all Religions have been "persuaded" to move.
It's a pesthole of constant religious war, but at least all the nutcases are in one asylum. The Confederation watches to make sure they can't escape from the planet.
And then come the Skinks - a bunch of xenocidal humaniform lizards who think that killing humans is great fun - and the survivors make good slaves.
The Marines show up, and the Skink Commander decides that he not only wants to defeat the Marines, he wants to humiliate and intimidate them. Trouble is, somebody forgot to tell him something - you can defeat Marines. It's difficult, but possible.
You can humiliate Marines. Difficult but possible.
But INTIMIDATE them? - that is a leetle bit closer to impossible...
This is a book of sweeping realistic vistas, from the Infantry "Line Animal" Grunt slogging in the mud, to Space Battle between 10 KM Starcruisers, to the internecine political wrangling on Capitol Hill.
The characters are three dimensional and highly believable.
Enjoy...and go back and get the rest of the series. It's worth it.

Wow! I've read all the books so far in this series, and this one is the best one yet. I can't wait for the next books. That was a wonderful twist at the end (which I'm not going to say anything more about or it will be ruined)! Totally unexpected. The whole book was well written and the different parts were very well integrated.

This is another masterpiece from David Sherman and Dan Cragg.

                  Book Description

James McCudden was an outstanding British fighter ace of World War I, whose daring exploits earned him a tremendous reputation and, ultimately, an untimely end. Here, in this unique and gripping first-hand account, he brings to life some of aviation history? most dramatic episodes in a memoir completed at the age of twenty-three, just days before his tragic death. During his time in France with the Royal Flying Corps from 1914 to 1918, McCudden rose from mechanic to pilot and flight commander. Following his first kill in September 1916, McCudden shot down a total of fifty-seven enemy planes, including a remarkable three in a single minute in January 1918. A dashing patrol leader, he combined courage, loyalty and judgement, studying the habits and psychology of enemy pilots and stalking them with patience and outstanding success. Written with modesty and frankness, yet acutely perceptive, Flying Fury is both a valuable insight into the world of early aviation and a powerful account of courage and survival above the mud and trenches of Flanders. Fighter ace James McCudden died in July 1918, after engine failure caused his plane to crash just four months before the end of World War I. His success as one of Britain's deadliest pilots earned him the Victoria Cross.

5 out of 5 stars Excellently written, First World War fighter pilot personal account, .......2006-05-19

Major McCudden died in an accident prior to the original publication of this book in 1918. Three days prior to his death, he dropped to the first manuscript off to the editor. Out of respect for McCudden, the editor refused to make the customary editorial changes and rewrites. The books stand in the raw, as provided by the author, which makes it all the more incredible that the book is so well written and captivating.

The book is written like a personal account or diary, shortly after the events. The story is vivid, and full of personal anecdotes and funny or amazing stories that keep the readers interest up. The editor did explain in the forward the names and abbreviations used by the author (for wartime security) to describe places and people.

McCudden transferred into the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) as a mechanic prior World War I. During the war, he was given the opportunity to become a pilot, and went on to be one of the leading British aces during the last two years of the war.
His account of his flight training (solo after only 2 hours! - flight instructor after only 8 hours solo!!) is nothing short of scary for pilots who trained under the current regimented and regulated schools.

The author makes several comments about his respect for his adversaries ("the Hun"), their bravery and flying ability. He even frequently remarks he expects some criticism from readers for speaking so highly of the Germans, but he explains his admiration for their skill is separate from his political opinion.

There is no question of his patriotism, his willingness to fight for "King and country," or his belief of the justness of the `cause.' This is especially clear when he describes his feelings on learning of his brother's death in combat. This is in stark contrast to Cecil Lewis' account, and they served in the same squadron, at the same time.

The book is an excellent read for pilots, aviation buffs, and those interested in World War I. First hand accounts always give the best portrayal of life and feel `real' - this one is no exception.

As with Sagittarius Rising, the reader will definitely want a World War I aircraft reference (Jane's Fighting Aircraft of World War I is good), but don't be surprised - the author frequently describes the machines differently, with a common (but unofficial name), or just by the manufacturer (e.g. a Pfalz scout).

One update, I have since acquired a hardcover edition from the late 1960's under the series name "Air Combat Classics" that includes many excellent pictures. If you can find that edition, try to get it.

5 out of 5 stars A Fine Look at WWI in the Air.......2004-09-26

Mud, gas, soldiers getting machine gunned by the tens of thousands, there was little about the ground war in World War One to be excited about. But in the sky new technology and new heroes were being born. James McCudden was one of these heroes. Many books were written during the war and just after the war by WWI aces as a type of propaganda. McCudden's book certainly bears some of these marks but there is more here. Look beyond the sometimes overstated "up and at 'em" spirit that occasionally comes out and this is a fine look at the war in the air during World War One. Several things stand out.

McCudden was in the war from the beginning. This means we are able to see the air war from the start. The air is filled with Bleriots, Farmans and even a Taube or two. We get insight into those early days. Airplanes were only good for reconnaissance right? Wrong. Almost immediately bombs are being fitted to Bleriots and observers begin toting rifles aloft to blast away at offending enemy airplanes. In McCudden's war there doesn't seem to ever be a time when enemy pilots wave to each other as they pass. From day one they are shooting.

We also gain a look at this new type of warfare. We feel McCudden's frustration as he learns just how hard it is to shoot down an airplane. We learn that those machine guns jammed with a maddening frequency, almost every flight it sometimes seems. We also learn the anguish felt when even an enemy burns. It is not until McCudden shoots one down in flames that he feels a pang of conscience over his role in the war. There is admiration for a noble foe and yet it is not shared by all. Arthur Rhys-David's attempted toast to VonRichtofen is a telling incident. Perhaps the greatest trajedy of the McCudden story doesn't actually appear in the book, at least not by McCudden's hand. Just days after completing the book James McCudden was dead, the victim not of a German aeroplane's guns but a faulty engine and the earth that was just a bit too close.

All of this make the propaganda aspect of the book fairly easy to shrug off. Originally called simply "Five Years in the Royal Flying Corps" editors saw fit to call the book "Flying Fury" when it was reprinted in the 1930s. I wish they'd left it alone. McCudden's title is better for this is truly what this book is. I recommend Flying Fury as a good look at the world's first air war.

5 out of 5 stars KUDOS TO McCUDDEN!!!.......2003-02-04

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Considering his humble origins in an England heavily rooted in class, and his rise from a bugler in the Royal Engineers to a mechanic in the Royal Flying Corps to one of the finest fighter pilots of the First World War, James McCudden shows that anyone can aspire for greatness, provided one is willing to work and sacrifice.

For anyone with a curiosity about what air warfare in the First World War was really like, READ THIS BOOK. I highly recommend it.

                  5 out of 5 stars A True Classic!.......2003-01-06

This biographical account of the one of Britain's leading aces from World War I is one of the best flying tales ever written of any era. At the age of fifteen, McCudden started out as a bugler in the Royal Engineers before becoming a mechanic in the Pre-WWI Flying Corps when aeroplane technology was still very immature. He witnessed, indeed participated, in the trials and tribulations of the nascent Flying Corps and, as war arrived, saw the fragile craft used in experiments with armed combat against troops on the ground and against enmey flying machines. His interest in flying led to passenger rides in a variety of aircraft and eventually to his performing aerial observer and gunner roles in combat where he was decorated. That was just another step in his aeronautical adventure as he was subsequently selected to train as a pilot and thrown into combat in the same sector as some of the leading German aces such as Voss and Richtofen where he not only survived, but eventually become a leading ace himself. His description of his five years in the Royal Flying Corps was written while the war was still ongoing and literally days before his posting as a squadron commander and tragic death in a flying accident en route to his new squadron. His writing style is fresh and immediate capturing the day today life and passions of WWI aviators. His impressions of his foe and the relative performance of the various flying machines are unique and better than any other author from that conflict. The publishers deserve credit for recognizing the value of this slice of history and making sure it remains available to the public. The rating system only allows 5 stars...this book deserves special status beyond that. Indeed, it has such on my shelve.

5 out of 5 stars Brave simple man who loved his King and country.......1998-07-03

James McCudden's book is one of the finest written about aviation of the first world war. It is basically written by a man who was a hero who was very modest, It takes the form of a diary and gives more or less a day to day event of what it was really like to fly planes made of canvas against an enemy who McCudden had great respect for. For anyone who has a passion for first world war history this is a book not to be missed,(maybe i'm biast) Please remember when reading this book that the man had very little schooling and wrote the book in a matter of weeks and the last entry is only a few days before he was killed. A GREAT BOOK.

                      Book Description

The age of maritime expansion and the Anglo-Spanish War have been analyzed by generations of historians, but nearly all studies have emphasized events and participants "at the top." This book examines the lives and experiences of the men of the Elizabethan maritime community during a particularly volatile period of maritime history. The seafaring community had to contend with simultaneous pressures from many different directions. Shipowners and merchants, motivated by profit, hired seamen to sail voyages of ever-increasing distances, which taxed the health and capabilities of 16th-century crews and vessels. International tensions in the last two decades of Elizabeth's reign magnified the risks to all seamen, whether in civilian employment or on warships. The advent of open warfare with Spain in 1585 resulted in a privateering war against the Spanish Empire, seen by some seamen as one of the few boons of the conflict. The other major development was the introduction of impressment, a deeply resented aspect of any naval war and one that brought great hardship to seamen and their families. The relationship between the Crown and its seafarers was a "pull-haul" between a state beset by financial problems of fighting a protracted war on several fronts and employees forced to work in dangerous conditions for substandard wages. The stresses of the war years tell us much about the dynamic of the maritime community, their expectations, and their coping strategies.

I've read many books lately involving Eastern spirituality. This is one of the better titles, not so much because of the "miracles" described in the book, but because of the wisdom of Swami Rama. Some say there is no substitute for experience, and while that is true, knowledge is its complement, and here you will learn from someone who has something to teach. You should buy this book.

If you have read Paramahamsa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi, and did like it, you will definitely like this book as well. It is very similar, as it is about the yogis who achieved some super-human powers (siddhis) and also peace of mind.
                            A good inspirational life story.

I've read this book twice, about a year apart. Each time I benefit. Swami Rama writes about his spiritual development, gained from not only his master, but from other adepts he visits. What he learns from each, he summarizes to the reader. What I gained from this book is ANYTHING is possible: returning from death, healing, precognition, teletransporting, you name it, it's here. Although God is given credit for everything, it's the mind that is God-realized that is necessary. I am reminded of the Autobiography of a Yogi, but I related to this book more easily. Maybe I have advanced a bit ...

Most people today won't be able to appreciate the simple beauty of this memoir. However, its message is written in a style that anyone can follow, and even if you don't believe what is written, you will certainly still love the stories in the book, which all illustrate different morals to be followed by even those who are not Hindi renunciates.

Firstly, I wish to state that this book deserves a 5-star rating for the contents in it. However, the quality of the paperback edition leaves much to be desired. As I was reading this book, the pages got torn easily. I would strongly advise the would be buyer to purchase the hardcover edition of this wonderful book.

Anyway, Swami Rama's memoir on the Himalayan sages might prove to be hard to believe but the description on the miracles of these masters are quite "common" among yogis and saints of the past and the present. In another book, the "autobiography of a yogi" by Paramahansa Yogananda (which I strongly recommend) the descriptions of the miracles performed by saints is similar to those mentioned in this book. A timeless classic!

5 out of 5 stars Time to WAKE UP!.......2007-07-21

This story touches my heart, my funnybone, and feeds my soul. His accounts are both entertaining and spritually informative. By just reading this book, I feel like I have studied directly with Swami Rama, and am connected with his teachings. I would like to thank the author for sharing these experiences in such a heart-felt and honest way.

I highly recommend this book for everyone, but in particular it would be beneficial for people who are dissatisfied with religion, but aren't necessarily drawn to new-age thought, people who want to deepen their spiritual practice, people who are ready to awaken to a new reality, or folks who are just looking for some answers or meaning in life. Be well.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazingly Great Book.......2004-10-08

Reading about Dr. O'Brien's experiences with Swami Rama (one of the most influential yoga masters of the 20th century) is spiritually galvanizing. This is one of the best spiritual autobiographies ever! Very interesting, very inspiring, very highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Some wonderful tales of the miracles of Swami Rama.......1998-06-25

Justin Obrien, having been directed by his master, Swami Rama, almost a quarter of a century ago to someday write a book about their times together, finally completes his task.

If you know who Swami Rama is, you will surely enjoy this collection of "Swamiji" stories as told by his devout disciple, Justin OBrien. And if you don't know him, this book will introduce you to a guru extraordinair.

Swami Rama came from India to America with a mission to bridge the gap between East and West, and in the process accomplished some incredible feats. In this book, you will read of the miracles of a Saint, and the growth of his disciple, Justin, as told in a delightfully entertaining fashion.

                            Don't pass this one up.
